Box Office: ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ Delivers Biggest December Opening In History

Despite being the latest entry in a well-loved Oscar-winning series with a billion-dollar final installment, expectations were tempered for “ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey .” Unlike the previous trilogy, reviews were a bit more mixed this time around, and some fans wondered if a trilogy was really necessary from the comparatively thin source material. The nerdcore and critics were particularly vocal about the film’s 48 fps format (though it was only featured at 461 of the film’s engagements, a fraction of screens). But even with those hurdles, Peter Jackson ‘s latest foray into Middle Earth collected $84.8 million, the biggest opening weekend in December history, easily topping the $73 million ‘ Return Of The King ‘ grabbed in 2004.

Even if this bests the $77 million that “ I Am Legend ” grossed as the original highest December opening, the caveats lie in the fact that some pundits forecasted a nine figure showing for the first three days of “The Hobbit.” Coming off the heels of a billion-dollar franchise, the higher numbers feel more like the result of eight years of inflation plus 3D-enhanced prices than a vote for this continuation of the series. Even with robust openings, the ‘ Lord Of The Rings ‘ films registered outstanding legs due to extensive critical support and audience approval. While the picture generated an “A” Cinemascore, that might be due to the diehard audiences reporting with mandatory geek allegiance. With the film thus far being completely ignored by critics and awards guilds, it’s uncertain as to whether the casual audience members will visit the Shire in the film’s second and third weekend after a sharp downturn in business from Friday to Saturday.

‘The Hobbit’ could still comfortably be over $200 million domestic by the time it’s registering sold-out crowds on Christmas, of course. And worldwide, the picture should be even stronger than the last film, with phenomenal international results suggestiing a possible $200 million global tally at the end of Sunday. Warner Bros. is clearly benefitting from a stronger worldwide film economy, but domestically, it does seem as if the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ audience hasn’t necessarily grown all that much in the last eight years, even for a well-loved series that had a massive second life on DVD. It barely affects the bottom line, though: this has no effect on the release of the next two ‘Hobbit’ films, and all three look like they’ll be billion-dollar entries.

Six weekends of release, and “ Lincoln ” has now crossed $100 million, while remaining the third biggest theatrical option in the nation. Audience response has allowed “Lincoln” to be a massive draw for adults in a year that saw strong receptions for serious studio fare aimed at discerning audiences. In the wake of the film’s strong Golden Globes showing, “Lincoln” had the best audience retention numbers of any wide release in the top ten and could easily play through Christmas to older families getting together for the holidays. Fear the beard, folks.

Very little separates “Lincoln,” “ Skyfall ” and “ Rise Of The Guardians ” this week, aside from the fact that one of those films is looked at as an embarrassment to the studio. ‘Guardians’ is barely saving face as the top kiddie attraction this season, having been thrown under the bus by a studio openly admitting the results should have been stronger. A “ Monsters Inc. ” 3D re-release is slated for next week, but there’s no reason ‘Guardians’ shouldn’t continue to play into the New Year and hit $100 million, small relief for a pricey picture that’s also pulling in poor worldwide numbers. Meanwhile, “Skyfall” — what more can be said? We’re looking at the first billion-dollar beast of a Bond movie. Everything beyond this point is one juicy cherry on top after another.

“ Life Of Pi ” is producing modest domestic numbers, and after a surprising first frame, interest has chilled considerably. The picture doesn’t look like it will make it to $100 million stateside, though it’s easily surpassed that benchmark overseas, with several major territories yet to receive the film. There’s more than enough evidence to suggest “Life Of Pi” could do more than twice its U.S. numbers in other regions. Right behind is “ The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 ,” which has enough juice to pass the first ‘Breaking Dawn’ entry in America, though it has easily become the biggest overall hit in this franchise thanks to international audiences. In other news — five movies later, a lot of people still watch “ Twilight .” Insert depressing, condescending snark here.

