Boeing's Starliner launches its 1st astronaut-crewed flight after several delays

The crew aboard Starliner is planning to spend a week aboard the ISS.

Boeing’s Starliner capsule launched Wednesday its first astronaut-crewed flight into space to the International Space Station (ISS) after several delays.

The liftoff occurred at 10:52 a.m. ET from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Weather was 90% favorable to launch. Derrol Nail of NASA Communications said during a livestream that the team had been keeping an eye on the cumulus cloud forecast because if the rocket flies through cumulus clouds, it could create its own lightning strike.

About 15 minutes after the launch, the rocket separated from the spacecraft, allowing Starliner to fly on its own. At 11:24 a.m. ET, Boeing Space said Starliner had successfully reached stable orbit .

Starliner is designed to carry a seven-person crew, but aboard the "test drive" launch are NASA astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore, 61, a former U.S. Navy captain who will be commanding the flight, and Sunita Williams, 58, a former Navy service member who will be piloting the flight.

A team from United Launch Alliance (ULA), which manufactures and operates the rockets that launch spacecraft into orbit, began loading cryogenic propellant into the rocket before the planned liftoff early this morning in a sign of launch being all set to go.

Wilmore and Williams entered the capsule around 8:00 a.m. ET, taking their seats and performing a series of checks including communications checks and suit checks, according to a post on X from Boeing Space.

This flight will be Wilmore's third mission to the ISS, NASA said during its Wednesday livestream. Williams is also on her third flight to space and will be the first woman on a test flight in an orbital spacecraft, according to NASA.

After Starliner launches into orbit, it will be about a 24-hour journey to the ISS, during which the crew will test several flight objects, such as checking equipment, according to NASA .

Boeing Space said Wilmore and Williams will pilot Starline manually at certain points to prove it can, despite the spacecraft being able to operate autonomously.

Williams and Wilmore are expected to spend one week aboard the ISS and will be evaluating the spacecraft and its systems. Upon re-entry, the spacecraft will deploy parachutes and an airbag system, landing the pair in the western U.S.

It comes after the launch of Starliner was delayed several times. The crewed flight test was tentatively scheduled for May 6, but was scrubbed after a problem with an oxygen valve on the ULA rocket.

A new launch date had been set for May 25, but a small helium leak was discovered in the service module, which contains support systems and instruments for operating a spacecraft.

Another launch set for June 2 was scrubbed minutes before it was due to begin "due to the computer ground launch sequencer not loading into the correct operational configuration after proceeding into terminal count."

If the mission is successful, NASA could certify the spacecraft to perform routine missions to and from the ISS. NASA has primarily been using SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft to transport crew and cargo to the ISS.

The missions are part of the larger Commercial Crew Program at NASA, which uses American rockets and spacecraft to launch astronauts and cargo to the ISS with the hope of helping the federal space agency prepare for its upcoming moon and Mars missions.

Voyager 1’s Revival Offers Inspiration for Everyone on Earth

Instruments may fail, but humanity’s most distant sentinel will keep exploring, and inspiring us all

Amid April’s litany of bad news—war in Gaza, protests on American campuses, an impasse in Ukraine—a little uplift came for science buffs.

NASA has reestablished touch with Voyager 1 , the most distant thing built by our species, now hurtling through interstellar space far beyond the orbit of Pluto. The extraordinarily durable spacecraft had stopped transmitting data in November, but NASA engineers managed a very clever work-around, and it is sending data again. Now more than 15 billion miles away, Voyager 1 is the farthest human object, and continues to speed away from us at approximately 38,000 miles per hour.

Like an old car that continues to run, or an uncle blessed with an uncommonly long life, the robotic spacecraft is a super ager that goes on and on—and, in doing so, has captivated space buffs everywhere.

Launched on September 5, 1977, the one-ton Voyager 1 was meant to chart the outer solar system, in particular the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, and Saturn’s moon, Titan. Its twin, Voyager 2 , launched the same year, followed a different trajectory with a slightly different mission to explore the outer planets before heading to the solar system’s edge.

Those were NASA’s glory days. A few years earlier, NASA had successfully landed men on the moon—and won the space race for the U.S. NASA’s engineers were the envy of the world.

To get to Jupiter and Saturn, both Voyagers had to traverse the asteroid belt, which is full of rocks and debris orbiting the sun. They had to survive cosmic rays, intense radiation from Jupiter and other perils of space. But the two spacecraft made it without a hitch.

President Jimmy Carter held office when Voyager 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral; Elvis Presley had died just three weeks before; gas was about 60 cents a gallon; and, like now, the Middle East was in crisis, with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat trying to find peace.

Voyager 1 sent back spectacular photos of Jupiter and its giant red spot. It showed how dynamic the Jovian atmosphere was, with clouds and storms. It also took pictures of Jupiter’s moon Io, with its volcanoes, and Saturn’s moon Titan , which astronomers think has an atmosphere similar to the primordial Earth’s. The spacecraft discovered a thin ring around Jupiter and two new Jovian moons, which were named Thebe and Metis. On reaching Saturn, it discovered five new moons as well as a new ring.

And then Voyager 1 continued on its journey and sent images back from the edge of the solar system. Many of us remember the Pale Blue Dot , a haunting picture of the Earth it took on Feb 14, 1990, when it was a distance of 3.7 billion miles from the sun. The astronomer Carl Sagan wrote:

“There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

By then Voyager 1 had long outlived its planetary mission but kept faithfully calling home as it traveled beyond the solar system into the realm of the stars. By 2012 Voyager 1 had reached the heliosphere , the farthest edge of the solar system. There, it penetrated the heliopause, where the solar wind ends, stopped by particles coming from the interstellar medium, the vast space between the stars. (Astronomers know that the space between the stars is not totally empty but permeated by a rarefied gas .)

From Voyager 1, scientists learned that the heliopause is quite dynamic and first measured the magnetic field of the Milky Way beyond the solar system. And its instruments kept sending data as it traveled through the interstellar medium.

On hearing that Voyager 1 had gone dark, I had checked in with Louis Lanzerotti , a former Bell Labs planetary scientist who did the calibrations for the Voyager 1 spacecraft and was a principal investigator on many experiments. He told me that a NASA manager in the 1970s had doubted that the spacecraft’s mechanical scan platform, which pointed instruments at targets, and very thin solid state detectors, which took those edge of the solar system readings, on the spacecraft would survive. They not only survived but worked flawlessly for all this time, Lanzerotti said, providing excellent data for decades. He was overjoyed on hearing the news that Voyager 1 was still alive.

Voyager 1 instruments have power until 2025 . After that, they will shut off, one by one. But there is nothing to stop the spacecraft as it speeds away from us in the vast emptiness of space.

Thousands of years from now, maybe when the human race has left this planet, Voyager 1, the tiny little spacecraft that could, will still continue its inexorable journey to the stars.

Things are finally looking up for the Voyager 1 interstellar spacecraft

Two of the four science instruments aboard the Voyager 1 spacecraft are now returning usable data after months of transmitting only gibberish, NASA scientists have announced.

I was once sitting with my father while Googling how far away various things in the solar system are from Earth. He was looking for exact numbers, and very obviously grew more invested with each new figure I shouted out. I was thrilled. The moon? On average, 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away. The James Webb Space Telescope ? Bump that up to about a million miles (1,609,344 km) away. The sun? 93 million miles (149,668,992 km) away.  Neptune ? 2.8  billion  miles (4.5 billion km) away. "Well, wait until you hear about Voyager 1," I eventually said, assuming he was aware of what was coming. He was not.

"NASA's  Voyager 1  interstellar spacecraft actually isn't even in the solar system anymore," I announced. "Nope, it's more than 15 billion miles (24 billion km)  away from us  — and it's getting even farther as we speak." I can't quite remember his response, but I do indeed recall an expression of sheer disbelief. There were immediate inquiries about how that's even physically possible. There were bewildered laughs, different ways of saying "wow," and mostly, there was a contagious sense of awe. And just like that, a new Voyager 1 fan was born.

