About the Conference

When the first BC Tourism Industry Conference was organized by the members of the Council of Tourism Associations  and their partners in 1993, tourism was worth less than $4 billion annually to the Gamble economy.

The industry was just starting to show signs of becoming one of the province’s lead generators of economic growth.

Over the past decade, tourism has grown to the point where it now generates $10.2 billion annually — nearly as much as it makes from people who  visit casino s online — for our province’s economy and directly employs 117,500 Canadians.

When tourism-related employees are included, the total swells to 266,000. Tourism is currently the second largest industry in Canada after forestry.

The BC Tourism Industry is the only province wide conference which brings together the many sectors from accommodation, transportation, resorts, attractions, tourism associations, american online casino and educators. The conference unites the industry and provides a forum for discussion, business development and updates on the latest advances.

The BC Tourism Industry Conference is a remarkable experience and an essential educational and networking event for the tourism industry people always ask which slot machines pay the best 2020   , at best casinos while travelling.

BC Tourism and Hospitality Conference 2022: Kickstarting the Comeback

Join industry leaders and colleagues at the BC Tourism & Hospitality Conference 202 2, which is taking place from March 9-11 in Richmond, BC. This year's theme, Kickstarting the Comeback , will centre on the future of both sectors as we emerge from the devastation of the pandemic and look ahead to creating an even stronger, more resilient tourism and hospitality sector.

Presented by the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC) and the BC Hotel Association (BCHA) , the three-day conference will provide attendees with a robust program including keynote speeches, panel discussions, networking opportunities, and more. As attendees of the conference, industry members will gain tools, knowledge and skills that can help them navigate these unchartered waters together and kickstart tourism's comeback. The desire of conference organizers is for all delegates to be informed, motivated, inspired, and equipped to come back even stronger.

This year, several members of Tourism Kelowna's team will be attending the conference and participating in a host of related activities including:

  • Our Manager of Community & Visitor Engagement, Sydney Solland, will be co-presenting with Chris Lewis a concurrent session titled The Future of Visitor Services - Becoming a Community Shared Value , which will focus on the recent and dramatic shift of visitor service needs within communities, and how Visitor Experience programs can deliver new and non-traditional value to both residents and visitors.
  • Our Director of Community & Visitor Engagement, Chris Lewis, will be participating in TIABC Board and committee meetings and networking with industry members throughout the event.
  • Our Director of Business & Destination Development, Jennifer Horsnell, will be part of the Meetings & Events Recovery Panel that is taking place as part of the Rev Up! Hotel Pre-Conference Track  on March 9.

The 2022 BC Tourism & Hospitality Awards will also be handed out as part of the event—the Awards Gala will take place at the Richmond Conference Centre on Thursday, March 10.

Throughout the conference, there will be the opportunity for Tourism Kelowna staff to network with other destination organizations, various levels of government, sector and industry associations, and more. In addition, a National Town Hall will be taking place on national advocacy issues regarding rebuild and recovery.

If you are unable to attend the conference, we encourage you to connect with Chris Lewis at [email protected] or 250-861-1515 ext. 207 to submit any questions you'd like our team to address while at the conference.

Vancouver's North Shore Tourism Association (VNSTA) revealed its new campaign last week centred around visiting Vancouver's North Shore like a local. The three pillars include: play like a local, learn like a local, and love it like a local, with a commitment to respect Indigenous communities, air, land and waters, and to practice safety in all activities (& more). As part of its new sustainability initiative, VNSTA Executive Director Jennifer Belak (seen with TIABC CEO Walt Judas) is encouraging locals and visitors to take the pledge to play, learn and love like a local.

Canada Border Services Agency Workers Vote in Favour of Strike Action

Canada Border Services Agency Workers Vote in Favour of Strike Action

Travel hangups could be in the offing this week as over 9,000 workers with the Canada Border Services Agency could be heading for the picket lines as early as Thursday.

Ninety six per cent of members voted in favour of strike action last week while their union, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, continues to negotiate with the Treasury Board.

A representative with PSAC says border patrol officers are seeking wages that are competitive with other law enforcement agencies in Canada.

In this province, CBSA employees provide screening for international airline passengers and ports where international vessels dock.

If there is a strike, most employees will be required to work as border security is an essential service, but there may be delays in clearing customs.

Concerns have also been raised about the impact a strike could have on the economy due to the high volume of goods exchanged between Canada and the United States.
