Gold-mining history, island and coastal escapes, and outdoor (and underground!) adventures all combine for the best ways to enjoy a day trip from Auckland , New Zealand’s biggest city. And everywhere you go, there’s almost always the promise of good food, wine and beer.

Do some water sports in Raglan

Why go? Surf, outdoor adventures and art

West coast surf combines with cafe culture and kayaking or paddle boarding on the sheltered waters of Raglan’s Whaingaroa Harbour. A bohemian band of local artists includes the diverse crew at Jet Collective , and Māori-influenced design from Simon Te Wheoro at his Toi Hauāuru Studio .

How to get to Raglan:  From Auckland to Raglan is just under two hours by car. By public transport, travel by InterCity bus from Auckland to Hamilton, and then transfer to Busit route 23 linking Hamilton to Raglan from the Hamilton Transport Centre.

Have a food, beer and wine tour in Matakana

Why go? Breweries, beaches, and a brilliant farmers market

Visit Matakana’s excellent market  – held riverside on a Saturday morning – before exploring the region’s emerging wine scene or sampling craft beer at 8 Wired Brewing or the Sawmill Brewery . Essential summertime beach detours include Matheson Bay, and Anchor Bay on the nearby Tāwharanui peninsula.

Culinary tours including local cheese, oysters, beer, wine and chocolate are offered by Matakana-based Kiwiness Tours . It also runs after-dark walks to experience the kiwi sanctuary at nearby  Tāwharanui Regional Park .

How to get to Matakana:  Matakana is an easy one-hour drive north of Auckland. By bus with Auckland Transport takes from two to three hours (via Warkworth), but will involve multiple transfers.

Tourists strolling around an Italian-style garden, with individual flower beds separated by low hedges

Enjoy art and culture in Hamilton

Why go? Extravagant gardens and Māori culture

Highlights of New Zealand’s fourth-largest city include the superb Hamilton Gardens , featuring the entertainingly confounding Surrealist Garden, and the display of Māori taonga (treasures) at the Waikato Museum . After a hit of art and culture, adjourn to Duck Island Ice Cream for seasonal flavors, or shared plates at riverside cafe  Gothenburg .

How to get to Hamilton: By car, it’s an easy 90-minute drive south on SH1, and there are also regular InterCity bus services linking Auckland and Hamilton.

Go glow worm spotting at the Waitomo Caves

Why go? Exciting subterranean adventures

Board a boat to drift along an underground river in Waitomo’s historic Glowworm Cave , or embark on the "Only in New Zealand" adventure of black-water rafting . Wetsuits are mandatory for participants steering an inner tube over underground rapids and waterfalls. Other exciting options include cave zip-lining and rappelling with Waitomo Adventures .

How to get to the Waitomo Caves:  It’s a drive of 2½ hours from Auckland to the Waitomo Caves, or the destination can be combined with a longer visit incorporating Raglan or Hamilton (both one hour from Waitomo). Day trips from Auckland including the Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton can be booked with Bush & Beach.

A huge rock archway is a distinctive feature on a sandy beach

Have a soak in Hahei

Why go? Surprising coastal highlights on the Coromandel Peninsula

Embark on an easy kayak to Cathedral Cove , a spectacular rock arch on the edge of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve. After rain, a natural waterfall sometimes flows from atop the arch. At nearby Hot Water Beach, visitors can dig themselves a natural hot tub in the sand around low tide. Pizza and beers at Hahei’s Pour House complete this Coromandel day trip.

How to get to Hahei:  Auckland to Hahei is just over two hours by car. From October to April, visitors to Cathedral Cove should leave their vehicle at the Park & Ride parking lot at the entrance to Hahei and catch the shared shuttle into town, where many kayak tours start. Go Kiwi  buses to Hahei run from downtown Auckland, also stopping to pick up passengers at Auckland Airport.

See 19th-century heritage in Coromandel Town

Why go? Railway ride and forest adventures

Heritage 19th-century buildings reinforce the gold-mining history of Coromandel Town, discovered nearby at Driving Creek in 1852. Now the verdant valley incorporates the quirky narrow-gauge Driving Creek Railway  – with views all the way back to Auckland from the "Eyefull Tower" – and an exciting zip line swooping through a stand of regenerating native forest.

How to get to Coromandel Town:  Driving from Auckland to Coromandel Town takes around 2½ hours, but an alternative day trip option is to catch the ferry from downtown Auckland with Fullers360 . The journey across the Firth of Thames takes two hours, and incorporates a 15-minute minibus transfer to Coromandel Town. Transfers covering the short distance to Driving Creek are also available.

Two hikers wearing backpacks stride down a grassy path towards a sandy cove hidden by tall rocks on each side

Stroll the trails of Tiritiri Matangi

Why go? Native birdlife on an island sanctuary

Venture across the Hauraki Gulf to this predator-free bird sanctuary. Tiritiri Matangi’ s avian superstars are the squat and quizzical takahē, a flightless bird found only on the island, in fenced predator-free sanctuaries, and in the most remote wilderness areas of New Zealand’s South Island. Strolling on the Tiritiri Matangi’s bush and beach trails may also reveal up to 30 other bird species.

How to get to Tiritiri Matangi:  Catch the ferry from downtown Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi with Fullers360. Fullers’ other island day-trip destinations from Auckland include Waiheke Island and  Rangitoto Island .

Enjoy the microclimate of Waiheke Island

Why go? Wine, beaches, and fine dining

Auckland’s island of wine is a favorite escape for city locals, drawn to Waiheke’s vineyard restaurants and a Mediterranean-style microclimate that’s equal parts southern Europe and southern hemisphere. Challenge yourself on EcoZip’ s zip line adventure, soaring high above vineyards and native bush, before a long lunch at the Spanish-influenced Casita Miro .

How to get to Waiheke Island:  Catch the passenger ferry with Fullers360 from downtown Auckland, and then use the convenient 50A and 50B bus services from Auckland Transport to get around the island. You’ll need to buy a stored value AT HOP card to use on the bus. Car ferries with Sealink leave from central Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter and Half Moon Bay in east Auckland.

Have a beachfront meal in Waihi

Why go? Gold-mining history and clifftop walking

Towering Phoenix palms and stately buildings line Waihi’s main street, a legacy of the quiet Waikato town’s gold-flecked past. Explore the region’s lustrous history at the award-winning Gold Discovery Centre , join a tour to learn about the sprawling Martha Mine, or divert to nearby Waihi Beach and tackle the Orokawa Bay walk high above the beach’s surf-trimmed arc. A late lunch or early dinner at Flatwhite 's beachfront location is recommended.

How to get to Waihi: It’s a drive of 1¾ hours from Auckland to Waihi, and then a further 15 minutes to Waihi Beach. InterCity buses linking Auckland to Tauranga stop at Waihi, but travelers then need to catch Bayhopper’s number 85 bus service from Waihi to Waihi Beach (Tuesday and Thursday only), or arrange taxi transport with Waihi Cabs .

15 Best Day Trips from Auckland

Often overlooked by tourists heading elsewhere in New Zealand, Auckland is well worth taking an extra couple of days to explore so you can experience the urban side of the country.

The city itself is full of multi-cultural cuisine and events, world-class specialty coffee shops and a wide range of New Zealand’s best boutiques.

There is also plenty of history – both colonial and indigenous – natural beauty and of course “fush ‘n chups” – a local delicacy that was imported by the British and perfected by the remaining Kiwis.

It is also a great city to use as a base whilst you explore other parts of the North Island, with most places in Northland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty being easily accessible from the city within a day trip.

Here are 15 of the best trips you can take from New Zealand’s largest city.

1. Hobbiton

Hobbiton, New Zealand

One of the most popular day trips for visitors to New Zealand, immerse yourself in the Lord of the Rings franchise in Hobbiton.

Here, you can explore the hobbit holes that were built for use in the Hobbit trilogy, and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the region.

You can also enjoy Lord of the Rings themed drinks at the Green Dragon Inn and sample some of New Zealand’s fine cuisine at The Shire’s Rest Café.

There is a guided tour around the complex which takes around two hours, but you are free to explore the area afterwards and, of course, get your photo taken in front of the hobbit holes.

Great combo tour : Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Small-Group Day Tour from Auckland

2. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves is a large network of underground caves that are filled with glowworms.

You can enjoy the caves by taking a gentle boat ride throughout the complex, with a local guide explaining how the caves formed and a little bit about the glowworms.

There is also the opportunity to go black water rafting; you can get your adrenaline fix by riding a flume through the caves in the pitch black, with only the gentle glow of the glowworms to guide your way.

A great experience in a country famed for its adrenaline sports and attractions.

Amazing combo tour : Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Small-Group Day Tour from Auckland

3. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

A short boat ride away from Auckland Central Business District (CBD), you can opt to either enjoy the high-life of the city’s socialites or have a more down to earth experience with the local hippy communities.

Waiheke is well known in the region for its vineyards and there are plenty of wineries set in stunning spots across the island for you to sample the local wine.

There are many beautiful beaches around the island, several of which can be very secluded if you go at the right time.

We also suggest you try Waiheke Oysters at one of the many cafés.

Recommended tour : Waiheke Island Premium Food & Wine Tour with Platter Lunch

4. Piha, Karekare Rainforest and Waitakere Ranges

Piha, New Zealand

Known as Auckland’s Wild West, this region is only an hour away from the Auckland CBD and packed with natural beauty.

Piha itself is a small village with one of the most famous beaches in the country.

You can continue up the coast to Bethell’s Beach – where Taylor Swift once filmed her Out of the Woods music video.

Away from the beaches, you can enjoy some spectacular hikes through the Waitakere Ranges – a small mountain range formed by the Auckland volcanic fault.

These mountains are covered in forests – known locally as bush – with Karekare Rainforest being the most popular for experiencing the lush green beauty of New Zealand.

Suggested tour : Piha & Karekare Rainforest Wine Day Tour from Auckland

5. Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island

Also a short boat ride from Auckland CBD, Rangitoto Island is the largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic fault and can be seen from most areas of the city.

Get your hiking boots on to truly experience the best this island has to offer, including unique wildlife and lush forest areas.

Once you reach the top, you will be treated to great views over the Hauraki Gulf and towards Auckland City.

You can also take a small detour to nearby caves to discover more of the volcanic wonders this island has to offer.

If you don’t feel like taking a long hike, there is a small train that takes you most of the way up to the top of the island.

Please be aware there are no restaurants or inhabitants on the island, so bring some snacks and plenty of water.

Recommended tour : Rangitoto Island Volcanic Explorer Tour from Auckland

6. Coromandel

Cathedral Cove Beach, Coromandel

Just across the Hauraki Gulf from Auckland, a two-hour journey brings you to this secluded peninsula.

It is not as touristy as other parts of the country, so a great off-the-beaten-path option if you are looking to get away from the busier attractions.

The Coromandel Peninsula is a large mountain range covered entirely in ancient New Zealand forest.

There is an interesting train ride attraction where you can learn about the local pottery industry, and some of the smaller towns showcase New Zealand culture at its most raw.

We suggest checking out Paeroa on the way, to learn about the most famous local soda – L&P – named after the town.

Suggested tour : Coromandel & Cathedral Cove Day Tour

7. Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Located in the far north of the country, the Bay of Islands is another popular destination for tourists – particularly in the summer months.

It is one of the only subtropical areas of the country and this enhances the laid-back lifestyle of the local towns.

Head to the bay itself to experience one of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, as well as try out some water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing.

In Russell, you can visit a Maori experience to learn more about the indigenous culture of the islands, and about the Treaty of Waitangi, which established New Zealand as a British Dominion.

Available tour : Bay of Islands Day Tour from Auckland with Historic Russell

Rotorua, New Zealand

A bit of a longer journey from Auckland, Rotorua is well worth the trip.

Centered around Lake Rotorua, the town (known locally as Rotovegas) is packed with adrenaline sports activities like parachute jumping, bungee jumping, and zorbing.

If you are traveling with kids, there is a very popular go-kart track that winds around the nearby hills, giving great views over the countryside.

There are great Maori cultural centers for you to experience the indigenous history and a native redwood forest for day hikes.

The town is the center of geothermal activity, making it excellent for visiting natural spas and checking out the steam.

It does also, however, give the town a very distinctive rotten-egg smell, so keep this in mind before you go.

Recommended tour : Waitomo & Rotorua Day Trip from Auckland with Gondola Ride

Taupo Lake, New Zealand

A little further south than Rotorua, but also well worth a visit, is Taupo.

The entire Lake Taupo region is a popular getaway destination for kiwis during the summer, thanks to the breathtaking natural beauty.

