In early December 1979, firefighters were called to the Travel Inn Motor Hotel on 42nd Street as a fire burned in room 417. Although first responders encountered thick smoke in the room, one noticed the shape of bodies on the pair of twin beds and attempted to administer CPR.
But there was an even bigger problem. The bodies of the women had no heads and no hands.
” ‘A real sick bastard did this,’ ” retired NYPD detective Jim Riegel, who was working as a beat cop that day, recalls his sergeant telling him in the new Netflix series “ Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer ,” out Wednesday.
But the killer was a clever bastard, too. Investigators noted the crime scene was “devoid of evidence” and they were unable to identify the victims. He did, however, leave behind their clothing, including a pair of Bonjour jeans, white leotards and a black fur coat, neatly folded in the bath tub.
Stumped, the police used mannequins from nearby department stores and dressed them in the victims’ clothing, hoping to spark an identification from friends or family who recognized the outfits.
A friend of one victim came forward and the slain woman was later positively identified through a cesarean-section scar and chest X-ray as 22-year-old prostitute Deedeh Goodarzi. To this day, the other young female has never been identified.
The predator, dubbed “The Torso Killer,” would strike again in May 1980. This time, at the Seville Hotel, where he strangled Jean Reyner, a 25-year-old mother working in the sex trade to finance a child custody battle.
“In this case, instead, he removed her breasts and placed them on the headboard for shock value,” former Commanding Officer of Bronx Homicide and criminal profiler Vernon Geberth says in the series, noting it convinced him of one thing:
“I’ve got a serial killer. That’s it.”
Still, at the time, no one suspected the scope of this sexual sadist’s homicidal footprint, which stretched into the Garden State and had started more than a decade prior.
It would take about five months after the grisly Travel Inn slayings for investigators to arrest their man, a married father of three from Lodi, New Jersey, who preyed on sex workers in Times Square, then a seedy nucleus of pornography, prostitution and crime.
‘They were marginalized sex workers’
In the new docuseries, the second in Netflix’s “Crime Scene” anthology, director Joe Berlinger dissects the Torso Killer’s murder spree against the backdrop of the sexually charged, crime-ridden culture of 1970s Times Square and how it provided the predator with a fertile hunting ground.
Despite the gruesome nature of his murders, the butcher, named Richard Cottingham, never warranted the breathless news coverage of David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz, who only three years prior paralyzed the Big Apple with fear .
“I have done many shows about serial killers, and I have always marveled at the fact that [Ted] Bundy, [John Wayne] Gacy, [Jeffrey] Dahmer and Berkowitz were all household names, perversely,” Berlinger told The Post.
“But Cottingham flew under the radar precisely because of how he chose his victims and who his victims were. They were marginalized sex workers in a Times Square that was nearly lawless and when the police, at best, looked the other way.”
The series features interviews with former sex workers, including Barbara Amaya, who was raped and robbed at gunpoint by a man she believes was Cottingham, although she was inexplicably spared.
“It was an era when the sex worker was criminalized. If they came forward and said they’d been assaulted, they would be arrested for prostitution, so there was no reason to come forward,” Berlinger said.
“And even worse, the rape laws were particularly onerous, and you had to provide a witness to bring an allegation of rape. All these factors created this crucible in the center of Manhattan for Richard Cottingham to flourish.”
As he moved through Midtown undetected, Cottingham, a successful computer operator at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Manhattan, was also committing sadistic sexual assault and sometimes murder at the Quality Inn, a motel in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.
A crime-scene slip in New Jersey
Cottingham’s luck began to unravel in early May 1980 when the maid at the Quality Inn found the naked corpse of a handcuffed woman under the bed.
The victim, Valerie Street, had just been busted in Miami for prostitution, and was last seen getting picked up by a man in New York City. The clever killer slipped up, leaving a fingerprint on the cuffs. The case also had parallels to a previously unsolved murder of nurse Maryann Carr, who was found dead in the same motel three years earlier.
About a week later, Big Apple authorities would find Reyner’s body, but still, “no one in New Jersey connected them to the Times Square killer,” says former NYPD detective Malcolm Reiman in the series.
Geberth noted that this was a time before the proliferation of surveillance cameras and the use of computer analysis to establish patterns and share information across jurisdictions.
“When you have a series of crimes today, everything goes through the computers, and we have computer analysis and a way of moving these through jurisdictional boundaries. And at the time, it was beyond our capacity to look beyond New York City,” he told The Post.
