Frequently asked questions

Your search for ""

When is the best time to book a last minute travel deal?

Depends if you’re skiing, sunning or both. We have over 300 trips, heading off to 6+ continents with start dates throughout the year. Want our advice? Do your research. Find out when Paris is quietest, or when the Masai Mara lions are most active. Then, when you have a place and a season in mind, check our site regularly for red hot last-minute travel deals. Don’t miss our Cyber Sale in late November / early December, and of course our January sale too.

How do I get the best last minute travel deal?

Look, we can vouch for all of our trips (obvs) but there’s a lot of them, all catering for different folks and their strokes. Browse our site to find the trip(s) that suit you best. Maybe make a lil list, and then check regularly for red hot last-dash deals. Don’t miss our Cyber Sale in late November / early December, and of course our January sale too.

Are flights included?

Sadly, flights to/from your start point aren’t included with the cost of your Contiki trip, and you will have to make your own way there and back. This is because travellers join us from all over the world.

Your Contiki trip DOES include accommodation, in-country transport and an expert Trip Manager to be your friend, guide and walking encyclopaedia every step of the way. Most trips include breakfasts, plus some other meals and lots of included experiences – although this varies from trip to trip.

Sometimes you just need to getaway. If your wanderlust gets the best of you and the traveler inside is itching to hit the road, there are plenty of websites and apps out there to help—fast. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or a full-blown vacation, these sites can help you find great last minute travel deals.

Best Websites for Last Minute Flights

Finding flights can be a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be! There are loads of ways to find cheap flights from your favorite airline, even if you are going away in the near future.

1. Google Flights

Open laptop showing flight search homescreen for Google Flights

One fun way to find last minute flights is to plug your departure city and travel dates into Google Flights , leaving your destination blank. The resulting map shows you the lowest available prices to cities all over the world, letting you find deals in places you might not have ever thought to go.

Open laptop showing homepage of Kayak last minute deals search, a place where you can book last minute travel

Kayak’s Explore feature is a similar tool. You can enter exact travel dates or a certain month, then see which fares are available from your home gateway.

3. Secret Flying

An open laptop showing the homepage of Secret Flying, one of several listed flight booking websites

You can get alerts when fares go down when you sign up at Secret Flying , or, use their search tool to find great last minute deals on flights. Simply input your departure city, keep the arrival as “anywhere” and put the current month as the time you are looking to fly. Perfect for when you just want to get away, but you don’t care where to. Secret Flying also finds “mistake” fares, so be sure to sign up to get notifications so you can book them before they are gone!

The 12 Best Flight Search Sites for Booking Cheap Airfare

Where to Find Last Minute Hotel Deals

You’d think that every hotel would have cheap rooms last minute, but that isn’t always the case. These sites will help you find a room that won’t break the bank with a spur of the moment trip!

1. Hotel Tonight

An open laptop showing the homepage of HotelTonight, a travel website where you can make last minute hotel reservations

A perennial favorite app among SmarterTravel editors, HotelTonight has been finding travelers’ deep hotel discounts since 2010. The app allows travelers to book same-day accommodations across the globe at discounts of up to 50 percent. If you don’t want to leave things until the literal last minute, though, the app also lets you book dates a little further out. The well-designed booking engine serves up clever recommendations and insider info—plus those remarkable markdowns. Keep an eye out for the Daily Drop, the biggest discount of the day (which you only have 15 minutes to book).

An open laptop showing the homepage of Groupon, a site where you can make last minute bookings

The site is known for discounted restaurant meals, fitness classes, and beauty services also has a last minute deals section that typically includes discounted hotel and resort stays. On the day I checked, options ranged from a $69 hotel near Niagara Falls to a four-star Times Square hotel for $77 a night.

3. Trip.com

Open laptop showing homepage of Trip.com, a place where you can book last minute travel

Trip.com is your basic hotel booking site, and is great for finding a last minute deal. While they feature hotels all around the world, it’s particularly great for deals on hotels in Asia, so when you grab an amazing last minute flight to somewhere in Asia, head to trip.com to book your hotel!

4. Last Minute Travel

An open laptop showing the homepage of Last Minute Travel, a last minute travel booking site

As its name suggests, Last Minute Travel is dedicated solely to last minute travel deals. This wide-ranging site offers bargains on hotels, car rentals, cruises, transfers, and activities. Their hotel deals are amazing.  In a sample search, I found top-rated hotels in Paris from just $54 per night for a trip about two weeks out. The site has a Last Minute Travel Club for deeper discounts and rewards points to use toward free hotel stays. Membership is $50 per year.

The 15 Best Hotel Booking Sites

Amazing Last Minute Vacation Packages

Sometimes, booking a vacation package is the cheapest way to go for last minute travel. These sites are the best for one-stop shopping.

1. Airfarewatchdog

An open laptop showing the homepage of Airfarewatchdog Weekendr, a travel booking site

2. CheapCaribbean.com

Open laptop showing homepage of Cheap Caribbean, a place where you can book last minute travel

If you have a specific destination in mind, your best bet is often to focus on a website that deals with one region specifically. CheapCaribbean.com has last minute deals , many of them short-lived flash sales. Though you can’t hem and haw about whether or not to go, you’ll often have plenty of time to plan. For example, a four-night air/hotel package to the Dominican Republic might start at $509 per person for travel four to six months from now—but it must be booked in the next four days.

3. FunJet Vacations

Open laptop showing homepage of Funjet Vacations, a place where you can book last minute travel

Their sales are great if you are open to where you want to go, and often have dates for travel within the month.

1. Sandals Resorts

Club Med has locations all over the world, including Mexico, Canada and all over the Caribbean – perfect for a cheap getaway.

3. Travelzoo

An open laptop showing a search page of TravelZoo, a site where you have the option to make a last minute booking

This venerable travel site offers last minute deals on just about everything, but their all-inclusive search is one of the best as far as the bigger sites go. When I searched, I found a package for an all-inclusive stay in Cabo, including airfare, for $739, for travel next week.

How to Find Great Deals on Last Minute Tours

If you prefer having an itinerary made for you, and, let’s face it, if you are taking a last minute trip, it might be nice to not have to plan the entire trip, there are some great sites to book a last minute tour on.

1. TourRadar

An open laptop showing the homepage of TourRadar, a site with the option to book late travel

Book a tour of your destination as well as accommodations through TourRadar . There are several ways to search, including destination, adventure styles (food & culinary, active adventure, health & wellness, etc.), and date. Search for tours for travel in the next two weeks, or multiple months in advance.

2. G Adventures

Open laptop showing homepage of G Adventures, a place where you can book last minute group travel

From Iceland to Turkey, G Adventures has tours to inspire and excite. They have available dates for travel throughout the year, but most are available to book for tours within a week or two. They have themed tours like the Northern Lights in Iceland, and Hiking the Azores—whatever, wherever you want to go. I found a four-day hiking tour of the Inca Trail in Peru for $881 departing within the week.

3. Contiki

An open laptop showing the last minute deals page of tour and travel booking site Contiki

Contiki has a wide variety of tours to choose from, and the site has a handy last minute trips option to find a tour when you need one. When I searched, there was an Egypt and the Nile tour for $1,772, starting in just four days from when I searched! Most tours include accommodation, meals, transportation, admission to sites, and tour guides.

Popular Getaway Deal Destinations

You may think it is hard to find deals to some of the top destinations, but as we have been mentioning, there are several options out there, no matter where you are going. Here are some sites that will help you plan your next getaway to some of the top spots.

Europe Deals

Lastminute.com .

Open laptop showing homepage of LastMinute.com, a place where you can book last minute travel

Netherlands-based LastMinute.com also covers a range of last minute trip options, including flights, hotels, Eurostar train tickets, vacation packages, car rentals, theater tickets, and experiences. A Paris search turned up several highly-rated hotel options at $75-$85 per night at press time. This site also allows you to filter by hotels that offer free cancellation, a great perk if your travel plans change last minute. LastMinute.com also has “top-secret hotels” available for opaque booking, though in my Paris search they were actually a bit more expensive than the named hotels in my results.