You can enjoy boat journeys – or even kayak rides if you’re up to it – to Maori carvings and secluded beaches by lakeside.

The town is also a short drive away from Tongariro National Park.

This is where the Mordor scenes of the Lord of the Rings were filmed and it is easy to see why, thanks to the desert-like almost lunar landscapes the region showcases.

There are free hot springs in the town park, but make sure only to enter pools which signs confirm are safe, as others are far too hot!

Raglan, New Zealand

Located on the west coast of the North Island, Raglan is a very popular destination for surfers.

Surfing is very popular across both New Zealand and Australia, and if you want to try your hand at the sport, this town is one of the best places in the world to have a go.

It is also surrounded by gorgeous native bush and mountain ranges for you to explore when you tire of the waves.

The cliffs provide great views over the Tasman Sea and the town of Raglan; with a little bit of effort and a short hike, you can discover secluded waterfalls with fresh water that you can bathe in and even drink from.

11. Villa Maria Estate

Villa Maria Estate

New Zealand wine is growing in popularity across the world, thanks to the great climate and dedication to quality given by local winemakers.

The Villa Maria Estate is located just outside of Auckland Central, close to the airport; however, we do recommend setting a day aside to visit the area.

The winery produces wine with grapes grown across the country in Gisborne, Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Auckland.

You will be given samples of wine from all the regions and taught about how it is produced, as well as given the chance to make your own tasting notes.

This is a must for any wine lover visiting New Zealand.

Available tour : Villa Maria Estate Scenic Vineyard Odyssey

12. Matakana

Matakana

Located in the northern reaches of rural Auckland, Matakana is another area of natural beauty within a reasonably short trip from the city center.

Popular with foodies, there are plenty of great attractions in the region to let you discover the best New Zealand food has to offer.

The New Zealand Honey Centre will teach you all about Manuka Honey and the strict quality efforts that go into producing it.

You can sample local cheeses and wines at the Matakana farmers’ market.

On the way, stop in at the Puhoi Cheese Factory if you are interested in learning more about local dairy production.

13. Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga, New Zealand

Cape Reinga is at New Zealand’s northernmost tip, where you can see the Tasman Sea join the Pacific Ocean.

Here, you can learn about the combinations of European and Maori history, as well as about Maori mythology; this is a culturally important place for the local Maori people.

There is also an impressive 800-year-old Pohutukawa Tree – if you visit in the summer, you will be able to see it bloom with bright red foliage – a popular symbol for New Zealand and its people.

Continue south from Cape Reinga and you can check out 90 Mile Beach.

Here you can surf the sand dunes that line one of the largest beaches in the country, all while enjoying spectacular views over the ocean.

14. Tiritiri Matangi

Tiritiri Matangi

Another Hauraki Gulf island worth visiting, you can take a slightly longer boat trip from Auckland CBD to this protected nature reserve.

The island is packed with native birdlife thanks to major conservation efforts.

Many of the birds on the island can only be found here, and this is an opportunity to get up close to the unique wildlife of New Zealand.

You can visit the island at your own pace, or take a short tour which will teach you all about the birds that inhabit the island and how to identify their calls.

There is also a ferry to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, which is home to secluded beaches and a laid-back café culture, perfect for you to experience the famous New Zealand flat white.

15. Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui

Located in the northern suburbs of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui is a major party town by night and a relaxed beach town by day.

There are plenty of options for you to try out surfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing on the beach which overlooks the Bay of Plenty.

You can also take a hike up Mount Maunganui itself to get one of the most famous panoramic views in the country.

On your way back to the beach, check out some of the top-notch cafés on offer in the city, which feature excellent Kiwi cuisine, well-crafted specialty coffee, and even alcoholic milkshakes if you are looking to really kick back and embrace the local life.

Less than 30 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Auckland’s city center and you’ll find yourself on a somewhat deserted island, with the lushness that is known in New Zealand ready & waiting to be explored.

This 5.5 km wide island is visible from the city shoreline with its iconic cone volcano rising nearly 900 ft high and was formed due to numerous eruptions about 6,000 years ago. Although it hasn’t erupted in over 550 years, scientists still monitor Rangitoto for any activity but it is still safe for people to visit the island.

There are numerous walking trails around the island, the most popular being the hike to the summit where you’ll get stunning panoramic views back towards the city & the entire Hauraki Gulf as well.  We suggest this Rangitoto day tour for under $50 , it includes your ferry ticket and a half-day tour of the island learning about its history and exploring it in a 4WD vehicle.

3. Hobbiton

Peter Jackson hired location scouts when he was in the process of getting ready to film The Hobbit . These scouts scoured the country to find the most magical of locations to film this epic fantasy for the big screen. One, in particular, was up in a small plane when he spotted what he believed would be the perfect location for what would end up being The Shire .

Cascading Whangarei Falls accessibly as a day trip from Auckland

4. Whangarei Falls

If you’re craving a bit of solitude right in the middle of nature then Whangarei is the best place to take a day trip out of the city. Located 2.5 hours from Auckland and easily accessible by car or intercity bus, the northernmost city is home to some seriously lush walking tracks and a stunning waterfall that you won’t want to miss out on.

Over 85 ft high, Whangarei Falls are some of the most popular, and the walk itself will take you about 30 minutes one way from the signposted parking lot. You’ll cross through gorgeous fields of wildflowers and native bush along the way, as well as multiple bridges over the river which give you a great viewing platform to take in these curtain falls that rush over basalt cliffs.

High on the Hate River, you’ll also have the opportunity to walk up to the top of the falls on a trail that will give you a view from up top where you’ll get a whole new perspective on this spot. In the summer months, the pool below the falls is a local swimming spot so pack up a picnic, bring your swimmers & jump right in!

5. Waitomo Glow Worm Caves

When it comes to adventure sports New Zealand isn’t lacking for options. And while the South Island may boast some incredible experiences (Bungee Jumping, Paragliding, etc) the North Island isn’t without their own gems.

What could be more adventurous than strapping on a helmet, getting into an inner tub and rafting down in some incredible caves to see a natural phenomenon that feels magical? If that has your name all over it, then be sure to get down to the Waitomo glow worm caves , a 2.5-hour drive from Auckland.

Using any number of specialized tour companies. The bioluminescent effect you’ll experience down in the caves are from a species of glow worm only found in these exact caves in New Zealand, additionally, you’ll get the chance to raft through the caverns, climb up/down & if you’re feeling super adventurous do some abseiling!

6. Waitakere Ranges

Less than 30km from Auckland city center you can find the perfect spot to get your tramp on. Lace-up your hiking boots, pack the camera (a travel drone if you have one),+ some snacks and head off towards one of the countries natural treasure, the Waitakere Ranges.

A chain of hills west of the city starts off with a great visitor/information center where knowledgeable rangers and staff will be able to give you some excellent suggestions on which trails are best suited to you. 250 km of trails, waterfalls, viewpoints of the most stunning flora in the area and even a chance to spot some local wildlife, this is one of best places in Auckland that will make you forget how close you are to an actual city, the perfect place to escape the hostel and bustle and get lost for a day.

One of the most incredible sites you’ll take in on these trails are the giants, giant Kauri trees to be exact. Trees hundreds of thousands of years old reaching up towards the clouds will have your eyes going up and up and up…

waves crashing on Piha Beach a great place for a day trip from Auckland

7. West Coast Beaches

Black sand beaches are a thing of sheer beauty and yet another natural beauty that New Zealand is not lacking in. Just a little further from the Waitakere Ranges Info center you’ll find yourself in the perfect position to check out the triple threat of beaches west of Auckland.

Piha Beach in one of Auckland’s most famous black sand beaches and for good reason, the views stretch on for miles of almost sparkling black sand, and Lions Head is an epic viewpoint from beach level or if you’re feeling brave enough you can climb to the top.

Whether you’re after a chilled out afternoon on the beach or maybe some surfing lessons, this spot is a must not miss before heading a little further up the west coast and hitting up Muriwai. If you have a bird lover in your group this spot will be one for them with a colony of 1200+ gannets calling this spot home, and even if you’re not the views are amazing and the walking trails give way to stunning panoramic views of the coastline.

A 4-hour walk or a short drive in the car will have you arriving at Te Henga (Bethells Beach) a more sheltered location and the perfect place for a day out with a group. This beach seems to stretch on for miles and could be the perfect location for that pickup rugby match you’ve been talking about between yourselves the whole trip.

If you want to continue on the beach hopping check out https://www.aucklandnz.com/visit/destinations/auckland-west/west-coast-beaches for more stops along the west coast

Auckland City Favourites

If time isn’t on your side, maybe you’ve got a long layover flying across the world or just stopping over for 48 hours and a day trip out of the city isn’t possible, fear not! The city itself has so much on offer from incredible beaches to stunning views.

Check out one of the many bike rental companies in the city, strap on that helmet and cruise out to Mission Bay – the seaside suburb barely a 30-minute ride from the center of the city. Countless restaurants and pubs line the street facing the beach and there is plenty of grass space to set up a picnic or get in on some volleyball with the city installed courts on the beach.

If you want a great spot to soak in the sun & then catch a great sunset then this is it. St-Heliers is a quick cycle past Mission Bay and the views just get better with each stretch of beach you pass.

If you prefer a stroll and a scenic viewpoint be sure to head up to Mt Eden Domain , a dormant volcano with a summit that is the highest natural point in Auckland. As you stroll through the park keep your eyes peeled for lots of sheep (no trip to New Zealand is complete without a sheep sighting or 10) grazing in and around the crater, and as you make your way up the steep side of the crate you’ll see the monument that is One Tree Hill .

The obelisk you’ll see sitting proudly atop the summit is a memorial to a Maori warrior and beneath it is the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell who had donated $10, 000 for the memorial. Some of the most incredible views of Auckland can be seen from the top and the best place for sunset in Auckland.

My final must-see suggestion would be Devonport , which can be reached by ferry although it is technically landlocked the ferry is the quickest way to get over there. In less than 15 minutes from the Auckland ferry terminal, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a completely different place.

A slow relaxed vibe emirates from Devonport and you’ll feel it the minute you start strolling the small streets taking in the local shops and adorable cafes that line those streets. Home to the base of the Royal New Zealand Navy there are lots of leftover military tunnels and canons at North Head that are definitely worth checking out.

A nd what I would say is the absolute best sunset viewing spot in all of Auckland; Mount Victoria. You’ll be greeted with panoramic views back to Auckland and the surrounding waterfront suburbs and watching the sunset here is the perfect way to end an amazing trip to the North Island.

A diverse country like New Zealand obviously houses diverse cities & town, and Auckland is one of them. From stunning white black beaches to the chilled out harbourside suburbs. Rafting in incredible caves, hiking some of the most infamous trails, and of course experiencing real-life Middle Earth for yourself.

Whatever it is you’re searching for on your next Kiwi Adventure don’t write off Auckland as “just another city”, she’s so much more than that. While the city has so much to offer, there are some unreal spots worth checking out within a few hours of the city making for epic day trips to throw your trip over the edge (in the best way possible). So when it comes to planning your next adventure to New Zealand be sure to add Auckland to the top of that list!

You only need one bus ticket to tour the entire city in just a day. You can start from Mt. Eden to see Auckland from high. Next, pop into the Parnell Village to learn about the city’s oldest neighborhood before heading to the Auckland Museum to learn about Maori Culture.

Other popular stops include the Rose Gardens for a nature walk and the Sky Tower. Overall, there are at least 14 stops to make with a single bus ticket so can start this day trip around Auckland from anywhere in the city.

Generally, the bus tour is great for someone who is new to Auckland and short on time. It’s a great way to see the city on a budget.

9 – Puhoi Kayak Day Trip

auckland day trips winter

A few miles from Matakana is the beautiful town of Puhoi. The town is popularly known for its bohemian heritage. A day trip from Auckland here allows you to learn a few things about its history; however, the real fun is kayaking. Paddle on the cool waters of the Puhoi River until you reach the historic and iconic Puhoi Pub for a cold beer.

If you are looking to escape the bustle of the city, there is no better getaway experience than the Puhoi Day Tour.

10 – Waiheke Island Ferry Tour

auckland day trips winter

A quick ride on a ferry is all it takes to reach Waiheke island. The island is not only the second largest but also the most populated in the Gulf of NZ. Explore some of the popular wineries like Mudbrick and Cable Bay, or visit the lovely beaches to cool off after a long day.

Take a tour of Stony Batter to see the historic World War II displays and sculptures. Every experience in Waiheke Island – whether it’s wine tasting or a stretch at the beach – is memorable.

