tour america coast to coast

Day 1: London to New York

We fly from London Heathrow to New York City, one of the USA's most lively cities. We spend two nights here; the perfect introduction to the vibrant culture of the United States.

Day 2: New York

Today we're introduced to the 'Big Apple' on a sightseeing cruise around iconic Manhattan Harbour, spotting landmarks from our unique vantage point on the water including Ellis Island and the torch-wielding icon, the Statue of Liberty herself. Back on land, we take a guided city tour of New York City, seeing world-famous sights including Central Park, the open, leafy space set amongst the city's glittering skyscrapers.

Day 3: Washington DC

Boarding a train south today, we travel to the nation's capital and political powerhouse, Washington D.C. We spend two nights here, immersing ourselves in the country's rich and fascinating political history. This afternoon, we head out on a guided tour that takes in many famous landmarks. We see the White House, the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States. We also visit Capitol Hill - the seat of the U.S. government, and Georgetown, a historic cobblestoned neighbourhood.

Day 4: Washington DC

On Day 4, you're free to explore the city at your own pace.

Day 5: To the Mid-West

Late this afternoon we leave the capital on Amtrak's Capitol Limited service. The service runs daily between Washington D.C. and the exciting city of Chicago, following the historic B&O line through the Potomac Valley. Our overnight journey takes in the vast and beautiful scenery of the United States, as we pass historic Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains on the way to Pittsburgh. We cross into Ohio and head north to Cleveland across Indiana as the train continues through the night.

Day 6: Chicago

We arrive in Chicago after breakfast. Known as the 'Windy City', Chicago is the capital of the state of Illinois and is set on the sea-like shores of the vast Lake Michigan. We take a city tour here that revisits the 'dry and lawless years' of the 1920s and 30s. We take in the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre as well as Al Capone's headquarters and some of the city's famous landmarks and architecture, including Willis Tower and Millenium Park.

Day 7: Chicago

You're free to explore Chicago in your own time today. The city boasts a stunning skyline along with many highly-rated museums, restaurants and cafés. You could climb the 110-storey Willis Tower, which, upon its completion in 1974, was the world's tallest building. On a clear day, from the observation deck, it's possible to enjoy views over four states - Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana.

Day 8: The Great Plains

After a free morning on Day 8, we board the California Zephyr for an overnight journey to Grand Junction, that takes us across the cornfields and plains of Iowa and Nebraska. The Zephyr has a Sightseer Lounge where you can relax and enjoy the views speeding past the window.

Day 9: Grand Junction

After a night spent winding past dramatic peaks and deep ravines, we arrive in Grand Junction, in the heart of Colorado's wine region. We spend the night here, and the rest of the day is free for you to get acquainted with the town. Explore downtown Main Street, where the atmosphere is distinctly 'small-town America', with pleasant cafés and restaurants, and characterful gift shops.

Day 10: Heritage American Rail

On Day 10, we make our way to Silverton for a journey on the Durango & Silverton Railroad. This is a wonderfully nostalgic rail journey that seemingly takes us back in time to the bygone 'Wild West' era famous from Hollywood movies. We travel through breathtaking canyons, past emerald-green rivers, and across the remote wilderness of the National Forest, finally arriving in Durango, where we spend the night.

Day 11: Monument Valley and Flagstaff

After breakfast, we depart Durango. Familiar from a hundred westerns, the rugged landscape of Utah's Monument Valley is one of America's defining images, and we discover it today as we pass through en-route to Flagstaff.

Day 12: Grand Canyon

On Day 12, we head along the legendary Route 66 to the town of Williams, where we join the Grand Canyon Railway. We travel in carriages hauled by historic locomotives on our way to one of the world's most awe-inspiring sights, the Grand Canyon. The canyon, created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. We arrive at the South Rim and the main viewpoint of the Canyon, where the views across the natural wonder are breathtaking.

