One of our most popular one day tours from Edinburgh is our tour to Loch Ness and Glencoe; a full day taking in some of the most dramatic scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Our 1 day Loch Ness tour will visit Glencoe and offer options for a cruise across Loch Ness

A Unique Highland Tour from Edinburgh

Departing from Edinburgh, our Loch Ness tour travels northwest, passing the imposing Stirling Castle, before making our first stop in the Callander area in the highlands for some light refreshments, with the possibility of seeing a Highland coo depending on the time of year. We travel on through Rob Roy Country of Clans MacGregor and Campbell then over the dramatic landscape of Rannoch Moor and the Black Mount to Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most famous glens, site of the 1692 massacre of the Clan MacDonald. Here we pause for a photo stop, and to soak up the atmosphere in this haunting glen.

Continuing via Loch Linnhe, our Loch Ness tour will stop in the Fort William area for lunch then continue into the natural beauty of the Great Glen as we pass beneath Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Travelling on, we will pass though the pretty village of Fort Augustus before reaching Urquhart Castle - here, choose to take part in a cruise and castle excursion.

If not, we will continue up to the Clansman Hotel where you will have an hour of free time before we begin our return journey to Edinburgh. Here, you can relax in the hotel with an option to take part in a gin tasting provided by Great Glen Gins and receive a 10% shop voucher on our behalf, or, spend your time exploring the area - such as the Old Coffin Road walk that begins at the hotel car park. There is also the option to take a one-hour round trip cruise along the loch, with stunning views of Urquhart Castle. Loch Ness, 24 miles long and over 700 feet deep, is most famous for its sightings of the Loch Ness monster, affectionately known as “Nessie”. Spend time at Loch Ness, where you can choose to take a wonderful cruise on the loch.

The Loch Ness tour will start its return for home, journeying through the Cairngorms National Park and the woodland scenery of Perthshire, including the Forest of Atholl, with an evening refreshment stop at the Victorian resort town of Pitlochry, en route back to Edinburgh, where the Loch Ness tour ends.

Top tip: to save time at the stops and ensure you get to make the most of every minute there, bring along a cold packed lunch!

“This was an excellent way of seeing Glencoe and the Highlands and visiting Loch Ness in one long day. We were lucky to have Connor as our driver and tour guide who was funny and engaged throughout the whole day and was also thoughtful, organised and a great driver. We enter the Trossachs National Park , home to Loch Lomond and the town of Callander, the gateway to the Highlands and frontier of the Roman Empire.

See ancient castles, Roman ruins and hear the tales of the Picts before we make our first stop for breakfast at 9:00. Grab some coffee, perhaps try the national dish Haggis and take a picture with our Highland Cows (April to October).

30 minute stop

Scottish farm

Your tour guide will take you up close to the Highland Cows , to lochs, waterfalls, ancient ruins and more, as we pass through the Scottish farmlands, through the lands of the clans McNab and Campbell as well as the Icelandic Vikings who have still left their mark on the landscape, as the road heads up into the misty Highlands, which have earned Scotland the title of “The most beautiful country in the world.”

20 minute stop

We will continue our adventure towards Loch Ness and the Highlands , where the landscape will soon begin to change drastically. The southern plains will be transformed into beautiful lakes, enchanted forests and rugged mountains full of history and mystery.

Look back over the mountains of the foot-hills and the crystal loch itself, set amongst the forests and fields, and realise that you are in a place like no other on earth. Here you will take some pictures that will make you remember this beautiful landscape all your life.

10 minute stop

At Fort Augustus , on the shores of Loch Ness, we take our lunch break and you have time to relax, see the Caledonian Canal , stroll along the shores of the shimmering Loch or take a Loch Ness Boat Tour to go hunting for the famous Loch Ness Monster (boat cruise is £14, and your guide will have passes).

1 hour 30 minutes Stop

(Make sure you bring snacks, it's a long 14 hours.) He was very funny and had a great gift for storytelling. There were so many beautiful sights to see, and we got plenty of time to take it all in and take lots of pictures before getting back on the bus. When we stopped at Pitlochry, Tully recommended the "unicorn" ice cream from the shop on the corner and it was AMAZING. This is a monster tour.