11 – Whangarei Falls Day Tour

auckland day trips winter

If you really want some solitude in the middle of nature, consider heading to Whangarei Falls for one of your day trips from Auckland. The natural attraction is just 2.5 hours drive from the city.

Home to easy walking trails, the fall itself is 85 feet tall. If you opt to walk, it will take you 30 minutes or so to complete the tour. The trip takes you across multiple bridges and through natural bush as you head to the falls. During the summer, you can swim in the pool at the foot of the waterfall.

12 – Waitomo Caves Day Trip

auckland day trips winter

Waitomo is New Zealand’s most famous caving location making it one of the more popular day trips from Auckland. Luckily it is only around 2.5 hours drive from Auckland.

The highlight of the tour is the glow worms. What can be more exciting than donning a head torch and rushing into the caves to chase glow worms?

This is the kind of experience you get when you tour Waitomo. In addition to the glowworms, the trip allows you to enjoy a bungee jump and a paragliding experience.

13 – City Express Day Tour

A visit to Auckland is never complete without an authentic Kiwi experience. This tour guarantees you an informative local guide with English language commentary.

The express trip allows you to enjoy panoramic views from the peak of Mt Eden. This viewpoint allows you to see Auckland’s most valuable homes and you will also learn a bit about Maori tradition. Every experience during the City Express Day Trip is one to remember for days to come.

14 – Rotorua Day Trip

auckland day trips winter

It takes three hours to drive southward from Auckland to Rotorua and is one of the most distinctive day trips from Auckland. Here, the major highlights are geothermal activity, such as hot mud and geysers.

Since the 1800’s, the tour site has seen more visitors than any other place in New Zealand – primarily because of the awesome hot springs, geysers and bubbling mud pools.

If you have exhausted the hot springs, tour the Government Gardens for a relaxing experience or check out the historic center to learn a few things about Maori Culture.

15 – West Coast Beaches

auckland day trips winter

Lastly, you can either walk for about four hours to the West Coast Beaches or take a short drive. The beaches are Auckland’s most celebrated black sand beaches. The most popular spot is Piha Beach – a rugged and wild spot that is simply spectacular.

The highlights include surfing, walking trails, and panoramic views. The West Coast Beaches are generally a great fit for family tours, group excursions and any other type of day trips from Auckland.

9 Best Day Trips from Auckland

By Carl Austin · Last updated on May 17, 2024

Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, has many things going for it. It’s home to the world’s largest Polynesian population. It’s built on an active basaltic volcanic field – the only such city in the world. It’s got great museums, the southern hemisphere’s largest marina, and a fabulous aquarium.

Still, there’s a lot to appreciate outside the city limits. Great black sand beaches and rainforests are easily accessible on day trips from Auckland. You can also drift down an underground river illuminated by glow worms. Oh, the scenery outside of Auckland is pretty spectacular, too.

9. Matakana

Matakana

New Zealand produces some nice wines and what better place to sample them than the vineyard. Matakana is home to more than 30 wineries where you can taste the fruits of the vine. Matakana also is a good place to sample local produce, perhaps buying the fixings for a picnic on a nearby beach.

At the Saturday farmer’s market you can buy foods, including local cheeses and fresh baked breads, direct from the farmers, as well as pick up locally made handicrafts. You’ll also find quaint villages on your day exploring the Matakana coast.

Getting to Matakana

  • As the area produces a lot of great wines and local foods, an excellent way to see Matakana is to take a guided tour of its wineries and chocolate factory, where you’ll get to taste some delicious samples. In addition to this, tours also take you to the impressive Brick Bay Sculpture Park and to a honey center, where you can sample honey wine. See prices

8. Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel Peninsula

On a clear day, you can see the Coromandel Peninsula from Auckland 55 km (34 miles) away, but a day trip there will be a lot more fun. The picturesque peninsula is named after the British navy ship that stopped there in 1820 for supplies. Today, it’s one of New Zealand’s hottest travel destinations, especially if you’re an ecotourist, yachter or scuba diver.

A popular destination is Cathedral Cove (an arch through a limestone cliff looks like a cathedral), but it’s only accessible by foot or boat. You can also go offshore canoeing, walk through a rainforest or on white sand beaches.

Getting to the Coromandel Peninsula

  • To see as much in one day as possible, many people decide to take a guided tour to the peninsula. Along with visits to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, tours also take you on a lovely railway ride to a viewing platform, which offers up stunning panoramas of the Hauraki Gulf. See prices

7. Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands

If you come to see spectacular scenery in New Zealand , the Bay of Islands won’t disappoint you. With 141 islands, it’s easy to see why Captain Cook, the bay’s first European visitor, named the islands Bay of Islands in 1769. It’s one of the most popular sailing and fishing destinations in New Zealand.

If you have time, take a boat ride out into the bay following the historical “cream” route that brought cream from the islands to town. Russell, a quick ferry ride from Pahia, is worth a side trip, if only to visit the cemetery with its quaint tombstones.

Getting to the Bay of Islands

  • As it is quite a distance away, the best way to visit the Bay of Islands is by taking a guided tour; this will help you make the most of your time there. See prices

Muriwai

With its 50 km (30 miles) of unbroken beach, this black sand beach is one of the most popular beaches near Auckland, extending up to the Tasman Sea coast. Surfing is the most popular activity here, but you can also go hang gliding, fishing, “bush hiking” on a boardwalk or paragliding.

Because the sand is so firm, you can also drive on the beach. You’ll also not want to miss the gannet colony on the steep cliffs at the southern end of the beach.

Getting to Muriwai

  • Many people who visit Muriwai opt to take a guided tour. These enable you to taste and learn about some of the surrounding area’s delicious wines, while also visiting the landscapes’ many impressive viewpoints. Walking along Black Sand Beach is just one of the many highlights that the tour offers. See prices

5. Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere Ranges is a good place to savor the outdoors while breathing in some fresh Kiwi air. Administered by the Auckland Council, this regional park has much to tempt the recreationalist in you. There are plenty of rainforest walking and hiking trails, including the Hillary Trail for the more adventuresome.

Some walks, like Kitekite Track, are suitable for the whole family. You can also swim in a pond underneath one of the park’s pretty waterfalls, go fishing, or tramp along the black sand beaches. The waves are good for surfing.

Getting to the Waitakere Ranges

  • To gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the area’s diverse fauna and flora and incredible landscapes, many visitors take an eco-tour with a professional guide. As well as exploring the wonders of Waitakere Ranges, tours also take you to the majestic Black Sand Beach. See prices

4. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island, the second largest and most populated island in the Gulf of New Zealand, has been getting a lot of media attention in recent years. In 2016, Lonely Planet named it the world’s fifth best travel destination while Conde Nast named it the world’s fourth best island to visit.

Accessible by ferry from Auckland, Waiheke Island has several nice beaches, including Oneroa and Cactus. Should you tire of beach activities, you might want to visit Stony Batter, World War II fortifications or an outdoor sculpture display known as Heartland: Sculpture on the Gulf.

Getting to Waiheke Islamd

  • From the Downtown Ferry Terminal in Auckland, there are a number of ferries that you can catch to Waiheke Island; the journey should only take around 40 minutes. It is a very scenic ride through the Tamaki Strait.
  • If you want to sample Waiheke’s culinary delights, you may want to take a food and wine tour to the island. See prices

3. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves

Drifting down an underground river through limestone caves is an adventure not to be missed, especially if it’s the Waitomo Caves. This is how most tourists will visit the caves. Don’t like black water rafting? You can also walk through parts of the cave system; extreme sports enthusiasts can cave crawl through more difficult caves.

What makes Waitomo Caves so special is the lighting system: gazillions of glow worms. You’ll also see stalactites and stalagmites, but it’s the glow worms that will grab your attention.

Getting to the Waitomo Caves

  • Lying almost 200 kilometers to the south of Auckland, the amazing Waitomo Caves are very easy to get to by public transport. Buses departing from Auckland Central take just under three hours to get to the caves.
  • Another option to visit Waitomo Caves is to take a guided tour. With stops at a working farm and a local arts and crafts institute included, alongside a visit to the geysers and hot springs of Rotorua. See prices

Rotorua

Drive three hours southeast of Auckland, and you’ll approach Rotorua. Settled by Maoris in the 14th century, Rotorua is a major tourist draw in North Island. It’s best known for its Maori culture and geothermal activity , including geysers and hot mud pools, since it’s on a caldera. (Some of the hot springs smell pretty bad because of high sulfur content.)

It gets its name from nearby Lake Rotorua, one of 17 lakes in the region. Rotorua has been a tourist spa since the 1800s because of the curative powers of its natural hot springs. Government Gardens is also worth a visit.

Getting to Rotorua

  • A great way to see both Rotorua and the glittering glowworms of Waitomo Caves in just one day is to take a guided tour; these often combine the two together. In addition to this, guests also get to visit a working farm and a Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to learn more about life in the country. See prices

1. Hobbiton Movie Set

Hobbiton Movie Set

If you’re a fan of J.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, you’ll definitely want to take a day trip from Auckland to the Home of Middle-earth at Hobbiton Movie Set. More than 150 locations in New Zealand were used to film the two movie series, but a significant number were filmed at Hobbiton Movie Set on a family farm near Hamilton.

Movie officials picked this site because it reminded them of ancient England. The set is available through guided tours, which must be booked in advance. You’ll visit sets such as hobbit holes and Bagshot Row.

Getting to the Hobbiton Movie Set

  • As you have to take a tour to visit Hobbiton, many people opt to take a combi tour and combine it with a trip to the Waitomo Caves to see the glittering glowworms. See prices

One of the best short drives from Auckland is Piha on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island.

It is in Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, nicknamed Auckland’s Wild West.

With a rugged coastline, great hiking trails, unique wildlife opportunities and New Zealand’s most famous volcanic black sand surf beach, it is the perfect destination for a day trip from Auckland. It also makes the list as one of New Zealand’s most beautiful beaches .

Adventurous day-trippers may like to scale the enormous dunes at Bethells Beach or hike the circular route to Kitekite Falls  or Mercer Bay Loop Walk .

For animal lovers, Tasman Lookout Track is a short but popular trail suitable for all skill levels and an excellent place for birdwatching.

A trip to the gannet colony in Mariwai should also feature on your list of things to do in Piha during your day trip.

Away from the stunning Coromandel beaches, the extensive mountain range covered in ancient New Zealand forest makes a refreshing change from the city.

The Coromandel is a great place for family day trips from Auckland, as it has a good balance of fun things to do.

Head to Hot Water Beach and dig a hot pool ; it’s one of the must-do experiences in New Zealand!

Wander around Whitianga before boarding a cruise to Cathedral Cove (made famous by Captain Cook!).

Afterwards, relax on Hahei Beach before exploring Waiau Kauri Grove, famed for its towering Kauri trees and picturesque waterfall.

Hobbiton Film Set Day Trip #7

Driving Time from Auckland to the Hobbiton Film Set – 2 hours

Small Group Tour – Hobbiton Movie Set Tour

No true Lord of the Rings fan could visit New Zealand without visiting the Hobbiton film set. Located in the countryside of Matamata, this is another New Zealand bucket list adventure that needs to be seen to be believed.

Walk in the footsteps of Bilbo Baggins and Frodo and be guided around the village of Hobbiton.

Find out about the filming of the trilogy and some behind-the-scenes secrets! Step inside a hobbit house and run down the pathway that took Frodo on his adventures.

During the day, Hobbiton Film Set Tours can get extremely busy, so I opted for the Hobbiton Evening Banquet Tour.

Smaller groups, great photo opportunities without the crowds, and the most delicious 3-course banquet served in The Green Dragon. This is one of my favourite places to visit within 2 hours of Auckland and a must for LOTR fans.

Hobbit House on the film set at Hobbiton

Rotorua Day Trip #8

Driving Time from Auckland to Rotorua – just under 3 hours

Guided Tour – Day trip to Rotorua from Auckland

Rotorua is a stark contrast to Auckland and celebrates the captivating Maori culture and natural geothermal wonders of New Zealand.

But get ready for the lingering odour of sulphur (eggy smell) that permeates Rotorua; it is intense!

Rotorua’s main tourist attraction is  Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland , spreading 18 square km across the geothermal area.

Explore the colourful hot springs, including the Lady Knox Geyser, Champagne Pool, Artist’s Palette, Primrose Terrace and boiling mud pools.

Daily demonstrations of hot water and steam spouting from the geysers are fun to watch.

Besides the thermal attractions, Rotorua has other brilliant things to do on a day trip or as part of a longer 7-day North Island itinerary .

