Hornbill Festival Tour Nagaland

Nagaland is a cultural place with a milage of festivals that are celebrated joyously year long but one such event that eagerly keeps every individual waiting is the Hornbill Festival. This annual festival is celebrated in the first 10 days of December in the capital of Nagaland and it is a must attend event. Not only you get to see different cultural meets, folk songs and traditional dresses but also gallop and slurp local eateries and drinks. Buying souvenirs and participate in the night carnival at Kohima is all an exciting opportunity to experience Nagaland. Not to forget, for the music fanatics, the rock concert takes place during the last days of the festival. In our 5N/6D Hornbill Festival tour package, we will take you to explore the famous festival as well as traverse through Naga villages and learn about their culture and lifestyle. Our this Nagaland holiday package also will help you understand the cultivation of Naga people and will take you for nature walks and overnight camping in Seikhakie and also a visit to the first Green Village of India, Khonoma.

DIMAPUR-KOHIMA

On arrival, you will meet our representative at Dimapur airport and a drive to the capital of Nagaland, Kohima. Enroute you may see locals women selling organic vegetables and fruits as well as other local unique and indigenous products. On reaching Kohima you can check in at the pre-booked hotel. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Hornbill Festival

The morning of day 2, you will be taken for a short tour visiting some local market and World War II cemetery. After, you will be taken for the festival in Kisama Heritage Village where you will spend the rest of the day witnessing folk songs, dances and locals wearing colourful traditional attire. You can also visit shops and pick up souvenirs as a memento. Lunch at the festival where you can taste some local cuisine of Nagaland. You will also be taken to visit Phesama village on your way back to Kohima followed by an overnight stay.

After breakfast you will be taken to explore Kigwema village and get some idea about the village lifestyle. Later, you will be taken to the Hornbill festival. You can witness fascinating and ethnic culture of the Nagas through this festival. You can also participate in the night carnival at Kohima where you can see people selling different items from Christmas decorations to chicken barbecue. This infact is one of the most interesting aspect of the carnival, the entire street will be filled with lights and flooded with people. After the fun affair, head back to the hotel for overnight stay.

After breakfast, you will be driven to Jakhama village where you can explore the village followed by a drive to the Hornbill festival. Attend the festival followed by lunch and a drive to Khonoma village which is 20 km from Kohima. Later, you will be driven to Seikhakie for overnight camping in a cabin/tented accommodation.

Khonoma village is the first Green Village of India and has taken an odd step by declaring 27 sq kms of its territory as Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS).

Seikhakie-Khonoma Village

On day 5 you can go for a nature walk towards the place where jhum cultivation is practiced. Later you will also be taken to see the state animal of Nagaland Mithun. Further a drive to Khonoma village for lunch will be arranged followed by a sightsee around to landmarks like ceremonial gates, morung, cairn circles, forts, historical sites, visit age group house, meet local craftsmen, witness the weaving of shawls and making cane basket. All this excursion will be followed by lunch. Towards the end of the day you will be entertained with some indigenous games demonstrated by the local youth and thereafter we shall try the locally prepared brew. Dinner and overnight at the Khonoma Homestay.

After breakfast, you will be driven to Dimapur to connect your flight/train for your onward journey.

The Hornbill festival held in the first week of December shows that with its stunning natural beauty and great cultural traditions, Nagaland can offer a rich fare to tourists.

NAGALAND, with its diverse tribal culture, is a land of festivals. A narrow strip of mountainous territory with rugged hills, emerald valleys, sparkling streams and a rich variety of flora and fauna, the 16th State of the Indian Union has salubrious climate throughout the year. It is bounded by Assam in the west, Myanmar in the east, Arunachal Pradesh in the north and Manipur in the south. Sometimes referred to as the `Switzerland of the East’, Nagaland represents unimaginable beauty, moulded perfectly for a breathtaking experience. For the adventurous, the State is an ideal place for trekking and jungle camping and offers limitless possibilities for exploring its lush sub-tropical rainforests, which are a treasure trove of medicinal plants. The 20-lakh-strong Naga people, by nature, are fun lovers, and life in Nagaland is one long festival.