Day 13: Las Vegas

Travelling along iconic Route 66 today, we make our way to Las Vegas, a city synonymous with indulgence, glitz and glamour and famed for its neon lights, famous casinos and lively shows. With an afternoon free in 'Sin City', it's the perfect time to enjoy a spot of shopping at one of the great shops on The Strip, or perhaps sit down to a delicious meal at one of the many world-class celebrity restaurants. We spend tonight in the city.

Day 14: Los Angeles

On Day 14, we continue across the desert to Los Angeles, another of the USA's most famous destinations. As the home of America's movie industry, the city is home to many of the worlds most rich and famous, something reflected in its sophisticated modern homes, chic restaurants, and exclusive boutiques. Our guided tour this afternoon introduces us to some of the most well-known spots in the city, including Hollywood Boulevard, where golden stars set into the pavement honour Hollywood's most famous names on the iconic Walk of Fame. We check into our hotel where you could enjoy a relaxed evening, or if you'd prefer, you could head out into LA to explore further.

Day 15: San Francisco

Leaving the bright lights of Los Angeles, we head to San Francisco on the Coast Starlight service, checking into our hotel for two nights upon arrival. San Francisco is a city rich in culture, where streets are lined with colourful Victorian buildings that lead down towards the attractive harbour.

Day 16: San Francisco

On Day 16, we begin the day with a transfer to Pier 39, a popular shopping district filled with arcades and restaurants. Here, we meet our tour guide who introduces us to the impressive sights of the city. We see the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf, an area famous for its sea lions, on our sightseeing tour. Later, we board a ship for a memorable sunset cruise, taking in the sights of the city as darkness begins to fall - the perfect way to bid farewell to San Francisco.

Day 17: San Francisco to London

We transfer to the airport today, for our flight back to London Heathrow.

Day 18: Arrive London

You arrive back in London this morning.

what our customers say

My partner and I spent three weeks driving Route 66 before finishing with a slight detour through Yosemite and on to San Francisco. Rather than say it was a mere holiday, I can only describe it as a once in a lifetime experience and we loved every minute of it. We had a great time exploring each new destination, as well as discovering all the hidden gems along each leg of the journey.

Top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip

Updated On 28th March, 2022

Whether you’re gone for 2 weeks or embarking on a 6-month road trip in the USA, driving across America is an unbelievable experience. From the USA national parks to the bustling cities, you can customize your trip to fit your personal adventure. If you’re wondering how to plan your USA coast to coast road trip, or looking for USA road trip top tips, this is the post for you.

You’ve heard aout it in books and drips… a road trip across the USA is a dream for many. On this USA road trip not only will you cross state borders, but you’ll experience different cultures, climates and landscapes too. It’s not all about ticking the experience off your bucket list, though… planning a USA road trip from coast to coast requires a lot of work!

For me it was a dream to drive from the East Coast to California, so when the opportunity presented itself, I packed my bags and hit the road! Starting September 1st, the car was packed, I had my camping clothes and for the next 3-months I would be living in my truck, taking in the vastness and wonder of America. Departing from the sleepy beach town of Cape Cod, MA, I embarked on my journey to California. This USA coast to coast trip entailed a lot of driving, coffee, adventure and discovery.

I’m going to use my experience to share my top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip, and help you plan your USA coast to coast road trip, so you’re more than ready to hit the road and enjoy the view!

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

USA coast to coast road trip: 10 top tips and things you need to know...

1. decide your route and where to start..

The first and most important part of your USA road trip is deciding your route. If you’re currently living in America, plan on starting from your hometown. If you’re living in a different country, plan on flying to a city with a big international hub. New York, Boston or Philadelphia are great places to start your trip on the East Coast, while Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland or Denver are great options for the West Coast.

2. Plan how long and when your USA coast to coast road trip will be.

How long you depend on being on the road determines how many places you will visit on your USA coast to coast road trip. I would always suggest staying at a location for 3-5 days, so you have time to relax and discover. It took me about 6 weeks to get from Massachusetts to California and I had 9 stops between locations. If you’re flexible with time, stop as much as you can. If you’re in a time crunch think about must-see destinations and plan accordingly.

