Throughout history, it suffered from bombings, served as a prison, and was completely abandoned until 1963 when it was reopened again.

Nowadays, inside the castle complex, you can visit the museum, La Torreta keep, the ancient remains of the fortress, and a few more important historic structures dating from the 18th century. There is also a cafeteria where you can take a coffee and admire the most spectacular views of the city and its port. Entry to the castle is free unless you access it by lift.

Cruising from the Port of Alicante is an exciting experience that allows you to explore the Mediterranean and discover the wonders of this beautiful region. To make the most of your cruise journey, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Plan your arrival: Be sure to check the embarkation details provided by your cruise line to ensure a smooth arrival at the port. Allow ample time to navigate through security, check-in, and board your ship. Arriving early can help avoid any last-minute rush or stress.
  • Explore Alicante pre or post-cruise: Alicante has plenty to offer, so consider arriving a day or two before your cruise or extending your stay after disembarking. Take the opportunity to explore the city’s attractions, indulge in local cuisine, and soak up the vibrant culture.
  • Pack appropriately: Check the weather forecast for your cruise dates and pack accordingly. Alicante enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, but it’s always a good idea to pack a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Also, don’t forget to bring comfortable walking shoes, swimwear for beach visits, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Don’t miss the local gastronomy: Alicante is renowned for its delicious cuisine. Make sure to sample the traditional dishes, such as paella, tapas, and fresh seafood. Explore local markets and eateries near the port to experience the authentic flavors of the region.
  • Stay hydrated: Cruising can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout your journey. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of water to keep yourself refreshed and energized.
  • Stay connected: Before your cruise, check your mobile phone plan to see if it includes international roaming or consider purchasing a local SIM card to stay connected. Most cruise ships offer onboard Wi-Fi, but it’s advisable to check the cost and availability in advance.
  • Participate in ship activities: Take advantage of the onboard activities and entertainment options offered by your cruise line. From live shows and musical performances to fitness classes and lectures, there’s something for everyone. Engaging in these activities will enhance your overall cruise experience.
  • Stay organized: Keep your important documents, such as passports, boarding passes, and cruise itinerary, in a secure and easily accessible place. Consider making copies of these documents and keeping them separate from the originals as a precaution.
  • Respect local customs: When exploring Alicante or other ports of call, be mindful of local customs and traditions. Dress appropriately when visiting religious sites, be respectful of local customs and traditions, and remember to ask for permission before taking photos of locals.
  • Purchase travel insurance: Protect your trip by purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and other unforeseen circumstances. This will provide peace of mind and ensure you are adequately protected throughout your journey.

Alicante Cruise Port: What to Do in 8 Hours

Overlooking Alicante cruise port, stylish marina and city beach is Mount Benacantil, an iconic rock formation which has served a defensive function for the different civilisations which have settled on this coastline over the centuries. The first settlers were Iberian tribes as far back as 5000 BC who were replaced by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans before the city was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century.

Table of Contents

It was under Moorish rule that a fortification was first built on top of Mount Benacantil to protect the city. As you walk towards the city from the port take a look at the south-western slope of this hill and see if you can spot ‘La Cara del Moro’ – the Moor’s face. Today the medieval Castle of Santa Barbara sits on top of the hill and is Alicante’s main historic attraction.

Below Mount Benacantil is the Port of Alicante which is a very busy maritime destination attracting almost 100,000 cruise ship passengers per year as well as many North African people heading over to Algeria on international ferries.

The cruise port lies just west of the marina, very close to the old town, with most cruise ships docking at the outer sea wall along Muelle Levante. From the Alicante cruise port terminal to the entrance to the port complex is approximately 1.5km. Passengers can either walk this distance or wait a few minutes for the free shuttle bus which drop them off at the port entrance.

Alicante Cruise Port: Getting Around

Alicante Cruise Port Authority’s shuttle bus will drop passengers off at Plaza Puerta Del Mar next to the port entrance. From here most passengers will be able to walk around the city’s main attractions. Simply turn left (west) to take a stroll along the beautiful esplanade or turn right (east) to go to the beach at Playa del Postiguet. If you’re heading for Santa Barbara Castle it’s best to walk to the elevator opposite the beach which takes you to the top of Mount Benacantil.

Hop-on, Hop-off Bus

Alternatively, you can take the tourist bus service from Plaza Puerta Del Mar which offers a ten stop itinerary including the castle. This is a useful service for visitors with limited mobility but isn’t as rewarding as walking around the city as the bus route cannot access much of the old town.

Self-Guided City Tour

There’s a tourist office on Plaza Puerta del Mar where you can pick up city maps, otherwise you can go to the city’s main tourist information office located at Rambla Méndez Núñez, 41. There are some useful apps available for download on the official Alicante tourism website .

