About Krabi and the Four Islands

Island hopping in Krabi is super fun. One of the best ways to get involved in this adventure is to book yourself onto a tour of the four nearby islands just off the coast — arguably one of the popular tours in the area.

Named Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tub, and Koh Mor, these four little land masses are pieces of paradise, boasting pristine beaches, snorkelling spots galore and all the beautiful scenery you’d expect.

We were staying in Railay Beach , one of the most famous beaches in Thailand, but personally we found that the beaches of Four Islands were considerably prettier than Railay Beach.

The sand is whiter, the water is clearer and the surrounding nature is wilder, more untouched. They’re gorgeous islands, just waiting to be discovered!

Four Islands Tour Overview

There are lots of companies that offer the chance to embark on the famed Krabi Four Islands tour . Most of these tours offer the same sorts of things, but sometimes in different orders and in slight variations.

All tours usually include pick-up and drop-off from your hotel, lunch, drinks on the boat and snorkelling equipment.

They might visit them in different orders, but on any four islands tour in Krabi, you’ll be guaranteed stops at the following spots in the Krabi Archipelago.

This island, known for its stunning beaches and super clear water, lies just off the coast of Krabi. It’s actually the largest of the four islands and is a super dreamy spot to drop anchor and explore for a while.

The white sand beaches lapped by turquoise seas are the main draw here, but you can’t discount the vibrant coral reef teeming with life just offshore — don’t forget your snorkelling gear!

You won’t get high-end bars or development here, it’s just a rustic place to kick back and enjoy the scenery.

Koh Tub & Koh Mor

The twin islands of Koh Tub (also Koh Tup – or Tup Island and Tub Island in English) and Koh Mor are two tiny slivers of land linked by a sandbar.

Called Talay Waek, this cool sandbar only reveals itself properly at low tide and can actually be walked across by visitors on the four islands tour.

Koh Tub itself is surrounded by typically sparkling waters that brim with tropical fish and colourful corals, attracting tourists from around the world; Koh Mor is equally as stunning, but feels even more remote than its neighbour.

Chicken Island

Chicken Island (Koh Kai in Thai) may seem like a weird name, but it’s actually because this island boasts a cool rock formation shaped like a chicken.

Lying just south of Koh Poda, it is also connected by a sandbar to Koh Mor and Koh Tub, making these three islands almost like one connected landmass.

When the tide is low, you can walk the Y-shaped sandbar between all three. It’s a unique stop-off on the tour for this reason, but also it’s a chance to snap pics of the rock formation (obviously).

Koh Kai also has a few facilities, like toilets and a beach bar or two, so you can grab a snack to eat if you’re feeling peckish.

The Other Side of Chicken Island (and Koh Poda)

On the other side of Chicken Island, opposite to the shore where the sandbar connects, is where you’ll find the eponymous rock formation itself jutting out of the limestone cliffs.

You can also see smaller islets that dot the sea here, like Koh Khom, as well as some colourful marine life offshore.

Likewise, the other side of Koh Poda is a wilder, less crowded portion of the island known for its not-so-hidden but still not very busy Secret Beach.

Some tours will take you to these lesser-visited sides of each island.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

Part of Railay peninsula, right on the southern tip opposite Koh Rang Nok, lies Phra Nang cave beach. This scenic spot is a popular place for the four island tour to end.

It’s not just picturesque: The cave is actually home to a shrine dedicated to the deity Phra Nang, goddess of fertility, which is decorated with stone phalluses of different shapes and sizes.

Since there is now a line of buoys to prevent boats from docking on Phra Nang Cave Beach, I don’t think any of the tours stop at this beach. They just cruise past it to show you the cool rock formations.

The 7 Island Tour  Krabi

As I mentioned earlier, every Krabi four island tour package varies from the next one, but they all go to the same places.

If you want to do something different, there’s actually a seven islands tour , which obviously includes stops at three extra islands, plus a BBQ dinner at sunset, which is pretty cool.

Beyond the classic Koh Poda, Koh Kai, Koh Tub and Koh Mor, the Seven Islands tour also includes stops at Koh Yawasam, Koh Tan Ming and Koe Raeng.

