A classroom scavenger hunt is an activity where the students are given a set of clues, which they must follow to gather a set of results. At the simplest level, the list could be the names of various objects that must be found in or around the classroom. At the other end of the scale, the clues may be math problems, all of which need to be solved to complete the hunt.

Having a classroom scavenger hunt is an interesting and exciting way to get students involved in their learning. It is also downright fun.

More importantly, however, a scavenger hunt is the perfect way to get students thinking creatively and working together to apply their knowledge to problems. This makes the learning interactive, as well as personal.

A scavenger hunt is a great way to test the understanding of basic concepts and ideas, as well as give kids the best opportunities to apply what they know in an active manner.

A classroom scavenger hunt is great fun and puts the emphasis of the learning situation on the kids and their actions. Beyond these, though, there are other benefits for kids.

Builds Problem-Solving Skills

The way a scavenger hunt works is to give the students written clues they have to follow to find something. This may be in the form of a physical object, a QR code that they need to scan, or even the answer to a complex problem.

All the clues are mini-problems that need to be solved. This is one of the great benefits of  classroom scavenger hunts: they build problem-solving skills at various levels.

Easy To Customize

Some scavenger hunts are ‘one-size-fits-all’. These will use ideas and questions that are either universally applicable or are general and open-ended enough to be applied in any context.

A hunt set around angles in Grade 9 Math will be suitable for all Grade 9s following that curriculum, anywhere. A scavenger hunt for lower grades that asks for items such as ‘Something that is red’ will also fit just about any context.

However, not all situations, places and contexts are the same, so not all scavenger hunts will be suitable in every classroom. This is the beauty of scavenger hunts. If the overall idea and the general clues are well thought through and set out, they can be adapted to suit your kids and your context.

Exercises Both Body And Mind

At the simplest level, a classroom scavenger hunt will ask the students to find objects, following clues. Even at this level, they engage their minds as they solve the clues and bodies as they find the objects.

More advanced hunts may require more mind than body work. However, as an approach to classroom activities, scavenger hunts all demand exercising both the body and mind.

Teaches Teamwork

It is very unlikely for students in a classroom scavenger hunt to work alone because classes are large and it’s more practical for the kids to work together. More importantly, however, putting your students into groups and setting them off on the hunt means they need to learn to work together to find the answers and complete the hunt.

When you put together a scavenger hunt, make sure all your ducks are in a row.

Step 1: Gather The Sets Or Resources

You can’t hold a classroom scavenger hunt without all the resources. This may mean gathering actual objects and designing a clue sheet. It may also mean finding or downloading resources, books or sheets. Write a checklist and make sure you have everything ready before you begin to work on the logistics of the hunt.

Step 2: Print And Laminate All Materials

Don’t think of a scavenger hunt as being a once-off. It is the kind of activity that you can repeat year after year with different classes. You may even be able to adapt a hunt and use it more than once a year.

Make sure, then, that all the materials are durable. Try to laminate the clue sheets and playing cards, rather than only printing them. Not only will they withstand the hunt, but they should last for a good while.

Step 3: Place Resources All Around The Classroom

Before you begin the hunt, make sure that you have put all the necessary objects, problems or solutions in the correct places around the classroom (or outdoors if you choose to go that route) . You can’t expect the kids to find things that aren’t there to find.

Step 4: Assign Students Partners Or Into Small Groups

Bring the students into the classroom (or other space) and divide them into pairs or small groups. Classroom scavenger hunts work best this way. Try to keep the groups no bigger than 4, but 3 is possibly the optimum number in a group.

Step 5: Provide The Groups With Clue Sheets

The way you run the hunt will depend on the grade you are working with. In the lower grades, it will most probably be more effective to give each group one clue at a time. They must all solve it, find the answer and return, before the whole class moves onto the next clue.

With the middle and higher grades, it would be most effective to give the groups the list and let them complete the clues in their own time.

Step 6: Review All Questions

A classroom scavenger hunt doesn’t end when the students have solved all the clues. It ends when the results have been checked. This means that you will need to review all the questions and the solutions and make sure each group has solved all the clues correctly.

Because this is a classroom activity, you may find that it works best to go through the questions and answers together.

Step 7: Encourage Discussion And Wrap-Up The Lesson

Remember that a classroom scavenger hunt is still a lesson, so you will need to round it off. This is where the students can contribute to a solid discussion and you can bring the lesson back to the learning point.

This is a straightforward, fun activity for the lower grades. It takes them out of the house or classroom, looking for items outdoors. You can replace some of the items to suit your own environment.

You can make up any kind of scavenger hunt on your own that will suit your situation and your kids. However, there are so many resources for hunts available, that it may be more time-effective to use one of these. You can also adapt an existing scavenger hunt to suit your context.

The nature of a scavenger hunt is that the players must think quickly and creatively to solve clues. This is the perfect opportunity for students to collaborate and to share their knowledge to a specific end. It is also simply logistically easier for a big group of kids to do the hunt in smaller groups.

Learning actively and interactively means that the students are engaged in the process and have to find the answers for themselves by applying what they know. This is learning they will remember. How do you do a scavenger hunt in school?

If you are ready to create a fun activity at school for the students, a scavenger hunt is a great start. A scavenger hunt creates guided exploration for students to explore the environment. It can be done independently in a quiet setting with each student completing the task on their own. This can also be turned into a group activity where a group of students need to work together in a team to accomplish the task.

It’s very easy to set up a scavenger hunt at school. Create a list of things you want the kids to find and add these items to a scavenger hunt checklist. We’ve done the hard work for you and created a scavenger hunt set you can use. Either print both or one.

To set up the scavenger hunt:

• Download the classroom scavenger hunt .
• Print enough classroom scavenger hunts for each student or each team.
• Go over the rules. This hunt does require you to go in common and public spaces. Make sure kids know to keep low or quiet voices.
• If doing this with a new student, create a buddy system and allow fellow classmates to lead them around the school and show them their new environment.