Adrenaline junkies will love zorbing and parachute jumping activities, while nature lovers will enjoy some incredible walks in Rotorua through native redwood forests and around the thermal areas.

Waitomo Caves Day Trip #9

Waitomo is one of New Zealand’s best natural attractions and is a great place to visit on a day trip from Auckland. Take a guided boat ride and marvel at thousands of magical glowworms lighting up the extensive cave system.

Learn how glow worms produce their luminescent light (you may be surprised!) and hear your guide bring the glowworm caves to life through the history and legends of the Maori culture.

If you love caves, you will enjoy the 2-hour guided underground tour of Ruakuri Cave . The longest guided underground tour in New Zealand showcases underground waterfalls and natural formations.

If you are brave, you will want to visit Aranui Cave, with its colony of wetas. This is not for the faint-hearted, as a weta is one of the largest insects on the planet!

Driving Time from Auckland to Taupo – 3.5 hours

Flying Time from Auckland – 50 minutes

Taupo is the longest drive from Auckland, but it can still be done in a day if you rise early. It is also a perfect destination to add to a New Zealand North Island Road Trip Itinerary.

Lake Taupo, the largest lake in Oceania, is the centrepiece of the town of Taupo.

Take a lake cruise , enjoy the watersports or hire a bike and cycle around the 10km Great Lake Walkway.

For thrill-seekers, head to Huka Falls and blast along the Waikato River on a jet boat ride . Afterwards, head to Taupo Spa Thermal Park and enjoy a free dip in its swimming pool.

To experience the beauty of Taupo, a flight over the volcanic Mount Ruapehu will give extraordinary views.

Or how about an 18,500ft skydive experience ? Taupo is one of the best places in New Zealand for adrenaline activities.

Tongariro National Park is just south of Taupo. Hikers will enjoy exploring its magnificent volcanic alpine landscape and can ski on its slopes if visiting in winter.

Why not book a Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle to take the hassle out of getting to Tongariro?

Make sure to get a selfie at the #LOVETAUPO lettering, which can be found on Lake Terrace, before heading home. It’s a lovely memory of your day trip to Taupo.

New Zealand is on my bucket list. I didn't realize there were so many cool places to day trip from Auckland. Loved the handy sharable Google map and how you listed how long it would take to drive, fly, or take a ferry to each day trip. Can't decide if the wineries or Mount Maunganui should be my first stop...

Glad you found it useful Debra. I would definitely head to the wineries!!

Sherianne Higgins

You had me at beaches and waterfalls. Bay of Islands looks gorgeous and worth the 3-hour drive. I really want to dig a hot pool on Hot Water Beach and check out the waterfall at Waiau Kauri Grove. Mount Maunganui is another spot I will need to add to my itinerary, I have always wanted to visit a glow worm cave and I’m curious about the hot water ocean. Great ideas!

The 11 Best Day Trips From Auckland

Auckland, a sprawling metropolis, doesn’t boast many world-famous attractions, but it’s a great base for excellent day trips showcasing New Zealand’s breath-taking nature, vibrant dining scene and famous laidback lifestyle. Here is the list of the best day trips from Auckland, from remote beaches and stunning hiking trails to nearby islands and famous movie sets.

Day Trips From Auckland – Up To 1 Hour One Way

Waiheke island.

Although Waiheke is technically part of Auckland, it feels like it’s a world away from its busy neighbour. Just a 40-minute ferry ride from the city centre, the bohemian island is famous for its numerous wineries. With its tranquil scenery, quirky art galleries and picturesque beaches, there is also plenty to do in between wine tastings.

Thanks to the regular ferry service, getting to Waiheke is relatively easy. However, getting around the island is less straightforward. You can bring your car over, but this option is pricey and probably not the best if you’re planning on visiting the wineries and don’t have a designated sober driver. There are also taxis, but they can be quite expensive.

There is a bus network that connects the main ferry terminal with the main towns like Oneroa, Surfdale and Ostend. Some bus routes will also take you to a few popular wineries. You can use the pre-loaded AT Hop Card that you would normally use in Auckland. Just make sure you check the bus schedule beforehand as some services are not the most regular.

One way of taking the hassle out of getting around Waiheke is to join a guided tour. For example, this half-day tour of Waiheke features a visit to three vineyards, lunch and a stop at the beautiful Onetangi beach.

Waiheke Island is a popular option for day trips from Auckland

Waitakere Ranges

Another popular destination for day trips from Auckland is the Waitakere Ranges. A playground for nature lovers, this region is home to a lush forest, unique wildlife, beautiful waterfalls and incredible black sand beaches.

If you’re after a relaxing day out, head to Piha or Muriwai beach where you can enjoy a swim or even a surfing session. If you’d like to be more active, hit one of the many walking trails available in the region. From short scenic strolls to challenging hikes, there is something for every level of fitness.

Getting to the Waitakere Ranges can be a little challenging if you don’t have a car as the public transport network is limited there. Renting a car for the day will give you the most flexibility. Alternatively, there are some day tours with pick-up from central Auckland. For example, on this Waitakere Ranges Wilderness Experience tour you’ll be able to see the highlights of the region and enjoy a kiwi-style afternoon tea.

Muriwai Beach in the Waitakere Ranges

Rangitoto Island

Another spot that’s technically in Auckland, but does require at least half a day for exploration, is Rangitoto Island. Just a short ferry ride away from the city, its distinctive symmetrical cone is actually the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic field. It is perfect for hiking and scenic views over the city and Hauraki Gulf.

The most popular walking trail leading to Rangitoto’s summit will take about an hour one way. You can also explore the coast of Rangitoto or walk to the adjoining Motutapu Island. Guided walks are available in case you’d like to learn more about the history and unique nature of this beautiful day trip destination.

You can book your Rangitoto Island round trip ferry pass on the Fullers website (the official ferry service).

Rangitoto Island makes for an easy day trip from Auckland

Although this small town may technically be within Auckland’s ever expanding boundaries, it definitely feels like it’s a world away. Just an hour’s drive north of the city centre, Matakana should be on every foodie’s list.

Matakana is famous for its Farmers’ Market. Open every Saturday between 8am–1pm, this is the place to stock up on fresh produce, artisan pastries, organic olive oil, wine and more. It is also a popular brunch spot with excellent coffee. Aside from the Farmers Market, Matakana is a great place for antique and art shopping with plenty of little galleries and quirky shops to check out.

The town is also a great starting point for exploring local vineyards. The Matakana region is famous for its wine, so you’ll be spoilt for choice if you decide to spend an afternoon wine tasting. One of my favourite vineyards in the area is Brick Bay which features an architecturally-designed restaurant and a sculpture trail.

The easiest way to reach Matakana is by car. Another option is to join a guided tour. This Horse Riding and Wine Tasting Tour offers a different way to experience the region and includes a visit to a local winery.

Day Trips From Auckland – 2 Hours and Under One Way

Tiritiri matangi.

Another beautiful Hauraki Gulf island perfect for a day trip is Tiritiri Matangi. Just a 75 minute ferry trip away from central Auckland, it is a great spot for nature lovers and bird-watchers.

Tiritiri Matangi is one of New Zealand’s most successful conservation projects. It is a wildlife sanctuary that is home to many rare bird species, many of which can only be found in New Zealand. Aside from wildlife, you can also check out various walking trails, pristine beaches and New Zealand’s oldest operating lighthouse.

Visitors to the island can also join a guided walk with a local volunteer that starts right at the wharf. The tours will help you to learn about the island’s unique flora and fauna as well as its history. As a person with limited knowledge of birds and plants, I really appreciated the information on what I was seeing and hearing. So I highly recommend joining these, especially if you’ve visiting Tiritiri Matangi for the first time.

You can purchase the tickets to the island on the ferry operator’s website . Adult tickets are $82 (53 USD) per person. Guided tours are an additional $10 (6 USD) per person.

Hobbiton Movie Set

A visit to the Hobbiton movie set is probably on many travelers’ New Zealand bucket lists. Located on the outskirts of a sleepy town called Matamata, a two hours drive south from Auckland, Hobbiton can be easily done on a day trip.

The only way to visit the set is by joining a guided tour. The standard Hobbiton Movie Set guided tour takes about two hours and includes a walk around the set accompanied by behind-the-scenes stories. There are lots of photo opportunities to capture the memories of the visit.

There are other Hobbiton experiences that will allow you to spend more time on the set. For example, you can add on a lunch or a dinner banquet after the guided tour itself. I imagine if you’re a big fan of the Lord of the Rings universe, these options might be a great way to make your experience even more special.

To be honest, I initially had mixed feelings about this experience. I enjoyed Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings movies as they still contained the spirit of Tolkien’s books. I did not enjoy the Hobbit trilogy that much though and thought it was a mess only driven by a desire to make more money. That’s why I was worried the Hobbiton would be a tacky let down.

However, it was actually a fun day out. Our guide was enthusiastic and the place felt quite lived in. It seemed like the characters were about to step out of their homes to greet the tourist crowds. I especially enjoyed a drink at the atmospheric Green Dragon Inn, which was included in the tour.

Hobbiton Movie Set - a great option for a day trip from Auckland

Another great day trip from Auckland for those who are after a more laid back pace of life is Raglan. This bohemian surf town is situated on the West Coast of North Island, just a two-hour drive from the city. It is famous for its black sand beaches, stunning natural landscape and vibrant art scene.

Raglan has great options for both seasoned surfers and newbies. There are Surf lessons for those who would like to try this sport out for the first time. Water based activities are not limited to surfing though. Kayaking, paddle boarding and cruises are also available and are a great way to experience Raglan’s beautiful surroundings.

If you prefer to stay on dry land, Raglan offers many hiking trails, with something for every fitness level. When you need to refuel, the town has a great selection of dining options, from café classics to excellent seafood.

Day Trips From Auckland – Under 3 Hours One Way

Waitomo glow worm caves.

Just a two and a half hour drive away from the city, Waitomo is a unique natural attraction that is a popular destination for day trips from Auckland. It is a network of caves featuring fascinating limestone formations, underground rivers and grottos with luminescent glow worms.

The easiest way to experience Waitomo is by joining a guided tour. There are actually three caves you can visit. The most popular option is the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. It consists of two levels. The upper level is dry so you will get to explore it by foot. On the lower level you will take a boat which will take you through the magical glow worm grotto. You can book this tour in advance on GetYourGuide .

The other cave that is open to visitors is Ruakuri Cave, the largest in the Waitomo area. Although Ruakuri doesn’t have as many glow worms as the Waitomo Glow Worm Cave, it is spectacular in its own right. To access the cave, you will descend through a stunning man-made spiral entrance. You will then walk through its network of caverns and passages, marvelling at the unique limestone formations. Ruakuri Cave tours need to be booked separately from the Waitomo Caves experiences.

The third cave you can visit is Aranui Cave. As it doesn’t have any water, there are no glow worms there. However, it features spectacular pale brown, pink and white stalactites and stalagmites that will delight those who appreciate geology. Aranui Cave tours also need to be booked separately from the other cave visits.

If you’re short on time, you can even combine visits to Hobbiton and Waitomo with this full-day trip that departs from Auckland .

The Coromandel

Another popular destination for day trips from Auckland is the Coromandel peninsula. A two hour drive away from the city, this area is famous for its stunning beaches, lush forests and an all-round chilled vibe. It’s popular with both kiwis and international visitors.

To be honest, I’m not sure if a day trip will do the Coromandel justice. However, if you are strapped for time, there are a few spectacular spots that are close to each other and can easily be visited in just one day. If you’re not keen on a long drive, you can instead join a full day guided tour that will take you to most of these locations.

Start the day by visiting the popular Hot Water Beach located on the east coast of the peninsula. There you can enjoy an area of thermal water just underneath the sand. Please note, it is only accessible at low tide. It is a popular spot, so expect to be surrounded by a few people.

Then head to the Hahei village which is a 10-minute drive away from the Hot Water Beach. Hahei has a beautiful beach of its own, but It is also a starting point for walks and boat tours to the famous Cathedral Cove beach that was featured in the Narnia films. The nearby town of Whitianga is perfect for a lunch stop or even a relaxing session at the Lost Spring thermal spa .

You can probably include a couple of other stops on the day, but driving in the Coromandel might be challenging due to its winding country roads. For a day trip, I would focus on the quality rather than quantity of experiences.

Cathedral Cove Beach in the Coromandel

Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway

The Coromandel is also a great destination for day hikes and Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is one of my personal favourites. It is situated at the southern end of the peninsula, a one and a half hour’s drive from central Auckland. You can easily combine the gorge and a Coromandel beach on a day trip from Auckland.