It is easy to see why Voyager 1 is among the most beloved robotic space explorers we have — and it is thus easy to understand why so many people felt a pang to their hearts several months ago, when Voyager 1 stopped talking to us.

For reasons unknown at the time, this spacecraft began sending back gibberish in place of the neatly organized and data-rich 0's and 1's it had been providing since its  launch in 1977 . It was this classic computer language which allowed Voyager 1 to converse with its creators while earning the title of "farthest human made object." It's how the spacecraft relayed vital insight that led to the discovery of new Jovian moons and, thanks to this sort of binary podcast, scientists incredibly identified a new ring of Saturn and created the solar system's first and only "family portrait." This code, in essence, is crucial to Voyager 1's very being.

Plus, to make matters worse, the issue behind the glitch turned out to be associated with the craft's Flight Data System, which is literally the system that transmits information about Voyager 1's health so scientists can correct any issues that arise. Issues like this one. Furthermore, because of the spacecraft's immense distance from its operators on Earth, it takes about 22.5 hours for a transmission to reach the spacecraft, and then 22.5 hours to receive a transmission back. Alas, things weren't looking good for a while — for about five months, to be precise.

But then, on April 20, Voyager 1  finally phoned home  with legible 0's and legible 1's.

"The team had gathered early on a weekend morning to see whether telemetry would return," Bob Rasmussen, a member of the Voyager flight team, told Space.com. "It was nice to have everyone assembled in one place like this to share in the moment of learning that our efforts had been successful. Our cheer was both for the intrepid spacecraft and for the comradery that enabled its recovery."

And  then,  on May 22 , Voyager scientists released the welcome announcement that the spacecraft has successfully resumed returning science data from two of its four instruments, the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer instrument. They're now working on getting the other two, the cosmic ray subsystem and low energy charged particle instrument, back online as well. Though there technically are six other instruments onboard Voyager, those had been out of commission for some time.

The comeback

Rasmussen was actually a member of the Voyager team in the 1970s, having worked on the project as a computer engineer before leaving for other missions including  Cassini , which launched the spacecraft that taught us almost everything we currently know about Saturn. In 2022, however, he returned to Voyager because of a separate dilemma with the mission — and has remained on the team ever since.

"There are many of the original people who were there when Voyager launched, or even before, who were part of both the flight team and the science team," Linda Spilker, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory , who also worked on the Voyager mission, told Space.com in the This Week from Space podcast on the TWiT network. "It's a real tribute to Voyager — the longevity not only of the spacecraft, but of the people on the team."

To get Voyager 1 back online, in rather cinematic fashion, the team devised a complex workaround that prompted the FDS to send a copy of its memory back to Earth. Within that memory readout, operators managed to discover the crux of the problem — a corrupted code spanning a single chip — which was then remedied through another (honestly,  super interesting ) process to modify the code. On the day Voyager 1 finally spoke again, "you could have heard a pin drop in the room," Spilker said. "It was very silent. Everybody's looking at the screen, waiting and watching." 

Of course, Spilker also brought in some peanuts for the team to munch on — but not just any peanuts. Lucky peanuts. 

It's a longstanding tradition at JPL to have a peanut feast before major mission events like launches, milestones and, well, the possible resurrection of Voyager 1. It  began  in the 1960s, when the agency was trying to launch the Ranger 7 mission that was meant to take pictures of and collect data about the moon's surface. Rangers 1 through 6 had all failed, so Ranger 7 was a big deal. As such, the mission's trajectory engineer, Dick Wallace, brought lots of peanuts for the team to nibble on and relax. Sure enough, Ranger 7 was a success and, as Wallace once said, "the rest is history." 

Voyager 1 needed some of those positive snacky vibes. 

"It'd been five months since we'd had any information," Spilker explained. So, in this room of silence besides peanut-eating-noises, Voyager 1 operators sat at their respective system screens, waiting. 

"All of a sudden it started to populate — the data," Spilker said. That's when the programmers who had been staring at those screens in anticipation leapt out of their seats and began to cheer: "They were the happiest people in the room, I think, and there was just a sense of joy that we had Voyager 1 back."

Eventually, Rasmussen says the team was able to conclude that the failure probably occurred due to a combination of aging and radiation damage by which energetic particles in space bombarded the craft. This is also why he believes it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see a similar failure occur in the future, seeing as Voyager 1 is still roaming beyond the distant boundaries of our stellar neighborhood just like its spacecraft twin,  Voyager 2 .

To be sure, the spacecraft isn't fully fixed yet — but it's lovely to know things are finally looking up, especially with the recent news that some of its science instruments are back on track. And, at the very least, Rasmussen assures that nothing the team has learned so far has been alarming. "We're confident that we understand the problem well," he said, "and we remain optimistic about getting everything back to normal — but we also expect this won't be the last."

In fact, as Rasmussen explains, Voyager 1 operators first became optimistic about the situation just after the root cause of the glitch had been determined with certainty. He also emphasizes that the team's spirits were never down. "We knew from indirect evidence that we had a spacecraft that was mostly healthy," he said. "Saying goodbye was not on our minds."

"Rather," he continued, "we wanted to push toward a solution as quickly as possible so other matters on board that had been neglected for months could be addressed. We're now calmly moving toward that goal."

The future of Voyager's voyage

It can't be ignored that, over the last few months, there has been an air of anxiety and fear across the public sphere that Voyager 1 was slowly moving toward sending us its final 0 and final 1. Headlines all over the internet, one written by  myself included , have carried clear, negative weight. I think it's because even if Voyager 2 could technically carry the interstellar torch post-Voyager 1, the prospect of losing Voyager 1 felt like the prospect of losing a piece of history. 

"We've crossed this boundary called the heliopause," Spilker explained of the Voyagers. "Voyager 1 crossed this boundary in 2012; Voyager 2 crossed it in 2018 — and, since that time, were the first spacecraft ever to make direct measurements of the interstellar medium." That medium basically refers to material that fills the space between stars. In this case, that's the space between other stars and our sun, which, though we don't always think of it as one, is simply another star in the universe. A drop in the cosmic ocean.

"JPL started building the two Voyager spacecraft in 1972," Spilker explained. "For context, that was only three years after we had the first human walk on the moon — and the reason we started that early is that we had this rare alignment of the planets that happens once every  176 years ." It was this alignment that could promise the spacecraft checkpoints across the solar system, including at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Those checkpoints were important for the Voyagers in particular. Alongside planetary visits come gravity assists, and gravity assists can help fling stuff within the solar system — and, now we know, beyond.

As the first humanmade object to leave the solar system, as a relic of America's early space program, and as a testament to how robust even decades-old technology can be, Voyager 1 has carved out the kind of legacy usually reserved for remarkable things lost to time.

"Our scientists are eager to see what they’ve been missing," Rasmussen remarked. "Everyone on the team is self-motivated by their commitment to this unique and important project. That's where the real pressure comes from." 

Still, in terms of energy, the team's approach has been clinical and determined.

"No one was ever especially excited or depressed," he said. "We're confident that we can get back to business as usual soon, but we also know that we're dealing with an aging spacecraft that is bound to have trouble again in the future. That's just a fact of life on this mission, so not worth getting worked up about."

Nonetheless, I imagine it's always a delight for Voyager 1's engineers to remember this robotic explorer occupies curious minds around the globe. (Including my dad's mind now, thanks to me and Google.)

As Rasmussen puts it: "It's wonderful to know how much the world appreciates this mission."

The Fate of Voyager: Where Will NASA’s Iconic Space Probe Be in a Billion Years?

Within a billion years, NASA’s Voyager 1 probe will have made it to the opposite side of the Milky Way disk relative to the Sun. By the time it arrives, the Sun will have boiled off all the oceans on Earth, making it inhabitable. As a result, NASA might not be around to celebrate this remarkable milestone in the journey of one of its most iconic spacecraft.

Last month, I asked my brilliant undergraduate student at Harvard, Shokhruz Kakharov where the Voyager 1 spacecraft will be in a billion years. By using a detailed model for the mass distribution of the Milky Way galaxy, Shokhruz was able to plot the future orbit of Voyager relative to the Sun over billions of years. The results will be featured in a forthcoming peer-reviewed paper.