Optional: Print these on cardstock for durability. You can even laminate the scavenger hunts to use year after year. Kids can use dry-erase markers when they find the item and complete the task.

Can this scavenger hunt be done in a preschool classroom?

Yes, this school scavenger hunt can be done in many places. The age of the kids includes kindergarten, elementary school, and preschool. This is a perfect classroom scavenger hunt preschool worksheet because it includes exploring a new environment and the five senses. Since many preschoolers do not visit an art room, you can talk about the art area in general. Since some preschool environments don’t have a “principal’s office” you can talk about the director of the school and introduce a new vocabulary word – principal. Lastly, teach children about colors and the five senses as you work to discover objects with different colors, shapes, and textures. Just adapt the environment for the school scavenger hunt list as needed. Use rooms or facilities you might not have as examples for discussions.

To further this lesson with preschoolers, as the teacher you could also go on a virtual scavenger hunt of their “big school” right before they approach graduating from preschool. Instead of using this hunt at the beginning of the school year, you are going to save it for the end of the year when your students are starting a new “big kid” school, aka kindergarten. For younger kids, create a slide show of their new school with the images in the school scavenger hunt checklist.  With a little creativity, you can visit almost any place on a virtual field trip. If your students are going to different schools – let’s say three, then have an image of three different gyms. What a great way to reduce those first-day-of-school anxieties. I bet the parents will love you (I mean they likely already do!)

Is this scavenger hunt a competition?

That is really up to you. The school classroom scavenger hunt can be done individually or in teams. With either, you can race against the clock or race against other teams/individuals.  Keep in mind, competition tends to create louder voices. If doing this as a friendly competition, have rules for voice levels and running.  You know your students. If you don’t and you want to control the environment and behavior, it’s best to avoid competition. Instead, have a small reward for completion with an end time at the end of the day. Completion can be done on your own timeline and everyone wins.

Organizing Students into Teams

To set up a classroom scavenger hunt, you’ll want to begin by organizing your students into teams. Depending on your class size and the level of challenge you’d like, you can have students work in pairs, small groups, or even individually if preferred.

Assign each team different colors or unique identifiers to make it easy to organize and track their progress throughout the activity.

The list should include objects with different shapes, sizes, colors, and in different areas of the room. This will encourage students to explore their surroundings in the school setting and think critically about where these objects can be found.

Scavenger hunt worksheet or chart – The printable classroom scavenger hunt sheet will guide kids to find certain items and keep them on track.

Scavenger hunt tracker – Create a simple chart to keep track of items or clues found by each team. This can be a simple table or a more visually engaging document to make the activity more enjoyable.

Timer – Set a timer for a certain amount of time. How much time you set is up to you, but I recommend 10, 15, or 20 minutes, based on the age and abilities of the kids.

Fun and Rewards for Successful Scavenger Hunts

A classroom scavenger hun t is a fun and engaging learning experience for your students. To keep the momentum going, consider incorporating rewards for successful completions. These rewards could be simple, such as:

• Positive praise and encouragement for finding the items and solving the clues
• A small prize, like a sticker or treat, for each team member when their team completes the hunt
• A reward for the whole class, such as a bonus activity (ex: extra recess) or extra game time, if all teams successfully complete the scavenger hunt

Remember, the goal is to create a friendly and engaging environment to help make brand new students feel more comfortable!

Anything in the classroom is fair game! I recommend sticking with easily-identifiable images, though!

There are several ways to group students for a scavenger hunt, depending on your objectives and the desired outcomes. Free printable classroom scavenger hunt ideas for kids.

A good classroom scavenger hunt has a list of items kids must try and find throughout their school. This fun classroom activity has different clues or pictures that kids must search for on their own or in small groups. They’ll follow the list of clues and check off each item they find. The first group to complete the school scavenger hunt wins.

It’s a really fun way to work on kids’ observational skills while also getting them up and moving. Plus it’s so simple to play just print out the free scavenger hunt list and you’re ready to play. 

When To Use a Classroom Scavenger Hunt

What I love is you can use these  free classroom scavenger hunts  for so many different things throughout the year. Here are some suggestions for the best way to use the hunts.

1. Start at the beginning of the school year by using the scavenger hunt to help kids learn where everything is in the classroom. Such as school supplies or where their backpacks go.

It’s a great  back-to-school activity  on the first day of school or an open house before the school year starts.

2. It works as a great last-minute  rainy-day activity  when you’re stuck inside for recess. Just quickly print out the list and send the kids on a hunt around the school or in the classroom.

Types of Classroom Scavenger Hunts

This is a great scavenger hunt for younger students. On the printable hunt there will be pictures of each item the kids need to find. They can either follow the pictures or the easy text under the pictures for those learning to read. 

Text Clue Scavenger Hunts

For these hunts, older kids will have a checklist of specific items to find in the classroom, around the school, or outside the school. They can check off the box next to the text every time they find an item. 

Classroom Eye Spy Hunt

This Eye Spy Game is for classroom use and has clues of items they need to find around the room. For instance  – I Spy something round, or I Spy something with the letter M. When they spy something that matches the clue they can check that item off the list.

How to Create the Perfect High School Scavenger Hunt

I dreaded the first day of school–until I created my own high school scavenger hunt! This activity allowed me to introduce my students to their new classroom, my classroom expectations, and get students moving and talking on day 1–without me lecturing for a full hour!

What is a High School Scavenger Hunt?

You’re probably familiar with the idea of a scavenger hunt. In a traditional scavenger hunt, someone provides the players with clues. The players must then use those clues to find more clues, locations, or hidden items. 

A classroom scavenger hunt isn’t much different, but every teacher can add their own flavor.  

Personally, I never wrote any riddles or required students to find anything in a particular order. Instead, I gave students questions about classroom expectations and procedures and required them to find the answers. 

These answers, of course, were already posted around the room for students to find. 