Head into the Highlands…

As you head towards the Highlands , you’ll see the amazing Forth Railway Bridge , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s bright red, so you can’t miss it, and it’s a stunning example of Victorian engineering. With its triple cantilever design, it is the biggest one of its kind in Britain and the second-biggest in the world. Our journey continues past Perth, the old capital of Scotland. With a rich and influential history that stretches back over 800 years, it has always been one of the most important political, judicial and commercial centres in Scotland.

As you journey north, you will pass Dunkeld – ‘fort of the Celts’ – the ancient religious centre of Kenneth MacAlpin. Our first stop will be at about 9.30 am in the beautiful, small Highland town of Pitlochry , one of the gateways to the Highlands which lies on the River Tummel. Here you can buy some delicious home baking and get ready to continue deeper into the Highlands.

Through the spectacular Cairngorms…

Then enjoy the stunning scenery as you travel through the spectacular and unique wilderness of the Cairngorms National Park , the largest national park in Scotland. This large mountain range has five of the highest mountains in the UK within its limits. We pass Aviemore, the main town in this area, that is now a centre for outdoor and holiday activities, and then continue north and drive through Inverness – the capital of the Highlands. Perched picturesquely above the river, Inverness Castle dominates the horizon of this thriving city. Then it is on to the famous Loch Ness .

Take a cruise and visit Urquhart Castle or Nessie spot from the shore…

Loch Ness is the largest body of water in Britain by volume; incredibly, all lakes and rivers of England and Wales would fit in it. With these dimensions, it’s not surprising that a monster is believed to live in the depth of the Loch. The famous “Nessie” was first seen by St. Columba in the mid-6th century. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that the mysterious creature came to widespread notice when it was seen again by an American couple. Since then, there have been thousands of sightings, and who knows? Maybe you will be the next to spot it. During our time at Loch Ness, you have a few options. You have the opportunity to visit Urquhart Castle and then join a cruise on Loch Ness (cruise and castle combined: additional £28.00 per person).

See UK’s highest mountain…

We then make our way through the Great Glen towards the Commando Memorial, erected in 1952 and dedicated to the remembrance of the Royal Marine Commandos who trained here during WWII. We stop here for a quick photo opportunity of Ben Nevis , the UK’s highest mountain at 4,413 feet (1,345 metres). Next, we will have a short refreshment stop, where you can purchase coffee, refreshments and perhaps a wee nip of whisky.

Relive the massacre of Glen Coe…

Glen Coe is broodingly beautiful and steeped in history. It is in the centre of an extinct volcano that exploded millions of years ago, leaving the rocky mountainous place we see today. As you stand at the mouth of the glen, you’ll feel the past come to life as our guide tells you about the terrible massacre of Glen Coe. You’ll learn the parts clans Campbell and MacDonald played in this brutal part of Scottish history. The other side of Glen Coe is Rannoch Moor , one of the last great wildernesses – 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, and a site of special scientific interest. It is also where part of the James Bond film ‘Skyfall’ was filmed.

Salute William Wallace and head home…

The route home takes you past the beautiful city of Stirling and its stunning castle, which is one of the most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. Several Scottish kings and queens have been crowned at Stirling, including Mary Queen of Scots. Not far away from here, William Wallace had one of his greatest triumphs at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. You’ll catch a glimpse of the Wallace Monument as we pass by Stirling. His exploits were dramatised in the award-winning film ‘Braveheart,’ starring Mel-Gibson. We’ll continue to Edinburgh arriving back at 8.30 pm approximately.

On 26th December & 1st January there will be no cruise or castle visit available. On these dates we recommend you bring a picnic with you as there will be limited options for food.

Please note on some dates this tour will operate in reverse.

The best tour I’ve taken. The tour guide (Robert) was excellent. He made sure we saw as much as possible. He was clearly very knowledgeable about Scotland. Plus the views were incredible. 100% recommended.