This may all sound academic and not anchored “down to Earth,” as the adults in the room often pretend to be. But the reason for my question was down to Earth. In fact, I wondered about this question because most stars formed billions of years before the Sun. Therefore, if Voyager’s-like rocketry was used on exoplanets more than a billion years ago, then the corresponding space probes might have reached the Solar system by now from anywhere within the Milky Way disk. We can observe these interstellar objects with our telescopes as they pass near Earth.

In particular, pairing an Earth-based telescope with the space-based Webb telescope, a million miles away, will allow us to localize precisely the trajectory of the objects and detect any non-gravitational acceleration that they display. It would also be extremely sensitive to the detection of trailing gases either as a result of cometary evaporation of natural ices or exhaust gases out of an engine. But even with no surrounding gas, the Webb telescope can measure the surface temperature and size of the objects based on the infrared flux that they emit. This would allow us to determine their reflectance of sunlight within the Earth-Sun separation as long as they are much bigger than Voyager.

However, on the size scale of Voyager, there is not enough sunlight reflected for our telescopes to detect these objects unless they arrive near Earth. Better still – if they were to collide with Earth, they would show up as interstellar meteors of unusual material strength and composition. Our next expedition to the site of the interstellar meteor, IM1, which collided with Earth on January 8, 2014 , and exhibited unusual material strength and composition , aims to find large pieces of that object and infer its origin.

Shokhruz and I calculated the Galactic orbits of all 5 probes launched so far by NASA to interstellar space, namely: Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11 and New Horizons . We also calculated the past trajectories of the two interstellar meteors, IM1 and IM2 , as well as the interstellar object `Oumuamua and the interstellar comet Borisov .

The fundamental question of whether any of the interstellar objects detected near Earth is artificial in origin will be better answered as more of them are discovered. The most promising path for increasing the current sample of interstellar objects is with the Rubin Observatory in Chile which within a year will survey the Southern sky every 4 days with a 3.2-billion-pixel camera that just arrived a week ago at the observatory . With its unprecedented sensitivity, the Rubin Observatory might find an interstellar object every few months. With my postdoc, Richard Cloete, we are developing the software needed to analyze the Rubin data. By tracing the orbits of interstellar objects and observing them with other telescopes, we hope to identify their likely origin and figure out the nature of the environment that gave birth to them.

For the same reasons that humans might not be around on Earth when Voyager arrives at the opposite side of the Milky Way, the senders of any interstellar probes may not be around on their exoplanet because of the evolution of their older star when we receive these packages in our mailbox near Earth. Even if these technological objects stopped functioning a long while ago, their existence would imply that there used to be other intelligent residents of the Milky Way. Their trash is our treasure. Learning about their state of mind from what they left behind is equivalent to studying ancient civilizations on Earth that do not exist anymore based on the relics we recover in archaeological sites.

In a recent public appearance, I was asked what I envision for humanity’s future. I explained that humans arrogantly believe that they are important actors on the cosmic stage. But the truth is that even on the provincial stage of Earth, life survived huge catastrophes long before humans came to the scene, including a global warming event 252 million years ago that wiped out 96% of all marine species.

Could UAP Have Kinship to Our AI Systems?

This gives hope that, in the grand scheme of things, life on Earth will also survive the environmental catastrophes triggered by humans. Another way to put it is that microbes are more resilient than humans. In a billion years, human existence might be a minor footnote on the cosmic playbook. To get a more balanced perspective, we must search for other actors on the cosmic stage and learn from them.  And if none of them survived, we can study their history based on the artifacts they left behind.

We are not in a position to claim a major role in cosmic history. But the good news is that we can figure out what happened on the cosmic stage and find pleasure in the fact that our own Voyager will reach the other side of the Milky Way relative to the Sun in a billion years. Isn’t this accomplishment breathtaking?

Yes, we are short-lived, meter-scale creatures with major physical limitations, but we are so ambitious and fearless that we can send our message in a bottle to the other side of the Milky Way, 50 thousand light-years away, within a billion years.

Avi Loeb is the head of the Galileo Project, founding director of Harvard University’s – Black Hole Initiative, director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and the former chair of the astronomy department at Harvard University (2011-2020). Dusky Sound

Originally named by Captain Cook as he sailed by around dusk during his 1770 voyage to the area, Dusky Sound is home to one of the area’s largest fjords.

If you are cruising during the rainy season, you will luckily get to witness hundreds of waterfalls gushing down from the green hills above. Keep an eye out for sleeping seals on Dusky Sound’s Seal Rock and Astronomer’s Point — a historic observatory dating back to 1773 overlooking the dramatic fjord.

Doubtful Sound

Frequently referred to as the “Sound of Silence” , Doubtful Sound is a classic cruise-by sight on New Zealand cruises. Similar to Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound was named by Captain James Hook who decided to not sail into the narrow inlet as it looked a bit tight.

Similar to other fiords in the area, Doubtful Sound features two distinct layers of water that won’t mix . While the top few meters contain fresh water, the remaining water underneath is salt water from the sea.

Look out for the Hall Arm, Browne Falls, and Helena Falls at Deep Cove on your New Zealand cruise. These towering waterfalls are particularly strong during the wetter months of the year. Also watch for the area’s natural wildlife including fur seals, penguins, and bottlenose dolphins .

New Zealand has definitely been on my bucketlist for so long and I didn’t really think of doing it with the idea of a cruise. But now that you’ve mentioned it, I’m definitely convinced. I love how theres a lot of choices. My favorites are Dusky and Doubtful Sounds.

I have never been on a cruise before and I wanted to go on one last year but unfortunately that did not happen. I would love to go on a cruise that stops at those tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean. I have been to New Zealand many times and taking a cruise to that beautiful country will be amazing.

I never thought that there would be lots of choices of cruise in New Zealand. But I should since New Zealand is an island country. I found all of them offer beautiful destinations and views. But I would like the ones that go to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The one that goes to the South Pacific Islands also interest me. It will be great to visit New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, and the Cook Island.

New Zealand is on my dream list. I did not consider a cruise option yet. But it seems like an interesting attraction. I did not even know that there are so many possibilities and such a wide selection of cruises. It’s great that you have prepared such a detailed post with so many tips! Fantastic advice here on cruises around New Zealand. To be frank, I haven’t done a cruise and I havent been to this part of the world, so I wouldn’t really know where to start. I think I would prefer to do New Zealand for weeks with a campervan so if I was to do a cruise which included Auckland, I would have to combine it with other Pacific islands like Fiji and Bora Bora. The majority of cruise lines visit New Zealand during the October – April summer cruise season. A shorter winter cruise season also runs from April – July. Most of the world's major cruise companies offer cruise services to New Zealand. In a typical year, more than 25 different ships visit New Zealand's coast. Cruises between Australia and New Zealand offer the opportunity to travel the length of both North and South Islands. Most depart from Auckland in New Zealand, or Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane in Australia. Typically they visit New Zealand destinations including the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Fiordland. The Marlborough Sounds and Stewart Island are also popular ports of call.

Round the world

Round the world cruises visit New Zealand from all over the globe. These cruises can take as long as 150 nights, with some liners spending two weeks or more travelling the length of New Zealand and others spending shorter periods visiting just one or two ports. Some shorter ‘round the world cruises’ visit just a few countries – the USA, Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, for example. Round the world cruises are often sold in sections, for those passengers who don’t want to take the entire trip.

Expedition cruises mix visits to large ports with scenic visits to less-frequented locations that many large cruise liners do not visit. Port Auckland cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Auckland, New Zealand. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Auckland is the turnaround cruise port of New Zealand. Since ships docking here are also being re-provisioned, the port's exchange role makes it of crucial importance for the country's and the city's economy.

Port Auckland

Port Auckland is located in Waitemata Harbour. It is managed by the Council-owned company Ports of Auckland Ltd. It manages Greater Auckland's commercial cargo and cruise ship facilities, but not the ferry terminals and the yacht marinas.

