With a temperate continental climate, Seoul is known for its biting winters and blistering summers.

In between are the long-awaited but all-too-fleeting pockets of perfectly enjoyable weather, perhaps the best moments to visit. Even so, every season in South Korea ’s capital offers something worth traveling for  – with excitement in the calendar all year long – which might make for a difficult decision when it comes to planning your trip.

Customarily, summer brings the most international visitors to Seoul, further congesting an already packed city. Yet in recent years, spring and fall – with fetching foliage and ideal weather – have caught on as in-demand times to visit, too.

As you make your own plans, here’s our guide to the best times to visit Seoul.

March to May and September to November are the best times for outdoor attractions

Unquestionably the most agreeable seasons in Seoul, spring and fall are also the best times to soak up the city’s great outdoors, from the natural wonders of its national and city parks to the back-alley treasures of its traditional villages, temples, markets and street-food stalls . A prized spot, the Han River is where visitors can paddle around on swan boats or have a chimaek picnic of fried chicken and beer ( chimaek is a slang portmanteau that combines “chicken” with the Korean word for beer, maekju ).

Every March, the Seoul Marathon  welcomes some 35,000 runners, from expert to amateur. Unlike some other races, anyone who signs up ahead of time is qualified to participate. April arguably presents Seoul’s loveliest face, when spring bursts forth in a palette of pinks and whites and the cherry blossom trees bloom in cotton-candy swirls. Two favorite viewing spots are Yeouido Park and Namsan Park , where spectators stroll down petal-lined paths and picnic beneath flowering canopies.

Fall heralds the arrival of favorite annual traditions. South Korea’s fall harvest holiday, Chuseok, generally takes place in September: get into the harvest spirit by observing the ceremonial ritual of Sajik Daeje, a 50-minute procession that winds its way through the city near Gyeongbokgung station, paying homage to the ancient gods of earth and grain.

The crisp, dry weather continues through November and the temperature drops considerably, making this month a less expensive time to visit than September and October. The most notable happening this month might be the Seoul Lantern Festival, which sets Cheong-gye-cheon ablaze with paper lanterns and LED sculptures.

June to August are best for indoor activities

While June can be pleasant, July and August bring unbearable heat and humidity, along with heavy rains that can last all day. Luckily, Seoul has plenty of things to do for keeping dry and cool inside. Go museum or gallery hopping , experience South Korea’s quirky cafe culture or get lost in Asia’s largest underground shopping mall,  COEX , where after you’re through browsing you can enjoy an aquarium, library, movie theater and casino.

Save money and avoid the crowds from December to February

Despite its cold climate, with dry winds that wreak havoc on the skin and throat, Seoul is wondrous in the winter. The diminished crowds make the city feel smaller and more intimate, drawing into stark relief the sights, sounds and scents of everyday life. Think snow-dusted palaces, shopkeepers sweeping the flakes from their front stoops and roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes perfuming the air. You can also stretch your budget further, as the cold winter months are the most affordable time to visit.

If you enjoy winter sports, venture out for a day of skiing, snowboarding or ice fishing. Seollal, the Korean New Year based on the lunar calendar, typically falls between late January and mid-February. In the lead-up to the holiday, be on the lookout for special celebrations and traditional performances at folk villages and palaces.

Best Times To Visit Seoul

The best times to visit Seoul are from March to May and from September to November, when the weather is mild (average daily high temperatures stay below the mid-70s) and travel expenses are low. If you're a powder hound, you'll want to visit between December and February, when average daytime temperatures stay around the freezing mark and snow can be frequent. It's best to avoid the summer months, also known as monsoon season. During these months, Seoul is uncomfortably humid and full of tourists. What's more, hotel room costs are at fever pitch.

Best (and Worst) Times to Visit South Korea in 2024/2025

South Korea experiences four distinct seasons. Generally, the best times to visit South Korea are in spring (March to May) for the cherry blossoms and autumn (September to November) for the fall foliage . Both periods have mild temperatures with an average range of around 10–16°C (50–61°F), with more clear days than summer/winter.

The best time for you to visit South Korea could be different however, depending on what you want to see and your travel preferences. Read our article to find out the best times to visit South Korea based on different factors.

  • 1.South Korea Weather and Climate
  • 2. The Worst Times to Visit South Korea
  • 3. Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds
  • 4. The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea
  • 5. South Korea Travel Guide by Month

South Korea Weather and Climate

South Korea has four distinct seasons:

Spring (March to May): Being one of the best times to visit South Korea, the average temperature ranges from 8–16°C (46–61°F) , providing pleasant weather to enjoy the cherry blossoms and outdoor activities.

Summer (June to August): The sweltering conditions may make it uncomfortable for you to explore sightseeing spots during summer in South Korea. The average daily high during this season is 30°C (86°F) and there is frequent rainfall due to the rainy season. June is a better time to travel compared to July and August as it's cooler and has fewer crowds, with an average daily temperature range of 18–27°C (64–81°F).

Autumn (September to November): This is another one of the best times to visit South Korea. Cooler temperatures and decreased rainfall are the main features of this season. The average night-day temperature range is from 10 to 18°C (50–64°F). Many locals choose to go hiking during fall.

Winter (December to February): It is the coldest and driest time of the year, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 5°C (37–41°F) on a typical day. We don't usually advise visiting South Korea during this period because it is too cold for comfort. However, if you are going for skiing or snowboarding activities, it's a different story. A Japanese skiing/ winter experience is even better though.

The Worst Times to Visit South Korea

The summer months (July to August) in South Korea are the worst time to visit. High temperatures usually reach up 35°C (95°F) on the hottest days, and two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, making heavy rainfall common. Therefore, you're recommended to avoid this period if you have a flexible schedule.

The second worst time to visit South Korea is in winter , from December to February. January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures in Seoul sometimes dropping below -10°C (14°F) and occasionally falling below -15°C (5°F).

Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds

Late April to May has mild weather in South Korea , with average daily temperatures ranging from 13 to 23°C (55–73°F), and there are more sunny days before the rainy season arrives. The crowds of people viewing the cherry blossoms have disappeared and the summer vacation has not yet started, making it a perfect time to do outdoor activities and go sightseeing.

June is the start of summer and the rainy season in South Korea. The night-day temperature range is about 18–27°C (64–81°F) and rainfall typically consists of steady drizzles, but it doesn't rain every day.

September marks the tail end of the summer crowds and the rainy season. The weather tends to be drier and cooler, with an average daily temperature range of 17–26°C (63–79°F). More crowds arrive in October and November for the colorful autumn scenery. South Korea usually has a 3-day holiday in September for the important Chuseok (Mid-Autumn) festival and some stores may close or open late. Chuseok would not affect your trip and could be a chance to see more of Korea's culture.

The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea

Winter (December to February) is the cheapest time to visit South Korea, except during Christmas and New Year (usually from December 23rd to January 5th). Not only could you benefit from lower hotel prices and better deals on international flights, but also you would see fewer crowds. However, be prepared for the chilly weather!

South Korea Travel Guide by Month

January and february: cold and dry.

  • Average temperature: -4–5°C (25–41°F)
  • Average rainfall: 23 mm (1 in)

January and February in South Korea have the coldest and driest weather of the year, with temperatures dropping as low as -10°C (14°F). It's quite cold and it may not be an ideal time for you to visit the country.

Festivals and events: Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in South Korea. During this time, you could immerse yourself in Korean culture at a temple fair to experience traditional Korean performances, sample local cuisines, and pray for the coming year.

March to April: Best Time for Cherry Blossoms

  • Average temperature: 5–14°C (41–57°F)
  • Average rainfall: 56 mm (2 in)

The cherry blossom season, from March to April, is one of the best times to visit South Korea due to the pleasant weather and increased number of sunny days. The cherry blossoms are usually in full bloom from late March to early April.

Festivals and events: Cherry blossom festivals are held in many cities in South Korea to view the charming pink blossoms, and it's the most popular event in spring.

May: Warm with Clearer Days

  • Average temperature: 13–23°C (55–73°F)
  • Average rainfall: 106 mm (4 in)

May offers an excellent opportunity for travel in South Korea due to its pleasant climate and sunny days. It's a perfect time to travel, particularly if you have a flexible schedule , as the rainy season and summer vacation crowds have yet to arrive.

June: Coolest Summer Month

  • Average temperature: 18–27°C (64–81°F)
  • Average rainfall: 133 mm (5 in)

June marks the beginning of summer in South Korea and is considered to be the coolest month to travel during the summer season. However, it is also the start of the rainy season, which typically means a steady drizzle rather than downpours.

June is a better month for families with school-age children (if you can get time off school) compared to July and August because you could enjoy fewer crowds and lower costs.

Festivals and events: South Korea celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival. As well as seeing dragon boat races, you could also eat aizi cake (wormwood rice dumplings) and appreciate captivating traditional performances.

July to August: Hot and Humid

  • Average temperature: 22–31°C (72–88°F)
  • Average rainfall: 380 mm (15 in)

July and August are the hottest months of the year, and the rainfall is very high and sometimes stormy. However, it does not rain every day. High temperatures could exceed 35°C (95°F), creating an uncomfortable feeling of heat and humidity while doing outdoor sightseeing on some days. There are also the summer vacation crowds. If you are flexible with when you can go, it is suggested that you avoid this period.

September: End of the Rainy Season with Fewer Crowds

  • Average temperature: 17–26°C (63–79°F)
  • Average rainfall: 169 mm (7 in)

The weather becomes cooler and drier in September. You could expect fewer crowds and cheaper costs when traveling to South Korea during this month.

Festivals and events: The Chuseok festival is another important festival in South Korea where you could appreciate the full moon and enjoy traditional performances, immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere.

October to November: Best Time for Autumn Foliage

  • Average temperature: 7–16°C (45–61°F)
  • Average rainfall: 52 mm (2 in)

October to November is one of the peak times to travel to South Korea due to the comfortable weather and sunny days. The whole country explodes with colors and you could enjoy the stunning red and yellow fall foliage scenery.

December: Celebrating Christmas

  • Average temperature: -3–4°C (27–39°F)
  • Average rainfall: 22 mm (1 in)

December is cold and dry in South Korea. Although it's not quite as cold as January, it's too cold for travel without being encumbered by lots of warm clothing. If you want to celebrate Christmas with your family in South Korea, remember to book your Christmas feast in advance.

The best time to visit Seoul, South Korea

By Julian Manning

The best time to visit Seoul South Korea

After a city with soul? Seoul’s got it in spades, from its frizzling BBQ dens to its shop-till-you-drop street markets and luxury malls, it’s a place where even the convenience stores delight. Sprawling skyscrapers shade cherry blossom-filled parks, perfect for picnics. Mammoth museums live next to gorgeous little galleries showcasing contemporary Korean creatives. It’s a city where traditional teahouses, handmade hanji paper vendors, and relaxing steam bathhouses live down the road from rollicking K-Pop clubs and open-air, late-night food courts. All it asks of you is, can you keep up?