On May 22, Cottingham then picked up Leslie Ann O’Dell, a 19-year-old runaway desperate to escape her pimp — something he promised to help her do over drinks in Midtown. Instead, he drove her to the Quality Inn, where he tortured, beat and sexually assaulted her for hours, until a maid heard her scream.
When a worker came to check on her, O’Dell cracked open the door and gave a hand signal asking for help. The police were called and Cottingham was apprehended while trying to flee. In his possession, the 33-year-old had a stash of handcuffs, tape and sedatives.
Bergen County investigators realized there were numerous open sexual assault cases with similar hallmarks: Cottingham kidnapped them from Times Square, drugged and assaulted them.
Closing in on the killer
As the New Jersey press reported on Cottingham’s arrest, the NYPD started to take notice. Authorities executed a warrant on his Lodi home, which had a private room containing evidence linking him to the Torso Killer.
“He had pornographic artwork, adhesive tape, books about S&M,” said Geberth. There was also a lockbox filled with trophies from his murders, including Maryann Carr’s apartment key and a necklace belonging to Jean Reyner. These objects, along with his fingerprint on the handcuffs, were presented as evidence by prosecutors at his trial.
Cottingham was convicted of five murders and numerous counts of kidnapping and sexual assault and sentenced to 173 to 197 years, which he is serving in Trenton’s New Jersey State Prison.
But in 2009, he surfaced to again make waves, when he gave a chilling interview to journalist Nadia Fezzani about his motivation and his body count.
“It was a game to me. It was mainly psychological. I was able to get almost any woman to do whatever I wanted them to do . . . It’s Godlike almost. You are in complete control of somebody’s destiny,” he told Fezzani in footage shown in the series. “I never thought I would get caught,” he added.
He also claimed to have committed “80 perfect murders” no one knows about. Cottingham then confessed to more murders including Nancy Vogel, whom he killed in 1967, and five teenaged victims from New Jersey, none of whom were in the sex trade. He has been charged with 11 murders in all.
Berlinger said we’ll never truly know how many women died at Cottingham’s hands, but his story had long fascinated the director, who sees a social justice component aspect to telling his story.
“This guy was particularly ruthless. He tortured women before he killed them and did terrible things to them, and yet we still don’t know who he is because he preyed on sex workers,” Berlinger said, adding that he hopes this series helps destigmatize sex work and potentially solve more cold cases.
“Everyone deserves justice under the law.”

Mystery Man Sought in 2 Hotel Slayings
By Selwyn Raab
- Dec. 10, 1979
From the moment he checked into the hotel in Manhattan, the man was secretive. He registered under a fictitious name and home address.
He had no conversations with the staff. In almost four days at the hotel, he was rarely seen, keeping a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his room most of the time.
But for the city's homicide detectives, the stranger in Room 417 at the Travel Inn Motor Hotel is now the most sought‐after murder suspect in New York. He is believed to be the man who killed two young women, cut off their heads and hands and then tried to burn their bodies last Sunday.
“He left few clues behind,” said Deputy Chief Richard Nicastro, the commander of detectives in Manhattan. “It's an especially difficult case because the identities of the victims are still unknown.”
A detective assigned to the investigation said the murderer had apparently gone to “great lengths” to remove evidence at the hotel, at 515 West 92d Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues. “He left no fingerprints, no implements, almost nothing behind,” the detective said, adding, “I've never seen a room cleaned out so thoroughly.”
Detectives have been hunting for clues or witnesses that would help identify the women and also put them on the track of the murderer.
They have searched mounds of refuse and miles of abandoned piers, looking for the missing heads and hands. Soon they will begin using underwater divers and dredges in the waters of the Hudson River near the hotel. They have questioned scores of persons who work at the hotel and in nearby restaurants, garages and warehouses. They have examined hundreds of recent missing‐person reports, searching for young women who might match the tentative descriptions of the victims.
Because the police believe the dead women could have been prostitutes, they have also reviewed records of men accused of assaulting streetwalkers. A major part of the search has centered on the seamy streets and vice hotels on the West Side. Hundreds of streetwalkers have been questioned in the hope that they could identify the victims from women's clothing found in the hotel room or that they know of two prostitutes who suddenly disappeared.
Additionally, streetwalkers have been questioned about being approached by a customer or “john” who wanted an assignation at the hotel where the slayings oc– curred.
“The murders have frightened the prostitutes, but it certainly hasn't driven them off the streets,” said Capt. John J. Ridge, commander of the Police Departthent's public morals unit on the West Side. “They've just become more cautious about where with 'johns.'”