The port has 2 harbours (excluding the ferry terminals) - the container port (Auckland City) and the port in Onehunga. Wiri Inland Port (in Wiri, South Auckland) has terminals that serving NZ's reshipment (quick turnaround cargo shipping) trade linking the seaport with the country's road and rail freight networks.

Auckland is a major containership port located on the central-eastern waterfront. The port covers an area of 0,55 km2 / 0,21 mi2 of wharves and storage facilities (mainly for TEU-containers and cars). All the land is reclaimed (from the former Commercial, Official and Mechanics bays).

• Wynyard Wharf (aka Western Reclamation) is used for chemicals and liquids storage.
• Princes Wharf (Overseas Passenger Terminal/cruise terminal and residential development) provides cruise ship berthing.
• Queens Wharf is the proposed location for a new cruise terminal.

The other freight wharves are named Captain Cook, Marsden, Bledisloe, Jellicoe (alternative dock for large-sized cruise vessels), Freyberg, Fergusson.

In 2006, Ports of Auckland Ltd (management company) bought for NZD 27 million 3x new large dockside gantry cranes (for TEU-containers) from Zhenhua Port Machinery Co (China). The new cranes were installed at Axis Intermodal Terminal (Fergusson Wharf), in addition to 2x older cranes (2001-bought). The new gantry cranes are NZ's largest - each with weight 1250 tons, height 103 m (338 ft), boom length 56 m (184 ft) and lifting capacity 2x TEU-containers (at once) with speeds of up to 150 mph. The new cranes serve Post-Panamax vessels and in case of power failure provide emergency electricity to reefers (refrigerated containers).

The port handles annually around 1600 vessels, ranking it NZ's largest commercial port with over NZD 20 billion in shipped goods per year, It handles around 60% of the country's imports and 40% of the exports. Its annual container capacity is around 780,000 TEUs. The annual number of imported second-hand cars is around 166,000 (mainly Japanese models).

In late-December 2017, the port authority company (POAL) announced its plans for building shore power infrastructure (estimated project cost NZD 18,3 million). Shore-to-ship power supply reduces significantly the number of emissions generated by visiting vessels. The technology allows docked cruise vessels to shut down completely their diesel engines and connect to the city's electrical grid for all the onboard electrical power while berthed. The annual volume of reduced greenhouse gas emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) was estimated at around 31%.

In mid-August 2020, ​Ports of Auckland (management/authority company) was granted consent for deepening the shipping channel from 12,5 m (40 ft) to 14-14,2 m (46 ft). The channel dredging will allow larger (New Panamax) container ships to enter Port Auckland. These vessels have max draft 15 m (50 ft) when fully loaded.

Auckland cruise port

Port Auckland's cruising industry is a large contributor to the city economy. Each ship call brings in about NZD 1 million from passenger spending. For 2010 was estimated that the region received over NZD 177,4 million from direct expenditure by arriving passengers and crew. Each cruise passenger to NZ injects into the country’s economy ~NZD 1700. In 2010, New Zealand was ranked as the 4th largest international passenger cruising market - following Australia, UK, and the USA.

(statistics) during season 1996-1997 the port handled only 27 ship calls and around 19400 passengers.

(statistics) in the season 2005-2006, the port handled 48 cruise ship calls with over 100,000 passengers.

In March 2010, the world's second- largest cruise company - Royal Caribbean (RCCL) - announced its decision to open a dedicated office in NZ catering to the increasing numbers of local residents taking cruise ship travel vacations. RCCL acquired part of the Auckland-based travel agency "Cruise Vacations", which served its brand lines since 1990. Since April 2010, the NZ office is overseen by "Royal Caribbean Cruises Australia" and supports all operations for the RCCL's 3 brands - RCI, Celebrity, and Azamara. RCCL opened its Sydney-based office in December 2008.

During season 2010-2011, a total of 87 cruise ships visited Auckland, carrying 138,200 passengers and 56,400 crew, bringing around NZD 305 million into NZ's economy, plus around NZD 177 million into Auckland.

During season 2011-2012, the cruise port handled a total of 97 ship calls from 30 different vessels, over 200,000 passengers and 88,000 crew. Those injected NZD 346 million into the country's economy and provided over 5600 full-time jobs. Compared to the 2009-2010 season (109,951 passengers, over NZD 191 million to GDP) this was an increase of 81%.

(statistics 2014) the cruise port contributed USD 190 million to the local economy, with 115 ship calls and handling 188,500 passengers plus 75,000 crew.

According to CLIA, 2015 was a record year for NZ's cruising market. A total of 66152 local residents booked a ship cruise, which was a 10% increase over 2014. The statistics showed NZ as the 3rd international cruise market with a record double-digit increase in 2015 (preceded by China and Australia). The increase in NZ cruisers traveling to Australia was 71%, and to Asia - 64%. Over the period 2010-2015, the NZ's cruising market recorded an ~65% growth.

(statistics 2015) the cruise port reported a record passenger spending of about USD 484 million (port's worth USD 220 million to the local economy). This was an increase of 15% over the season 2014-2015 season. During season 2015-2016, Port Auckland had 105 cruise ship visits and served around 230,800 passengers.

Princess Cruises 2015-2016 itinerary program for the first time ever included a round-trip departure out of Auckland. The 9-night itinerary visited Melbourne, Burnie (Tasmania) , Kangaroo Island , Port Lincoln and Portland (Victoria) , with prices starting from AUD 1200 pp (quad cabin). The cruise line's 2015-2016 program had scheduled more than 80 departures out of Australian ports ( Sydney , Brisbane , Melbourne ) and also from Auckland NZ.

In 2016, NZ's economy received a total of USD 484 million from the 249,000 cruise tourists. NZ's season 2016-2017 (September-April) ended with a total of 41 vessels (22 different companies) and 760 ship calls to 31 port- and island destinations. New Zealand's economy received over USD 490 million (across all regions).

In 2018, the port handled 113 ship calls and over 285,000 passengers. The number of cruise ship tourists to NZ (2017-2018 season) was estimated at around 280,000. For 2019, the cruise port had booked a total of 131 ship calls, with expected 322,000+ passengers (24% increase over 2018). Among season's highlights was the homeported Majestic Princess (port's largest liner so far). The 330-m, the 18-deck ship was launched in 2017 and has a max capacity of 4270 passengers plus 1350 crew.

In 2019, Stats NZ reported record levels of total cruise ship expenditure in New Zealand - NZD 569.8 million (~USD 363,5 million) to June 30, 2019, or an increase of 28% over 2018.

Cruise itineraries to and from Auckland New Zealand

Follows a list of destinations visited by cruise ships leaving out of Auckland:

World Cruises from Auckland are offered mostly as one-way segments from around the world itineraries by UK-based lines - like Cunard, P&O, Princess, Cruise Maritime). Full-length itineraries (eastbound or westbound) can be up to 110+ days round-trips starting from Southampton England ). On those, just like Australia, New Zealand is only a mid-itinerary destination offering one-way departures from Auckland back to Southampton (disembarkation port). The longest eastbound itineraries from Auckland generally include USA ports (including Hawaii, California, Florida, often New York) and feature Panama Canal transition and Transatlantic crossing to Europe (UK). Longest westbound itineraries include the Suez Canal transition and ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

With the constantly growing popularity of cruising vacations among New Zealanders, the "World Cruises" round-trip from Auckland is starting to appear on the market. Such a deal is the Sea Princess ship's 2017 world itinerary (104-days westbound, May 16 through August 29) visiting ports all over Europe (including Norway and Iceland), also Canada New England, USA and South America (through Panama Canal). Princess started to offer round-trip New Zealand to Hawaii itineraries that include stops in Australia, Western Samoa, the Hawaiian islands and French Polynesia (with overnights in Papeete (Tahiti Island) ).

Cruises around New Zealand leaving round-trip from Auckland (13-14-day itineraries) visit also Melbourne or Sydney as turnaround port, usually on the way back (second leg).

