Alicante TRAM – Prices, Timetables, Routes. All You Need to Know
Alicante TRAM is a rail service that connects Alicante city centre with San Juan Beach and neighbouring towns such as El Campello, Benidorm and Denia.
The TRAM service operates in underground tunnels in Alicante city centre and overground in the rest of the line. There are 6 TRAM lines split into 3 zones . Prices vary from 1.45€ single ticket for one zone to 3,90€ for single tickets for the 3 zones and the equivalent of 0,76€ to 1.90€ when using the most affordable travel cards . Night services are available on summer weekends at the same price. Frequencies vary per line.
Alicante’s TRAM service is reliable but can be slower than the car on some routes. The service inherits the old “Trenet” rails tracks and the updates from the old network focused on electrification and safety but not speed. Let’s see all you need to use this service, including pricing, routes and schedules.
How to Pay for The TRAM
Alicante’s TRAM has a mixture of fenced underground and unfenced overground stations.
At the underground stations, the tickets must be paid in advance on the machines around the stations and validated at the fence. A travel card is also valid.
At overground stations, the payment must be done inside the TRAM train . This is a bit counterintuitive, as the stations don’t have any payment machines available. The payment is done inside the train. The travel cards are also validated on the train.
All payment machines allow for: card payment, cash payment, and travel card recharge.
The TRAM train in Alicante has 6 lines:
In many of those stations, you can transfer from one line to the other if needed. All trains (except for line L5) stop at Luceros, Mercado and MARQ-Castillo.
There are 3 TRAM zones: A, B and C. And 2 special subzones: T1 and T2, serve as small zones in nearby stops located between the main zones. One zone fare is 1.45€, moving between two zones is 2,80€ and moving 3 zones is 3,90€. More details on prices and fares are down in this article, including return tickets and travel cards.
Click here to download the full-resolution Alicante’s Zone Map.
Here is a list of the main routes and the time it takes to complete the trip:
The single ticket price for one zone, such as Alicante-San Juan or Campello, is 1.45€ and the return ticket costs 2,50€.
If you move between 2 zones the price is 2,80€ and 4,80€ for the return ticket.
Moving the 3 zones cost 3,90€ and the fare for the return ticket is 6,65€.
If you are going to use the tram often it might be worth getting a travel card pass; which is a rechargeable travel card that costs 2€.
The fares go down by more than 45% by paying with a travel card bonus. The same travel card pass can be used by more than one person on the same trip.
Temporary Discounts on Travel Card Bonus
From the 1st of February 2023 to the 31 of July 2024 there is a 50% discount on some of the travel cards.
This is due to a money injection in public transport the central government is undertaking through autonomics and local governments in order to keep the inflation rate lower.
The discounts are for the TRAM trains and MIA buses .
Note that the single trip fare remains at 1.45€.
The prices and fares for the travel card pass vary on the number of bought trips:
10 trips cost 4€ (normal price 8.00€) in between the same zone (0.40€ per trip, normal price 0.80€ per trip), 6€ (normal price 12,00€) in moving 2 zones (0.60€ per trip, normal price 1.20€ per trip) and 10€ per trip (normal price 20,00€) when moving 3 zones (1€ per trip, normal price 2€ per trip). A 24h for unlimited travelling in all zones is 8€.
30 trips cost 11.40€ (normal price 22.80€) (0.38€, normal price 0,76€ per trip), 17.10€ (normal price 34,20€) when moving 2 zones (0.57€, normal price 1,14€ per trip) and 3 zones commuting is 28.50€ (normal price 57,00€) (0.95€ per trip, normal price 1.90€ per trip).
Remember: The same bonus ticket can be used by several people on the same trip.
There is also a 24-hour ticket that can be used for as many trips and as many zones as wished during the activation day. It cost 4€ while bonified (8€ normal price).
The travel cards are different for each TRAM Zone and only allow trips in between the zone it is assigned to. As an example, if you have a 1 zone travel card but want to go from Alicante to Benidorm you will need to buy a ticket at the start of your journey in Alicante. Alternatively, a card can be recharged with trips valid for travelling in between zones.
Travel cards can be used only in the TRAM zone they have been habilitated for. Travel Card Mobilis bought for Tram Zone A can be used also in Alicante’s city buses .
Here is the fares summary table:
Free for Those Under 30
Another discount the government has kicked off is for those under 30 not to pay at all for the TRAM service in Alicante. The 100% discount is active from the 9th of October until the 30 of June 2024.
To qualify you just need to be under 30 years old and get a temporary carton travel card that will be attached to your Spanish ID card (DNI), your resident ID card (NIE) or your passport. To apply:
- Enter Tram De Alicante website . Inside the Bulletin Board, press “ Free Jove season ticket – Request an appointment by clicking on this link >>> “. You should be redirected to this page.
- Book an appointment to pick up your card in one of the TRAM De Alicante stations.
- Pick up the travel card and validate it every time you use the bus or TRAM.
NOTE: If you don’t have a Spanish DNI or NIE follow the instructions in this link. Essentially, you need help from someone with a DNI or NIE to book the appointment for you. Then, at the time you have the appointment, borrow her/his ID card. Showing your friends’ ID and your passport you will be able to pick up your free travel card.
Even though the process to get the free travel card is done using the TRAM website and offices in the stations the discount is valid for the bus services too.
Also, remind you that, to qualify, you don’t need to be a resident, be empadronado or live in Alicante. Just be 30 or less and have a valid ID card/passport.
