The  Ten Thousand Island National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Southside of Highway 41, approximately 20 miles southeast of Naples-FL , just between Marco Island and Everglades City, Florida. Ten Thousand Islands is also a great alternative as one of the best day trips from Miami .

The West boundary lies along county road 92. The Gulf of Mexico borders the southern boundary, and the eastern boundary lies just west of Everglades National Park, and FAKA Union Canal in the northern portion of that boundary.

Get To Know More About The Ten Thousand Islands, FL

You may be surprised to learn that despite its name, Ten Thousand Islands in Florida is actually home to hundreds of islands, not thousands . But don’t let that fool you, because what these islands lack in quantity, they more than make up for in quality.

Established in 1996, this 35,000-hectare refuge is a haven for wildlife, from vibrant marine species to a stunning array of plants. It’s no wonder that Ten Thousand Islands is considered one of Florida’s best-kept secrets , with its pristine beauty and diverse range of habitats.

Two-thirds of the refuge is made up of mangrove forests , fresh and saltwater marshes, brackish lagoons, winding channels, sandy beaches, and shallow bays that dominate the numerous islands. From the tiniest islands, barely the size of a basketball court, to larger islands that rival the size of a soccer field, each one is a unique and captivating ecosystem.

And that’s not all – Ten Thousand Islands is also home to a rich diversity of native wildlife, including several endangered species. With its protected habitats and flourishing wildlife, this is a destination that’s perfect for anyone looking for an authentic Florida experience.

The second largest mangrove forest in the world is Ten Thousand Islands

The rich history of Ten Thousand Islands dates back over 3,500 years when Native Americans first settled in this beautiful region. The abundance of seafood was the main draw, and the tribes dug canals, built islands from discarded shells, and used the area as a refuge.

In the late 19th century, European settlers began to occupy the larger islands, and commercial fishing became the primary source of income. But as cities grew, people migrated to areas around Marco Island, Naples, and Everglades City.

Today, the islands are a protected sanctuary, and no one calls them home. This means that the area remains as pristine and untouched as it was when the first settlers arrived, as noted by the Florida Environmental Protection Service.

4. Visit the Everglades City

The city of Everglades is a charming fishing village, with great food, and long history, and it is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. You can explore the historic city of Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island by car, bicycle, or on foot, and be able to appreciate up close a legendary past such as visiting buildings from the 1920s.

Also, Everglades City is the best option for accommodation if you are looking to spend a few days exploring the Ten Thousand Islands. Here you can find shops, restaurants, motels, a marina, a museum, a very small airport, and places to rent a canoe, kayak, bicycle and also, you can take boat and airboat tours.

5. Visit the smallest Post Office in the USA

Another thing to do if you are visiting Ten Thousand Island, make sure to stop at the Smallest Post Office in the USA that is located in Ochopee . It is actually a working Post Office still. This closet-sized, 7×8-foot building used to be an irrigation pipe shed for a tomato farm. It was pressed into service after a fire destroyed the Ochopee general store, which also housed the post office in 1953.

6. Go kayaking on Ten Thousand Islands

Ten Thousand Islands offers some of the most unique places to go kayaking in Florida . From Chokoloskee Island, about three miles from the ranger station, it’s a good half-day paddle to the closest keys. Before you go, make sure to study the tides as the current can rip through the narrow mangrove channels and make progress seem nearly impossible. It’s far better to plan your trip out on an outgoing tide, even if it means leaving later than you want to.

It’s a run of approximately 99 miles from Chokoloskee to Flamingo. A powered boat can cover the distance in a day but kayakers and canoeists can take a week to cover the same distance. This journey should be attempted only by experienced boaters and paddlers with good navigational skills and the proper equipment, or you can hire a local guide .

7. Go hiking at the 10,000 Islands Marsh Trail

Located at mile marker 31 on US41 or Tamiami Trail, the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge offers visitors a chance to experience nature up close. The Marsh Trail is a mile-long pathway that runs alongside the marshes and is paved most of the way, making it an easy and flat stroll.

Along the trail, there is an observation tower that offers fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. In addition to the Marsh Trail, there are several canoe and kayak trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s waterways and observe wildlife from a different perspective.