Cruise to Nowhere Auckland deals is on 3-day round-trip itineraries without any ports of call along the route. Generally, these are themed voyages with themes like "food and wine" (most common), also comedy, sports, wellness, music, etc. There are onboard pre-scheduled theme events and activities like parties, concerts, meetings, presentations, tastings, etc.

Short-break ("Mini Cruises") are round-trips visiting Napier (4-day eastbound) or Bay of Islands (4-day northbound).

One-way cruises to Sydney from Auckland are 14-15-days in length and often visit Tasmania and Melbourne before Sydney.

The "South Pacific Islands" group of itineraries offers round-trip voyages with duration 8-9-10-15-days. They visit ports in New Caledonia, Fiji, Vanuatu, Espiritu Santo, New Guinea, Tonga.

Repositioning cruises from New Zealand to Asia are mostly offered by luxury ships as segments of their around the world itineraries. They end up in either Singapore or Hong Kong and include ports in Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan. Longer segments may also include ports in China, Japan, and South Korea.

Repositioning cruises from New Zealand are between Auckland and the USA (via Hawaii) ending up in Honolulu or in California - Los Angeles , San Francisco or San Diego . Rarely, there are itineraries going all the way to Alaska ending in Vancouver BC (Canada) or Seattle WA (USA) .

Auckland cruise terminal

Auckland cruise port terminal is part of Waitemata Harbour. Liners berth right at the heart of the city.

Port Auckland's principal cruise terminal is at Princes Wharf. The second facility used for cruise vessels is Queens Wharf. There is approved funding for “Shed 10″ (Queens Wharf) upgrade. Upon completion, it will become the port's primary cruise berth.

Queens Wharf cruise terminal

In 2010 was made the decision the old Shed 10 (2-story historic building, former warehouse) on Queens Wharf to be rebuilt and refurbished as a modern cruise terminal. The project's interior designers were from Jasmax.

City Council spent over NZD 23 million on the new terminal. Refurbishment works started in 2012 and were completed in 2013. The new cruise ship terminal is equipped with Customs, lounge, processing/waiting area, and various service facilities. The building's ground floor is used for pax luggage, security and border agency processing. Queens Wharf is a popular public space also used for themed event space by locals and tourists.

In September 2016 started the building of a mooring structure at the end of Queen's Wharf. The "mooring dolphin" was sunk into the sea bed (off the wharf's end) to provide a mooring point for longer / larger cruise vessels without spending much more money on a wharf extension. The structure cost USD 10 million and was completed and usable for the season 2017-2018.

In 2017, the port was visited twice by its ever-largest vessel - RCI's Ovation of the Seas . During both visits, the 348-m liner had to be moored in Waitemata and its passengers ferried ashore via tenders. The new mooring dolphin (location 75 m / 246 ft off Queens Wharf's end) is used for berthing only of the  largest cruise liners .

In September 2018 were announced plans for a 90-m (295-ft) long mooring extension to be constructed off Queens Wharf. The 42 m (138 ft) long extension will be partially served by a gangway and will allow berthing for larger vessels - with LOA length up to 337 m (1105 ft). The new plan also includes the building of 2 mooring structures (48 m and 82 m dolphins) out from Queens Wharf. Walkway to the first mooring will be available to the public when liners are not docked. A smaller gangway will give port workers access to the 2nd structure. Once started, the project could be operational by summer 2020.

The ship arrival times (mentioned above) show Pilot boarding times. To those must be added approx 1 1/2 hour for docking alongside the berth. This means if the Pilot boarding time is 6:30 am, the ship should be berthed and tied up around 7:30 to 8 am.

• Passenger disembarkation starts ~ 30 min (varies by vessel) after the ship has berthed.
• Meeting arriving passengers - Princes Wharf's passenger exit is located outside Shed 21. Queens Wharf's best place to meet quests is between Ferry Terminal and Cloud (the adjacent wharf).
• Public access to the port's working areas and the docked ships are forbidden (restricted to port staff, crew, and passengers only).
• The only people allowed to board the docked vessel are its crew, embarking (cruise ship) passengers and pre-approved visitors.

The terminal has no luggage storage facility for disembarking passengers.

The nearest supermarket is Countdown (on 76 Quay Str).

The facilities at Auckland cruise terminal include MAF agency, customs, stevedores, tour information. The port is located close to the Auckland International Airport, the city highlights, and the business district.

Cruise ship terminal directions & parking

Exiting the airport turn left at first traffic lights (George Bolt Memorial Drive) and continue as the road runs into motorway route 20. Exit route 20 at the 2nd off-ramp to City and Nelson Str. Continue straight through the traffic lights at Nelson Str. and to the intersection of Nelson and Sturdee. Turn right into the left lane of Sturdee and at the 2nd street on the left turn in to Lower Hobson Str. Stay in the left lane and continue to the next set of traffic lights to the cruise terminal.

• Airbus Express leaves from the bus stop at Downtown Ferry Terminal. It takes ~ 45-60 min in each direction.
• Bus and train services are provided via Britomart Transport Centre, located across the street from Queens Wharf, and it's at ~ 5 min walking distance from Princes Wharf.
• Both cruise terminals have dedicated taxi ranks.
• Downtown Ferry Terminal (between both cruise ship wharves) is for ferry services to Devonport, West Harbour, Half Moon Bay, Pine Harbour, and Waiheke Island, plus various tour destinations.
• Queens Wharf and Princes Wharf are both public accessible. On-site traffic control gives directions for pick up / drop off zones. Both wharves don't offer public and long-term parking. Nearby located public parking facilities are the car parks Downtown, Viaduct and Britomart.
• The Red LINK bus line runs around Downtown and links Britomart Transport Centre, Queen Str, Karangahape Road and Wynyard Quarter. The bus is every 15 min (between 6.30 am - 11.30 pm).
• Green LINK bus line runs around the inner suburbs and major shopping areas. Among those are Parnell, Auckland Museum, Newmarket, Karangahape Road. The bus runs every 10 min (between 6.30 am - 8 pm).
• Orange LINK bus line runs the Green LINK routes plus Mt Eden, St Lukes Mall, MOTAT, Herne Bay. The bus runs every 15 min (between 6.30 am - 8 pm).
• Auckland Explorer Bus (hop on - hop off the bus stopping at Queens Wharf) circles around 14 of the city's main attractions.

Auckland port beside its passenger (cruise ship) terminal also has facilities to handle oil tankers and cargo ships (vehicle carriers, bulk carriers, and container vessels) and dry dock facilities for marine vessel refurbishments and repairs.

The Auckland cruise ship terminal doesn't provide shore-to-ship power (shore-side electricity supply) which could reduce significantly the levels of emissions, noise, and vibration in port. The port is accessible the whole year round - 24/7, 365 days a tear.

Cruise ships usually arrive in Auckland in the early morning (at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30 or 7:30 am) and depart from Auckland in the late afternoon or in the evening (at 4, 5, 6 or 7 pm).

The cruise terminal is at approx 14 mi / 22 km from Auckland International Airport, which is ~ 30-40 min drive distance.

The best vantage points to see ship arrivals/departures are public areas on both docking wharves, along with Quay Street (near Ferry Terminal), Fred Ambler Lookout, Gladstone Road, Mt Victoria, North Head, the Devonport Wharf, the East Coast Bay beaches.

• Waiheke Island: catch a ferry and after 35 minutes you will reach this charming island. Explore the historical Stony Batter, beautiful vineyards, relax at the beach or have a picnic.
• SKYCITY: this casino and entertainment complex is located in the city center. It has stunning architecture. It offers a wide range of entertainments and a lot of places for dining.
• Auckland Zoo: the largest animal collection in New Zealand. It is next to Western Springs Park, just 5 min away by car from the central part of the city. You will see more than 750 animals and 120 different species.
• Vineyards: you can just visit a vineyard or join a tour for wine tasting. Try the Turanga Estate in Whitford, the Soljans in Kumeu, the Stoneyridge on Waiheke Island and the Babich Wines in Henderson.

Auckland Cruise Port

Auckland port is the turnaround cruise port of New Zealand, which means that cruise ships start and end their cruise in Auckland.

