The Connells seemed to be something of a star-crossed band. In the 1980s they seemed poised to break out from their home base in and around North Carolina. Armed with a couple of almost hits, MTV airplay, and a willingness to tour relentlessly, they ran into bad timing as much as anything.

A few years too early for the 1990s explosion of alternative rock, a little too late to take advantage of perhaps riding REM's like-minded coattails out of the south. Even so, after decades of being dormant, the band is playing live shows again, and in concert they're as strong as ever.

The band has always had a knack for writing songs with massive melodic hooks, and their concerts bring that to the forefront. Doug MacMillan's pleasingly boyish voice hasn't aged a bit, and if anything the band sounds tighter than it ever has.

Don't go to see the band expecting to hear the gentle, sometimes rustic lilt of their records, because live the group turns things up and delivers a terrific rock show. Indeed, with the loud guitars acting as counterpoint to such sweet melodies, the band's influence on modern groups like Nada Surf jumps out.

Currently most Connells shows take place in and around their home base in North Carolina, but at recent shows they've been playing new material that sounds every bit as good as their classic songs like “Something To Say” and “Sal”. If a new record is in the offing, that could result in a more extensive tour of the country to follow.

The Motorco was a GREAT venue for The Connells! The energy was high, and the band was wonderful as usual. It was SUCH a good show!! I hope the fellas decide to play the Motorco again. Leisure McCorkle was with them as well. He was super fun to see again.

The Connells Share First New Music in 20 Years, Announce New Album 'Steadman's Wake'

Steadman’s Wake, their long awaited 9th album, was originally set for release in 2020 but was held up due to the pandemic.

pixeltracker

Today the long-standing (still standing mostly) Raleigh-based alt rock band The Connells are back after a 20 year long hiatus with the release of their new single "Really Great." The group has also announced their upcoming album Steadman's Wake, which is out on September 24 via Black Park/Missing Piece Records. The Connells have been teasing a new album for the past years, giving fans updates and occasionally playing new songs during shows and live streams. They've announced a run of summer US tour dates with tickets available this Friday.

"As it happens, 'Really Great' is one of the few songs that I've written totally in a major key," says guitarist and vocalist Mike Connell, "which makes it seem brighter than most of the bands' songs, which are in a minor key. The lyrics of the song are somewhat facetious or tongue-in-cheek, given that the situations described in the verses - 'I'm in some never ending, mind-bending turnstile' and 'I'm in some thunder-clapping, soul-sapping whirlwind' - are not 'really great,' at all, but are actually pretty dismal. This was an attempt at describing my take on what was going on in the world, between a global pandemic, and the fallout from that, as well as the political and social situation in this country. By the chorus, however, the prevailing mood or spirit of the song shifts when the singer begins to focus on the more personal and particular - going to see a friend, taking in the beauty of blue skies on a sunny day, some old favorite song rattling around in his head."

Despite the two decades since their last recording, The Connells never quit performing, and Mike Connell never stopped writing songs. Steadman's Wake features eight new songs and 3 re-recorded versions of previously-released demos which originally appeared on 2001's Old-School Dropouts CD. This is the band's first album to feature two newest members, guitarist Mike Ayers and drummer Rob Ladd (who have been in the lineup since 2002 and 2012, respectively), and the band's first record with Mike Connell taking a prominent role as vocalist.

In addition to the album announcement and new single, The Connells also surprised fans today by releasing their 1986 debut album Darker Days on streaming platforms for the very first time. The record, which has been out of print since the 90's, was released in a digital format for the first time in April when it was added to Bandcamp. Demos of the original album caught the eye of executives at Elvis Costello's Demon Records, which later released Darker Days in the UK.

The Connells first formed in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina in 1984, debuting a year later with the song "Darker Days" on the Dolphin Records More Mondo Compilation, followed by their debut album Darker Days in 1986. Their 1987 Mitch Easter-produced album Boylan Heights established them as college-radio favorites, and they went on to work with producers including Gary Smith (Pixies, Billy Bragg), Hugh Jones (Echo & the Bunnymen, Modern English) and Lou Giordano (Goo Goo Dolls, Bob Mould) on subsequent albums. Three albums by The Connells have made the Billboard 200 charts in the United States, but their biggest commercial success came overseas in 1993 with "'74- '75," a pensive and moody ballad from their Ring LP which reached the top-10 in 11 European countries in 1995 (including No. 1 in Sweden, Norway and Germany).

Steadman's Wake, their long awaited 9th album, was originally set for release in 2020 but was held up due to the pandemic, a hard delay for a band that has waited so long for this follow-up. Tickets for The Connells tour dates go on sale Friday, June 25.