Caribbean Vacations

An open laptop showing the last minute deals page of Beaches

While we love Sandals, we also love their sister company, Beaches . Beaches features two resorts in Jamaica and one in Turks and Caicos. Their last minute travel deals are similar to Sandals, where you can get one free night, and are able to book with just a couple of days in advance.

Trips to New York

An open laptop showing the homepage of TKTS, a place to book last minute tickets

Chances are, if you are heading to NYC, you are going to want to see a Broadway show. Your best option for great last minute seats is TKTS . Download the app for your phone to see that days discounted tickets, and you can decide whether it is worth making the trek to the booth. Beats running out early in the morning to wait in line, and you are sure to get some deeply discounted tickets.

The Hotel Room Workout Anyone Can Do

Best Last Minute Travel Apps for Your Phone

Most people tend to do everything on their phones, from booking restaurants, reading the news, and of course, booking travel. These apps are our favorites for booking last minute travel.

A man holding a phone showing the app Elude

Elude is more than an app, it is an experience for the well-seasoned traveler. Not only does it let you search trips from your departure city to anywhere in the world, it gets to know you so you’ll find out about the best deals catered to your interests. Keep tabs on your trips, where you’ve been and what you’ve done. Their search feature allows you to put what your budget is, and what dates you want to travel, then showing you details for trips that fall under your criteria. When I searched, I found a trip to Prague leaving from New York City in two weeks for $1374 including airfare and hotel.

A man holding a phone showing the booking app Snaptravel

With Snaptravel , you can search for hotels conveniently on your phone. Once you sign up, you will receive exclusive deals over your message service of choice (SMS, Facebook Messenger, iMessage etc..). You can also do a simple search with the days you want to go, and where you want to go. You can filter by price, hotel stars, amenities and more. The perfect app for booking that last minute hotel anywhere in the world.

Heading to the Airport? Use This Preflight Checklist

A man holding a phone showing the vacation rental bookingapp VRBO

These days, vacation rentals are all the rage, and finding a last minute travel deal for accommodations can be tricky if you don’t want to break the bank. That’s where apps like VRBO come in. You can search rooms, apartments and houses available to rent wherever you are going. Often, owners who have had a cancellation or just want the place booked will discount the price last minute as to not totally lose out on making any money. You might just find a unique stay, like a treehouse or secluded cabin.

Travelocity

A person holding a phone showing the travel app Travelocity

Everything is better with time, and Travelocity is not excluded. Founded in 1996, they have adapted to the ever-changing tech world, and their app shows they are good at what they do. Search for hotels, vacation packages, flights—you name it—and all of your bookings will stay on the app for easy access. Looking for the perfect trip to Las Vegas last minute? Travelocity has your back.  When I searched for a trip to Vegas in two weeks, I found hotel and airfare for under $1,000 for a five night stay.

Our tour includes Red Square, the heart of Russia, and a chance to see the ancient residences of Russian rulers, now used for presidential and state occasions. You can make a wish to return at ‘Kilometer Zero’, see the beautiful stations on the Moscow Metro, and get many useful tips from your  Moscow tour guide  to help you navigate the city on your own.

Moscow in One Day

At the Biggest Cannon in the World

Many of my Dear clients come to visit Moscow just for one day. The most popular reason for it is that they are actually traveling elsewhere, and Moscow is just a transitional point, but they do not want to miss the opportunity to explore this famous city, even if very quickly. Specifically for cases like this I came up with a quick itinerary for Moscow one day tour that can be completed in several hours, yet includes pretty much all the landmarks that you can see in any top 10 of must-see tourist attractions.

In fact, most of them are located so closely that you won’t even need a car, we can just walk from one stop to another - it’s not really that challenging. However, if you don’t feel like it, then we can surely use a car.

1. Red Square

First place we should start Moscow city tour with is probably the most famous one – the Red Square, the heart of the city, from which you can actually see the next few destinations, but let’s talk about the square itself.

Bird's Flight Over the Red Square

It has a very rich history that dates back to the days of Ivan the Terrible, a well-known Russian tsar (well known for how terrible he was) who lived in early XVI century. The square was originally a marketplace; a very big marketplace, medieval analogue of today’s biggest trade centers, and there was still enough room to use it as a place for all kinds of royal ceremonies. Even by today’s standards it a very wide area paved with reddish stone, but it’s not why it’s called red. There’s nothing strange about it, because it wasn’t, in fact, that red back then, as it was paved a few times. The name comes from archaic Russian word that means “red” and “beautiful” at the same time (Russian people clearly have a soft spot for color red), so it is the “beautiful square” for that matter, but it’s probably too late to change it now. Also, nowadays that word actually does only mean “red” in Russian, so even some Russian people (uneducated ones, I would guess) think that it’s red because it looks red.  Anyway, walking around it will take us about half an hour, after which can go straight to…

2. GUM Mall

“GUM” is, in a way, a continuation of medieval practice to use the Red Square as a trading place, because “GUM” is an enormous mall (“GUM” is short for “main universal store” in Russian, and should be pronounced “goom”).

Autumn Season in GUM Mall

Building it was the idea of Queen Catherine II herself (XVIII century), but, well, not all your plans go smoothly even when you’re a monarch, so they never finished it during her lifetime. But the idea never died, so it was built, burned down (by accident), reconstructed, almost demolished (on purpose), and reconstructed again so many times that you could write a book about it, which is why I won’t be laying heavy on the details in this article. Enough to say that GUM the way we know it today was reconstructed the last time in 1950’s. As you can guess, architecturally it is quite distinctive from other malls anywhere in the world, because all the architects had always been faithful to historical origins, and never tried to make it look “more modern”.

The Main Entrance to GUM Building in Summer. Angle View

Even looking at it from the outside is quite an exciting experience (which is a part of walking around the Red Square), but it is just as magnificent on the inside. Frankly, there’s nothing really that special about what you can actually buy there (this is where GUM is pretty much like any other huge mall), but in terms of architecture and design, it’s quite amazing what they did there. Exploring GUM takes approximately 15 minutes, and our next place to go, If you don’t mind, will be…

3. Lenin’s Tomb (Mausoleum)

Guess where it is. Precisely, on the Red Square! It’s a place called Lenin’s Mausoleum.

Lenin's Mausoleum in Red Square at Night

If you do not know who Lenin is, then, first of all, shame on you, and second of all, he was the leader of The Great October Social Revolution of 1917. The title of this revolution is quite self-descriptive: In 1917 Lenin, his comrades Bolsheviks, and (this is an important part) half a million people peacefully picketing in Petrograd (Russia’s capital city ‘til 1918) had overthrown the monarchy and established social state. So he’s quite memorable. This is why when he died in 1924, his body was preserved and put in Mausoleum, which was built specifically for that purpose, for people to be able to see Lenin’s body that is lying in a glass sarcophagus. It takes about 1 hour (there is usually a long line of people). Stalin, for that matter, was also embalmed and put in Mausoleum (also after he died), but later, when Khrushchev, who was much milder than Stalin, came to power (given that being milder than Stalin is like being softer than diamonds), Russians felt like they had enough of praising Stalin, so his body was removed. Not too far though, it was cremated and put into the Kremlin Wall. That brings us to the next destination, which is…

4. Kremlin’s Grounds and Cathedrals

First of all, let’s clarify what Kremlin actually is, especially given that Kremlin is a lot of things. Originally, Kremlin is a defensive architectural assemble that consists of tall and long walls and lots of towers that are even taller.

The Key Map of Moscow Kremlin

The word “kremlin” was actually used to describe central fortified complexes in many historic Russian cities, so the one we’re talking about should technically be called “the Moscow Kremlin”, but it’s a default meaning of “kremlin” now, unless you actually specify that you imply Novgorod Kremlin, Kazan Kremlin, etc. Built in XV century, it takes 27.7 hectares (0.277 km 2 ) and is located… bingo, right next to the Red Square.

