Disney Cruise Line Luggage: What You Need to Know Before Sailing

Disney Cruise Line Luggage: What You Need to Know

Wondering what the deal is with luggage on Disney Cruise Line vacations? We’re covering the luggage policy, details on checking bags, and more below.

If you’ve never sailed on Disney Cruise Line before, you probably have a ton of questions before your vacation begins. One of the details that’s typically top of mind for soon-to-be cruise sailings is luggage. How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to bring on your Disney Cruise Line vacation? How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to check or carry on with you when boarding? Do Disney Cruise Line staff members help you with your luggage?

In this guide, we’ll answer all of those questions, and more related to luggage on Disney Cruise Line ships, to help alleviate any stress before you set sail.

The Disney Cruise Line Luggage Allowance

How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to bring on your Disney Cruise Line vacation? The luggage allowance for Disney Cruise Line ships is two suitcases per person.

Ahead of your Disney cruise, you will receive luggage tags. These are meant to be placed on the pieces of luggage you’ll be checking (those two suitcases mentioned above). The luggage tags contain your cruise specifics, from your name and reservation number to your stateroom number, ship information, and sailing date. It’s how the porters, or the individuals who handle Disney Cruise Line luggage, will keep track of all of the checked luggage that comes on board.

In addition to the two suitcases you can check, you may bring one carry-on bag (not to exceed 22 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep in dimension) and one personal bag onto the ship.

Pro tip: Make sure you save a little room in your suitcases for any souvenirs you may purchase while on your vacation!

Do Disney Cruise Line Cast Members Help You With Your Luggage?

Yes, Cast Members – porters, to be specific – will be on hand on your departure day to help with your luggage.

If you’re driving or taking cruise transportation , as soon as you arrive at the port, porters will take your luggage off your hands and ensure it gets on the ship. If you’re flying, you will check your luggage in with the Disney Cruise Line Cast Members at the airport after you have arrived.

Regardless, once you hand over your luggage (with those luggage tags attached!), Cast Members will hand-deliver your luggage to your stateroom later on that day. Luggage typically takes just a couple of hours to arrive at your room.

Is There a Luggage Storage Service at Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal?

Disney doesn’t offer luggage storage outside of your stateroom onboard whichever Disney Cruise Line ship you’re sailing aboard, but there are plenty of spots to tuck the bags away after unpacking, such as in the closets or underneath the bed.

What to Pack in Checked Luggage for a Disney Cruise

You can pack pretty much anything in your checked luggage – with a few exceptions! Your checked suitcases are ideal for the bulk of your cruise attire, your toiletries, and items like beach towels, hats, outwear, shoes, and more.

You cannot, however, bring the following on board in your checked luggage:

  • Firearms and ammunition, any kind of knife, sword, dagger, bullwhip or any other type of weapon
  • Homemade, precooked, or other perishable items
  • Bottle warmers
  • Sporting equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Illegal drugs (inclusive of medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana)
  • Coolers, except those carrying medications, baby food or items related to dietary constraints

Please note that Disney Cruise Line is not responsible for lost personal items.

What to Pack in Carry-On Luggage for a Disney Cruise

It’s important to keep any necessities you’ll need during the boarding process and throughout your first few hours onboard the ship with you in your carry-on cruise luggage. This means you’ll want to pack items such as medication, travel documents, credit cards and cash, and valuables in your carry-on bags, as it can take a few hours before your luggage shows up outside your stateroom door.

Even with your essentials in your carry-on luggage, cruise vacationers should always be cautious when carrying cash, credit cards, jewelry, cameras, personal electronics, and medications. Keep these items within reach until  you complete the check-in process and are on board. Then, you’ll be able to bring these important items to your stateroom and store them inside the safe.

Additionally, there are some items that you can bring on board, but they are subject to inspection:

  • Baby monitors
  • Humidifiers
  • Portable fans
  • Sleep machines
  • White noise machines

So, what happens if you pack a prohibited item in your luggage? Well, that item will be confiscated, and your luggage will likely be held up in the screening process — which means it may take a lot longer to get to your stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line Alcohol Rules

As you might imagine, there are rules about bringing alcohol on board your Disney Cruise — but it’s not totally prohibited.

