Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ramadan, Kwanza and New Year’s Day are annual holidays that can prove difficult for people who have experienced the death of someone significant. Holidays can be some of the roughest terrain we navigate after a death loss. When a parent or primary caregiver has died, how does a child find the means to purchase and wrap a gift for their surviving caregiver? Many of the youth at Mourning Hope want to put a smile on their loved one’s face, and celebrating the spirit of giving brings the child great joy.
For the second year in a row, First-Plymouth Church is teaming up with Mourning Hope this holiday season to support children in this gift-giving endeavor. Shopping for their caregiver is a rewarding and emotionally satisfying part of the holiday season, and children who have experienced the death of a caregiver and have attended a Mourning Hope grief support program are invited to participate in a special event designed just for them.
Kids will have time to select and wrap a gift for their caregiver, and participate in a craft project. While the kids are shopping, some tips and helpful information about how to care for oneself while navigating the stresses of the holiday season will be offered to caregivers.
There is no cost to participate in this event thanks to the generosity of First-Plymouth Church. But in order to ensure an adequate number of gifts, craft projects and snacks, families must register by December 1, 2021.
There will be two time blocks available, each with limited space. Families are encouraged to register early.
The Spirit of Giving is appropriate for school-aged children and teens (kindergarten through high school seniors) who have attended a support group at Mourning Hope.
Eligible families will receive an invitation via email which will include the registration link.
Stop by Lincoln SCHEELS to spread Christmas Cheer with Mrs. Claus and the Elves when you visit Santa at South Pointe’s Santa Station! Find SCHEELS’ very own Elves on the Shelves and enter to win a gift card.

Christmas Fest is a FREE family event to kick off the Christmas season. Come expecting some Christmas cheer, photos with Santa, cookies, hot cocoa and coffee (we see you mom & dad), a family photo station, and a gift for each family! When arriving, we suggest parking in the lot on the North side of the building. Our parking hosts will be happy to help you find a spot to park!
Santa & Mrs. Claus
Masks are preferred while waiting in line and speaking to Santa & Mrs. Claus. If parents feel comfortable, masks may be removed for photos. Please note that Santa and Mrs. Claus will not be wearing masks due to photos and the difficulty of putting on/removing a mask with the costumes. Event details are subject to change pending local health measures as we get closer to December 10th.
We hope to see you there. Thank you

Santa Claus is coming to Champaign-Urbana! We have rounded up a list of all the local places where your child can see him and ensure their spot on the nice list. So gather your cameras and have your children check their wish list before he makes his trip back to the North Pole.
Chambanamoms thanks State Farm Center for presenting this article on where to find Santa.
The critically acclaimed live stage show Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical comes to Champaign this winter to entertain for the holidays. Now, let’s find Santa!
Whether Santa is arriving by fire truck, hanging out in a mall, or making a day of it in a cozy local library, we’ve got the scoop on where to get your Santa pics taken.
First things first: we know Santa is EVERYWHERE this holiday season. Be sure to look at our calendar for many events such as Santa breakfasts, parades, and other places where Santa might show up. Always have your camera (or smartphone) charged and ready. If you are specifically looking for meals with Santa, be aware those events usually fill very quickly.
This list contains events where we are pretty sure Santa will be camera-ready and waiting for your little elves. We look for FREE or low-cost events, some of which require advance registration. Some of the free events may request an optional donation. Some may take photos, but most are BYOC (a.k.a. bring your own camera).
Know of a Santa photo op not on our list? Please submit it here.