Special Zones T1 and T2
There are a couple of special zones called T1 and T2 that are situated where the TRAM zones switch. So T1 is in between Zone A and Zone B. T2 is between Zone B and Zone C. When travelling inside the special zones the tram ticket to pay is just for 1 zone.
As an example, a traveller from Calpe to Altea would typically have to pay for a two-zone ticket (C to A). But both TRAM stops are inside the special zone T2. That means travellers from Calpe to Altea would need to pay a ticket fare equivalent to just one TRAM zone.
Other Travel Cards Discounts
There are also travel cards for young and senior people. Talk to the staff at Luceros station about how to get it and to know if you qualify.
How to Buy a Travel Pass Card
To buy a Travel Card in Alicante city you can go to Luceros Station or any kiosk in Alicante as the same travel card works on Alicante’s busses and TRAM Zone A. At Lucreros, there is a counter with TRAM’s staff that will facilitate you with the proper travel card for your typical journeys and the first travel pass with 10 or 30 trips.
Once you have a travel card, it can be recharged on the machines at Luceros and Mercado or inside the TRAM trains. The card can be also used on the bus network at the same price.
Other gated stations in the TRAM network such as Benidorm or Campello also sell travel cards.
TRAM Zones and Travel Card Differences
Tram travel cards or bonuses can be used only in the TRAM zone they are assigned to. For example, if you bought a travel card in Alicante it can be used only in Tram zone A – Alicante Luceros to Poble Espanyol and other TRAM lines- and Alicante’s busses. If you bought the Mobilis travel card in Benidorm, it can be used only in zone B -from Amerador to Olla Altea in the north.
If you have a travel card bought in Alicante but want to travel to Benidorm you will need to buy a new ticket in the machine for the trip from zone A to zone B.
Alternatively, in the case you travel between Zone A and Zone B often, you can talk to a member of the staff at the counter in the tram-gated stations to assign the travel card to be valid for trips between two zones. This way you can use your travel card to travel from -as an example- Alicante to Benidorm.
Keep in mind, that if you assign two zones to your travel card every trip, even if it is inside one single zone, will be charged at the higher fee of two zones.
Equally, if you want to use your travel card for the special zones T1 or T2 you need a member of the staff to assign your travel bonus trips to be used only in the special zones.
How to use the Travel Cards Mobilis
1. The travel cards must be always tapped in at the start of your journey at either:
- The gate at gatted TRAM stations -that are underground in Alicante and overground in the rest of the network-
- Inside the TRAM train at the rest of the stations
It is important to always tap in as ticket inspectors randomly board the train.
2. The travel card must be only tapped out if you are getting off at a gated station . The automatic gate would check the trip has been previously validated and open the door for the traveller.
Several People Can Use the Same Travel Card
Note that the same travel card can be used by several people on the same journey. Just tap in the same travel card as many times as people are travelling.
In case of need to get off in a gated station just pass the travel card at the gate once per person travelling.
Be Aware of the Trips of your Travel Card Or Recharge Trips
To see the trips available or recharge your Mobilis TRAM bonus you can:
- Ask a member of the staff at any station counter to do it for you
- Use any ticket machine at stations or inside the TRAM trains
- Use Alicante’s TRAM App for Android or for iPhones
- Ask at kiosks in Alicante’s city for Zone A travel cards
Use the Same Travel Cards at Alicante Bus Service
Alicante TRAM travel cards for Zone A are valid for the bus service in Alicante . So, the travel cards bought in a kiosk or the TAM office can be used in the TRAM trains for zone A and vice-versa. The price per single trip and the travel card fees remain the same in both TRAMs and buses.
The official name for the TRAM trains is TRAM d’Alacant or TRAM de Alicante . Likewise, the name of the bus service is MIA, Movilidad Inteligente de Alicante , or Smart Mobility of Alicante.
Transfer between buses is free if done within 60 minutes from the first touch with the travel card. Sadly, transfers do not apply to TRAM services and changing from a TRAM train to a bus will just void another trip in your travel card.
Note that transfers with a single trip ticket are not available either in TRAMs or bus services.
The TRAM Trains
Most of the TRAM line is electric. The trains are modern and quiet. All trains have cooling A/C on in summer and heating in winter.
There are no toilets on the trains or stations, so have this in mind when planning a long trip.
Note the TRAM has buttons inside the trains to ask the driver to stop at the next TRAM stop. This is especially important at slack times as any passenger might have pressed the stop button for the TRAM stop you would like to get off. It behaves in a similar way to what a bus would do.
Travelling With Bicycles, Scooters or Pets
Travelling with bicycles and scooters on the TRAM trains is permitted, even if your bicycle is not a folding bicycle.
If your bicycle is not folding you must stay standing while holding it.
If your bicycle or scooter is folding you must keep it folded and under your seat.
The TRAM services remind customers not to cause any damage to other passengers or the stations and trains with the vehicles.
Sadly, it is not permitted to travel with big pets such as dogs.
The exceptions are small pets in cages, recognised guide dogs and police dogs which are permitted.

RIGHT TO RECTIFICATION AND ERASURE : The interested party has the right to obtain the rectification of inaccurate or incomplete personal data concerning them from FGV, without undue delay. Likewise, the interested party has the right to request the deletion of personal data concerning them. RIGHT OF LIMITATION : The data subject has the right to obtain the limitation of data processing from FGV, in cases of contestation of the accuracy of the data, when the processing is unlawful and the data subject opposes the deletion of the personal data and requests instead the limitation of its use, when the data subject needs to keep the data in order to formulate or exercise claims or while verifying whether the legitimate reasons of the administration prevail over those of the data subject in case the data subject opposes the processing.