The rest of the top ten is simply playing out the string. “ Playing For Keeps ” never had a chance, “ Wreck-It Ralph ” has nearly bled out all its 3D screens, and “ Red Dawn ” is about ready to take a knee. Still clinging on to the bottom of the top ten is “ Silver Linings Playbook ,” which dropped only 4% while retaining it’s 371 theater count. The film’s not-insignificant legs, combined with the increasing awards presence, suggests we could be very close to a slow, solid expansion for the film. The Weinstein Company continue to play it close to the vest with this film, but don’t be surprised if there’s a slight box office breakout on the horizon.

It was a quiet weekend for the arthouse, with “ Hyde Park On Hudson ” generating a decent $207k in its second weekend, averaging $8k per-location. It was more formidable than “ Hitchcock ,” which had an expansion into 561 theaters, but generated only slightly under $1.1 million with a feeble per-screen of less than $2k. The strongest indie performer has to be “ Rust And Bone ,” which averaged $9k in its fourth week of release on only six screens for a solid $56k and a total of $207k. The week’s lone debut was a quiet one for “ Any Day Now ” at $41k at sixteen locations. Support your local arthouse theater, boys and girls.

1. Peter Jackson’s Innocuous Good-Time ATM Machine (WB) – $90 million 2. Rise Of The Guardians Of Ga’Hoole (DreamWorks) – $7.4 million ($71.4 mil.) 3. Lincoln (Disney) – $7.2 million ($107.9 mil.) 4. Skyfall (Sony) – $7 million ($272.4 mil.) 5. Life Of Pi (Fox) – $5.4 million ($69.6 mil.) 6. The Bla Bla Saga: Bla Bla Part Blergh (Summit) – $5.1 million ($276.8 mil.) 7. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" crosses $1 billion mark at worldwide box office

By Jessica Derschowitz

March 4, 2013 / 3:30 PM EST / CBS News

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" has reached a major box office milestone.

The Peter Jackson film crossed the $1 billion mark over the weekend, becoming the 15th film to ever reach the figure in global ticket sales.

an unexpected journey box office

It's the second time a Jackson film has crossed the billion-dollar threshold -- his first film to do it was "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King." The top three films on the list are "Avatar," "Titanic" and "The Avengers."

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" has grossed $301.1 million domestically to date, according to The Hollywood Reporter , and just under $700 million worldwide.

In a statement announcing the news Sunday, Warner Bros. president of international distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg said: "From Berlin to Beijing, it is so gratifying to see how the release of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' has been such an event with audiences around the world. It's an exciting bellwether as we move toward the release of the second film in the trilogy."

That second film, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" is scheduled to be released on Dec. 13, while the final installment, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," will arrive December 2014 .

The Hobbit journeys to top of UK box office

Peter Jackson and JRR Tolkien have consistently proved a potent combination at the box office, so it's no surprise to see audiences turning up in droves for the first of three films based on The Hobbit. However a haul of £11.60m in four days is far from record-breaking, and isn't even the biggest opening of 2012. Skyfall debuted in late October with £20.18m, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 followed a month later with £15.85m. Both titles achieved these sums in three days with no previews, as did The Dark Knight Rises when it opened in July with £14.36m. Marvel Avengers Assemble kicked off with £15.78m over its initial four days. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has thus only achieved the fifth-best opening of the year.

The result for this latest Tolkien adaptation compares favorably with 2001's Fellowship of the Ring , which began its run with £11.06m from five days. The Two Towers followed a year later with a £13.06m opening, also from five days. And then The Return of the King rounded out the trilogy in 2003, debuting with £15.02m, another five-day figure. Considering ticket price inflation in the past decade, and the premium for 3D, initial admissions for The Hobbit are clearly down on all Jackson's previous Tolkien movies. Backers Warners will be hoping that this more family-skewing tale will prove potent throughout the school holiday this Christmas, and that the best is yet to come.

The festive battle heats up

DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians predictably drops from the top spot, clobbered by The Hobbit, but its box-office decline from the previous weekend is a relatively slender 22%. Its £5.71m gross so far compares with DWA's Puss in Boots ' £6.64m at the same stage of its run last year. Experiencing a sensational hold is Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger !, moving back up two notches in the chart to third place, with a box-office drop of just 3%. The primary-school-set comedy sequel has achieved £5.58m so far, and backers eOne will be hoping for further rich pay days from now up until Christmas Eve. Both Rise and Nativity 2 shrugged off the challenge from Disney's Tinkerbell and the Secret of the Wings , which opened with £529,000 from 383 cinemas. Families with young girls will continue to check out the fairy animation throughout the holiday period. Arthur Christmas , pushed back into 282 cinemas on Saturday and Sunday, added another £98,000 to its tally for a £21.1m total.