Hiking in Ten Thousand Islands

8. Go on a camping adventure in the Ten Thousand Islands

Everglades National Park has 48 designated backcountry campsites. Campers can choose from chickees, ground sites, and beach sites. Chickees are 10- by 12-foot wooden platforms built over the water away from land, and land sites are usually only a few feet higher than the surrounding mangroves. But please, be aware of the Ten Thousand Islands NWR rules and regulations .

Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge offers a unique camping experience for those who want to explore the area up close. From October to April, campers can stay overnight with “ Leave No Trace ” ethics. Beach sites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and reservations are not required. However, it’s essential to know the rules and regulations of the refuge.

The refuge has some restrictions that you need to be aware of. Camping on the beaches of Panther Key, Camp Key, Hog Key, and Bee Key is not permitted from May 1 to September 30 due to the nesting of sea turtles and shorebirds. These animals’ safe emergence is important, and human interference such as campfires, tents, and boats can be disruptive. So, make sure to respect the local wildlife and enjoy your camping experience!

Camping in Ten Thousand Islands Florida USA

How to go Camping in Ten Thousand Islands, Florida

If you are planning to visit the Ten Thousand Islands, and want to go camping, remember that camping on the uninhabited islands has its challenges, which is part of the appeal.

Be aware that once you leave the safety of the launch, you’ll be on your own responsibility. You must bring everything you will need, including food, water, fuel, and medical supplies. Bring some extra, in case you run into bad weather and must stay put.

Camping in the Everglades or at the Ten Thousand Islands NWR requires you to prepare well in advance , and I recommend using eco-friendly camping gear to help to protect the environment.

With no water on the islands, raccoons have been known to chew through plastic just to get a drink, so pack all perishables in the hatch of your boat or kayak. And keep in mind that cell phones and VHF radios don’t work out here in the bush.

As you head southeast along the coast, you’ll find the best spots to pitch a tent on the open water, or windward, sides of the islands, which tend to have the best beaches and, more often than not, fewer bugs.

14 thoughts on “ten thousand islands, florida: a travel planner’s expert guide”.

I’ve spent many days paddling and overnight camping in the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands are some of my favorite cays to camp on. I’ve fought off many a raccoon there to save my food. But to see all the birds, dolphins and alligators makes it all worthwhile.

That is such an amazing in-depth guide to the Ten Thousands Islands. A few years ago, I did a boat tour around the islands but unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to explore the more remote areas. After reading your post, I have to come back again! 🙂

I would love to see the manatees! Looks like a really great place for wildlife. The city looks interesting as well! Thanks for this great guide.

Wow, how cool! We’re Florida bound this winter, adding this to the list. Thanks!

im literally crying right now, coz i was meant to be visiting this July!! It looks soooo awesome, im saving this for when we are allowed to enter the US!

Oh Tia, I am so sorry about you to have to postpone your trip to the US. This is really a challenging year, but hopefully in 2021 things will get back to normal and you will have an awesome time. If you come to Florida, please let me know and I would love to meet you.

Awesome Cindy, I hope you get to visit the Ten Thousand Islands and I hope you love it too. During wintertime will be even better, because the weather will be cooler to do plenty of outdoor adventures.

Katy, the manatees are just so incredible and peaceful and yes, the wildlife is so rich and diverse.

I am so glad to hear you enjoyed this guide. And how awesome you did a tour in the islands before, it is such a unique and wild area, I hope you get the chance to go back.

How awesome Karen you spend days paddling this area, it must be amazing and full of adventures. I didn’t have the chance because I visited during summer, it was over 100 degrees and I had my 2 little dogs with me, but I still want to go back to spend a few days paddling and exploring the islands.

I had no idea this was in Florida! Definitely going to check it out when I visit again.

Wow this looks incredible! I have actually never heard of Ten Thousand Islands but now I want to visit! Your wildlife photos are incredible!

Thank you so much Bettina, I am so happy to hear you enjoyed the photos.

Hi Krista – I have been living in Florida for 14 years and I just learned not long ago about Ten Thousand Islands. Such a unique and gorgeous place!