RIGHT OF OPPOSITION : The data subject has the right to object to the processing of personal data concerning them. FGV will cease to process these personal data, unless it can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing that override the interests, rights and freedoms of the data subject, or for the formulation, exercise or defence of claims.
RIGHT OF PORTABILITY : The data subject has the right to receive their personal data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable and interoperable format and to transmit it to another data controller, provided that the processing is legitimised on the basis of consent or within the framework of the performance of a contract and the processing is carried out by mechanised means. They also have the right, where technically feasible, to have the data transmitted directly from data controller to data controller. It shall not apply where the processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest in the exercise of public authority vested in the controller.
All of the above rights, including the withdrawal of consent, are of a highly personal nature and can therefore only be exercised by the person concerned. However, they may act through a representative in the cases and under the conditions provided for by the legislation in force.
Exercise of data protection rights of data subjects
The data subject may exercise their rights of access, rectification, deletion, limitation, portability and opposition by submitting a request accompanied by their National Identity Card or equivalent, through FGV's General Entry Register at Partida de Xirivelleta s/n, 46014 - Valencia or Avenida de la Villajoyosa, 2, Estación de la Marina, 03016 – Alicante, A/A Servicio de Protección de Datos Personales or through the Electronic Office of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Here's How You Can Get Around Alicante
Credit: Flickr / Juan Carlos! / CC BY 2.0
A beautiful beach city near Costa Blanca, Alicante has become a major tourist destination in Spain. The city offers a bounty of incredible food and a vibrant nightlife. Getting around the city is easy; there are several modes of transportation to manoeuvre around the city.
Taxis and Buses
Taxis are the most convenient point-to-point mode off transport in the city and surprisingly affordable; a taxi ride for 1km will cost you approximately 1.43 Euros. Many people choose to walk through the main strip which won’t take you more than 2 hours and the weather in Alicante is beautiful almost all year round.
Alicante has an extensive network of 150 buses serving 50 lines and running from 6:40 AM to 11:00 PM. An ordinary ticket will cost you approximately 1.45 Euros but if you purchase a Bonobús transport card which gives you access to the metropolitan public transport (TAM) which includes urban buses, interurban buses, and the tramway all the way to El Campello. If you’re staying in Alicante for long, this card is a good way to save a lot of money because it cuts the cost per trip almost by half. If you take two buses (or a tram and a bus) within one hour, you’ll only have to pay for one trip. For trips out of town to cities like Barcelona and Madrid you can catch a bus at the Muelle de Poniente bus station.

If you want to avoid traffic on the road then catch a tram at one of the three stations in the city: MARQ (located near the Archeology Museum of Alicante), Mercado (near the central market), and Luceros (located below Plaza de Los Luceros). During the summer months, trams run for a longer duration so you can catch one late into the night. Buying tram tickets is a breeze; there are several machines and counters around the stations. A ticket to travel within Alicante (Zone 1) will cost you approximately 1.35 Euros. You can also use the Bono Móbilis Multiviaje card (only within the first zone) or buy a voucher for 10 or 30 trips (also applies to other zones) to save some money.
It’s easy to buy tickets at machines and counters at the station. If you plan to frequently travel via tram, you can buy discount cards at kiosks and tobacconists.
You can always rent a car to get around Alicante.

Back in the days Alicante was just like any other medieval Spanish town a walled city, but because of its strategic location on the Costa Blanca coast it has been fought over a lot. Therefore Alicante has been built, destroyed and rebuilt many times over the last couple hundred years. Some facts to show you the importance of Alicante in history:
- The first long distance train in Spain went from Madrid to Alicante.
- Alicante was the last remaining republican city that Franco took over in times of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
- Napoleon took over Spain except two cities: Cadiz ánd Alicante.
Because of all this fighting over the city there are not many ancient buildings left in Alicante Old Town. Nevertheless it is a beautiful place to stroll through.
Things to know when you travel to Alicante
1. best time to travel to alicante.
Any time of the year is a good time to visit Alicante. Of course if you want to avoid the crowds you don’t travel to Alicante in the summer months June, July and August. But even winter is a great time to visit Alicante. All the photos taken in this Alicante travel blog are from mid December. To me it was the perfect time for my holidays in Alicante, because of the mild temperatures and the deserted streets. As I found Alicante almost deserted at the end of autumn I listed it in a list of off the beaten track destinations in Europe .
2. From Alicante Airport to Alicante city center
May you decide to spend your Alicante weekend break just in the city then you can either take a taxi from the airport to your hotel or the Alicante airport bus. The bus only cost €3,85 per person, taxi’s easily ask €25. The bus from Alicante Airport to Alicante city center leaves just outside the arrivals hall and is called C6. It has several stops along the Explanada de Espana , the main boulevard in the city.
3. How to get around in Alicante
You can either rent a car at the airport and pick it up on arrival or rent a car at the Alicante city center. At the airport you can’t miss the rental car companies in the arrivals hall. It is very simple and straight forward. I recommend you to book a car to see the best places to visit around Alicante.
You can also rent a car in Alicante city center. Almost all the car rental companies have offices next to the train station. I rented my car in the city center at the train station and dropped it off at the airport with no extra fee.
I ended up renting a car from Enterprise , it was less than €20 per day including insurance.
From Alicante to Benidorm
There are busses and trains from Alicante to Benidorm that run every hour and take 1,5 hours only. One of the best places to visit in Alicante is Altea and but public transport will take pretty long.
4. Museums are free
A great thing about a trip to Alicante is that all the museums are free. You can just walk in. More about the best museums to visit in Alicante later. Churches are also admission free.