Once the prep work is done, a classroom scavenger hunt is easy to implement. In my opinion, it’s definitely easier than going through a slideshow or paper list of classroom rules. It is definitely more engaging for students, too. 

The goals for my back-to-school scavenger hunts were to get students to explore the classroom and to learn class procedures. 

Why is a Scavenger Hunt the Perfect Back-to-School Activity?

When you teach, you probably don’t spend sixty to ninety minutes lecturing at students. You probably don’t expect students to sit quietly without doing any work, thinking, or writing. 

Yet, this is what a lot of first days of class look like. You hand out a syllabus (maybe you made it, maybe your district gave it to you). And the rest of the class is going over that syllabus, walking students through classroom rules, and maybe doing a getting to know you worksheet.”

Those are things that we have to get through, but this format is not indicative of your class. I know your class is way more engaging, interactive, and interesting than that!

And that’s why a classroom scavenger hunt is a better way to start the school year. 

Instead of a long sit-and-get, you’ll get your students up and moving from day one . You’ll still go over classroom expectations and introduce students to your classroom, but you’ll do it in a way that will be more authentic to your teaching style. 

Plus, your students will know right away that they can’t check out in this class. They are going to have to get up and get to work. 

Even better is that you as the instructor won’t have to be front and center for the entire class. Once you’ve given students directions, you can walk around and start actually engaging with your new students. 

In fact, this is why I began doing scavenger hunts on the first day. It was way easier for a teacher with social anxiety like me. 

Creating a High School Scavenger Hunt Step #1: Plan

The first step in creating your high school scavenger hunt is probably obvious–you’re going to have to create a plan. 

First, you want students to understand the important areas of your classroom–the laptop cart, your classroom library, the location of extra supplies, etc. 

Secondly, you want them to understand the expectations for each of those areas of the classroom. 

So, create a list of every important place in the classroom. Where will students turn in work? Are there areas of the classroom that students shouldn’t engage with? Is there an area that’s special to your classroom–like a costume rack in a theater classroom?

Make a quick list. Then, list all of the procedures and expectations that students need to know about these locations. 

For example, if you have computers in your classroom, students might need to know not to eat or drink near them. They might need to learn their assigned computer number. You might want to highlight the important parts of your school’s technology policy. 

Aim for at least ten places in your classroom that you’ll want students to identify. Remember, even the location of a pencil sharpener or an emergency escape route can be important places in your classroom!

Creating a High School Scavenger Hunt Step #2: Write Descriptions

Now that you know where students will go and what they will learn , it’s time to write it down. 

In my Back-to-School Scavenger Hunt template , you can simply edit the labels to suit your classroom. But they don’t have to be fancy.

You can create a label for each area of your classroom and write a blurb about its expectations on a notecard or type and print them. 

I recommend laminating these labels if you’ll be repeating this activity in the future. 

Creating a High School Scavenger Hunt Step #3: Create Questions

Now it’s time to create the actual scavenger hunt. You don’t need to create complicated riddles to do this. 

Instead, create one question for each of the areas in your classroom. The answer to these questions should be on the corresponding location’s label. 

For example, I had a label for my classroom library. At the top of this label, it said “Classroom Library” very clearly. The question for this area I put on my students’ worksheet was, “Which area of the classroom is Ms. Heather’s favorite?”

In order to learn that the classroom library was my favorite place in the classroom, students will have had to find the classroom library label and read the entire description. 

Another example is my room’s laptop cart. The question I included was, “What is your assigned computer number?” To find that, students will have had to read the laptop cart label and the roster with assigned computer numbers on it. 

Once you have these questions, mix them up so students have to wander just a bit around the classroom.

Creating a High School Scavenger Hunt Step #4: Create an (Optional) Map of Your Classroom

This step is optional, but you can add a map to your scavenger hunt. 

First, create a rough “map” of your classroom. I did this in PowerPoint. I created an 8.5” x 11” slide and just inserted shapes to represent my desk, students’ desks, and to show where doors and windows were. 

This map does not need to be precise, detailed, or even to scale. It is helpful to label the door and the front of the room. 

Then, for each place you want students to explore, create a numbered, blank line. For example, next to the rectangle that represents my classroom library, I’d type “1. _________.” The rectangle that represents my laptop cart might be labeled “2. ______________,” and so on. 

If you choose to use a map, run copies with your questions so that the map is on one side and the questions are on the other. 

As students complete the scavenger hunt, they should label the classroom map and answer the questions on the back. 

Creating a High School Scavenger Hunt Step #5: Execution

Now comes the fun part–actually doing the scavenger hunt!

If you’d really like to earn some early-year bonus points with your students, get small prizes. 

I liked to do small candies (like lollipops or bite-sized chocolate bars). I know food is problematic in many schools. You could do extra credit points, PBIS rewards, or even coupons for things like “first dibs on new classroom library books.”

If you know competition will motivate your students, you could offer prizes for just the first three students to finish first. However, especially at the beginning of the year, I want to reward all engagement and encourage students to move around. So I gave every student a reward for finishing.

As students walk around completing the activity, walk around and engage with your students. 

I liked to hang out by my classroom library to ask students about their feelings about reading or find out their favorite genres. By the end of the first day of class, I usually know who my readers are and who will be more reluctant to read a book. 

If your students tend to be a little pokey or you have short class times, go ahead and display a timer at the front of the room to encourage students to get the job done. 

When all students are done, you can go over the worksheet. This is nice to just make sure students really understand your procedures and to answer any questions students might have.

School Classroom Scavenger Hunt

This Printable Back To School Scavenger Hunt can help familiarize children with the classroom and get them active and having fun. They will also learn where school supplies stay in the classroom too.

This would be perfect for a new classroom and a fun worksheet for the kids. Use this at the start of the school year or to welcome new students. Kiddos of all ages will have fun with this at the beginning of the year or at any time!

Help Children Prepare For School

Children can understandably have a hard time with back to school. Routines are changing, they are not at home, they miss their family, and it happens all overnight. There are many ways that we can help children with this transition and big day! Here are some tips that I hope help you.