5 ways to explore Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands

By: Author Bob Rountree and Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: February 14, 2024

Vast and remote, the Ten Thousand Islands off Florida’s southwest coast seems challenging to visit, a labyrinth of twisting channels through thousands of remote mangrove islands.

Anchored off the beach at Panther Key in the Ten Thousand Islands

1. PADDLE TO SANDFLY ISLAND . The Sandfly Loop kayak trail is about five miles, out and back from the Visitor Center, a two to three hour paddle. Add an hour to explore Sandfly, where you can picnic, use the portable toilet, and walk a mile-long trail past vestiges of pioneer homes. The dock is in disrepair, so pull your kayak up on the beach next to the dock. Extend your paddle by exploring nearby passes, bays and islands, but keep your bearings. Use the portable toilet near the dock as a landmark in case you get turned around. It’s easy to get confused (and lost!)

Canoe or kayak rentals are available from two local companies that deliver kayaks to the launch area at the Gulf Coast visitor center: Everglades Adventure Tours and Ivey House .

Detailed Florida Rambler article:   Sandfly Island is perfect ‘intro’ kayak trail to explore Ten Thousand Islands

2. RIDE THE TIDE TO INDIAN KEY . Slightly more advanced, this 15-mile out-and-back paddle takes you out to the Gulf of Mexico through the main channel (Barron River/Indian Key Pass) from Everglades City. This is the same channel the park service tour boat follows. Best time to start your journey is a few hours after the high tide at Everglades City and ride the tide all the way to Indian Key, where the channel empties into the Gulf. Take a swim and have a picnic until the tide turns, then ride it back. If you don’t time this trip with the tides, you will struggle against strong currents. (Do not confuse this Indian Key with Indian Key in the Florida Keys).

Fishing at Indian Key

Detailed Florida Rambler article:   Ride the Tide through Indian Key Pass in the Ten Thousand Islands

3. PLAN AN OVERNIGHT KAYAK TRIP  to an outer island for a brilliant night sky from your own private beach. We like Tiger Key and Picnic Key, just north of Indian Key Pass, the main channel out of Everglades City.

night camping ten thousand islands tiger key

Picnic Key’s beach sites are on the windward side of the island with little protection from sudden storms, while Tiger Key has a sheltered crescent-shaped beach on the leeward side facing West Pass.

Sites on both islands are limited and must be reserved at the Visitor Center no more than 24 hours in advance. (Weekdays are easiest to book). It’s a nine-mile paddle, about four hours, each way. You can avoid the camping restrictions by paddling a little further north to Panther Key, which is outside Everglades National Park in the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Detailed Florida Rambler article:   Beach camping in the wild Ten Thousand Islands

chickee camping on the wilderness waterway in the Ten Thousand Islands

4. WILDERNESS WATERWAY. The 99-mile Wilderness Waterway is the premier Ten Thousand Island adventure, a week-long paddle from Everglades City to Cape Sable and Flamingo (or vice versa). You will spend your nights on raised platforms (chickees), hard ground islands and beaches. Not for amateurs or the feint of heart, this journey will test your skills. Motorboats are allowed in these waters, but all watercraft, motor or paddle, must carefully navigate varying depths, some too shallow at low tide and others even shallow at high tide. Select your gear carefully, but bring a tarp or pop-up tent, and understand that you may be sharing a cozy chickee platform with strangers. Don’t even think about taking this trip without up-to-date NOAA navigation charts and studying the park service’s  Wilderness Trip Planner .

It’s easy to get lost in these islands, so closely watch channel markers (bring charts), and note landmarks, understanding that all of these islands look the same after awhile. You will deja vu over and over and over again. I’ve found that a handheld GPS that tracks your path can be very handy if you need to backtrack to a known location.

Be sure to use tide tables to plan any paddle trip in these islands. The currents can be tough to navigate against the tide. Ideally, you should paddle out on the falling tide and return on a rising tide, using the tide tables for the Barron River at Everglades City as your point of reference. Note that tidal flows seem counterintuitive once you get into backcountry channels.

You can rent single or double kayaks or canoes from the concession at the visitor center, including for use on the Wilderness Waterway. A shuttle service from Flamingo is also available.