Chief Nicastro, however, said the slain women might have been teen‐age runaways, many of whom are attracted to the Times Square area. “They could have been kids who got picked up near the Port Authority Bus Terminal,” he said. “We're not certain they were hookers.”
Basing their opinion on medical examinations, the police believe the victims were in their late teens or early 20's. Both were white. One was about 5 feet 6 inches tall and other was about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 105 to 110 pounds. One woman had been stabbed in the chest, and both bodies bore bruises and thin, horizontal knife wounds.
Chief Nicastro said the methods used in the double murder apparently were not similar to any other recent mutilation homicides in New York or nearby areas.
According to hotel employees, the $54a‐day room where the murders occurred was registered in the name of Carl Wilson of Anderson Place in Merlin, N.J., a fictitious town. He checked into the four‐story blue and white brick hotel on Nov. 29.
Last Sunday, at about 9 A.M., hotel employees called the Fire Department when smoke streamed out of Room 417. The bodies of the young women, covered with sheets, were on separate beds that had been set on fire. Neither body was badly burned.
Hotel employees, Chief Nicastro said, were unable to provide descriptions of any women seen with the occupant of Room 417. The police and the Medical Examiner's office have declined to say when the murders occurred.
Several articles of female clothing were found, detectives said. The most promising identification clue was a pair of black, high‐heeled “Phillipe Marco” shoes that are believed to be sold exclusively in this area by Bamberger's Department Stores in New Jersey,
Detectives offered two theories about the amputations and the attempt to burn the bodies: The murderer was in a psychotic rage, or he feared that identification of the victims would incriminate him.
From interviews with hotel employees and other people who work near the hotel, detectives obtained a composite sketch of a man they want for questioning. But they doubt that he is the guest who registered in Room 417. The sketch is of a white man, 35 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds and having brown hair.
“We don't know if he's the one who rented the room,” Chief Nicastro said. “We're not ruling out the possibility that two men could have been involved.”
The face in the sketch, however, is prominently displayed on the grimy green walls and lockers in the detective squad room of the 10th Precinct station house, at 230 West 20th Street. The squad room has become headquarters for a dozen detectives working on the mystery.
“We are going to keep knocking on doors and talking to people until we find the answers,” said Chief Nicastro. “We won't give up.”

Exploring The Concept Of Motor Hotels: From Its Definition To Its History And Amenities
Looking for a convenient and comfortable place to stay during your travels?
If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer to your question: A motor hotel, also known as a motel, is a type of accommodation that is typically located along highways and offers easy access to parking spaces directly outside the rooms.
In this article, we will explore the concept of motor hotels, their history, amenities, benefits, and tips for finding the best motor hotel for your needs. So, let’s dive in!
1. What is a Motor Hotel?
A motor hotel, commonly known as a motel, is a type of accommodation that caters specifically to motorists. Unlike traditional hotels, motor hotels are designed to provide convenient and comfortable lodging for travelers who are on the road. They are typically located near major highways and offer easy access to parking facilities. Motels are a popular choice for individuals or families looking for a place to rest and relax during a long journey.
1.1 Origins and Evolution
The concept of motor hotels originated in the United States in the early 1920s. With the increasing popularity of automobiles and the growth of the highway system, there was a need for accommodations that catered to the needs of motorists. The first motor hotel, the “Motel Inn,” was opened in San Luis Obispo, California in 1925. It featured individual cabins with attached garages, providing a convenient and secure place for travelers to park their vehicles.
Over the years, motor hotels have evolved to meet the changing demands of travelers. Today, they come in various forms, ranging from budget-friendly motels to upscale boutique motels. Some motor hotels offer additional amenities such as swimming pools, fitness centers, and on-site restaurants, providing a more comprehensive experience for guests.
1.2 Characteristics and Layout
Motor hotels are designed with the convenience of motorists in mind. They typically have a layout that allows guests to park their vehicles directly outside their rooms, making it easy to load and unload luggage. This eliminates the need to navigate through large parking lots or carry heavy bags long distances.
The rooms in motor hotels are usually accessible from the outside, with doors facing the parking lot or courtyard. This layout allows guests to easily access their rooms without having to go through a lobby or hallway. It also provides a sense of privacy, as guests can enter and exit their rooms without coming into contact with other guests.
Additionally, motor hotels often have amenities such as drive-up check-in counters, vending machines, and 24-hour reception desks. These features make the check-in and check-out process quick and convenient, allowing guests to get back on the road without delay.
2. Amenities and Services
2.1 convenient parking.