Alicante itinerary for 3 days
For those people that are only able to enjoy a weekend or 3 days in Alicante I think it is best to rent a car for one day and visit some places near Alicante. I would suggest the following itinerary for Alicante:
Day1: relaxing at the beach and hiking up to the majestic Santa Barbara Castle.
Day 2: Explore the old town by an early morning walking tour then enjoying the marina and one of the many lovely coffee shops or sea food restaurants.
Day 3: Rent a car for a day and see some of the amazing places to visit around Alicante, like the Canelobre Caves, Altea, Villajoyosa.
Then if you leave the next day you can drop the rental car off in the airport before your flight. Doesn't this 3 day itinerary sound like an amazing relaxing city trip or Alicante holiday?
Things to do in Alicante
1. hike up to santa barbara castle.
If you are reasonably fit or have the time anyway, please walk up to the top of the Santa Barbara Castle . To me it is one of the best things to do in Alicante. There are many path to lead to the castle on top of the hill. It is 166 meters above sea level but the views from up there are obviously impressive. During the hike up you will constantly be spoiled with fabulous views in all directions over Alicante city center.
The walk up is pretty steep, but once you reach the top you will appreciate it even more. You can also drive up to the entrance of the Santa Barbara Castle.
There are some places to have a drink along the way with good views over the city center and the ocean.
There are some expositions halls, but I was just mostly interested in the view. There is no Santa Barbara Castle entrance fee. When you visit Alicante make sure to put this on your things to do list!
Watching the sunrise is not possible as there are opening hours. From April till September the castle is open from 10am to 10pm, in the winter months the castle is only open till 8pm.
Watching the sunset from Santa Barbara Castle, a romantic thing to do in Alicante.
2. Stroll through Old Town Alicante
One of my favorite things to do on a city break is to get lost. This time I ended up somewhere in Alicante Old Town and I was blown away by its beauty. Perched in the slopes of the Santa Barbara Castle there are these cute little streets and stairs.
Houses are painted in different colors and all have flowers in front. If you are looking for romantic things to do in Alicante then stroll through Old Town.
3. Sunbath on El Postiguet Beach
This is El Postiguet on a Wednesday in December just before sunset.
There are several amazing beaches around Alicante. I cant tell you which one is the best as I did not try them all. The beach in the city center is called El Postiguet . A little North you can find a huge beach called San Juan Playa. For people staying in Alicante City Center I would recommend going to El Postiguet.
4. Visit the fish market
The local food in Alicante mostly always contains fish. Because of its dry climate there never really were opportunities to grow something so historically dried food and fish has always been part of their menu. In Alicante city center there is Mercado Central , this bustling place is cool to walk around. You will be amazed what they all sell here.
5. Bring your own fish restaurants
Fresher than this it can hardly get. Around the markets there are some restaurants where you can bring your own fish and they cook it for you. Buy it at the market, present it to the restaurant and let them prepare a meal for you with your own fish. Just outside the market there is a restaurant called La Rotonda who also does this. If I were you I would ask in advance before you get there and say: but Traveltomtom told me it was possible… ;)
6. Try Turron
When on an Alicante city break you surely have to try Turron. Originally from the Alicante region it is a kind of nougat sweet made from egg white, honey, sugar and toasted almonds. It comes in many different variations. There are shops dedicated to Turron.
I walked into Turrones ESPI at Calle Tomas Lopez Torregrosa and they let me try different kind of Turrones. Definitely something you have to try when you visit Alicante. They claim to be making Turron since 1820, so I assume they know what they are doing. The liquor of Turron taste a bit like Baileys.
7. Free walking tour Alicante
Did you know that every city you visit has free walking tours? In Alicante you can also find one and I honestly think it is one of the best things to do in the city. Not only do you get to see all the best places to visit, you also get a little slice of history and some cool anecdotes about the city by a local tourguide. The Alicante free walking tour takes about 2 hours and is tip based. They meet every day at 11am at the beginning of Explanada de Espana and you recognize them from of the purple umbrella.
During the free walking tour in Alicante we learned that the rock above Alicante has a face, the one who protects Alicante from Evil. Do you see it?
8. Segway tour
Have you ever tried riding a segway? It is just as easy as walking trust me. An hour city tour cost about €40. You get a little Segway lesson and once you are comfortable you are ready to explore the city on a segway.
9. Snorkel at Tabarca Island
From the beach in Alicante you can see a little rocky island in the ocean. During summer there are many boats going to Tabarca. This inhabited island is a protected marine reserve since 1986. It is a great place for snorkeling
10. Stroll up and down La Rambla
Just like in Barcelona the main street in Alicante is called La Rambla. Stroll up and down and sample food and look for souvenirs in typical stalls from street vendors.
11. Explore the Alicante marina
Marinas are always great to walk around, especially around sunset. It always gives me such a calming feeling to see all these boats perfectly lined up. There is a nice terrace at SOHO Mar to have a drink with views over the marina. You can also find a Volvo Ocean Race Museum , but I did not go inside as well as a casino.
If you fancy a typical Alicante coffee ask for a Bombon Coffee, its a layered coffee with condensed milk. Not my taste, but worth a try.
12. Shopping
If you want a moment for yourself tell your wife to go to the area around Avenida Maisonnave. It is right in the Alicante city center and there are endless shopping opportunities. Make sure she brings her own credit card!
Check out a leather bag store called Cala. It’s really cool if you need some gifts from Alicante, it is worth going. The leather shoes in Spain are cheap and amazing quality compared to most of the world!
Places to see in Alicante
1. explanda de espana.