If you’re wondering when the best time for a USA coast to coast road trip is, favourites are spring and fall. These times of year aren’t as hot, and are low season, so you tend to get better prices and fewer crowds.

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

3. Plan your stops and driving time.

One of my biggest top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip is knowing your comfort level of driving. I was traveling with 2 other people, and we all decided the longest we wanted to be in the car was 8 hours. So, when we planned our stops we calculated the distance we were willing to travel and how close we were to our desired location. Between switching drivers, resting and eating along the way, knowing your limits is very important. But let’s get to the fun part, planning your dream USA coast to coast road trip!

Make sure you also consider where you’re going to stop for petrol/gas on your road trip too, so that you don’t get stuck!

tour america coast to coast

4. Make sure you don't miss out on the best cities in the USA.

One of my favorite things to do while planning my trips is deciding on the activities and places to visit.

On my USA coast to coast road trip, apart from seeing the classic cities like San Francisco and Las Vegas, I was surprised by how much I truly loved Denver and exploring the small towns like Jackson Hole, WY. While the big city life is fun, when you visit a small town, you get a sense of old time American life. You get the feeling of that town’s history, the people and culture that surrounds you.

Cities and towns to visit on your USA coast to coast road trip:

  • New York City, NY
  • Boston, MA
  • New Orleans, LA
  • St. Augustine, FL
  • Chicago, IL
  • Jackson Hole, WY
  • Annapolis, MD
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Portland, OR
  • San Diego, CA
  • Santa Barbra, CA
  • San Francisco, CA

5. Make sure you visit some USA National Parks!

However, in my eyes, a USA coast to coast road trip isn’t complete unless you go to some of the USA National Parks . After living here for a few years, I personally believe this is the most important and beautiful part of seeing America. I spent about 2 weeks in Utah, and it has become my favorite state. Arches and Zion National Parks are breathtaking, and the scenery is captivating. With numerous hikes, bikes and adventure to be had you have options to see so much and experience new and momentaneous milestones.

The best USA National Parks to explore on your USA coast to coast road trip:

  • Canyonlands, Ut
  • Zion, Ut ( see our itinerary for Zion National Park here )
  • Brice Canyon, Ut
  • Grand Canyon, AZ
  • Yosemite, CA
  • Joshua Tree, CA
  • Sequoia, CA
  • Red Wood, CA
  • Grand Teton, WY
  • Yellowstone, WY, MT, ID
  • Rocky Mountain, CO
  • Glacier, MT

See our bucket list of 15 USA National Parks you must visit here.

6. Do your research for each destination.

Whether it’s activities, restaurants, must-see attractions or something else, doing the research before you embark on your USA coast to coast road trip is going to save you a lot of time and mental energy when you arrive at your destination! When you arrive, asking locals for any of their recommendations is also a winner too!

Get top tips on planning your next adventure here.

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

7. Book accommodation in advance and consider the cost/weather when planning your USA road trip.

I was fortunate enough to convert my truck into my home on wheels. If this is possible I highly recommend doing so, but this can be expensive. On average nightly accommodation came to about 40 dollars a night for a camping site. When planning your USA coast to coast road trip, make sure to look at peak and off peak seasons as the price can differ, and double check with weather conditions as many places close down for the winter season.

One of my top tips for a USA coast to coast road trip if you’re looking to save money is to try camping! While camping is a great option, weather and destinations sometimes make this harder than expected. If you choose to camp during your road trip, national parks , state parks, campgrounds and Hit Camp should be booked before arriving. When staying at state or national parks look at government recreation camping sites as they are cheaper. Camping is an affordable fun way to see America and, while it brings you back to basics, it’s adventurous and very affordable.

If you still want to stay in campgrounds and parks but want to elevate your accommodation look into renting a camper van. Outdoorsy and Escape Camper Vans are great options to rent for a road trip and still live the Nomad life on the road. There are some free camping zones, but that is something you need to search for by state.