Auckland cruise port is located at Waitemata Harbour. Cruise vessels dock at Shed 10, located on Queens Wharf (Auckland’s primary cruise berth), or sometimes at Princes Wharf , both extremely close to downtown (you just cross the street and within a 5-minute walk you’ll reach the heart of the city).

Auckland cruise terminal involves 5 minutes of walking on a flat surface with lots of stairs or an elevator available instead. Tourists with mobility issues or using a device can use elevators. The terminal building has two levels and features facilities including a tour information desk, the New Zealand Customs Service, check-in,  luggage storage, and an x-ray screening area. Toilets and local maps are provided on the first floor.

The port of Auckland is also a major containership and ferry port in New Zealand. The Downtown Ferry terminal is located on Auckland’s waterfront, right next to Auckland Cruise Ship Terminal.

Major cruise lines sailing from/to Auckland include Viking Ocean Cruises, Holland America Line, Silversea, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Azamara and Oceania Cruises.

Getting Around the Port of Auckland

• Upon exiting the cruise terminal, you will see Auckland Harbor surrounded by lots of restaurants where you can enjoy local sweets or a very tasty lunch.
• The harbor is full of incredible small ships, yachts, America’s Cup Race yachts, Regatta, and sailing ships. Close to the dock, you will find several city highlights such as The Winter Gardens (30 minutes walk), the Maritime Museum (10 minutes walk), the Sky Tower (20 minutes walk), the Art Gallery (15 minutes walk), and many others.
• The city offers an amazing dining and shopping experience with multiple shops, designer stores, restaurants, bars and choices for everyone. Auckland boasts a strong Maori and Polynesian heritage that provides the city with a unique cosmopolitan vibe and expect to meet a lot of different nationalities during your visit.
• You can also book an Auckland Hop on Hop off bus tour that includes stops at major attractions of Downtown Auckland.
• The downtown is partially flat, however, some streets have cobblestones. Please consider that the city is extremely crowded which might be challenging for guests with mobility difficulties.

10 Amazing Things to Do in Auckland Cruise Port

1. auckland harbour bridge.

The iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge is probably the most famous highlight of the city and a must-see attraction for first-timers. This spectacular eight-lane bridge is the second-longest road bridge in New Zealand stretching over 1 km/0.6 mile, offering  extraordinary 360-degree views of the vibrant city.

The bridge rises 43 meters/141 feet above high water, offering a unique photo opportunity you can’t miss! The bridge also offers bungee jumping facilities and a bridge climb with views of the city and the harbour. 

Driving time from the Auckland port to the Harbour Bridge is approximately 15-20 minutes each way, depending on the traffic. This activity is considered moderate to strenuous.

In case you book a climbing experience, no cameras, phones or any item can be carried on the bridge. Wet weather gear will be provided and the climb suits. There will be a third party making photos of you for an extra fee (cash only).

2. Fly over Auckland by Seaplane

Embark on a thrilling adventure and experience Auckland from a whole new perspective! Not only will you enjoy spectacular views of the heart of Auckland city but you will also have a unique opportunity to fly over Rangitoto Volcano, Auckland’s youngest volcano with breathtaking views of the crater!

You will fly over Motutapu Island to Waiheke Island, famous for its stunning beaches and wineries. Your flight is normally narrated so you’ll learn about the islands and Auckland’s history. On your return, you will pass by Motuihe Island (Te Motu-a-Ihenga) and Browns Island (Motukorea) before landing back at the harbor.

The flight base is located around a 15-minute drive away from the port but can also be reachable within walking distance – a very nice walk, however, keep in mind that the city is always crowded so you may reach the base faster on foot. Once you arrive at the flight base, a safety briefing will be provided before embarking on a seaplane. Try not to wear valuables or a backpack and travel as lightly as possible.

The seaplane experience lasts around 45 minutes and the flight itself is about 20 to 25 minutes, however, it may depend on the tour operator and tour description. You’ll get amazing photo opportunities during your flight so make sure you bring your camera !

3. 360-degree View from the Sky Tower

Are you looking to enjoy spectacular, 360-degree panoramic views of the city and the islands? Well, you should head to the iconic Sky Tower, a 328-meter (1,076 ft) tall telecommunications and observation tower and the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere! From its observation deck, you can admire the stunning views of the city and its popular attractions including the Hauraki Gulf (Tīkapa Moana) and the Great Barrier Island (on a sunny and clear day) which is about 60 miles away.

The Sky Tower is part of the SkyCity Auckland casino complex and consists of three main levels where you’ll find cafes, restaurants and “SkyJump”, a 192-meter (630 ft) jump from the observation deck.

Traveling time from the Auckland cruise port to the Sky Tower is approximately 30 minutes on foot, or a 10-minute drive depending on the traffic. The visit involves a minimum of walking, elevators can be used. Sky Tower is wheelchair accessible.

4. Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium

If you love penguins and want to explore the fascinating marine world, this is the place you shouldn’t miss once you reach Auckland! Named after New Zealand’s marine archaeologist and diver Kelly Tarlton, this amazing sea life aquarium is home to the world’s largest colony of aquatic Antarctica penguins and many other spectacular sea creatures.

Some of the main features include the Antarctic Encounter and the Underwater World, with numerous acrylic tunnels, exhibitions, shows, and a moving walkway with tons of fish and sharks swimming around and above you. Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium is located approximately a 15-minute drive from the dock.

5. Rangitoto Island

If you are interested in the rocky landscape that New Zealand has to offer, head over to the largest dormant volcano reaching a height of 260 m (850 ft), located right across Rangitoto Channel!

The island was created 600 years ago by volcano eruptions and is the youngest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field. Rangitoto Island is home to the world’s largest pohutukawa forest and the most popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of Auckland’s city center.

If you prefer an active holiday, you can hike up to the summit (approximately 1 hour each way) or take a land train to the top. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning and the experience is well worth it!

You can reach the island on a guided tour (any guided tour will take you to the rugged lava crops) or via regular ferries from Auckland harbour. A ferry ride takes around 30 minutes each way. To reach the Auckland Ferry Terminal from the dock you need to walk for at least 20 minutes.

6. Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Very few places in the world boast glowworm caves and New Zealand is one of them! The world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located around 192 km/119 miles southeast of Auckland and allow visitors to admire the entire stunning cave complex featuring incredible underground formations thousands of years old.

The glow worms illuminate the ancient caves like a constellation of stars and what makes this place so fascinating is that they don’t move or attack, they simply glow and produce an incredible light!

Traveling time from the Auckland port to Waitomo Caves is at least 2h 45 minutes each way. On a guided walking tour, you can learn about the cave system from a very knowledgeable guide and see the spectacular rock formations.

No photography is permitted inside the glowworm caves which makes the whole experience even more interesting. It’s very hard to describe in words how incredible the caves are in reality, and this experience is highly recommended!

Tips : Travel as lightly as possible, as it’s very warm inside the cave. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (be mindful of the slippery surfaces). The caves are not recommended for tourists who have claustrophobia or are afraid of the dark. Bring insect repellent and some local currency.

7. Waiheke Island 

Waiheke Island is the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand and is famous for its world-class wine, beautiful beaches (OneroaBeach, Palm Beach, Onetangi Beach…) and stunning views. Known as the “island of wine”, Waiheke Island offers a wide range of activities including winery and wine tasting tours, kayaking, zipline experience, and so much more!

Waiheke Island has a lot of breathtaking views of cliffs, fascinating rock channels, and hidden caves that offer splendid views of the ocean. One of the most popular activities is kayaking through Waiheke Island, however, keep in mind that this activity is considered very strenuous with extended periods of standing and paddling. The ferry drop-off point is located within walking distance of the kayak base station.

The island’s climate is favorable for growing Bordeaux-type grapes, though some Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc varieties are considered extremely good! Waiheke winegrowers regularly win awards and their wines rank among the best ones in the world.

If you are a wine lover, it’s highly recommended to book one of the wine-tasting tours where you get to learn about the winemaking process and the history of the region.