The main tourist spot in Alicante is its Explanda de Espana . The main boulevard made out of more than 6.5 million marble tiles is something the people from Alicante are really proud of. It has a long history but nowadays tourists on their Alicante weekend break stroll up and down through the massive palm trees before they sit back and relax. There are many terraces and people watching is a popular thing to do in Alicante. The marble tiles of the Explanada have three colors: white and blue are the city colors of Alicante and red. Alicante Red is an official color marble and expensive all over the world, it is marble that comes from this region.
2. Basilica Santa Maria
Nestled in Alicante Old Town next to the Museum of Contemporary Arts you can find the Santa Maria church . The Baroque entry is pretty impressive and still in tact. They renovated the square and the church about 10 years ago and it looks beautiful from the outside. To peak inside you gotta come at the right time.
The basilica is only open from 11.00-12.00 and from 19.00-20.00. During this time there are also church services, but taking photos is allowed. Therefore plan a visit to the Santa Maria Basilica carefully as it is one of the best places to visit in Alicante.
3. Alicante Cathedral
The San Nicolas de Bari Cathedral is located in Alicante city center in front of Plaza del Abad Penalva. The cathedral has a 45 meter high blue cupola that towers out above the city skyline. The interior is pretty impressive too. Inside there is a second floor to get to by a staircase for a different perspective of this amazing cathedral. Definitely among the best places to visit in Alicante.
On the right side of the picture you can see the cathedral. Sad that they allowed one skyscraper to be build in Alicante city center. After this construction they realized it was not a good idea and they did not permit any more of these high rise buildings to be build.
4. Contemporary Art Museum
Located next to the Santa Maria Basilica is the Museum of Contemporary Art . It is free to enter and it was one of the first times I walked into a museum like this. I like the free museums concept!
5. Water Museum
At the bottom of the Santa Barbara Castle you will find the water museum. It basically is a cave in where there is al little exposition about how people back in the days used techniques to save rain water. The entrance is free, it is a 5 minute visit. Not the most exhilarating place to see in Alicante, but nice to peak inside when you pass by.
6. MARQ Archaeological Museum Alicante
The only museum in Alicante where you have to pay an entrance fee. It is only €3 and it is used for preservation and research. It won the European Museum of the year award in 2004, so who would I be to not list it as one of the best things to do in Alicante. It was nice to walk around, surely worth €3. Taking photos without flash is allowed. I loved that the MARQ Archaeological Museum is an interactive museum.
Where to eat in Alicante
When you walk out of the Alicante Cathedral and turn left there is the Calle de Munoz, a lovely little passageway with some of the best restaurants in Alicante. If you are looking where to eat in Alicante I could recommend you one of the restaurants in this little alley.
Anywhere along Explanada is good to eat outside on one of the many terraces. For evenings I liked the Plaza Santa Faz where you find many terraces under big palm trees.
Where to go out in Alicante
From what I found was El Barrio the best place to go out in Alicante. There are a dozen restaurants and bars located in the narrow streets. Havana is a lively place where tourists and locals mingle. Royal Night Club is a popular place to go out late night.
Best coffee places in Alicante
As part of my working holiday visa in Australia I did a barista course and since then a standard coffee is not good enough anymore. Therefore I always roam around to find the best coffee places anywhere I go. In Alicante Old Town I found three amazing places.
1. Madness Coffee Specialty Coffee
Choose your favorite coffee roast from Costa Rica, Rwanda or Colombia. This place knows how to make excellent coffee, thumbs up! A very inviting interior as well, a place where you just want to hang out.
2. Bunatic Slow Coffee
Another little coffee gem in Alicante Old Town. Great coffee and although the interior is a bit minimalistic, this is where you want to come for breakfast. Start your Alicante city break at Bunatic Slow Coffee as their breakfast deals are delicious. You should definitely try the homemade granola with fresh fruits. The toasts are also yummy. Coffees €2,00, breakfast deals €5,00.
3. Sip & Wonder Coffee House
If you are looking for things to do in Alicante when it rains this is a good place to go. Coffee is world class and the homey atmosphere will make you smile. There are sofas, lounge chairs and it is filled with foreign students studying.
Dogs are allowed inside and every time I hang out there I saw a bunch of dogs. The avocado sandwich is delicious. Coffees €2,00, avo on toast €5,00.
Festivals in Alicante
1. carnival.
The number one festival that I would love to go to myself is the Carnival. Im from Southern Holland where we celebrate Carnival big time as well and I have also celebrated Carnival in the Caribean and South America. Street parades, happy people, costumes, smiles, drinks and warm weather and I am 100% sure this is a good festival to attend. Carnival is held mostly around mid February or beginning of March.
2. Running with the bulls
This is exactly what it implies. The brave are able to run with the bulls through the main street. Spectators are behind wooden fences as bulls run through the streets ending up in a temporary bullring at the fishing port. The Running with the Bulls festival is yearly held in July. In 2016 two people died.
3. Start of Volvo Ocean Race
There is a reason why there is a Volvo Ocean Race Museum in the port of Alicante as since 2008 the start of the Volvo Ocean Race is in the Alicante port. It is a big happening every time. The Volvo Ocean Race 2022 - 2023 started again in January 2023 in Alicante.

My trip to Alicante
As you have been able to read I have explored the city quite extensively. This lead to the above information about holidays to Alicante. The vibe in the city is super chilled especially in the winter season. People are more relaxed and it is not at all crowded. Flights to Alicante are cheaper and hotels too.
You can already find Alicante hotels for as less as €50 per night. Every morning I made my way to one of the coffee shops mentioned to get a good cup of coffee and a healthy breakfast.