Tsar Cannon

The area includes five palaces, four cathedrals, the enclosing Kremlin Wall (the one that contains Stalin’s ashes, as well as other famous people’s ashes), and that’s not even a half of what there is to see in Kremlin, so don’t be surprised that this part of the tour takes the most time, around 1.5 hours (I’m good with timing, so don’t worry). There are also two gardens, Russian Diamond Fund, the Tsar Bell (a really big bell) and the Tsar Cannon (you guessed it, a huge cannon)… see, I’m not even describing these things, just listing them makes this article longer than I expected it to be (which, as I said, never happens in terms of guiding the tour, I never lose track of time so don’t worry about it ), and, to be fair, it’s beyond me to describe all that grandeur anyway, so just come and see it yourself. And when you’re done seeing, we can go and...

5. Have a Lunch

If you are an experienced traveler, you should not be surprised that am giving this delightful activity it’s special place in this list. Not only will you probably be glad to eat something after walking around for 3 hours, but trying another country’s kitchen is a very significant part of the experience.

Portrait in Ukrainian Restaurant Taras Bulba

Also, if you are here for 3-4 hours, then we really won’t have much time left anyway, and you’ve got to try some Russian food. If you can stay here a bit longer, 8-10 hours maybe, then it’s just a nice break from physical activities without breaking the exploration. If you want to know my opinion, the absolute best place to go is Café Pushkin – traditional Russian kitchen cooked by the best chefs, who keep the balance between being faithful to original recipes and creativity (tasty, tasty creativity). Café’s design is wonderful, it has the atmosphere of XIX century and service is top notch. However, if you don’t like fancy restaurants we can always go to a local café or a Ukrainian restaurant that will have food that is just as tasty, without the excessive luxury. There you can try famous Ukrainian and Russian foods including borsch, pelmeni, vareniki, etc. After we had a good meal, and are ready for new exciting adventures, let’s go and see what is…

6. The Ceremony of Changing Guards (at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier)

The Kremlin Step

The Tomb of Unknown Soldier is a memorial dedicated to basically all the fallen soldiers in WWII, but the reason it is called that is because, sadly, not all bodies could be identified, and all these guys, clearly, also deserved a monument. Ceremony of changing guards, however, was not always the part of what was going on. Originally, it was always taking place at the Mausoleum, but only until 1993, and only four years later relocated to where it happens now. Russians call it “The Number One Sentry.” The ceremony itself never served a practical purpose though (other than to literally change the guards). It’s not that they just change, it the way they do it. This ceremony lasts about 2-3 minutes every hour from 8 am to 8 pm, regardless of weather conditions. Some people enjoy the level of guards’ discipline and military choreography (if this word is appropriate), and some, to be fair, like it simply for how hilarious they think it looks, but in any case it is worth witnessing, and it takes only 15 minutes. Also, during the warm months (from the end of April to the end of October) on Saturdays, we can go see the change of the guards of the Presidential Regiment, which will last for 25-30 minutes. This is a very impressive sight, more impressive than the similar event in Buckingham Palace (as many of my clients have said, who witnessed both of these ceremonies). And after that we can go and explore…

7. Moscow Metro (Metropolitan)

If you’ve never heard of it, throw away any expectations and prejudice.

Kievskaya-Ring Station - 300 Years of Russian-Ukrainian Heritage

Moscow’s subway isn’t like any other. The design and size of the stations are breathtaking: they are basically underground palaces, each being outstandingly beautiful and unique. Incrustations, sculptures, mosaics, carvings, lights… truly a must-see. It is almost just as epic as the Kremlin itself, which is why it takes almost just as much time to explore it properly – 1.5 hours.  After doing the Moscow Metro tour , we can go up again and see… No doubt, that it is one of the most popular Moscow tours.

8. Novodevichy Convent

Smolensky Church and Prohorov Chapel Framed by Trees in Snow

Delightful and peaceful place… near Kremlin. It was built in 1524 and was commonly visited by the royal family. Actually, it was somewhat a part of the Kremlin, because it also had a defensive purpose. It has a rich history, like when Napoleon tried to blow it up in 1812, or when Soviets were turning it to all kinds of things from Museum Of Women Emancipation to Moscow Theological Institute. Area of the monastery is absolutely lovely: gardens, ponds, pathways, and great view on the city. The tour of Novodevichy convent and  cemetery can take us about 1-2 hours.

I feel like I need to stop myself again. First of all, there are just way too much historical and impressive things to see in Moscow, and second of all, I like to tweak the program specifically for every client: we will talk a bit about what kinds of things you would like to see; whether you want to partake in some local traditional activities, or of you want to just look at stuff, and so on. This will give me ideas where should I take you during this tour. For example, some people would, without a glimpse of doubt, prefer spending time in St. Basil Cathedral than in Lenin’s tomb… you get the point. Also, program depends on weather, traffic, time of the day (night Moscow is stunning, by the way), but I’m going to do my best to show you as much as I can for you to keep the best memories about this glorious city.

Last Minute Travel Checklist

In this last minute holiday checklist, I’ve compiled a concise yet comprehensive guide to ensure you’re fully prepared for your spontaneous holiday.

From last minute travel tips to important items to remember, this got you covered.

Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an unexpected adventure, this checklist will help you stay organized and make the most of your last-minute travel plans.

Pre-Travel Checklist

Here are some items for your holiday reminder list to prioritize a few days before you depart. The key to a stress-free trip is being organized, so get these things out of the way as soon as you’ve booked your trip.

1. Double Check Your Travel Plans

Double-checking your travel plans before a trip is essential for a smooth and stress-free journey .

Take a moment to review your flight details, hotel reservations, and any transportation arrangements you’ve made. Verify the dates, times, and locations to check they are accurate.

By confirming your travel plans, you can avoid any last-minute surprises or complications and enjoy a worry-free travel experience from the start.

2. Make Reservations for Accommodation and Car Rental

It’s best to make reservations for accommodation and car rental as far in advance as possible – this might only be a few days in advance, but it’s better than showing up somewhere on the day hoping you can book.

Securing your preferred lodging ensures you have a comfortable place to stay while booking a rental car provides convenience and flexibility during your journey.

By making these arrangements before you arrive, you can guarantee availability and potentially save money . Take the time to research, compare options, and make reservations to ensure a seamless travel experience.

3. Empty Memory Cards and Backup Devices

Don’t forget to empty your memory cards and back up your devices!

This ensures you have sufficient storage space to capture all the wonderful moments during your travels. Additionally, backing up your devices provides an extra layer of security in case of loss or damage.

Stay prepared and ready to capture memories by clearing your memory cards and creating backups before you set off on your adventure.

4. Order Foreign Currency

To ensure smooth financial transactions during your trip, consider ordering foreign currency in advance.

This allows you to have cash on hand for immediate expenses upon arrival, such as transportation and small purchases. Ordering currency ahead of time also allows you to compare exchange rates and potentially save on fees.

5. Purchase Travel Insurance

Another crucial item on your travel checklist is purchasing travel insurance.

It provides a buffer against unexpected events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. Having travel insurance offers peace of mind and ensures you’re prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during your journey.

6. Clear Out Your Travel Wallet/ Purse

Before your trip, take the time to clear out your travel wallet or purse. Remove unnecessary cards, receipts, and any items that you won’t need during your travels.

This helps streamline your wallet, making it easier to access important documents like identification, credit cards, and travel-related information.

7. Check You Have the Correct Adapter Plugs

Before travelling to a different country, it’s essential to check that you have the correct adapter plugs for your electronic devices. Different countries have different electrical outlets, so having the right adapter ensures that you can charge your devices without any issues.

Stay connected and powered up by verifying your adapter plugs before you depart.

8. Arrange Housesitters or Pet Care

If you have pets or need someone to take care of your home while you’re away, it’s important to arrange for housesitters or pet care in advance. This ensures that your furry friends are well taken care of and your home remains secure.

9. Make Sure Bills Are Paid

Part of your checklist to travel should include making sure you’ve paid any outstanding bills.

Before heading off on your trip, it’s crucial to make sure your bills are paid or ensure there’s enough money in your accounts for upcoming payments.

Settle any outstanding balances, such as rent, utilities, and credit card payments. This ensures you won’t have any late fees or disruptions in services while you’re away.