What to See in Alicante

Castillo de Santa Barbara: Looking down on you over to the north-east as you alight from the shuttle bus in Plaza Puerta del Mar is the 16th century Castle of Santa Barbara. The walk to the top from the northern side is not recommended in the heat of the summer, instead visitors should take the lift which leaves from just opposite El Postiguet beach. The castle stands 166 metres above the city which gives visitors great views over the old town and the Mediterranean.

Barrio de Santa Cruz: The walk down from the castle through Parque de La Ereta to Barrio de Santa Cruz (at the top of the old town) is highly recommended provided you can cope with all the steps. This is the oldest part of the city where people still live in colourful houses elaborately decorated with flower pots. There are many nice bars and restaurants tucked away in this friendly neighbourhood where you can sit at an outdoor terrace and enjoy the atmosphere of this charming area.

Basilica de Santa Maria: With its Valencian-Gothic façade this is the city’s oldest church which was built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site where a mosque used to stand. It is located in the delightful Plaza Santa Maria within a short walk of the entrance to the port.

Playa del Postiguet: Just east of the entrance to the Alicante cruise port, on the other side of the Hotel Meliá Alicante, is a popular sandy beach which is packed with local people at weekends. It’s safe to swim here and has been awarded a blue-flag for its cleanliness. Even if you don’t fancy a dip it’s a lovely place to stroll along the palm lined boardwalk at the back of the beach in the shadow of Mount Benacantil. There are plenty café-bars and restaurants overlooking the beach where you can enjoy a pleasant lunch with sea views.

Paseo de la Explananda de España: Heading west from the entrance to the port in the opposite direction of the beach is Alicante’s famous esplanade which has been constructed with millions of colourful bricks in a mosaic pattern. Every evening it seems like the whole of the city is out on this boulevard for their daily ‘paseo’. Being located so close to the port makes it an ideal spot for passengers to take an afternoon stroll in the shade of the palm trees whilst stopping for a drink or an ice cream at one of the many cafés before returning to their ship.

Mercado Central (Avenida Alfonso El Sabio 8): Right in front of the Central Market, just north of the old town, is a famous square known as La Plaza de las Flores. It was here in May 1938 that more than 300 civilians died at the hands of Italian bombers during the Spanish Civil War. Relatively little has been written about the atrocities of this deadly bombing campaign compared with what happened at Guernica in the Basque Country yet it was every bit as horrendous an event.

Standing on two floors the market remains central to daily life in the city and is a great place to visit as a tourist (unless you’re a vegetarian). Downstairs you’ll find a great selection of stalls selling fresh fish and vegetables then upstairs there are meat stalls selling produce from all over the country as well as some friendly tapas bars where you can have lunch in the company of stallholders and local shoppers.

Rambla de Méndez Núñez: For more commercial shopping take a stroll along the La Rambla which is the city’s main arterial road running from the Explananda de España near the port almost to the Central Market. It is also home to many banks, bars and restaurants.

Archaeological Museum (MARQ): (Plaza Doctor Gómez Ulla): It’s highly unlikely that you’ll arrive in Alicante on a rainy day, but if you do a visit to the city’s archaeological museum is highly recommended. It houses a number of galleries dedicated to the multiple civilisations who have settled in the region over many centuries and was once awarded the prestigious European Museum of the Year award.

Shore Excursions from Alicante Cruise Port

Whilst you’ll have no problem enjoying a day in Alicante, some passengers like to head out of the city on shore excursions to one of a number of interesting destinations which include the following:

Elche: Lying just 30km south-west of Alicante, the city of Elche is notable for having three inclusions on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are the Palm Grove, the Mystery Play and the School Museum of Pusol. The ‘Palmeral de Elche’ is the main attraction for day visitors along with the 12th century Altamira Castle, the Basilica de Santa María and the charming old town known as El Barrio del Raval. If you can’t book an excursion with your cruise company you can easily take a bus or train from Alicante which both take around 30 minutes each way. Alternatively, you could share a taxi with some fellow passengers from the port entrance.

Guadalest: This charming village lies further afield standing some 60km to the north-east, inland from the popular holiday resort of Benidorm . It is best known for its 11th century Moorish castle and is home to a few novel museums such as the Doll’s House Museum, the Salt and Pepper Pots Museum and the Medieval Torture Museum. Unfortunately, its proximity to the holiday resorts of the Costa Blanca and its designation as a ‘Monument of Historical and Artistic Value’ means it is often mobbed with tourists. Public transport from Alicante isn’t a possibility considering your limited time in port so taking an official shore excursion is your only option.