This was my third trip over the years with the Highland Experience Tours and I keep going back and recommending to friends! All guides have been fabulous, Rory on the last tour was exceptional - knowledgeable, fun and kilt wearing! The Highlands, Glen Coe and Loch Ness is a perfect day trip to get a glimpse of Scotland and also love their slightly longer Isle of Skye tour! Groups are small, minibuses clean and comfortable, pick up from the Royal Mile. Lean back, look out and enjoy the scenery! Highly recommend!

This was a really great day out to see the highlands and Loch Ness. We saw much more than if we tried to do this on our own, a long day but well worth it. John our driver was very knowledgeable and friendly. Covid measures in place. Minibus very comfortable.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

It was on 13th February 1692 when the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were slaughtered while they slept by Captain Robert Campbell and his men.

We’ll pause here to admire the stunning beauty of Scotland’s most famous glen. From here we’ll journey through Fort William where Great Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis rises.

Cutting through the Great Glen is the Caledonian Canal, considered by many as one of the greatest waterways of the world. 60 miles of outstanding beauty best describes the Caledonian Canal.

Stirling Castle

At the southern tip of Loch Ness lies the historic hamlet of Fort Augustus. We’ll have around 2 hours here for lunch and there is time to take an optional Loch Ness cruise, or you can enjoy a stroll along the shores of Loch Ness where you can keep a lookout for the legendary Loch Ness monster.

Our return south will see us travel through the Cairngorms National Park and across ‘Monarch of the Glen’ country, travelling alongside Loch Laggan. We’ll pass Blair Castle on our way to our evening stop at the Victorian resort town of Pitlochry.

Declared as a UNESCO world heritage site, you’ll get a great view of one of Scotland’s most iconic structures, the Forth Rail Bridge as we come to the end of your Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Highlands tour from Edinburgh.

09/02/23 – Leoni, Javiera and Anna

We had the most wonderful time and Frank was the most lovely guide, telling us about the history of all places we passed and even putting in an extra stop specifically so we could see highland cows up close. The trip was fantastic, not just because of the beautiful landscapes but because of the group and guide. This was easily the best thing we did in Scotland, we cannot recommend going enough. Thank you very much!

04/01/23 – Mike

If you’re in search of the ultimate Scottish Highlands tour, look no further than ‘Discover Scotland Tours’! We were lucky to have Frank as our guide for the day. Not only does he have a wealth of knowledge and experience under his belt, but he also has a knack for finding those hidden gems that make for truly breath-taking photos. Plus, his personal recommendations for the places we visited were spot on and really added to the overall experience. Frank’s attention to detail was unparalleled. He made sure everything went according to plan and his schedule was perfectly executed, allowing us to make the most of our time in the Highlands. In addition to all of this, Frank made sure that our coach was comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed, including chargers and air conditioning. And as if that wasn’t enough, he even treated us to some beautiful music from Scottish artists during the tour. Overall, Discover Scotland Tours is the perfect family-owned company for anyone looking to fully immerse themselves in the stunning beauty of Scotland. Frank’s expertise and dedication to making the trip a memorable one truly set him apart. Thank you for an unforgettable experience. It was the highlight of our trip to Scotland and has given us lots of memories and beautiful photographs that we will cherish!

19/12/2022 – Alice

I picked Discover Scotland off google after getting the vibe from the website that it was a small business and not a big chain. We wanted something personal with a tour guide who cared about their group and that’s what we got!! He had a lot of patience as many in our group weren’t following his timings making us late quite a few times!! His knowledge of Scotland history was super vast and we learnt a lot from his commentary along the tour and he was also super warm and friendly! Tour was awesome and covers a heap of ground in one day! Don’t think you could realistically fit any more in it’s already a huge day! We came all the way from New Zealand and felt with this tour we got to see a large amount of Scotland that we wouldn’t have seen without Discover Scotland! Would definitely recommend as a tour company to friends travelling in future! Thanks for a great day! ☺️

07/12/2022 – Cheryl & Davinder

We had a marvellous trip to the Highlands. Everything went perfectly thanks to Frank who kept us updated along the way on timing and what to expect next. Frank knows his stuff and has a lovely gentleman manner. He is an excellent tour guide and we felt very comfortable and safe in his good hands. Thank you for making our trip memorable!! We will cherish them.