The hot streak continues

Thanks to the arrival of The Hobbit, the market is unsurprisingly up on the equivalent weekend from last year, when Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipwrecks: Chipwrecked landed in the top two spots. This extends to nine consecutive frames the run of success where grosses have been up on 2011 comparables. Cinemas have never had it so good.

The big fallers

With The Hobbit and festive-themed films sucking up audiences, many titles experienced big drops, notably Great Expectations (in 10th place), End of Watch (14th) and Sightseers (15th), down 71%, 70% and 73% respectively. Lower down the chart, other titles are plummeting even faster. Miley Cyrus vehicle So Undercover fell 75%, Alex Cross dropped 83% while Hugh Laurie comedy The Oranges collapsed by 86%. With more major new releases arriving for Christmas, all these films face tough challenges holding on to their remaining sites.

The arthouse battle

While numerous tiny new releases failed to make much impression on the market (see "Other openers", below), awards contenders Silver Linings Playbook and Argo continue to hang in there, and Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths (down 45%) straddles the multiplex-indie cinema divide. Upscale audiences were also wooed by alternative content, notably the New York Met Opera's satellite-relayed live presentation of Aida on Saturday (grosses rumoured to be in the £250,000 ball park), and rival encore showings of the The Nutcracker from both the Royal Ballet and the Bolshoi on Sunday. Apart from Bollywood titles such as Talaash (£839,000 after three weeks), Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt is the top foreign language film in the market, just ahead of Michael Haneke's Amour.

This coming weekend, cinemas can look with confidence for grosses to be up on 2011 for a tenth frame on the trot, based on a decent hold for The Hobbit, and the arrival of two films with potential for significant commercial appeal. Ang Lee's Life of Pi has already grossed $70m in the US, on its way to what could be a significantly bigger total if awards nominations sustain it into January and February. Meanwhile, the a cappella-powered campus comedy Pitch Perfect has reached $64m, and will now be hoping to capitalize on a dearth of female skewing-titles for teens and above in UK cinemas. Jack Reacher , based on ninth novel One Shot in the Lee Child series, and starring Tom Cruise as the eponymous crimefighting drifter, follows on Boxing Day.

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ on Track to Break Box Office Records

Though Peter Jackson 's ' The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ' hit screens mere hours ago, it's already on track to have the highest opening weekend of any picture to open in December. That's right, it's on track to open bigger than 'Avatar.'

Currently, the record for a December opening weekend is held by 'I am Legend,' which opened to $77.2 million in 2007 ('Avatar' was just behind it with $77 million). From what Variety tells us, the picture will do around $85 million after doing $13 Million in midnight business, and with an estimated $36 Million for the Friday. Even if they're a little off, it looks like it should take the record.

Unfortunately, it seems likely that having the highest opening weekend in December is the only record the film will break. ' The Avengers ' will hold steady with the highest opening weekend of all time ($207 million), while it seems unlikely that 'The Hobbit' will clear either the $760 million domestic or the $2.7 billion worldwide grosses of 'Avatar' based on the numbers of previous 'Lord of the Rings' films.

That said, 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' is opening in one of the sweetest opening weekend spots for any picture. With a December 14 release date, it means that much of the next three weeks will be holiday weekends, which usually means more people going to the movies, and usually causes films to hold steady in their business, or have smaller percentage drops than normal. The question is if the issues that critics have been having with the film (most of the positve reviews come concede that the film is too long) are problems that will keep audiences from repeat viewings, or perhaps even going. We shall see, but for now, the film is off to a record-breaking start.

The Hobbit Box Office: Blockbuster or Underperformer?