10. Get a Travel Guide

A travel guide can be a valuable companion for your trip, providing valuable information about your destination. From recommended attractions and activities to local customs and transportation options, a travel guide offers insights that enhance your travel experience.

Grab a travel guide tailored to your destination to help you make the most of your trip.

The Day Before You Go – Last Minute Travel Reminders

Now, before you begin on that incredible voyage, here are a few additional things to remember before travelling. Make sure you have finished this checklist before leaving on vacation.

11. Check-in Online

One of the last minute things to do that a lot of people overlook is to check in. To save time and avoid long queues at the airport, take advantage of online check-in.

Most airlines offer this convenient option, allowing you to select seats, print boarding passes, and even drop off your luggage in advance. Online check-in streamlines the airport process, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your journey.

12. Look up the Weather Forecast

Before finishing packing for your trip, be sure to check the weather forecast for your destination. This helps you pack appropriate clothing and accessories, whether it’s sunny and hot or rainy and cool.

By staying informed about the weather conditions, you can better plan and prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

13. Prepare the House

Take some time to prepare your house.

Secure all windows and doors, turn off lights and appliances, and adjust the thermostat to an energy-saving setting. Consider forwarding mail, arranging for plant care, and setting up timers for lights to give the appearance of someone being home.

By preparing your house, you can have peace of mind knowing it’s in order while you’re away.

14. Print Out Important Documentation

As part of your last-minute travel checklist, don’t forget to print out important documentation. This includes your travel itinerary, hotel reservations, flight tickets, and any necessary visas or permits.

Having physical copies of these documents serves as a backup in case of electronic device failure or connectivity issues. Keep your important travel information handy and easily accessible by printing it out before you embark on your journey.

15. Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during travel. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your trip.

Aeroplane cabins and unfamiliar environments can be dehydrating, so keep a refillable water bottle handy and aim to drink water regularly. Proper hydration contributes to your overall well-being and ensures a more comfortable travel experience.

16. Make Sure Electronics Are Charged

Before leaving for your trip, ensure that your electronic devices are fully charged. This includes your smartphone, tablet, camera, and any other gadgets you’ll be taking with you.

Having fully charged devices ensures that you can use them for entertainment, communication, and capturing memories without worrying about running out of battery power.

Last Minute Packing Checklist

Don’t be rushed, and be sure to complete your last-minute packing list! These are the final details to remember and that I always make sure to pack with me for a vacation!

17. Pack Something Warm

One item to add to your last minute vacation travel checklist is something warm. Even if you’re travelling to a warm destination, it’s always a good idea to pack something cosy.

Weather can be unpredictable, and you may encounter cool evenings or heavily air-conditioned spaces. A light jacket, sweater, or scarf can provide comfort and ensure you’re prepared for any unexpected temperature changes during your vacation.

18. A Book or Something to Read

Don’t forget to pack a book or something to read for your vacation. Whether you prefer a paperback, e-reader, or audiobook, having something to delve into during travel or relaxation time can be a delightful escape.

A good book can entertain, inspire, and enhance your vacation experience, allowing you to unwind and immerse yourself in different worlds.

19. Pack Reading Glasses And/or Sunglasses

Reading glasses ensure you can comfortably enjoy books, maps, or any fine print you may come across. Sunglasses protect from the sun’s glare and UV rays, allowing you to explore and enjoy outdoor activities without straining your eyes.

Don’t forget to include these essential things you need for a vacation for clear vision and eye protection on your trip.

20. Medication and First Aid Kit

It’s always essential to pack any necessary medications and a basic first aid kit. Bring an ample supply of your prescription medications, along with any over-the-counter remedies you may need.

Additionally, include items like band-aids, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, and any other essentials for minor injuries or ailments. Having these items on hand ensures you’re prepared to address any health concerns that may arise during your trip.

21. Snacks and Water Bottle

Snacks and a reusable water bottle are essentials for the last minute things to pack for vacation. Having snacks on hand can help keep hunger at bay during long journeys or when you’re on the go.

A refillable water bottle allows you to stay hydrated throughout your trip and helps reduce single-use plastic waste. By packing snacks and a water bottle, you’ll be prepared for hunger pangs and can easily quench your thirst while enjoying your vacation.

22. Pen and Notebook

When preparing things to pack for vacation, remember to pack a pen and notebook.

A pen can come in handy for filling out customs forms, jotting down important information, or even leaving notes for housekeeping.

A small notebook allows you to capture memorable moments, make travel journal entries, or simply jot down any thoughts or ideas that come to mind during your trip.

23. Lipbalm and Moisturiser

Climate changes, sun exposure, and air travel can cause dryness and discomfort. Keep your lips hydrated and your skin moisturized by applying lip balm and moisturizer regularly. These small but essential items will help keep your skin and lips feeling soft, nourished, and protected throughout your trip.

24. Chargers for Phones, Laptops and Other Electronics

Ensure you pack chargers for your phones, laptops, and other electronic devices as part of your last-minute holiday essentials.

Having the necessary chargers will keep your devices powered up and ready for use during your trip. Whether you’re capturing precious moments, staying connected, or navigating with maps, having fully charged electronics is essential for a smooth and enjoyable vacation experience.

25. Hand Sanitizer

As part of your travel preparations, don’t forget to pack hand sanitizer. It’s important to maintain good hand hygiene while travelling, especially in public spaces and during transit.

Hand sanitizer helps kill germs and prevents the spread of illnesses. Keep a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag or pocket for convenient use whenever soap and water are not readily available.

26. Tissues

Tissues come in handy for various situations, such as wiping hands, cleaning surfaces, or even as a makeshift napkin. They’re lightweight and easy to carry, making them a practical addition to your travel essentials.

27. Mints or Chewing Gum

Include mints or chewing gum in your vacation checklist. These small treats can freshen your breath and provide a pleasant taste during long flights, road trips, or sightseeing adventures. Whether it’s for a burst of freshness or to help alleviate ear pressure during flights, mints or chewing gum can be a refreshing addition to your travel essentials.

Moscow is a cold city, and if you want to enjoy it fully while it is sunny, the best time to visit it is during summer. However, summer is the most touristy season , and the prices are very high, but the weather is very nice (from June to August the temperature is about 22° – 24°C).

In Moscow, there is more winter than any other season, so autumn turns cold really fast and the spring comes late. If you want to avoid the crowded season, you can visit the city from April to May and during the fall month of September, when the temperatures are more bearable. Winter in Moscow is snowy and incredibly cold, with temperatures of -10°C in December and January. But this is also a part of its charm.

Its historic buildings describe perfectly the colorful and nice Russian architecture, transporting you back in time. One Day in Moscow

Spending just one day in Moscow is not enough to discover all of its hidden gems, culture, and history, but it is still a great opportunity to meet this fascinating city. Visit and discover the most iconic places in Moscow and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.

Start with a Breakfast at Coffeemania (Kofemaniya Moss)

You have a great day ahead of you, so it is better to start it off with a good breakfast. Coffeemania is one of the most appreciated bars by tourists, especially because it is close to the city center. You can choose from a lot of breakfast options, including vegetarian or vegan meals. It is an excellent cafe with characteristic Russian design that makes the morning experience more enjoyable. There are two Coffeemanias in Moscow, one that is in a mall, and this one which is at 1.8 km from the Red Square, just 20 minutes away.

Admire the Red Square

The Red Square has been an important and iconic place for Moscow since 1400. It became popular and famous after all the military parades, demonstrations, and events that took place here. It is definitely one of the places you should not miss when in Moscow, even if you have just one day here. The Red Square is also incredibly beautiful, as evidenced by its Russian name – the Red Square translates to Krasnaya Ploshchad in Russian, Krasnaya meaning beautiful in old Russian.

Red square, Moscow

Soak in the Beauty of Saint Basil’s Cathedral (Khram Vasiliya Blazhennogo)

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic places in Moscow. Depending on the season, during the day it is very crowded because it is one of the most important tourist attractions. But if you want to visit it during the night, you won’t believe the combination of lights and colors you can see here. Saint Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its bright and colorful cherry onion domes, one of the most important cultural symbols of the country. It was built in 1552 and the legend says that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects. Why? So that they will not build another structure or replicate the existing one.