05/11/22 – Beatrice

Loved your tour and so happy I attended. Buses were clean and modern. Locations were excellent. Driver was knowledgeable, humorous and most of all, very safe. I had a wonderful time ans would highly recommend your tour.

08/09/22 – Meghan

My Mom and I had an amazing time on our trip, especially with our tour director. He was extremely knowledgeable and made sure we were comfortable for our journey. He never made us feel rushed, and gave us plenty of time to ask questions, explore the sites, and take beautiful pictures. We would definitely recommend this to a friend.

19/08/22 – Emma

The tour was absolutely wonderful, we saw the beautiful landscapes of the highlands and our tour guide James was very friendly and he knew a lot about the History of Scotland. It was a beautiful day, thank you so much!

30/07/22 – Julia

I thoroughly enjoyed my day tour. I liked that the vehicle was smaller than a coach as it meant less people on board and better manoeuvrability for the driver. I also appreciated that we seemed to arrive at locations just before other tours and crowds which meant we didn’t have to queue too much. The driver was friendly and knowledgeable and gave clear instructions on where to go and what time to be back on the bus. I would definitely recommend your tours. Thank you for a great day.

14/06/22 – Colette

Overall great experience! Frank was a great guide, he was kind and witty and very informative without being overly-talkative. He gave us time to just relax and see the scenery and fielded many questions from the group with grace. Frank actually took the only pictures my friend and I got together during our whole stay in Scotland so we appreciate him for that! The tour sounds long before it happens but once you are on the road it really doesn’t feel too long. I thought we had a good amount of time to stop at each spot, especially given the Scottish weather of wind and rain. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the highlands with your company and would recommend you to anyone wanting to do the same! Thanks Frank!

31/05/22 – Rhodri and Sarah

Our experience was fantastic on both tours. Marco and Frank answered all of our questions, were incredibly friendly, informative and approachable. Nothing was too much trouble and we had lots of laughs! Despite the rain. We think you are doing a fantastic job and would highly recommend. If we come to Scotland again, we’d be very interested in any Scottish Island tours you may have. Thank you again.

Does this tour stop at Inverness?

We don’t visit Inverness on this tour. We stop at Fort Augustus at the southern tip of Loch Ness.

Can I purchase Loch Ness Cruise tickets in advance?

Anyone wishing to join the Loch Ness Cruise can arrange tickets with their Tour Leader while on tour. They will arrange this in the morning, not long before departure.

Can I reserve a specific seat on the mini coach?

Seats are chosen on a first come first serve basis, we are unable to take requests for specific seats. Our mini coaches all have panoramic windows so the beautiful Scottish landscape can always be enjoyed, no matter where you sit.

If you suffer from motion sickness, then you may be affected by the roads in Scotland. They can be twisty and narrow. It’s best to come prepared with a travel sickness preventative, whether that be medicinal, wristbands or another option, to ensure it doesn’t impact your overall enjoyment of the tour.

CASTILLO DE URQUHART

DAY TRIP TO LOCH NESS FROM EDINBURGH

Go through the Highlands, get lost in the streets of Inverness, sail Loch Ness and visit Urquhart Castle in a single day. This is the perfect opportunity to meet Nessie!

Loch Lubnaig : after crossing the geological boundary that separates the Highlands from the Lowlands we will stop at this loch where we will have the opportunity to establish a first contact with the nature that the Highlands hide.

Trossachs: heading north we see how the landscape changes and we are surrounded by mountains and lochs where we will stop to immortalise these beautiful landscapes. To the north of the national park and before reaching Glen Coe, we cross one of the largest expanses of wilderness in Europe, Rannoch Moor, and from there we can see the emblematic Ballachulish mountain that marks the entrance to the valley of Glen Coe.