The walkway follows the old railway line between the towns of Paeroa and Waihi. Along the way, you can spot old mining and railway relics while enjoying the beautiful natural setting. The main track is easy and will take about 4 hours (return).

For more information about the track, check out the Karangahake Gorge page of the Department of Conservation’s website.

Another great place to add to your list of possible day trips from Auckland is Rotorua, a small town that lies on the shores of a tranquil lake of the same name. A two and a half hour drive from the city, it is famous for its geothermal activity, beautiful landscapes and Māori culture.

You can experience the geothermal wonders of the area by visiting attractions such as Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia . These geothermal parks feature otherworldly landscapes, bubbling mud pools and powerful geysers. Te Puia is also a great place to experience traditional Māori arts and crafts.

Another way to enjoy Rotorua’s geothermal waters and mud is to book yourself into one of the many spas. The most famous ones are the Polynesian Spa and Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park & Mud Spa. I’m not sure if the mud and waters truly have the health benefits the spas claim they do. Even if they don’t, an afternoon at one of these spas is a great way to unwind after all the adventuring.

If you have the option of staying there for a few days, there is more than enough to see and do in Rotorua. However, you will still be able to experience the highlights of the area on a day trip. If you don’t want to do the long drive to Rotorua yourself, there are full-day guided tours that depart from Auckland.

This Get Your Guide tour allows you to tailor your itinerary with different activities so you can see the attractions that you’re most interested in. You can actually visit Rotorua , Ho b biton and Waitomo Caves on a full-day guided tour . It’s a long day, but could be a good option if you don’t have much time on the North Island.

Wai-o-Tapu geothermal pools in Rotorua

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Auckland is a great starting point for exploring many beautiful parts of New Zealand. My personal favourites from this list of the best day trips from Auckland are Tiritiri Matangi, Waiheke and Waitomo Caves. I visited Waitomo Glow Worm and Ruakuri Caves on the same day and, although pricey, it was a memorable experience.

Have you been to any of these destinations? What’s been your favourite? Let me know in the comment section.

9 self drive day trips from auckland.

Date Modefied: October 9, 2020

Exploring the vines on Waiheke Island

Over the past couple of years, self-drive day trips have become incredibly popular as the getaway of choice. We’re extremely lucky in this country as no matter where you are, you can pretty much hop into a car and a short drive later, be somewhere extraordinary.

This is especially true our biggest city, Auckland – the city of sails, which has so many day trip destinations on its doorstep. While some articles we’ve seen suggest places like the Bay of Islands and the Coromandel Peninsula as day trip options, we think that 3+ hours drive each way is a little unreasonable for that.

So, we decided to pick our 9 favourite self drive day trips from Auckland that are no more than 2 hours drive (give or take a few mins) from the CBD to give you plenty of quality time while you’re there.

Pick up your car from either of our Auckland car rental branches and head out for the day.

33 minutes drive from the city

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Evelina Mar (@evelinamar26) on Jul 25, 2020 at 5:51pm PDT

Puhoi Village is a quaint little place with a fascinating and unique history. Established in the 1860s just off the picturesque Puhoi River, the settlers were migrants from Bohemia (now known as the Czech Republic). The Puhoi Heritage Museum shares many great stories about this which makes the perfect starting point when you arrive. Once acquainted with its history, there are plenty of choices for things to do with one of the more unique things being trying some of its world-famous (in New Zealand), Puhoi Valley Cheese at the local cafe and shop.

2. Whangaparaoa

42 minutes drive from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Mathilde 🦋✨ (@ethime) on Jan 28, 2020 at 11:14pm PST

Auckland has no shortage of peninsulas within a short drive of the city and one of the best is the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The Whangaparaoa Peninsula is said to be the first landing point for Maori when they first came upon these lands some 800 years ago. First impressions must have been very positive back then as Whangaparaoa has some spectacular bays and beaches to set your eyes on. It is also home to Shakespeare Regional Park, a beautiful sanctuary of conservation and recreation. For movie buffs, the coastline of Whangaparaoa was also used in the filming of the 2018 blockbuster, The Meg, which is a fun fact to take with you.

3. Hunua Ranges

48 minutes drive from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Bethany Murphy-Suddens (@bethanysuddens) on Oct 9, 2018 at 11:31pm PDT

The Hunua Ranges Regional Park is an awesome place to visit as the largest area of native forest in the Auckland region. On arrival, you’re greeted to the fantastic sight of the Hunua Falls and from there you can follow any number of different walking tracks that take you around the park including one that includes glow worms. As well as all the natural beauty you’ll see including the flora, fauna and birdlife, you’ll also get to see the spectacular reservoirs and dams that constitutes the main supply of water for Aucklanders. A great choice for nature lovers.

4. Matakana

1 hour drive from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Matakana Market (@matakanafarmersmarket) on May 29, 2020 at 1:39pm PDT

Matakana has quickly become one of the most popular weekend getaway destinations for Aucklanders thanks to its fantastic Farmers Market every Saturday. This may be appealing or not for some people but it definitely adds to a great vibe with delicious food and produce available as well as live music, arts and crafts. The surrounding area is just as nice to explore as well with nearby vineyards like Brick Bay and Plume, beaches like Snells Beach and Omaha and a great little ice cream parlour called Charlie’s.

5. West Coast Beaches

All around 1 hour’s drive from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Manon 🌺 (@manonbibi_photography) on Mar 25, 2020 at 8:27am PDT

The West Coast beaches are a great place to spend a day for an altogether different type of coastal experience. You won’t find the golden sands and calm shores present on the East Coast of the country. Here, you’ll encounter black sand beaches and an untamed coastline clashing against the powerful force of the sea. It’s an awesome sight to see and is one that offers a different type of scenery that is wild but calming in its own way. There are a number of beaches to choose from along the coast like Muriwai, Piha and Te Henga all with their own unique characteristics that include gannet colonies, surfing, walks, waterfalls and more. Each one of them is a winner in our book.

1 hour 15 minutes drive from the city

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ben Coombe | NZ 🇳🇿 (@ben_coombe_photography) on Jan 16, 2020 at 2:46pm PST

Awhitu is located on a beautiful peninsula just over an hour’s drive southwest of the CBD. It’s a lesser-known destination for Aucklanders which is great as it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle that comes with crowds. It has a lovely regional park that has some peaceful and serene coastal walks as well as some interesting historical sites as well. Driving to the top of the peninsula you can also visit the wonderful Manakau Heads Lighthouse which offers great elevated views across the Manukau Harbour and Tasman Sea. You might also be tempted to stop at Awhitu Wines Vineyard on the way back to take home a nice bottle of Peninsula Chardonnay too.

7. Hamilton

1 hour 28 minutes from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Hamilton Gardens, New Zealand (@hamiltongardens) on Sep 17, 2020 at 10:51pm PDT

The biggest city within driving distance of Auckland is Hamilton, a very easy drive down State Highway 1 and a nice place to spend a day too. Hamilton has some great natural features within its boundaries which include the mighty Waikato River (the longest river in New Zealand) and the picturesque Hamilton Lake Domain. It also has a spectacular display of natural beauty that’s been curated by hand in the Hamilton Gardens. Easily its most popular attraction, the Hamilton Gardens has over 20+ gardens and walks with a diverse range of flowers, plants, trees, arrangements and displays to see and enjoy. It’s an Instagrammers paradise and one you won’t want to miss.

8. Waiheke Island

2 hours (including car ferry) from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Martin Mac Mahon (@martin.mac.mahon) on Jun 17, 2020 at 1:40am PDT

Most people think of Waiheke Island as a destination by foot and ferry but there is also a car ferry service that you can take as well. There are quite a few advantages to taking a car to Waiheke that might not be obvious at first glance. Waiheke is bigger than you might think and having a car makes it so much easier to get to attractions at different parts of the island, whether its the Man O War Vineyard on the Eastern side or Oneroa Village, 35 mins drive to the west. You can also bring more things with you, like a boot load of gear for the beach or goodies for a pleasant picnic in the sun. You’ll also have the freedom and flexibility to do things at your own pace without having to wait for the local busses and/or taxis which means you can make the most of all the awesome things to see and do there .

Bonus: In late June 2022, we opened our latest car rental branch on Waiheke. As well as bringing our award-winning customer service and modern fleet of rental cars to Waiheke, we are also offering bike and e-bike hire on the island – a great way to get around. Check out our all-new Waiheke car rental branch today.

9. Hobbiton

2 hours and 4 minute drive from the city.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Hobbiton Movie Set (@hobbitontours) on Oct 8, 2020 at 10:35am PDT

The furthest day trip recommendation on this list is one that’s well worth the drive time. That’s because it literally takes you to another world – the world of Middle Earth. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, Hobbiton will already be on your life’s bucket list if you haven’t been already. It’s an immaculate recreation of the actual set used in Sir Peter Jackson’s epic films with hobbit holes that looked like they’ve been lived in for years. If you’re really keen (as many fans are) you’re more than welcome to dress up as a character from Middle Earth to make the trip all the more memorable. We also recommend a pint or two of Hobbit ale at the Green Dragon Inn.

  • Day trips from Auckland

Roxanne de Bruyn

Roxanne de Bruyn

New Zealand

Stretching from beautiful, sandy beaches in the North to the Bombay Hills in the South, the Auckland region has many hidden gems which most travellers never see. There’s a lot to see and do in Auckland, however, to get the most out of your stay, you really need to go beyond the city centre.

Expand your horizons and take one (or more) of these day trips to get a taste of how diverse and beautiful Auckland really is. Just be aware that you may need to hire a car , as public transport to some of these places is sporadic at best.

  • West Coast beaches

A forest walk followed by a black-sand beach

Blue skies and black sand at Piha Beach.

Auckland’s west coast is a stretch of black-sand surf beaches, wild, rough and absolutely stunning. The dark sand and large waves give these beaches a moody, ethereal quality and the nearby Waitakere Ranges offer a green backdrop to this striking coastline. While gorgeous in the summer, these beaches are also wonderful to visit during the winter, when the heat rising from the black sand isn’t as oppressive. The most popular beaches are Muriwai, Bethells, Piha and Karekare, where the Piano was filmed.

The West Coast is about a 40-minute drive from the city centre. Start your day with a short walk in the beautiful Waitakere Ranges - I suggest you pick one with a waterfall - then head to the beach for lunch. Take a picnic and make a day of it, or enjoy the Kiwi favourite of fish-and-chips at the beach (there are small caravans selling food at Muriwai and Bethells). Just remember to take care – the currents on the west coast are very strong, so remember to swim between the flags.

  • Whatipu Beach

Take a tiki tour to an isolated spot

The beautiful, isolated Whatipu Beach.

For a truly isolated experience of New Zealand, visit Whatipu Beach, situated at the at the very edge of the Waitakere Ranges. A rugged and remote place, the beach seldom has more than a handful of visitors and it can be hard to believe you’re so close to a major city. It’s an odd, beautiful place , which many locals have never seen, and when you’re here it’s easy to image you’re standing on the edge of the world.

It’s a lovely drive from the city to Whatipu – if you go directly, it takes about an hour, but there are many lovely places to stop along way. Have a coffee or morning tea in Titirangi village, the centre of an artsy Auckland suburb which is nestled in trees with lovely ocean views. Then continue towards Huia, stopping at the beautiful viewpoints for a couple of photos. From there, the road winds over a hill through the bush (and is gravel in places) before emerging in Whatipu, a crescent of black sand with contrasting with the blue Pacific Ocean.

  • Goat Island

Go snorkelling with the fish, followed by a delicious lunch

Goat Island Marine Reserve

A beautiful marine reserve in the north of Auckland, Goat Island is the perfect local spot for snorkelling. The beach is gravel and not the best for sunbathing, however, it’s one of the few places where you can see full-sized fish in the shallows. Swim with the snapper, blue maomao, and red and blue cod, among others, and you may even see the occasional cray fish hiding in the rocks. From the shore, it’s a short swim to nearby goat island.

Otherwise, if snorkelling or diving isn’t your thing, see the seabed from the glass-bottomed boat. At low tide, you can also walk to the beautiful Pakiri Beach from Goat island, passing a pink sand beach (with a small waterfall if there’s been recent rainfall) along the way. For lunch, head to the delightful Leigh Sawmill Café or bring a picnic.

  • Rangitoto Island

Explore Auckland's youngest volcano and enjoy sweeping harbour views

Looking at Rangitoto Island from Auckland's North Shore

The youngest volcano in Auckland, Rangitoto Island emerged from the sea 600 years ago, taking its distinct place in the city’s landscape. Visible from any east coast beach, Rangitoto is a perfect cone against the sky, and, rather than just admiring it from afar, you can visit the island yourself (don’t worry, it’s a dormant volcano).