The Hobbit Gollum Andy Serkis: An Unexpected Journey blockbuster or box office disappointment?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey box office: Domestic blockbuster or disappointment? Both?

Ramon Novarro Beyond Paradise

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , the first movie in Peter Jackson’s trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s (relatively short) 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit , opened with a disappointing $84.6 million at the North American box office this past weekend, Dec. 14–16.

But how can one say that nearly $85 million over the course of one December 2012 weekend is a disappointing figure?

Well, as late as Friday afternoon, matinee attendance numbers indicated that the Warner Bros.-released, $150 million-budget (not including marketing and distribution expenses) prequel to Jackson’s immensely successful The Lord of the Rings movies would collect up to $115 million in the U.S. and Canada. Yet the The Hobbit ended up grossing about $30 million less.

Record-breaking hobbit?

Oh, but The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey did at least break all sorts of domestic December box office records, right?

Well, yes, if you live on a planet where inflation is unheard of.

Although it’s true that The Hobbit easily holds the December midnight record – $13 million (at 3,100 midnight venues) vs. the $3.5 million earned by the James Cameron - Sam Worthington collaboration Avatar at 2,000 sites three years ago – once inflation is factored in, Peter Jackson’s latest failed to surpass the opening weekend take of Will Smith’s I Am Legend and of both The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King . That, despite showings at a record-breaking (for December) 4,045 locations.

  • The Audition 2015: Martin Scorsese Short Starring DiCaprio
  • Zac Efron + Robert Pattinson: The Oscars

As found at boxofficemojo.com :

  • I Am Legend grossed $77.2 million in December 2007 (approximately $89 million today) at 3,606 locations.
  • The Two Towers raked in $62 million in 2002 (approx. $88 million today) from 3,622 sites.
  • The Return of the King scored $72.62 million in 2003 (approx. $95 million today) from 3,703 sites.

It should be noted that with $37.5 million earned on opening day (including the record-breaking midnight screenings), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also trailed The Return of the King : $34.5 million in 2003, or an inflation-adjusted $45.5 million.

And let’s not forget that the final The Lord of the Rings movie opened on a Wednesday.

The Lord of the Rings movies

For the record, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring took in $47.21 million (approx. $66 million today) on its first weekend out at 3,359 locations in December 2001.

Ah, minor detail: none of the Lord of the Rings movies was screened in ticket-price-inflating 3D.

Another minor detail: back in the early 2000s, ticket-price-inflating IMAX screenings were quite rare.

So keep in mind that 49 percent of The Hobbit ‘s domestic weekend gross came from 3D screenings.

Shot concurrently in New Zealand, the Lord of the Rings movies were budgeted at a reported $280 million or whereabouts; that’s approximately $94 million per movie. Adjusted for inflation (based on U.S. Department of Labor statistics), each The Lord of the Rings movie cost circa $125 million in 2012 dollars vs. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ‘s $150 million price tag (a reported $450 million for the trilogy).

Leaving inflation aside, The Fellowship of the Ring cumed at $315 million in North America. The Two Towers at $342.6 million. The Return of the King at $377.8 million.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey finally passes $200 million domestic cume January 2013 update: Peter Jackson’s $150 million-budget The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – finally – passed the $200 million milestone at the North American box office on Dec. 28. Its cume stands at $200.32 million on Day 15. For comparison’s sake: Not adjusted for inflation and without the advantage of box-office-inflating 3D surcharges, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King reached $200 million on Day 11; The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on Day 12; and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on Day 19.

International market to the rescue

Here’s one major box office silver lining for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey : more than 60 percent of the Lord of the Rings movies’ worldwide gross originated outside the U.S. and Canada.

The latest Middle-earth franchise will in all likelihood follow the same path, especially considering that two of Hollywood’s current top markets, China and Russia, were relatively small a mere ten years ago. Moreover, box office grosses have markedly increased in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, and South Korea.

In fact, in the last five days The Hobbit pulled in an estimated $138.2 million in 56 territories, or about 62 percent of the film’s current $223 million worldwide total.

$1.5 million or so per The Hobbit page

And that’s not all. Worldwide box office or no, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will likely make a huge chunk of its total gross not from movie theaters, but from movie toys, videogames, and other merchandising.