Here you’ll find slightly less people, as most travellers stick to the four islands tour, which will give you the opportunity to enjoy beautiful beaches and snorkelling spots all to yourself.

It’s a great option if you want an all-day activity. The four island boat tours usually only take up half a day, but if you’re ready to spend a whole day at sea, this is the tour for you!

Krabi: 4 Islands Tour by Longtail Boat

This is the classic four island tour takes you to the four main islands by longtail boat. You’ll also stop off at the Phra Nang cave beach at Railay.

It’s a well organised tour that includes a Thai buffet lunch thrown in for the price. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable, plus you get a good amount of time at each location.

Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch

The Phi Phi Islands may be quite far away, but you can get there thanks to a tour by a zippy speedboat.

This tour may start early (and it’s a long day), but it begins with a trip to Phi Phi for an incredible sunrise, and then whisks you to the famous four islands — via Maya Bay (famous as the location of The Beach ).

It’s pricier than just doing a four islands tour, but that’s because you’re basically getting two trips in the same tour! A day trip to Phi Phi , and your classic 4 Islands tour in Krabi.

It’s a great option for those who have a tight Thailand itinerary , so that you can see more in less time. It also includes lunch in Phi Phi Don, plus pick-up and drop-off from your Krabi hotel.

Krabi: 4 Islands Day Trip by Speedboat Including Lunch Box

While many of the tours of Krabi’s four islands take place on longtail boats, this tour one speeds things up by allowing you to jump aboard a speedboat.

I included this tour as I wanted to include a speedboat option, but to be entirely honest, I would suggest a long-tail boat tour over a speedboat one.

The four islands aren’t far from Railay Beach, so even with a long-tail boat, it won’t take long to reach them. Plus, you’ll have a more traditional Thai experience.

But if you have your heart set on a speedboat, then this tour is the best choice. You’ll travel in style to the four islands, and it also includes lunch on the beach.

Railay: 4 Islands Sunset & Night Snorkel Boat Tour

This option really adds value to the four island tour.

Beyond the classic four islands, this tour also includes Railay Beach, specifically Ao Nang, with its amazing diving spots to glimpse an array of underwater tropical life.

You’ll get to see a sunset and even do a spot of night snorkelling, to see bioluminescent plankton. An unforgettable experience.

Krabi: Private Long Tail Boat to the 4 Islands

If you want to keep things private, this private long-tail boat is a great option. Since I was travelling to Railay Beach with my family we opted for a private 4 Islands tour, and we couldn’t have made a better choice.

Having a private boat will give you more flexibility, allowing you to change the order of your stops from the classic tour, so as to visit each stop while the crowds are somewhere else.

Plus you’ll be able to spread out on the boat, and not be squished next to strangers. Like all the tours, it includes pick-up and drop-off, lunch and drinks.

Krabi: Private 4 Islands & Sunset Dinner Luxury Speedboat

If a private tour isn’t enough, and you really want to splurge, this is the tour for you. You’ll do all the usual four islands stops, but on a luxury speedboat all to yourself.

Plus, add to it dinner with sunset over the ocean, and you have a magical travel bucket list experience ready. It’s perfect for special occasions or groups of friends who can split the cost.

Our experience doing a 4 islands tour in Krabi

I was in Thailand with my parents and little sister, so we decided to opt for a private tour. It was the best decision we could have made, as it gave us more privacy and flexibility.

We didn’t book it until we arrived in Railay Beach, from one of the many tourist stands located on the main road of Railay Beach.

This was a bit risky, since we were there over New Years, and many of the boats were already booked out. However, since we were there for a week we had quite a lot of flexibility on dates.

If you’re not spending long in Krabi, it might be better if you book your 4 islands tour online beforehand. That way you don’t risk missing out, plus you’ll be able to see reviews from other travellers.

Our four islands tour was super smooth and enjoyable. We were picked up from Railay East Pier, and taken directly to the beautiful four islands.

The crystal clear water of Koh Poda in Krabi, Thailand

We started with a long stop in Koh Poda, at a lovely white sandy beach with crystal clear water, before making our way to a snorkelling stop close to the sandbar of Koh Tub and Koh Mor.