Saint Basil, Moscow

Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum

Lenin’s Mausoleum is located in the Red Square and it is also known as Lenin’s Tomb. It became one of the major attractions in Moscow, especially because the preserved mummy of Vladimir Lenin is on public display. You do not have to pay for a ticket because the entrance is free. But during tourist season, you might have to wait in line at a queue.

Lenin's mausoleum, Moscow

Discover the Kremlin

The Red Square is a tourist attraction, not only because of its historical and cultural value but also because it is the place where the Kremlin is located. The Kremlin can be seen from the Red Square; however, it takes you 12 minutes to reach it on foot. This magnificent building was built between the 14th and 17th centuries and is one of the most important ones in the country.

Kremlin, Moscow

Kremlin means fortress inside a city, which pretty much describes it perfectly. Inside the Kremlin are five palaces, four cathedrals, 20 towers, and an enclosing wall. The Kremlin Palace , which is located inside the Kremlin is the official residence of the President of Russia. You can visit the Kremlin, and the ticket is around 700 rubles.

Relax in the Alexander Garden (Alexandrovsky Sad)

The Alexander Garden is one of the first public parks built in Moscow, right near the Kremlin, only 6 minutes away. It runs along the length of the western Kremlin wall and it has three separate gardens.

Alexander Gardens, Moscow

The Upper Garden is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , where people pay tribute to the war veterans. Here you will also find some remains of the buildings that celebrated the victory of Russia over Napoleon (which were later destroyed when France occupied Moscow) and an obelisk from Finland that was re-carved when Lenin ruled the country.

Alexander Gardens, Moscow

Have Lunch at Beluga

Beluga is close to Alexander Garden and is rated as one of the best restaurants in Moscow. Here you will have the opportunity to taste the Russian cuisine and discover its gastronomy. It is located in a modern hotel that also offers a rooftop view of the most iconic places, such as the Kremlin.

Visit the Theater Square and the Bolshoi Theatre

The Theater Square of Moscow is another square that is iconic for the capital of Russia. Here you can see the Bolshoi Theatre , where you can also go to see an opera and theater performances. It is an iconic place where Russia developed its artistic side, so it is very much worth visiting. It was built between 1821 and 1825 and it takes you just five minutes to reach it on foot from Beluga.

Bolshoi theatre, Moscow

End the Day with a Night Visit to Artbat

Artbat is not so close to the city center, but the visit during the evening or the night is a great idea. From the Theater Square, you can take the M2 tram and reach it in about 20 minutes, or you can walk and reach it in 40 minutes (it’s only 3km away).

Arbat Street, Moscow

Artbat is a street filled with kiosks with a lot of souvenirs, bars, cafes, and restaurants, so you can have dinner here, too. It is a major tourist attraction, but the locals love it too because here are the Pushkin House (a museum) and the Vakhtangov Theater where you can see artistic performances.

Where to stay in Moscow?

Moscow is one of the biggest cities in Europe, so it has a lot of accommodation options. But taking into consideration that you only get to spend one day there, you may want to choose a location close to the city center. However, public transportation is organized and accessible, so it will be easy to move between locations.

Day Trips from Moscow

There is a lot of nice attractions and places to explore and visit near Moscow. Some of the best day trips include:

Korolev – located just one hour away from Moscow, it is considered a suburb of the capital. However, it has its own identity, which was shaped during World War II. Here was the industrial area of Russia back at the time and also the base for Soviet Space Exploration .

Borodino – if you want to visit the place where Napoleon was defeated by the Russian army , then a two-hour day trip from Moscow to Borodino is what you are looking for. It is not that popular among tourists, so you can enjoy it calmly.

Zvenigorod – if you want to discover the Russian cuisine, then you should head straight to Zvenigorod. Besides the beautiful and impressive monasteries, here you can visit the Museum of Russian Desserts . And the best thing about it is that you can taste them, so it will be a nice gastronomical experience.

Extra Tips for Visiting Moscow

Here are some extra trips you should consider before visiting Moscow .

You need a visa (that you need to pay for) to visit Russia or an invitation from an approved organization.

Always have cash with you because not all shops in Moscow accept credit card payments.

You can use the Metro for transportation, as it is one of the most used, fastest, and cheapest means of transportation in crowded Moscow.

Exploring Moscow in One Day [Top Attractions, Hotels and Tours]

Moscow, the cosmopolitan capital of Russia, oozes of luxury and historic charm.  If you plan on exploring Moscow in one day, you will be surprised to hear that it is very much possible.

I dont say this for most cities, but since almost all architectural wonders are nestled together in the Red Square, its easy to walk around and cover the top attractions of Moscow. At least!

Must Visit Inclusions to Your Moscow One Day Itinerary

st basils cathedral moscow

Exploring Moscow in one day can be easy and fun. Especially if you just want to cover the basics but since I don’t like to rush through destinations, I gave it three days.

If you just have 24 hours, I would suggest covering these just these spots or taking one of the many short guided tours in Moscow.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

St Basil's Cathedral

The onion shaped domes of this church had been on my bucket list since I first saw a picture online. The architecture and the color pops were simply incredible. It looks like an image right out of Aladdin. In reality – it looks just as I imagined it to be.

St Basil’s Catherdral was simply a sight to behold!

I felt like a little kid walking on the pages of a pop up story book as I looked at the funky colors and shape of Saint Basil. Was this place for real, I asked myself!

moscow in one day

If you had time to see one attraction in Moscow, I would say – THIS should be it!

Beware of the crowds though as its quite busy, as is the entire Red Square.

The tourist mecca of Moscow- Red Square , is flocked by hoards of travelers each day. I never anticipated it to be so crowded. At few spots, there were huge queues and barely any space to walk. So when I say its busy, its NOT an understatement.

Walking around red square

However, if you want to see any of the top attractions like the Kremlin, St Basil’s Cathedral, State historical museum or Lenin’s Mausoleum, then this is the place to be.

Iconic buildings of Moscow

While you are here, check out Alexandrovsky Sad (aka Alexander Garden) with the pretty horse fountain.

Spectacular horse fountain at Alexander Garden

If you aren’t too keen on exploring on your own and want some interesting tid-bits of Moscow’s history, then take this two hour guided tour of Red Square .

Wait! Why is a mall on my must visit list? Well, its like no mall I have ever seen. Quite frankly, to me, it looked like a huge Disneyland.

GUM moscow

It is filled with cute ice cream shops, fountains, cartoon characters walking around, peppy music and families with kids running around – Sounds like Disney?

GUM mall moscow

Plus, when you walk around Red Square this is the perfect place to beat the heat (Yes, Moscow can get terribly hot in summers).

Arbat Street

After walking around the red square, you can take the underground to Arbat. Its a popular artsy street full of cafes, shops, eateries, bars, souvenir stands, caricaturists and more.

Caricaturists at Arbat street

As other parts of town, Arbat street is also extremely busy.

Walking around Arbat

Another fun attraction to be covered in Moscow if you just have a day to spare would be the pretty Gorky park of Culture and Leisure .

Its a pure delight for both children and adults. With a lovely lake to relax around, small amusement park for rides, lots of fast food joints, huge ass fountain in the middle, constant events and games for everyone, paths for cycling and skate scooters (plus you can get them on rent here), lounge chairs and huge gardens to lay around in and more! Phew!

gorky park

Gorky is for everyone but beware this is also extremely busy during a hot summer day in Moscow – pretty much all families flock to the park.

gorky park fountain

If there is one thing I learnt from exploring Moscow in 24 hours, was that if you have young kids – you will absolutely love it. There is tons to do in Moscow for families with young ones, that’s for sure. Extremely kid-friendly and fun city.

While you are at Gorky, you can even check out this private boat tour which shows all iconic attractions from a different perspective.

Moscow Underground Stations

Just like the stunning St Petersburg’s metro stations , Moscow has its own underground architectural delights. From the deepest metro station to the most stunning ones, Moscow’s stations are indeed sights to behold.

I would highly recommend taking a tour of the Moscow underground .

Moscow at night

Moscow is simply one of the most stunning cities at night, I have ever seen. No doubt about it.