5. THE EASIEST WAY  to see the Ten Thousand Islands is a narrated boat tour based at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center of Everglades National Park in Everglades City. The two hour tour is $54 (2024 rate) for adults. Children 5 to 16 are $36.

Until fall of 2024, the  Ten Thousand Islands boat tour  is launching from a temporary location two miles north of the Gulf Coast Visitor Center because of reconstruction of the visitor center. You should book ahead. The launch site is on DuPont Street, which you reach on the right as you are coming to town before your cross the bridge into Everglades City.

You’ll learn about the islands’ unique environment and will often see dolphins play in the tour boat’s wake. You will undoubtedly see a variety of bird species, including soaring bald eagles, hawks, nesting osprey and colorful roseate spoonbills. The guides are naturalists trained by national park staff and the boat has a quiet engine to reduce scaring away wildlife.

The 2024 tour includes a stop at a boardwalk with a 15 minute walk.

Gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands

everglades city barron river

Explore historic Everglades City and Chokoloskee Island   by car, bicycle or on foot. These outposts in the Ten Thousand Islands are on U.S. 29, off the Tamiami Trail (US 41), and have a legendary past as fishing village, smuggler’s haven and hideout to more than a few notorious characters.

Today, there is far more fishing than smuggling (or so we are led to believe), with several unpretentious seafood restaurants that feature the local catch, most notably the delectable stone crab in season. Consider  Triad Seafood , 401 School Drive West, or City Seafood , 702 Begonia St.

Visit iconic buildings from the 1920s: Old Collier County Courthouse, Bank of Everglades Building and the legendary Rod and Gun Club, which has hosted Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Nixon, as well as Ernest Hemingway.

On Chokoloskee Island, visit historic Smallwood Store , which opened in 1906 when this was the Wild West and Ted Smallwood was a pioneer. The former Indian trading post on stilts overlooking Chokoluskee Bay served a small community of hardy and often ornery individualists. Today, the store is a museum, still owned by descendants of the founder. Admission is $5.

Other ports of entry to the Ten Thousand Islands

Port of the Islands — Accessible from Tamiami Trail north of Everglades City, Port of the Islands is a cluster of condos, adventure resort and marina complex with an RV park and boat ramps with excellent access to the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. This may be the best choice for those who want to bring motorboats into the islands for a week or a weekend of fishing. Not the best choice for paddlers because of the long, time-consuming journey down the Faka Union Canal. On the positive side, the channel takes you straight to Panther Key with its great beach camping (no permits) and nearby fishing (fishing license required).

Collier-Seminole State Park — This state park is a jewel with an excellent boat launch for kayaks, canoes, and motorboats (up to 24 feet) with access to the Blackwater River, which dumps into Blackwater Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands. There is also a paddle trail that branches off the Blackwater into the depths of the park.

Goodland/Marco Island — Just off the southeast access bridge on Marco Island (State Road 92), Goodland is a rustic little fishing village with a couple of interesting restaurants and quite a few characters. A modern marina with boat ramp, as well as several access points for canoes and kayaks, make Goodland a good alternative to access the northern tier of the Ten Thousand Islands.

10,000 Island Boat Tour on Chokoloskee Bay in Everglades National Park

10,000 Island Boat Tour on Chokoloskee Bay in Everglades National Park

Close

The 10,000 Islands Boat Tour leaves from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center at Everglades National Park and runs year-round. This tour lasts two hours and takes you six miles out to the Gulf of Mexico through the islands in Chokoloskee Bay. See the Everglades National Park Adventures website for the current tour price, schedule, and to make reservations.

The tour’s biggest draw is the chance to see dolphins. In fact, you might as well call it a “dolphin spotting tour,” because that’s what everyone on the boat wants to see, though sharks and manatees are also a thrill. On the tour I went on, we saw dolphins right out of the gate and plenty more all the way across the bay. The Florida Bay Boat Tour , which is held down in the Flamingo Area , is basically the same tour, and I saw plenty of dolphins there as well. By the time I was done, I’d seen so many dolphins that they might as well have been dogs. You get to the point where you don’t even want to bother standing up to see them. The guide did tell me that if it has been stormy, the dolphins are harder to find, so book your tour during a spell of nice weather if possible.