Only a 25-minute ferry ride from the city, you’ll find yourself on a small island in the middle of brilliant, blue water. Once there, choose a trail through the native bush and over the grey lava flows. Unsurprisingly, walking up the summit is the most popular option. It takes about an hour and once there, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Hauraki. There are also a number of longer walks, including the option to walk to nearby Motutapu Island at low-tide. Just remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring food and drinks with you, as there are no shops on the island.

  • Awhitu Peninsula

A scenic drive and visit to the historic Manukau Heads lighthouse

Manukau Heads Lighthouse in Awhitu Peninsula

For a different perspective of Auckland, head South to the whitewashed lighthouse on the Manukau Heads. It’s one of the few lighthouses in New Zealand that’s open to the public and the views from the top of amazing. The coast out there is remote and wild, however there are also a number of walks on the peninsula and some safe, white-sand beaches.

Getting to Awhitu Peninsula from Auckland involves a long yet scenic and beautiful. If you want to stay longer, try glamping or book a romantic stay at Castaways Resort.

  • Waiheke Island

Wineries, long lunches and sandy beaches

Mudbrick vineyard and restaurant on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.

A trip to Auckland isn't complete without visiting nearby Waiheke Island. A 35-minute ferry ride from the city, Waiheke has a large range of excellent wineries and white sand beaches. Spend your day wine tasting or relaxing by the beach. Then enjoy a long lunch at one of the wonderful restaurants or beautiful wineries on Waiheke Island .

If you aren't sure where to go, Mudbrick has a lovely restaurant and gorgeous views, while Stonyridge offers a more relaxed vibe and occasionally hosts music festivals. Mediterranean-style restaurants Casita Miro and Poderi Cristi are also excellent options for a beautiful long lunch. Just keep in mind that Waiheke is larger than you may think, so be sure to organise transport from the ferry.

  • Puhoi and Wenderholm

A Bohemian settlement, beautiful beach and excellent cheese

A summer's day at Wenderholm Beach

Puhoi is a charming Bohemian settlement in northern Auckland, nestled in the nearby farmland. Stop by the pretty church and visit the museum, chronicling the lives of the Czech settlers who first arrived in New Zealand in 1863. While you’re in the area, enjoy a swim at this beautiful Wenderholm Beach, with crystal water, grassy parkland and beautiful views.

If you’re after something a bit more active, you can even kayak down the Puhoi River to Wenderholm – a lovely trip which culminates at a picture-perfect, sandy beach. A leisurely lunch at the Puhoi Valley Cafe (one of New Zealand's great cheesemakers) in a countryside setting completes a perfect day.

  • Out of Auckland

Exploring further afield

Glowworms in Waitomo Caves.

If you are short of time, but want to see more of our beautiful country, here are some day trip options out of the greater Auckland area. Just be aware that the travel times are somewhat longer.

About an hour and a half out of Auckland, Hamilton is a small but lovely city, situated on the banks of the Waikato River. The city centre is very walkable with the main road lined with restaurants, shops and bars. Hamilton Botanical Gardens is a highlight of any visit, with beautiful themed gardens including traditional Maori, Italian renaissance and Japanese styles. The nearby Waikato Museum and art gallery are also worth visiting.

Just two hours' drive from Auckland, on the outskirts of Matamata, you'll find Hobbiton, the set from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Hobbiton is beautifully presented and larger than you'd expect. Visiting the Hobbiton movie set is a must if you're a fan of the films or just want to see a large scale film set in New Zealand. You need to take a tour to visit the set and there are also options which include brunch or dinner for an extra cost.

Waitomo Caves

A popular tourist attraction, the Waitomo Caves are known for their glowworms, which light up the vast caverns with hundreds of twinkling lights. The caves are extensive and there are a number of ways to explore them, including cave walks, boat rides, and black water rafting. There are options for all levels of fitness and ability and the caves are really beautiful. The caves are just over two hours from Auckland CBD and there are tours available. Go during the week for a quieter visit.

Karangahake Gorge

This historic walkway follows the old railway line through a canyon between the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges. Only 90 minutes out of Auckland, the Karangahake Gorge manages to combine the history of the goldrush with a beautiful natural setting. In short, it's a lovely place for walks, cycling and photography. Bring a picnic with you or stop for lunch at the cafe or winery in the gorge.

75 Free and Nearly Free Things to Do in Auckland New Zealand

Auckland as seen from North Head in Devonport New Zealand

Auckland is a piece of paradise loaded with free and inexpensive things to see and do. However, New Zealand’s largest city has a bad rap as being expensive. In part, it’s earned, but in truth, there are plenty of fabulous free things to do in Auckland.

It’s an ideal city for those seeking relaxation, entertainment, culinary excellence, cultural experiences, or adrenaline rush activities. It is my city, and today I will share its secrets.

Reflecting the natural beauty one expects to find in New Zealand, Auckland is nestled between two major bodies of water. Lush green parks line the city’s 1,600km sparkling blue coastline. Visitors rarely find themselves more than 5km from the sea. On sunny weekend days, one glance at the harbour, and you will know why it’s nicknamed the City of Sails.

There are so many fun free things to do in Auckland. It is a city made for walking, cycling, sailing, dining, relaxing, or a bungy jump. It is home to impressive museums, tempting restaurants, and colourful nightlife. While there are plenty of things to do in Auckland for free, to round out the list, I included a few special activities that are not so free (labelled with $).

Founded in 1840, Auckland’s short history includes influences from the indigenous Maori people. Today, it is home to nearly one-third of the country’s population. It has earned a reputation as a family-friendly, active, and safe city.

Although most of the Auckland destinations on this page are free, some have entry fees. While we work with many different companies, we are finding the best prices in Auckland at  Bookme .

Auckland volcanoes north of the Waitemata Harbour

City walks, naturally free attractions in auckland, beautiful gardens are found on most lists of free things to do in auckland, west auckland parks, free entry in auckland for locals, markets and other shopping in auckland, not so free animal viewing, free things to do in auckland at night, affordable, but not free things to do in auckland at night, more free things to do in auckland, adrenaline adventures are not among the free things to do in auckland, but discounts are often available, getting to auckland activities, with so many free things to do in auckland, why would you ever want to leave, views from the summit of extinct volcanoes (one of the best free activities in auckland).

Auckland sits on the remnants of 48 dormant and extinct volcanoes. Not surprisingly, some of the best views in the city are found at the summit of some of these volcanoes. And best of all, whether you walk, bike, drive or jog, getting to the top is always one of the free things to do in Auckland.

View of the Mt Eden crater and city at the top of Mt. Eden. It is one many extinct volcanoes in New Zealand

  • Rangitoto Island: Auckland’s youngest and largest volcanic field can be seen from much of the shoreline facing the Hauraki Gulf. Daily ferries go out to Rangitoto ( check for discounts ) and other Hauraki Gulf Islands from Auckland or from Devonport. From Rangitoto’s summit, enjoy the spectacular city skyline, explore lava caves, view the world’s largest Pohutukawa forest, or watch the sunset. A moderate level of fitness is required for hiking to the top.
  • Mount Eden: A short walk to the summit of the Mount Eden domain is instantly rewarded with dramatic 360-degree views from the highest natural point in the city. However, many consider the 50-metre-deep crater (now grass-covered) that many consider the highlight of this visit. Interestingly, from the top of the crater, you are at nearly the same height as the viewing platform on the Sky Tower .
  • Auckland Domain: Auckland’s oldest park is home to extensive forested walking trails, impressive sculptures, and plenty of spots for picnic or sport. In addition, you will find the Auckland Museum, Wintergardens , Wintergarden Cafe, and the city hospital on the Domain.
  • One Tree Hill: Auckland’s second-largest volcanic field, adjacent to Cornwall Park, offers lovely views, a historic obelisk, and the gravesite of a national hero. Interestingly, today you will find several youthful trees, replacing the “one-tree” that was destroyed in protest.

Entrance to a tunnel at North Head Historic Reserve, one of the free activities in Auckland New Zealand

  • Mt. Victoria in Devonport: My favourite view of the Auckland skyline is seen near sunset from Mount Victoria in Devonport. Also at the top are iconic red and white “mushroom” painted vent caps dotting the fields, a tourist favourite photo spot. There are both buses and a ferry that travel between Auckland city and Devonport.
  • North Head historic reserve in Devonport: As you enter the former military tunnel complex hidden in the hillside at North Head, you leave behind expansive panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland city. It is easy to understand why North Head was chosen as a coastal defence site.

Here are a few of the best walks in the city . Check Auckland Transit for more free walking (and cycling) routes in the city.

  • Coastal path: With so much coastline, there are miles of beachfront path options. Two of my favourite coastal walks are Tamaki Drive from the city to Mission Bay and the coastal path from Milford to Takapuna .
  • Coast to Coast Walk Auckland: Fairly unique to Auckland, you can walk across the country from Waitemata Harbour to Manukau Harbour. In about 5 hours, you will pass suburban streets, five volcanic fields, and several historical sites.
  • Wynyard Quarter: This redeveloped district is an ideal spot to stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants, bring kids to a large playground, visit a community garden, or just relax on giant wooden recliners.
  • Heritage walk: Take this self-guided tour of some of the city’s most historically significant and beautiful heritage buildings.
  • Walk or cycle on the Te Ara I Whiti . This former motorway turned into a pink lightpath lets pedestrians and cyclists bypass the autos on the city roads.

Inside one of the two Victorian style glass-top greenhouses that make up Wintergardens, one of the free things to do in Auckland New Zealand.

  • Auckland Botanic Garden: roam through the 156 acres (including 10 acres of native forest) that attract nearly one million visitors annually.
  • Parnell Rose Garden: Be enchanted by the over 5,000 flowering bushes in springtime.
  • Domain Wintergardens: Originally built in the early 1900s to provide garden viewing in the winter months, today the Wintergardens have a fernery, an ornate courtyard, and two Victorian-style greenhouses.

Hiking regional parks and reserves are naturally free things to do in Auckland

Each of the 36 regional parks offers something different, but all have opportunities for hiking in Auckland. Nevertheless, I do have several favourite urban parks .

Watching the black swans at Western Springs Park in New Zealand

  • Western Springs: A flock of black swans live on the artificial lake that was originally built (1875) as a reservoir for Auckland water.
  • Cornwall Park: A peaceful park with tree groves, gentle walking paths, sheep and cattle, a playground, and two historic buildings. At one end of Cornwall Park is One Tree Hill volcano.
  • Shakespear Park: Hike through paddocks and on trails at Shakespear Park at the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The park is home to the only mainland little-spotted Kiwi birds; although you won’t see them, sometimes at night, you can hear their call.
  • Tiritiri Matangi : An open bird sanctuary island, here you will discover several species of endangered birds, including the once thought to be extinct Takahe. You will need to take a ferry ($$) out to the island .

Shakespear Park with Rangitoto Island in the background

  • Waitakere Ranges: There are over 250km of sub-tropical rainforest trails making up the Waitakere Ranges walks and plenty of waterfalls. The trails range from family-friendly to the 80km multiday Hilary Trail. I mportant, as of April 2018, many of the trails are closed to protect the trees from Kauri Dieback disease. Here is a list of open trails .
  • Arataki Visitor Centre: The gateway to the subtropical rainforest, the Arataki Visitors Centre has stunning views overlooking the rainforest, information on the parklands, extensive Māori history and several impressive carvings. It is one of the highlights of West Auckland .
  • Manukau Heads Lighthouse: Climb to the top of the lighthouse and be rewarded with stunning harbour views over the Awahiti Peninsula.

Art and historical museums in Auckland

There are plenty of free indoor activities. Auckland is home to several interesting museums. Most offer free entry either to everyone or only to locals. See my favourite Auckland museums.

Maori waka at the Auckland Museum in New Zealand - One of the must see places to visit in Auckland

  • Pah Homestead – Worth a visit to see either the historic home or the frequently renewed contemporary art collection.
  • Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Art Gallery, Auckland – Located in Titirangi, the contemporary art galleries of Te Uru will be different on almost every visit.
  • MOTAT ($) – Auckland’s Museum of Transport and Technology is a hands-on opportunity to discover the country’s advancements in transportation and technology. ( Check for discounts )

  • Torpedo Bay Navy Museum (Free entry for New Zealanders) – Located in Devonport, it’s an easy ferry ride from the city if you don’t have a car. The National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy is full of surprises, taking us through both war and peacetime naval activities by the men and women who protect and patrol our waterways.
  • New Zealand Maritime Museum (Free entry for Aucklanders): From the dugout canoes that brought the first Polynesian people to modern world-class racing vessels, New Zealand’s nautical history comes to life at the National Maritime Museum .