I got to Moscow from St Petersburg around 2230 hrs and as soon as I stepped out of the station, I was simply looking all around in complete awe.

Moscow is not just a rich metropolis – it LOOKS like one!

Moscow at night is quite a sight

Plus if you have time, I would recommend checking the bridge’s open across the Neva river at night. This starts at 0125 hrs and lasts till wee hours of dawn. Be aware that the roads to the city are shut temporarily but there are alternative routes or you can wait it out.

Need help? Just book a guided Moscow walking tour at night , for €15 to give you a good insight into this sparkling city.

Where to Stay in Moscow?

Moscow has many budget and mid-range options to stay. However, the only way to do a rich metropolitan city, the right way, is to live it up in style. However, before you set off booking your hotel stay, ensure you get the Russian visa beforehand.

For my stay, I chose the swanky Swissotel Krasnye Holmy Moscow in Moscow, and I couldn’t have been happier. My room on the 25th floor gave me awesome views of the city below.

Admiring the epic city views at Swissotel

Watching the spectacular city lights at night with a bottle of wine and waking up to incredible sun rises and a cup of coffee was the norm for my three days at Swissotel.

room at swissotel

My evenings, after exploring the city, were spent working from the plush executive lounge of Swissotel. With unlimited snacks and alcohol every evening, I noticed it was quite popular among fellow entrepreneurs.

executive lounge in Swissotel

The in-house gym, sauna and indoor pool was also impeccable. Though I didn’t get a chance to enjoy these services for guests, personally.

The lovely indoor pool at Swissotel

Honestly, I couldn’t have done Moscow any other way – Swissotel was the perfect choice.

I know so little about Moscow, so it was really nice to come across your article. I was surprised to learn that Moscow gets really hot in summer. Arbat street looks like my kind of place, and I definitely would like to check out the underground to see what the fuss is about… Looks like you had a beautiful stay at the Swissotel too. Nice post.

6 Last-Minute Travel Tips for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

I n less than a month, people will look to the sky as the moon passes between the sun and the Earth in a celestial event known as a total solar eclipse . The phenomenon is set for April 8, 2024, and the next one that can be seen from contiguous United States will be August 2044 , so it's unsurprising that eclipse fever has gripped the nation. Between 1 and 4 million people are predicted to travel to the path of totality, joining the 31 million people already living within it.

Among the tours, cruises, hotels, and even scenic flights offering their own spin on the total solar eclipse experience, here are six tips that last-minute planners should keep in mind for the special day.

1. Figure out where you want to go

There are 13 U.S. states on the path of this year's eclipse: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine (small parts of Tennessee and Michigan are also in the path). Among all of these states, totality will occur in two national parks-Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio-and they're expected to get crowded. Instead, consider one of the more than 100 state parks along the path, some of which are more off the radar. If you're more of a city dweller, you can also experience totality in big cities, including San Antonio, Austin, Cleveland, and Rochester.

Consider the weather, too. According to NOAA 's past weather records, April weather seems to bring more chances of rain-meaning more potential for cloud coverage-in the Northeast than in the South.

2. Consider the length of totality

Aiming for a destination in the path of totality is a no-brainer, although the amount of totality you'll get depends on where you go. The closer to the center of the path of totality an area is, the longer the total eclipse lasts. Take Austin and Dallas: While both are on the path of totality, Austin will get 1 minute and 46 seconds of totality, while Dallas will get 3 minutes and 52 seconds of totality. The longest duration you can get for totality is about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Particularly traveler-friendly spots to maximize your time in the dark are Texas Hill Country towns like Kerrville (which will receive around 4 minutes and 24 seconds of totality and is partnering with NASA) and Fredericksburg (which is set to get 4 minutes 23 seconds of totality). Texas Hill Country is also one of AFAR's best places to go in 2024 .

3. Consider camping

If you want a solar eclipse experience surrounded by nature rather than people, camping may suit you better. But booking developed campgrounds at state parks and well-known nature spots will likely be difficult at this point. As an alternative, check for privately owned land through platforms like Hipcamp or look for dispersed camping sites in a national forest, like Ozark National Forest or Green Mountain National Forest . While backcountry spots may not have amenities, they can be perfect for those seeking solitude.

In addition, be sure to check the capacity of a park when it comes to handling the influx of visitors for April 8. As an example, Erie's tourism board is discouraging visits to Presque Isle State Park to prevent bottleneck traffic from its one entry and exit point.

4. Look into a town, festival, or last-minute tour

Plenty of places within the path of totality are putting their own spin on the solar eclipse with dedicated festivities. Get an educational experience at Rochester Museum & Science Center's ROC the Eclipse Festival , a three-day event that includes talks titled "Frontiers of Plasma Physics" and "The Search for Earth-Like Planets" from science experts. Or lean into grandeur at the four-day Texas Eclipse Festival in Burnet, Texas; its lineup includes music performances, yoga sessions, and immersive art experiences. (If you're heading to Texas for the eclipse event in general, check out this interactive map of special activities happening across the state.)

If the mere thought of navigating trip logistics brings a headache, check for the availability of some solar eclipse tours. Some tours still have availability, like Holland America Line's whopping 22-day Solar Eclipse cruise tour through North America. Others, like Travel Quest's Mexico's Copper Canyon Total Solar Eclipse tour , only have wait-list spots. But don't give up hope: As last-minute cancellations roll in, a quick call could secure you a place.

5. Try to get a last-minute spot at hotels in the path of totality

Hotels are leaning into the solar eclipse experience too, and properties are throwing celebrations and dedicated solar eclipse events just for the event. Miraval Austin Resort and Spa is hosting a viewing session with its astrologer, while Hôtel Swexan in Dallas is offering solar eclipse wellness activities on the evening of April 8 that includes meditation, a sound bath, and a Reiki healing session.

Keep in mind that a last-minute booking may cost a premium. Properties all across the band of totality are recording sky-high prices -even budget hotels . Similar to booking tours, do your due diligence and call to check for a cancellation.

6. Come prepared

Of course, you should wear solar eclipse glasses to prevent permanent damage to your eyes. If you're going to an event, check to see if they will be provided or if you'll need to bring your own. If you don't want to buy them, you can use household materials like cardboard to make your own pinhole projector , a contraption that allows you to see the sun change shape as the moon crosses in front of it.

In addition to bringing materials for the day of the event, anticipate what happens next. The length of totality is less than five minutes, but the traffic afterwards may disrupt your plans for hours. If you're coming from a crowded park or city, be on the safe side and come prepared with extra snacks and water.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun in total alignment.

What to do if your flight is canceled.

Follow these steps in the event your flight is canceled.

Flight Canceled or Delayed? What to Do

Canceled flights

Getty Images

Key Takeaways

  • Airlines will soon be required to automatically refund travelers for canceled flights.
  • You will be eligible for a refund if your domestic flight is delayed by more than three hours, or if your international flight delay exceeds six hours.
  • Using the airline's app or calling an international airline number is often the quickest way to rebook a flight.
  • The DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard shows what each major domestic airline will or will not provide in the event of a cancellation or delay currently.

In April 2024, the Department of Transportation announced a new series of protections for air travelers , including automatic refunds for canceled flights and, in some cases, flight delays. Airlines in the U.S. have six months until they will be expected to start implementing the new rule.

If your flight has been canceled or delayed, read on for step-by-step instructions on how to rearrange your travel plans and whether or not you are eligible for a refund at this time.

What to do if your flight is canceled

1. get on the airline's app – or make an international call.

First, pull up the airline's app on your phone. Most airline apps allow you to easily rebook your flight for free, provided you can supply your six-character reservation code. Getting in line to speak with an agent and calling the airline while you wait is also a good idea (albeit slower than using an app), and social media messaging, texting or WhatsApp may prove helpful. "During times of mass travel disruption, you should try all different avenues for getting help," says Nick Ewen, director of content at The Points Guy.

Ewen also recommends a lesser-known tactic: calling the airline's international numbers. Airlines have offices in Canada, Mexico, the U.K. and more. "While it can be costly, you can often get through to an agent more quickly," Ewen says.