That’s a key reason why studios are willing to shell out half a billion dollars (or more) making a nine-hour or so movie trilogy based on a 95,000-word book. That’s about $4,750 per word.

Check out: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 trailing only The Avengers in Brazil.

Why did The Hobbit open lower than expected at the domestic box office?

Question: why did The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey open more modestly than expected on the North American front?

Well, possibilities – and those are mere possibilities – range from the still-sluggish U.S. economy to generally unenthusiastic reviews, which may have discouraged non-Middle-earth aficionados from checking out the film.

The Hobbit , in fact, has a mediocre 42 percent approval rating and a 6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes ‘ top critics. For comparison’s sake: the “worst-reviewed” Lord of the Rings movie, The Fellowship of the Ring , has a 92 percent approval rating and 7.9/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes’ top critics.

In addition, The Hobbit ‘s three-hour running time may have been a deterrent to others, while the highly negative buzz surrounding Jackson’s 48 frames-per-second innovation may have turned off others yet.

But how come internationally…?

Well, just bear in mind that no matter how rotten, 3D movies almost invariably fare much better outside the U.S. and Canada.

Prequel or first installment in new franchise?

And finally, there’s nearly a decade-long gap between The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey . So perhaps the latter should be seen less as a prequel to the previously released sequels (get it?), and more like the first installment of a new(ish) movie franchise. First installments, of course, are usually less popular than branded sequels.

Anyhow, here’s another silver lining: North American moviegoers have given The Hobbit an “A” CinemaScore, which may help with word of mouth.

Animal lovers, however, may feel otherwise. As per several highly disturbing claims, a number of animals died during the making of the three Hobbit movies.

The Hobbit movie cast

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey features the following:

Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Lee Pace, Hugo Weaving, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, Stephen Hunter, James Nesbitt, Aidan Turner, Bret McKenzie, Jed Brophy, Mikael Persbrandt, Barry Humphries, Elijah Wood.

Also: Veteran Christopher Lee ( The Face of Fu Manchu , She ), Oscar winner Cate Blanchett ( The Aviator , 2004), and nominees Ian Holm ( Chariots of Fire , 1981) and Ian McKellen ( Gods and Monsters , 1998; The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , 2001).

J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel was adapted by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, and Guillermo del Toro – who had previously been touted as the director of The Hobbit before abandoning the project in 2010.

A New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer co-production, The Hobbit was released by New Line’s sister company, Warner Bros., itself part of the Time Warner conglomerate.

Les Misérables & Django Unchained overperform on Christmas Day

Dec. 26 update (followed by January 2013 update with box office actuals): In late December 2012 box office news, the film version of the international stage hit Les Misérables opened strongly on Christmas Day in the domestic market – $18.11 million at 2,808 locations – far surpassing distributor Universal’s (official) expectations of around $10 million.

True, studios tend to underestimate the opening-weekend (or opening-day) grosses of their films – for obvious reasons – but this is a bit much. It just remains to be seen whether such an impressive performance for a nearly three-hour musical will hold in the coming days, as pre-sales accounted for a major percentage of the tickets sold on Dec. 25.

As a domestic box office plus, Quentin Tarantino’s violent Django Unchained , starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and Jamie Foxx, opened with better than expected figures. The R-rated Western/slavery tale scored $15.01 million at 3,010 venues – a Christmas Day record for an R-rated release.

Controversies regarding Django Unchained ‘s violence and expletive-/slur-filled language have spurred interest in Tarantino’s film – Spike Lee sure has done his bit – much like the torture controversy helped to propel Kathryn Bigelow ’s thriller Zero Dark Thirty to unexpected box office heights (in limited release) last week.