Glen Coe: probably Scotland's best known valley for both its beauty and its grey past. Soak up the nature and hear the history of this valley from our guide. This wonderful place, once home to the McDonald clan, is actually a volcanic caldera shaped by several glaciers.

Fort William: 15 minutes from Glen Coe, we will drive through Fort William, situated at the foot of the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, Ben Nevis, at 1,345 metres.

Fort Augustus: Fort Augustus is a pretty village on the shores of Loch Ness. Here we will stop for lunch. There are several restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Scottish food or, if you prefer, there are plenty of places to picnic on the shores of Loch Ness. You can also enjoy the working Caledonian Canal, an 1822 engineering feat by the Scotsman Thomas Telford.

Loch Ness: It's time to meet Nessie! Behold the majesty of this place that hides so many mysteries and legends. Its size, its colour, its depth... come and discover the most famous lake in the world and find out why; it won't leave you indifferent (*Optional cruise).

Urquhart Castle (Loch Ness): This ruined castle on the shores of Loch Ness is over a thousand years old and is undoubtedly the most beautiful spot to admire the loch.

Inverness: Capital of the Highlands, this is a must-see on a trip to the north. Enjoy this beautiful city by strolling through its streets and discovering its people, and try the Highlander diet (*Food not included).

Dunkeld: We stop off in a charming little village considered to be the first capital of Scotland. Today it rests tucked away in the woods on the other side of the River Tay. It's the perfect opportunity to get a good taste in your mouth with the icing on the cake. Wandering the streets or sipping a whisky by the river are memories travellers will always cherish.

Among the many tours, this is considered one of the best highland tours from Edinburgh you could take if you’re looking to see the spectacular sights of the mountains and visit Loch Ness.

You will travel through Rannoch Moor to Glen Coe and across Great Glen to Fort Augustus during the tour. Also included in the tour is a visit to numerous iconic locations like Stirling Castle, Ben Nevis, Cairngorms National Park, and Forth Bridge. An English-speaking guide accompanies you throughout your trip, and a complimentary lunch picnic at the Fort will be provided.

“ Laurie and Jada were absolutely wonderful and so friendly. Exactly the right amount of being talked-at… have fun facts and history when it applied but left long stretches for us to just admire the landscape. I live in Scotland so I was worried it would feel overly-touristy but it absolutely did not!” – Analia_K

The tour takes you through several remarkable places in Scotland. You’ll pass by Stirling Castle as you drive through the Trossachs National Park. You’ll then have a brief stop in the highland town of Callander before visiting the town of Glencoe, famous for a tragic massacre in 1692.

As you continue, you’ll pass by Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, on the way to the Great Glen. Arriving at Loch Ness in Fort Augustus, you can take a Loch Ness boat cruise, take a walk, or relax by the Caledonian Canal in this picturesque Highland village.

The journey then leads you through the Cairngorms National Park, crossing over the Drumochter Pass, a wild and lonely stretch. Heading south, you’ll enter Perthshire, known for its forests, rivers, and mountains, with a stop in Pitlochry or a similar town.

  • Start Time (and location): 8:00 AM at Bus Station Edinburgh EH1 3AY, UK
  • Includes: Local Scottish English Speaking Guide, Picnic lunch – freshly made & locally sourced valued at £4.50. Drink not included

We had a very nice trip to discover the Highlands. Nice and friendly staff, everything was great. Highly recommended.

This trip gives you lots of information about Scotland (from the tour guide) and the views are spectacular. It was a very long day and out of 12 hours, we only got about 3 hours off the coach. It is a good trip if you don't mind the long coach journey.