First off, don’t pack alcohol in your checked luggage — it will be confiscated and result in delays on your luggage being delivered to your stateroom. You can, however, bring alcohol on board in your carry-on — up to 2 750-ml bottles of wine or sparkling wine or 6 12-oz. beers. You can enjoy these beverages in your stateroom. If you take a bottle of wine, you brought with you into a dining room, that’s fine, too — just note that you will be charged a $26 corkage fee.

Disney Cruise Line Luggage Limits

Packing for a cruise is a lot like packing for a flight — you are allowed a personal item (like a purse, fanny pack or backpack), a carry-on, and two pieces of checked luggage per person. You will receive luggage tags for the two pieces of checked luggage prior to your cruise.

Your carry-on cannot be larger than 22 inches high, 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep.

when will i get my disney cruise luggage tags

Hey, Mickey!

At the port, you will check your suitcases with porters, and keep your personal item and carry-on with you. Your suitcases will be delivered to your stateroom a few hours after you board. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • It will usually be an hour or two after you board before you can go to your stateroom. Keep this in mind when deciding on carry-ons. Do you need something to roll with you rather than a bag you have to carry around? Does everyone in your party NEED a carry-on, or can you get by with one?
  • Pack computers, tablets, and anything else fragile in a carry-on. You will also want to keep medications with you. If you are bringing alcohol on board in accordance with the Disney Cruise Line rules, it will need to be in your carry-on.
  • Many people pack swimsuits, cover-ups, and sunscreen in their carry-on, as the pools usually open shortly after you board, and you may not have your checked luggage yet.

Packing for your Disney Cruise shouldn’t be stressful — but it is important to follow the luggage rules, so that your trip gets off to a great start! One of the best tips we can give you for taking a Disney Cruise is to use a travel agent who specializes in Disney! They know the ins and outs of every cruise ship, and keep up with all the discounts and deals available for your trip — and their services are free to you. We have used Small World Vacations for years to book our Disney travel, and we recommend you use them, too!

Disney Cruise Luggage Policy – What You Need to Know

Sharing is caring!

One of the questions I get asked a lot is what is the Disney Cruise Luggage Policy.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion about this but the rules are pretty easy to understand.

First, we look at the Disney Cruise Contract which states that

“Each Guest is allowed to bring aboard the Vessel a reasonable amount of clothing and personal effects, not to exceed two (2) bags per person. Every piece of baggage must be distinctly labeled with the Guest’s name, Vessel’s name, stateroom number, and sailing date.”

disney cruise luggage policy

DCL doesn’t, unlike some cruise lines, say what the size or weight of the luggage should be. Princess Cruise Line has no restrictions at all, but for Norwegian Cruise Line, guests are limited to two pieces of checked luggage weighing up to 48 pounds each.

I know if you look this up online there are lots of sites saying that you are restricted to size and weight. But there is nothing I could find on the Disney website itself other than the limit to the 2 bags I show above.

From personal experience of many Disney cruises, I have never seen anyone challenged about the size, weight, or amount of luggage.

But I have seen guests with huge amounts of luggage!

But, Common Sense

Just because you can bring a suitcase weighing 80 pounds, doesn’t mean that you ought to.

Many people sailing on a Disney cruise are arriving at the port by airplane. So they are going to need to abide by all the airline restrictions about amount, size, weight, and prohibited items in carry-on and checked luggage.

However, if this isn’t a consideration for you as you are driving to the port, you should still use common sense to decide the amount of luggage that you need.

Carry-On Bags and Personal Items

There is no size or weight restriction for carry-on bags, but do remember that all items will be going through the x-ray machine.

Cruise Carry On Bag

Also, you will have your carry-on bags with you until your staterooms are ready which is usually around 1.30 pm. You do not want to be carrying too much around with you whilst you tour the ship and try and bluster your way through the buffet.

Always remember to keep essential items with you and do not pack them in checked luggage. Here is a basic list of what you should have in your carry-on bag.

  • Passport/Visa or government-issued ID
  • Cruise documents (boarding pass, cruise contract, etc.)
  • Travel insurance information
  • Emergency contact list
  • Credit cards and a small amount of local currency
  • Prescription medications in their original bottles
  • Basic first-aid items (band-aids, pain relievers, etc.)
  • Seasickness remedies (if prone to motion sickness)

There are other items I recommend, but these are the basics.