Isla de Tabarca: You’ll probably have spent enough time at sea by the time you arrive in the Port of Alicante, however, there is an interesting boat trip which deserves a mention. Lying almost 20km to the south, offshore from the resort of Santa Pola, is an interesting island destination which once served as a refuge for Barbary pirates. Today it is a marine reserve which is home to a small fishing fleet. Tourists can visits relics of its colourful past, relax on its glorious beaches and dine in some fine restaurants. Departure times for the one hour journey from Alicante vary throughout the year so you should check timetables on the Cruceros Kontiki Website .

Cruise Extensions: Practicalities

Alicante Airport: This busy airport lies approximately 15km south-west of Alicante cruise port. The frequent C-6 bus runs between the arrivals terminal and the city centre. Many taxis and private shuttle services are available.

Alicante: the jewel of the Costa Blanca

Alicante is the undisputed jewel of the Costa Blanca, nestled between the mountains and the sea, and has become an important cruise port, especially for cruises to the Canary Islands and overseas.

The boat stop is usually 9/10 hours. Here you’ll find miles of beautiful beaches, but that’s not all… let’s see what else there is to discover in this delightful seaside town.

The city center is not far from the cruise terminal (a little more than 2 km.) and is easily reached by shuttle/bus/taxi or on foot, walking along a wonderful avenue that serves as a promenade, the Explanada de España , the main street, which consists of a long tree-lined pedestrian avenue carpeted with mosaic tiles.

There are some very interesting sculptures in this area, the most famous of which is a surfer coming out of the water.

Explanada de espana

Explanada de espana

The main monument in Alicante is the Castle of Santa Barbara , a fortress located on a promontory overlooking the city.

It is one of the most spectacular buildings in the city and one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain.

To reach the Castle, it is advisable to take the elevator located right in front of Playa del Postiguet . From the highest point of the Castle you will have a wonderful view of the city and the beach.

Inside the Castle of Santa Bárbara you can visit the Museum of the City of Alicante , made up of five rooms with a permanent exhibition tracing the history of the city.

Spiaggia e promontorio del Castello di Santa Barbara

Spiaggia e promontorio del Castello di Santa Barbara

Another museum of great interest is the Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante (MACA), which houses several masterpieces by famous artists such as Picasso, Miró and Dali. It also houses magnificent permanent collections, such as the 20 th Century Art Collection and the Juana Francés Collection. The museum is located in the Asegurada building, the original Casa de la Asegurada.

Other points of interest include:

The Basilica of Santa María , a 14 th century building built on the remains of the largest Islamic mosque in Alicante.

The fortress of San Fernando , known locally as Castell de Sant Ferran, is an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy stunning views of the sea. Near the Castle is the Monte Tossal Park .

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari, is located in the old town. Built on the site of a mosque, it is decorated with marble and jasper. Don’t miss the Communion Chapel, which contains the bust and relics of St. Felicita of Alicante, St. Rocco and St. Francis Xavier.

On the other hand, if your main interest is the beaches and you want to spend a relaxing day under the sun, we recommend some beaches.

Postiguet Beach , is a strip of sand about 800 meters long. It is located near the city center, at the foot of the Castle of Santa Bárbara, not far from the famous Explanada de España promenade.

Albufereta Beach , located between Serra Grossa and Tossal de Manises, is a small beach of fine golden sand that is a meeting place for the citizens of Alicante.

San Juan Beach is a true paradise of fine sand and transparent waters. It stretches from the beaches of El Campello to Cabo de las Huertas.

Cabo de las Huertas is located between San Juan Beach and Albufereta. It is an area of coves with transparent waters and rocky bottoms.

For those who want to go further, about 15 km from Alicante, in the heart of the Costa Blanca, is “ El Campello ”, a municipality with 23 km of coastline; beautiful beaches and wonderful coves; fabulous cliffs, such as that of Coveta Fuma .

What cruise passengers say:

I: Very nice, free shuttle, but you can also walk. You can walk to the Castle of Santa Barbara, which has a stunning view, but it is a nice climb, or take the bus for 1.50 euros. The seafront is nice, the historic center with some churches.

T: We visited it independently. We took a minibus up to the Castle and then walked back to see the famous mushroom street (via San Francesco, if I’m not mistaken), very characteristic.

S: In front of the ship there is a free bus that stops a stone’s throw away from the beach. Then we took a taxi for only 5 euros to the Castle of Santa Barbara, for me it is a very steep climb and I could not have done it on foot! After that we went for a nice walk, there are several squares with a lot of green and many churches. Finally we went to the mythical mushroom road, via San Francisco.

Alicante Cruises Port Guide

On a Western Mediterranean cruise , few ports of call embody the au natural, beachy goodness the way Alicante, Spain does. Like most Spanish cities, Alicante comes alive at night after 9pm, when lively tapas bars fill up with locals and beach bars blare music you can really dance to. When you cruise Alicante, share a bottle of wine among friends, eat delicious paella, and explore the city’s signature sights like the Castillo de Santa Barbara or shop at the enduring Mercado Central.

