Top 10 best Wilderness Safaris lodges in Africa
Monday newsletters always feature top 10 travel lists to inspire.
Today: Top 10 best Wilderness Safaris lodges in Africa
Wilderness Safaris is widely acclaimed as Africa’s foremost luxury and sustainable safaris operator. The company was founded in 1983 in Botswana by two young guides, who wanted to ensure the financial benefits of their safaris flow to Botswana and its people. Today, Wilderness Safaris is operating over 40 camps in six countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. As a conservation organisation and a responsible ecotourism operator Wilderness Safaris believes fully in its vision of the 4Cs – Commerce, Conservation, Community and Culture – as contributing meaningfully to the wildlife and the people of Africa. They create life-changing journeys for guests in some of the most remote and pristine areas in Africa, hereby helping to conserve Africa’s spectacular biodiversity and share ecotourism’s benefits with the communities that live alongside these areas. Several of Wilderness Safaris’ lodges rank among the most iconic properties on earth and here’s my list of the 10 best Wilderness Safaris lodges (the majority of them being located in Botswana).

10. LITTLE KULALA CAMP, SOSSUSVLEI, NAMIBIA
Little Kulala’s home is the 27 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve, a pristine wilderness sited in Namibia’s Namib, nicknamed ‘The Living Desert’. A welcome oasis, the camp lies along the dry Auab riverbed. You can’t get much closer to the renowned dunes of Sossusvlei and the haunting panoramas of Dead Vlei, accessible through an exclusive-use gate. Recently refurbished, Little Kulala entices with its adventures, its landscapes, its peace. Totally solar-powered, the new camp has cleaner, more modern lines than its predecessor, opening out more to the desert. Its 11 climate-controlled suites – each with its own plunge pool – honor the local geology, reflecting the surrounding grey and pink limestone in color and texture. Each suite’s rooftop invites private sundowners and suppers, and a roll-out bed on a shaded sala is perfect for an afternoon siesta or starry sleep-out.

9. SEGERA, KENYA
Segera lies in the high grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau in central Kenya, which boasts the country’s second highest wildlife density. By game vehicle, guests explore the historic savannah, rich with various plains game as well as lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyaenas, elephants, buffalos, reticulated giraffes, African wild dogs, Segera’s elegant six timber and thatch villas, raised above a wild, botanical profusion, offer views towards snow-capped Mount Kenya. Each large, en-suite bedroom, with high-pitched roofs and crisp-white linens, has a private deck with sun loungers, swing bed, and sunken jacuzzi. The main area is comprised of the Paddock House, Wine Tower, and renovated stables, complete with bar and dining room filled with contemporary African art from the Zeitz Collection, the setting for enjoying internationally renowned cuisine.

8. VUMBURA PLAINS, OKAVANDO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Captivating Vumbura Plains lies in the far north of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inland delta on Earth. Perched on raised decks in the midst of the melapo – the annually inundated grasslands – the camp almost floats over water, radiant blue and pure enough to drink. Nestled under tree canopies and airily open to nature, Vumbura Plains is an artful, contemporary balance of wood, glass, and canvas, reflecting the colors of the spectacular floodplains, studded with ilala palms and small islands. Its 14 spacious suites include indoor and outdoor showers, an en-suite bathroom, private plunge pool, and outdoor ‘sala’ from where you can view the never-ending wildlife parade. Leopard cubs coming to drink at the camp swimming pool, for instance; hippos ‘mowing’ the grasses nearby; a baby elephant being taught how to use his trunk.