Here are some helpful first day of school tips :

• Use our Back To School Scavenger Hunt to help encourage excitement and get familiar with the idea of change.
• Show children their school. Take a drive to show them what it looks like. You could even have them play at the playground. Telling them that they get to play on the playground every day for recess can help.
• Attend open houses and back to school nights. This will not only help children see the inside of their school, but meet their teacher and other students in their class. This is huge. When children, or even adults, have a visual idea of the environment and meet some people, they can begin to feel more comfortable about the idea.
• Watch children’s shows or movies about school and going to school the first time. Parents Magazine has a great list you can find here .
• If possible, plan play dates with other children that will be in the same class.
• Go back to school shopping and make it fun.
• Create a homework nook.
• Take fun back to school photos .
• Do some first week of school activities and first day of school printables.
• Plan a back to school eve party with all of your child’s favorite foods and activities.

One last tip to help your children with back to school is to keep a good attitude. While this season is stressful for grown ups, it can be even more stressful for kids. Encourage them to be excited by keeping your mood positive and happy!

Classroom Use Of Scavenger Hunt

Are you a teacher that is looking for a way to help familiarize your students with school supplies? Whether you are using this as a class management tool or to help your students get to know what the supplies are, this Back To School Scavenger Hunt can absolutely be used in the classroom.

For Class Management: One of the first things that teachers do, or should, is give students a tour around the classroom. This could include the drinking fountain, where students put their backpacks and coats, how to prepare for lunch and of course where the school supplies are. This last one is especially true for older elementary that are allowed to get supplies as they need them. After you give the tour of school supplies, you can have your students complete this scavenger hunt to help reiterate where the supplies are. This can be done individually or in small groups.

Preparing Back To School Scavenger Hunt

Prepping this scavenger hunt is super easy. You just need to print the page. This resource comes in both color and black and white and is one page each. For the classroom, one option is to laminate and use dry erase markers . Then you have it prepped for future years. Children can use any writing utensil that they would like. If you are at home, you can take the supplies and move them around the room or house. Once they are found, they can be checked off. The same can be done in a classroom, or if you are using it to help them learn where the supplies are, they would just stay in their home.

Your children will love using this scavenger hunt to help get ready for school. This can help children reduce the anxiety and calm nerves. This is also great for helping children learn which school supplies are way.

The whole class will have a blast with this assignment because it’s a fun way to find things in the classroom. You can have small prizes or different things to hand out to the kids if you want! Everyone loves a good scavenger hunt, especially kids. So today, teachers, I have a new version of a free printable alphabet scavenger hunt for you to use in the classroom!

Why a  scavenger hunt  with each letter of the alphabet? The short answer is that a scavenger hunt is a great way to keep your students busy while still learning and the best part, is they are so much fun!

It’s also a fun way to get them to learn where everything is in the classroom and help with observation skills.

A scavenger hunt can also be a great way to open conversations about things and to hear what your kids think about the specific object and then a great teaching opportunity for you to tell them more.

Hopefully you won’t need to do a virtual scavenger hunt this year because of distance learning, but the list of items can always be sent home and the student can have family members help them.

How to Use the Classroom Scavenger Hunt

At the bottom of the post you will find the download button for the classroom scavenger hunt printable. The scavenger hunt activity is a PDF file.

Simple download and print as many copies as you have students in the class for the school year.

Hand them out either on the first day of school as an ice breaker or during the first few weeks of the beginning of the year as a class activity.

Have the kids roam around the room finding each item on scavenger hunt and then they can color in the circle or X it out.

The free printable has the word and image for each item from A to Z for the students to find school supplies such as a crayon, teacher’s desk, pencil, textbooks, etc (just like our 100th day printable scavenger hunt). Some of the items you might have to place in your classroom just for them to find like a yearbook.

If you have younger kids, then the pictures will be very helpful!

Another good time to use the classroom scavenger hunt is as a open house activity. The student can pick up a copy at the door and with the help of their parents find the different things in the class or throughout the school even!

For some of the items, you can make a sensory scavenger hunt out of it and have the child touch the item with a particular letter and describe what it’s like. Using all five senses, they can describe what it feels, sounds, looks, smells, and possibly tastes like.

Free School Scavenger Hunt

Learning can take place in a classroom with a pencil and a worksheet. Learning can also take place with children moving around, without a single thing being written down. It’s all about balance, meeting children’s needs and touching on various learning styles. Today I’m offering you an easy way to take learning beyond the classroom as children solve puzzles and work as a team with this Free School Scavenger Hunt.

We’ve had a few indoor recesses recently. Often on these days it can be beneficial to find ways to get children moving and exploring beyond their classroom, but it can be challenging because you are limited to staying indoors. This classroom scavenger hunt is a great option for these days.

When I covered teachers prep periods, I tried to find activities that we could do outside of their classrooms. Often we went outside, but I also found that the children loved exploring throughout the school.

This is when I started creating whole school scavenger hunt clues and adventures beyond the classroom.

Kids love scavenger hunts. They also love puzzles. This free school scavenger hunt combines both of these things and keeps kids engaged and learning while having fun! So to all my teacher friends and educators, I am offering the classroom scavenger hunt clues/riddles for free to give you a quick and easy activity to try with your students. You can use them today or hang onto them for a rainy day.

For homeschooling families, I have included a few simple ideas at the end of the activity description for how you can alter this school scavenger hunt in your home or outside of a school setting. The riddles are a great learning opportunity for students regardless of where they learn.

This scavenger hunt is great anytime of year, and especially at the beginning of the year as a way to explore the school and all that it has to offer kids. Visit 35 Best First Day of School Ideas for more ways to start the year off right.

Free School Scavenger Hunt Materials

One of the great things about this activity is that you don’t need to prepare any special materials. All you need is do is print the pages and spend a few minutes placing them around the school.