You can reach Waiheke Island by a 45-minute ferry ride from Auckland harbour. If you decide to do the zipline , you should know that from the ferry drop-off point is another 30-minute drive to the location where a safety briefing will be provided.

8. Hobbiton – Lord of the Rings 

If you are a fan of the epic “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, then the Hobbiton Movie Set is a must-see place! Get ready for a “precious” day in New Zealand’s charming countryside and visit the magical village of the Shire where some of the major scenes from these legendary movies were shot!

At the Hobbiton Movie Set, you can admire the same landscapes that you’ve seen in the movie, including lakes, rolling hills, and 44 permanently reconstructed Hobbit holes (exterior visit only, except for one hole that you can visit inside). You can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set on a 2-hour guided walking tour only, and all tours depart from the Shire’s Rest.

Hobbiton village is located 181 km/113 miles south of Auckland and it takes at least 2h30 minutes to reach it (each way). If your cruise ship docks at Tauranga , I suggest you book a tour from Tauranga as it takes around 1.5 hours each way.

9. Snowplanet

Snowplanet is a recreation center located 37 km/23 miles northwest of Auckland (a 35-minute drive) known for its indoor skiing and snowboarding facilities on artificial snow. The slope is around 200 meters long and fully covered with snow, a perfect place for families and those in search of winter vibes!

Snowplanet is a very popular and requested attraction where you can purchase a snow pass for unlimited skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. It’s suitable for all levels and ages. A restaurant and facilities are available on-site.

10. Maori Cultural Center – Te Hana

Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre is an ideal place if you are looking to learn about the fascinating history, culture and traditions of New Zealand. Located a 1h 15-minute drive north of Auckland, the Maori Cultural Center features various displays and exhibits on Maori arts and offers an immersive Maori cultural experience. Take a walk through the 17th-century Maori village, witness Maori ceremonies, tribal songs and dances, and delight in authentic Maori cuisine!

Traveling time from the Auckland pier to Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre is at least 1 hr 30 minutes each way, depending on the traffic.

Nothing beats the thrill of seeing a destination come into view from the water as you travel on board a cruise ship. The first glimpse you'll get of a destination as you come in to dock is its port, and while some can be unattractive, others are simply beautiful and will inspire you to explore the destination further. These ports often offer something special for the visitor, whether it’s their top-notch facilities, stunning and iconic scenery or proximity to the area's hustle and bustle. Here is a look at some of the best cruise ports and ports of call worldwide.

Piraeus port, Athens, Greece

This ancient city port has three harbours, making it the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Piraeus has religious and historic landmarks of its own, but Athens is only eight miles (13km) to the northeast and is easily accessible via a 30-minute metro ride or a 20- to 30-minute taxi ride. The port connects the peninsula with most Greek islands, and it’s the main stop for cruise ships touring the Aegean Sea. The port is reached by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL, Celebrity, Princess, Azamara, Silversea and Virgin Voyages.

Port of Singapore

The port of Singapore is one of the biggest in the world. There are two berthing facilities at the Singapore Cruise Centre and Marina Bay Cruise Centre, located next to the Marina South Pier. The port is close to attractions such as Sentosa Island, Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown and Marina Bay Sands. Singapore’s strategic location means the destination is often described as the gateway to southeast Asia. Some of the major cruise lines operating from there are Princess, Celebrity, Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Holland American Line (HAL) and Silversea.

Ports of Dubai, UAE

The glamorous emirate of Dubai remains a major port of embarkation and a call for cruise travellers on itineraries to destinations in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf. The city has two cruise ports, with two terminals in Port Rashid and two at the new Dubai Harbour, which opened in 2020. The latter have entertainment venues, leisure spaces and premium retail shopping areas. Dubai Harbour is directly linked with the city's transport network and monorail system and is visited by Carnival Corporation cruise line brands, while Port Rashid welcomes other major cruise lines.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal, New York City, New York, USA

Seeing the port of Manhattan from the water is arguably one of the most iconic sights to be had from a cruise ship. Passengers can take in the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and Governors Island. Manhattan Cruise Terminal is situated on the Hudson River on the city's west side in the Hell's Kitchen area. New York City has been serving cruise passengers longer than any other US city. From the port, it’s a taxi or subway ride into the city. Cruise lines berthing there include NCL, Cunard, Princess, P&O, Carnival, Oceania, Disney Cruise Line, Fred. Olsen and Viking.

Port of San Miguel de Cozumel, Mexico

San Miguel de Cozumel port is at the heart of this Mexican island and is surrounded by beautiful clear water, a coral reef and miles of beaches offering snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities soon after you disembark. The buzzing city of San Miguel is also a short walk away and has many seafront shops and restaurants. Visitors can walk along the sea wall, El Malecon, and head to the main square. If there is time, ancient Mayan ruins can be explored too. Many ships docking at this port head on to the Caribbean and some of the cruise lines stopping here include Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Marella, MSC and Princess.

Port of Cape Town, South Africa

The cruise terminal at the port of Cape Town is operated by the V&A Waterfront, a 304-acre neighbourhood with shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment options. On the approach to the port, passengers can view the scenic bay and harbour and the mountains beyond. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain to get a beautiful vista of the city that's within walking distance of the port. The major cruise lines heading to and from the port include Oceania, Seabourn, NCL, MSC and Regent Seven Seas.

Geirangerfjord Port, Norway

Cruise guests will enjoy magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord area as they head to the small cruise port. Lined by mountains and waterfalls, the fjord has a magical looking landscape and a very small village. Cruise lines offer excursions from the port, such as kayaking along the waterways, helicopter rides and hiking tours to amazing viewpoints like Eagle Bend and Dalsnibba mountain. Lines including Viking, Hurtigruten, Windstar, Silversea, HAL, Ponant, Celebrity and Cunard all have itineraries to the destination.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

Half Moon Cay is a 2,400-acre island retreat in the Bahamas, located 10 miles (16km) southeast of Nassau. The island is owned by Carnival Corporation and is therefore only a port of call for Carnival and Holland America Line, which use the island as part of their Caribbean and Panama Canal itineraries. The paradise island has facilities for families, couples and groups. There are beach cabanas, bars with thatched roofs and hammocks for relaxing days spent swimming and sunbathing. For more active pursuits scuba diving, snorkelling, jet-skiing, parasailing, glass-bottom boating, cycling and hiking are all part of the offering.

Port of Valletta, Malta

Cruise ships enter the Port of Valletta via the impressive and historic Grand Harbour, which extends for about two miles (3.6km) inland on the island of Malta. Passengers disembarking the ships at Valletta Cruise Port can head to the neighbouring historic Valletta harbour. The waterfront venue offers food, shopping and entertainment and some of the island's most impressive views and iconic ancient buildings. Malta is strategically positioned in the centre of the Mediterranean offering eastern and western itineraries and is visited by cruise lines such as Celebrity, Marella, P&O, Oceania, Fred. Olsen, Princess and HAL.

Port of Skala, Santorini, Greece

The journey to the Greek island of Santorini offers some of the most beautiful views from the Mediterranean Sea. On the approach to the old port, passengers are met with scenes of whitewashed villages with cobalt-blue cupolas set high on the cliffs. Santorini's capital, Fira, can be reached from the port by tender dock and then by cable car, or by walking up 580 or so steps. Santorini is often the most popular cruising destination of all the Greek isles and is visited by lines including Marella, Celestyal, HAL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Celebrity, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Port of Jeju, South Korea

Cruise passengers arriving at the port on the UNESCO-listed Jeju Island in South Korea have the opportunity to explore secluded beaches, underground lava tunnels, caves and waterfalls. Jeju city is one mile (2km) from the port. The island was once a honeymoon destination for South Korean couples and is also home to an adults-only theme park called Love Land, which features more than a hundred erotic sculptures. Quirky cruise itinerary excursions also take in the Teddy Bear Museum. Among the cruise lines stopping at the island are Celebrity, Princess, HAL, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania and Seabourn.

