The Process of Obtaining a Botswana Visa from Nigeria

If you are a Nigerian citizen planning to travel to Botswana for business or tourism, you will need to obtain a visa prior to your departure. The process of getting a Botswana visa from Nigeria involves several steps, including determining the type of visa you need, gathering all the required documents, completing the online application form, paying the processing fee, scheduling an appointment for biometric data collection, attending the appointment, tracking the status of your application, receiving your visa, and verifying its accuracy. In this article, we will guide you through each step of the process to help you obtain a Botswana visa smoothly and efficiently.

Determine the Type of Visa You Need to Apply For

Before you start the application process, you need to determine the type of visa you need to apply for. Botswana offers several types of visas, including tourist visas, business visas, student visas, transit visas, and other types of visas. The requirements and application procedures may vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a tourist visa, you will need to provide a detailed itinerary of your trip, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds, and a return ticket. If you are applying for a business visa, you will need to provide a letter of invitation from a Botswana-based company or organization, as well as other supporting documents.

Gather All the Required Documents for the Application

Once you have determined the type of visa you need to apply for, you need to gather all the required documents for the application. These documents may include your passport, passport-sized photographs, proof of travel arrangements, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, travel insurance, and other documents depending on the type of visa you are applying for. It is important to ensure that all the documents are complete and accurate before submitting your application.

Complete the Botswana Visa Application Form Online

The next step is to complete the Botswana visa application form online. You can access the application form on the Botswana government’s e-visa portal. You will need to provide personal information, travel details, and passport information, as well as upload the required documents. Make sure to double-check all the information before submitting your application.

Pay the Botswana Visa Processing Fee

After completing the application form, you will need to pay the Botswana visa processing fee. The fee can be paid online using a debit or credit card. The fee may vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for and the processing time.

Schedule an Appointment for Biometric Data Collection

Once you have paid the processing fee, you will need to schedule an appointment for biometric data collection. This involves providing your fingerprints and a photograph at the Botswana High Commission in Abuja or Lagos. You will need to bring your passport and a copy of your application form to the appointment.

Attend the Biometric Data Collection Appointment

On the day of your appointment, make sure to arrive on time and bring all the required documents. The biometric data collection process is quick and straightforward. After the appointment, you will be given a receipt that you will need to keep for tracking the status of your application.

Track the Status of Your Botswana Visa Application

You can track the status of your Botswana visa application online using the reference number on your receipt. The processing time may vary depending on the type of visa you are applying for and the volume of applications. You will receive an email notification once your application has been processed.

Receive Your Botswana Visa and Verify Its Accuracy

If your application is approved, you will receive your Botswana visa by email. Make sure to check the accuracy of the visa information, including the validity dates and the number of entries. If you notice any errors, contact the Botswana High Commission immediately for correction.

Prepare for Your Trip to Botswana

After receiving your Botswana visa, you can start preparing for your trip. Make sure to book your travel arrangements, accommodation, and travel insurance. Also, familiarize yourself with the local customs and laws of Botswana to avoid any misunderstandings during your stay.

Botswana is one of Africa’s most stunning safari destinations, famed for its high-end, low-impact tourism model, vast fence-free national parks and spectacular wildlife. And there's good news for travelers: many visitors can get a visa on arrival and start exploring.

The visa requirements for entering Botswana depend on your nationality. Visiting for tourism is straightforward for most travelers, but if your home country is not on the list for visa-exempt travel, you can apply for a visa online.

Here’s our guide to Botswana’s entry requirements, with all you need to know about visa types, costs and details on how to apply.

Who can travel to Botswana visa-free?

Citizens of 100 countries can enter Botswana for tourism purposes without a visa. The list of visa-exempt countries includes the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and most European countries, as well as South Africa and Namibia. If you're still unsure, you can check whether you need a visa on the Botswana evisa website .

You'll get a stamp in your passport at the airport granting permission for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry into Botswana, with at least three unused pages. Dual nationals using two different passports can only enter the country on the same passport they used to exit the previous country.

You must also be prepared to show a round-trip or onward ticket and evidence of sufficient funds to support your stay.

Which countries need a visa for Botswana?

Nationals of around 140 countries need a visa to enter Botswana for tourism, including many citizens of countries in Central and South America, Asia and Africa. While most Commonwealth countries are exempt, citizens from Ghana, Nigeria, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka do need a visa. The up-to-date list of countries requiring a visa can be found on the Botswana evisa website .

You can apply for a Botswana tourist visa online by completing the application form and uploading the necessary documents, including a certified passport, a round-trip ticket, confirmation of accommodations and a recent photo. Allow two to three weeks for approval.

You can choose between a single-entry visa for up to 30 days for 300 Botswana pula (BWP) or a multiple-entry visa for up to 90 days for 500 BWP.

Can I extend my visa to Botswana?

It’s possible to extend your stay with a valid reason. Visitors wishing to do this will need to apply at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in the capital city of  Gaborone  or in Maun before the initial period of stay expires. There’s a 500 BWP charge for extensions.

How do I get a visa for volunteering or working in Botswana?

If you want to undertake volunteer work in Botswana, the organization you’ll be working for or the organization you book through can help arrange your visa.

If you’re planning to work in Botswana, your employer will need to organize an employment visa, or you can apply via the evisa website. The visa is normally valid for six months, and it’s possible to extend it while you are there.

What to know if you’re traveling with children

In addition to a valid passport and visa (if applicable), children under 18 years old traveling into Botswana must provide a certified copy of their full, unabridged birth certificate.

If a child is traveling with one parent or with another adult, the parent or parents who aren’t present need to provide a certified letter giving consent for the child to travel. For more information, check with your nearest Botswana embassy.

Do I need an International Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever?

Under International Health Regulations, a certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers aged one year and above arriving from or having transited through countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Check the World Health Organization for the list of affected countries.

Southern African countries plan to expand special tourist visa

By Nyasha Chingono

LIVINGSTONE, Zambia (Reuters) - Five Southern African countries on Friday committed to expanding the use of a special common visa to allow easier movement of tourists as the region seeks to boost arrivals.

Officials from Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, countries that make up the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area, pledged in principle to broaden use of the special visa, called a univisa, which allows entry into multiple countries.

The univisa is currently used in Zambia and Zimbabwe and covers day trips to Botswana through Kazungula.

Regional leaders attending a KAZA heads of state summit in Livingstone, Zambia, said they want the special visa extended to other states in the conservation area as well as the southern African economic bloc.

"We must simply say that this will happen," Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said in his address. "I am grateful that my colleagues have reached consensus on the univisa."

Botswana Vice President Slumber Tsogwane said his country would fully adopt the univisa.

KAZA member states also resolved to urge the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to lift a ban on the trade of elephants and ivory.

The 184-member inter-governmental CITES regulates wildlife trade to protect certain species from over-exploitation. It banned trade in African elephant ivory in 1989 after the animal's population had declined sharply in the previous decade.

KAZA states say they hold $1 billion worth of ivory stockpiles, which they want to trade to fund conservation programmes.