One of the key amenities offered by motor hotels is convenient parking. Unlike traditional hotels in busy city centers, motor hotels are designed with the convenience of travelers in mind. Most motor hotels offer ample parking space right outside the rooms, allowing guests to easily access their vehicles and load or unload their luggage. This makes it extremely convenient for travelers who are on a road trip or have a lot of belongings to transport.
Moreover, motor hotels often provide additional amenities such as designated parking spots for guests with disabilities, electric vehicle charging stations, and secure parking areas with surveillance cameras. This ensures that guests can have peace of mind knowing that their vehicles are safe and secure during their stay.
2.2 Room Features
Motor hotels offer a range of room features to provide guests with a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The rooms in a motor hotel are typically larger than those in traditional hotels, offering more space for relaxation and privacy. Depending on the hotel, guests can choose from a variety of room types, including single rooms, double rooms, and even family suites.
Additionally, motor hotel rooms are equipped with modern amenities to enhance the overall experience. These amenities may include comfortable beds with high-quality linens, flat-screen televisions with cable channels, high-speed internet access, mini-refrigerators, coffee makers, and spacious bathrooms with updated fixtures. Some motor hotels may also provide in-room dining options, allowing guests to enjoy a meal or a snack without having to leave their rooms.
2.3 On-Site Facilities
In addition to the amenities offered in the rooms, motor hotels also provide a range of on-site facilities for the convenience and enjoyment of their guests. These facilities may include a restaurant or café where guests can grab a bite to eat, a bar or lounge area where they can relax and socialize, and a fitness center or swimming pool for those who wish to stay active during their stay.
Furthermore, some motor hotels offer additional services such as laundry facilities, business centers with computer and printing access, and 24-hour front desk assistance. This ensures that guests have everything they need right at their fingertips, making their stay as comfortable and hassle-free as possible.
3. Benefits of Staying at a Motor Hotel
3.1 easy accessibility.
One of the major benefits of staying at a motor hotel is the easy accessibility it offers. Unlike traditional hotels located in busy city centers, motor hotels are usually situated near major highways or roads. This makes them a convenient option for travelers who are on a road trip or need a place to rest during a long journey. With their close proximity to main routes, motor hotels provide a hassle-free experience, allowing you to easily check-in and out without having to navigate through heavy traffic or crowded streets.
3.2 Affordable Rates
If you’re looking for an accommodation option that won’t break the bank, a motor hotel is a fantastic choice. Motor hotels are known for their affordable rates, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. Compared to upscale hotels in prime locations, motor hotels offer competitive prices without compromising on comfort and basic amenities. It’s a great way to save some extra cash for other travel expenses or to extend your trip and explore more.
3.3 Privacy and Convenience
Motor hotels provide a level of privacy and convenience that is highly valued by many travelers. Unlike traditional hotels with multiple floors and long corridors, motor hotels have rooms with direct access from the parking lot. This means you can conveniently park your vehicle right outside your room, allowing for easy loading and unloading of luggage. Moreover, the layout of motor hotels ensures that you have a private entrance to your room, giving you a sense of seclusion and peace of mind during your stay.
Additionally, motor hotels often offer amenities such as complimentary parking, free Wi-Fi, and on-site dining options. These conveniences add to the overall comfort and satisfaction of your stay, making motor hotels a preferred choice for many travelers.
4. Tips for Choosing the Right Motor Hotel
4.1 location and accessibility.
When choosing a motor hotel, one of the most important factors to consider is its location and accessibility. You want to find a hotel that is conveniently located near the places you plan to visit. Consider the proximity to tourist attractions, shopping centers, restaurants, and public transportation. It’s also a good idea to choose a motor hotel that is easily accessible from major highways or airports, especially if you are traveling by car.
4.2 Reviews and Ratings
Before making a reservation at a motor hotel, take the time to read reviews and check ratings from other travelers. Websites like TripAdvisor or Booking.com can provide valuable insights about the quality of service, cleanliness, and overall experience at a particular hotel. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews to get a balanced understanding. Consider the opinions of other travelers, but also keep in mind that personal preferences can vary.
4.3 Amenities and Services
Another important aspect to consider when choosing a motor hotel is the range of amenities and services offered. Look for hotels that provide the amenities you value the most, such as free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, parking facilities, fitness centers, or swimming pools. Some motor hotels may also offer additional services like laundry facilities, business centers, or pet-friendly accommodations. Consider your specific needs and preferences when evaluating the amenities and services offered.
4.4 Budget Considerations
While it’s tempting to choose a motor hotel solely based on price, it’s important to consider your budget in relation to the overall value provided. Compare prices of different motor hotels in your desired location, but also consider the quality of the accommodations and services. Keep in mind that a slightly higher price might be worth it if it means better amenities, a more convenient location, or superior customer service. Look for special deals or discounts that may be available, especially if you are booking in advance or during off-peak seasons.
Motor hotels, with their convenient location and comfortable accommodations, are an ideal choice for travelers seeking a hassle-free stay.
Whether you’re embarking on a road trip or simply need a place to rest during a long journey, motor hotels offer easy accessibility, affordability, and privacy.
By considering factors such as location, amenities, and budget, you can find the perfect motor hotel that suits your needs and ensures a pleasant stay.
So, the next time you hit the road, why not give a motor hotel a try? Experience the convenience and comfort they have to offer!

The Traveler’s Inn, completed in 1953, was the first hotel built by the developer and eventual governor, Wally Hickel. Construction began in 1952 and cost $400,000 (roughly $3.8 million in 2020). The hotel marked the outer rim of Anchorage's downtown and displaced a mink farm. Built close to the Seward Highway (Alaska Highway 1), a key north-south route through Southcentral Alaska's population centers, it was a prime location for motorists traveling through the area. At the time, West Coast Builders magazine declared the Inn the finest establishment of its kind in the West. Following the success of the Anchorage location, Hickel developed a Fairbanks location in 1955.
Typical of postwar motor lodges, the Traveler's Inn was two stories and its U-shaped plan is organized around a central parking lot. The ground-level rooms open up to the parking lot while those on the second-floor open onto an elevated walkway that doubles as a balcony. The hotel office is located adjacent to the entrance drive and effectively closes off to the public the rooms around the perimeter of the parking lot.
In a time before hotel chains became part of the Anchorage landscape, the Traveler’s Inn was one of the city’s higher-end travel lodges. At $9 a night originally (about $85 in 2019), the cost was high for Anchorage. But, said Hickel, “people stayed at the Traveler’s because we offered food and liquor on the premises.” In 1953, the Kobuk, the onsite restaurant for the lodge located at the corner of 7th and Gambell, offered New York cut steak for $5.50 (about $53 in 2019), coffee for 15 cents (about $1.50 in 2019), pie for 40 cents (about $4 in 2019). However, an order of fruit salad cost $2.25, or almost $22 in 2019 dollars. Fresh fruit was much more difficult to obtain in early 1950s Anchorage. The menu at the Kobuk thus provides a glimpse into the challenges of obtaining fresh fruits and vegetables in mid-twentieth-century Alaska, before the era of big-box stores. The cocktail bar, among the fanciest spots in Anchorage for the time, conveyed a midcentury aesthetic and drew locals and tourists alike. With its wood panel walls, leather seating, and carved wooden screens dividing the room, patrons could imbibe at the semicircular bar or table seating.
The hotel was “part of the family” to Hickel. After his home neighborhood of Turnagain-by-the-Sea was uninhabitable after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, the Hickel family resided at the Inn. Originally constructed with fifty-two rooms, the hotel was expanded during the 1960s to seventy rooms. Hickel sold the hotel to Anchorage hotelier Bruce Kendall in 1982. That year, Kendall renamed the hotel the Samovar Inn. More recent ownership renamed the hotel the Travel Inn. Today it does not enjoy the same exalted opinion among Alaskans. It is generally regarded as a budget option and has gained a reputation for crime and vice.

Inside chilling story of The Times Square ‘Torso’ Killer feared to have slaughtered 100 women and mutilated their bodies
- Frances Mulraney

THE Times Square Killer reached infamy with a string of gruesome murders over at least 18 years as he targeted mostly sex workers and mutilated many of their bodies.
Richard Cottingham, also known as the Torso Killer , was arrested in May 1980 after the muffled screams of his last victim alerted hotel staff to her torture.
The staff was reportedly already on edge after Cottingham had murdered a woman in the same hotel just weeks before.
Cottingham, now aged 75, was originally found guilty of the murder of five women but later confessed to other deaths, naming his victims and how they died.
The serial killer, who remains in prison in New Jersey, admitted to more murders as recently as April 2021.
While he has officially been tied to eleven deaths, Cottingham has claimed that he killed between 85 and 100, but remains stubborn in revealing more details and the identities of the victims.
His story will now be relived on December 29 in a new Netflix documentary "Crime Scene: the Times Square Killer."
The killer is believed to have targeted sex workers for his terrifying torture as he wanted to "punish" them.

He remained under the radar working at a health insurance company based in Manhattan while living in New Jersey with his wife, Janet, and their three children, Blair, Scott, and Jenny.
Working the 3pm to 11pm shift, Cottingham went scouting at work for victims through Times Square , which in the late 1970s was far from the vibrant tourist attraction it is known as today.
With crime on every corner, it was a paradise location for Cottingham to pick up sex workers for his deviant abuse without ever being found.
Among Cottingham's most infamous crimes were the horrific killing of two women and the burning of what remained of their bodies in Travel Inn Motor Hotel just off Times Square.
Deedeh Goodarzi, 22, and the body of an unidentified 16-year-old girl were found inside on December 2, 1979.
Cottingham had tortured the two women, decapitated them, and removed their hands, taking the limbs with him as he escaped.
As fire alarms rang, a hotel worker made the gruesome find of their charred torsos.
Goodarzi's daughter has since befriended her mother's killer in the hopes of finding where he left her head.
FIRST KILL AGED 21
Cottingham's first known murder was in 1967 when he was only 21 years old, yet he did not admit to the killing until 2010.
He strangled Nancy Schiava Vogel, a 29-year-old mother of two, in her car in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.
The young mother had met Cottingham after playing bingo with friends and reportedly recognized him as a fellow Little Ferry resident.
Her body was found three days later nude and bound.
Through 1968 and 1969, he killed three teen girls, also only admitting to the crimes decades later.
The youngest was 13-year-old Jackie Harp, as well as strangled 18-year-old Irene Blase and 15-year-old Denise Falasca.
CRIME SPREE
In the early 1970s after these murders, Cottingham began to be picked up for a series of lesser offenses.
He was convicted and fined for shoplifting in August 1972 and a year later arrested and charged with robbery, sodomy, and sexual assault.
The second case was dismissed, as were charges of unlawful imprisonment and robbery in February 1974.
Just six months later, Cottingham abducted Mary Ann Pryor, 17, and Lorraine Kelly, 16.
He reportedly dumped their bodies in a parking lot after taking them to a motel and drowning them in a bathtub.
“Like two little dolls at Christmastime," one detective described the scene.
These murders are reportedly the only time that Cottingham ever showed any sign of remorse.
"I was with them for a couple of days… and got to know them," he said as to why he remembered their names.
"To this day, I don't even think they would have ever said anything. And that's what bothers me because I probably didn't have to do anything to them," he added, according to the New York Times .
He only confessed to these murders last April.
KILLS RAMP UP
Cottingham's murderous spree ramped up in the late 70s as his personal life deteriorated after the birth of his third child.
His wife filed for divorce in 1980 citing "extreme cruelty" and accusing Cottingham of going to gay bars.
It came after years of him refusing to have sex with her and starting an affair with a woman named Barbara Lucas.
Cottingham's killings and assaults had reached a frenzied pace by the time of his divorce.
In December 1977, he had killed Maryann Car, 26, by tying her up and strangling her.
A year later, he attacked and raped Karen Schilt and Susan Geiger just a month apart.
Both were left for dead when he dumped them in New Jersey.
Geiger was pregnant at the time of the attack.
KILLING FRENZY AFTER DIVORCE
After the 1979 Time Square murders, Cottingham spiraled even further and attacked four women in 1980 - the year his wife filed for divorce - killing two of them.
Valerie Ann Street, 19, was found naked and bloodied on May 5 in a Quality Inn in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
Maryann Carr's body had been found years earlier near the hotel but cops could not link the crimes.
A week later on May 12, the body of 25-year-old Jean Reyner was also found strangled with her throat cut in the historic Seville Hotel.
Cottingham was eventually caught ten days later on May 22, 1980.
Up until this point, he had evaded any suspicion by successfully leaving no evidence at any other crime scene to point authorities in his direction before he was caught in the act.
CAUGHT IN THE ACT
Cottingham had picked up 18-year-old Leslie Ann O’Dell as she solicited in Manhattan and she agreed to have sex with him for $100.
They checked into the Quality Inn in Hasbrouck Height, where he had left the mutilated body of Valerie Ann Street just over two weeks before.
Cottingham then handcuffed O'Dell after putting a knife to her throat began to torture her, nearly biting off one of her nipples.
Her cries of pain eventually reached staff and guests who were on high alert after the previous murder.
Cottingham was caught by police in the hallway with handcuffs, a leather gag, two slave collars, a switchblade, replica pistols, and a stockpile of prescription pills.