What is the best time to visit Seoul, South Korea?

Like many East Asian destinations, the best time to visit Seoul is during the spring months of March to May and the autumn months of September to November . The cool climes make both seasons perfect for fresh-air fun, whether you’re keen on food tours —think tteokbokki, spicy, simmered rice cakes and tableside pork belly BBQ (samgyeopsal-gui)—or the city’s immense shopping scene, with outdoor clothing market options like Namdaemun Market, vintage finds at Dongmyo Flea Market, and the Hongdae Art Market for local crafts.

If you really want to stretch your legs , the stunning Bukhansan National Park offers myriad hiking trails for all levels, plus some of the trails lead to Seoul’s Old City walls. And for lighter on-foot exploration, amble about traditional neighbourhoods like Bukchon Hanok Village or follow the Yeon Deung Hoe or Lotus Lantern Festival parades in May.

The winter tourist season gets plenty chilly, but is loaded with fun activities, from strawberry picking ( December marks the beginning of the strawberry season) , ice skating at the city’s many rinks, indulging in a traditional steam bath or jjimjilbang, and visiting Seoul’s nearby ski slopes like Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort. The summer months are ideal for swimming in nearby mountain streams and beaches when the monsoon season or jangma takes a break, plus there’s a surge in late-night party-goers during the summer days as locals want to extend their time in the cool evenings. Both summer and winter are also perfect for gallery-hopping (Kukje Gallery and BB&M underscore contemporary Korean artists) and museum-going (The National Museum of Korea and The National Folk Museum of Korea showcase South Korea’s immense history), especially if the weather is unpredictable.

Temperatures in Seoul throughout the year

March to May: 0°C-23°C June to August: 23°C-39°C September to November: 1°C-25°C December to February: -5°C-4°C

What is the best time to visit Seoul, South Korea, for cherry blossoms?

There is also plenty for nature lovers within the bustling city itself. The best time to visit Seoul for cherry blossoms is in April. April brings in cherry blossom season , with destinations like Yeongdeungpo home to some 2,000 cherry blossom trees along the Han River, the pink-petal-encircled Seokchon Lake (both have their respective blossom festivals), and the well-manicured grounds of the 14th-century Gyeongbokgung Palace. Alternatively, UNESCO World Heritage Site Changdeokgung Palace, Namsan Park, and Seoul Forest feature all the fiery foliage of autumn, the perfect season to sip tea in the teahouses of Insadong or pursue traditional pottery classes.

Can I speak English in Seoul?

While many Seoulites don’t speak English, the locals are largely accommodating to polite tourists. Learning a few rudimentary phrases in Korean is always a good idea as a sign of respect, but if travellers are short on time they can get by without them. That being said, Seoul is home to several expat neighbourhoods , such as Itaewon and Hannam, where English is widely spoken at bars and restaurants.

Best time to visit Seoul South Korea

Why is Seoul so famous?

Seoul is the birthplace of K-Pop, an international fashion and shopping destination, and has a diverse nightlight culture. Oh, and the culinary scene is simply world class—need we say more?

What is the cheapest time to visit Seoul?

Seoul is expensive, but with a little planning travellers can have loads of fun on a budget. Luckily, the pleasant spring and autumn seasons in Seoul are also the low tourism seasons, so hotel rates take a dip just as the temperatures hit a sweet spot. Not to mention that the city is home to loads of hostels and a decent amount of traditional guesthouses, so travellers have many options to choose from. There are plenty of top-notch restaurants and shopping malls that cost a pretty penny, but they are balanced out by street markets brimming with local food and more affordable home-grown brands. Plus, most large museums only charge tickets for special exhibits and not the main galleries, and travel passes like Go City help make exploring the city more affordable. If you need an added incentive, the city’s countless cosmetics stores are typically very generous with their samples.

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul?

Korea Palace in Seoul

Korea is a country of four VERY different seasons. With weather varying from -20 – 40 degrees throughout the year, it is important to plan your visit ahead.

One of the most common questions that I receive about Korea is ‘when is the best time to visit Korea?’. This post is here to help with deciding when you should visit Korea. While the information in this post is relevant to all of South Korea, it is specifically targeted at Seoul.

This post will mainly cover the best seasons to visit Seoul, but it won’t go in-depth into the best activities in every season. I have already covered every season individually in separate posts which can be found below:

  • Spring in Korea
  • Summer in Korea
  • Autumn in Korea
  • Winter in Korea

If you already have a season/month in mind, make sure to check out those posts for a far deeper look. With that being said, let’s get straight into it.

Looking to learn some essential Korean travel phrases before visiting Korea?

Best Times To Visit Seoul

Naksan Park

Naksan Park in spring.

The best season to visit Seoul really depends on what you want to see while you are here. Spring has cherry blossoms , and fall has stunning foliage. However, while these are generally the seasons that I recommend visiting in, some people do prefer summer and winter.

Therefore, while I will discuss some of the best times to visit Seoul below, it is worth mentioning that these aren’t the only good times to visit! No matter when you visit you can have a great time. It’s all down to preference.

With that being said, for the vast majority of people visiting in May or June will be more comfortable than July or August. The weather can reach 40 degrees on the most extreme days and rain is plentiful. With that in mind, I picked some of the months that I would recommend to anyone visiting.

Spring – Cherry Blossoms and Beauty

Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Witnessing the spectacular cherry blossoms can be rather difficult due to the short period that they are in full bloom. Usually, they will be spectacular for about 5 days after the first bloom.

Unfortunately, this period is also very hard to predict. Usually, cherry blossom season begins at around March 20th and finishes in mid-April. The cherry blossom season begins in the south and gradually works up towards Seoul.

The official cherry blossom schedule is usually only released a few weeks prior. This is due to the unpredictability of the weather. You can get an idea about what the schedule usually looks like from the 2019 Cherry Blossom Forecast .

Cherry Blossom Map 2019

The cherry blossom season can last for about a week. However, if the weather is bad, it can be significantly shorter. Both rain and wind will damage the blossoms and sometimes the best viewing period will only last a few days.

Fall – Stunning Foliage and Nice Weather

Fall Colours South Korea

Fall foliage at World Cup Stadium .

If you are looking for the mildest weather and the most beautiful nature, then fall is the best time to visit South Korea.

The Korea fall foliage season begins at the end of September and continues through the whole month of October. Generally, Seoul foliage is at its peak in the second half of October.

Not only is this season spectacular due to the stunning colours and nature, but it is also a great time to do outdoor activities. The weather isn’t too hot or too cold, and this makes it ideal for exploring Korea.

Make the most of the fall foliage with these tours:  Korea Mountains Fall Foliage One Day Tour | Jeju Island Fall Tour | Seoul & Vicinities Fall Tour

Summer & Winter – Best Months

Seoul Forest Lake

Summer in Korea is also beautiful! Especially at Seoul Forest .

While spring and fall tend to be most people’s preferred time to visit, summer and winter also have their appeal.

If you want to experience the summer activities in South Korea , the best time tends to be late May and June. Summer temperatures usually peak in July, and the summer weather is far more pleasant in the earlier half of the season.

If you are interested in learning to surf in Korea or experiencing some of the stunning beaches , then May and June are the best times. This is due to the weather being nice (and sunny) but not yet being overly hot.

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul? 1

Snowing in Seoul, near Sungshin Women’s University .

If, on the other hand, you want to experience the Korean winter , consider visiting in December. Visiting in December means you get to experience winter without having the extreme dryness of February.

Usually, the first snowfall is in late November/early December. This makes late December and early January a great time to experience the winter activities and attractions of Korea.

Times to Avoid Visiting Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace Winter

Winter in Korea can be stunning. It can also be incredibly cold and dry.

You can have an amazing time in Korea no matter when you visit. Just keep in mind that these times are often avoided by travellers due to the unpleasant weather conditions. In the case of Chuseok and Seollal, you may find that a lot of activities and locations are closed for the holiday.

Chuseok is a Korean holiday which lasts for 3 days (although it is usually joined with a weekend, making the celebration 5 days long). This holiday usually occurs at the end of September/start of October.

Dates: 2020 – September 30th to October 4th. 2021 – September 18th to September 22nd. Updated dates can be found here .

Reasons to avoid Chuseok: Chuseok is Korea’s largest national holiday and it is a time when families reconnect. While some stores and attractions will remain open, a large amount will be closed. It is a very peaceful time and the cities will be very quiet for a few days.

However, if you have plans during Chuseok you may find them interrupted. Many national attractions will remain open, and some will offer free admission for the period of the holiday. This includes palaces and national museums among other attractions. However, many private stores and businesses will be closed.

If you expect to travel within Korea during this event, expect to pay astronomical prices for transport. Especially if you haven’t booked months in advance.

Wondering what activities and attractions still operate throughout Chuseok? I have a full guide to Chuseok and Seollal activities .

Seollal is another holiday similar to Chuseok. The event represents the lunar new year and usually takes place in late January or early February.

Dates: 2020: January 24th – January 26th. 2021: February 12th to February 14th. Updated dates can be found here .

Reasons to avoid Seollal: Seollal is much like Chuseok in that many places will be closed. While the event isn’t as major as Chuseok, you may still find that it interrupts your plans.

During Seollal many privately owned businesses and attractions will be closed. The whole city of Seoul will also become very quiet as families visit their homes. While it can be a great time to look around in peace, make sure that the attractions you want to visit operate through the holiday.

As with Chuseok, make sure to book any domestic trips that you want to take months in advance. Transport costs will skyrocket for the Seollal period.

July and Early August

Korea Monsoon Season

July and August bring a lot of rain to the peninsula.

Not only are July and August the peaks of summer, but they are the beginning of the monsoon season. Not only are the temperatures often unpleasant (up to 40 degrees), but it is also incredibly muggy and at times, very very wet.

While the monsoon season continues throughout August, it is generally at its worst in the first half of the month.

Reasons to avoid July and August: Not only are these to hottest months in the year, but the rain can also ruin plans very easily. July and August are best spent enjoying the beaches in Korea along with festivals like the Boryeong Mud Festival.

However, for normal tourist activities such as visiting the palaces, this is a very unpleasant time. If you are visiting Busan or a coastal city, you will have a much better time in these months. Make sure to avoid visiting Seoul in late July and early August if you can help it.

Late January and Early February

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul? 2

Korea in winter is beautiful. Unfortunately, it’s also very chilly!

Likewise to July and August being the peak of summer, January and February are the peak of winter. Throughout these months the weather is often -10 and sometimes as low as -20. While this might not seem low for some people, it is also extremely dry.

This can make doing any outdoor activities unpleasant and can make a trip to Korea rather limiting.

Reasons to avoid early January and February: While the weather won’t seem cold for everyone, the dryness makes spending time outdoors quite unpleasant. If you want to experience winter in Korea, then December is your best choice.