In theory there is an entrance fee to the national park of the islands of Krabi, but our skipper was cheeky and told us that if we just snorkelled in the middle of the sea, without going to shore, we wouldn’t have to pay it.

We then sailed past Chicken Island, admiring the rock formations that give it its name. My favourite stop was actually the beach we visited on Koh Kai, as it had crystal clear water and we had it all to ourselves.

Our final stop was once again Koh Poda (or Poda Island), but on the back side in a little cove with only a couple other boats.

Overall it was a very enjoyable day, and one of the highlights of our Thailand itinerary . If you’re planning a Krabi itinerary, I highly suggest adding a four islands tour to it.

Where to stay for your Krabi Four Islands tour

In my opinion, the best place to stay in Krabi is Railay Beach, and more so if you plan to do the four islands tour. Railay Beach is a super chilled town, with one main street, lots of bars, restaurants and a laid-back vibe.

Plus, most of the tours that set off from Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao will do a stop in Railay Beach to pick up other travellers, so you get to sleep more and start later if you stay in Railay Beach!

Here are the best places to stay in Railay Beach for every budget.

Budget: Railay Viewpoint Resort   – This budget option is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, and it’s a great for those who want spacious rooms and a pool with view for an affordable price.

Click here to book your stay at Railay Viewpoint Resort!

Mid-range: Railay Princess Resort & Spa   – This is where we stayed for a week and really enjoyed it. The property is clean, the rooms spacious, it offers a lovely breakfast buffet, has a great pool with view and is in an easy position close to East Railay Pier and the main street.

Luxury: Rayavadee   – If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to do so! Located in Phra Nang Beach (the only hotel there) this luxury property offers gorgeous private villas nestled in nature.

What to pack for your 4 Island tour in Krabi

For a full breakdown of what you should pack for Thailand, check out my Thailand packing list . Here I just included a few essentials that you will need for your four islands boat trip.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Fast drying towel – There’s a lot of swimming and lounging on beaches involved in these boat tours, so make sure to have one of these! I love these because they dry quickly and they don’t take up much space.

Power bank – You don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a gorgeous photo of the crystal clear water of Koh Poda!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry from any rogue water splashes during your boat trip.

Final thoughts on doing a 4 Islands tour Krabi

There you have it, the ultimate guide to doing a Krabi four islands tour! Have you been to Krabi before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

I’ve been to Thailand four times, and yet this was my first time visiting Krabi. I can confidently say it was one of my favourite places in Thailand, especially Railay Beach and its surroundings.

We spent a week in Railay Beach, and loved its chilled and laid-back atmosphere. Plus, the fact that from here you can go island hopping to gorgeous beaches is a great addition!

On previous trips to Thailand I visited other pristine beaches like Koh Lipe , the Surin Islands , Phi Phi Islands and Similan Islands , but I find that the four islands in Krabi beat them all.

They might not be as famous for scuba diving , but they’re still pretty beautiful, and the fact that they’re so close to shore (30 minutes by long-tail boat compared to the 2-hour speedboat required to get to the Similan Islands), makes them all the more appealing.

I hope you found this guide on the best four island tours in Krabi useful, and that it helps you choose the perfect tour for you! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below.

Your Perfect Guide to 4 Island Tour in Krabi

  • December 27, 2022

Where is Krabi?

Krabi is in Southern Thailand, on the western coast,a popular tourist destination due to its stunningly beautiful scenery and excellent activities, including snorkelling, rock climbing, and kayaking. It is known for its calm weather during the high season (between Novemebr and April), making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sun and, most importantly, take an island boat tour.

Which islands are normally included in a krabi 4 Island Tour?

Most Krabi four-island tours includes Koh Poda, Koh Gai (also known as Chicken Island), Ta Ming, and Si Island. In addition, some tours may include a trip to Tup Island, lifting your island count to five. You will also find a limited number of providers offering a 5 Island Tour with a final stop at Railay’s Pranang Beach , for those that want to experience swimming in the bio-luminescence after dark.