Bird watchers will also delight at the vast array of species that can be seen in the bay—pelicans, herons, osprey, bald eagles, cormorants. I saw my first bald eagle on this trip.

The islands are called the 10,000 Islands (there’s actually about 5,000 more), and half the reason for such a large number is because some aren’t any bigger than a few yards across. It is interesting to see islands that are nothing more than one mangrove tree growing in the middle of the water.

Three of the 10,000 Islands in Chokoloskee Bay, Everglades National Park

Three of the 10,000 Islands in Chokoloskee Bay, Everglades National Park

If you have already done the Florida Bay Tour and saw enough dolphins to be content, then there is no reason to do both tours unless you have time and money to spare, or simply love dolphins. Likewise, if you paddled out to the islands in Chokoloskee Bay and were fortunate enough to see dolphins and manatees up close and are happy with that, no need to spend time here. Seeing dolphins and other wildlife is definitely the main attraction of the 10,000 Islands Boat Tour.

See the Gulf Coast Area Wildlife Photos web page for a complete gallery of all animals I saw while in the Gulf Coast Area.

A Comparison of Ten Thousand Islands Shelling Tours

Accessible only by boat, the Ten Thousand Islands chain off the coast of southwest Florida make for a magical shelling adventure.

(Photo: Haydn Blackey via Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0)

The deserted stretches of sand in the Ten Thousand Islands provide rich pickings for shelling enthusiasts, who come to these idyllic islands and mangrove islets in their droves in search of seashells. If you’re coming to this part of Florida and would like to join a shelling expedition during your visit, there are a wide number of organised tours available. We’ve compared three of them below.

4-Hour Shelling Tour

Florida Master Naturalist, local guide and Master Captain, Jason Fullerton, has a lifetime of experience in the coastal areas of Southwest Florida, with his passion and knowledge for nature and wildlife ensuring a fun and fulfilling day on the water. Among their most popular excursions is their small-group shared shelling tour, during which you and your group get to explore some of the most abundant areas for beachcombing anywhere on Florida’s coast. These 4-hour trips always take place on the lowest tides and hit the most productive spots, ensuring you come away with a variety of seashells. From $110 per person.

Accompanied by a certified naturalist guide, you’ll tour the Everglades area including Marco Island, enjoying the comfort of the captain’s style seating on your vessel as you travel deep into the area’s 10,000 islands. Find big shells on Marco Island shelling boat tours

So many shells…

You can find hundreds of species of shells on the beaches here. Giant shells like lightning whelks and Florida horse conchs are found here, which can measure anywhere from 12 to 24 inches or more in length! Tiny shells such as a baby’s ears, Wentletraps, or keyhole limpets and found too. Delicate shells like sand dollars, angel wings, or flat zigzag scallops are a real treasure. Every day of shelling is genuinely a surprise, as you never know what will wash ashore.

Why are there so many shells on Marco Island?

Marco Island's best shelling boat tours

Tides and currents in the 10,000 Islands

Another reason there are so many shells is because of the currents. A strong southerly current flows down the Gulf Coast towards Marco Island, bringing shells from as far away as the Panhandle of Florida. However, cross-current also comes from the deeper Gulf near Cape Romano. This is why we find so many rare shells around Marco Island, as the Gulf currents bring in deep water species such as the coveted Junonia.

happy family on their Marco Island private Shelling boat tour

” In April 2022 our family booked an early morning shelling tour with Captain Nate. He was great, took time to provide a history of the islands and was very knowledgeable about everything. We had a 7:30am early morning private shelling tour. We were the only people on the island and were able to collect more shells than we ever imagined. We even were lucky enough to find the Junonia shell!!! A terrific experience which included a family of dolphins trailing the boat and having fun riding the waves behind us. Would highly recommend. I though the price was high upon booking, but after the experience I would state that it was worth every penny as an investment to create a great family memory. Highly recommend Florida Island Tours! 2024 U.S. Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions from proven PGA golf model that hit 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the u.s. open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

10 000 island tours

Scottie Scheffler will try to win his second major of the year when he tees off at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club Course No. 2. Play will get underway on Thursday, June 13. Scheffler has been on a tear in 2024, winning four of his last seven starts on the PGA Tour, which included his second green jacket at the Masters. He's also secured two T-2 finishes during that span and his worst finish since February is a T-10 showing at the Genesis Invitational. The No. 1 ranked player in the world is the 4-1 favorite according to the latest 2024 U.S, Open odds.