Then walked around the city taking photos and sampling some Jamon Iberico and of course some ice cream. Life in Alicante was good… I will definitely be back!

Enjoy your trip to Alicante!
Of all Spain's mainland provincial capitals, Alicante (Valenciano: Alacant) is the most influenced by tourism, thanks to the nearby airport and resorts. Nevertheless it is a dynamic, attractive Spanish city with a castle, old quarter and long waterfront. The eating scene is exciting and the nightlife is absolutely legendary, whether you're chugging pints with the stag parties at 7pm or twirling on the dance floor with the locals seven hours later. On a weekend night it's impossibly busy and buzzy year-round.

In the minds of many, Alicante ( ALACANT ) is often lumped together with the other brash Costa Blanca resorts. It shouldn’t be. Valencia’s second-largest city, the thoroughly Spanish Alicante has a decidedly elegant Mediterranean air. Seafront paseos and wide, breezy esplanades, such as the Rambla Méndez Núñez, are peppered with cosy bars and terrace cafés; a series of well-curated museums feature everything from ancient archeology to contemporary art; the city’s cuisine scene is making a name for itself, just as its healthy nightlife did long ago; and its long, sandy beaches are sunkissed for much of the year.
Founded by the Romans, who named it Lucentum (City of Light), and dominated by the Arabs in the second half of the eighth century, Alicante was finally reconquered by Alfonso X in 1246 for the Castilian Crown. In 1308, Jaime III incorporated Alicante into the kingdom of Valencia.
Today, the main fiesta , Las Hogueras, is at the end of June, and ignites a series of cracking celebrations second only to Las Fallas in Valencia.

Why Go To Alicante
About 100 miles south of Valencia and along the Costa Blanca (White Coast) is Alicante, an easygoing Spanish city that's highly favored among the party set. You'll most likely find travelers congregating around the Explanada de España , donning resort wear with drink in hand and bobbing to the beat of house music. During the day, the beaches – especially San Juan Beach – are the main event. One of Spain's best shorelines, San Juan Beach is replete with soft sands, about 330 days of sunshine a year and warm waters. While the city does have cultural attractions like the acclaimed Archaeological Museum of Alicante , the main reason to visit Alicante is to relax and make merry. So, imagine the sun on your skin, sand between your toes, grilled fish on your plate, sangria in your hand, lively music in your ears and a medieval castle, Renaissance cathedral or modern fountain before your eyes… Alicante.

Alicante Travel Tips
Best months to visit.
The best time to visit Alicante is any time. With mild temperatures and an average of about 20 days of rain per year, Alicante is hospitable year-round. For the best beach weather, visit June through September. (Be warned, the sand will be the most crowded at this time, too.) But if you want a chilled-out vacation, visit in the winter; you'll enjoy temperatures in the 50s, as well as deals on hotel rates.
Weather in Alicante
Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center
What You Need to Know
- More than Spanish Because it's such a desirable location with sunny weather, Alicante is popular among many European tourists. Don't be surprised to hear many languages other than Spanish as well as different Spanish dialects.
- Late is on time Consistent with the rest of Spain, people in Alicante eat late and party even later. Prepare to eat dinner around 10 p.m. and expect the lively bars to play music into the wee morning hours.
- Freebies Whether you're an avid museumgoer or you just want to take a quick peek inside a museum, you'll be happy to find most Alicante museums – such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Fogueres Festival Museum – offer free entry.
How to Save Money in Alicante
- Visit in the winter As with many other Spanish cities, Alicante is relatively inexpensive, but prices increase during peak beach season. To avoid surge pricing at hotels and rentals, travel to Alicante in the offseason (between October and March).
- Fly into Madrid Because it's sometimes expensive to fly directly to Alicante, many travelers opt to fly to Madrid and rent a car for the four-hour drive southeast. Not only will you enjoy a scenic road trip, you'll have a car to make traveling around Alicante easier.
- Menú del día If you want to save on dining costs, choose the menú del día for lunch. This deal will get you an appetizer, entree and dessert for 10 to 15 euros (about $11 to $17).
Culture & Customs
Alicante is a seaside city, and in turn, its culture centers on enjoying the outdoors and experiencing life at a leisurely pace. Locals and visitors alike spend a great deal of time outside, whether they're walking, biking, roller blading or just enjoying a glass of sangria at an alfresco restaurant. Surfing is a popular sport in the city, so you can expect to see many people riding the waves while you relax on the beach. Or, you can sign up for a lesson at one of the many surf schools if you want to experience it yourself. Alicante doubles as the name of the city and the name of the small eastern province it sits within. There are many other small beach towns within the Alicante province you can visit during your trip.
In Alicante, euros are the accepted currency, and Spanish is the most widely spoken language. The euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, so plan to check it before your trip. Because Alicante is popular among tourists – especially those from other European countries – you'll find yourself surrounded by a mélange of different ethnicities and languages, but there is still a strong local and authentic Spanish presence. You'll find a true taste of Spain when you venture away from the crowded Rambla Méndez Núñez and look for little restaurants in the narrow streets. You can get your dose of Spanish history at the city's many museums like the Archaeological Museum of Alicante or the Bullfighting Museum where you'll learn the history behind the infamous Spanish tradition. Some tourists use Alicante as a home base from which to travel to other towns along the Costa Blanca.