However, it’s worth noting that Koh Tup is a National Park island, meaning that there is a fee to land on it. While some tours many include this in their overall ticket cost, be sure to confirm this before taking your trip there.

Alongside Koh Poda, Koh Gai, Ta Ming, and Si Island, the Tup Island tour is an excellent opportunity to explore the most beautiful and untouched locations. With crystal clear waters, during low tides, the sandbar here appears and serves as a land bridge from one rock formation to the other, allowing exploreres to wade through the sea and cool off from the heat.

Overview of Krabi and its 4 Islands

a view of railay beach's east and west beach from the viewpoint

Krabi is a province in southern Thailand that is known for its stunning natural beauty and numerous attractions, such as Phra Nang Cave Beach (Princess Cave) It boasts an impressive coastline of sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and towering limestone cliffs. Krabi also includes four beautiful islands – Poda Island, Koh Gai, Si Island, and Ta Ming Island.

Reaching the Islands via boat

The main way to reach the four islands of Krabi is by boat tour , either from the mainland or from other nearby islands. You can start our Krabi Sunset Cruise from either Ao Nang beach or Railay beach. Boat tours to the islands can take as little as 30 minutes, or as long ad a full afternoon (depending on which island/islands you are travelling to). During peak season, there are high-speed ferries and longtail boats that provide convenient transportation to and from each of the islands.

What to expect from the tour (Activities, Sights, Food, Culture)

Poda island.

Poda Island is the most popular of Krabi’s four islands and is considered to be the crown jewel of this picturesque province. It is known for its stunning white sandy beach, crystal-clear waters, and towering limestone cliffs that offer spectacular views.

The island also has a lush tropical jungle and (for private visitors) there is a place there where you can buy food and drinks. You migh even be lucky enough to see monkeys there!

Koh Gai Island

Koh Gai is a smaller tropical island, with rugged cliffs, the most famous of which looks like a chickens head. While the landscape doesn’t allow for you to walk onto Koh gai, the waters around it are a great place to snorkel.

Si Island is the most remote of Krabi’s four islands and boasts some of Thailand’s best snorkeling spots. This spot is favoured by divers, as it is surrounded by two huge coral garden, with its clearest spot usually sitting to the south of the island. If you’re very lucky, it’s not uncommon to see seahorses, but you should also see snappers and scorpion fish.

Ta Ming Island

Ta Ming Island is an isolated paradise that is perfect for those looking for a sense of calm and tranquility. The island features a little cove with a hidden beach, as well as lush jungles and great waters for kayaking. It used to be a key spot for deep water solo climbing (where a fall would result in a drop into the waters below), but the National Park teams have put a restriction on that now.

Safety Tips When Traveling in Krabi

When travelling in Krabi, it is crucial to stay safe. Before embarking on your journey, it is essential to do some research and familiarize yourself with local laws and customs. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while exploring this beautiful province:

Protect your Valuables

Make sure to keep cash, credit cards, and other valuables in a safe place or have a money belt. While Krabi provence doesn’t have a reputation for tourist robberies or theft, we recommend that you take caution the way you would in any unfamiliar location.

Be aware of your surroundings every time, and be vigilant when walking around late at night. Again, Krabi (particularly Ao Nang) is relatively safe due to its high tourist count. However, like everywhere else, we don’t recommend night-time walks alone in places that you’re not used to.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure you drink plenty of water, especially during the hot season. At peak times, temparatures can reach 40 degrees celius, plus! In March 2023, a tourist lost their life while attempting the 1200 steps up to Krabi’s famous Tiger Cave temple in extreme heat.

Follow Safety Advice

Always follow safety advice from local authorities and tour guides.

Respect the Environment

Take only photos and respect local wildlife, culture, and customs when you’re exploring the islands. As tour operators ourselves, we spend a lot of time fishing out disgarded tourist litter from the waters, and clearing up after people on the beaches.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Krabi.

How Much is the 4-Island Tour in Krabi?

Operator prices will vary significantly depending on the method of trabsport you choose. Longtail boat tours can start from as little as 900 Baht for a large group tour, while speedboat and larger boat costs range from 1,500 to 3000 Thai Baht per person. It’s worth noting, the price you pay will regularly dictate the comfort and service you recieve, alongside the things provided by your guide.