7. KING’S POOL, CHOBE NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA
King’s Pool’s lies next to Chobe National Park and is at the crux of the important wildlife corridor straddling Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. Such corridors are essential to promote viable, self-sustaining wildlife populations and reduce human-wildlife conflict. Refurbished in 2019, King’s Pool nestles under ebony and jackalberry trees and overlooks the Linyanti River and an oxbow lagoon, the ‘King’s Pool’ – honouring Swedish King Carl Gustav XVI, who reportedly honeymooned nearby in the seventies. Totally solar-powered, richly hued in copper and teal, the camp offers eight elegant thatch and canvas suites, each boasting a spacious bedroom and lounge leading to a veranda embracing views of the picturesque lagoon and surrounds. The sumptuous common areas are stylishly set on expansive raised decks close to the water’s edge, perfect for watching all the wildlife dramas unfold.
- Hotel website : King’s Pool
6. ABU CAMP, BOTSWANA
Abu’s home is the 180 000-hectare Abu Private Reserve, one of the largest exclusive protected areas in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Named after a very special bull elephant, Abu Camp is set in a pristine pocket of riverine forest and blends in seamlessly with the magnificent surrounding hardwood trees. Looking out over a large lagoon, an imaginative use of canvas has created a unique and luxurious style of tent. Each of the six en-suite units has its own distinctive furnishings and fittings, imparting an air of opulence in the bush. These airy tents feature an indoor and outdoor shower, an outdoor copper bath and a generous elevated teak deck. Well-lit pathways link the guest tents with the main lounge and dining area and a well-stocked library and study, gym and swimming pool will keep you entertained while at camp. Exploring the bush is done by game drive, mekoro, walks – or by elephant!

5. DUMATAU & LITTLE DUMATAU, LINYANTI WILDLIFE RESERVE, BOTSWANA
Nestled deep within the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, on the northernmost fringe of Botswana, lies DumaTau. The reserve’s diverse, pristine 95 000 acres offers truly exclusive excursions and close-up wildlife encounters. Newly rebuilt DumaTau takes full advantage of its 45 km (28 mi) of river frontage to create an unparalleled safari experience. Eight tented suites with private plunge pools sit on wooden walkways mere steps from the wildlife corridors, so animals often wander peacefully through camp. Interiors of hand-crafted mosaic tile, acacia wood, and local textiles reflect the heart of the Linyanti. The camp’s new spa, the Osprey Retreat, soothes your soul. As do all the elephants, whose moving herds compose one of Africa’s most elemental rhythms. Similar in style to DumaTau, Little DumaTau is an intimate haven of sophisticated elegance, with just four supremely spacious guest suites.

4. JAO CAMP, OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA
Jao lies in the 60 000-hectare Jao Reserve in the heart of the Okavango, under a tree canopy on its own remote island, with renowned Moremi Game Reserve bordering on the east. Revamped in 2019, multiple-award winner Jao is a sculptural marvel of natural and recycled materials, of steel, wood, and glass, of towering, spacious interiors embracing the light, the bush. Offering spectacular land- and water-based game viewing, and extras like its spa, library, museum, and gallery. Jao comprises a main area elevated into the tree canopy, two exclusive villas, and five suites, all with private plunge pools, lounge and dining areas, and en-suite bathrooms, including indoor and outdoor showers. With views of the magnificent floodplains from almost everywhere, Jao’s a place of wonder and supreme serenity.
- Hotel website : Jao Camp
3. BISATE LODGE, VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA
Comprising just 6 spacious forest villas, Bisate offers a luxurious base from where to enjoy an extraordinary gorilla conservation experience and life-changing journey to this beautiful region. Situated within the amphitheater of an eroded volcanic cone, Bisate is surrounded by natural splendor, with sweeping views towards the Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mikeno volcanoes. Bisate’s sophisticated architectural and interior design is rooted in Rwandan building tradition as exemplified in the design of the Royal Palace of the traditional monarch. The spherical, thatched structures echo the thousands of hills that dot the Rwandan landscape, while the richly-detailed interiors exhibit surfaces and screens made from a variety of woven materials with strong resonance in Rwandan culture. Since opening in 2017, Bisate has racked up 34 awards and continues to inspire superlatives.

2. HOANIB SKELETON COAST CAMP BY WILDERNESS SAFARIS, NAMIBIA
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is located in Namibia’s ancient Namib Desert’s famed Kaokoveld, an otherworldly and remote landscape hewn over the ages into immense dunes and rocky mountains. The lodge’s eight luxury tented suites peak like whitecaps on an ocean of sand. Totally solar-powered, Hoanib has a fresh, contemporary design, with a color palette reflecting the surrounding desert. The camp (suites, common areas, pool) looks out on a wide, rugged valley that slopes down to the usually dry Hoanib River. Highlights include a spectacular dry-and-fly excursion to the Skeleton Coast and dining under impossibly starry skies, perhaps at the firepit as a jackal cries or a lion roars, punctuating the stillness of the inky night. The property also doubles as a center for research and conservation of the desert-adapted predators of this harsh region: the desert-adapted lion and brown hyaena.