Arts and culture have their place in Alicante, too, whether you decide to immerse yourself in contemporary Spanish art at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante or uncover interactive archaeological wonders at Museo Arqueológico de Alicante. Stroll down the Explanada de España before venturing out via tram to some of the further away beaches. The sand here is deep gold and deeply Mediterranean, and snorkeling and swimming at Playa de San Juan or a quick boat ride to the islet of Tabarca promise clear waters you won’t soon forget. On a cruise, Alicante offers the excitement of Spain’s larger cities without the city congestion for a much-needed combination of sun and sea.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to alicante, castle of santa barbara.

Head to the top of Mount Benacantil, the mountain that overlooks Alicante, and you’ll find a centuries-old fortress called the Castle of Santa Barbara. Once you get to the castle, reward yourself with a coffee or ice cream. There’s a restaurant at the castillo, plus lovely views of the Mediterranean.

Basilica of Santa Maria

From a cruise, Alicante may not immediately seem like a town where hundreds of years of history coincide with beautiful beaches, but you’d be wrong about that. Check out the Basilica of Santa Maria while you’re here, a Gothic church in the city center that’s over 500 years old.

Canalejas Park

Canalejas Park, one of the most popular parks in the city, is a close walk to the port when you cruise Alicante. Grab some shade from the park’s well-protected ficus trees and rest after a long afternoon of exploring Alicante, or take the kids to the small playground area nearby.

Snorkel at the Islet of Tabarca

Check out the MACA

It’s a mouthful to say, but the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante is one of the top modern art museums in the region and a must-stop for art enthusiasts of all kinds. The focus is on Spanish artists, and there are even some rare works from Dali here, too.

If there’s one thing you should take away from Pesca al Peso, it’s that this is a seafood joint and that’s their specialty. Shrimp paella, mussels, and other fish mains are menu staples. Skip the non-seafood items and choose a local catch instead.

Culture & History of the Manila Cruise Port

People have lived in this part of Spain for thousands of years, including the Romans and Moors, throughout the early days of the city. Over time, Alicante became known as a hub for trading and commerce across the Mediterranean. Situated along Spain’s Costa Blanca, Alicante has been a popular travel and beach destination for the past few decades and has recently started to make concerted efforts to attract more international tourists to the area. The primary language spoken in the area is Spanish, so it’s handy to pick up key phrases before you go.

Alicante Port Facilities & Location

The Port of Alicante is a popular cargo and commercial port, and you’ll notice a steady thrum of activity here when you cruise Alicante. The port is equipped with standard amenities like a tourism information desk, a coffee bar, souvenir shops, and free wifi.

The best way to get around Alicante is by foot. It’s a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, or you can take a free shuttle bus to the city center. Taxis are easily hailed from the cruise port, and there’s a popular tram that can take you to the area’s more popular beaches.

Shopping Near the Alicante Cruise Port

Souvenirs abound by the Alicante cruise port, especially knick knacks and beachy finds. Head into the city center for leather goods stores, clothing boutiques, and other chic spots within walking distance of the town’s major attractions.

The official currency of Spain is the euro, and you’ll find ATMs throughout Alicante. Most spots in town accept debit and credit cards, too. Tipping in Alicante is optional and not required in most places, but when taking a taxi ride, it’s polite to round up to the next euro. The Port has gone through a multimillion-euro investment by the Port Authority that has significantly enhanced the port and the surrounding area, integrating it into the wider waterfront and city. As part of the concession agreement, Global Ports Holding plans to invest up to Euro 2m into refurbishing and modernizing the cruise terminal.

Alicante is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the east coast of Spain and is situated in the center of the Costa Blanca. Part of the appeal of this lovely harbor city, located at the foot of the Castle of Santa Barbara, a silent witness to the numerous civilizations that have settled here, is its rich culture and the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Alicante (Spain) embraces cruise tourism amid Valencia's tightened regulations

CruiseMapper logo

Alicante (Spain) has positioned itself as a welcoming destination for cruise ships and tourists, distinguishing itself from Valencia , which implemented stricter tourism regulations. Mayor Luis Barcala emphasizes Alicante's significant potential for tourism growth and assures there will be no restrictions on tourism licenses or mega-cruise arrivals, in contrast to the measures introduced by Valencia's Mayor Maria Jose Catala.

Mayor Barcala highlighted Alicante's capacity for expanding its tourism sector, supported by data indicating substantial growth potential. He underscored tourism's essential role in driving the city's economic prosperity and creating and supporting local jobs.

While Valencia is imposing restrictions on tourist apartment licenses and limiting mega-cruise arrivals, Alicante continues to embrace its current tourism policies. Barcala's approach reflects the city's commitment to fostering a thriving tourism industry, which is crucial for the economic health of Alicante and its surrounding region.