Not a fan of camping? Do you want to live a little more luxurious during your road trip? As always, hotels can be booked and you can always look into an Air BnB .

If you’re camping (in a tent or a van) remember to leave no trace. Check out top tips for sustainable van life here.

How to plan your USA coast to coast road trip: top tips

8. Before you leave, make sure your vehicle is ready.

One of my top tips for planning your USA is to make sure your vehicle is ready for a road trip! You want to make sure that you’ve checked fluid levels, tyres, brake pads and more. Depending on what needs to be checked and how old your vehicle is, you might want to go to a mechanic or you might be able to do some of the checks yourself.

Make sure that you’ve got all the right vehicle / travel insurance too! And it’s definitely worth learning how to change a tyre yourself (if you don’t know already), so you don’t end up waiting for road side assistance for hours!

See our top tips for essential vehicle checks before a road trip here.

9. Get a paper map.

Depending on your USA coast to coast road trip itinerary, you might hit points where you don’t get good phone signal and you can’t rely on the GPS on your phone. Having a paper map will help!

10. USA coast to coast road trip itineraries...

Coast to coast usa.

By road or rail, there aren’t many bigger adventures than crossing the US coast to coast. It’s a journey of great diversity, through rolling forests, surreal desertscapes, rural towns bursting with Americana and city scenes played out in timeless movies.

Coast to Coast USA Road Trip

America is road trip country. There are several coast to coast routes you could follow, such as Interstate 20 from Oregon to Cape Cod and US Route 50 from San Francisco to Ocean City in Maryland, via Lake Tahoe and Washington D.C.

Our Travel Experts recommend not trying to drive too far each day, to give you time to enjoy the places you visit. Or, if time is really limited, consider flying some sections, so you still have a chance to experience the best of both coasts.

A couple of classic itineraries include:

  • America’s Route 66  – the world’s most famous road trip, from Chicago to Los Angeles, via Santa Fe, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon
  • Cities of America – Combining New York, Boston and Washington D.C. with New Orleans, L.A. and San Francisco

Whichever route you wish to take, our USA Specialists can help you plan your coast to coast road trip, finding the best rates for car or motorcycle hire and suggesting well placed hotels.

Alternatively, you could take your accommodation with you by hiring an American RV , giving you a little more flexibility in the distance to be covered each day.

Coast to Coast USA by Train

America’s Amtrak rail network criss-crosses the country, connecting iconic cities and traversing awe-inspiring landscapes. Travelling coach class offers a very economical way to explore the USA. Upgrading to a Bedroom or Roomette provides extra space and your own bed for overnight journeys.

Our USA rail holidays include train travel, hotels and activities. Two customer favourites are:

  • The All American – a 17 day rail holiday travelling coast to coast and back! From New York to San Francisco, first via New Orleans and back via Chicago
  • Great Southern Trail – an awe-inspiring journey from Los Angeles across Texas to New Orleans and Atlanta, then north to Washington D.C. and New York City

As with all our itineraries, you can add extra nights in any destination en route.

Plan Your USA Coast to Coast Holiday

By train, car, campervan or Harley Davidson, however you wish to travel the USA coast to coast, our North America Experts can help. Just get in touch.

Embark on a boat ride to the base of Niagara Falls

You have to see it to believe it, and we’ll take you up close to the mighty Niagara Falls, the biggest waterfall in North America. We’ll take you on a cruise to Horseshoe Falls where you can see both the American and Canadian sides, and watch over 680,000 gallons flow over the falls every second.

Visit Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco

Set on the scenic waterfront, Fisherman’s Wharf is filled with treasures. Stroll along Pier 39, sample fresh seafood like the famous Dungeness crab and clam chowder, watch the resident sea lion colony lounging on the docks, visit the quirky museums, or take a ride on the San Francisco Carousel.

Our top 5 things to do in the United States

Our USA tour packages will show you all the iconic highlights plus the unexpected gems, from the streets of New York to the vast depths of the Grand Canyon.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Known as ‘the Met’, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the world’s third most-visited art museum and the biggest art museum in the United States. Founded in 1870, the Met houses over two million works, from antique weapons and ancient Egyptian art, to European sculptural masterpieces and contemporary American art.