December and early January are usually also the best times to see snow in Korea. While snow is rather unpredictable and big snowfalls only occur once or twice every winter, these months are your best bet.

Best Seasons to Visit Seoul

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul? 3

Wondering what season is the best to visit Seoul? You’ve come to the right place! In this section, I will go over the weather in each season as well as the activities and highlights of each of the four seasons.

In Korea, there are four very distinct seasons – each of which lasts for around three months. Although this means that Korea has many different attractions and activities every season, it can also make it very difficult to decide when to visit Korea.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Korea feels totally different from season to season. Winter, for example, can make the cities feel quite dreary. On the other hand, spring always makes the country feel very lively and exciting.

Namsan Park

Namsan Park in Spring

Spring is a very popular time to visit Seoul as it is the cherry blossom season. Not only that, but it also has some of the mildest weather of the Seoul seasons.

Temperature: Spring in Seoul begins in March and continues until late May. March weather usually has highs between 10 and 15 degrees and lows down to 0 degrees. In April, the weather will warm up a bit with temperatures widely ranging from 15-28 degrees highs and 5-12 lows. In May, the highs are usually within the ’20s and the lows will be in the mid-teens.

The best time to visit Seoul in spring depends on what kind of climate you prefer. March can still be a bit cold for some people, and many prefer April and May.

Generally, weather in spring is calm with no major standout features. The biggest weather element is yellow-dust. In spring the dust blows from eastern China over South Korea and it can make a fine-dust mask necessary at times. The good news is that usually there will also be some clear days.

If you are on a short term visit then the dust won’t have serious effects (which you can read more about here – Seoul Fine Dust ). However, it may limit visibility and will make some attractions such as Namsan Tower and Lotte Tower a bit less breathtaking. Considering that the dust makes it harder to breathe though must mean that it IS breathtaking?

While the daytime weather in Seoul in spring is very mild, it is worth noting that the nights can still be cold. Especially in March! If you plan to do activities at night , make sure to pack some warm clothes.

What to Wear in Seoul Spring

In spring you want to make sure to pack for two different types of weather. Make sure to bring T-shirts and cooler clothing for the warmer days. However, make sure to also bring a light jacket, light jersey, and other light (but warm) clothing for the colder days.

Light jackets like these are ideal – for men . For women .

Spring is often still too cold to wear open footwear, so make sure that you bring some closed footwear and have socks.

If you are visiting in spring, make sure to bring the correct fine-dust mask . My recommended dust mask is the reusable Cambridge Mask .

Popular Spring Activities

Seoul Forest Lake

Spring brings life to Korea, and especially to Seoul. If you want to experience the many fantastic gardens that Seoul has to offer then spring is the time to visit. The cherry blossom season begins in mid-march and ends in mid-April. Seoul is usually towards the end of the season due to being located further north.

Spring is also a fantastic time to take day trips outside of Seoul. If you enjoy hiking, then you are in luck! There are many fantastic hikes within a few hours of Seoul – and even a few within the city!

There are a lot of festivals in spring and most of them are related to the cherry blossoms. Since they are the main attraction of the season, you will find no lack of tours that will take you to stunning locations around the city.

Still not sure what to do in spring? Check out these fantastic spring tours! Mt. Goryeosan Azalea Festival  (day trip from Seoul). Taean Tulip Festival (day trip from Seoul). Seoul Vicinity Tour (Nami Island, Petite France, and more!). Seoraksan National Park Tour .

Hajodae Beach Summer

Summer is a great time to get out of Seoul and visit Hajodae !

Summer in Seoul can be HOT. It’s a fantastic time to visit, but make sure that you pack some cool clothes and your swimsuit!

Summer in Seoul begins in June and continues throughout July and August. The peak is usually found in late July and early August before temperatures begin to drop again in September.

Temperature: Temperatures in June will begin to reach the ‘30s with lows in the high-teens. For many people, June is the ideal summer month. In July, temperatures will begin to reach the mid-‘30s with lows in the low twenties. Finally, in August, temperatures will often be in the mid-’30s with some days reaching as high as 40 degrees. Lows will be in the mid-twenties.

Throughout July is the Korean rainy season. While the temperatures are at their peak at this time, so is the rain. As such, it is vital to remember a raincoat and to take an umbrella with you when you go out.

This also means that July is very humid. If you are planning to visit in July or August make sure to bring light clothes that allow air to pass through to keep you cool.

What to Wear in Seoul Summer

If you are planning to visit Seoul in the summer then make sure to pack cool clothes! Any clothes that allow air to pass through are ideal as you will sweat lots.

Open footwear is ideal in summer as having the most ventilation possible is needed.

If you are visiting in July, then make sure to bring a jacket that can protect you from the rain. Light jackets like these are ideal – for men . For women .

If you plan to visit beaches or waterparks then make sure to also bring swimwear and any other equipment you might need for swimming.

Korea is a conservative country and wearing revealing clothing was generally something that was better avoided. However, this is gradually changing and these days clothing is becoming less conservative. With that being said, it’s something to keep in mind.

The same goes for swimwear. Many people advise against wearing just a bikini. However, when visiting Surfyy Beach and Boryeong this year bikinis were very common amongst the swimmers. As such, this is slowly becoming less of an issue and if you wear a bikini in Korea today, you will most likely be fine.

Finally, make sure to bring an insulated water bottle . These bottles are cheap and will help you keep your water cool no matter how warm it is outside.

Popular Summer Activities

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul? 5

The Boryeong Mud Festival is one of the summer’s many fantastic events!

With the summer hitting Seoul, it is the best time to get out and see the beaches around the city. A short two-hour bus ride will take you to some of the most pristine and fun beaches on the peninsula.

Not only this but escaping from the city means that the temperatures will be a few degrees lower.

Hajodae Beach and Sokcho are both fantastic beaches that are located close to Seoul and are very clean and fun.

Summer is also a great time to do indoor activities around the city. You will often find yourself wanting to browse stores just to get out of the heat! As such, this makes summer in Seoul a great time to explore the inside areas of the city.

From DDP to museums and art galleries, to exploring the cafe culture of Seoul. Even if you stay indoors, there is a lot to do!

Summer also has some great festivals related to keeping cool in the heat. The Boryeong Mud Festival is a very popular festival that takes place a few hours south of Seoul. The Sinchon Water Gun Festival is an event that takes place within Seoul and will help you keep cool!

Another popular Korean summer activity is to visit waterparks located near Seoul. These waterparks are essentially theme parks that are full of activities to keep you cool. Ocean World and Caribbean Bay are the two most popular (and closest to Seoul).

Still not sure what to do in summer?  Why not go ice skating to cool off ? Or try some Korean food with the Seoul Night Food Tour . If you are more adventurous, why not try the DMZ Tour with White Water Rafting (summer exclusive event)?

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Summer?

When Is the Best Season to Visit Seoul? 6

Summer in Seoul is very hot and humid, and this makes it a great time to get out of the city and to explore the nearby beaches and coastal areas.

If you want to experience the coastal areas of Korea and the many festivals, then summer is the best time to visit.

Colourful Korean Countryside

Fall colours in the Korean countryside.

Along with spring, fall is also a very popular time to visit Seoul. Fall lasts from September to November and begins quite warm before the temperature begins to drop.

Temperature: September sees highs around 30 degrees and lows around 20. October’s temperature begins to drop and 20 becomes the average high and 10 the average low. Finally, in November the highs drop to 10-15 degrees and the lows will occasionally drop below 0.

If you are visiting in fall then I would recommend October. October is a beautiful month as you can see the fall foliage in Seoul. I would put October and April as the best months to visit South Korea and Seoul.

There are a lot of different parks in Seoul and they are stunning in fall. World Cup Stadium , in particular, becomes a fantastic place to visit in fall.

What to Wear in Seoul Fall

Earlier fall (September) is still quite warm and you can easily get away with bringing the same clothes that are needed in spring.

This means a light jacket and sweater, closed in shoes and also a set of long pants (or two). But also remember that September can be quite warm, so it’s also worth bringing some summer clothes.

In the second half of fall, you will want to bring warmer clothes. Make sure to bring some thermal underclothes as well as a warm hat, and a scarf.

If you bring a few thermal underclothes then you shouldn’t need a heavy jacket in fall.

Popular Fall Activities

Haneul Garden Sunset

Fall sunset at Haneul Garden.

Similar to spring, many of the fall activities in Seoul are related to nature. Since the indoor activities are unaffected by the weather, I would recommend visiting in the season that has the outdoor activities that you want to witness.

Seoul and the area around the city have a multitude of stunning places to view fall foliage .

Fall is also one of the best times to experience Korean culture and participate in a temple stay. Not only this, but it’s also one of the best times to explore the palaces in Seoul and take Hanbok photos.

Fall in Korea is also the time of the Cheonggycheon Lantern Festival. Cheonggyecheon itself is a place that should be visited, and the festival makes it even more beautiful!

There are also a lot of fall festivals around the peninsula .

Still not sure what to do in fall?  Seoraksan Mountain Tour  – stunning fall colours. Yangpyeong Rail Bike Ride – Another way to enjoy the beautiful fall colours. Incheon Fall Foliage Tour .

Why Should You Visit Seoul in Fall?

Daedunsan Fall Colours

If you love fall foliage then Seoul is a fantastic place to visit during the fall. There are many stunning gardens and parks which become even more beautiful in this season.

Visiting in fall is also a great time to visit to avoid the extreme hot and cold temperatures of winter and summer.

Gyeongbokgung Winter

Gyeongbokgung Palace in winter is an entirely different place!

Finally, we come to winter. Winter in Seoul can become very cold and dry. With that being said, some unique activities make winter an attractive time to visit!

Many people visit Seoul expecting to see snow. While snow can be seen sometimes, snowfall in Seoul is quite rare and usually only happens two or three times every winter. If seeing snow is your main intention, you are better off leaving the city.

Winter in Seoul begins in December and ends in February. Typically late January and early February are the coldest months.

Temperature: In December, high temperatures average about 7 degrees. Lows will fall to the low minuses (0 to -5). In January, high temperatures will drop to 0 degrees and lows will fall even further to -10. February has very similar temperatures to January, except that the second half of the month will begin to warm again.

Something else to note is that Christmas in Korea is a couples day, rather than a family day. You will find that most stores and attractions remain open (it’s not a public holiday in Korea). If you do visit around Christmas, expect to see a lot of couples.

What to Wear in Seoul Winter

The Seoul Winter can be very cold and as such, it is important to pack warm clothes.

If you are visiting Seoul in the winter make sure to bring a heavy jacket (such as a ski jacket), as well as some heavy sweaters and warm underclothes.

You will also be wanting to bring warm gloves, socks, and warm headwear. If possible, also try and bring warm shoes that are waterproof. While this isn’t essential, it will be far more pleasant without wet feet!