Note that, depending on why your flight was canceled, finding seats on a new flight may alter your travel plans considerably.

2. Book a hotel

Next, determine if you need overnight accommodations. "If you were originally booked on the last flight of the night and there are no other options, grab a hotel room near the airport before they're all taken," Ewen advises.

3. Ask for a refund

If the airline cancels your flight and you're forced to change your travel plans, you are entitled to a cash refund per federal law . Unfortunately, getting a refund can be a lengthy and frustrating process. Most airlines will instead offer a credit for future travel, but before you accept, note that travel credits can come with restrictions, such as blackout dates

Soon, airlines will be expected to issue refunds within seven business days — either in cash or on the credit card you used to book your flight — if you turn down a travel credit.

4. Reference the DOT Cancellation and Delay Dashboard

While you're entitled to a full refund, other flight cancellation policies may vary by airline. Go to the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard to see what each major airline will and will not offer in the event of a controllable cancellation.

What to do if your flight is delayed

Currently, airlines are not legally obligated to give you a refund for a flight delay unless the DOT determines the delay to be "significant," a term that's defined on a case-by-case basis.

The DOT's new rule defines "significant changes" for the first time, and when it goes into effect later this year, you will be eligible for a refund in the following scenarios:

  • Departure or arrival times for domestic flights exceed three hours
  • Departure or arrival times for international flights exceed six hours
  • There's an increase in the number of connections
  • Departures or arrivals take place at a different airport than the one(s) you booked
  • You're downgraded to a lower flight class than the one you booked
  • You have a disability and your connections are at different airports and/or on different flights that are less accessible

Research other flights

Investigate what other flights on that airline are headed to your destination and ask an agent if they can get you on one of them (without charging change fees). Also be sure to look into what's available on other airlines: If your original airline doesn't have any flights available on your departure date, an agent may be able to book you on a flight with a different carrier at no additional cost to you. Note, however, that airlines are not legally required to do this.

Inquire about other compensation

If you've been stranded at the airport for several hours, check in with an agent and reference the Commitments for Controllable Delays section on the DOT's Cancellation and Delay Dashboard – regardless of whether you're able to get on another flight. Some airlines may provide amenities such as vouchers for meals or overnight accommodations.

Frequently Asked Questions

"The main causes for flight disruptions are bad weather, understaffed air traffic control, and factors within the airline’s control,"  says Katy Nastro, a spokesperson at Going.com, formerly Scott's Cheap Flights. She explains the following:

  • Weather:  This is outside of the airline's control and is the single biggest reason for why we see flight disruptions. We saw this play out over the winter holidays in 2022, and even to some extent during the 2023 holiday season. Even if the weather is accurately predicted, it cannot be controlled, which means at times flight disruptions are unavoidable.
  • Understaffed air traffic control:  The U.S. air travel industry has made strides in pilot hiring year over year, but when it comes to air traffic control, we are still down roughly 1,000 fewer air traffic controllers from a decade ago. New York metro area airports specifically have felt the brunt of this deficit, so much so that airlines were permitted to reduce schedules without penalty from the summer until the end of Q4 in 2023. At its lowest, the decrease in flights in the New York metro area resulted in about 11% fewer flights per day. With less trained staff, current air traffic controllers are stretched to the limit, and schedule reductions only temporarily solve this problem. Even with aggressive hiring efforts, training takes time and will not be a quick fix.

It's almost impossible to avoid canceled or delayed flights these days. But there are a few things you can do when booking flights to lessen your chances for travel disruptions.

Keep tabs on your aircraft: On your departure date, check your flight information before heading to the airport. You can keep a watchful eye on the flight's status – including the aircraft scheduled to operate your flight – using the airline's app or a third-party app such as FlightAware Flight Tracker (which also offers a website ), FlightRadar24 or TripIt Pro.

"As an example, if you're flying from Orlando to New York, and your plane is flying in from Chicago, the initial flight from Chicago to Orlando might be delayed (or canceled) before yours is," Ewen explains. "Airlines will try to find replacement aircraft in that case, but if you can identify a potential cancellation before it officially happens, you may be able to get rebooked ahead of the other 100-plus passengers on your flight."

Consider an alternate airport: When booking your flight, you may consider flying out of a different airport than the one you typically depart from. For example, a small regional airport with limited routes may mean less travel delays and hassle overall – or it may be worth driving further to another international airport for a nonstop flight to your destination rather than opting for a connecting flight close to home.

Fly in the morning: While flight disruptions are unpredictable, historically fewer cancellations and delays occur in the morning.

Avoid weekend travel: Fly on off-peak days like Tuesday or Wednesday. You'll often find cheaper flights on these days, too.

Opt for longer layovers: If you need to take more than one flight to reach your destination, book a flight with a longer layover to provide enough time to make your connecting flight. Keep in mind that at some airports you may need to go through security or customs for your connection. For longer journeys, you can reduce the risk of missing connecting flights by planning a city stopover. For example, Icelandair offers Iceland stopovers for no additional airfare.

Consider a credit card with travel protections: You don't need to be a frequent traveler to take advantage of credit card travel protections and perks. Here are a couple options to consider:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred :  This travel credit card ($95 annually) provides coverage for delays and cancellations when used to book flights. It also provides other travel protections such as delayed baggage coverage. "Even someone who travels just once or twice a year can still get phenomenal value from this card," Ewen says.
  • American Express Platinum Card :  This card ($695 annually) offers travel insurance that reimburses some nonrefundable expenses like hotel accommodations, meals and other essentials as long as the trip was purchased using the card.

When choosing a travel credit card, you should also pay attention to other benefits. Even the most basic airline credit cards can offer travel perks like discounts on in-flight purchases and waived baggage fees, while premium travel credit cards (which require a higher annual fee) can include access to an airport lounge with food, drinks and Wi-Fi. Some also provide a concierge service to rebook flights or built-in trip insurance to cover unforeseen expenses.

Purchase travel insurance: If your credit card doesn't include travel protections, consider purchasing insurance with flight coverages – even a cheap travel policy can help protect your investment. Covered reasons include a travel carrier delay and loss or theft of travel documents, among other scenarios. If you're interested in purchasing a policy, you can browse the best travel insurance companies here .

Talk to a travel advisor: "Booking directly with your travel advisor provides more leverage and support if something goes wrong," explains Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer . "We can advocate for a better outcome should there be cancellations or hiccups in the itinerary."

Charlotte French, owner of Cavatica Luxury Travel , agrees, sharing this recent example: "My clients were booked on a nonstop United Flight from Tokyo (HND) to EWR (Newark) in business class, when it was canceled (due to technical issues). The clients were waiting in line to find other options for their return flight home; however, these were very limited. In parallel, I was able to speak to the United Airlines corporate desk (as a travel advisor) and was able to secure them in business class on a flight out of Tokyo the same day."

Avoid checking luggage: Travelers who only travel with a carry-on bag and/or personal item (such as a backpack or purse) that meet carry-on size restrictions will have the most flexibility in rebooking – and will also avoid the chance of lost luggage, another common issue. Some carriers will try to move checked luggage to a later flight for you and will make every effort to keep you and your belongings together. However, when airlines don't have interline agreements with other carriers, you'll have to allow enough time to retrieve and recheck your own luggage.

The number of canceled flights recently fell to its lowest rate in at least a decade — a welcome change for air travelers, especially following COVID-19-era travel disruptions.

Still, flight cancellations will always be inevitable, especially during the busy summer travel season. Summer 2024 is shaping up to be especially busy. "It was the busiest March on record for air travel according to the TSA," explains Nastro. "It also had the tenth busiest day on record, which is pretty significant since it is not a 'peak period' and is generally considered off-season in the Northern Hemisphere. If this trend continues, we are likely in for the busiest summer on record when it comes to air travel."