If you want a more comprehensive guide then go to How to Pack Your Carry on Like an Expert.

Prohibited Items and Safety Regulations

Disney Cruise Line has strict safety regulations, which include a list of prohibited items that you must not pack in your carry-on or checked luggage.

These prohibited items include:

  • Illegal drugs including marijuana
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Irons and bottle warmers
  • Certain electrical appliances

This is just a sample list and more items are not allowed on a Disney cruise ship. You can read more about this at:

What You Must Not Take on Your Disney Cruise

Violating these restrictions can lead to confiscation of items or even denial of boarding.

Next time you disembark your Disney cruise have a look at the table of items you will see in the luggage hall at the end – it is usually pretty full of items that have been confiscated and are waiting for their owners to pick them up!

Apple AirTag – The Essential Luggage Accessory

apple air tag deal

This is my new favorite travel essential.

For those of you new to AirTags it is Apple’s Bluetooth tracking device. You simply attach it to things you don’t want to lose, for example, keys, wallet, or luggage. You can then track it with an iPhone or iPad.

It is also potentially incredibly useful if an airline loses your luggage – you should be able to see its location.

Packing Tips and Checklists

When packing for a Disney Cruise, it’s imperative to include all travel essentials while following the luggage guidelines.

Efficient packing can enhance your cruise experience by ensuring you have everything you need while abiding by the luggage restrictions.

Essential Medications and Health Products

I make sure to pack all essential medications and health products in my carry-on bag .

It’s important to bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medications for the duration of the cruise, and I keep them in their original labeled containers to avoid any issues during security checks.

Additionally, carrying proof of prescriptions can be helpful.

Packing a small first-aid kit with items like band-aids, pain relievers, and seasickness remedies is also advisable. Here’s a checklist for quick reference:

  • Prescription medications (in original containers)
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Seasickness medication
  • First-aid items (band-aids, antiseptic wipes)
  • Hand sanitizer and travel-size toiletries

Frequently Asked Questions

Navigating Disney Cruise Line’s luggage policy can be simple once you know the essentials. I’ve compiled the most common inquiries to ensure a smooth embarkation process for your cruise.

disney wish for adults

What are the weight restrictions for luggage on Disney Cruise Line?

For checked luggage, there are no specific weight limits imposed by Disney Cruise Line. However, airlines often have weight restrictions, which I recommend checking before your flight to the port.

Can I take carry-on luggage on board a Disney cruise, and what are the size limits?

You can take carry-on bags and personal items such as purses (also Mickey Ears are encouraged). There are no posted size or weight restrictions for carry-on bags.

What is the maximum size allowed for checked luggage with Disney Cruise Line?

There is no maximum size regulated by Disney Cruise Line. However, if you are traveling by air you will have specific size and weight limits for your luggage so you need to check with your airline.

Are guests provided with Disney Cruise luggage tags for their bags?

In theory, yes!

Two or three weeks before sailing you should receive your luggage tags in the mail. There are two tags per person.

However, it often happens that these luggage tags aren’t received. I would say that most of the time in the past few years I have not received my luggage labels, even if I have booked my cruise well in advance.

Don’t worry if you don’t get your luggage labels either. Always make sure that you have your identification tags on your items, and then when you arrive at the port ask one of the porters for however many labels that you need.

Make sure that you have your stateroom number written on the label. The porters are always very good at checking that you have everything right.

Remember to tip them at least $1 per bag that you are checking in.

Also when you are overpacking your bag think about the porters and crew that will have to handle that for you – so don’t make it too heavy.

Are there any restrictions on bringing bottled water or other beverages in the carry-on luggage?

Guests are allowed to bring a limited amount of bottled water or non-alcoholic beverages in their carry-on luggage, as long as they are unopened and carried in a day bag that fits within the size limitations for carry-on items.

Coolers are permitted if they are no larger than 12 x 12 x 12 (30.5cm x 30.5cm x 30.5cm), and used as carry-on luggage only for storing medications, baby food, or nonperishable items related to dietary restrictions only.

Do not pack any beverages in your checked luggage.