Day Wise Plan

Day 1: Arrive Delhi

Arrive Delhi by flight. Welcome to India, a country where hospitality is a way of life; to a culture steeped in tradition, a land where history lives in music and dance. You will be received at the airport in a traditional manner with garlands and proceed to your hotel. Overnight in Delhi

Day 2: Arrive Imphal Morning after breakfast at hotel checkout from the hotel and transfer to airport to board the flight to Imphal. Up on arrival Imphal. Meet assistance on arrival by our representative and transfer to your hotel. Later in the afternoon attend Sangai Festival Overnight in Imphal

Day 3: Imphal Morning after breakfast excursion to Loktak Lake- the largest freshwater lake. from Imphal city. Later visit INA (Indian National Army) Museum, After the visit drive back to Imphal. Later in the afternoon attend Sangai Festival. Evening drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Overnight in Imphal

Day 4: Imphal – Kohima After breakfast checkout from the hotel and visit Shree Shree Govindajee Temple. Later drive to Kohima en-route visit to visit World War II Cemetery. Evening on arrival at Kohima transfer to your hotel for overnight stay. Overnight in Kohima

Day 5: Kohima Full day enjoy Hornbill Festival 2015. Evening drive back to your hotel for overnight stay. Overnight in Kohima

Day 6: Kohima – Khonoma Village Morning after breakfast proceed for a half day excursion to Khonoma village (25 km), explore the village and return. Afternoon drive back to Kohima and visit to the festival venue. Evening: visit the local market and drive back to your hotel for overnight stay. Overnight in Kohima

Day 7: Kohima – Jorhat Morning after breakfast drive to Jorhat. Enroute visit Cinnamara Tea Estate (first Tea Estate of India) and and largest institution dedicated to tea research in the world-Tocklai Tea Research Centre. Later visit Jorhat Gymkhana, second oldest golf course of Asia. Afternoon return back to the hotel for overnight stay. Overnight in Jorhat

Day 8: Jorhat – Majuli Island – Jorhat After an early breakfast drive to Nimati Ghat and then board local ferry.

After the excursion of Majuli board the ferry to return to Jorhat. Overnight in Jorhat.

Day 9: Jorhat – Kaziranga

Morning after breakfast drive further to Kaziranga National Park on arrival check in at hotel. Overnight in Kaziranga.

Day 10: Kaziranga National Park Early morning, enjoy Elephant safari to visit central range of the park. Return back to your hotel for breakfast. Afternoon after lunch enjoys your last Jeep safari into the park. Overnight in Kaziranga.

Day 11: Kaziranga – Guwahati – Delhi

Morning after breakfast Drive to Guwahati airport. Up on arrival transfer to airport to board the flight to Delhi at 1655 Hrs. by Air India AI 890

Up on arrival at 1950 Hrs. meet and assistance by our representative and transfer to your hotel. Rest of the evening free at leisure. Overnight in Delhi

Day 12: Depart Delhi

After breakfast proceed for city tour of New Delhi. Later in the evening well in time transfer to airport to board the flight for onward destination.

IRCTC Sangai and Hornbill festival tour package: Check itinerary, cost and other details

Considering the arrival of the unique festivals and to help people reach these destinations, irctc has recently launched a seven days six nights tour package..

• IRCTC is offering a special tour package starting from Delhi.
• The package has been built in consideration of the Sangai and Hornbill festivals.
• The tour package includes a two-way plane ticket and hotel accommodation.

New Delhi : Northeast India has a spectacular combination of majestic mountains, lush green valleys, picturesque landscapes, rich wildlife, and historical monuments. Each Northeastern state, rich in flora and fauna as well as different cultures and traditions, offers a unique experience to visitors ranging from wildlife and adventure tourism to heritage and cultural tourism. Among the many traditions are the Sangai and Hornbill festivals, which are held in the states of Manipur and Nagaland , respectively. Since these festivals are celebrated during the winter season, this is the time for people to visit the states and experience these festivals and the beauty of the state.