Good news for The Weinstein Company

The success of Django Unchained is good news for The Weinstein Company, which has suffered a series of flops/disappointments in recent weeks (box office cumes as of Dec. 23):

  • Paul Thomas Anderson’s well-received The Master , with $15.93 million in spite of a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams .
  • The Andrew Dominik- Brad Pitt bomb Killing Them Softly , with $14.73 million. Dominik’s crime drama had the worst domestic debut ever of any Brad Pitt movie in wide release.
  • To a lesser extent, David O. Russell ’s Silver Linings Playbook , with $19.86 million. ( Update: Thanks to plenty of awards season/Oscar buzz & wins, Silver Linings Playbook , toplining Bradley Cooper , Jennifer Lawrence , Robert De Niro , and Jacki Weaver, ultimately grossed a solid $132.09 million in the U.S. and Canada.)

Django Unchained Leonardo DiCaprio: Plantation owner possessed by Jack Nicholson in The Shining

Les Misérables & Django Unchained cast

Directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper ( The King’s Speech , 2010), Les Misérables features Hugh Jackman, Oscar winner Russell Crowe ( Gladiator , 2000), and Oscar nominees Anne Hathaway ( Rachel Getting Married , 2008) and Helena Bonham Carter ( The Wings of the Dove , 1997; The King’s Speech , 2010), in addition to Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Aaron Tveit, and Samantha Barks.

Based on Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Jean-Marc Natel’s 1980 stage musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel, the Les Misérables screenplay is credited to Boublil, Schönberg, Herbert Kretzmer (who provided the English-language libretto/lyrics for the stage musical), and two-time Oscar nominee William Nicholson ( Shadowlands , 1993; Gladiator ).

Check out: Early Les Misérables reviews .

Besides Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and Jamie Foxx, Django Unchained also features Kerry Washington, Dennis Christopher, Don Johnson, Amber Tamblyn, James Remar, Walton Goggins, David Steen, James Russo, Jonah Hill, veteran Franco Nero ( Camelot , A Quiet Place in the Country ), and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominees Russ Tamblyn ( Peyton Place , 1957), Bruce Dern ( Coming Home , 1978), and Samuel L. Jackson ( Pulp Fiction , 1994).

Christopher Lee’s other Saruman-like character

[1] Besides Peter Jackson’s two Middle-earth trilogies, Christopher Lee has also left his mark on another iconic – and seemingly endless – movie franchise: he was seen as Count Dooku – like Saruman, an embodiment of power lust depravity – in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).

Non-franchise Christopher Lee movies include The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), She (1965), The Wicker Man (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and, more recently, Sleepy Hollow (1999) and The Golden Compass (2007).

‘the fall guy’ to kick off summer box office after a brutal late spring, eyes $30m-$35m opening.

For years, a superhero pic marked the start of the summer moviegoing season but that all changed with the pandemic and Hollywood's historic labor strikes.

Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in THE FALL GUY

David Leitch’s action-comedy The Fall Guy isn’t the normal kind of stunt Hollywood usually relies on to herald the start of the summer box office , but these aren’t normal times.

Related Stories

'the fall guy': five ways in which the movie references the original series, box office: 'the fall guy' lands with $28.5m, 'phantom menace' tops 'challengers' for no. 2.

From Universal, The Fall Guy has plenty of star power. The film stars Ryan Gosling of Barbie fame as a burned-out stuntman who comes out of self-imposed exile to help save a Hollywood movie that’s being helmed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Oppenheimer ‘s Emily Blunt . All sorts of mayhem ensues when the movie’s leading man disappears from set in Australia.

Hannah Waddingham, Aaron Taylor-Johnson , Winston Duke and Stephanie Hsu co-star in the film, which currently boasts an 87 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Fall Guy — inspired by the 1980s TV show of the same name starring Lee Majors — is tracking to open in the $30 million to $35 million range, enough to top the weekend chart. The action comedy’s net budget is a reported $130 million, so it will need long legs to recoup its budget. In 2022, the action comedy The Lost City , starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, turned into a sleeper hit and played for weeks, on its way to $192.9 million globally.

It’s already begun rolling out overseas, earning a somewhat subdued $8.4 million to date from 38 markets. The bigger test comes this weekend when it opens in an additional 40 markets.

The box office has been saturated with male-driven fare in recent weeks, and The Fall Guy should benefit from appealing to females as well. THR ‘s review says Gosling and Blunt “sparkle in this action comedy with heart,” and that is the “rare big studio film that feels human.”