You can add a small treat or prize for children at the end of the activity, but that’s up to you.

For the Free Scavenger Hunt game you will need:

• Free Scavenger Hunt Printable Cards

The unique thing about this classroom scavenger hunt is that it takes children beyond the classroom. They will be moving together throughout the school as they solve and follow the various clues. The locations for the clues are as follows:

• Front Doors
• Water Fountain
• Photocopier
• Classroom of a Grade Above
• Custodian/Janitor

If your school does not have one, or more, of these places, you can skip any clues that does not work for you.

As with all scavenger hunts and escape room games for kids, make sure to place all of the puzzles in a safe location. Also, make sure to stay with children while doing the activity.

Each of the cards are numbered so you know which order to hide them, as well as find them. On the bottom right hand corner of each card there is also the location that the page needs to be hidden.

Free Classroom Scavenger Hunt Set Up

Once you have printed all of the cards/clues, take a few minutes placing them throughout your school at the specific locations. Depending on the size of your school, this can be really quick to set up. I can typically set it up during a recess break.

For a few of the clues, such as principal and custodian, it can be fun to include them in your scavenger hunt. If you are able to chat with them ahead of time, they may want to be part of your game, and students tend to love this. It’s also a great way to create a community feel within your school.

If you choose not to give the clues to specific people, you can simply tape the clue on or by their door for children to find.

Once you read a clue, children will work together to figure out where the clue is suggesting for them to go. Then together, the class will move through the school to the next location. They will know they correctly solved the riddle if another clue is found in the next location.

I currently teach kindergarten so I simply place the clue somewhere visible to kids as soon as they are in the right spot. If you have older children playing, you can actually hide the riddle in each location so children have to hunt in the library, gym or wherever, in order to find their next clue.

Also, depending on the size of your school and abilities of your class, I would put aside at least 30 minutes for this scavenger hunt.

You can set up and use this school scavenger hunt any day and any time of year. I love the idea of using this scavenger hunt at the beginning of the year to help familiarize children with the various rooms around the school, but it can be used just as effectively on a rainy day when children may otherwise be in the classroom the whole day.

Free School Scavenger Hunt Clue #1

The first clue can be printed and placed somewhere in the class that children will notice it right away. Or it can be read aloud to the class whenever you are ready to start the free school scavenger hunt!

The clue says to start at the doors at the very front. So children need to head to the front, or main doors of the school. If you have a few sets of doors that could fit this description, don’t worry, it’s up to you where you place the next clue.

If children head to one set of doors and don’t find the next clue, reread the clue to them and have them problem solve and brainstorm where else the clue may be. It’s okay if they don’t solve each clue immediately, that’s part of the fun.

Free Classroom Scavenger Hunt Clue #2

Once children find the clue at the front doors of the school, someone can read the second clue aloud. It suggests to ‘go where there’s running, games and equipment too! ‘

Again, this clue could fit a few locations in the school. If you have sports equipment in the classroom, children may want to check there. This is a great opportunity to discuss, as a group, and let kids share their guesses. Then decide as a team where they want to check first for their next clue.

The clue is intended to lead players to the gym, but it can lead children wherever you placed the next clue and fits the description.

Scavenger Hunt Clue #3

Once players have found the third clue, read it to the group. The clue suggests for players to check the washroom.

Since most schools have several washrooms, I would suggest either placing this clue on the door of the washroom that the children use the most, or the closest washroom to where you read the clue.

Avoid putting the clue in the washroom, it can simply be taped to the door outside.

School Scavenger Hunt Clue #4

Once students find the right washroom, the next clue is very straight forward.

The clue suggests for children to go to the place with ‘lots of books.’

Off to the library!

Classroom Scavenger Hunt Game Clue #5

If you want children to move through the clues quickly, place the library clue on the library doors. If you want your students to explore the library and make the game more challenging, place the clue on a shelf or somewhere less visible in the library so players have to hunt.

This clue tells players to look somewhere that ‘ you can fill a bottle or take a drink’ so players start searching the water fountains.

With this clue there are likely many water fountains throughout the school. You can choose to place the next clue at any of the fountains you want and children will enjoy walking, moving and searching.

Free School Scavenger Hunt Clue #6

Once children find the water fountain with the next clue, you read the riddle:

“Teachers use this to make a copy of a sheet.

Once you find this machine, look down around your feet.”

Off to the photocopier!

School Scavenger Hunt Clue #7

If you have a photocopier that children can pass by, place this clue near the copier around the bottom. Make sure to place it in a safe place for children to search. It does not actually have to be on the photocopier.

It can even be somewhere in the room, even on the lower part of the wall, near a photocopier.

Free Classroom Scavenger Hunt Clue #8

The next clue is one of my favorites, and you can keep it as simple, or interesting as you want. Children are led to the classroom one grade above the grade they are in now. So a group of grade four children will visit the grade five classroom.

If you are in a school like mine, there are more than one grade 5 class. That’s okay, children can try different classes until they find the right one.

This clue can either be placed on the door of the next class, or if you want to make it more fun, plan for the teacher to have the clue and have your students ask the teacher one grade up if they have a riddle for them.

Then the teacher, or even a student in the class, can read the riddle to everyone. It’s a great way for your children to meet another teacher and see their classroom.

Free School Scavenger Hunt Clue #9

Once they have the riddle from the older grade, students are led to the person(s) who ‘ work hard to keep the school clean.’

They are looking for the custodian/janitor. Make sure to stay with children as they find your custodian so that they are not searching through their room or materials.

Like the previous clue, you can integrate your custodian into your scavenger hunt. Students have to find them and ask them if they have a clue for them. Once asked, the custodian can bring out, or even read, the next riddle to the class.

The next clue reads: “ Throughout the school, the principal helps everyone. Walk to their room to continue the fun. “

Principal Riddle Clue #10

Children make their way to the principal’s office. This clue is another great opportunity to include other educators in your game. It is also a wonderful reason for children to visit the principal and a fun interaction for children to have with them.