Art Institute of Chicago

Founded in 1879 in Chicago’s Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the United States. With a permanent collection of around 300,000 works, from Pablo Picasso’s The Old Guitarist to Grant Wood’s American Gothic, you can spend hours wandering the collections.

American Museum of Natural History

Located in Theodore Roosevelt Park across from Central Park in New York, the American Museum of Natural History is a massive display, with 45 exhibition halls, a planetarium and a library. The museum has over 33 million specimens, ranging from plants, animals, fossils and meteorites to human remains and cultural artefacts.

Best museums in the United States

When you tour the states with Trafalgar, we’ll show you the best museums and galleries across the country, from the famous ‘Met’ to the art of Chicago.

New York Bagels

Boiled then baked and fluffy yet dense, with a glossy, crunchy crust, the New York bagel has been perfected to an art. Our Local Specialists will take you to a 100-year old Jewish deli in the Upper West Side, where you can sample the best of these New York delicacies.

The American lobster is a species found on the Atlantic coast, with the state of Maine being the largest suppliers. The lobster is steamed or boiled and commonly served whole, and you’ll be given a lobster bib and a set of nutcrackers for your glorious lobster eating experience.

Beef Burger

A juicy beef patty, served with cheese, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and all the special sauces you could want for - burgers are the quintessential American dish. They’re big business in the United States, and we’ll show you where to find the best burgers in town.

Best food in the United States

With a blend of influences from the finest cuisines from all over the world, American food is absolutely yummy. We’ll show you our favourite places for a feast of classic burgers, bagels, peanut butter sandwiches, cakes and more.

What to pack for United States

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Comfortable shoes

From roaming the endless streets of New York, to exploring the Grand Canyon, you’ll need a sturdy pair of shoes on your adventures.

Dollar bills

Tipping is customary in the United States, and you’ll be expected to tip at least 15% (although 20 - 25% is appreciated), so be sure to keep some US bills on hand.

Big appetite

The United States is the land of the supersized, and their diverse cuisine comes in big portions with big flavour and plenty of soul.

Adaptor plug

In the United States, the standard voltage is 120 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 60 Hz.

Layered clothing

From the snowy east to the sunny west, the United States experiences a myriad of seasons and climates, so come prepared with layered and versatile clothing.

We leave London and fly to New York, where we spend two nights at the New York Marriott East Side Hotel.

Day 2 - Sightseeing In New York

Today, we enjoy a cruise around Manhattan Harbour, spotting landmarks from our unique vantage point on the water like Ellis Island and the torch-wielding icon, the Statue of Liberty. Later, we take a guided tour of the 'Big Apple', including Central Park, an open, leafy space set amongst the city's skyscrapers.

Day 3 : Days 3-4 - To Washington Dc

On Day 3 we take the train south to Washington, the nation's capital, where we spend two nights at the Kimpton Palomar Hotel located in the Dupont Circle district. Day 5 - To The Mid-West

We leave Washington late-afternoon on the Capitol Limited. The Capitol Limited service runs daily between Washington D.C. and Chicago, following the historic B&O line through the Potomac Valley. Our overnight journey takes us past historic Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains into Pittsburgh, before crossing into Ohio and heading north to Cleveland across Indiana and eventually into the centre of Chicago.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the passing scenery from the comfort of the Sightseer Lounge before moving to the dining car to enjoy dinner - included as part of your journey.

Day 5 : Days 6-8 - Overnight To Chicago And The Great Plains

We arrive in Chicago after breakfast on board the Capitol Limited. Here we spend the next two nights. On arrival in Chicago, we board a coach at the station for a city tour that revisits the 'dry and lawless years' of the 1920s and '30s. We take in the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre as well as Al Capone's headquarters, and some of the city's less infamous landmarks.