Year-over-year comparisons for the weekend will be bleak because of Guardians 3 , but studios and theater owners are hopeful that the summer slate — including Deadpool & Wolverin e (July 26) and Inside Out 2 (June 14) — will help collectively make ground after a dismal late spring.

At the moment, domestic revenue year to date is running 21 percent behind 2023, when summer revenue cleared $4 billion thanks primarily to the Barbenheimer phenomenon. This summer — defined as the first weekend in May through Labor Day — is hoping is hoping to get to $3.2 billion, but there is little chance it gets to $4 billion.

Box Office: ‘The Fall Guy’ Kicks Off Summer Movie Season With Disappointing $28 Million Debut

Emily Blunt is Judy Moreno in THE FALL GUY, directed by David Leitch

“ The Fall Guy ,” an action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, kicked off the summer movie season without much sizzle.

The film, backed by Universal and directed by David Leitch, fell just short of expectations with $28.5 million from 4,002 North American venues in its debut. Heading into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” was projected to earn at least $30 million to $40 million. The trouble is that the movie cost $140 million to produce, so it needs strong word of mouth and interest at the international box office to recoup its budget during its theatrical run. “The Fall Guy” opened to $25.4 million overseas, bringing its global total to $65.4 million.

Popular on Variety

There’s hope that “The Fall Guy” can stick around over the coming weeks… and that’s because Leitch’s prior film, 2022’s Brad Pitt-led assassin thriller “Bullet Train,” overcame similar box office odds. The $90 million-budgeted movie started slow with $30 million in August and legged out to $130 million domestically and $239 million globally.

Also, audiences and critics are digging the film, which landed an “A-” CinemaScore and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. “The Fall Guy” sees Gosling as a former stuntman who tries to track down a missing movie star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) so he can salvage a big studio movie, which is being directed by his ex-girlfriend (Blunt).

“We are incredibly proud of this film,” says Universal’s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr. “It’s an exciting, charming film that I have no doubt will have a robust run.”

“For over a decade and a half, a Marvel movie provided the spark to ignite the summer movie season,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “This year, without such a blockbuster title, apples-to-apples comparisons to the same weekend a year ago are rendered moot.”

Although “The Fall Guy” easily topped box office charts, it wasn’t the sole newcomer. Sony and Screen Gem’s low-budget horror film “Tarot” opened in fourth place with $6.5 million from 3,104 locations. It also opened overseas with $3.7 million, boosting its global tally to $10.2 million.

Despite the single-digit domestic debut, it’s not a bad start because the film cost just $8 million and marketing expenses were low, too. “Tarot,” a supernatural story about friends who unleash evil from a cursed deck of tarot cards, has terrible reviews (it scored a bleak “C-” on CinemaScore and an even more tragic 12% on Rotten Tomatoes), which won’t help word of mouth.

“The Fall Guy,” based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers, wasn’t the only box office throwback. In honor of May the Fourth (aka “Star Wars Day”), Disney and LucasFilm re-released 1999’s “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” which brought in $8.1 million from 2,600 domestic theaters. Its second-place finish is impressive for a 25-year-old film that is widely available to watch at home. “The Phantom Menace” added $6.4 million internationally, bringing its weekend haul to $14.5 million worldwide.

“Challengers,” which took the No. 1 spot last weekend with $15 million, dropped to third place with $7.65 million in its second outing, down 49% from its opening. After 10 days of release, the film, from Amazon MGM Studios and director Luca Guadagnino, has generated $29.4 million. “Challengers” carries a significant price tag of roughly $55 million, so it needs to keep chugging along to justify that budget.

“Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire” rounded out the top five with $4.5 million in its sixth weekend of release. The monster tentpole has grossed $188 million domestically and $546 million globally, making it the year’s second-highest-grossing movie.

Elsewhere, A24’s “Civil War” added $3.5 million in its fourth outing, bringing its North American tally to $62 million. It’s nearing the $100 million mark worldwide and already stands as the indie studio’s second-biggest movie of all time. That’s good because with its $50 million price tag, “Civil War” marks A24’s most expensive film to date.