An insulated water bottle is also great in winter. These bottles are cheap and will help you keep your drink warm no matter how cold it is outside.

Popular Winter Activities

Seoraksan Biseondae

Bukhansan Mountain in winter.

Winter in Seoul has a few unique activities with sledging and ice-skating activities popping up over the city. Skiing is also very popular, and a few venues can be found a few hours outside of the city.

Many visitors love to experience warming Korean cuisine in winter, and this is also one of my favourite activities. From street vendors to restaurants, there is a lot of food to eat!

Everland (a theme park near Seoul) has ice skating and sledging in winter and attracts a lot of people. If you are more interested in skiing, then Vivaldi Park has you covered.

Due to the weather, winter is also a great time to explore the inside areas of Seoul. This means museums, shopping, and even experiencing the cafe culture of Seoul !

The Best Time to Visit South Korea

best season to visit seoul korea

 TripSavvy /  Bailey Mariner

Any time of the year is a good time to visit the Korean peninsula, but the best time to visit South Korea occurs during the spring and autumn months—the former from mid-April to mid-June, and the latter from September to October.

Visit during either season, and you’ll avoid South Korea’s temperature extremes, while arriving just in time to see some of the country’s top tourist attractions. Compared to the peninsula’s hot, wet summers and frigid winters, South Korea’s spring and autumn offer relatively rain-free days, mild temperatures, and technicolor foliage—coinciding with major festivals like Chuseok (the autumn harvest holiday) and the Jeju Fire Festival.

Weather in South Korea

South Korea is a great destination to experience all four seasons in Asia. You’ll find something to love in each season (even the infamously humid summers), but the best time to visit will depend on your love (or tolerance) of snow, sun, or rain—and where you plan to go.

Northwest South Korea—Seoul

Located near the border with North Korea and a short distance from the Yellow Sea, the capital city of Seoul experiences colder-than-usual winters due to exposure to the frigid winds blowing in from the north. The same prevailing winds also blow in dust from China and Mongolia, known as Hwang Sa or yellow dust, which can make for bad air quality.

Monsoon winds in the summer cause torrential rains to fall, rising to a peak of 14-15 inches in the summer months of July and August.

The temperature in Seoul ranges from 21 to 35 degrees F (-6 to 2 degrees C) in January to 72 to 85 degrees F (22 to 30 degrees C) in August. Humidity swings from 60 percent in January to 76 percent in August. The northwest region of South Korea experiences some 57.11 inches of rainfall yearly.

Northeast South Korea—Pyeongchang

Host of the 2018 Winter Olympics, the mountainous county of Pyeongchang in Gangwon-do Province enjoys temperature highs of 61 to 73 degrees F (16 to 23 degrees C) in July, and frigid lows of 9 to 28 degrees F (-12.6 to -2.5 degrees C) in January. Thanks to its average elevation of 2,460 feet (750 meters) Pyeongchang enjoys longer winters and shorter summers than the rest of the peninsula.

Pyeongchang hits its stride during ski season between November and March. This is when temperatures drop low enough for skiers and other snow-sports lovers to make the trek up to Pyeongchang’s ski resorts.

The area is one of the snowiest areas in South Korea, experiencing an average of 12 snowy days a month from December to March.

Southern Coast—Busan

The climate in South Korea’s southernmost cities feels milder than counterpart areas up north, with winters barely dropping below 32 degrees F (0 degrees C). However, the city of Busan experiences more intense monsoon conditions between July and August, with the occasional typhoon battering the area.

Busan’s temperatures reach a peak between May and September, with temperatures hitting between 74 and 85 degrees F (23 and 29 degrees C) in August. Temperatures drop to their lowest in Busan during January, with temperatures recorded at 31 degrees F (-1 degrees C).

Peak Season in South Korea

The summer high season coincides with kids’ summer vacations, spurring South Koreans to travel with their families. The prices for air travel and hotel accommodation rise along with the temperature.

The major festivals of Chuseok and Seollal are also inconvenient for foreign travelers, as many establishments will close over the course of the festival, and locals travel to their hometowns to visit family.

Time your trip instead for the spring and fall months, where crowds are much more manageable and the weather avoids the extremes of either summer or winter. In Seoul, the months of December to February represent the low season, with the promise of cheaper prices at all class tiers.

Spring in South Korea

One of the best times of the year to visit, springtime in South Korea occurs between April and June. Expect average daily temperatures from 59 to 65 degrees F (15 to 18 degrees C) during the day. Cool breezes with ample sunshine predominate, though springtime also brings the peak of the “yellow dust” ( hwang sa ), fine dust storms blowing in from China and Mongolia.

Events to check out:

  • Cherry blossom festivals: Cherry trees bloom throughout South Korea in spring. Gyeongju and Jinhae celebrate their respective cherry blossom festivals between March and April.
  • Boseong Green Tea Festival : Celebrate everything matcha-related in South Korea’s primary green tea-cultivating capital in early May.
  • Buddha’s Birthday: South Korea’s biggest temples celebrate Vesak with candlelight parades; the biggest occurs in Seoul and runs for two weeks in early May.
  • Jongmyo Royal Ancestral Ritual : Despite the extinction of Korea’s monarchy, royal ancestral rites are still held annually at the Jongmyo Shrine in Seoul. First Sunday every May.

Summer in South Korea

High heat and humidity make summer a not-so-popular time to visit South Korea, thanks to daytime temperatures hitting 73 to 86 degrees F (23 to 30 degrees C) and monsoon rains drenching the peninsula.

  • Ultra Korea Music Festival : A major stop on the world EDM festival circuit, the two-day Ultra Korea Festival in mid-June has hosted major celebrities like Deadmau5 and Armin van Buuren.
  • Dano Festival: A traditional mask and shaman festival held on the coastal city of Gangneung, celebrating the ongoing protection of a guardian mountain god. It's held on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
  • Boryeong Mud Festival : Get down and dirty in this week-long celebration of all things muddy in mid-July, from tug-of-war to wrestling to every little excuse to slide in the local “therapeutic” mud baths. Mid-July.
  • Geumsan Insam Festival : Geumsan County specializes in the cultivation of the ginseng root crop, and celebrates it annually with a festival celebrating traditional medicine in late September or early October.

Autumn in South Korea

Bringing an end to summer’s humidity and heat, the autumn months from September to November combine cooler winds with beautifully riotous fall colors, bringing droves of tourists to the country’s National Parks.

Expect average daily temperatures of 66 to 70 degrees F (19 to 21 degrees C) in the first half of autumn—but as temperatures continue to descend, warmer clothing will be in order.

  • Chuseok: Also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving is a time for family reunions, gift-giving and the consumption of seasonal foods. Chuseok falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.
  • Busan International Film Festival : A showcase for Asia’s young and hungry directors in October—combining world premieres for major Asian releases as well as masterclasses from famous cinema professionals and an awards show.
  • Andong Mask Dance Festival : A traditional festival in late September with shamanic roots, celebrated in the city of Andong. Folk dance groups from all over South Korea come to show their traditional moves.
  • Seoul Lantern Festival : This festival of lights in November illuminates Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon Stream with traditional lanterns.

Winter in South Korea

From December to March, the winter months in South Korea bring only occasional snowfall—as much as 25 days of snow per year in Seoul, down to only five days in southern cities like Busan. The temperature follows the same north-to-south pattern, with January lows of 27.5 degrees F (-2.5 degrees C) in Seoul and 37.5 degrees F (3 degrees C) in Busan.

  • Lighting Festival at The Garden of Morning Calm : South Korea’s biggest festival of lights uses over 330,000 square meters of lighting to illuminates a famous garden in Gapyeong County. December to March.
  • Seollal (Lunar New Year): Koreans celebrate Lunar New Year with temple rites, family feasts, and commemorations of the ancestors. The dates of Seollal are vary from year to year.
  • Jeju Fire Festival : During this March festival, farmers in Jeju throw a massive incendiary festival culminating in the burning of daljip bonfire piles to ensure a good harvest.

The best time to visit South Korea is in the spring or fall when you can avoid the extreme cold of winter and extreme heat of summer. These times of year tend to be drier as well with fewer rainy days.

The cherry blossom season typically takes place sometime in March or April and the blooms last for about two weeks.

South Korea experiences all four seasons with snowy winters and humid summers. It is rainiest in the summer between June and September and you're most likely to get some snow in late December and January.

Seoul in Winter

The season of winter in Seoul begins in the month of December and lasts until mid-March. I guess there is no need to tell what this season is all about. The weather remains cold and chilly. It is not an unfavorable time to visit; however, if you are not a fan of cooler temperatures, then it is better to avoid this season to explore Seoul.

Since Seoul in winter doesn’t receive a high footfall of tourists, the prices of accommodations and flight tickets are relatively lower during these months. But, what I love about visiting Seoul in this season is Seoul’s palaces and shrines that are covered with a sheet of snow and offer exquisite views to relish. Since winter in Seoul is quite cold, the temperature of the city during this time ranges from -5°C to 4°C.

I guess there is no need to tell what to pack for winters in Seoul. But, seeing that the season of winter witnesses a considerable snowfall, it’s good to pack some warm clothes. When to go to South Korea

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

The best time of year to visit South Korea is generally considered to be the spring months of April, May & June, and the autumn months of September, October & November. During these two seasons days are typically sunny and dry with comfortable average temperatures.

South Korea weather & when to go

Pick a month below.

Weather seasons are becoming less predictable but peak visitor months remain more certain.

Unfollow the herd - avoid the peak months to enjoy fewer crowds, better availability, often lusher countryside and help to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

Weather overview

Unlike many other Asian destinations, South Korean weather is fairly straightforward and easy to understand. There are only minimal regional variations throughout the country, and the year divides neatly into four distinct seasons.

There is a delightful spring (April to June), a muggy and wet summer (July to August), a refreshing autumn (September to November) and a freezing cold, snowy but dry winter (December to March). The main regional temperature differences in South Korea are accounted for by the country’s altitudinous interior and its warmer, but windier, coastline. Japan and China protect South Korea from most of the area’s typhoons, but one or two still manage to get through each year during the summer months.

April to June

Typically lasting from April to June, spring is often seen as the best time of year to visit South Korea, with average daily temperatures a pleasant 15 - 18°C. During this time the flowers are in bloom and green spaces are bathed in the delightful hues of the pink cherry blossom, especially the city of Gyeongju. The weather is the least likely to be inclement and, as a result, many festivals and events can be found taking place.

Join the locals in heading for the hills and making the most of the many National Parks, such as Songnisan, Seoraksan and Jirisan. You can expect sunny days but you should also count on destinations being more crowded as it is the most popular time to visit South Korea.

July to August

The brief summer lasts from July to August and is the hottest time of the year in South Korea. Temperatures may range between 23°C and 30°C but this is also the wettest time of the year, with the monsoon rains bringing half of the country’s annual rainfall during these months.