Alicante's welcoming stance extends to cruise ships unable to dock in other ports, reinforcing its dedication to maintaining a robust tourism ecosystem. With significant economic and employment benefits at stake, Alicante remains committed to being an attractive destination for cruise tourism and all travelers.

St John’s Antigua Cruise Port: Everything you need to know

M y name is Sara and I’ve spent the last 3 winters living in Antigua with my family.  We come each year as my boyfriend is a yacht captain and the boat he works on is based in Antigua.  We’ve joined in with the local community, especially as our sons go to school on the island.

I’ve also worked on cruise ships as  I used to manage the spa outlets on all of the P&O and Cunard cruise ships.  So I know how exciting a port day can be!

I’ve gathered my insider tips and knowledge for a day in Antigua.

Where is St John’s Cruise Port Antigua Located?

The cruise port is located in Deepwater Harbour which is in St John’s.  St John’s is the capital of Antigua.  It’s right in the town and you can walk there very easily.

How to Get to the City of St John’s from the Cruise Port

It’s very easy to walk to St John’s from the cruise port as the ships dock in the town itself.  Once you disembark the cruise ship and leave the terminal you are in the town.  You’ll be by Heritage Quay which is the main shopping area.

Are there Free Shuttles from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

There are no free shuttles as there is no need for them as you can walk there.

Can you walk into St John’s from your cruise ship?

Yes, as the town is at the end of the cruise ship terminal.  You will walk to St John’s to be able to take any tours or taxis to leave the cruise port.

Are there taxis available from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

Yes, there are a lot of taxis in St John’s Antigua that will be waiting to take you to explore the island.  You’ll find them generally on Heritage Quay which is at the end of the ship dock.

✅ You should confirm the price of your taxi before you leave St John’s.  Also, depending on where you go, you might want to ask the taxi to wait.

There is no Uber on the island and getting a taxi outside of the main tourist attractions can be tricky.  Most people tend to book their drive for the day and ask them to wait as they visit different locations on the island.

Best Shore Excursions From St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

There are three ways to explore Antigua.

  • You can hire a taxi for the day following your own itinerary and their recommendations.
  • Rent a car and drive yourself.  This will give you a lot more flexibility and will be better value than hiring a taxi all day.
  • Take a shore excursion and there are plenty to choose from.

I’ve selected some of the cool places and activities to do in Antigua and listed them below.

Things to do in Antigua

Walking tour of st john’s.

This is ideal if you want a more relaxed port day and don’t want to travel too far.  St John’s is small, however, there’s enough to see and do to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

If you’re keen on the history of the town then you can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, walk to the Cathedral, and then take in Old Recreation which is the old cricket ground.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, there is Heritage Quay for jewelry and tax-free shopping.  Or Redcliffe Quay for more local clothing and art.  You’ll also find in both quays a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy and people-watch from.

⭐️ Check Prices and Availability Here

Take a Cooking Class

If you’re into the tastes of the Caribbean, then why not take a cooking class? Nicole’s Table is the best in Antigua and she offers a variety of different classes.  She covers cooking with jerk flavors, making local curries, and dishes from the sea, and cooking with rum.

⭐️ I’ve tried her jerk class and it was super tasty! Check availability here!

Visit Stingray City

This is one of my must-do things in Antigua – swimming and feeding the stingrays .

Antigua is one of the only places in the world where you can swim and interact with stingrays.  ( You can visit them in Grand Cayman too !) Whenever friends and family come to visit it’s the number one experience that I encourage them to try.

During the tour, you are taken out to a remote pontoon on the edge of a reef where the stingrays congregate for feeding.  Your guides will help you into the water and encourage you to snorkel around them.

You’ll also have an opportunity to feed them and to carefully hold one in the water.  They also have a professional photographer at hand to capture the moment for you. so you’ll get a great photo of you with a stingray!

⭐️ Book Early, Check Availability Now

Snorkeling or Scuba Diving Tour

Antigua is a fantastic place to visit if you want to see turtles, rays, and much more.

If you’re a snorkeler the easiest way to get to see them from the cruise port is to take a boat tour.  Most of the good spots on the island require a boat to reach them.

There are lots of different tours to choose from.  I’d particularly recommend Eli’s Eco Tour as you get to spend a good amount of time at some great locations in the north of Antigua near the cruise port.

For those of you who scuba dive , there are several dive centers on the island to choose from that can also offer courses.

⭐️ Book Snorkeling Here or Scuba Here

Nelson’s Dockyard

If local history interests you then the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard is fantastic.  It’s a restored British naval base, and yes, it’s where Nelson was based for a time.