Last-minute travelers can take comfort that an airline has plenty of deals available for a summer getaway.  Allegiant Airlines , a discount carrier based in Las Vegas, recently began offering hundreds of last-minute flight deals with wide availability through August 2024 to popular summer destinations including Austin, Chicago, New York City, Orlando, and more.  Passengers can visit Allegiant’s sale page , and enter their desired departure city to find deals from their home market, and even set a budget for the maximum amount they would like to pay for flights. There is no scheduled end date for the sale, and fare prices are subject to change.  Travel + Leisure spotted a wide availability of flights to and from popular Florida summer destinations including:

  • Austin to Orlando - $48
  • Austin to Sarasota - $46
  • Chicago to Destin / Fort Walton Beach - $58
  • Kansas City to Tampa - $52
  • Kansas City to Destin - $53
  • Kansas City to Punta Gorda - $54
  • New York City/Newark to Destin / Fort Walton Beach - $82

The fares provided are in Allegiant's "Basic" category of fares, which only include one personal item, and not a carry-on or checked bag. For an added fee, passengers can add these options to their fare.   For travelers seeking summer destination inspiration, Allegiant also has dozens of deals available from Los Angeles to Kalispell, MT, which is near Glacier National Park . Travelers can also save on flights to Las Vegas, NV from Austin, TX, Des Moines, IA and Grand Rapids, MI.  Allegiant is known for its expansive route map and non-stop service to smaller communities.  “We have a long history of providing a great service at an attractive price for our customers,”  Allegiant's President Greg Anderson said in a May 2024 earnings call . “And, our differentiated model is focused on being the only nonstop carrier on the vast majority of our 525 routes.”

Encourage your little one (and their iPad-doting Dad) to step away from the screens and spend some time doodling in the pages of this book. Just follow the prompts — some will have Dad draw first (or vice versa), while others can be done simultaneously.

Yahoo readers can't get enough of this top-selling slime . OK, it's not just any ol' goo — he can press it into cup holders, air vents and other hard-to-reach areas, then peel it away to remove crumbs, dust and other unwanted debris.

If he's prone to losing things, then it's high time he puts AirTags on everything . Pick up this sleek cardholder with a built-in compartment, so he can track down his wallet in the (un)likely event that he misplaces it. It doesn't come with an AirTag, but you can snag one for just $25 bringing the total to under $35. That's a steal!

He takes his snacking seriously — so much so that he’ll put this double-layered bowl to good use. Here’s how it works: Put olives, pistachios, wrapped candy or something else with a removable outer layer in the main bowl, then drop the scraps in the hidden compartment underneath.

Is he still on the Wordle train? There's no stopping him now, especially if you pick up this two to four-player game inspired by the daily puzzler. Instead of flying solo, he'll compete against others IRL to see who can guess the word in the fewest tries.

Whether he’s a first-time dad, proud uncle or newly-crowned grandpa, he knows just how important it is to start ‘em young. This alphabet book will introduce his future putting partner to legends like Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson, and maybe it’ll serve as inspiration for a life on the green. (Psst, take a peek at our gift guide for golfers for even more ideas.)

You've got your Stanley cup, but Dad? He's more a Yeti kind of guy. This beloved tumbler is designed to be taken on the road — it fits in most cupholders, has a magnetic slider on the lid to keep drinks in, and is made with puncture and rust-resistant materials.

When testing MagSafe battery packs , our tech editor said this one “makes the others look like slackers.” It’s easy to see why: This do-it-all charger can power up his iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods without any extra cables or cords. But in the rare event that he needs even more power, he can use the built-in lightning and USB-C cables to charge other stuff.

At this rate, he has barbecue sauce pulsing through his veins. And while he loves Sweet Baby Ray’s as much as the next day, surprise (and delight) his tastebuds with this pack of four Japanese barbecue sauces. That’s right, they’re perfectly savory-sweet but have hints of umami, teriyaki, miso and yuzu.

Oh, the places he’ll go! Tell him to hang this scratch-and-reveal poster in clear view, so he can keep his eye on the prize and remember all the natural wonders that he still has to check off his list.

Once you go digital, you’ll never go back. And if he’s going to wear his Apple Watch to weddings, nice dinners and more formal events, then get him this interchangeable leather band to make sure it looks the part. Pick between black and brown — or get him both, so he can match any outfit.

Try as he might, he can’t adopt the “set it and forget it” mentality when it comes to his beard. This three-step system makes grooming a breeze — get rid of dirt and oil with the cleanser, prep the skin for shaving with a moisturizing lotion and hydrate the hair itself with a vitamin-packed oil.

No matter if he’s hiking the trails or jet-setting across the globe, he’ll be able to enjoy the caffeinated comforts of home, aka a fresh cup of coffee. This on-the-go brewer makes an 8-ounce coffee or up to three concentrated shots similar to espresso. Pair it with a bag of his favorite coffee grounds, so he can put it to use stat.

He needs one pair of headphones for his phone, and another to watch movies on the airplane … what gives? This small-but-mighty gadget will let him connect his Bluetooth headphones — AirPods, Bose QuietComfort, you name it — to any stereo or speaker, including the ones on the airplane. Splash out on the more advanced model, which lets him connect two pairs of headphones — his and his travel buddy’s. Our tech editor Rick Broida put this magical dongle to the test and said it “worked flawlessly.”

Finding a way to relieve Dad's aches and pains? Now, you might just become his favorite. There are a million massage guns to choose from (Theragun, looking at you), but this affordable pick from Renpho earned our tech editor's stamp of approval . "Another Renpho product offering maximum bang for the buck (almost literally in this case)," he wrote, adding that its accompanying app is a nice touch, especially since it's full of guided massages and tips.

How's his grill brush looking? If he's using a wire one, it's time to swap it for something safer (FYI, loose bristles can get lodged in food) like this firefighter-backed steamer. Just run the brush under water, then fire up the grill and wipe away buildup on the grates. After five to ten uses, pop the sponge in the dishwasher to make it look like new.

Nothing tops some well-intentioned quality time with dear old Dad. Hand him this voucher in person or send it via email, then leave it to him to pick from thousands of two-person activities. There's something for the thrill-seekers (shark diving in Hawaii), foodies (a taco tour in Austin) and everyone in between.

At what point do dads become novice bird watchers? I'll never know, but what I do know is that smart bird feeders are one of the most sought-after Father's Day gifts this year. This Amazon favorite takes photos and videos of the winged wonders that make a pit stop, plus it uses AI recognition to identify the exact specifics. He'll get a notification on his phone or iPad when it happens, so he won't miss a thing.

He’ll feel like he’s walking on clouds each and every time he slips on these light-as-a-feather sneakers. One happy shopper raved that they wear the bestselling kicks “twelve hours a day with no pain.” A tip: Several reviewers suggest going up half a size since they run on the smaller side.

Meet Dad’s new BFF. This little guy runs around the bottom of the pool vacuuming up dirt, debris or anything else that’s in its path. “I love my little underwater 'roomba,'" one five-star fan wrote, adding that it was "easy to use, easy to retrieve too."

Perhaps, the best Father's Day gift you can give is a listening ear. Sign him up for a Storyworth subscription and each week, he'll be prompted to think back to past moments that shaped him, reflect on the present and make predictions about his future. His weekly writings and accompanying photos will be bound into a hardcover book when the year's up. It pays to wait: Save $10 now through June 16.

Because you can certainly teach an old dog new tricks. Even if he’s read every history book imaginable, this monthly subscription will give him an even closer look at America’s past. Each month, he’ll get a realistic replication of an important document, letter or police report from the last 100-plus years or so.

Dad’s funny from his head to his toes. Speaking of toes (like what I did there, don’t ya?), get him this monthly sock subscription so they’re appropriately dressed for even the silliest of occasions. Select the start date, size and quantity (save $6 if you get two pairs); Foot Cardigan does the rest.

Give the gift of learning this Father's Day. For just $10 a month, he can take unlimited online classes taught by experts in their craft. You know what that means, don't you? In no time, he'll be cooking up a storm like Gordon Ramsey or writing thrillers that'll rival Dan Brown's (in his eyes, at least).

Buying something specific to Dad’s hobby is always a bold move, which is why you turn to the pros for guidance. As far as anglers are concerned, Catch Co knows just the thing that’ll make their fish-loving heart skip a beat. Each month, they curate a box full of baits and lures (a minimum of five total) that he can use the next time he’s out on the water.

The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication.