The Connells | Interview | Announce New Album ‘Steadman’s Wake’

connells tour dates

Despite two decades since their last recording, The Connells never quit performing, and Mike Connell never stopped writing songs. ‘Steadman’s Wake’ features eight new songs and three re-recorded versions of previously-released demos which originally appeared on 2001’s ‘Old-School Dropouts’ CD.

The new album ‘Steadman’s Wake’ features the two newest members, guitarist Mike Ayers and drummer Rob Ladd. ‘Steadman’s Wake’ releases September 24, 2021 via Black Park/Missing Piece Records.

I’m very excited to hear your upcoming album, ‘Steadman’s Wake’. It’s your first new album in 20 years. What have you been up to?

Doug MacMillan: Basically, work, children, not touring – But playing gigs here & there.

‘Really Great’ is your first single off the new album. What inspired the song?

‘Really Great’ is a song that Mike Connell has had sitting around for years. An earlier version had a far more caustic, satirical lyric, which is an aspect of Mike’s songs that I love, but I do like the sentiment he landed on, in the end.

Can you share some further details on how your latest album was recorded? Who produced it? What was the recording experience like?

We recorded roughly half of the basic tracks with Mitch Easter at (his) Fidelitorium Recordings studio (3+ years ago?) in Kernersville, and the rest produced and mixed by John Plymale at Overdub Lane in Durham, in 2-3 day sessions. Not like the old days where we’d go to a studio for a month or so, hopefully record everything, and in some cases mix.

Would you say it’s a concept album about the times we are experiencing?

Well, any common thread or theme running through these songs (and on prior records), seems to reveal itself towards the end of the process. I can see how some of the songs can evoke some of the mood of the past couple of years.

connells tour dates

You also surprised fans by releasing your 1986 debut album ‘Darker Days’ on streaming platforms for the very first time. What do you recall from working on your debut?

Oh boy… no matter how surprised our fans were, no one was more surprised than me. Let’s just say that it’s a solid document of a singer not having found his voice – or developed his “sealegs” yet. Fortunately, the songs are good, and my bandmates had their end handled.

And how would you compare it to, let say, ‘Ring’ from 1993? How was working on that particular album?

Like night and day. We seemed to know what we were doing by then (keys, arrangements). We had been a touring band for several years when we recorded ‘Ring’, and had logged enough time in studios up til that point to feel comfortable. Definitely not the case with ‘Darker Days’.

connells tour dates

‘Steadman’s Wake’ was originally set for release in 2020 but was held up due to the pandemic. How are you coping with the current pandemic and what are your predictions for the future? Do you think the music industry will adapt to it?

‘Steadman’s Wake’ had been mixed and mastered right around the time that everyone started heading indoors. So, yeah we’ve been sitting on it for a while. That time did allow for us to sort out the things that can delay a release – artwork, photos, et cetera. I’m in no position to make any predictions in regards to the future.

“We just adapted”

Did your approach to music-making change? What’s the typical creative process for you these days?

We just adapted. If we got together to rehearse for and/or play a streaming gig, et cetera, we kept our distance, wore masks – although no mask when singing. Creative process usually involves sitting down with a guitar, or another instrument, and trying to land on something that’s worth a hoot.

How about influences? What were you listening back to at the beginning?

British Invasion, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, The Left Banke, Bob Dylan…

As a huge fan of psych rock, tell me about the inspiration behind your first song, ‘Psychedelic Butterfly’?

I thought that was the name of Mike’s very early first band? Maybe first band and song? Either way, I’m sure Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, et cetera inspired the ‘Psychedelic Butterfly’, more so than say, the song ‘Elusive Butterfly’.

Your finest moment in music?

The emergence of the ‘Psychedelic Butterfly’ is clearly the finest moment in all music.

Let’s end this interview with some of your favourite albums. Have you found something new lately you would like to recommend to our readers?

Concert tours to see this summer

Hang out in the sunshine with a variety of live shows

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

The Foo Fighters perform a concert in Washington, D.C.

After months of iffy weather across much of the globe, summer is nearly here in North America. And, lucky for its residents, many standout artists are looking to take advantage of the sunshine with some live tours.

Alanis Morissette

One of Canada's most well-known musical exports is hitting the road again. Alanis Morissette will navigate venues across the United States during her "Triple Moon Tour," which will feature 33 dates running from June to August. Morissette will not go it alone, though, as she will be accompanied on stage by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts alongside singer Morgan Wade. Morissette released her tenth LP in 2022, but the "Triple Moon Tour" will mostly be in tribute to the 25th anniversary of her fourth studio album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," which was released to critical acclaim in 1998.