It’s an open-air museum so very interactive and great for all ages, plus an actual museum space as well.  Plenty of tour companies run from the cruise port to Nelson’s Dockyard, or you can drive yourself and follow the sign inside.

There’s also plenty of space to stretch your legs or let little ones run loose.  And lots to see it’s still an active marina today, you can also watch yachts and their crew come and go.  You can even walk up to the old fort and get an incredible view back over the marina.

✅ This is the top rated Historical Tour in Antigua

Rum Making Masterclass at Galleon Beach

If you’re looking for something a little different, and want to combine snorkeling at a beach, with one of the best restaurants on the island and some rum tasting then this is the day out for you.

Galleon Bay is located in the south of the island and whilst it’s got a very chilled-out vibe, it’s got a lot to keep you busy for the day.  There’s fantastic snorkelling at a couple of wrecks which are located just off of the beach and you’ve got a good chance of seeing turtles!

In the middle of the beach is Loose Cannon Bar and Restaurant , which serves some of the best beach food on the island – we eat there a lot, and so I’ve tasted most of the delicious menu.  As well as this, there’s a rum-making masterclass workshop behind the restaurant where you can blend your own rum!

A fun, and alternative way to spend a day!

⭐️ Check Availability for the Rum-Making Course

If you enjoy a bit of an adrenaline rush whilst you’re away, and are happy to fly through the air on a zipline , then this is the activity for you.  Located in a tropical rainforest , it’s not only fun but beautiful too.

They have a variety of different packages that you can choose from depending on how many zip lines you want to ride and if you want to add on the high-wire assault course at the end.

It operates in a tou r with set times so you complete the zip lines in a group.  The guides are very knowledgeable and make sure that you are comfortable so it’s suitable for total beginners and those scared of heights (like me!).  Plus they take children from 4 years old upwards so it’s fun for families too!

⭐️ Book your Zipline Tour Here

Explore A Beach Or Two

Antigua has over 365 stunning beaches to choose from , so you’ll be sure to find a beach to suit your needs.

Best for snorkeling – Galleon Beach or Lon Bay

Top for restaurant choice and activities – Dickenson Bay

Fun for families – Galleon Beach or Pigeon Point Beach

Best for off-the-beaten track – Rendezvous Bay or Half Moon Bay

One of the easiest ways to explore the beaches is on a land tour where they’ll take you a few different ones in a day.

Getting From The Airport To The Cruise Port

The closest airport to the cruise port is VC Bird International Airport which is 8.3km away.  The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi.  There is public transport, however, it’s not direct and so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Places To Stay Near St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

Antigua is renowned for it’s amazing all-inclusive resorts, so you’ll find lots of them to choose from, ones that are adults only, some that suit families, and even ones that cater to nudists.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near St John’s, then these three are three places come highly recommended:

Royalton Antigua – just 4km from the cruise port, this family-friendly all-inclusive resort is extra special as they have wonderful sea villas that you can choose from and butler service.

Sandals Antigua – only 5km from the cruise port, this adult-only resort on the beach on Dickenson Bay, right in the middle of the action.  I’ve recently had friends who stayed there and said that they would highly recommend it.

Blue Waters Resort – slightly further away than the other two at 8.5km, this family-friendly luxury all-inclusive resort to the north of St John’s is well worth a visit.  We’ve been there ourselves on day passes to use the facilities and it’s a brilliant resort.  It’s got some great sailing equipment, a few different pools to choose from, and delicious food.

Antigua Quick Facts

  • English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda.  They also speak Antiguan Creole which is an English-based Creole language spoken widely in the Leeward Islands which includes Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and Montserrat.
  • The currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) more locally called “EC”.  You’ll find that most things will be priced in EC, and higher-priced items such as tours and accommodation will also be advertised in US dollars.

Antigua is a popular country on the Caribbean cruising routes, and you’ll find up to 5 ships in the cruise port at any one time.

The benefit of this is that there are lots of different tours that you can take from St John’s, and many taxi drivers are ready to haggle for a day price to drive you around the island.

If you’re not looking to travel far, then you can relax in St John’s as the cruise port is conveniently located on the edge of the town.   You can easily walk to the town to take in some Antiguan history, shopping, and tasty food and drinks.

If beaches are more your thing, then the nearest is about an hour’s walk from the cruise port at St James Fort.  However, there are plenty of tour operators happy to take you to explore the other beaches.

Galveston cruise port: A guide to cruising from Texas

Melinda Crow

The Port of Galveston is the fourth-most-popular cruise home port in the U.S., having hosted 1.49 million cruise passengers in 2023.