Whether or not shopping is one of your free things to do in Auckland depends on if you are a window shopper or not.

Queen Street is one of the Auckland points of interest for most visitors to New Zealand

  • Queen Street: Every city has a street that does it all; in Auckland, this is Queen Street . This main thoroughfare is the heart of the central business district (CBD), a shopper’s paradise, and a tourist destination.
  • Otara Flea Market: A Saturday morning market located in the car park of the Otara Town Centre. This is the largest Polynesian-style market in New Zealand.
  • City Farmers’ Market at Britomart: Also on Saturday mornings, this farmers’ market is the place to get fresh produce.

  • K-Road during the day: On Karangahape Road, you will find an eclectic mix of fashion, second-hand shops, art galleries, and vegetarian cafes.
  • Auckland Night Markets: At seven different locations throughout the city.

Animal viewing

Sealife and birds constitute New Zealand’s primary wildlife viewing opportunities, and, if you know where to go, there are some amazing free options.

  • Gannet Colony at Muriwai Beach – Late August to March is the best time to view the colony of up to 1,200 Australian Gannet pairs that fly over 2,000 km to breed on Muriwai’s clifftop. While this is and easy place to visit on your own, we recently learned of an option that includes both gannet colony and local vineyard tour .
  • Goat Island: This wildlife/marine sanctuary is one of many popular day trips from Auckland. It is the best spot near Auckland for colourful (subtropical) snorkelling, SCUBA diving, or a glass-bottomed boat tour (check for discounts) .
  • Auckland Zoo ($$) – A family destination featuring New Zealand’s largest collection of native and exotic animals and traditional animals found at zoos. Reserve your often discounted day passes here

Watching the elephants at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand is one of the fun things to do in Auckland for kids

  • Butterfly Creek and Dinosaur Kingdom ($$) – A place for kids explore a tropical butterfly house or travel back to a time when dinosaurs ruled, made even better with discount entry tickets .
  • Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium ($$) – From the penguins in Antarctica to the sea life in local Auckland waters, if it lives in the Southern Ocean, you will find it at Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium . Built underground, it houses the world’s first walk-through acrylic tunnels that surround visitors with colourful marine life or shark-infested waters. Check for discount prices .
  • Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari (AWADS) ($$$) – Every moment on an Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari is exciting, but nothing tops the day’s first whale sighting. Not free, but it is the best thing I have ever done in Auckland. And best of all, depending on the day you choose, you can often get a discount with this link .

Nightlife in Auckland

If you know where to look, there are plenty of free things to do in Auckland at night in Auckland.

Young people attending the Frenzi Bar Crawl on a Thursday.

  • Watch or try Fire Spinning : On Sunday nights in Mission Bay or Wednesday nights the group Fire and Flow perfect their craft .
  • SkyCity Auckland Casino (Free to enter, pay to play): New Zealand’s largest casino is always open.
  • Bars and clubs : Many of the hotspots are free before 10 pm. Get an early start and have your hand stamped, thus allowing you free return later.
  • K-Road at Night: Karangahape Road is different at night when it’s the place to go for mixed and gay bars, strip clubs, and brothels (not free).
  • Free movies in Silo Park – Silo Cinema is a summertime event on Friday nights. In addition to free movies in Silo Park, there is the Auckland Council’s movies in park programme.

With so much to see and do in Auckland, it is a North Island must-see .

  • Auckland is an easy city to get around. There is excellent public transportation in the central city. However, there are less frequent options in the surrounding areas.
  • If you self-drive, note that car parking in the city is often shockingly expensive.
  • Taxis are available at busy downtown venues, or taxis or Uber can be called.

Any chance you can add the navy Museum to your list? It’s located on the waterfront in Devonport (Torpedo Bay). Entry is free for New Zealanders, and very cheap for international visitors. The museum itself is awesome, and you can combine it with a walk through the North Head tunnels. It’s one of Auckland’s hidden gems.

Thanks. Added.

Small side note. Any Auckland resident who has used the public transportation more than once would be able to inform you of its notoriety. It’s infamous for strikes, cancellations, delays and exorbitant ticket prices (relatively). Overuse/reliance on buses for transport is greatly hindering its hope for improvement and with Auckland traffic on the rise it won’t get better anytime soon. With NZ on the whole not having good infrastructure and poor management unwilling to take expert or outside advice, I wouldn’t expect this to change in the near future.

Going to Visit New Zealand next week as I don’t know much about it so I was looking for a blog to know the best things to there thanks for this information. As Know I know What to do there.

August 22, 2019 at 3:45 am

OK, I had NO idea that Aukland had volcanoes!! That is soooo cool. And I’ve always wanted to see a huge Gannet colony!!

April 23, 2019 at 1:54 pm

Aukland looks so beautiful, Rhonda! I’d really love to come visit sometimes. Too bad it’s so far from us. Hiking up to Mount Eden Volcano would be one of my favorite activities there. That green crater tells me that this volcano must be extinct for quite some time. I haven’t seen a green crater yet.

Those pictures are beautiful, I would love to visit your place.

I enjoyed this post Rhonda. The photos are great too. Thanks for the tour 🙂

October 25, 2017 at 12:49 pm

I’ ve always enjoyed visiting Aukland, Rhonda. You certainly give a brilliant outline of all the fun things to do there!

October 25, 2017 at 11:07 am

The Domain Wintergardens greenhouse is just beautiful! I’m a big garden/botanical adventure kinda gal so I’ll for sure be hitting up all those recommendations. Such a great list and I can’t wait to visit someday!

October 25, 2017 at 6:19 am

I have never really researched Auckland, but it definitely looks like my kind of city. I love having the convenience of a lot of things going on and a lively city, but I also want to be out in nature and from your extensive list it seems Auckland combines the best of both of those worlds. Sign me up for star gazing, collecting cockles and having a barbecue on the beach and visiting the volcanoes. The summer movies in the park also sound fun.

October 25, 2017 at 4:13 am

This article is a boon! There’s no better advice than advice from a local. I would love to hike (or drive) up the volcanos for panoramic views of the city! The scenery there looks stunning. The Auckland Museum sounds really interesting. The walking tours sound great too, especially the coast to coast trail. How amazing that you can go across the country in 5 hours!

I have a friend who just returned from New Zealand. Her pictures were amazing as are yours! I didn’t realize there were so many volcanoes there. The natural beauty is outstanding. I just wish it wasn’t such a long plane ride from the States.

October 23, 2017 at 1:00 am

Bookmarked your article, it’s going to be super useful. Since, New Zealand is an expensive destination, particularly for people from Asia like me. So, every penny counts on the trip. It’s awesome to know that there is so much to do and see while spending so less.

October 22, 2017 at 9:11 pm

I’m impressed at how much there is to see in Auckland! I’ve never been and didn’t realize there were dormant volcanoes there so that would definitely be my first port of call. The Domain Wintergardens look stunning too. Thanks for such an informative guide

October 24, 2017 at 9:43 am

The volcanoes blend in so easily to the landscape it can actually be a little unnerving once you stop and think about what you’re standing on. However, they’re all totally safe.

October 22, 2017 at 7:55 pm

It seems that visiting Aukland is a real deal, if there are so many free things to do there. Seeing how beautiful Auckland is, I begin to understand why you wanted to move to New Zealand. Great pictures, like always.

Wow, what a beautiful post. I’ve always dreamed one day to visit Auckland but never really thought about it since it seems so far away. Your photos are beautiful and make me want to go there badly. I am particularly interested in Moari history since I am also a Pacific Islander. Thank you for sharing so much valueable information on New Zealand. 🙂

New Zealand is definitely on my bucket list. It looks beautiful there. Even in the city. And, wow, I didn’t know there is volcanoes in a middle of the city.

October 22, 2017 at 1:30 pm

This list is full of awesome ideas! I can’t wait to visit New Zealand and will be saving this for when I go. Always need to know about the free things to do!

Lois Alter Mark

October 22, 2017 at 9:11 am

I am definitely saving this for when I finally visit Auckland. I would have thought it was so expensive there but your list is amazing and shows you don’t need to spend a lot of money to enjoy it. It seems like you can see so much just by walking.

October 24, 2017 at 9:38 am

Over the years, I’ve noticed how expensive Auckland is portrayed as, yet when we go up for a day trip we can always find something cheap to do. I hope you make it here.

October 22, 2017 at 8:54 am

I didn’t know that there were so many free things to do in Auckland. I love that you can walk so many different areas. And who knew that they had a goat island! I’ve been seeing cat cafes pop up in a lot cities from LA to Beijing!

October 22, 2017 at 5:28 am

wow I’m amazed that there are so many volcanoes surrounding Auckland! seems like a great city to visit if you also love the outdoors

October 22, 2017 at 3:15 am

Once again I have to say Rhonda, the picture of the city is beautiful. The entire blog has me wondering why I don’t live there. Amherstburg is OK must this area is very boring. The only thing about this area is the weather. It doesn’t have hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires that burn out the entire area and we get the 4 seasons as they should be Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Oh well. See ya.

October 22, 2017 at 12:49 am

That’s the most elaborately compiled list of things to do in Auckland I have seen. Guess I need to get rid of that Lonely planet now:) Jokes apart that really a great list. Guess you have travelled Auckland thoroughly!

October 21, 2017 at 11:29 pm

What an awesome comprehensive list of things to do in Auckland! I like particularly that you also included nighttime things to do in Auckland. Although we’ve been once it wasn’t with enough time to leave the city and all its got to offer. The volcanoes and trail walks are now definitely on our to do list when we return!

October 21, 2017 at 11:04 pm

What an excellent and useful round-up. I’m delighted that most of the museums are free – it always seems a shame when the pricing of what is National heritage prevents people from visiting

October 21, 2017 at 5:47 pm

Auckland, Auckand, Auckland. She has avoided me all these years of travel, but someday…maybe in a couple of years Jim and I will get there. We have never done anything on the North Island, so it’s a must. Every single one of the walks sounds great.

October 21, 2017 at 4:00 pm

What a list.

I’d love to see the gannett colony and of course would have to view those volcanoes up close and personal. So many things to do and all for free. Auckland has so much range as a city. Thanks for sharing.

October 21, 2017 at 2:40 pm

I know a newlywed couple who are going to Nrew Zealand in their honeymoon so I will e-mail this blog post to them. There looks like so many fun things to do there.

October 21, 2017 at 9:11 am

we would definetely go for the Dinosaur Kingdom. The kids are now in the “Dinosaour fever”. Maybe I have had a bit of influence on it, but I prefer them leaning dino’s names than watching TV.

October 20, 2017 at 4:34 pm

I agree! Auckland is a fabulous city and you dont have to spend a fortune to enjoy yourself. We took the kids to the Basement Theatre comedy night and it ws $5 a ticket! It was such a bargain, so cheap for an evenings entertainment. Loved this extensive list Rhonda, thank you!

Looks like there is tons to do there without spending any money which is great as the flight there would be pretty expensive for us. The art museum sound like a real unique experience with the local art there. What an incredible looking city too. It makes you want to go for one of those walks.

October 20, 2017 at 9:25 am

I wish my husbands work would take him downunder, but sadly I believe it will be a while before we make it that way as it is just to long of a flight to make with children. Someday. So lovely!

October 21, 2017 at 8:45 am

Actually, when our kids were little they generally did better on the long-hauls than their parents. LOL. Seriously, they slept most of the way, and even in coach, they were small enough to be able to get somewhat comfortable in the seats.

I never knew about the volcano connection, and that itself is convince me to include the city in my itinerary for my long-waited trip to New Zealand. There is so much more than adventures, and I think I will especially love the museum – I am fascinated by the history of Maori and this would be a great place to learn more! Plus, the adventures, of course 🙂

October 19, 2017 at 4:58 pm

This is awesome! for anyone who is traveling on a budget, this is really helpful. Thank you for sharing and i will sure to save this for future reference.

Rhonda, this is such a great resource. I’d love to travel in New Zealand someday. Mostly I want to visit because my favorite Sauvignon Blancs are made there, but a stop in Aukland would certainly be on my itinerary. I love how you’ve broken this into categories for easy researching. I’ll want to refer back to the sections on city walks and things to do at night, for sure! I love when cities offer free city walks. I feel like it’s a great way to learn about a new place but also a great way to get oriented for any adventures you may have over the next few days. I’d already heard great things about Auckland, but knowing there’s all this free stuff makes it even more appealing!