Island tours typically include round-trip transport from your hotel in Krabi town, lunch and drinks throughout the day, and stops at locations like Tup Island, Chicken Island, Phra Nang Beach, and Poda Island.

Additionally, some operators may include travel insurance in the cost of their tour packages. It is essential to research different tour operators before deciding which one to book with for the best price and experience.

Four island tour

It was a nice tour although The boat was to too full. They didn’t have good seats fair everyone. The island were busy but beautiful . The kids had a great day

Dear Julie, Thank you for your review. We provide a traditional and big longtail boat with 70 seats and can be a maximum 60 people for this tour. So everyone will surely have the seats. The 4 islands tour is the most tourist attractions in Krabi, so there are crowded all year round especially in high season. Best regards, Rinda

The staff is friendly, responsible and professional. My husband and I visited joined their Koh Rok snorkeling tour. We stopped at 2 snorkeling places, then headed to a beautiful beach were we had lunch and spent some time chilling and swimming. We finished off at another snorkeling site. Although it's pretty sad to see how the coral reef is dying it's still nice to see what is left, along with all the fish. We had a great time!

We booked a full day with pick up from our Villa. The pick up was prompt and as we were not in a hotel was great. The drive from Ao Nang took about 40 mins, on arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and our guide showed us novices how to paddle and steer. We set off into the mangroves as a group of eight, the scenery was spectacular. We were out for about 3 hours and did about 6km which is quite tough so you need to be fairly fit to do this. On arrival back at the pier we had lunch provided which was excellent, but you can’t have alcohol (we were not bothered as we had another trip to do) we then set off up river on our second trip, it was very hot so we asked the guide if we could keep it easy, he suggested we kayak for about 30mins to a sand bank and pool we could swim, this was absolutely fantastic the water was cool and we were the only people there, a wonderful experience. We then kayaked back and saw monkeys playing in the water, another great experience. As we were going to be back early the guide called ahead so our transport was waiting for us. As a party of six every one had a fabulous day but it is quite physically challenging.

Picked up from the beach in front of hotel, 45 mins ride to the first snorkelling site. They brought us to 3 different snorkelling sites. In between lunch at Koh Rok island. Beautiful island, though when we reached it was low tide so not so much to snorkel. Buffet lunch was served, was good too.

Lots of islands to see. Picked up by speedboat but it did a few pickups before we started the trip 1 snorkelling stop then we Went to a few islands where you can snorkel. Lunch was nice Thai food. Water and coke available on the trip and afternoon snack brought round. Tour guide was nice and friendly and explained where we went. Didn’t have the best English so struggle to understand some things. The best part was the 80 m swim through emerald cave to a private beach. Great experience. Last stop is at Koh Noi which is a beautiful beach and nice resorts where you get 1.5 hour to relax

hi, i'm going to krabi during this coming 16th to 19th feb 2011 for my honeymoon trip..i'm not very sure either to choose phi phi island tour or 4 island tour..which one is better for my honeymoon? pls gv me some advices

' class=

i just got back - had the same confusion - eventually decided on phi phi and it proved to be a great decision. They stop at a few other beaches apart from phi phi (monkey beach, maya bay etc) and overall its lovely.

' class=

I would imagine the four island tour will be no where near as crowded as you can do it in a long tail which will be far more romatic and special for you.

Phi Phi is gorgeous but it is crowded and so popular.

I think a day out in the long tail will be a really nice day together.

four island tour tripadvisor

There is a Sunset Phi Phi tour available which sets out and returns after the crowds, and you get to eat a romantic sunset dinner and a glass of wine on the cruise back to the beach... A better Honeymoon option I think - Congratulations!

Ah yes sarcasmatron - u have a valid point there! overlooked the dates!

Please tell me more about the Phi Phi sunset tour - I love Phi Phi Island and we are not stayign there in this trip - but a visit may be a good option to fullfill my craving!

You can find the details on the web at...

http://www.krabi-spesialisten.com/excursions/aonang/phi-phi-sunset-cruise

Update on the Sunset Cruise to Phi Phi.