However, including other staff can be tricky because the school day is busy and they are often out of their rooms/offices. If you have it planned for your class to visit another staff, but they have to leave, they can stick the riddle on their door so that your scavenger hunt can still continue.

The Final Classroom Scavenger Hunt Clue

The principal gets to let children know that they are almost to the end and they are about to win. The final stop is, ‘ the room that you always work in”.

Back to your classroom! The final clue will lead you all back to where you started. Ending back in your room is also an easy way to keep children together and finish the game.

There is a completion clue that reads:

Congratulations, you did it! You worked together and didn’t quit.

For all your hard work, there’s a surprise. Open it up for your prize.

Once back you can give children a small treat, such as an extra recess or special game.

You could also ask a teacher who will be near your room while you and your class are out doing the scavenger hunt, to move the congratulations card and box with the treat(s) onto a table for students to notice as soon as they reenter the room.

Once you are back in your room, you have successfully completed the free school scavenger hunt! Your students were able to decode the riddles and find each of the clues.

Everyone was learning as they problem solved to figure out the clues, practiced team work as they moved through the halls together and are ready to focus on the next activity or lesson since they have had a chance to move their body.

Free School Scavenger Hunt Extension Ideas

I try to create activities that can be done just about anywhere. This school scavenger hunt does require several locations that can typically only be found in a school. However, with a little creativity, you could alter the game to be played in other locations.

To play the scavenger hunt in a home or location that does not have all of the places listed in the clue cards, you can remove any of the cards that don’t fit for you. You can simply skip the card and move onto the next.

Another option is to place the cards in a place closest to where the riddle is describing. For example, instead of children searching a gymnasium, children can check where sporting equipment or games are played in their house.

Instead of a photocopier, children may check a computer printer in their house. You can even print pictures, or words for the different locations and children have to search around for the printed picture of the location their riddle suggests.

In the free school scavenger hunt printable I have also included a free clue card. Here you can add in your own riddle to add more places in your game or a special location that you want your students to visit.

Print the scavenger hunt boards out on computer paper or card stock paper

I prefer card stock paper because it’s sturdier and holds up better in little hands running around playing a first day of school game

Print as many copies as you’d like depending on as many children will be playing this back-to-school scavenger hunt because you want everyone to have their own scavenger hunt sheet

I recommend printing extra copies since the scavenger hunt boards can get lost or damaged in the excitement of the hunt

You can have the children find all the items on their sheet or have them find all the items in a row or column like you do in playing bingo

If you’re playing the hunt with a larger group of children, you can have the children look for the items in teams rather than individually

Math Scavenger Hunts: Simple Math Practice for the Classroom {with FREE Hunts!}

I am one of the lucky ones to have an eighty minute math block EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. But I quickly learned that my students could not spend those eighty minutes sitting in their seats . My students love walking into my classroom and seeing the twenty-four task cards hung up around the room. They know that after our mini-lesson, they are in for a treat!

How to Use a Math Scavenger Hunts in the Classroom:

Our task card scavenger hunts are a pack of twenty-four task cards that require students to solve problems while “hunting down” their next problem. All students start at a different card – this way, students can complete the activity without everyone being crowded around one single problem.

At each card, students will solve the math problem . After they record their answers on the recording sheet (in the correct box), they need to search the room for the solution , which brings them to the next card with a new problem to solve.

Your students will be going around the room to continue to solve and search for the next answer until they get back to the card they started at – this will ensure they got all of the answers correct!

If they end up at their starting card and yet have missed some problems, they know they’ve made a mistake somewhere.

Or if they can’t find their solution around the room, perhaps it’s because they don’t have the right solution!

Using the scavenger hunt setup, students can self-check and work together to correct mistakes.

Four Benefits of Using Math Task Card Scavenger Hunts:

1. Get Students TALKING

I love when my students talk math in my classroom, and encourage discussions about solution strategies and helping each other with incorrect answers.

2. Get Students MOVING

I hang up my Task Card Scavenger Hunts all over my room and grade level hallway and have my students use their clipboards to get up and MOVE around!

3. Get Students IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK

The nature of Task Card Scavenger Hunts gives immediate feedback because if the student cannot find the answer on another card, they know that they made a mistake.

While introducing this activity, I always make sure to discuss what might happen if we can’t find the answer and to circle back to the card they were working on to troubleshoot their solution.

4. Get Students HELP

When my students are working all over my room, I find it really frees up my time and I can move from student to student to give help to those who need it. I also found that this time is the best to pull small groups of students when I see them making the same mistakes or having the same question!

45 Amazingly Fun School Scavenger Hunts for 2024

Scavenger hunts are a great way to help your students with team building and to teach them to use collaborative skills to solve problems.

Scavenger hunts can also be used to reinforce current subject matter in the classroom and social skills with classmates. There are a lot of direct and indirect benefits to hosting a scavenger hunt adventure for your students, which is why you should consider putting this activity on the list of things to do each year in your classroom.

If you've been considering a scavenger hunt but the process of planning the activity has felt daunting, don’t worry! These great ideas will help you to get the right scavenger hunt planned for your teams of students to enjoy.

What is a School Scavenger Hunt?

School scavenger hunts consist of a list of items, riddles, and/or clues, typically designed around the subject matter students are learning, for students to track down, solve, or answer.

School scavenger hunts are a great way to help your students to work on team building activities , interpersonal skills, and problem-solving. These kinds of activities are always a great way to reward students for working hard during the term and to teach them skills at the same time. You can create pretty much any kind of scavenger hunt that you want for your class and base your hunt on pretty much any theme at all.

School-based scavenger hunts can be simply list-hunting events, or you might want to work on clues, riddles, and games for your students to solve. The age of the kids who will be participating makes a difference in the kinds of activities and clues that you can use, so make sure that you are thinking about the skill and maturity level of your students as you plan.