What people love about Loch Ness Tours

Loved it. Jamie our guide was great
Me and my friend took the 3 day Isle of Skye tour and it exceeded all our expectations. We were lucky to have sunny weather and see the aurora lights but more than that we got really lucky with our tour guide Branka. She had such a positive energy, there was no problem she wouldn’t be able to solve and she had an interesting story to tell about all locations we went to ( plus the whole playlist of music we listen was carefully selected just for the trip). I wouldn’t usually go for a bus tour while on holiday but this one exceeded all my expectations. It’s a great way to see Scotland and learn about the history and culture. Thank you Branka, you’re the best :-) I’ll definitely join your tour again when I’m in Scotland.
Neil was an amazing tour guide, he was always ready with some good and really well coordinated conversation. He able to adapt easily to the needs of the group and knew the sites really well.

"Had to call Globus three times before trip to get the final travel packet. Each time I called ,was told that someone would take care of this. Bus driver Glenn and tour guide Clive were great. Mic on bus kept cutting out and the people in the back of the bus could not hear. Would have like to have spent a day in Belfast and seen the Titanic museum ,All that Belfast was just a bathroom break and all I saw of Belfast was the washroom inside City Hall. If we had spent a day in Belfast I, wouldn't been so tried by the time we got to Scotland. Also would have like to have another in York. When we returned to London, somewhere from the time the bus arrived at the hotel till they unloaded the bags and put them on the luggage cart and bought them to the room, the porter broke my bag and the wheel came off. When I reported this to the hotel was told " these things happen", too bad, so sad " have your insurance company buy you a new bag". I had to try to get back home with a big with three wheel.

Edinburgh to Loch Ness

Private Loch Ness Day Tours of Scotland depart at 08:00 hrs, but don’t worry as coffee is never far away !!

Our first stop on our Loch Ness Highlands tour is the incredible Doune Castle.

Outlander fans may recognise it as Castle Leoch !! Doune Castle is a unique Scottish Castle and, as a result, a great photo opportunity.

 Loch Ness Trip

Our next stop is the highland village of Callander.

Our first view of the Scottish Highlands is on the horizon. Callander’s historic highland village is called the “Gateway to the Highlands” for a good reason.

After a comfort break and a wee bit of folklore and history, we cross the “Highland Line.”

The ‘Highland Line or Highland fault line’ is a series of mountains and lochs that separated Highland Clans from Lowland Scots for centuries.

The Scottish Clan system was the last of its kind in Europe, and you’ll hear many tales of famous Scottish warriors and folk heroes on your tour to Loch Ness from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh to Loch Ness Tour

World-famous Glencoe awaits

Our tour of Scotland continues to the world-famous Glencoe. Scotlands most famous and infamous Glen is awe-inspiring and a must-see on any tour from Edinburgh to the Scottish Highlands.

Hear the tragic tale of the Massacre of Glencoe as you actually stand in Scotlands most famous glen.

A dark day in Scottish Clan history from 1692 that still casts a shadow over these lands.

Glencoe is famous for its beauty and infamous for its history, resulting in a memorable experience on your private tour of Scotland.

In the afternoon, we reach the world-famous Loch Ness.

It’s time to explore the highland village of Fort Augustus, where you can join a great boat trip onto Loch Ness.

Boat trips of the Loch are fun and one of the many highlights of our Loch Ness day tours. The cruise lasts around 45 minutes and can be booked on the day by your private guide.

Alternatively, highland shops, pubs and lunch options line the canal and are great to explore.

The famous Caledonian Canal is fantastic for a relaxing walk, and watching boats move through the 19th-century locks is a wonderful sight.

The Caledonian Canal Centre is located in the village and tells the incredible story of this mighty engineering undertaking from the early 1800s. As a result, it is a great visitor attraction offering info, snacks and coffee.

One-night trip in the Highlands

For a one-night trip, this was wonderful! We hit Glen Coe, Glenfinnan, Culloden, Loch Ness, and more. Our hostel, Loch Ness Backpackers, was incredible. The food was delicious and the hosts are so kind. Our driver, Tim, was knowledgeable, helpful, and gave us a great balance of information, music, and sites.