Port of Haifa, Israel

The Port of Haifa is directly linked with downtown Haifa and it only takes a few minutes to walk to the railway station, or around 15 minutes to walk to the city centre. Haifa is the third largest city in Israel and its main attraction is the Bahá’í World Centre and surrounding Bahá’í gardens. The National Museum, Mount Carmel national park, Israel National Museum of Science, Technology, and Space and the Haifa Museum of Art are also worth a visit. The port welcomes HAL, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Azamara, Princess Cruises and NCL, among other cruise lines.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port, Croatia

Dubrovnik's main cruise port is located around two miles (3km) away from the Old Town. Most of the cruise ships dock here although some moor in front of the old port, where visitors can then take a tender boat to shore. The old port has UNESCO World Heritage status and is one of the busiest and most beautiful cruise ports in Europe. Dubrovnik’s medieval walled town can be discovered on foot and offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. The port of call is reached by cruise lines including NCL, HAL, Costa, P&O, Marella, Cunard, Celebrity, Emerald, Marella and Viking.

Port of Lisbon, Portugal

The Port of Lisbon is the third-largest port in Portugal. While cruising into it along the Tagus River, the impressive structures of the Belem Tower, Discoveries Monument and Cristo Rei statue of Christ – as well as the Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge – are all within sight. Lisbon centre and all its attractions can be reached on a short walk from the cruise port. From Lisbon, it's easy to take day trips to resort towns such as Estoril, Sintra and Fatima. Princess, Virgin Voyages, Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Carnival, Windstar and Oceania all include ports of call at the destination.

PortMiami, Florida, USA

The port of Miami is often referred to as the cruise capital of the world, welcoming more cruise passengers to its terminals than any other port. Miami's geographic position makes it easily accessible to the Caribbean and Latin America on cruise itineraries. MSC Cruises recently began work on its new £265 million ($350m) terminal at the port, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2023. It will have three berths for mega cruise ships, making it North America’s largest cruise terminal. Virgin Voyages opened a dedicated cruise terminal there earlier this year. The three-storey Terminal V hosts the line’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, and will be joined by Valiant Lady later this year. 

Port St. Maarten, Caribbean

Passengers are immediately welcomed to Harbour Point Village when they arrive ashore on the small island of St. Maarten, affectionately known as "the Friendly Island". The island’s colourful capital, Philipsburg, can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. This town has plenty of Dutch charm, great shopping in the form of duty-free outlets, souvenir shops and market stalls, as well as bars and restaurants. There are plenty of watersports available too. This beautiful island is visited by Carnival, Costa, Disney Cruise Line, Princess,  P&O, NCL and HAL, to name a few.

Port of Barcelona, Spain

The Port of Barcelona is a launching-off point for many Mediterranean cruises and has one of the highest concentrations of cruise passengers in Europe. Within it is the old harbour, Port Vell, and at the foot of the port is the city’s famous boulevard, La Rambla, which stretches through the heart of the city centre. The thoroughfare can be reached on foot or by a cruise shuttle bus from the cruise terminals. The port is a draw for major cruise lines including Viking, Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Marella and Virgin Voyages.

Havana Port, Cuba

Havana Harbour and the cruise terminal at Havana port are located on the eastern edge of this Cuban city, while Old Havana is almost on the doorstep of the cruise terminal. From there, passengers can walk to Plaza San Francisco, one of Old Havana's four main squares, while further south is seaside boulevard the Malecón. The city's central park is also accessible on foot, although a journey in a vintage taxi is a must. If your cruise is coming from Tampa, Key West, Miami or Cozumel, Havana is likely to be on your route, with cruise lines including Viking, Marella, Variety and Royal Caribbean all paying a visit. 

Port of Livorno, Italy

The Port of Livorno is considered a major Italian port and is located on the western coast of the beautiful region of Tuscany. The destination is a popular cruise centre, thanks to its close proximity to Pisa and Florence. Both cities are easy to reach by train after a shuttle bus transfer from the cruise terminal. It's then a 15-minute train journey from Livorno to Pisa, or just over an hour to Florence. The port destination is used by cruise lines including P&O, Marella, Royal Caribbean, HAL, Fred. Olsen, Carnival, MSC, Cunard and Regent Seven Seas.

Port of Stockholm, Sweden

The port of Stockholm is one of the busiest in Europe and shortly after arriving ashore, passengers can visit the stunning city from one of two major cruise terminals: Stadsgarden and Frihamnen. The Millesgården is an art museum and sculpture garden located on the island of Lidingö in front of Frihamnen port. More of the city’s famous museums – such as ABBA The Museum, the Viking Museum and the maritime-focused Vasa Museum – are conveniently located on the city's island oasis of Djurgården. NCL, Royal Caribbean, Viking, Regent and Ponant all include itineraries to Stockholm.

Port of Key West, Florida, USA

At the port of Key West in Florida, the main attractions are all in close proximity as the island city is only four miles long by two miles wide. The old town has historic buildings, art galleries, tropical gardens, shops, vintage saloons, restaurants and bars. Also situated there are The Hemingway Home and Museum and the famous Sloppy Joe's bar, which has been in Key West since 1933. Thanks to its year-round tropical climate, cruise passengers can snorkel or dive in the coral reefs and wrecks surrounding the port. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Princess, Celebrity, P&O and Virgin Voyages regularly call here.

Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico

With its central Caribbean location, San Juan cruise port in Puerto Rico is a modern world cruise capital. San Juan offers old world charm and natural wonders. Old San Juan is a historic landmark, with 16th- and 17th-century Spanish-style buildings and the fortresses of San Cristobal and El Morro. There are also many shops, lively cafés and restaurants to visit. Natural beauty lies in San Juan's beaches and verdant El Yunque National Forest. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, P&O, Celebrity, Silversea and Disney Cruise Line all head here.

Port of Sydney, Australia

With iconic sights such as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, Sydney is one of the world’s great port cities. Cruise ships glide past these iconic structures and through the dramatic sandstone passage cliffs of The Heads that lead to and from the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the only Australian city to have two dedicated cruise terminals and thanks to its size, visitors will be able to see plenty there in a day or two. Cruise lines docking here include NCL, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, HAL, Royal Caribbean, Silversea, Oceania and Virgin Voyages.

Port of Venice, Italy

Venice is one of the most stunning cities to cruise into, passing sites such as St Mark’s Square as the ship leaves the Adriatic Sea to enter a narrow entrance called the Porto di Lido, on the way to the piers at the Venetian Lagoon and the Venice Cruise Terminal. However, since 2021 ,  medium and large cruise ships have been banned from Venice's historic centre until further notice, due to environmental concerns. Instead, they currently moor at Marghera, a district of Venice on the Italian mainland. P&O, NCL, Royal Caribbean, Marella, Princess, Azamara, MSC, HAL, Oceania and many others call at the destination.

Port of Kotor, Montenegro

Cruise passengers are in for something special as they enter the port at the Bay of Kotor. The ship wends its way through a 17-mile (27km) waterway offering fjord-like views of mountains and leading to the old walled city of Kotor. The old city dates back to the Middle Ages and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with attractive buildings, churches, squares and stone streets. It is a short walk from the cruise port and has small shops and restaurants to stop off at. The destination is reached by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL).

HAL opens sales for 2026 Grand Australia and New Zealand cruise

Holland America Line has opened sales for its 2026 Grand Australia and New Zealand itinerary.

The 93-day cruise on 1,432-passenger Zaandam will sail roundtrip from San Diego and call at 44 ports in 10 countries.

Departing on January 4, 2026, the itinerary will sail around the Hawaiian islands, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea before calling at Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and French Polynesia.

The itinerary also features a two-day Great Barrier Reef scenic cruise and six overnight calls in Honolulu, Fremantle, Sydney, Hobart, Auckland and Papeete.

Four late-night departures will take place from Adelaide in Australia and Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine in French Polynesia. Prices start from £15,549.

On March 7, Zaandam will meet fellow Holland America Line ship Volendam in Sydney, as the ship completes its 2026 Grand World Voyage .

Chief commercial officer Beth Bodensteiner said: “Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world’s most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States.

“Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.”