Days start late in Alicante. Most people socialize while sipping coffee around noon, eat their midday meal around 3 p.m. and don't sit for dinner until around 9 p.m. The siesta culture is a way of life in Alicante, so you may find many stores and businesses closed between 2 and 4 p.m. While you don't have to necessarily take a nap during this time, it's nice to relax and rest up for your night on the town.
xAs mentioned, Alicante is known for its nightlife, so you can expect lively crowds out and about once the sun goes down. The city offers diverse nightlife options from bars to clubs to massive discotecas. La Zona district and El Puerto district situated near the marina have some of the most popular bars and nightclubs; if you want to tuck in early, consider staying in a quieter area like El Campello, which is a tram ride away from downtown Alicante city. The nightlife attracts a young crowd, so expect to see many teens and young adults out and about during your stay.
What to Eat
When you think Spanish food, you probably think of one thing: paella. The flavorful rice and seafood dish originated in the Valencian Community near Alicante, making this seaside city the perfect place to sample it. Travelers recommend trying paella at the Michelin-starred Monastrell , the elegant La Taberna Ibérica or the casual, but authentic La Tasca del Barrio . There are also plenty of other seafood dishes to choose from thanks to Alicante's location alongside the Mediterranean Sea. Salazones, or salted fish dishes, are popular as well as esgarraet (made with cod and red peppers) and all i pebre (a stew of baby eel, garlic and paprika). If you're not a seafood fan, don't fret: other equally delicious Alicante dishes include hearty meat stew called olla churra and anything featuring the signature alcachofas – artichokes – for which the Alicante region is known. For dessert, tuck into some turrón – a hard nougat snack famous in Alicante and influenced by the region's Arabic history.
Of course, it's hard to pass up a glass of deep red wine on your Spanish getaway. For all the oenophiles venturing to Alicante, there is a famous wine route that stretches from the Vinalopó region just north of the city to La Marina in the south. There are plenty of organized tours that leave from Alicante and take you to various vineyards around the area. If you'd rather stay local, you can sip some vino at one of the many wine bars around the city, such as Vino y Mas , Syrah , El Colmado and Boca de Vin .
Getting Around Alicante
The best way to get around Alicante is on foot. It's not a massive or very hilly city, so walking is an easy feat. Not to mention, much of the city's charm comes from colorful buildings and secret nooks you would miss if you were driving. However, do note that many streets are cobblestone, so if you have mobility issues it may be hard to maneuver. If you don't want to or are unable to walk, you have other transportation options.
The Alicante Airport (ALC) sits less than 10 miles south of the center of Alicante. If you're taking a cab from the airport into central Alicante, expect to pay a fixed rate of 19 to 21 euros (about $22 to $24), depending on the time of day. Radio Taxi Elche, easily identified by the green stripes on the cars, are the official taxi at the airport. If you'd rather take public transportation, you can hop on the C6 bus line, which will take you into downtown Alicante for 3.85 euros (or about $4.50).

Entry requirements
This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.
The authorities in Spain set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Spanish Embassy in the UK .
COVID-19 rules
There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.
Passport validity requirements
Spain follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:
- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.
You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.
Visa requirements
You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Spain, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:
- as a tourist
- to visit family or friends
- to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
- for short-term studies or training
The requirements for working in Spain are different.
If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.
If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).
Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.
If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.
If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.
British nationals living in Spain do not need their passports to be stamped. Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control.
At Spanish border control, you may need to show:
- a return or onward ticket
- proof of your travel insurance
- you have enough money for your stay - the amount varies depending on your accommodation
- a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property
- an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts
Using the e-gates
Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you’re aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates when they are working.

These New Government-approved Locations Around the U.S. Will Speed Up Your Passport Process
The “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” will be taking place from New Jersey to Florida this month.
Mehroz Kapadia/Travel + Leisure
The U.S. Government is taking a summer road trip to make it easier for first-time passport holders to complete applications.
Continuing the State Department's “Special Passport Acceptance Fairs” — which was created to speed up passport processing times of passports for first timers — the agency has just released a new batch of dates through July 6. The events will be held in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Carolina. The events are often held at post offices, recreation centers, or libraries.
The events are only for new passports, and not renewals. “We're holding special passport fairs all across the United States to help you get your passport more easily,” the State Department shared on their site. Here’s the full list of upcoming Special Passport Acceptance Fairs, times and location details available on the Fair website : June 5 - Somerville, NJ - Somerville Branch Library June 6 - Manchester, NJ - Leisure Village West Association - Willow Hall June 7 - Nutley, NJ - Nutley Parks and Recreation Center June 8 - Exeter, CA - Exeter Post Office June 8 - Tell City, IN - Tell City Post Office June 8 - Fairfield, NJ - Fairfield Recreation Center June 8 - Greenville, SC - Greenville Main Post Office June 11 - Verona, NJ - Verona Town Hall June 12 - Bridgewater, NJ - Bridgewater Branch Library June 12 - Toms River, NJ - Lake Ridge June 12 - Mahwah, NJ - Senior Center June 13 - Clermont, FL - Highlander Building June 13 - Kissimmee, FL - Valencia College Poinciana Campus June 13 - Lakeland, FL - Keiser University June 13 - Orlando, FL - University of Central Florida - Live Oak Event Center June 13 - Orlando, FL - Leonard & Marjorie Williams Family YMCA June 13 - Sanford, FL - Sanford Civic Center June 13 - Garfield, NJ - City Hall June 14 - Kissimmee, FL - Holiday Inn Orlando SW Celebration June 15 - Carrboro, NC - Carrboro Post Office June 15 - Okeechobee, FL - Okeechobee County Clerk of the Circuit Court June 15 - Las Cruces, NM - Las Cruces Main Post Office June 15 - Montpelier, VT - Vermont Secretary of State Office June 17 - Brick, NJ - Greenbriar One June 18 - Bergenfield, NJ - Conlon Hall June 18 - Verona, NJ - Verona Town Hall June 22 - Oroville, CA - Butte County Elections Office June 22 - Livingston, NJ - Livingston Public Library June 22 - Milford, NH - Wadleigh Memorial Library June 22 - Scottsdale, AZ - Scottsdale Office June 26 - Bridgewater, NJ - Bridgewater Branch Library June 27 - Fairlawn, NJ - Council Chambers, 2nd Floor July 6 - Pensacola, FL - Nobles Station Post Office
For people seeking a new passport that don’t live near one of the special events, they can still submit an application through the existing process . The current processing times for passports are 6 to 8 weeks for routine service, 2 to 3 weeks for expedited service, and urgent service is available by appointment for people with travel within 14 calendar days, according to the State Department .