While that's still a small number compared to the Florida ports ( Miami , Port Canaveral near Orlando and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades ), the Port of Galveston continues to grow. The ships are getting bigger, cruise lines are expanding the itineraries they offer from Galveston and, in 2025, MSC Cruises will begin homeporting in Galveston with the introduction of year-round sailings on MSC Seascape . The total number of ship calls on the port's 2024 calendar is 388.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most cruises from Galveston visit the Western Caribbean destinations of Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Belize; Jamaica; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. However, you can find other options; for example, Carnival Cruise Line offers longer sailings (up to 14 nights) that include Eastern and Southern Caribbean ports.

Galveston itself is a beach destination worth spending time in either pre- or post-cruise, with a variety of hotel choices ranging from economy to luxury to historic. Families can find plenty to enjoy, and adults can enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife.

The port of Galveston is on a coastal barrier island south of the city of Houston. The main highway into Galveston is Interstate Highway 45. It is possible to arrive from the east using the Port Bolivar car ferry, but the potential for ferry delays often outweighs the extra driving time it takes to go around the bay to reach the I-45 bridge.

Car rentals between IAH or HOU and Galveston

Currently, only Enterprise offers rental drop-offs in Galveston. With one-way fees and fuel, a midsize car or SUV could cost $200 for an overnight rental. This option gains value if your travel group has plans for exploring a bit pre- or post-cruise. You'll still need transportation from the Enterprise facility to the port, a distance of roughly 3 1/2 miles.

Cruise line airport transfers

You can travel from either Houston airport to the Port of Galveston on embarkation day via transfers prepurchased from the cruise lines. These are usually offered to passengers who buy air through the cruise line, but even those who book independently can call to make the purchase.

Carnival has instructions online for booking transfers from Houston airports, including flight timing restrictions. The cost is currently $58.99 per person from IAH and $41.99 per person from HOU. Return transfers would be similarly priced.

Independent airport shuttles from Houston airports to the cruise port

Local companies operate shuttle services between both Houston airports and Galveston, either to the cruise port or to a Galveston hotel. Galveston Express has shared van rides starting at $40 per person each way.

Independent van/car services

Multiple companies offer private car service from the airports to either the pier or a Galveston hotel. SuperShuttle offers private car service to the port starting at $80 per person. Blacklane offers chauffeured car service, averaging around $200 from either airport to the port, for up to three people and two bags. A larger Mercedes van for up to five passengers will cost around $250.

Hotel shuttles

Roughly half of the hotels located in Galveston offer free shuttles to the cruise pier. Hotels outside of Galveston rarely provide shuttles to the port.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Getting from a Galveston hotel to the port via ride-hailing service, such as Uber or Lyft , is possible, but not always your best choice. Galveston is a relatively small island and when two or more ships are departing on the same day, extended wait times for pickups at your hotel can cause delays and surge pricing can make the trip more expensive than you anticipated.

Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at both Houston airports. Taxis are metered, with fares averaging $165 from IAH. For ride-hailing services, follow signs and use your apps for directions to pickup points. We checked a prebooked Uber from IAH and were shown a starting fare of $98.

Public transportation

Galveston does not offer public transportation to the cruise port. The Galveston Island Trolley has bus and rail lines that are ideal for traveling between pre- or post-cruise hotels and on-island attractions, but it stops short of the port.

Port of Galveston parking

alicante cruise terminal to beach

Galveston cruise passengers often drive to the port, so parking options abound. These include both official Port of Galveston parking and private lots. For guests not staying in a Galveston hotel, private parking lots are the cheapest option. If your plan includes a hotel stay and your hotel offers a parking package, it is almost guaranteed to be at a lower price than the lots closer to the port. Reservations made well in advance are recommended for all parking options.

On-site parking

Parking for terminals 25 and 28 is a bit spread out. Some lots have shuttle service, others are walking access only. The walk can be as far as two blocks. You can choose from covered and uncovered options, with prices ranging from $22 to $26.

Parking at the newer Royal Caribbean Terminal 10 includes shuttle services for all lots. All parking at Terminal 10 is uncovered. The price per day is $22 to $25.

Private parking facilities

Private parking options near the terminals include indoor and covered parking, all with shuttles. Some service only terminals 25 and 28, while others will also service Terminal 10. If the reservation form doesn't list your cruise ship or sailing date, it means that lot doesn't serve the terminal you need.

Prices are competitive and usually lower than official port parking. For example, Lighthouse Parking beats the terminal's official parking lots, offering covered parking for around $20 per day, with shuttle service to all terminals.

Some, like Galveston Park N Cruise, offer discounts for prepaying. That lot only serves terminals 25 and 28 (Carnival and Princess) and does not provide a shuttle because it's across the street from the terminal. Prepaid rates for indoor parking are as low as $18.50 per day for a seven-night cruise.