1. MOMBO AND LITTLE MOMBO CAMP, BOTSWANA
Mombo Camp, situated in the northern point of wildlife-filled Chief’s Island in the Okavango Delta, is set under large, shady trees overlooking a floodplain generally filled with life. Rebuilt in 2018, repurposing much of the material, Mombo maintains the traditions and history of the legendary original camp. The camp’s eight spacious and ultra-luxurious ensuite tents are raised from the ground, with a long veranda, a sala and indoor and outdoor showers. Mombo Camp’s main living, bar and dining areas are under thatch, while the boma adds traditional flavor to a delicious dinner under the stars. There are two plunge pools in which to soak and a gym to work off the excellent food. Little Mombo, situated on Chief’s Island, is a smaller and more intimate camp to its sister and has its own dining and lounge area and a sparkling pool.
- Hotel website : Mombo & Little Mombo
- Other accolades : Mombo and Little Mombo Camp also feature in my top 10 lists of the Africa’s most luxurious safari lodges .

The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022
The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.
For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.
This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."
At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."
Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."
1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

When you plan your custom safari with our Chief Designers, we can help outline the most prolific destinations for your Botswana safari for your chosen time of travel - and also help you determine the best time to visit, if your plans are flexible.
The highlight here is the great concentration of predators and plains game on the secluded Mombo Island where Mombo camp is located.
Wildlife at Mombo
Over the years I listened avidly as the Yei peddlers recounted the stories of the area. In their eyes, it had an almost mythical quality: huge herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and all the predators - excerpt from Mombo, Okavango’s Place of Plenty (2004)
The tented suites at Mombo Camp & Little Mombo are spacious and elegant with an open layout featuring a private deck area with a plunge pool and thatched gazebo for afternoon siestas or watching the ever-present wildlife grazing on the floodplains.

Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Botswana. Today.
We so enjoyed the boat trips, big and small, the helicopter ride was the BEST and a must, and sundowners on the overlooking the delta were great.
As we were in our boat, just as the sun was going down, a male elephant came out of the reeds and crossed the lagoon right next to us - simply magical.
This area of the Okavango is stunning, with both deep water channels and open park-like grasslands with beautiful trees that go on forever. Watching the red lechwe fly over the water is grace itself.

Here’s why a visit to South Africa’s Lepogo Lodges could be the most eco-friendly safari in Africa
For many of us, safaris conjure up ideas of luxury, exclusivity and owners paying no mind to sustainability.
While that is sometimes the case, Lepogo Lodges operate in a very different manner.
In South Africa's Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, this particular safari destination certainly offers a luxury experience, but it also gives back, too.
At the forefront of sustainable tourism, the brains behind Lepogo set it up with a very different kind of safari lodge in mind - one that operates off-grid, embraces sustainable technologies and contributes to the surrounding land and nearby communities.
To learn more about the conservation legacy Lepogo’s owners are continuing to create, Euronews Travel spoke to company operations director Kate Hughes, whose family set up the venture.
How did Lepogo Lodges come about?
“Lepogo Lodges was born from a desire to leave a conservation legacy, protecting endangered animals and land for future generations. Having pledged to be not-for-profit to enable this, we purposefully set our lodges to be a testament to luxury and sustainability,” Kate explains.
From the off, the team ensured that there would never be any more than three commercial lodges in the entire 50,000 hectare Lapalala reserve. That was not just to protect the natural infrastructure but also to offer guests a tranquil experience, a world away from the typical crowded safari experience .
“We knew immediately when we discovered the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province that the pristine, unspoilt beautiful reserve was perfect. Our off-grid haven stands out as a rare gem and our vision was to leave an enduring legacy of sustainability - protecting and conserving the beautiful surroundings and wildlife.”
Lepogo’s sustainability pledge has been in place from the time it first opened its doors in 2019.
That year, Noka Camp was the first lodge launched. It consists of five stilted villas perched atop a 30 metre-high cliff, with stunning views of the winding Palala River below.
In January 2024, Melote House - the second property - was unveiled.
Inspired by the rock formations of the region, it features living roofs that small animals can graze on as well as design which blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
Both lodges have remained off-grid and each visitor has their carbon journey offset - from the moment they leave their home to the minute they return. It is something Hughes believes is a first among properties in Africa.
The carbon offset figure is converted into a monetary value which is then donated by Lepogo to one of three local conservation or community projects, chosen by each individual guest.
One of their most successful - and environmentally beneficial projects - is the Community Stove Programme. Local communities are provided with stoves which not only improves nutrition but can also save each household eight tonnes of wood per year.