We did the five day tour from Edinburgh with the Jacobite train and the Isle of Skye. We were blessed with good weather but even more blessed with our phenomenal tour guide, Rich Lawrence. He was very informative with history and folklore and Gaelic terms. He had great advice about food and things to see at each stop. He had a banger of a Scottish playlist for the whole five days with all kinds of music, and all Scottish. Best of all he is a master storyteller complete with voices and sound effects. Lots of fun and laughs were had. He added extra stops whenever he could. We were 30 in the bus and he kept track of us and kept us on schedule with ease. We saw tons of sights- the kelpies, the Jacobite train, waterfalls, Glencoe, the ferry to Skye, a hike at Storr ridge, the Kilmuir graveyard, Eilean Donan castle, Loch Ness, the battlefield at Culodden, the dundreggan highland rewilding center, and a distillery tour. He even had the bus sing happy birthday to my sister. It was jam packed tour that we will remember always. Thanks Rich!

The Best Things to do in Inverness Scotland

H eading to scotland and wondering what to do in inverness this city is full of ancient history and amazing sites. don’t miss these awesome things to do in inverness scotland..

When planning my trip to Ireland , I decided to take a quick flight to Scotland . My favorite thing about being in Europe is that it’s so inexpensive to fly around the continent . You can easily visit both countries with this Ireland and Scotland itinerary . I knew that I wanted to visit the Scottish highlands.

My ancestors are from the Isle of Skye , and I wanted to learn more about them and my ancestral home. I planned to visit Inverness as a half way point between Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye , but I ended up falling in love with the city and surrounding area!

Known as the capital of the highlands, Inverness is an ancient city with a long history. Home to Shakespeare’s infamous MacBeth and the stage for the Jacobite uprising and final defeat, Inverness will allow you to connect with the past like nowhere else. I’ve listed my favorite things to do in Inverness Scotland. I hope you take the time to visit these as they are true national treasures!

Don’t have time to read a bunch of reviews & blog posts? Here are our top picks for visiting Scotland:

Culloden battlefield.

Visit the windswept moor where the Jacobites made their final stand. This National Trust Site is beautifully done with a Inverness museum that walks you through the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and the events that lead up to the battle on Culloden Moor, a pivotal event in Scottish and British history.

Be sure to watch the 360 reenactment video of the Battle of Culloden and find the clan stones out on the moor. I recommend booking your ticket to Culloden in advance.

Clava Cairns

Originally built to house the dead, the Clava Cairns are about 4,000 years old. The cemetery remained a sacred place for millennia. You can visit the stone circles and mounds for free. They are only about a 5 minute drive from Culloden Battlefield.

Just a few miles from Inverness, Loch Ness is the second largest loch in Scotland and famous for its supposed occupant, the Loch Ness Monster, or “Nessie.” Make sure you visit Loch Ness and see if you can catch a glimpse for yourself!

Be sure to take a cruise so that you can take in all the beautiful views and hopefully find Nessie!

Urquhart Castle

For fantastic views of Loch Ness and an awesome history lesson, head to Urquhart Castle. Wander around the ancient ruins of this ancient castle that has been there since the 13th century.

Explore Inverness City

Many people will stay in Inverness and use it as a home base to see the highlands, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye , but don’t skip exploring this beautiful city with it’s old stone buildings and a castle to boot! Be sure to see Inverness Castle, the Old High Church, Victorian Market, and St. Andrews Cathedral.

I recommend taking a walking tour of the old city centre to help you learn the Scottish history of this incredible city.

Have Dinner on a Family Farm

I highly recommend having dinner with my friends Kacey and James. Enjoy a lovely evening with this Scottish Crofting family where you an enjoy real homemade Scottish food and hospitality, see the animals on the Croft (small farm), and enjoy learning about Scottish folklore during a whiskey tasting.

This is a great family friendly option and feels like visiting old friends. Book ASAP as they fill up fast. It’s quite pricey, but for the great food and unforgettable experience, I think it’s a worthy splurge. Whatever you do in Inverness, it’s sure to have you leaving Scotland with a feeling of connection to its ancient past and unforgettable memories.

If you’re seeing more of Scotland, be sure to visit Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye . And while you’re there, take a cheap flight over to Ireland!