Park-and-cruise

If you plan an overnight stay in Galveston, the cheapest parking option is a hotel with a parking package. Many Galveston hotels offer cruise parking to guests who stay either before or after a cruise. Some offer parking free of charge; most charge a fee for leaving your car behind. The best scenario is a hotel with both a parking option and a shuttle to the port.

Hotels near the Galveston cruise port

alicante cruise terminal to beach

Hotels are abundant in Galveston, all of them 10 miles or less from the port. Because this is both a small port town and a vacation destination, rates and room availability fluctuate widely. Whether you need a one-night stay as close as possible to the port or are looking for a longer stay to fully explore this charming beach town, here are some of the many choices to consider.

Hilton hotels near the Port of Galveston

For a quick overnight before your cruise, the DoubleTree is a good choice (32,000 to 168,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It has a pool and free Wi-Fi and is across the street from the beach. It also offers parking package options.

For a more resort-style stay, consider the Hilton Galveston Island Resort (32,000 to 338,000 Hilton Honors points per night). It's within walking distance of the beach and offers parking and shuttle packages.

Marriott hotels near the Port of Galveston

For an affordable stay with beach access, check out the Courtyard Galveston Island (30,000 to 59,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). You can dine at its on-site restaurant or venture out — either by foot or via the island's trolley — to sample the island's renowned seafood. Wi-Fi is free for Bonvoy members.

The Grand Galvez, part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, is the city's signature hotel. First opened in 1911 as the Hotel Galvez, it is the only historic beachfront hotel on the entire Texas coast. A stay here (from 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) is a grand way to start a cruise vacation.

For a hotel even closer to the pier and the city's famed downtown strand, the Tremont House is a luxury option from the Tribute Portfolio (from 55,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night). Its Blum & Co. bistro and wine bar is open all day and well into the evening for those arriving from late flights into Houston. The hotel has park-and-sail packages as well as transportation to the terminal.

Hyatt hotels near the Port of Galveston

The nearest Hyatt is the Hyatt Regency Baytown, a Category 3 hotel (from 9,000 World of Hyatt points per night). It's an hour's drive from the port, situated not far from Space Center Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk, if those are on your to-do list pre- or post-cruise.

Non-points hotels near the Port of Galveston

A stay at Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center is a whopper of a family-friendly choice. Besides the aquarium, rainforest and discovery museum on-site, the property boasts a beachy water park and lazy river, and a paddlewheel boat offering dinner cruises. The hotel offers cruise parking and a cruise shuttle for a fee.

Leaving the kids behind? The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center is family-friendly, but its lack of attractions for children (other than a pool) means fewer children will likely be on the property. That makes it ideal for a couples or singles escape. The resort has ocean-view rooms and suites, four restaurants and a luxury spa to kick off (or finish off) your cruise.

Restaurants near Galveston cruise port

The food scene in Galveston includes everything from baskets of fish and chips done Texas style (which means it's probably wrapped in bacon and served with jalapenos) to elegant chop houses and seafood establishments. Choices line Seawall Boulevard and extend to the Strand Historic District and the Pier 21 tourist area.

Seafood is the predominant option, but it's also possible to sample barbecue and Tex-Mex.

Things to do in and around Galveston before or after your cruise

alicante cruise terminal to beach

The beach is the No. 1 reason people visit Galveston. It stretches for 32 miles (more than 10 miles protected by a seawall and promenade) and is dotted with fishing piers, overwater souvenir shops and the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park. The best part is that almost anything you need in Galveston is across the street from the beach, including most of the hotels and restaurants.

The bar scene along the seawall has plenty to offer, from rooftop outdoor seating at Pelican and the Shark at the 61st Street Fishing Pier to the famous Poop Deck facing the beach. The Strand has its own concentration of bars, from classy wine bars to genuine dive bars.

Beyond the beach, look for a Texas original water park — Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens. Kids and adults both can delight in the three Moody Gardens pyramids. One's an aquarium featuring penguins, seals and a coral reef lab. Another is a rainforest, home to over 1,700 exotic plants and endangered animals, including free-roaming sloths and birds that fly between the trees as you walk the trails below the canopy. The third pyramid is a discovery museum with rotating exhibits. Expect animal encounters and hands-on "edutainment" at all three.

Shopping near the Port of Galveston

For last-minute cruise clothes, swing by the Tanger Outlets on I-45, approximately 20 miles north of Galveston in Texas City. As luck would have it, there's a Buc-ees right next door. Besides the clean bathrooms, you'll find Texas souvenirs, out-of-the-ordinary snacks, drinks and even decent barbecue packed into a supersize gas station and roadside palooza.

You won't have trouble finding Galveston's Walmart and Target if you're looking to purchase last-minute snacks, sundries, bottled water, soda or wine to carry on board ( where allowed ).

Hot spots for beachwear, hats, sunglasses and souvenirs specific to Galveston are Dolphin World and the Mermaid Pier.