How has Lepogo maintained its sustainable ethos?
“We are also deeply committed to community engagement and education through our partnership with the Lapalala Wilderness School and we prioritise supporting the local community above all else,” Hughes tells Euronews Travel.
Part of that aim was Lepogo’s intention to operate as a not-for-profit venture right from the beginning.
“This allowed us to align our mission with our core values of conservation, community empowerment and sustainable tourism,” she explains.
“Through adopting a non-profit model, we reinvest all profits back into our conservation efforts and wildlife protection initiatives, ensuring a positive impact and enduring legacy for the future of the surrounding Lapalala Wilderness and its community.”
Conservation of endangered species for the future is also a significant part of Lepogo’s mission. In 2019, they supported the Lapalala Wilderness with a cheetah reintroduction.
"The Lapalala Wilderness is one of the most beautiful, unspoilt, biodiverse reserves in Southern Africa with an outstanding commitment to conservation. We knew the location was perfect from the beginning; as one of South Africa's largest private game reserves, it offers a truly immersive wilderness experience, allowing guests to reconnect with nature in its purest form."
Lepogo is inextricably linked with cheetahs, not least because the name ‘Lepogo’ derives from the Sotho word for the animal.
“Preserving the cheetah is at the heart of Lepogo Lodges,” Hughes says, “Land’s fastest animal, cheetahs are considered a cherished emblem of Africa’s wildlife heritage but are facing numerous challenges in the world which, tragically, makes them highly endangered by human activity.”
At its core, she explains, the “conservation legacy is deeply rooted in our commitment to safeguarding Africa's precious wildlife and habitats for future generations.”
As well as their work with cheetahs, Hughes and the team strive to make a lasting impact on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.
They are using anti-poaching tactics and habitat restoration programmes to ensure animals including the African wild dog, cheetah, buffalo and black rhino can not just survive but also thrive within the reserve.
How does Lepogo give back to the local community?
“The majority of our workforce is hired from the local community,” Hughes explains, “This deliberate choice stems from our belief in the importance of community empowerment and the recognition of the invaluable local knowledge and expertise that these individuals bring to Lepogo.”
Team members with local knowledge are able to enrich guests’ experience, with their unique insights into land, wildlife and cultural nuances.
The hiring process is of benefit to locals, too. “Hiring locally not only creates employment opportunities but also fosters a sense of ownership and pride within the community, strengthening our relationship and mutual commitment to the conservation and sustainable development of the region,” Hughes says.
The Lepogo team also sponsors many of their staff in their career progression and supports them in their studies to achieve the required qualifications needed to move forward in their working lives.
They work with residents in partnership with the Lapalala Wilderness School, too.
Established in 1981 by artist and conservationist Clive Walker and philanthropist Dale Parker, the centre was set up to teach children the importance of the environment and biodiversity. Much of the fresh produce served at the lodge comes straight from the School’s gardens.
It’s not just food which is sourced locally.
Kamatsogo Craft Art was founded in 2006 as an empowerment project for The Clive Walker Foundation. Since then, it’s continued to create employment opportunities and give women a purpose through the production, marketing and sales of hand-crafted products.
Their current initiative, 'changing lives stitch by stitch’, sees these products for sale in the lodge's shop.
Local women also handcraft bed mats and placemats used at Lepogo, with placemats made from the Palala palm, plucked from the river flowing beneath the lodge. The nearby Timola community creates room spray and amenities for the shop.
Why visit Lepogo Lodges over other alternatives?
“Many visitors appreciate the opportunity to experience South Africa's natural beauty while knowing their stay directly contributes to meaningful conservation efforts,” Hughes says.
“Additionally, our guests also seek out Lepogo Lodges for the exceptional luxury and hospitality we provide which extends beyond our beautifully designed accommodation offerings”.
“By choosing Lapalala, we aim to not only provide guests with an unparalleled safari experience but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and preservation of this remarkable wilderness area,” she adds.