What is the policy for carrying alcohol in carry-on luggage on a Disney Cruise?

Guests aged 21 and over may bring a maximum of 2 unopened bottles of wine or champagne (no larger than 750ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board in their carry-on luggage at the beginning of the voyage and each port visited.

Remember always to pack this in carry-on luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Luggage and Disney Cruise Line

If you’re headed out on a Disney Cruise Line sailing, you’re going to bring some personal belongings with you. Those belongings will have to be packed in some sort of bag, backpack, suitcase, duffle, or other container – in other words, luggage. Here’s everything you need to know about luggage and Disney Cruise Line.

Is there a limit to the number of bags I’m allowed to bring on my Disney Cruise Line sailing?

The limit is theoretically two bags per person (Disney provides each guest with two luggage tags), but in practice this is much more loosey-goosey than bringing bags onto an airplane.

If you try to bring a dozen bags onboard the ship, then someone might notice, but if you brought two checked-bag-size suitcases, plus a carry-on-size roller bag, plus a purse, plus a backpack, no one would particularly know or care. Your real issue with bringing that much stuff would be storing everything in your stateroom, rather than being denied boarding.

Guests with small children will sometimes bring their full allotment of suitcases plus a case of something like diapers and DCL has no problem with this.

Are there size limits to the bags I’m allowed to bring on board?

There are no stated size limits for bags that porters bring onto the ship for you. Again, you should keep in mind the amount of storage space in a DCL stateroom, but the exact dimensions of a checked bag don’t matter too much.

There are size limits for bags that you carry on to the ship yourself. Any bag that you carry on yourself will be x-ray scanned, just like at an airport. The maximum size allowed to fit into the scanner is 22″ high, 14″ wide, and 9″ deep. (I’ve personally found that there is some fudge room on the depth if you have an odd-shaped tote or backpack, but those are DCL’s stated rules so your mileage may vary.)

DCL mailed me luggage tags. What do I do with them?

If you’ve booked your sailing more than about five weeks in advance, DCL will send you a small folder in the mail that includes some basic information about your sailing as well as two luggage tags per person in your sailing party. They look similar to the tag an airline uses to identify your bag when you’re flying, but they will be printed with the DCL logo, your name, your ship’s name, your sail date, your reservation number, and some bar codes.

These tags should be affixed to the handle of your luggage on the morning of your sailing. If you’re flying to your embarkation port, you should avoid putting the DCL tags on your bags prior to your flight. They could unnecessarily confuse your airline.

when will i get my disney cruise luggage tags

The tags are used to identify you bags as they make their way from the porters, onto the ship, and as they’re sorted and delivered to your stateroom.

Help! I didn’t get luggage tags in the mail. What do I do?

Don’t worry. Guests who booked their sailing late, who have moved just prior to sailing, or who are traveling in the weeks prior to their cruise may not receive their luggage tags. If you didn’t get luggage tags, or if you’ve lost your luggage tags, simply tell this to the porters near the ship on embarkation day. They have a stash of blank tags and will hand write you a replacement.

Do I have to “check in” my DCL luggage?

It depends on the size of your bags. If you’re on a short 3 or 4 night sailing, you may not be bringing much on board with you. If you only have a small amount of luggage and it all fits in the port scanner, then you’re not required to check anything.

Can I check in all my DCL luggage?

I mean, you could, but I would advise against this. First, you should NEVER have several key items out of your possession when you travel. These include things like boarding documents, ID items such as passports or birth certificates, prescription medications, electronics, jewelry, a child’s main “lovey” or comfort item, and anything else that would difficult or expensive to replace.

For DCL travel, you should also keep with you any item that you might need for your first half day on the ship. You could board as early as 11:00 a.m. and your luggage might not be delivered to your stateroom until 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. Think about what you might need during that period – A change of clothes? A swimsuit? Child care items? Those should be in a bag that you hand-carry onto the ship yourself.

If I bring all that stuff onto the ship with me, will I have to carry it around all day?

Not all day, but depending on what time you board the ship, you might have to tote it around with you for a few hours.

You will have to keep anything you bring on board yourself with you until your staterooms opens. This time varies a bit by port and itinerary, but you can typically expect that you will have access to your cabin between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. So, bring everything on board with you that’s mission critical, but not so much that you couldn’t cart it around yourself for a couple of hours.

I’m only bringing carry-on luggage to the ship, do I need to use the luggage tags?

Not necessarily.

If you’re on a short cruise and only have, say, a small backpack or purse and a carry-on size roller bag, you’re allowed to keep these with you and bring them aboard the ship yourself. Since the bags will never be out of your possession, you’re not required to tag them. That said, you may want to do it anyway. Let’s say you and your roller bag stop to eat lunch at Cabana’s before your stateroom is ready. You finish your food and head off to explore more of the ship and, oops, you forgot to bring your suitcase with you. (This happens more than you think.) If your bag is tagged with your name and  stateroom number, you’ll be able to recover it more quickly than if it is unlabeled.

Anything else I should know about carry-on bags?

I mentioned things that you should carry on yourself, but DCL also has a list of things you must carry on yourself. Chief among these items are any food or beverage. You may bring sealed, packaged food and non-alcoholic drinks, as well a limited quantity of alcoholic beverages, with you onto the ship. These are only allowed as carry-on items. So, yes, you can bring a case of water or soda with you, but you’ll have to tote it around the ship yourself until your stateroom is ready. (It’s fine if you put a case of water, for example, in a roller suitcase, but it has to be a carry-on size bag that you transport onto the ship yourself.)

What exactly happens with my bags at the port on embarkation day? Talk me through the process.

OK – Let’s assume that you are in possession of all your own luggage when you arrive at the port. This will be the case if you drive yourself to the port or if you arrive via rideshare (Uber/Lyft/taxi) or limo. In this situation:

  • Pull up to the port and look for signs that say “Baggage Drop-Off”
  • There will be porters there who will make sure your bags have luggage tags and ask you a few basic questions (Are you sure your boarding documents are not in the bag you’re about to drop off, for example.)
  • Give the bags you’re checking-in to one of the porters. (In the photo below, the porters are in red shirts.)
  • Tip your porter (see below).
  • Go park your car (if you have one) and then head toward the port building to show your cruise documents and board the ship.
  • The next time you’ll see your checked luggage is when your stateroom host delivers it to the hallway outside your stateroom sometime during the late afternoon.

when will i get my disney cruise luggage tags

If you’re arriving at the port via a Disney bus (from the airport or a WDW hotel), DCL staff will take your checked bags from the bus to the ship, allowing you to bypass the steps with the porters.

Do I need to tip the porter who takes my bag at embarkation?

No one is forcing you to do this, but it is customary. If you have one or two bags, a standard tip is about $5.00. If you have three or four bags, tip about $10.00. Anything more merits a $20.00 tip.

Is larger luggage screened at the port?

Yes. All luggage is x-ray scanned at the port. Smaller bags that you bring on board yourself go through a small scanner similar to what you’d see at a TSA checkpoint at the airport. Larger bags are scanned in larger machines behind the scenes.

You and your possessions will also be scanned as you re-embark the ship at every port.

What are they looking for during luggage screening?

The things that you’d think would be prohibited are prohibited – weapons and illegal drugs are not allowed on the ship. If you attempt to bring them on, you run the very real risk of being denied boarding and possibly being referred to legal authorities. Also, anything with the potential to start a fire is not allowed on the ship. In addition to the most obvious prohibited items, there is a large list of otherwise benign items that are not permitted on a cruise ship. For more details, see our post on items you can’t bring on your Disney cruise .

On the other hand, you are able to bring some items onto the ship that would not be allowed on an airplane. For example, you’re able to bring a Costco-sized bottle of shampoo, or even a case of factory-sealed water bottles in your carry-on bag, neither of which would be allowed on an airplane. If you have any questions call DCL directly at (800) 951-3532 (US & CA) or have your travel agent do so on your behalf.

Where can I put my suitcases in my stateroom?

All DCL staterooms have at least two closets plus space under the bed where you can store suitcases. The distance from the stateroom floor to the underside of the bed is approximately 14 inches. meaning the most suitcases will be able to lie flat under the bed. The primary beds in most staterooms are queen-sized and can usually accommodate four suitcases underneath.

The closets in the staterooms vary in size depending on your stateroom type, but even the smallest closets will fit at least a carry-on size suitcase and more will fit at least one checked-size suitcase.

If I don’t want to bring lots of luggage, is there a place where I can do laundry on board the Disney ships?

Yes, every Disney Cruise Line vessel has laundry facilities available for guest use, as well as fee-based dry cleaning and pressing services. On sailings of a week or longer, you’ll find that the onboard laundry rooms are heavily used. See our complete FAQ on DCL Laundry for more information.

I made lots of purchases in port, is there a place on the ship where I can buy an extra suitcase?

The onboard gift shops typically carry one or two styles of suitcase in both carry-on and checked baggage sizes, as well as a few sizes and styles of tote bags. Prices change, but you can expect to pay somewhere in the ballpark of $150 to $200 for a wheeled suitcase.

Be aware that the ships have limited quantities of all merchandise. While this is unusual, they may sell out of suitcases.

Can I get help taking my luggage off the ship on disembarkation day?

Yes, depending on whether you elect to for standard debarkation or express walk-off debarkation. See our tips for debarkation day for more information.

I’m on back-to-back DCL sailings, what do I do with my luggage?

Lucky you! If you’re on two consecutive sailings of the same ship, you’ll be in one of two situations: staying in the same stateroom or moving to a different stateroom.

If you’re staying in the same stateroom, you can leave your belonging on the ship, unpacked, exactly where you want them to be for your second sailing. If you’re moving staterooms, you’ll have to pack your belonging into your suitcases. Your stateroom host can then arrange for them to be moved to your new cabin. You don’t have to take your luggage off the ship. In either case, be sure to communicate with your stateroom host so he or she understands your situation.

These are not DCL specific, but any time you travel you should take a photo of the exterior (and possibly the interior) of your suitcase. If your bag goes missing, this can help with recovery. I’m also a big fan of placing an Apple AirTag or other similar tracking devices in my suitcase when I travel.

If you’re traveling with several family members you may want to put a few everyone’s items in each suitcase, rather than putting all of one person’s items in a single case. In the unlikely event that one suitcase gets lost, no one would be fully without belongings.

One thought on “ Frequently Asked Questions About Luggage and Disney Cruise Line ”

Hi Erin, thanks for another great post about DCL. Re not being able to have bottles of water in your checked luggage at the ports, I was told by a porter at Port Canaveral last summer that bottles of water were OK in luggage checked with them. This summer, I had bottles of water and soda in my port checked luggage and again had no issues. I realize it is different at every port but water seems to be OK at Canaveral.

Cruising soon on the Fantasy. I have not received my luggage tags as yet. Staying at the Hyatt Orlando Airport prior to the cruise. I also have Disney Bus Transfers. Lets say that I do not receive my tags prior to flying to Orlando, where will I be able to get the tags? Will the Hyatt have them for me or will the Disney bus have them when I check in? First time Disney cruiser. Thank you

Can't you print them out?

They come in the mail. You can't print them like the RCI luggage tags.

ArthurUSCG

When you check in for the bus, DCL will be able to print them right there. DCL uses airline style luggage tags, so it's no big deal for them to print them out. In case anyone else finds this post, if your going directly to the port, the curb side porters will print them out as well.

Even without a bus transfer in a regular (non Disney-run) cruise terminal it was no problem to have the porters just write one up easily. We had our room number and confirmation email etc, but one of the mailers got lost and we didn’t have enough tags.  I think they just needed stateroom #, really.

12 Do’s & Don’ts for the Week Before Your Disney Cruise Line Cruise

when will i get my disney cruise luggage tags

It’s just a WEEK before you set sail on the Disney Cruise Line (DCL)! At this point, you’re likely in a fog and can only focus on hugging Mickey, getting some sun, and sipping on the cruise’s drink of the day. But, before you let your brain go cruising, hang in there as there are a few do’s and don’ts you’ll want to handle the week before you sail away.

1 – DO Check-In Online and Make Last Minutes Reservations

If this is your first time sailing with the DCL, you’ll be able to check in online anywhere from 30-40 days before your sail date, depending on your Castaway Cay Club Membership level. If you haven’t already, this is your last chance to make onboard reservations like fine dining at Palo or Remy, booking spa treatments with Senses Spa, and registering your child for the kids’ clubs so you don ‘t have to worry about doing that on the ship. It’s also time to book your Port Adventures (aka excursions). If you’re a week out and haven’t done this already, you need to do it pronto! Fingers crossed that the reservations and excursions you are hoping for will still be available, as many of them book up fast.

2 –  DON’T  Miss Out on Your Disney Character Call

Did you know that you can schedule a prerecorded Disney Character Call wishing you well on your DCL cruise? In your cruise portal online, visit “My Reservations” and select “Request Call” beside the Free Character Call header. You can select what phone number, day, and time you would like your Character Call. You can also select which character you would like to hear from on their list of 3-4 characters. This is such a fun way to get the family excited with a call from a Disney Character before you even set foot on the ship!

3 –  DO  Plan Your Port Arrival Time

During your online check-in, you will be prompted to select a time of arrival to board the ship. If it works with your port arrival plans, we’d recommend selecting the earliest time possible. The week before your cruise, you’ll want to be sure you know this time and make plans to arrive slightly earlier so you’ll be through security and ready to go at your allotted time. Be sure you know how you are getting to the port! Do you know where you are parking your car for the duration of the cruise if driving in? Are you traveling from Walt Disney World? Or are you flying in and catching transportation from the airport? However, if you plan to arrive, be sure all the details are ironed out the week before your sail date.

4 – DON’T Skip a Stop By the ATM

You’ll need to have small bills on hand before, during, and after your cruise. You’ll want to be able to tip those who are handling your luggage, for example, without having to ask them to break a $50. While many of us are used to swiping our cards wherever we go, we feel it’s smart to have small bills ready for your port excursions. Some port vendors may not have the ability to take anything but cash. Plus, there is so much credit card fraud these days that cash might be your best option when away from home.

5 –  DO  Purchase Disney Gear Before You Arrive

Once you board, you’ll find out right away that plenty of fun Disney gear is available on the ship! It’s super tempting to shop away, but keep in mind it is also a lot more expensive on the ship. If you don’t have time to get items like t-shirts, hats, bathing suits, etc., shipped to your home the week before your cruise, you can stop off at areas surrounding the port and do some shopping! Many of the Disney Ports have surrounding Walmart or Targets that have Disney gear for the whole family. Save yourself a little money and do the Disney shopping the week before your cruise.

6 –  DON’T  Overlook Carry-On Essentials

When you arrive at the port, you’ll check your luggage and won’t be able to access it until it shows up next to your stateroom later in the evening. This means you’ll need to plan for almost a whole day before you see your luggage! Each guest is welcome to bring a carry-on, whether a small bag or backpack. We’d recommend spending the week before your cruise focusing on what to pack in your carry-on. Essentials like medications, documents such as passports, cash, and other necessities should be put in this bag instead of in your larger luggage that gets checked. Just remember not to go overboard with packing your carry-on, as this is the bag you will have to carry with you until your stateroom is ready.

7 – DO Pack the FUN for Kids and Adults!

Yes, you’ll find loads of fun aboard the DCL – but don’t forget to pack some fun and interesting items for your kiddos (and for yourself) in the carry-ons. The carry-on can be used before you even arrive at the port in the plane or in the car. Keep the kids occupied with little toys or activity books. Once on board the ship, be sure you have their swimsuits packed in the carry-on if you plan to swim that first day before your luggage arrives in your stateroom. Adults – did you know the DCL allows you to pack alcohol for each guest 21 years of age and older? You are allowed two unopened bottles of wine or champagne (no larger than 750ml). Or, if you prefer beer – you can have a 6-pack no larger than 12 ounces instead of the wine or champagne. This alcohol must go in your carry-on, as it is not allowed to be checked with your luggage.

8 –  DON’T  Forget to Attach Luggage Tags

Before your cruise, the DCL will send you a package containing several luggage tags. While you are packing your carry-on bags, as mentioned above, this is also a great time to attach your luggage tags to all your bags. Even though you aren’t checking your carry-on bag, attach a luggage tag to this bag as well in case you misplace it somewhere. Attaching these luggage tags the week before your cruise beats having to attach them at the last minute or forgetting your luggage tags altogether!

9 –  DO  Have your Cruise Documents Ready

It’s the week before your cruise – all of your documents should be ready to roll! At this point, it would be too late to obtain a Passport, so hopefully, you’ve already checked that off your list if needed for your cruise destination. We’d recommend reviewing what documents are required one last time and double-checking that you have them ready. Be prepared to have them with you once you arrive at the port to board the ship.

10 –  DON’T  Ignore the DCL Navigator App

Some people want nothing to do with their phones once they hit the open sea! We totally understand and couldn’t agree more. At the same time, we still recommend downloading the DCL Navigator App the week before your cruise. It’s a free app that is extremely useful on board. Once you download the app, you’ll see there really isn’t anything for you to do – but once you get on the ship, the app comes to life! It works perfectly even with your phone in airplane mode. This will be a place for you to get a schedule of all onboard activities and even text other cruisers without needing Wi-Fi. Go ahead and download it now!

11 – DO Pre-Order the Photography Package

Get ready for LOTS of pictures! The DCL has photographers all over the ship, from the dining rooms to character meet and greets. They always seem to capture that perfect moment, too – making it easy to want to purchase several of the photos taken on board. Did you know you can save roughly 15% by ordering a Photography Package before you arrive? You must pre-order your package at least two days before your sail date to take advantage of the savings. There are several different packages available, so pick which one works best for you and your budget.

12 –  DON’T  Forget to Review the Ship & Port of Call

Being that you’re just a week away from the cruise, it’s easy to feel rushed and stressed as you pull everything together. Stop the overtime at work, laundry, and dog-sitting instructions for just a moment! Have a cruise preparedness night and sit down with the family to review the ship’s layout and what to expect at the Ports of Call. Even if you’ve done this before, the week before your cruise is an ideal refresher time. Answer the kids’ questions, select must-do experiences, and dream about the magical adventure that awaits just a week from now.

Let the final week countdown begin to your memorable Disney Cruise Line adventure!

I must be missing something. I can't find where on the website to go to print out luggage tags prior to the cruise.

I haven't cruised in a while, but I'm pretty sure they come mailed to your address before the cruise. https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/...Cruise Line provide, the mail prior to sailing . here is a link to the DCL website with info about it

Ya, we've always gotten them in the mail, but this time we booked pretty late. I thought I'd just take care of it in case there wasn't enough notice to get them in the mail.

Disney does not do printed luggage tags like some other lines do. As Shmoo said you can get them at the port if they do not arrive to your home in time.

What if you are staying at a Disney Resort the night before and bags are picked up from your room? This is our situation and we haven't received luggage tags. Not sure how it will work as my thought is we won't even see our bags at the port.

The only thing we print out is our disembarkation luggage tag label. That way we dont have to write our name, address, etc on a bunch of tags. We just put a sticker on each tag and done.

Disney World Changes How Guests Receive Luggage Tags

in Walt Disney World

disney luggage tags

Yet another change is coming in the New Year for Walt Disney World Resort Guests.

In 2020 and prior years, when Guests had a Disney World vacation package booked, they would be sent MagicBands in the mail, along with a fun luggage tag to match each band. For example, if you picked a pink MagicBand, you would also be sent a Daisy luggage tag. If you chose a blue MagicBand, you were sent a Donald Duck luggage tag, and so on.

Related: Disney Discontinues Complimentary MagicBands

Now, however, as Walt Disney World Resort discontinues complimentary MagicBands beginning in 2021 ( though they are still available for purchase come the New Year) , they are also no longer sending luggage tags via mail. The good news, though, is that Guests can still pick these items up at the front desk anytime they wish during their Walt Disney World vacation!

The official Disney announcements reads:

Beginning with arrivals on Jan. 1, 2021, there will be a change in how [Disney World Guests] receive Walt Disney Travel Company Magical Extras and Souvenir Luggage Tags. Starting Jan. 1, 2021, [Guests] can pick-up these items at the front desk anytime during their stay at their Walt Disney World Resort hotel. Please note this update is for Walt Disney World Resort hotel reservations only. [Guests] who have a Walt Disney Travel Company reservation at our Other Great Accommodations will continue to pick up their Magical Extras and Souvenir Luggage Tags at the Front Desk.