Considering the arrival of these mega festivals and to help people reach these destinations, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation ( IRCTC ) has recently launched seven days six nights tour package, ‘Sangai And Hornbill Festival Tour Ex Delhi’.

The tour package, which begins in Delhi, includes a two-way plane ticket as well as an air-conditioned vehicle for sightseeing in the region. It also includes five breakfasts and dinners, along with general insurance and a hotel stay. Moreover, the package also includes tour escort services during the tour.

Day 1 : The flight will take off from Delhi airport at 10.50 am and will land in Imphal at 1.35 pm. On arrival, all guests will be driven to the hotel and after check-in, all will be taken to IMA Market for a short trip. The day ends with dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2 : After breakfast, all tourists will take witness and enjoy the Sangai festival. In the evening, guests will have free time to tour around and relax. The second day will come to a close with dinner and a night’s stay at the hotel.

Day 3 : On the third day, after breakfast, all will be driven to the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India – Loktak Lake. After this, all will be taken to Keibul Lamjao national park, which is the only floating park in the world. Next, the guests will visit the INA museum followed by Loukoi Pat – a picnic spot and then the Japanese War memorial. The day will come to a close with dinner and an overnight stay at the Imphal hotel.

Day 4 : After early morning breakfast, for half of the day the tourists will be taken around for sightseeing in Manipur after which all will be driven to Kohima where they will stay for the night.

Day 5 : On the fifth day, after breakfast, the guests will be taken to take part and experience the Hornbill festival. During the festival, they will eat, drink and relish the festival and enjoy traditional-style Naga huts and go handicraft and souvenir shopping. If there is time left, all will be taken to visit the war memorial at Kohima city and other few nearby attractions. In the evening, guests will have free time to explore the street carnival. The day will end with dinner and a night stay at Kohima.

Day 6 : On a penultimate day, after breakfast, the tourists will be taken around Khonoma village for sightseeing. Next, all will be driven to Dimapur and the day ends with an overnight stay there.

Day 7 : On the seventh day, all guests will be served breakfast and then taken to Dimapur airport to board a flight to Delhi. The flight takes off at 1.05 pm and lands in Delhi at 4.20 pm, bringing an end to the tour.

Hornbill Festival 2022: Dates and Venue

The festival will be held at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, about 12 km from the capital city of Kohima from December 1 to 10. The Hornbill Festival, which has been organised for the past over two decades, is the major platform to promote Nagaland tourism and related business and offers entrepreneurs opportunities to grow.

Hornbill Festival 2022: Tickets 

Domestic tourists must obtain an inner line permit from the local government.

Foreign tourists are required to register at the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) of the residential district within 24 hours of their arrival.

Also, this year, to enable travellers to become a part of the Hornbill Festival, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has come up with an exciting offer. IRCTC is offering an exciting 7-day trip to the Northeastern states of India, Manipur, and Nagaland. 

The Indian Rail package, called the Sangai and Hornbill Festival Tour package, will be a 6 nights/7 days trip. The journey will start in Delhi, and the package is inclusive of flight tickets, hotel rooms, breakfast, travel insurance, dinner, and cabs for sightseeing.

Hornbill Festival 2022: Celebration

Since 2000, the Naga Heritage Village has witnessed hundreds and thousands of tourists coming every year to witness the rich and diverse culture of most tribes of Nagas, vividly and colourfully displayed in the form of folk music and traditional dance, and availability of exotic food, crafts, and art.

Colourful performances, rich traditional crafts, indigenous games, food fairs among others formed part of the festival, which attracted large number of visitors. Local dance troupes, dressed in their ceremonial traditional attires, which are different for each tribe, enthralled the visitors with their performances.