The State Department recently shared a notice of the top mistakes that people make when completing a passport application, including failure to follow the passport photo requirements and not completing all of the form sections.

What Is The Air Canada Home Away from Home Flight Pass?
- Air Canada offers a Home Away from Home Flight Pass for two or more people on select international routes.
- The pass works with credits, min 4 and max 12, priced by region, available only in economy class.
- Pass routes include South Korea, France, UK, North Africa, Brazil, Colombia, and China.
There are several ways that frequent travelers can save money on regular flights. Many airlines offer discounts or negotiate special rates or contracts. Multiple-sector or “round the world” tickets make sense for some travelers. And passes or some form of prepaying are another common offering from airlines.
Air Canada has several such flight pass options – including an innovative “Home Away from Home” pass for frequent travelers on select international routes. This targets the leisure or VFR market. There are several limitations and restrictions, but it can still make sense for some.
Home Away from Home Flight Pass
The Home Away from Home Flight Pass is a product offered by Air Canada that gives (potential) lower fares for two or more people traveling together on certain international routes. It works using a system of credits. You purchase a number of credits for the region or route you are traveling. Each credit gives a one-way flight for one person.
The minimum purchase is four credits – this would give two people two return flights. The maximum purchase for one pass is twelve credits. This could be used for two people for six flights, or other combinations up to six people for two flights.
Get all the latest aviation news for North America here.
The pass is priced by region of Canada (east or west) and destination, number of credits, and for standard or flex tickets (flex books into a higher inventory/booking class and will have better availability). It is only available in economy class.
The regions/airports available are:
- France: Bordeaux–Mérignac (BOD), Lyon (LYS), Marseille (MRS), Nice (NCE), Paris (CDG), Toulouse (TLS),
- United Kingdom: Dublin (DUB), Birmingham (BHX), Edinburgh (EDI), Glasgow (GLA), Manchester (MAN), London Heathrow (LHR)
- North Africa: Casablanca (CMN), Algiers (ALG)
- Brazil: São Paulo (GRU)
- Colombia: Bogotá (BOG)
- South Korea: Seoul (ICN)
- China: Hong Kong
So far, Air Canada has offered the pass as a seasonal offer. In 2024, it was launched in early March and must be purchased by 12th April. The last sale period was in October and November 2023. Flights credits are valid for 12 months from purchase.
The pass routes and prices
For the March and April 2024 offer, the full pricing and routes are as follows:
Standard Pass prices (in Canadian Dollars):
Flex Pass prices (in Canadian Dollars). These rates are significantly higher but will offer much better availability. This is particularly important for those that need flexibility or want to make last-minute changes (but availability is still not guaranteed).
Home Away from Home Flight Pass rules and restrictions
As you would expect, there are many important terms and conditions with a travel pass such as this. Some of the most important (particularly those which affect its value) are listed below. For more details, see the Air Canada website.
- The pass is available for two to 4 people traveling together and is not available for solo travelers. This makes it more of a leisure or VFR-targeted offer.
- You must be an Air Canada Aeroplan member to purchase a pass.
- Credits expire 12 months after the purchase date. They can be extended once for three months for a fee.
- Flights must be flown on Air Canada, Air Canada Express, or Air Canada Rouge.
- Connecting flights (within Canada) are permitted at no extra cost.
- The flight pass price includes all taxes and charges.
- Seat reservations are included.
- Bookings can be changed or canceled free of charge.

Does the Home Away from Home Flight Pass make sense?
To even make the pass an option, users would need to be flying the same route (or region) at least twice in one year, with two or more people together.
It is then a case of how the pricing and restrictions look based on your circumstances. Generally, you will pay less for flights booked this way (although there could be exceptions if you are always able to travel on the absolute lowest fare or purchase during sales).
It works best for travelers who have some flexibility and plan ahead. You will, of course, be losing out if you can’t use the credits due to lack of availability. This is mitigated either by booking in advance (remember you can change dates free later), having flexibility in exactly when you travel, and by needing to travel more times per year.
While the destination list may seem limited, remember that many of these destinations served by Air Canada are regional hubs. Other tickets can, of course, be used to continue travel. Also, bear in mind that regional connections within Canada are included, so those traveling from locations other than the main hubs could benefit here.
Other passes from Air Canada
The Home Away from Home Flight Pass is clearly very restricted, appealing only to those who fly regularly on certain international routes. Air Canada offers a number of other travel passes. These include:
- The Weekend Pass. This offers flight credits for two or more people traveling together between select cities in Canada and the United States on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
- The Student Pass. Available for a wide range of regional and international routes for students to travel to/from home locations regularly. This is available for solo travelers.
- Flight Pass for Business Travel. These are high-volume passes (with 30 to 200 credits) for regional or international routes that can be shared between multiple employees.