Scheffler is followed by fellow major champions like Rory McIlroy (9-1), Xander Schauffele (10-1), Brooks Koepka (12-1) and Jon Rahm (12-1) on the PGA odds board. Before locking in any 2024 U.S. Open picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing U.S. Open props and U.S. Open Pick 6 or PrizePicks entries, be sure to see the 2024 U.S. Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now with the U.S. Open 2024 approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 U.S. Open: Brooks Koepka (12-1), a two-time U.S. Open champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top 10. Koepka has five major championships overall but he hasn't been much of a factor in major tournaments since that last victory at the 2023 PGA Championship. In his four majors since then, his best finish is tying for 17th at last year's U.S. Open. Koepka has finished outside the top 25 in each of his last three major starts, which is one shy of tying a career-long drought.

He's finished outside the top 15 in four straight appearances at majors and has struggled overall this season. Over his last eight tournament starts, he has twice as many finishes outside the top 25 (four) as he has inside the top 10 (two). Add in that he shot over par in his lone previous start at Pinehurst No. 2, and there are much better values to utilize U.S. Open 2024 bets on.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his long odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas has been playing exceptional golf in recent weeks. He secured a T-5 finish at the RBC Heritage and finished T-8 at the PGA Championship.

Thomas is a two-time major champion and enters the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst ranked seventh in birdie average (4.43), seventh in strokes gained: approach to green (0.697) and 13th in strokes gained: total (0.952). His recent form, plus his long odds, make Thomas a valuable longshot to include in your U.S. Open bets, according to the model.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Cyndi Lauper Announces Massive Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour — See the Dates!

The tour announcement comes shortly before a documentary on Lauper's life and career, 'Let the Canary Sing,' will be released to Paramount+ on June 4

Ebet Roberts/Redferns

  • Cyndi Lauper has announced a new tour
  • The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour is a 23-date string of arena concerts in celebration of her decades-long career
  • The tour will kick off in October 2024 and continue through December 2024

Cyndi Lauper is nearing the end of her touring career — but not before one more big run of shows.

On Monday, June 3, the Grammy winner, 70, announced her massive upcoming Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, a 23-date string of arena concerts in celebration of her decades-long career. Special guests for the trek will be revealed at a later date.

Lauper's first major headlining tour since 2013, the run kicks off Friday, Oct. 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal and makes stops in cities including Toronto, Detroit, Boston, New York City, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and more before wrapping Thursday, Dec. 5 at the United Center in Chicago.

Live Nation

Tickets first become available through an artist presale on Tuesday, June 4, with additional presales running throughout the week before the general onsale launches on Friday, June 7 at 10 a.m. local time. More information can be found at Live Nation's website , while VIP packages are also available through VIP Nation .

Lauper previously teased the idea of a farewell tour in an October 2022 interview with PEOPLE. "I might go out on tour one more time — big time — and maybe be the headliner," she said at the time.

Over the past decade, the "True Colors" performer has opened for artists including Rod Stewart ,  Cher  and Blondie. "I've had the privilege of working with a lot of wonderful people, but I gotta see," added Lauper, who noted she'd "like to" tour in celebration of her debut album, She's So Unusual , marking its 40th anniversary in 2023.

Ruven Afanador

The tour announcement comes shortly before Let the Canary Sing , a new documentary about Lauper's life and career, is released on Paramount+ on June 4.

At the film's Tribeca Festival premiere last year, she opened up to PEOPLE about the inspiration behind her signature hit, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," originally recorded by Robert Hazard.

"I was trying really hard to make an anthem that would inspire women and open the doors to all women," said Lauper in June 2023. "Not just one group of women, but every little girl could see herself and realize that she too could have a joyful experience in life."