Your afternoon, and Day 7 , is free to explore Chicago. The Willis Tower - Chicago's equivalent of the Empire State Building - is a must-see and offers superb panoramas over the city, the lake and the landscapes beyond. The nearby Hancock Centre boasts similarly terrific views. Alternatively, you could venture down to Lake Michigan and enjoy a harbour cruise.

After a free morning on Day 8 , we board the California Zephyr for an overnight journey to Denver, which takes us across the cornfields and plains of Iowa and Nebraska. The Zephyr has a Sightseer Lounge and dinner is served in the train's dining car in the evening.

Day 6 : Days 9-10 - Denver And Rocky Mountain National Park

We arrive in Denver (nicknamed the 'Mile High City' as it is at an altitude of exactly one mile above sea level) early this morning, with breakfast served in the dining car. After our guided orientation drive on arrival, the rest of your day is at leisure to explore. Our home in Denver is the Hampton Inn & Suites Denver Downtown hotel .

On  Day 10  we enjoy a full-day excursion to exploring the Rocky Mountains. Renowned worldwide for their breathtaking scenery abundant in turquoise rivers, lush forests, majestic mountain vistas and wildlife including elk, black bears, coyotes, eagles and hawks, these parks are the jewel in Colorado's crown.

Day 7 : Days 11-12 - Heritage American Rail

Today we embark on one of the USA's most scenic rail journeys along the route of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Our journey takes us up into the Rocky Mountains, past dramatic peaks and deep ravines to the city of Grand Junction, in the heart of Colorado's wine region, where we enjoy an overnight stay.

On Day 12 , we transfer to Silverton, for a journey on the Durango & Silverton Railroad, travelling through breathtaking canyons, past emerald-green rivers, across the remote wilderness of the National Forest, to Durango, where we spend the night at the Holiday Inn & Suites Durango Central.

Day 8 : Days 13-14 - Monument Valley, Flagstaff And The Grand Canyon

Familiar from a hundred westerns, the rugged landscape of Monument Valley is one of America's defining images, which we discover today as we pass through en-route to Flagstaff. We head along legendary Route 66 to the town of Williams on Day 14 , where we join the Grand Canyon Railway. Travel in carriages hauled by historic locomotives to the Grand Canyon, to see one of the world's most aweinspiring sights.

The canyon, created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. We arrive at the South Rim and main viewpoint of the Canyon with plenty of time to enjoy the views.

Day 9 : Days 15-17 - Las Vegas, Los Angeles, And The Coast Starlight

Today, we journey to fabulous Las Vegas, where your afternoon is at leisure to properly enjoy 'Sin City' itself. Grand Rail Experience

5 stops: los angeles to washington dc to los angeles.

With a country as scenic as the US, sometimes doing the cross-country trek once just isn’t enough. Fortunately, cross-country Amtrak routes like the Grand Rail Experience go from coast to coast not just once, but twice.

Starting in Southern California, the eastward part of this cross-country rail trail stays along the southern portion of the country, stopping in New Orleans, Louisiana for two days. This leaves ample time to enjoy the best restaurants in New Orleans , as well as the variety of museums and historical landmarks that can be found throughout this cultural hub.

Hopping back on the train for another overnight stay, the Grand Rail Experience moves north to the East Coast hub and US capital, Washington DC. There are a number of budget-friendly ways to enjoy Washington DC while stopping in this city, including going to the Smithsonian National Zoo and various national monuments, which is fortunate, as this is only the halfway point of this double cross-country adventure.

Heading back towards the West Coast, this cross-country Amtrak train ride takes two days in Chicago, Illinois before reaching the coast, this time in Seattle, Washington. Unique among even Amtrak trails, this route ends back where it began, with the final night being an overnight trek back to Los Angeles in California.

About The Grand Rail Experience

Grand National Parks Loop

9 stops: washington dc to san francisco to washington dc.

National parks are some of the most popular outdoor destinations in the US. When taking one of the many amazing US national park road trips isn’t an option, hopping on the cross-country Grand National Parks Loop may be the perfect solution.