Arrive Guwahati

After Arriving at Guwahati Airport, after receiving a warm welcome, we will drive to Guwahati City. After entering Guwahati City, we will visit the Kamakhya Temple, the most powerful temple in Assam. Drive to Kaziranga National Park (230 Kms / 5 Hrs approx)

Today after breakfast we will drive to Sualkuchi village ? a silk weaving village of Assam (30 kms from Guwahati), where you will be shown the weaving process in the traditional loom by a local weaver in his house, after exploring for some more time we will head towards to Kaziranga National Park (05 hrs drive), on reaching Kaziranga we will check into hotel, evening will be at leisure, dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Kaziranga.

Kaziranga National Park Activities

Today, you will go for a safari and elephant ride in the national park. Go for an elephant ride in the early morning (time 5:00 AM / 06:00 AM / 7:00 AM), then return to the lodge, after breakfast, go to the Jeep Safari Park (time 8:00 AM / 9:00 AM) and return after the hike To the hotel, stayed for 03 hours. After lunch and refreshments, take a Jeep Safari 02? hours in the west/central area of ??the park (time 2:00 AM / 3:00 AM) (also depends on sunset, because winter is sunset, early sunset in northeastern India). air. Overnight stay will be in Kaziranga.

Drive to Jorhat (110 Kms / 3 Hrs approx)

After breakfast today, drive to Majuli (drive 03 hours), arrive at Nimati Ghat, take a ferry 1.30hrs across the mighty Brahmaputra River, arrive at Majuli, explore the island, visit the Vaishnavites monastery, and in Kamalakara, Uttar Pradesh Uttar Kamalabari Satra (Uttar Kamalabari Satra) enjoy the traditional Satriya dance performance, you can also visit the famous mask making monastery (Samaguri satra), and later we will drive to Kamalabari Ghat and cross the Brahmaputra River to Jorhat. Have leisure time in the evening and spend the night in a tea house.

Drive to Kohima (200 Kms / 7 Hrs approx)

Drive to Kohima early today (06 hours drive). After arriving at Kohima, we will go directly to the venue of the Hornbill Festival. Enjoy a day there. Lunch will be a traditional venue. Later we will drive back to Kohima and check into the hotel. Our overnight stay will be in Kohima.

Great Hornbill Festival

After breakfast today, we will drive to the site of the Great Hornbill Festival (Kisema Village) (14 kilometers) to explore this festival. The local resident Naga has dances, songs and many performances belonging to different tribes. Enjoy local food, then drive to Kohima and stay overnight.

Today, after an early breakfast, we will drive to Kigwema village (a very old village during World War II) to explore the village and visit the traditional Angami tribal houses. Then we will drive to the site of the Hornbill Festival. We will visit all In the place of the traditional house of the tribe, you can also enjoy different dance performances of the tribe, taste the local cuisine of the Naga tribe, and then drive to Kohima and check in at the hotel and overnight.

How To Reach Kohima, Nagaland

• By Air:  Kohima does not have an airport, and the nearest airport is 74 kilometres away at Dimapur. Dimapur only has domestic flights and is linked to Kolkata and Guwahati, both of which have direct flights. International passengers must first land at either Kolkata or Delhi international airports before connecting to a flight to Dimapur. It is two hour cab trip Kohima from Dimapur. Which various taxi companies run to and from and which may be booked. If you need to go somewhere quickly, you may take a 30-minute helicopter trip from the airport.
• By Train:  Because of its rugged terrain, Kohima does not even have a railway station. The closest railway station is in Dimapur, which is linked to the key cities of Guwahati and Kolkata. Although travelling by rail might be time-consuming, it is the most efficient method to get to Kohima. It is not only the cheapest way, but it also passes through some of the most beautiful mountain valleys and slopes.
• By Road:  The NH39 connects Kohima to Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. The state is connected with highways Shillong from Guwahati. From where other states reached. To get to Kohima, you can take a taxi or a bus.

Note:  Don’t forget that you’ll need an Inner Line Permit to explore and see most of the places in Nagaland.

How To Get A Inner Line Permit

To visit Nagaland, all visitors who are not Nagaland residents must get an Inner Line Permit. Visitors can get this permission from the Deputy Resident Commissioner’s Offices in Guwahati, Shillong, Delhi, and Kolkata. Alternatively, you can obtain an “on-arrival” ILP at the Dimapur DC office. It is preferable to apply for this permission early in the morning. You will allowed to enter and visit Kohima once you have obtained the permit.