How to Make a School Scavenger Hunt

1. Create a list of items for students to find and assign different point levels based on difficulty.

2. Set a start and end time and decide whether students should work individually or in teams.

3. Run the activity and watch the fun.

4. Consider prizes, rewards, or incentives for top finishers.

School scavenger hunts can be really easy to plan. You might want to check out printable resources that will help you to create clues and lists. You can also make up all of your own materials for the hunt if you want. Technology has also made this process much easier and more interactive with apps and platforms, like Scavify, that can manage everything for you.

First, you will need to curate the list of items, questions, riddles, and/or clues. This is usually the most important and core part of the preparation. Decide whether you'll want a long list or short list for students to complete, the level of difficulty, and the right mix of fun vs. educational.

Next, you'll want to consider whether it makes more sense for students to complete the activity as individuals or in teams. Each route has it's relatively obvious pros and cons. You'll also want to consider whether it makes more sense to have the activity take place in a set place at a set time (e.g. for an hour on a particular day) or whether a more passive version of the activity would be more impactful (e.g. students complete the hunt over the course of the week both in school and at home as a part of homework).

Lastly, you'll probably want to provide some level of incentive to those who complete all the items, take creative approaches toward submissions, or exemplify quality teamwork with others. Prizes and rewards (depending on school policy of course) are usually nice ways to reward students if possible.

School Scavenger Hunt Ideas

1. science lab hunt.

Science classes can have a great time hunting outside or inside for items that they have been learning about in class. Have your students perform little tests or small experiments to be able to get their next clues.

2. Fall or Spring Outdoor Hunt

If you have a large playground or other outdoor space to explore, your teams of students can find wildlife, outdoor items, and more during the race. This is one of the easiest kinds of scavenger hunt to plan.

3. Earth Day Hunt

Earth day is a great excuse for a scavenger hunt, and your teams can work on recycling, finding outdoor items and nature items, and have lots of fun hunting for recycling and earth-day related items. This is also a great chance to let your teams head out to other facilities like recycling facilities as part of the adventure.

4. Happy Holiday Hunt

No matter what holiday is coming up, you can plan a scavenger hunt based on the holiday for your students to enjoy. Make sure that you consider letting students come in costume.

5. Snow Day Hunt

If your students need something to do that is really fun on a snow day, have them complete an at-home or virtual scavenger hunt to keep them engaged.

6. Rhyme Time Hunt

Have your students find things that rhyme with the clues that you have given them. A list of clues like this helps students work on problem-solving, and this list can act like riddles.

7. Seasonal Hunts

If you have planned your scavenger hunt during the changing of the seasons, this can be your theme for your hunt! You can make your hunt about fall, spring, summer, or winter if you wish!

8. Photo Hunt

Make the entire hunt photo-based and have teams take pictures of the items that they are looking for. Teams have to be sure that they get an image of each item on the list to finish the hunt!

9. Meet and Greet Hunt

Turn your kids loose in a large space like the cafeteria or the gym and have them meet people to check off clues on their list. Make sure they learn something about every person they meet to finish the hunt and then have them talk about the people they met at the end.

10. Craft Hunt

Give teams a list of items to find all over the school and then have them race back to the starting point when they have collected them. The first team to make the item that they got supplies for wins!

11. Costume Hunt

Send teams around to find parts of a costume. This might be the school mascot or something else that you have selected. Someone has to dress up in costume at the end to win!

12. Math Hunt

If you have a math class you are creating a hunt for, have them solve math equations to get their next clues.

13. Drawing Challenge

Have your teams draw the items that they have found before they can move on to the next clue. This can be really funny as well as really engaging for kids.

14. Meet Other Classes

Just like in the meet and greet hunt, your team can meet other teams of kids from around the school and make new friends in this version of the meet and greet scavenger hunt.

15. Mad Libs

Have your teams fill in the items that are missing from a Mad libs-style story as they race around the school.

16. Sticker Hunt

Give your teams stickers at each check-in. Fill out the book and win the race!

17. Vocab Words Hunt

Vocabulary words can be hard to remember, but hunting for them as part of the clues in your race can help your teams to learn them.

18. Take a Test

Tests can be stressful, but you can pair up teams and have them work to memorize a phrase, a story, or some other information that you want them to use to solve clues.

19. Navigation Hunt

Have your teams head to all the places that they will need to know about during the school year and check-in.

20. Do Not Speak

Give the teams lists of clues or things to find, but don’t let them talk about things out loud as they are hunting. This taps into other skills related to showing and not telling, which can be a great life skill.

21. Gif Hunt

If all of your teams have smartphones or tablets, have them upload the silliest gifs they can find that are related to the clues as they hunt. The funniest gif wins!

22. Selfie Hunt

Have your teams take a selfie with a prop, or with the clues that they have found at each check-in location.

23. Dance Hunt

Have your team make up a dance move each time they find a clue. At the end of the hunt, have the team perform all the dance moves together.

24. QR Clue Hunt

Have each of your check-ins be done with a QR code using an app like Scavify.

25. Timed Hunt

A race can be a ton of fun for kids, and this is the kind of thing that you can easily plan for your student teams to do. This is a great idea if you have a small space to work with.

26. Baby Picture Hunt

Have your teams race to find baby pictures of everyone in their class or on other teams. The teams need to match the pictures with the yearbook pictures or the start of the year pictures of their friends and classmates to win.

27. Locker Race

Hide clues and prizes in various lockers if your school uses them. Have teams figure out combinations to open the lockers in order to get the next clue.

28. Sports Round-Up

Make your scavenger hunt all about small sporting events. Teams must play through the mini-games to get each clue.

29. Local Knowledge

If the kids in your class are all familiar with the area, use local landmark quizzes as clue answers.

30. Subject Matters

Whatever class you teach, make the clues about current topics that are being discussed in class.

31. Video Games

Have your teams watch small clips of videos and see how fast they can guess what is going on with limited information. This is a race to the finish through all the checkpoints!