This year the trip will start running from 15th of November and it will be on a luxury Chinese Junk, very nice!

Pick up for the trip will be at around 8:00am and return to the beach will be at around 7:00pm. Buffet lunch is served on the trip and cocktails at sunset.

It looks stunning!

Thanks for the link.

' class=

that was a very good link however i wasnt able to find any prices. also, do we need to book in advance for these tours or can i just call up 1-2 days in advance or even just turn up on the day?

The trip doesn't start till Mid November so I haven't seen any published rates yet, but I'd imagine it will be around the 3'200- 3'600 Baht range - about twice the price of the speedboat trips (which I wouldn't do again if you paid me) for a once in a lifetime experience, not bad at all.

I have come by a 4 island tour that goes to chicken island, tup island, poda island and phra nang bay (railey beach). But it obviously doesn't do james bond island. The perk to this is it is all by speedboat whereas the james bond island ones seem to have a 1.5 hour bus trip each way.

Is anyone that is familiar with these areas able to advise on what is to be expected from each trip and whether one option is better than the other. Or better yet if there is a tour that does JBI and some of the other islands rather than elephant trekking, fishing village etc.

' class=

I'm a total water baby so I love the speedboats and four islands tour, it's more relaxed and chilled out with loads of time to swim and snorkel on the various beaches/Islands/lagoons. They give you a great lunch too.

If I only had time do one of them it would be that.

four island tour tripadvisor

You could consider a private tour by long tail boat to Hong Island which did incorporate a few other islands . I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a rainy day .

Which other islands did you see? I've found a tour that does hong island as well as the four island tours for 1700baht. Not sure if that's a good price or not. I wondered if it would be fitting in too much in one day, mind you the tour day is longer so probably allows for the time there as well.

We've done a few of these day tours out from Aonang and found the best to be the Hong island trip by speed boat. There are four stops included in the Hong island tour each more beautiful than the last. There's lots and lots of the stunning limestone cliffs in water very similar to the James Bond one but much less crowded.

As well as doing a day trip you can just hire a long tail from the booth near the beach and do Railay, poda and chicken island easily. None of these are far.

Oeganise it when you get there. Lots of places sell these standard tours and you can compare prices.

Is the 1700 baht for private tour ?

No it's not private it's group speed boat trip

Just discovered it isn't 1700 it's 2600 baht for the hong island and four islands by speed boat....1700 was for a child. That seems quite expensive for a day trip???

We did a private tour on a long tail to Hong Island and a few others for 2500 per person, can't recall names if others but was a great day.Speed boat tours are expensive.

Krystle the speed boats tours are expensive but for the longer distances - Phi Phi or Hong, they are a much better option. This is particularly so if the sea is rough or choppy. The day we went we zipped home past the long tails that were getting thrown about and I was so glad to be on the faster boat. You get there quicker and have more time. With calm seas it wouldn't matter so much I guess.

The long tails are good for the closer islands like Poda, Chicken and Tub - and over to Railay.

Don't book ahead. There are lots of booking options when you get there and you can often get it cheaper. Particularly so in low season.

4 hour island buggy tour

Me and my partner shared a buggy on the 4 hour buggy tour. The tour was amazing fun driving through all the different terrains. Stopping at a few sights quickly for 5-10mins. Seeing a lot of the island whilst having fun in between. Highly recommend this activity. All the staff were great made you feel comfortable and at ease. Especially Freddie and Eddie who were the highlight of the trip making us laugh throughout.

Marvellous experience! Fun, sightseeing and adrenaline in 1! Quite hi-paced buggy rides offroad on stone and sand paths are mixed with stops at the highlights of Sal island (volcanic shoreline, salt crater, shark bay). Good and fun guides and good pace that will satisfy the offroad enthusiasts!

Claudia and the rest of the crew were amazing and my family (with a two year old) loved the Catamaran boat tour, would definitely recommend!

Great fun, my daughter and I loved it. The 2 hours went so quickly. The staff at no limits were really nice and very friendly. Buggy’s felt very safe and well maintained, would 100% recommend.