There are several variations of the National Park loops, offering longer and shorter versions of the same basic route. Regardless of time, however, there is no doubt that this cross-country train ride is the trip of a lifetime.

Starting in Washington DC, travelers will visit Yellowstone National Park on their way to the West Coast, and Yosemite National Park and Grand Canyon National Park on their return to DC.

If time in three of the most scenic national parks in the country wasn’t enough, additional stops in Chicago, Illinois, Salt Lake City, Utah, San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, and Williams, Arizona, ensure that there will be plenty of time to enjoy both natural wonders and thriving big cities on this two-week trip.

About The Grand National Parks Loop

  • Cost: from $5,199/person

Want a different take on this cross-country train ride? Amtrak offers a similar national park loop that starts in New York City and goes north instead of south, swapping Grand Canyon National Park for Glacier National Park. The Grand National Parks with Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier National Park Roundtrip from New York City lasts 17 days and starts at $6,949 a person.

As beautiful as the sights are from the window, there are still enough stops on this cross-country Amtrak ride to enjoy some time on foot. Perhaps the biggest scenic standout of this train ride is Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

West Coast To East Coast Rail Experience

4 stops: san francisco to washington dc.

Just because these scenic American trains are cross-country Amtrak train routes doesn’t mean there isn’t still time to explore the coastline itself. In fact, the simple West Coast to East Coast Rail experience is a cross-country train ride that recognizes the beauty of its starting point.

Starting in San Francisco, the first two days of this train ride don’t involve any overnight travel. Instead, hop-on/hop-off tours of San Francisco, Muir Woods, and Sausalito fill the agenda, giving plenty of time to stretch those legs before the longer train journeys begin.

Before heading for the East Coast, this train ride takes a sharp northward turn, heading for Seattle, a popular long-distance Amtrak hub. Here, travelers can walk the streets, visit museums, and take advantage of the many free things to do in Seattle before strapping in for a two-day Amtrak ride toward Chicago.

As a true cross-country train ride, this Amtrak route has one more overnight as it takes passengers from Chicago to Washington DC, where they can explore monuments, visit museums, and enjoy a night in one of the many unique boutique Washington DC hotels before making their way back home.

4 stops: washington dc to los angeles.

When planning a driving route across the US, most travelers find themselves looking for the most direct way to get from point to point. One of the main advantages of opting for an Amtrak cross-country train ride instead is that passengers can opt for a more winding, scenic route to their destination, without having to worry about the map.

In the spirit of scenic detours, the Southern Rails cross-country Amtrak train ride heads from Washington DC to Los Angeles by way of the southern border. Dropping all the way down to New Orleans, travelers will have three full days to explore this colorful corner of the Deep South.

Having wandered one of the best American cities for museums , this Amtrak route sticks tight to the southern line, stopping in San Antonio, Texas for an additional three days. That means exploring the best local barbeque joints, strolling down the historic main streets, and relaxing in one of the oldest public parks in the US before heading back on the train for a scenic journey through red rock country on the way to Los Angeles.

Unlike many cross-country train rides, this Amtrak route does not stop in New York City. Instead, the journey simply stops for a day before continuing on to a second East Coast destination, Boston, Massachusetts. Here, on the last stop of the vacation, guests can wander some of the many beautiful streets in Boston , take in one-of-a-kind museums, and revel in the historical landmarks of this unique city.

The All-American

6 stops: chicago, illinois loop to new york city and los angeles.

It can be hard to narrow down the biggest “can’t-miss” stops in a country as large as the United States, but Amtrak has managed to create the All-American tour, which runs through a number of the top tourist destinations in the US in one two-week escapade. While the All-American Amtrak route is a cross-country adventure, this train ride neither starts nor ends at the coast. Instead, this train route forms a loop around Chicago, Illinois, before moving east to New York City.