It can be incredibly humid so you may find yourself seeking sanctuary in the many air-conditioned spaces of Seoul or relishing the sea breezes of coastal cities like Busan, where the famous Haeundae Beach is packed with people and parasols, and the southern holiday island of Jeju.

September to November

Once the muggy heat and rains of summer have passed, South Korea once again bursts into colour and festivals come to the fore. Stunning shades of orange and red pepper the autumnal landscapes - particularly throughout the country's National Parks such as Songnisan, Jirisan and Seoraksan. Long into October the weather is usually mild enough to sport a t-shirt during the day in the seaside resorts of Jeju - and even higher in the hills - but after this you will need to think about packing some extra layers. The mild temperatures (avg temp: 19-21°C), low rainfall and natural beauty make autumn a strong rival to spring as the best time of year to visit South Korea.

December to March

South Korea is indeed a land of extremes and nowhere is this more apparent than in the sudden drop of temperature that winter brings. From summer highs of 30°C the temperatures in winter can plummet to as low as -20°C on occasion in the northern regions of the Gangwon-do Province, although it can be significantly milder along the southern coast and on the holiday island of Jeju in the far south.

Falling between December and March, the long winter is freezing cold but relatively dry, and certainly charming. Crisp, white snow can be expected creating romantic views you can enjoy without the madding crowds of spring. Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy ski-ing and snowboarding at the ski resorts in the Gyeonggi-do Province and in Gangwon-do which sees a higher than average annual snowfall.

Some of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Seoul include Yeouido Park and Changdeokgung Palace.

The Best Time Of The Year To Visit Seoul

If you’re planning a visit to South Korea , of course, you can't miss visiting its capital. But with four unique seasons, when is the best time to visit Seoul? In a modern city surrounded by a beautiful, mountainous environment, checking the weather forecast and temperature before you visit is a must.

Summer and winter in Seoul can be extreme, and with climate change on the rise summers are becoming even hotter! There's plenty to do and see in Seoul throughout the year and this guide will help to decide which time is best for you depending on what you'd like to experience.

What to expect throughout the year

What to expect throughout the year

The best times to visit Seoul are spring (from March to May) and Autumn (between September to November) when the weather is pretty mild, there are no extreme temperatures, and prices for hotels and traveling are not too high.

June through to August is known as monsoon season, and generally best avoided - the summers here are hot, humid, and accommodation prices sky-rocket. Winter on the other hand sees temperatures plummeting below freezing and the city sees its fair share of snow.

But to help you out here’s a breakdown of each season in Seoul so you can decide when the right time of year to visit is for you!

What to expect in spring

What to expect in spring

Temperatures are moderate and there’s not too much rain; spring in Seoul is mild. April brings with it an explosion of pastel pink - cherry blossom season. The city’s parks, historic castles, and sacred temples are transformed by the arrival of these beautiful trees blossoming.

On the flip side of this good news, April is also when the infamous yellow dust or hwangsa descends upon the city. This phenomenon is caused by dust from storms in the Gobi Desert and leaves a wake of haze and pollution behind it - not the best time of year to be in Korea if you suffer from allergies or asthma.

Things to do in spring

March is when the city starts to waken from its winter hibernation and you can really start making the most of the spectacular hiking trails which wind their way through Seoul’s mountains.

In the heart of the city is the Namsam Mountain, but Seoul is surrounded by a 157km long route that is broken up into 8 unique courses of varying difficulties, so bring your hiking boots and get outdoors !

If you’re lucky, you may also be around for the Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival although the dates vary each year depending on when the 1700 Korean Cherry Trees are expected to blossom.

What to expect in summer

What to expect in summer

If you do want to visit Seoul during the summer , June is the best month to do so. Temperatures are warm (an average of around 21 degrees Celsius) but the evenings can still get cool, and the torrential summer rains haven’t yet arrived.

This all changes in July, when the monsoon season begins. Downpours can seem never-ending, and with such high oppressive heat and high humidity storms can be a daily occurrence. The monsoons continue into August, and this is usually the month when Seoul will experience a typhoon. As well as soaring temperatures, expect accommodation prices to shoot up too.

Things to do in summer

Things to do in summer

With extreme humidity and the weather being muggy every day, you’ll want to spend a lot of time in the city’s air-conditioned malls and museums.

Although there are plenty of festivals over summer like the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival and the Sinchon Water Gun Festival, you’ll probably spend a lot of your time queuing to get into museums and visit historic attractions like the rest of Seoul.

August is holiday time so everyone from school kids to businessmen are on vacation, so unless you want to spend your time fighting your way through crowds and staying indoors as much as possible, summer is best avoided!

What to expect in fall

What to expect in fall

With an unpredictable start to the season (September days can either feel like summer is never going to end, or autumn has arrived too soon with temperatures fluctuating), fall comes into its own by October and is undoubtedly one of the best times of the year to visit.

Temperatures get much cooler (an average of 13 degrees Celsius by October) and the monsoon season is well and truly over. Expect little rain, a mild climate, and best of all, the explosion of fall colors.

Everywhere from the granite mountains which encircle the city to the parks and gardens of the city itself are swathed in stunning red, gold, and orange as the leaves take on their autumn hues.

The country's biggest festival, Chuseok, also takes place in September or October so expect huge crowds, long queues, and domestic travel to be almost impossible if your trip falls at the same time.

Things to do in fall

Things to do in fall

Like in spring, the climate at this time of year makes hiking the city’s mountain trails a dream, and even better you’ll be surrounded by blazing fall colors which make the city seem just so much more beautiful. Autumn is one of the driest times of the year, so you’re unlikely to get caught in a downpour in the middle of your hike too!

Added to this, there are plenty of festivals taking place so you’re spoiled for choice if you’re looking for exciting things to do. From the Seoul Lantern Festival to the Kimchi Festival to the Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival, every month has more than its fair share to choose from.

One of Korea’s biggest annual festivals also takes place either in September or October; Chuseok is the traditional harvest festival and sees families returning to their home towns to celebrate with feasts of seasonal food and pay respects to their ancestors.

What to expect in winter

What to expect in winter

With its seasons of extremes, winter sees temperatures plummeting below freezing and thick snowfall blanketing the city in white, particularly in January.

The cold temperatures also keep the crowds away, meaning you can find great deals on accommodation and flights, and you won’t be stuck in queues to see the main attractions.

The Lunar New Year takes place in either late January or early February, and the city explodes into a riot of celebrating with traditional foods, wearing traditional dress, and playing folk games.

What can you do in winter?

See another side of Seoul and experience its traditional hanok villages and ancient palaces as they’re enveloped in a magical layer of snow.

Make the most of the snow and hit one of the nearby ski resorts if the fresh powder is your thing, or relax in a jjimjilbangs , a traditional Korean spa, to keep warm!

Christmas festivities are also a great excuse to visit Seoul in December, and there are plenty of opportunities to get merry, Seoul style!

So when is the best time to visit Seoul?

So when is the best time to visit Seoul?

Ultimately, it depends on whether you’re visiting with a specific festival or activity in mind. Unless you really do want to experience the intoxicating, dizzying, unique atmosphere of the major festivals like Chuseok and the Lunar New Year, it’s best to avoid these times completely.

The best tip ? August is also best avoided at costs; if the heat and humidity aren't enough to keep you away, the crowds might be. If you want to experience the best of what Seoul has to offer, April or October are the best bets.

Both have mild temperatures and little rainfall, and are the months where Seoul is at its most beautiful. April sees the city explode in the pastel pinks of the cherry blossoms whilst in October the parks and surrounding mountains are carpeted in red and gold as the leaves start to change colour.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

Man smiling leaning over a balcony, in South Korea

South Korea  is prone to experiencing extreme temperatures and weather conditions in both summer and winter so the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. During this time the weather is moderate with mild conditions (less chance of rain and low humidity levels), making it comfortable enough to spend long periods of time exploring this country’s bustling cities and beautiful landscapes.

The best time to visit Seoul is during the spring season when temperatures are at an average of 60°F and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Unsurprisingly, this is also one of the most popular times to visit the buzzing city, so you expect larger crowds at popular sites and increased prices. But there really isn’t a ‘bad’ time to visit Seoul as there’s always so much going on regardless of the season.

The best time to visit Busan can often be split between April (if you’re after cool to mild weather and cherry blossoms) and June (if you’re looking for warm temperatures and beach time). But generally, the months of May and June will give you the most agreeable weather conditions with little chance of rainfall and moderate humidity levels.

Best for: snow-based activities and winter festivals

If you’re traveling to South Korea in January, remember to pack your thermal clothing, a beanie, gloves, thick socks and scarves because the weather will be cold – like freezing cold. January is the coldest month of the year in South Korea which makes sense with average low temperatures sitting at 20°F.

Unfortunately, average high temperatures aren’t much better at 36°F but you will have the larger cities and popular sites largely to yourself which is a silver lining. If you want to make the most of the snow, head to ski resort towns around Pyeongchang or visit various winter festivals around the country such as the Seogwipo Penguin Festival on Jeju Island or Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival in Taebaek.

Best for: hanging out in bathhouses and café hopping

South Korea’s still well and truly in the middle of winter in February (although it’s technically the last month of the season) with temperatures at a chilly 40°F average (slightly warmer than previous months so there’s light at the end of the snow-covered tunnel). Weather conditions themselves aren’t too bad with clear, sunny mornings (albeit cold ones) that turn into cloudy afternoons, especially as the month goes on.

Best for: flower festivals, bamboo forests and historical sightseeing

Frozen landscapes are thawing out in South Korea in March with the first signs of spring right around the corner. While avid snow-seekers can still catch some of the fluffy white stuff at the beginning of the month, temperatures will increase as the month goes on with high averages around 52°F. Daylight hours are also getting longer with an average of 11 hours experienced per day, perfect for exploring historical sites in Gyeongju and wandering around the bamboo forests of Damyang.

Best for: hiking and the cherry blossom festival

Spring is here in South Korea in April and so are the flowers! One of the most popular months to visit because of the cherry blossoms, April sees plenty of travelers so expect large crowds wherever you go and increased flight prices and accommodation. The mild weather experienced is also favorable for spending long periods of time outside with warmer days of 65°F scattered throughout the month.

To make the most of the nice weather after the long months of winter, hiking through South Korea’s national parks is a popular activity, especially with flowers in full bloom and relatively clear days to take in the magnificent scenery. But most people travel to South Korea in April for the famous Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival on the country’s south coast for a closer look at the beautiful flowers.

Best for: tea plantation visits and wandering ancient palaces

May is a fantastic time to visit South Korea as the cherry blossom crowds have largely disappeared but the peak summer crowds haven’t yet arrived, so you won’t be faced with higher prices or low availability. Temperatures are also getting warmer with averages of 68°F but there’s an increased chance of rainfall, especially towards the end of the month.  While the nice weather conditions suit outdoor activities, air quality can be affected by dust storms and soil particles, so be mindful of any allergies you have that may be worsened by the smogginess in larger cities. If you want to stay inside, ancient palaces such as Changgyonggung and Gyeongbokgung.

Best for: water-based activities and picnic lunches in city gardens

While June might be the start of summer in South Korea, it’s also the beginning of monsoon season with heavy rains and high humidity levels expected. For this reason, large crowds tend to steer clear of traveling during the month so the bigger cities and popular sites should be relatively quiet.

Temperatures can reach a warm 78°F during the month, but humidity also climbs to 70%, which can make it feel hotter than it is. To escape the often oppressive-feeling heat, many travelers flock to the country’s coastal areas in search of golden sand and clear waters. Beachgoing is a popular pastime in June as the beaches are less crowded than in the coming months and resort prices aren’t yet at their peak.

Best for: island hopping, swimming and beach lounging

Summer is at its peak in July in South Korea but so are the humidity levels which sit at a sweltering 90%. So it makes sense that holiday-makers flock to destinations like Jeju Island in search of ways to cool off (read: lounging on the beach and going for a swim). But be sure to stake out a spot early in the morning before summer holiday crowds descend.

Temperatures rarely dip below 68°F in July, instead averaging around 80°F during the day, so ensure you’re packing lots of lightweight, breathable clothing and sun-protective items such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Best for: dolphin spotting and water sports

August in South Korea starts off just as hot and humid as July, but weather conditions start to level out as the month draws on until temperatures sit at a more comfortable average of 68°F. But it’s still a popular month to leave the busy cities behind in favor of sandy shores and clear waters, so you can expect large crowds in beachside destinations. You might even spot a bottlenose dolphin or two if you’re heading to Jeju Island.

Best for: exploring national parks and camping

Say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn as hot and sticky temperatures give way to cooler conditions. The large crowds of summer have gone and with it, the consistent heavy rainfall (although a few showers here and there can still be expected). Temperatures average around 66°F, which is perfect for exploring the great outdoors, especially when the landscape starts to turn an array of reds, oranges and golden browns.

Best for: appreciating the autumn scenery and Halloween celebrations

It might not be as iconic as the cherry blossom season, but the autumn colours that descend upon South Korea in October deserve just as much love and appreciation. Whether it’s exploring a national park, a day trip to Nami Island or a walk through a lively city garden, there’s beautiful autumn foliage to be seen everywhere you go.

The weather’s very comfortable too with conditions staying dry and temperatures averaging a cool 64°F. While you can still do all of the normal ‘touristy’ things like visit the Demilitarised Zone and other historic areas, October sees a whole heap of festive Halloween celebrations including parades, haunted houses and parties.

Best for: tasting traditional food and museum visits

While it’s still technically autumn, the oranges, reds and browns of October aren’t as crisp and temperatures are getting colder as the season makes way for winter. If you’re keen to stay out of the 40°F weather, November is a good month for museum wanderings and tasting some of South Korea’s most traditional food – think ddukbokki, bibimbap and kimchi.

Best for: holiday festivals and Christmas celebrations

Forget Europe or North America’s east coast, South Korea is where you want to be when December 25th rolls around! Large cities like Seoul and Busan really go all out with their Christmas decorations – think lanterns, colorful fairy lights and festive displays – and there’s nothing like a white Christmas with temperatures of around 37°F and lots of snow predicted during the month.

And just when you think it couldn’t get any more magical, there are plenty of holiday activities to keep you occupied during your visit such as ice skating at the Seoul City Hall or watching the annual Christmas Tree Festival in Busan. You can also head to the slopes outside of the city to participate in various snow sports like skiing and snowboarding.

cherry blossom in korea

Awesome Things to Do in Busan

If you’re planning a trip to Korea, choosing the best time to visit can be a tough decision. With four distinct seasons, each offering its own unique charm, there’s no shortage of options to choose from. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at each season and help you decide the best time to visit Korea.

1. Spring (March-May)

Spring is undoubtedly one of the most popular times to visit Korea, thanks to its mild temperatures, beautiful cherry blossoms, and lively festivals. Here are some highlights:

Cherry Blossom Season

One of the most anticipated events of the year in Korea is the blooming of the cherry blossoms. Typically, this occurs in early April, and it’s a sight not to be missed. There are plenty of places in Korea where you can see cherry blossoms, such as Yeouido Park in Seoul, the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival, and the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Marathon.

Spring is also a season of festivals in Korea, such as the Seoul Lantern Festival, Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival, and the Hi Seoul Festival. These events offer a unique opportunity to experience Korea’s culture and traditions.

2. Summer (June – August)

Summer in Korea is hot and humid, but it’s also a season of fun, with plenty of outdoor activities and events. Here’s what you can expect:

Korea has many beautiful beaches to enjoy during the summer, such as Haeundae Beach in Busan, Gyeongpo Beach in Gangneung, and Naksan Beach in Yangyang. These beaches offer the perfect escape from the heat and a chance to enjoy water sports.

Summer is also a season of festivals, such as the Boryeong Mud Festival, Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, and Busan International Film Festival. These events are popular with locals and tourists alike and offer a chance to enjoy live music, movies, and cultural activities.

3. Fall (September – November)

Fall in Korea is known for its mild temperatures, stunning autumn foliage, and delicious food. Here are some highlights:

Autumn Foliage

If you’re a fan of fall foliage, then Korea is the perfect place to visit. You can enjoy the beautiful colors of autumn at places like Naejangsan National Park, Seoraksan National Park, and Gyeongju Bulguksa Temple.

Fall is also a season of delicious food in Korea, such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and persimmons. You can also enjoy traditional Korean dishes like dakgalbi, pajeon, and samgyetang.

Winter in Korea can be cold, but it’s also a season of festive cheer and winter sports. Here’s what you can expect:

Skiing and Snowboarding

Korea has plenty of ski resorts that offer a chance to enjoy skiing and snowboarding, such as Yongpyong Ski Resort, Alpensia Ski Resort, and Phoenix Park Ski Resort.

Essential Travel Tips

If you’re planning to visit Korea for less than 90 days, you don’t need a visa if you’re from one of the 119 countries that have a visa waiver agreement with Korea. Otherwise, you need to apply for a tourist visa at the Korean embassy or consulate in your country.

The official currency of Korea is the Korean won (KRW). You can exchange your foreign currency at banks, exchange booths, and airports. Credit cards are widely accepted, especially in larger cities, but it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller transactions and emergencies.

The official language of Korea is Korean, but many Koreans speak English, especially in tourist areas. However, learning a few basic Korean phrases can go a long way in making your trip more enjoyable and immersive.

Transportation:

Korea has an excellent public transportation system, including buses, subways, and trains, that is efficient, clean, and safe. Taxis are also widely available, but they can be more expensive than public transportation. If you’re planning to travel outside of Seoul, renting a car or hiring a private driver can be a convenient option.

Accommodation:

Korea has a wide range of accommodation options, from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels. It’s always a good idea to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak season, to avoid disappointment and ensure the best prices.

Korean cuisine is famous for its bold flavors, colorful presentation, and health benefits. Some must-try dishes include bibimbap, bulgogi, kimchi, and Korean barbecue. You can find Korean food in restaurants, food stalls, and markets throughout the country, and it’s usually affordable and delicious.

Conclusion:

Korea is a fantastic destination that offers something for everyone, regardless of the season. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, nature, or food, Korea has it all. By choosing the best time to visit Korea based on your preferences and interests, as well as following these essential travel tips , you can make the most of your South Korea trip and create unforgettable memories.

As well as being the best time of year for South Korea’s cherry blossom, many exciting festivals take place between March and May. In March, Jeju Fire Festival celebrates the arrival of Spring. Farmers on Jeju Island set their pastures alight to kill old grass and eliminate pests before cattle and horses start grazing again. Daljip, or moon houses, are also burned to help fulfil villagers’ prayers for good fortune. The fascinating Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival occurs between the end of April and early May. During this time, an incredible natural phenomenon allows festival-goers to walk straight through the middle of the parted Jindo Sea.

Where to Stay in South Korea

best season to visit seoul korea

What season to avoid?

Monsoon season.

In July, rainy season means that the whole of South Korea feels uncomfortably damp and muggy. August brings scorching temperatures alongside torrential rains. It’s also the holiday season for most Korean schools and universities, meaning it can get extremely crowded. South Korea experiences one to three typhoons per year, with most of them passing over the country in August, so this time of year is best avoided.

Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok

South Korea’s lunar new year, Seollal, is celebrated at some point in either January or February. Chuseok, a Korean harvest festival, falls between September and October. During both festivals, many South Koreans go home to see their families, making travelling around the country quite difficult. Many attractions are also closed during these times, so Seoul becomes quite quiet. As both celebrations depend on the lunar calendar, their dates change slightly each year. It’s a good idea to check whether your planned travel dates coincide with either festival before you book your trip.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit South Korea is between March and May if you want to see the vibrant pink of the cherry blossoms in bloom. If you want to see the landscapes come alive as the leaves change in the cooler weathers, then we’d recommend visiting between September and November. Temperatures during these times are generally pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities.

June, July and August offer the best conditions for hiking, but the weather is hot and humid away from the mountains.

Winters in South Korea are bitterly cold, so we wouldn’t recommend visiting in December, January or February.

It’s important to take local holidays into account when planning your trip. The Korean New Year is the first day of the lunar month, and Chuseok is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. During these times, many residents head to their rural hometowns to celebrate and many businesses are closed.

Month-by-month guide for travelling in South Korea

Pagoda in the winter

Visiting South Korea in January

South Korea typically sees its highest amount of snowfall this month. Tourist sites are less crowded, but it’s too cold to recommend as a good time to visit.

Seoul in the winter

Visiting South Korea in February

Attractions remain less crowded, but snow is still possible in the north until the end of the month. The Korean New Year generally falls in January or February, so it’s best to avoid that time. The temperatures are still too cold to recommend visiting.

Events & Festivals

  • Jeju Fire Festival (late February, early March): A giant bonfire, fireworks and K-Pop concerts are held on Jeju Island to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Bukchon hanok village

Visiting South Korea in March

Temperatures begin to increase during March, but overall, it’s still chilly. Depending on the weather, the cherry blossoms may begin to bloom near the end of the month.

Gamcheon culture village

Visiting South Korea in April

This is one of the best times to visit, when the cherry blossoms are likely to be in full bloom. However, the most popular destinations are busy. Additionally, the yellow dust from the Gobi Desert often covers South Korea at this time — people with allergies may want to avoid visiting in April.

Anapji pond

Visiting South Korea in May

This month features warm, pleasant temperatures and plenty of sun. It’s an excellent time to try outdoor activities, such as climbing Mount Hallasan on Jeju Island. Do be aware, however, that the cherry blossom bloom will be completely over by May.

  • Yeon Deung Hoe Lotus Lantern Festival in Seoul (beginning of May): Entertainment, a parade and a procession of lanterns light up the Seoul streets.

Busan Tower

Visiting South Korea in June

Crowds tend to die down in June, and popular attractions become less crowded. The caveat is that the upcoming monsoon season means rain is very common during this time of year.

Mount Hallasan descent

Visiting South Korea in July

July is peak monsoon season, so we don’t recommend visiting then. Additionally, the temperatures are very high with lots of humidity. This is one of the worst months to visit.

Haeundae beach

Visiting South Korea in August

August is very hot and sunny, making it the best time to visit the beaches. However, restaurants, shops and popular sites will be crowded. South Korean schools are on break and there is a surge in domestic travel.

Autumn mountains in Korea

Visiting South Korea in September

The crowds dwindle a little as the schools head back into session. The weather is still very hot, and South Korea can sometimes be hit by typhoons, which deliver rainfall for a couple of days at a time. Chuseok often falls this time of year, so it’s best to avoid that week.

Pagoda in autumn

Visiting South Korea in October

This is one of the best months to visit — the weather is comfortably warm, making it pleasant for outdoor activities. Toward the end of the month, mountain ranges in the north start to show signs of autumnal hues as the leaves begin to change.

  • Busan Fireworks Festival (October): Fireworks light up the sky and a laser light show dances among the stars at Gwangalli Beach.

Pagoda in the autumn

Visiting South Korea in November

Temperatures this month are generally pleasant, though they start to get chilly toward the end of the month. It’s the best time to see the bright autumn leaves, particularly at the beginning and middle of the month.

  • Seoul Lantern Festival (November): Large, bright lanterns are set in the Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul.

Gyeongbokgung in the snow

Visiting South Korea in December

We wouldn’t recommend December for a visit, as the temperatures can be quite cold. The weather isn’t as icy as January, but Seoul in particular can be frigid later in the month.

  • Seongsan Sunrise Festival (New Year’s Eve): Concerts, fireworks, campfires and other festivities kick off the celebration as festivalgoers await the first sunrise of the New Year on Jeju Island.

N.Korea again sends trash balloons to South: Seoul military

North Korea on Saturday sent a new round of trash-laden balloons towards the South, Seoul's military said, after anti-Pyongyang activists in the South said they had lofted balloons with leaflets against leader Kim Jong Un across the border.

The announcement came hours after Seoul's military said it was on alert for a new filthy salvo arriving from North Korea, as the tit-for-tat balloon blitz revved up once again.

"North Korea is again floating (suspected) balloons carrying trash towards the South," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, advising the public to report any balloons to authorities and refrain from touching them.

The Seoul city government, as well as officials in Gyeonggi province, also sent a similar text alert to residents on Saturday, warning about the balloons.

North Korea sent hundreds of balloons in two waves last week with bags of trash into the South, describing them as retaliation for anti-Pyongyang propaganda balloons sent the other way.

Pyongyang said it would stop last Sunday but days later, a South Korean group called "Fighters for Free North Korea" said it had sent 10 balloons with thumb drives containing K-pop music and 200,000 leaflets condemning Kim's rule.

Another group, comprising North Korean defectors, also said it had sent 10 balloons on Friday with 100 radios, 200,000 anti-Pyongyang leaflets, and thumb drives containing a speech by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Jang Se-yul, the leader of the second group, told AFP on Saturday that his organisation would not stop its balloon campaign, "whether Kim Jong Un sends trash-carrying balloons again or not".

Last year, South Korea's Constitutional Court struck down a 2020 law that criminalised the sending of anti-Pyongyang propaganda, calling it an undue limitation on free speech.

Experts say there are now no legal grounds for the government to stop activists from sending balloons into North Korea.

South Korea's unification ministry said Saturday that the issue is "being approached in consideration" of last year's court ruling.

Kim's powerful sister Kim Yo Jong mocked South Korea for complaining about the balloons last week, saying North Koreans were simply exercising their freedom of expression.

- 'Crash Landing on You' -

Last week, the North Korean balloons landed in a number of locations in the South, and were found to be carrying garbage such as cigarette butts, cardboard scrap and waste batteries.

In response, South Korea completely suspended a 2018 military deal with the North, which was meant to reduce tensions between the neighbours.

Authorities in Seoul have condemned the North's balloons as a "low-class" act and threatened countermeasures that it said Pyongyang would find "unendurable".

Activists in South Korea have long sent balloons northwards, filled with anti-Pyongyang propaganda, cash, rice, and Korean TV series on thumb drives.

These have always infuriated North Korea, whose government is extremely sensitive about its people gaining access to South Korean pop culture.

Kuensaem, another South Korean activist group, told AFP that it threw 500 plastic bottles into the sea on Friday near the border with North Korea.

The bottles were filled with rice, cash and a USB drive with a South Korean TV series "Crash Landing on You" -- which features a romance between a wealthy South Korean heiress and a North Korean army officer.

The group has been sending such materials to the North twice a month since 2015.

"We were just doing what we've been doing for a long time to help North Koreans who are starving," the group's leader Park Jung-oh told AFP Saturday.

Tensions over the duelling propaganda have boiled over in dramatic fashion in the past.

In 2020, blaming the anti-North leaflets, Pyongyang unilaterally cut off all official military and political communication links with Seoul and blew up a disused inter-Korean liaison office on its side of the border.

Best places in the world to see cherry blossoms

A fter a long gray winter, there are few things that can lift my mood like seeing the first pink cherry blossoms of spring filling the sky with their delicate blooms.

I'm especially lucky — some of the best buds on the East Coast bloom near me at Branch Brook Park in Newark (yes, that Newark ). The 5,000 trees create a cotton candy skyline for a week in early April that banishes all thoughts of bleak winter days.

I'm not the only one who feels the cherry blossoms' positive mood pull. The Japanese equate sakura , cherry blossoms, with new beginnings, and the act of hanami , or cherry blossom viewing, in early spring is met with both reverence and celebration in Japan, with multiple generations spending days and evenings at parties, picnics and festivals lauding this fresh new start.

Although Japan, especially Tokyo, is equated with hanami celebrations, you can find sakura in destinations around the globe. It's the perfect excuse to plan spring travel — a cherry blossom pilgrimage offers not just the visual spectacle of the blooms and their aftermath of soft silky petals covering the ground like fragrant snow, but a chance to immerse yourself in the culture of each destination, too.

Related: The best places to see cherry blossoms around the US this spring

Of course, trees can be temperamental depending on the weather, so build a bit of time buffer into your travels if you're planning a trip specifically around seeing the delicate pink and cream blooms and their flower fireworks.

From Amsterdam to Japan, here's where to immerse yourself in spring's sakura.

If you're considering traveling to see spring's cherry blossom bloom, chances are you have Tokyo in your sights already, since sakura are synonymous with this city, where the tradition of hanami dates back 1,200 years. The entire city celebrates the blooms with picnics and events, special sakura-themed menus, and hanami bento and snack spots near viewing areas.

There are multiple locations around Tokyo to view the pink sakura wave. Among the most prominent is Ueno Park, which transforms into a pink wonderland with 1,000 flowering trees that bring millions of visitors to bask in their rosy glow. In the evenings, the park is illuminated for a glowing nighttime visit. Another top stop is Chidorigafuchi Park, where the Imperial Palace is located, which is especially memorable for its nearly half-mile tunnel of blooms plus a sakura-lined canal that you can boat through.

According to Japan's cherry blossom forecast , Tokyo's blooms are predicted to start March 23 and be at full flower on March 30. (Once again, these dates can wiggle a bit depending on Mother Nature.)

Where to stay: Staying near major transportation hubs will make it easy to see sakura around the city (and not be stuck in the crowds at the most popular spots). The Conrad Tokyo occupies the top floors of the Shiodome skyscraper, with stellar views of Tokyo Bay, and is near several train stations. It's also next to Hama-rikyu Gardens, a hidden gem for peaceful sakura viewing. During peak hanami, the last week in March, rooms start at $818 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Kyoto, Japan

It's not just Tokyo where the sakura are revered in Japan. Kyoto is also world-renowned for its surge of cherry blossoms that bloom just in time for spring and romantically outline the tranquil pathways of its many parks. Known as the cultural heart of Japan, and serving as the central preservation hub for Japan's vibrant culture and history, seeing the sakura among its 2,000 temples and shrines — including Nijo Castle and Toji Temple — truly imbues the ancient practice with a sense of history.

One particularly special spot is Philosopher's Path, which weaves through cherry tree-lined canals between the Ginkakuji and Nanzenji temples. It's a particularly serene setting for hanami. For evening viewing, Maruyama-Koen Park is especially popular for its illuminated branches and picnic areas under the bowers.

According to the Japan Meteorological Corporation, peak sakura viewing in Kyoto will start with the first blooms on March 23 and peak on March 31. The city sponsors multiple events, including night viewings.

Where to stay: The Park Hyatt Kyoto has a prime location in the Higashiyama ward and combines modern luxury with ancient pagoda guesthouse-style accommodations. (TPG staffers also love its French-inspired teppanyaki dining at Yasaka and its convivial bar, Kohaku, where craft cocktails are served with classic Kyoto views). Rates during hanami start at $1,273 or 35,000-45,000 World of Hyatt points per night, making it a great option for World of Hyatt loyalists.

Seoul, South Korea

The cherry blossom spectacle at Yeouido Hangang Park in Seoul is a must-see, and it doesn't have the same influx of foreign travelers that you'll find in Tokyo, so you can avoid some of the flower-viewing crush that's become part of the experience there. Some of the top viewing spots are Yeouido Park and Gyeongbokgung Palace, both of which have stunning views of clouds of blooms.

The Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the biggest viewing events in South Korea. It takes place in early April and features parades and performances, including a magical night lantern parade. Although it's not in Seoul, it's possible to do a one-day excursion with Klook , where a bus will pick you up in the morning, take you to the festival and then bring you back in the evening.

Where to stay: The stylish Andaz Seoul Gangnam is centrally located, making it easy to walk to most of Seoul's main attractions; plus, there's direct access to Apgujeong station to reach the cherry blossom sites. Expect design details like bojagi, a traditional Korean cloth used to create textile art. The hotel has an array of hot tubs, a sauna and a lap pool. The property is a Category 5 World of Hyatt property; rooms start at $281 or 20,000 Hyatt points per night during the first week of April.

Related: A confluence of innovation and honored traditions: South Korea 2024

I am solidly in the camp that thinks Paris is always a good idea, especially in late March and the beginning of April when cerisiers (cherry trees) paint the town pink.

You'll find pockets of the pink flowers all around the city. Some top spots include near the Louvre at the Jardin du Palais-Royal, where you'll also spot spring daffodils filling the flower beds. You can also catch the pink wave along the Champ de Mars leading to the Eiffel Tower and in the Trocadero Gardens (the ultimate Instagram selfie with the tower and the pink petals). One of my favorite cherry blossom spots in Paris — Square Jean XXIII, next to Notre Dame — is currently closed, but it should be open for the 2025 flower season, if you're planning a trip for next year.