Cornwall Park and all of those gorgeous cows would be my pick. The gardens are all lovely, too. Gracious. so many parks to choose from!

What a comprehensive guide of things to do in Auckland. Will you keep this updated? Then I would like to bookmark it, as it will take us a number of years before we visit New Zealand. My wife and I keep saying that we save us NZ until we’re too old to travel any further. 😀 Already now I dread long distance flights. Greetings from the half-ozzie!

October 19, 2017 at 6:46 pm

My plan is to keep it updated, and much of it won’t change, as they are free regional parks, hikes, waterfalls, etc, that shouldn’t move.

That first suggestion, that photo of the Mount Eden Auckland Volcano just blows me away with the immediate backdrop of the city right there! I think the flora within the city excites me the most, including the botanical garden and parks. When it comes to galleries / museums, I would definitely make time for the Auckland Art Gallery, especially to see the national collections over international. And then the markets, I bloody loooove flea markets and food markets, so I need to make sure I allocate enough time to really really browse!

October 19, 2017 at 7:02 am

Local parks always have a pull on me, great to see a nice variety here. FREE (!) entry to art museums is a massive plus anywhere. A pairing of those two would keep me quite occupied.

What a fantastic list of the things to do in Auckland – and I love that most of them are free! I had no idea there was so much to see and do in the city. I think it’s time to pay Auckland another visit!

Thx for this fab post on Auckland. I’ve not yet been to New Zealand, but it’s definitely on my list! Have pinned your post.

One of my few regrets was not seeing NZ when we lived in Aus. Arguably, it’s not close, but it is closer than where I am now (London). Cheers!

Good overview! The place looks pretty… .but not the one I would go. I have friends who stay in Auckland for a long time, they told everything. It looks to me an almost same calm place as Finland (where I live). When I am traveling I look for busy cities, huge mountains or something rather extreme. Do you think Auckland would be a good place for me to go?

October 19, 2017 at 6:37 pm

Yes, I would imagine Finland to be quite a bit like New Zealand. Auckland is the port of entry into New Zealand, so if you come to our beautiful country, you will probably be here at least a night, so you may as well have a list of things to do .

Beautiful Auckland is on my bucket list so that is helpful We have been on the airport lots of times but haven’t been in the city yet

Near the airport is Butterfly Creek and Villa Maria Winery, so even if you can’t go far, you could visit those two.

This is a fantastic list Rhonda – Auckland is my home town and I’m always adding places to my list for my next visit. I’ll be back again in 3 weeks for a few months and I can’t wait! I would also add the La Cigalle Food and Farmer’s Market to the list – it’s a great little market 🙂

New Zealand is on my bucket list and the reason why I Went there by know is because I am not allowed to take more than 2 weeks holiday. I need at least one month to discover this beautiful land and one day I will make it there. Thank you for taking time to put together this impressive list.

October 18, 2017 at 9:53 am

Depending on where you live now, I would agree. New Zealand is a country worth taking some serious time to explore. We have been here 16 years and still find new places. A month would be a great start.

October 17, 2017 at 10:03 am

You’ve stirred up happy memories Rhonda! I used to live in Auckland and the Muriwai Beach gannet colony was one of my favourite places in New Zealand (and we travelled a fair bit). It helps if you love magnificent birds but it’s also such a beautifully wild place with pounding surf and an endless stretch of beach! During the summer breeding season, the birds cover the cliffs and provide magnificent flying displays as they battle winds to land in their tiny nesting space! The cafe is welcoming too.

Another favourite you mention is Tiritiri Matangi – a magical boat trip out to a bird lover’s paradise filled with birdsong. Finally, Shakespear Park – a stunning headland where you can ride your bike high up for views or wander along the beach. Look out for New Zealand dotterels nesting on the beach – their nests are scrapes in the sand that are easily trodden on. See the iconic pukeko or swamp hen wandering, an amazing blue bird with red legs that feature on pottery, postcards, you name it!

Finally, Mount Eden for the best views in Auckland. Pick the early morning or out of peak season to avoid sharing the experience with coach loads of people!

Thank you, Rhonda, for bringing back memories! I’m living in Norfolk, UK now – not as dramatic but every bit as beautiful in an English kind of way!

October 18, 2017 at 9:31 am

Glad to bring up the memories. I agree, Muriwai Beach, and for me the Waitakere’s are one of the best spots in our beautiful country. We also love TiriTiri Matangi, and live pretty close, as we are out on the end of Whangaparaoa. In the last five years, Shakespear Park has become a bird sanctuary with a huge predator-proof fence protecting much of the parkland. Little spotted kiwi birds were even released earlier in the year. Being that I can walk to the park from my home, it will probably always top my list.

October 17, 2017 at 9:59 am

we are going next year. Won’t have time to do all of them but I’m going to give it a good go!

October 17, 2017 at 6:36 am

What a comprehensive guide to New Zealand! Sadly, I’ve never been but even more sad is I’ve always heard how expensive NZ was to visit, but this is quite to the contrary. Looks like there is so much green space, parks, and gardens to explore, and picnic at for free – and those volcanoes! How cool are they right around the city!

October 17, 2017 at 9:22 am

New Zealand is expensive, on a world scale. Accommodations, food, clothing, cost of living, etc. However, if you look around there are plenty of free things to do. We love living here.

October 17, 2017 at 4:38 am

If you love city life then there are tons of things to do. I’ll bet you could do post after post on this subject.

Have a fabulous day. ☺

There are SO MANY free things to do in Auckland, how cool is that? We were there last year and did a few of these, but hardly had 2 days in the city so missed a lot of things. But I am so in love with New Zealand that I am sure I’ll head back one day. Super list here, thanks for sharing.

12 child-friendly locations to explore with your children this winter in Auckland

Lucy slight.

Many parents struggle to find family-friendly activities to do over winter that don't cost the earth, so a mum of two set about making it easier to explore with little ones in tow by launching an app. Photo / Getty Images.

With winter here and rainy days becoming increasingly more frequent, the search for child-friend activities will be a focus for many parents. While there’s always a local playground to frequent or a mall to visit, it can often be intimidating to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, especially with volatile toddlers in tow. Lucy Slight sought the insight of an expert for a hot list of places that have been vetted already, to take the uncertainty out of embarking on a new expedition with the kids this winter.

Parents know the struggle of finding activities to do with the kids at all times of the year, but especially in winter. There are many boxes that need to be ticked; entertaining for the whole family, facilities set up with children in mind, food nearby to satiate the constant hunger and in the current financial climate, affordability is appreciated too.

When a new app called Roam With Kids launched earlier this month, it climbed to the 11th spot on the New Zealand Apple App Store chart on day one and hit number four within three days, proving parents are desperate to find child-friendly places to explore in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Created by Auckland mother of two, Renata Wiles, the app (which costs $2.99 per month) features more than 200 spots across the super city, including playgrounds, pram-suitable walks, indoor and outdoor activities and eateries the whole whanau will enjoy.

“Auckland has so many amazing child-friendly spots, and I wanted to create something that would give parents the confidence to explore areas of the city they were unfamiliar with, and save them time along the way,” says Wiles. “I know as a parent myself, the mental load of planning things to do each day can be a lot.”

Renata Wiles, founder of Roam with Kids. Photo / supplied.

Child-friendly winter activities that won’t break the bank

We asked Wiles to share a few of the best locations in Auckland for entertaining the kids over the cooler months.

Lunch spot with kid-friendly activities

Finding a cafe that your kids will enjoy as much as you is such a win, so I especially love a cafe with a full-sized playground. The Parkhouse in Whenuapai and Rise n’ Shine in Karaka are two of my favourite cafes with awesome outdoor playgrounds.

Playground with shelter

If you’re after a free indoor playground, Mitre10 and Bunnings are my go-to for fun indoor play and they also have great cafes. They’re accessible as they are all over Auckland, most stores have undercover parking, and the play areas are fenced too. They are a favourite with my community.

If you’re happy to chuck some raincoats on and just want to explore an awesome play space, Hayman Park in Manukau was renovated less than a year ago and has the largest climbing tower in Auckland. It also has a flying fox, a pump track and skate park, and heaps of equipment for all age ranges.

Budget-friendly indoor activity

We absolutely love the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum in Devonport (it’s free for New Zealand residents). There’s a cafe with an outside play area and the museum itself is great for kids, with a children’s room. They usually do some kind of activity in the school holidays, too, like a search and find.

If you have a toddler and need an indoor activity, Blend Cafe in Huapai has a free “Toddler Tuesday” sensory play. We’ve been a few times and made papier-mâché bowls, and played with chia seed slime. It’s great to meet those sensory needs somewhere else, so you don’t have to clean up at home.

Outdoor winter activity off the beaten track

Exploring the tunnels at Maungauika North Head in Devonport is always a favourite for our family. It’s such a fun activity and you can shelter if there’s a downpour. Make sure you take a torch and the kids are wearing covered shoes.

The Auckland Botanic Gardens is another cool spot to go with kids; it has free entry and is beautiful to wander round. The children’s garden is really fun too.

We also love Ambury Farm in Mangere, all year round. It’s a working farm in a regional park, so you get to see heaps of different farm animals up close. Best of all, it’s free.

Pram-friendly walk

One of my favourites is the walk up Maungawhau Mount Eden . It’s pram-friendly all the way to the summit (the crater loop isn’t), and the views of the city are amazing. If your little one is happy in a carrier, another place worth heading to is the Lookout Track at Hunua Falls . It only takes 20 minutes, so is suitable for little hikers, and not too long with a carrier either.

Day 1 Auckland

Arrive at any time.

Day 2 Auckland

Take an orientation walk in Auckland, one of the most multicultural cities in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ll then catch a ferry to beautiful Waiheke Island, a haven of world-class vineyards and idyllic beaches. Visit wineries to learn about New Zealand's burgeoning wine industry and the history of viticulture in the country while sampling some of the local blends.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Meals included:, day 3 auckland/rotorua.

Drive to the lakeside town of Rotorua, situated over an active geothermal zone and known for its volcanic features and rich Maori heritage. Stop en route at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and take a boat ride through this spectacular underground realm to see thousands of flickering glowworms light up in the dark.

Day 4 Rotorua

On a full-day excursion, head to the Maori-owned Kohutapu Lodge, our base for exploring New Zealand's indigenous culture. See ancient rock carvings and learn about their spiritual significance to the Maori people, both past and present. Watch as a hangi lunch is prepared the traditional way--buried in an underground pit—and enjoy the resulting feast with your Maori hosts. After lunch, take a walk through the 800-year-old podocarp trees in Whirinaki Rainforest, learning the history of the forest and spotting endemic birds and medicinal plants. Return to Rotorua for an optional evening meal or a well-deserved soak in the hot springs.

Day 5 Rotorua/Christchurch

Enjoy time at leisure this morning before catching a flight to Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island. Take some time to explore this small city on your own.

Day 6 Christchurch/Franz Josef

Board the TranzAlpine train—one of the world’s most scenic rail routes—for a breathtaking journey through verdant plains, beech forests, and majestic, misty mountains. After a whistle stop at Arthur’s Pass—the highest pass in the Southern Alps— continue to the end of the line in Greymouth, gateway to the West Coast. Continue on a private vehicle to a rainforest lodge near the town of Franz Josef, our home for the next two nights.

Day 7 Franz Josef

Discover the natural wonders of the Franz Josef area on your own today. Opt to embark on a walk in the area; soak in natural hot pools surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery; and more.

Day 8 Franz Josef/Queenstown

Set out towards Queenstown on a drive along the South Island’s magnificent west coast. Stop at tranquil Lake Matheson, where, on a clear day, you can capture a postcard-perfect image of New Zealand’s highest peaks reflected in the water. Continue to Queenstown, pausing for short walks through the rainforest and visits to picturesque waterfalls.

Day 9 Fiordland National Park Day Trip

Discover the glacially carved wilderness of Fiordland National Park on a cruise. Glide past shimmering waterfalls and towering cliffs, and look out for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and little blue penguins with our naturalist guides. Travel back to shore, head to Queenstown for the night.

Day 10 Queenstown

After breakfast spend the rest of the day at leisure in this fun-loving lakeside town, known as the adventure capital of the world. Opt to visit a vineyard for a tour, or simply wander around, cafe hopping and sightseeing.

Day 11 Queenstown

The day is yours to explore Queenstown. Choose to cruise lake Wakatipu on a historic steamer; experience a thrilling jet boat ride; or visit a local winery to sample the region’s award-winning vintages. This evening, enjoy a cable car ride to the top of Bob’s Peak for panoramic vistas of Lake Wakatipu and the Southern Alps and then have dinner together as a group.