New York is just the first of the big-city stops on this cross-country train ride. From here, things move south to New Orleans, before finally turning west for the other coastline. After a night on the train, visitors arrive in Los Angeles, California. While there is no time saved to explore LA itself, the scenic train ride through the Southwestern states, full of cacti, red rock formations, and unusual wildlife, is sure to mesmerize even the most restless of guests.

Despite having visited both coasts at this point, the cross-country adventure is still going strong. Additional stops in San Francisco, Denver, and Rocky Mountain National Park round out the A-list itinerary before dropping passengers off back at the starting point in Chicago.

About The All-American Route

  • Cost: from $4,299/person
  • Trip Outline: Chicago, IL → New York City, NY → New Orleans, LA → Los Angeles, CA → San Francisco, CA → Denver, CO → Rocky Mountain National Park, CO → Chicago, IL

Frequently asked questions.

When planning your itinerary for the East Coast of America, it's important to consider your interests, the time you have available, and the distance between cities and attractions. Start by researching the major cities and landmarks along the coast, such as New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, and Miami. Make a list of the places you'd like to see and allocate an appropriate amount of time for each location. Consider the transportation options available, such as renting a car, taking a train, or utilizing public transportation. It's also essential to account for travel time and any necessary reservations or tickets for specific attractions.

The East Coast of America boasts numerous must-see attractions. Some popular options include Times Square and Central Park in New York City, the National Mall and museums in Washington D.C., the historical sites in Boston, the beaches and nightlife in Miami, and the theme parks in Orlando. Other notable attractions include the historic districts in Charleston, the colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, the lighthouses along the coast of Maine, and the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. These are just a few examples, and there are many more attractions to explore along the East Coast.

Traveling the East Coast of America can be expensive, but there are ways to save money. Start by researching and comparing prices for accommodations, flights, and transportation options. Consider staying in budget-friendly accommodations such as hostels, budget hotels, or vacation rentals. Look for deals and discounts on attractions, museums, and activities, and consider visiting during the off-peak season when prices are typically lower. Save on food expenses by eating at local eateries or markets instead of expensive restaurants, and consider packing some snacks for long travel days. Lastly, consider using public transportation or walking instead of expensive taxis or car rentals when exploring cities.

It is generally recommended to book accommodations in advance when traveling the East Coast of America. This is especially true during peak tourist seasons, major holidays, or when there are special events happening in the cities you plan to visit. Booking in advance allows you to secure the best prices and ensures that you have a place to stay. However, if you prefer flexibility or are traveling during the off-peak season, you may be able to find last-minute deals or book accommodations on the go. Keep in mind that this approach may limit your options, particularly in popular tourist destinations.

The best time to travel the East Coast of America depends on personal preferences and the activities you plan to engage in. Summers (June to August) are popular due to warm weather, but they can also be crowded and more expensive. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) offer milder temperatures, fewer tourists, and lower prices. Winter (December to February) is a quieter time to visit, but some attractions, especially outdoor sites, may have reduced hours or be closed. When deciding on the best time, consider your desired activities, budget, and tolerance for crowds, and research seasonal events or festivals that may interest you.

West Marin County, home to some of California's most beautiful beaches and most expensive homes, is putting a cap on short-term rentals. Proponents of the cap say Airbnbs have ruined small towns, eating valuable housing stock and making it devoid of actual locals. Opponents say it's so expensive anyway that a vacation rental ban doesn't add affordable housing. Cicada map 2024: See where to find Brood XIX and XIII − and where they've already been spotted

tour america coast to coast

For many Americans, the cicadas are here .

Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.

Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.

So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.

Are cicadas dangerous? Busting myths on the harmfulness of the noisy pests.

Are cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas  are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

This year marks the 36th edition of this annual event. The theme is "Fleet Week New York...Celebrating Those Who Serve."

The fleet will be in town through next Tuesday, the day after Memorial Day, offering ship tours, aviation demonstrations, military band performances, and interactive displays.

"Fleet Week is about celebrating those who serve and recognizing the unyielding strength of our Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard team," said Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall in a statement on the official Fleet Week website . "As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life."

Here are the ships participating this year:
