The Explorer Tour may be our shortest cave tour, but it is by no means short on fun and excitement. Your guide will introduce you to the amazing world of caves, spending approximately 2 hours underground crawling past prehistoric bones, investigating our ancient cave formations and even squeezing into places like the warm-up and challenge squeezes (if you so choose of course!).

This is a great option for families with younger members, for large groups, team building or those who don’t have quite enough time for the Adventure Tour. We promise to give you an experience you won’t forget!

Liability Waivers

Liability waivers are an unfortunate but necessary part of any adventure activity. We recommend that you take the time before your tour, or even before your reservation, to thoroughly review this legal document.

Anyone participating in a Canmore Cave Tours activity must complete a liability waiver, including minors. In the case of minors, it is very important that a parent or guardian also reads and signs the waiver.

Once you have completed your booking, you will receive a link that will allow you to sign your waiver online. We have included a handy video to explain all of the components of the waiver and to ensure the process goes smoothly. Again, it is recommended to review the waiver prior to making your reservation and if you have any questions please contact us.

COMMON QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ADVENTURE AND EXPLORER TOURS?
  • IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE?
  • IS THERE A MAXIMUM SIZE?
  • WHAT IS INCLUDED AND WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
  • IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?
  • HOW HARD IS THE TOUR?
  • ARE THERE RATS OR BATS?
  • IS THIS TOUR SUITABLE FOR ME IF I'M PREGNANT?
  • WILL I NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER?

The Adventure Tour is a total of 6 hours long, 4 hours of which are spent underground. The Explorer Tour spends 2.5 of its total 4.5 hours underground. The main difference between the two is that the Adventure Tour includes an 18m rappel (no experience necessary) and the extra time allows us to explore more of the cave. Both tours are similar in difficulty and require a moderate level of fitness.

  • IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE? The minimum age for the Adventure Tour is 12 years. The minimum age for the Explorer Tour is 10 years.
  • IS THERE A MAXIMUM SIZE? Generally speaking, fitness is more of a concern than size. However, all participants must wear a safety harness which has a maximum waist size of 46" (116 cm) and a maximum leg size of 33" (84 cm). If you have any concerns about size please don't hesitate to contact us .

We provide all of the necessary caving equipment including coveralls, kneepads, gloves, helmet & headlamp, harness & safety lanyard, and backpack. The backpack will be shared by two people and will not go into the cave.

You will need to bring good footwear, warm clothing, a water bottle and a durable snack to keep your energy up in the cave. Cave friendly snacks are pocket-sized, are edible even if squished (you will probably sit on your snack at least once!) and include energy bars, candy bars, fruit leathers etc. Please avoid snacks that will potentially leave a mess in the cave like nuts and fruit. Also, if you will require medication during the tour it is a good idea to bring 2x what you would expect to use, just in case.

Footwear must be closed-toe and should have a sturdy tread. Hiking boots or shoes are best, but a sturdy running shoe will also work. Other options include rubber boots or winter boots (in the winter).

The cave is 5 degrees celsius, so warm clothing is recommended. Imagine what you would wear if you had to spend a few hours in a refrigerator. We recommend long pants, long sleeves, a warm sweater, hoodie or jacket. Synthetic fabrics are best as they will keep you warm even if you get wet.

Any cameras going into the cave will need to fit into your pockets. We do not allow backpacks in the cave. Small point-and-shoot cameras or smart phones are welcome but please keep in mind that the cave environment is not particularly friendly towards electronics. High humidity and dust can damage equipment, and screens can break if you accidentally sit on it. Electronics are brought at your own risk.

  • IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED? No, transportation is not provided. If you do not have your own vehicle we can arrange a taxi to the cave for you at an additional cost. You can use Canmore's public transit to get to our office.

The hike to the cave takes approximately 30-40 minutes and is uphill the whole way on a mountain trail. Most of our guests find this to be the hardest part of the day, but we do take lots of stops along the way to enjoy the scenery.

Once in the cave the pace is quite slow as we maneuver through the passages. This is not a flat walking tour. There are no handrails, walkways or fixed lighting. We climb, crawl, slide and wiggle our way around the cave so it is best to have a moderate level of fitness. Even more important though is your sense of adventure!

Rat's Nest Cave is named after the nests of Bushy-tailed Wood Rats found in the entrance. This species of super-cute rodents is native to the area and they use the cave as a home due to it's constantly warm temperatures and protection from predators. We rarely see the rats, and if we do there is usually just one.

Bat's are rarely seen at Rat's Nest Cave. The cave is not a hibernaculum (a place where bats hibernate through the winter). We usually only see the occasional bat in the summer as they are passing through the area.

Yes, but only up until the end of the first trimester (12 weeks).

It is always advisable to seek advice from your doctor when participating in activities like caving.

Yes, all participants will need to complete a liability waiver. We recommend you review the waiver before booking your tour. Once you have booked your tour you will receive a link to sign the waiver online . Any minors must have their waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian before participating on the tour.

Banff National Park

Cave and Basin National Historic Site

cave tours banff

The Cave and Basin National Historic Site: Where Banff National Park – and Canada’s National Park System — Began

Bring the family here to see where it all began. “Here” being the Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada, which commemorates where it all began in 1885 — the geographical birthplace of Canada’s National Park System.

In 1883 three railway workers discovered warm water springs on this site on the side of Sulphur Mountain above what would become the town of Banff, which led to the establishment of a reserve around the hot springs in 1885. Two years later the Canadian government made the area a national park – the country’s first. That park would go on and grow into what we know today as Banff National Park in Canada’s Rocky Mountains, encompassing Lake Louise to the north as well.

The Cave and Basin site marks the growth and development of Canada’s national parks with interactive displays, exhibits, and interpretive trails. Naturally-occurring, warm mineral springs can be found inside the cave, and outside in an emerald colored basin. The site also features:

  • the cave, including its interior pool and the original vent hole.
  • the basin, the open air mineral pool with the mats of different color algae growing in the mineral-rich waters. Here you’ll also find the rare and endangered Banff springs snails in their ative habitat (please observe them but otherwise please leave them alone)
  • interactive exhibits
  • interpretive walks and boardwalks in the woods and marshes nearby
  • interpretive panels describing the World War 1 internment camp that was placed here
  • a gift shop and snack bar

Cave and Basin National Historic Site is located at the west end of Cave Avenue in Banff, Canada.

Winter Hours (October through mid-May): 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with a weekend guided tour 11 a.m. Closed December 25th

Canmore Cave Tours – One of the Best things to do near Banff

On our recent trip to Banff, we got to do one of those experiences you will never forget in your life. The boys and I headed to Canmore for the Canmore Cave Tours. Let me tell you that while this experience was a little out of our comfort zone, it was absolutely the most amazing experience of our lives. If you have even a slightly adventurous bone in your body head over to Canmore Cave Tours for one of the Best Things to do near Banff.

*This is a sponsored post in partnership with Banff & Lake Louise Tourism. Thank you for supporting GM.

Canmore Cave Tours - Things to do in Banff

Quick Facts – Kinds of Cave Tours

The Canmore Cave tours have two different types of tours. Let’s quickly break them down.

Explorer Tour –

The explorer tour is the more mild course. The tour is 4.5 hours long with about 2 hours inside the cave itself. The ages of the tour are for anyone 10 years and above. Check Current Price Here

Adventure tour

The adventure tour is the one we headed out on and it apparently is a bit more adventurous (I guess that’s how to put it). The tour itself is 6 hours long with 4 hours spent underground. The ages required for this tour is 12 years old and up.  Check Current Price Here

A Review of The Adventure Tour

The day starts off with a visit to the Canmore Cave Tours Office. There Camden, Owen & I met our fellow travelers and guides, Ryan & Omar. Our guides got us set up with the right equipment, jumpers, helmets, knee pads (those are a real lifesaver) gloves, repelling gear, plus a Clif bar and water for the tour.

What to Pack?

There are a few things you do need to bring on the tour, that Canmore Cave Tours does not provide. These are warm clothes (it is about 20-30 degrees cooler in the caves then outside) and some hiking boots. You can also bring along a hiking stick for the initial hike if needed.

Canmore Cave Tours

After our office visit, we all hopped in our own cars and headed about 10 minutes away to get ready to hike to the cave. The hike is actually a pretty decent hike and I recommend wearing 1-2 fewer layers on the hike as you will work up a bit of a sweat. On the hike, our guide Ryan showed us some fossils that were thousands of years old. In addition, you get to enjoy the amazing views that surround you when you are in the Canmore/Banff area. On the hike, we take a couple little pit stops for some water and also the last bathroom break (take it) as we are about to head into rats nest cave. At the top is a little campsite to pop on your gear and the guides make sure you are properly suited up.

**Pro Tip – Drink only half of your water so you don’t have to go to the bathroom while in the cave (there is nowhere to go) and then you have 1/2 remaining when done with the cave tour.

Canmore Cave Tours

Into the Rat’s Nest Cave we go:

First off, we never saw rats. There is one little critter that our cave tour knows about that is in this giant cave, but he is very shy so you are unlikely to see him. In addition, we say no other creatures or critters such as bats, or bears as there is a giant locked gate to get into the cave so there are no unpleasant surprises that enter the cave. which was definitely a concern of mine. One of the first things you have to do when you get in the cave is clip yourself onto some ropes and shimmy your way down to the first area of the cave. There you will see several bones of animals from thousands of years ago that were in this cave. After this little adventure is when the fun really begins.

Canmore Cave Tours - Bones

Repelling down the cave.

The first big task that will test your will is repelling down the cave. At first, I thought no big deal as our guide Ryan said it was 18 meters, then I quickly realized that he didn’t say feet and now knew it was 54 feet down I will be repelling into the cave. The guides are pros in getting us down and I felt super safe. One of the things I loved about the trip is the guides, they are constantly adding humor and several cave puns that made me chuckle (I can’t help it, I love a pun)

Optional Squeezes

The optional squeezes are definitely one of the more challenging aspects of the Canmore Cave Tours. You will find yourself in tight squeezes that you can’t possibly imagine. The guides are so great in both lightening the mood to not make us feel stressed about the squeezes and also reassuring us that we will make it through. On the last squeeze, I was exhausted (after 3.5 hours of caving) and opted out, but my boys pushed on and slipped and scurried through.

Canmore Cave Tours - Optional Squeezes

Non-Optional Squeeze (The laundry chute)

The Laundry Chute is the one pretty tight squeeze where everyone has to make it through on the adventure course. This was not so much tight as it was surprising. I don’t want to give away too many details as part of the fun is the surprise.

Best things to do near Banff - Canmore Cave Tours

30 Minutes of Teamwork

There is one part of the cave tour, where….. well let’s just say you are going to need to use some serious teamwork. This was one of my favorite parts of the tour. Once again I don’t want to give away too many details as it is more fun if it is a surprise, but it was my boys favorite part of the tour and was both exhilarating and somewhat frightening all at the same time.

Canmore Cave Tours - Into the Cave

Stalagmites Fossils & More

Throughout the cave, we found ourselves in rooms with incredible Stalagmites that were thousands of years old. Some rooms were small, and other rooms were large enough where the cave tour has actually held a concert. The cave offered some of the most unique beauty I have seen. Another highlight is when the guide took us down to where there was a pool of water (we never got wet). That cavern was covered in all sorts of beauty and the sounds it made as the water dripped into the pools was actually quite tranquil.

Best things to do near Banff - Canmore Cave Tours - Stalagmites

Climbing out of the Abyss

Finally, we had to make our way where we came from and head out of the abyss. There are definitely some challenging aspects to this part, especially since you are a bit tired, but there is no better feeling then seeing daylight. It was such an amazing adventure.

Canmore Cave Tours - Climbing in Banff

Overall review of Canmore Cave Tours

Overall, the cave tour is one of those experiences you’ll never forget. It was such a fun and incredible experience. The time I had with my boys as we were challenged and laughed will never be forgotten. The guides were extraordinary, to be able to take a group of people and challenge, entertain and make them all feel safe is a unique skill our guide Ryan possessed. One of our fellow travelers had done the explorer tour once before and said the other guide he had was just as good. So, if you are heading toward Banff or Canmore, book one of these cave tours. I promise you it will definitely be a highlight of your vacation. Check Current Prices Here!