While "Family Guy" may have once described him as "just some guy with a hat," singer Jason Mraz is the recipient of two Grammy Awards and remains one of the most popular guitarists and singers of the last decade. Beginning in June, Mraz will venture on his "Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride Summer 2024," with shows in more than 25 locations in the United States and Canada through August. The artist behind the hit single "I'm Yours" named his upcoming tour after his 2023 LP of the same name, his eighth studio album overall and his first in three years.

Chicago/Earth, Wind & Fire

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire , two of the most popular bands of the 1970s, are combining for a mega-concert journey, the "Heart & Soul Tour," from July to September. Each leg of the tour will feature the "timeless music of Chicago and the iconic catalog of Earth, Wind & Fire," according to the band's website , and will "culminate in an encore performance with both bands on stage together." This timeless music will likely feature hits from both groups, including iconic soul soundtracks like "September" and "Shining Star" from Earth Wind & Fire, and rock ballads like "You're the Inspiration" from Chicago. Combined, both groups have won 11 Grammy Awards and sold more than 200 million albums.

Melissa Etheridge/Jewel

Singer Melissa Etheridge has won dozens of accolades and played thousands of venues over her decades-long career, and now she is getting ready to head back on the road. She is teaming with singer Jewel to launch the duo's summer 2024 tour . The tour covers the majority of the summer and runs from July to the beginning of October, with locations throughout the United States and Canada. Etheridge, perhaps best known for her 1993 single "Come to My Window," last released a studio album in 2021, but does not appear anywhere near the end of her journey.

Mannequin Pussy

Philly's punk rock icons are returning to the stage with a new tour. Mannequin Pussy will be embarking on their "I Got Heaven Tour" throughout July and August; the group will begin with shows in the U.K. and Europe before heading home to the United States and Canada, where they will play a series of shows before crisscrossing back to Europe again. Mannequin Pussy's music is "built on big emotions and inside jokes," said The New York Times , and the group is touring to promote their most recent studio album and fourth LP, "I Got Heaven," which was released earlier this year.

Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl and his band the Foo Fighters will be traveling down a sonic highway when they embark on their "Everything or Nothing at All Tour" in July and August. The tour comes a year after the group released their 11th LP, "But Here We Are," dedicated to both Grohl's mother Virginia and deceased band member Taylor Hawkins . The Foo Fighters will be playing shows in Manchester, Glasgow, London and other cities in the United Kingdom before playing a series of concerts in the United States. Once in America, the group, which was born out of the iconic 1990s grunge band Nirvana, will play 14 shows in 11 different cities.

Undoubtedly one of the most unique bands on this list, the psychedelic rock group Phish has formed one of the most loyal followings in music over a 40-year career (Drew Carey "talked to God" after seeing them, the television host said on X ). Now, Phish will grace the stage again with their summer 2024 tour in the United States, which will run from July to the beginning of September and will coincide with the release of their 16th LP, "Evolve," set to drop on July 12. This will mark the group's first official studio album in four years, though they did release a 2022 album under a different name.

Green Day released their 14th studio album, "Saviors," earlier this year, and they are not wasting any time promoting it. The punk rock icons are venturing on a concert tour of the same name from July 19 to Sept. 28. The band will play their popular LPs "Dookie" and "American Idiot" in their entirety, and it is very much a global endeavor: Green Day will play venues in Spain, France, Germany, the U.K., Austria and more before crossing the pond to play shows across the United States and Canada. The band is keeping busy now, as they recently headlined a UN-backed climate concert in San Francisco.

Kings of Leon

Many of the biggest names touring this summer are rock bands, and Kings of Leon are no exception. The Nashville-based group will head out on a summer 2024 tour from August to mid-October, beginning in European destinations such as the U.K., Austria, Ireland and France before playing 27 cities in the United States and Canada. The tour will be supporting Kings of Leon's ninth studio album, "Can We Please Have Fun," which was released this past February. Notably, this is the band's first album to not be released via their original recording label, RCA.

You can usher in the end of the summer on a high note by seeing one of the most notable R&B singers of all time, as Usher is embarking on his "Past Present Future" tour beginning at the end of August. The singer is riding high after a notable performance in February at Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, the city where Usher also held multiple residencies totaling 100 shows. Usher will tour cities throughout the United States on his concert venture and is planning on touring Europe throughout 2025. His ninth LP, "Coming Home," was released to coincide with his Super Bowl performance.