The Hornbill Festival is a ten-day festival. it is held every year during the first week of December the 1st to 10th of this month.

Where Does The Hornbill Festival Celebrated?

The Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, approximately 12 kilometres from Nagaland’s capital, Kohima, celebrates the Hornbill Festival. It starts at 9 AM every day. You may get to the venue by taking a cab. Purchase your tickets at the entrance gate and proceed through the security checkpoint. However, to park your car at the site, you must have a valid permit.

DAY02: SHILLONG TO CHERRAPUNJEE ( APPRX 80KMS)

After breakfast you will drive to Cherrapunji, it is the wettest place on earth. En-route visit – the Mawkdok Dympep Valley View Point. At Cherrapunji you will visit - Dainthlen falls, Wei Sawdong waterfall, Nohkalikai water fall, Arwah Cave, Maswmai Cave and Seven Sisters Waterfalls. Overnight stay in Cherrapunji.

Day04: cherrapunji to dawki .

DAY05: DAWKI TO SHILLONG: 

Morning, after breakfat travel to visit magical Krang Suri waterfall. Next you shall visit Phe Phe falls which will definitely take your breath away. There will be a small trek of 30-45minutes to visit Phe Phe falls. Enjoy and travel back to Shillong for a sound sleep night stay in a hotel in Shillong.

DAY06: SHILLONG – KAZIRANGA (265KM/6HRS)

After breakfast drive to Kaziranga. You will drive to Kaziranga National Park. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga National Park is home to the unique One-Horned Indian Rhinoceros apart from several other wild animals. After arrival at Kaziranga, check in into hotel/resort. Overnight stay at Kaziranga.

DAY07: JUNGLE ACTIVITY AT KAZIRANGA

Early morning go for elephant safari into the jungles of Kaziranga National park. Elephant Safari timings are from 5-7AM. After that come back to hotel, have the breakfast and take rest. After lunch go for afternoon Jeep Safari. It will be 2 hours safari into the jungle. Overnight stay at Kaziranga.

DAY08: KAZIRANGA – KOHIMA

Today after breakfast you will move towards Kohima. On arrival at Kohima, check in hotel and overnight stay at Kohima.

DAY09: HORNBILL FESTIVAL OPENING CEREMONY IN KOHIMA

Today after breakfast you will drive to Kisama Heritage Village, where the incredible Hornbill Festival is held every year from 1-10th December. Today you'll spend the whole day at the opening ceremony of the festival and join in the opening ceremony. The festival is attended by all of Nagaland’s major tribes, and features traditional arts, dances, folk songs, and games. It all takes place amid immaculate replicas of tribal huts, complete with wood carvings and hollow log drums, which are beaten in haunting symphony at the end of the day. The opening speeches begin at 2pm and are followed by the performances. There are many handicraft and food stalls as well as heady rice beer to sample. In the evening, the main attraction is the Hornbill National Rock Concert, where bands from all over the country come to compete. Later back to hotel. Overnight stay at Kohima.

DAY10: KHONOMA VILLAGE EXPLORE

Today after breakfast you will be exploring picturesque Khonoma Village, just outside Kohima and home to the Angami tribe. Later in the afternoon, we shall come back to back to the Hornbill Festival ground to explore more of the activities of the festival. overnight stay at Kigwema

DAY11: KOHIMA AND HORNBILL FESTIVAL

After breakfast, we shall go for the local sightseeing of Kohima, including the Kohima Cathedral Church and World War 2 Cemetery a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Japanese invasion. After that we shall drive back to Kigwema and go to see the Hornbill Festival once again. If time permits you may also go to see Kigwema village. Overnight stay at Kigwema.    

DAY12: DIMAPUR AND DEPARTURE 

Today after breakfast check out from the hotel and transfer to Dimapur Airport for your onward destination with an everlasting memory.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