32. Favorite Things

Find out all the favorite things of each of the kids in your class. Have teams pair their favorite things with classmates at the end of the race to win!

33. Library Hunt

Have your teams race through the library, finding books that are requested by clues.

34. Cafeteria Race

It’s a clue-solving, snacking race through different checkpoints that are food-based!

35. Spell a Phrase

Each checkpoint or stop will offer a letter that will be used to solve a phrase at the end of the race!

School Scavenger Hunt Clues

These clues are ideal for use in the school environment. Make sure that you consider the age of the kids that you have hunted so that you are not picking clues that are too hard for younger students.

• During the school year, we will head here to see plays and hold assemblies. Answer: auditorium
• When you are hungry, this is the place where you can get a meal or a treat. Answer: the cafeteria
• When you leave your class, you enter this space and travel here from place to place. Answer: hallway
• You will have one of these in each classroom, all your own. Make sure that you don’t write or carve on me while reading a tome. Answer: desk
• Visit this place when you have a headache, or you need a bandaid. Answer: nurses office

School Scavenger Hunt Riddles

• Give me a tap, and I’ll give you some suds. I can come in handy if you are covered in mud. Answer: soap dispenser
• This room has boxes with all the knowledge inside. You will head here for one of your classes, where you will learn to type. Answer: computer room
• Chain your bike up here so that you don’t lose your ride. Make sure that you don’t leave your bike unattended outside. Answer: bike rack
• Feeling cold, bring me along! You will need to have my help as the year goes on. Answer: jacket
• Take a gulp to cool down. When it comes to beverages, I wear the best hydration crown! Answer: drinking fountain

Back to School Scavenger Hunt

Back-to-school time can be tough on some kids.

There is a lot to adjust to, especially for kids moving up a grade into middle or high school. These times are ideal for some team building and some activities that help kids to get to know one another better and feel included.

Scavenger hunts are a great way to get your students talking and interacting, and making friends, even during the first couple of weeks of school.

You can easily plan an ice-breaker scavenger hunt where the activities and check-ins are based on easy ice-breaker games that must be completed to move on to the next clue. Make sure as well that you consider some really simple clues and games that will not intimidate anyone and will make a conversation easy among your teams of students. Students can also race independently with a list in hand if they have a small class.

Sending your students around the school can also be a great way to get them familiar with their surroundings and help them to know where the school nurse is and where all of their classes are. You should consider using this kind of hunt as a way to help kids get used to changing classrooms all day long when they move up from grade school to middle school. There is no reason not to make your scavenger hunt a great way to give your kids an orientation session!

Last Day of School Scavenger Hunt

The end of school can be a sad day for kids. You can make this day less stressful if you make it really fun.

1. Say Your Goodbyes, Hunt

Make sure that your teams find people to take selfies with per category. You can make a list based on classes that people attended together, sports that were played, or anything else that you want to be the motivation for the picture-taking.

2. School Spirit Hunt

Have your teams race for school spirit items and then take a school spirit picture at the end of the hunt to complete it!

3. Visit All the Places

Have your teams race around the school, finding items or clues at all the places where they have taken classes. This will be like a memory lane experience for your students.

4. Create Art

Have teams race to the art room and then bring back all the items on their list. They need to make a copy of the art piece waiting for them to finish the race.

5. Yearbook Race

Make the scavenger hunt focused on yearbook signing. Collecting memories matters, and your teams will be able to share their memories while racing.

6. School Trivia Race

Your teams will know about the school by now, so make all the clues about school spirit and school trivia items.

7. Mini Games

Have your teams play mini-games at each check-in to progress to the next step or clue.

8. Room Race

Give teams a list of classrooms to visit and have clues or activities that must be completed in each room as a race.

9. Memory Round-Up

Have everyone write a memory down before the scavenger hunt. Have teams race to find the memories and then pair them correctly with the participants.

10. Snacking Race

Have your teams race around the school to find snacks, and then they can share their treats at the end of the race!

The scavenger hunt is a new event released globally on Aug 2022, more information on that:

• Use clues to decipher the location of the missing item. Check back after time has passed for additional clues.
• Explore locations to collect missing item, but read your clues carefully…
• Once all items have been collected, return to see if you deciphered the clues correctly.
• There will be 5 clues and it’s randomized for every player, and there’s a waiting time for the next clue.
• Remember, you’ll get the rewards based on how many location clues you have answered correctly.

I’ve designed this free printable scavenger hunt with your little ones in mind, combining fun, education, and excitement all in one activity. All you have to do is print it out and then give it to the kids. 

There are 2 different scavenger hunt lists, both of which are printable pdfs that you can print out as much as you need to. One is a photo version for the younger kids and the other is a list version for the older kids.

How to use this Scavenger Hunt printable

If you are looking for something fun for the kids to do at the beginning of the school year to get them motivated about being in a new classroom this school supply scavenger hunt is perfect. 

After downloading the printable using the form at the bottom of this post you can print out the scavenger hunt with as many copies as you need. 

As they find the items have them take a photo of the item or pick up the different items to collect it and then check off the item on the list using a pen, crayon, marker, or pencil.

How to Use this printable in a classroom

This simple scavenger hunt is a great activity to do with kids during the first week of school. It is an activity that the whole class can get involved in and the kids will look for school items that you will traditionally find in a classroom. 

Have the kids complete it individually . Print out a copy for each kid to complete on their own. You can make it a competition to see which kid completes it first. 

Have kids complete as a group . At the start of the school year getting kids in the classroom to mingle and meet new friends can be difficult. Putting students into groups to complete this classroom scavenger hunt and work on teamwork with their new classmates for a classroom bonding activity. 

Make it a competition . Alternatively, if you prefer a competitive twist with teams, print out a separate copy of the scavenger hunt for each team. Upon starting, instruct the teams to locate and retrieve the items listed, ensuring they return to have them crossed off or capture a photo for verification later.

Fun Ways to Change Things Up