Unlike other destinations where you'll find cherry blossom events, there are no organized festivals in the City of Light. Do like the Parisians do, and plan a picnic under the flowering bowers.

Where to stay: The Hotel du Louvre, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, is tucked in between the Louvre and the Jardin du Palais-Royal, so you'll have cherry blossom views no matter which way you turn when you walk out the door. For a double room in mid-April, the member rate with breakfast starts at $565 per night. This is a Hyatt Category 7 property, with point redemptions available for mid-April starting at 30,000 points per night.

Although this might not be the biggest display in Europe, the cherry blossom season in Amsterdam has something that no other city can claim: a distinctly feminist feel. At Kersenbloesempark (Cherry Blossom Park) in Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) in Amstelveen , a suburb of Amsterdam located 5 miles south of downtown, the park's 400 trees, a gift from the Japanese Women's Club, are all named after women, with half in Dutch and half in Japanese.

There are no exact dates for the blooms, but expect about a two-week bloom sometime in late March or early April. Note that picnicking is only allowed during weekdays, and there are no restrooms in the gardens (check out the Amstelveen website for nearby restaurants).

Where to stay: From the centrally located Kimpton DeWitt Amsterdam , it's easy to both explore Amsterdam and to hop on tram line 5 to reach Amstelveen (about a 25-minute ride). IHG member rates for the hotel start at $231 a night in early April, with reward night stays starting at 31,000 IHG points. And as part of Kimpton's Plant Pals program, the hotel will deliver a plant, which has a name and name tag, to your room.

Jerte Valley, Spain

Sure, it's impressive to see hundreds of cherry blossom trees together. And when you view thousands in one place, it's quite a sight. But how about millions of trees? That's what awaits in the Jerte Valley in the Extremadura region of Spain (about three hours west of Madrid), where more than 2 million cherry trees create a sea of petals in late March and early April.

During an extended celebration that runs from late March all the way into May, you'll find everything from special marketplaces to medieval fairs, plus music, culture and cuisine events centered around the blooms. Unlike the ornamental varieties of Japanese cherry trees, the ones here produce prized fruit. If you return in May or June, you can even join the cherry harvest.

Where to stay: The Jerte Valley enjoys a rural setting, and there are no opportunities for points redemptions here. However, there are some authentic and welcoming places to spend the night, including Hospederia Valle del Jerte, which has a historic exterior but modern rooms. There's an outdoor pool, a full breakfast and fantastic views of the valley, all for around $110 per night.

Washington, DC

As a former resident of the nation's capital, I can attest that Washington's nearly 4,000 Yoshino cherry blossom trees transform the serious, buttoned-up city into a veritable pink carnival during the short lifespan of the blooms.

In addition to the festival held March 20 to April 14, with everything from a parade to a kite festival to a "Petalpalooza," the Tidal Basin, where the majority of cherry blossoms are located, turns into a round-the-clock picnic scene, with thousands of people lying in the soft fallen petals, enjoying the spring weather.

Note that if you can't visit during the main peak bloom period, another variety of cherry blossom, the Kwanzan, usually blooms two weeks later in other parts of the city. And if you want to avoid the crowds, head to the National Arboretum for a much more relaxed viewing experience.

Where to stay: Hilton fans will want to head to the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC, which occupies the Old Post Office building. It's grand and very ornate, with a multifloor atrium and even a 19-foot cherry blossom tree in the lobby, where a Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea is served. Special Cherry Blossom packages include a two-night stay, exclusive seating for the tea and special access to hanami locations around DC. Expect rates around $580 or 110,000 Hilton Honors points per night during the peak of bloom season.

Macon, Georgia

Here's a U.S. spot for hanami that may come as a surprise: Macon, Georgia. The Yoshino trees here were mistaken for the more popular dogwood when they were originally planted in 1949, according to city officials. Today, though, the annual bloom is celebrated in big style. For 10 days — this year, the bloom is predicted from March 15 to 24 — the entire city turns pink as more than 350,000 cherry trees are in full bloom (by comparison, Washington has 3,800).

This year a new event, The Pink Provisions Party on Poplar, on March 15, will feature local restaurants and bars presenting all of their signature creations for the celebration. Think cherry ice cream, pink doughnuts, foamy fuchsia cocktails, a cherry blossom pilsner from Ocmulgee Brewpub and even a cherry blossom coffee blend from Z Beans.

A live "Bloom Cam" feed allows those who can't make it to watch the cherry trees as they announce the arrival of spring.

Where to stay: Use your Marriott points to stay at Hotel Forty Five, Macon, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel . The new boutique 95-room hotel is right in the middle of all the pink party happenings, and you can check it out from the Hightales Rooftop Bar. Double room rates start at $216 or 39,000 Marriott Bonvoy points a night during cherry blossom season.

Vancouver, British Columbia

With more than 40,000 cherry trees, many of which came directly from Japan, Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Park becomes a veritable puff of pink in the spring.

With so many trees comprising multiple varieties, the blooming period spreads over nearly two months, so if you're visiting in March or April, you will likely be able to spot some petals on the trees.

The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from March 29 to April 25 (almost a full month), with a mix of arts and culture events, including a Japanese Sakura Days Fair, a Haiku Festival and a Blossoms After Dark event for illuminated evening viewing.

Where to stay: Keep your stay green with a visit to the Fairmont Waterfront , whose organic rooftop garden grows everything from vegetables to fruit trees, not to mention beehives (you can try the honey at their "pollinator" dinner.) Room rates start at $299 a night in early April (Accor Live Limitless members receive 5% off the lowest rate).

Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria boasts the mildest year-round climate in Canada, and as a result it's a haven for spring florals. Starting at the end of February and going until May, the city offers an incredibly extended, and impressive, cherry blossom bloom.

One of the most popular places to see the tapestry of pink hues is along the aptly named View Street in the heart of Downtown Victoria. It's usually the first area to explode in a sea of pink flowers, so this is a stop for early birds.

Although there's no formal festival, Victoria does have an interactive cherry blossom map , so you can find the blooms around the city whenever you visit in the spring.

Where to stay: The Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour is a TPG favorite, with availability starting at $225 or 36,000 Marriott Bonvoy points a night in March. There are cherry blossoms around the harbor area for easy viewing, and the hotel has a pool for post-hanami relaxation.

North Korea flies trash-carrying balloons to South Korea in another retaliation against leafletting

Hyung-Jin Kim

Associated Press

SEOUL – North Korea flew hundreds of trash-carrying balloons to South Korea again in its third such campaign since late May, the South’s military said, just days after South Korean activists floated their own balloons to scatter propaganda leaflets in the North.

North Korea has so far sent more than 1,000 balloons to drop tons of trash and manure in the South in retaliation against South Korean civilian leafletting campaigns, adding to tensions between the war-divided rivals amid a diplomatic stalemate over the North’s nuclear ambitions.

In response, South Korea suspended a 2018 tension-easing agreement with North Korea. The move allows the South to restart live-fire military exercises and anti-North Korean propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts in border areas, actions that are certain to anger North Korea and prompt it to take its own retaliatory military steps.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the North launching around 330 balloons toward the South since Saturday night and about 80 were found in South Korean territory as of Sunday morning. The military said winds were blowing eastward on Saturday night, which possibly caused many balloons to float away from South Korean territory.

The South's military said the balloons that did land dropped trash, including plastic and paper waste, but no hazardous substances were discovered.

The military, which has mobilized chemical rapid response and explosive clearance units to retrieve the North Korean balloons and materials, alerted the public to beware of falling objects and not to touch balloons found on the ground but report them to police or military authorities.

Saturday’s balloon launches by North Korea were the third of their kind since May 28. In North Korea’s previous two rounds of balloon activities, South Korean authorities discovered about 1,000 balloons that were tied to vinyl bags containing manure, cigarette butts, scraps of cloth, waste batteries and waste papers. Some were popped and scattered on roads, residential areas and schools. No highly dangerous materials were found and no major damage has been reported.

The North’s vice defense minister, Kim Kang Il, later said his country would stop the balloon campaign but threatened to resume it if South Korean activists sent leaflets again.

In defiance of the warning, a South Korean civilian group led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak, said it launched 10 balloons from a border town on Thursday carrying 200,000 anti-North Korean leaflets, USB sticks with K-pop songs and South Korean dramas, and $1 U.S. bills. South Korean media reported another activist group also flew balloons with 200,000 propaganda leaflets toward North Korea on Friday.

South Korean officials called the North Korean trash balloon launches and other recent provocations as “absurd, irrational” and vowed strong retaliation.

North Korea is extremely sensitive to South Korean civilian leafletting campaigns and front-line propaganda broadcasts as it forbids access to foreign news for most of its 26 million people. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is a third generation of his family to rule North Korea with an iron fist since 1948.

Experts say North Korea’s balloon campaign is also meant to cause a divide in South Korea over its conservative government’s tough approach on North Korea.

Liberal lawmakers, some civic groups and front-line residents in South Korea have called on the government to urge leafleting activists to stop flying balloons to avoid unnecessary clashes with North Korea. But government officials haven’t made such an appeal in line with last year’s constitutional court ruling that struck down a law criminalizing an anti-North Korea leafletting as a violation of free speech.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Bryce Harper is a big fan of Major League Baseball’s London Series.

The Phillies star raved about the opportunity when speaking with the media before Saturday’s game against the Mets across the pond .

“We’re excited as a team to be over here and play in front of different fans,” Harper told reporters. “Obviously they love their football over here and being able to go into a different country and play in front of a new fanbase is going to be a really fun time for us, and fun time for them.”

This weekend’s two-game series is the league’s third in London, following clashes between the Yankees and Red Sox in 2019, and Cubs and Cardinals in 2023.

Bryce Harper is enjoying his London experience thus far.

MLB is scheduled to return in 2026 as well, but Harper said it can go even further.

“I wish that Major League Baseball would bring four teams over here, make it a round-robin and stay for a week and a half or two weeks, just so UK baseball fans can rally around it,” Harper said. “It’s so in and out and so quick, it would be fun to rove across the country a bit, take the trains into different places and see all that. I think it would be a lot of fun.”

Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo echoed Harper’s sentiment calling for a longer stay overseas.

“It’s a great idea,” he said . “Once you get acclimated to the time change, you might as well spend a couple of weeks over here and play in some different cities and go ahead and make a round-robin out of it. That would be fantastic.

“I think the biggest part is that initial 24 hours and once you get past that then you’re sitting in a lot better space physically and mentally. So I’d love to see that, I think it would be good for the game and I think it would grow in a sportive way. So I think it’s a great idea.”

London is the last of four international destinations for MLB this season following stops in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in Spring Training and regular-season games in Seoul, South Korea and Mexico City.

The Mets and Phillies will conclude the London Series at 10:10 a.m. ET on Sunday.
