The maximum number of participants will not exceed 26 people during your Japan tour. Your group may be joined with other tour groups during the tour. Please note that your bus and tour guide may be changed if other groups join the tour.

Single Supplement

Single travelers are required to pay a single supplement in order to guarantee single room accommodation.

We request one suitcase, one carry-on bag, and an overnight bag per person. The tote bag we provide can be used to hold any small merchandise/souvenirs purchased during your tour. When you check out, bring your luggage to the lobby and the bus driver will assist in loading it onto the bus. When you arrive at the next hotel, the bus driver will unload your luggage for you to bring to your room. Please note: The maximum weight of a checked in bag is typically 20 Kilograms or 44 Pounds. You will be traveling with your luggage except during the bullet train ride (if applicable).

Vaccinations and Quarantine

Japan opened up to foreign tourists in the late 2022.  There have been many changes with who is allowed in, what vaccinations you need, and if you need any applications or other documentation.

Today, I’d like to go over all entry requirements for Japan in 2023 so you can prepare for your trip.

The Latest Travel Procedures to Enter Japan – 2023

What To Know Before Planning Your Trip

There are 68 countries that have a visa waiver program with Japan. This means that if you are a citizen of one of those nations, you do not need a visa before arrival.

You will be given a tourist visa upon arrival at a Japanese airport. The tourist visa is valid for around 90 days; this can depend on the country. For the requirement for your country, please check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

If you have received 3 COVID-19 vaccinations , you are allowed to enter Japan with no quarantine or contact tracing required. All 11 World Health Organization vaccines are approved by the Japanese government.

If you do not have the vaccinations, you must have a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure to Japan.

China and some other countries have some other requirements before visiting.

Before Going to the Airport

To make things easier and smoother for you at arrival, a good idea is to register on the Visit Japan website. It is recommended to prepare this information at least 72 hours ahead of your travel date.

As of today, the Japanese government is using the Visit Japan website. This can be accessed on mobile phones or tablets.  The website generates QR codes that will be used for health checks, immigration and customs to enter Japan.

First off, you register for a new account.

You will need to enter your information, including your passport information, as well as that of any family member traveling with you.

Once that is filled out, you can then enter information about your flight.

Simply upload your vaccination certificates to the portal.  You will then need to submit them, and they will be reviewed by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

You should receive an approval confirmation email within 24 hours of submission.

When you sign in again, there will be a QR code below the Fast Track section.

If you do not choose to fill out the Visit Japan form, you will have to provide all this information in paper form on arrival.

Disembarkation Card  is also known as a landing card. You simply put your name, passport information, city of departure, airline, and where you are staying in Japan.

A QR code will be shown on the bottom of the section.

In case you don’t use Visit Japan, you can also fill out a paper form. They will be provided on the airplane for you to fill out. Before immigration, you will find tables with lots of forms and pens for you to use.

The last section is Preparation for Customs Declaration

Everyone – including Japanese nationals and residents – must fill out a customs declaration form.

This is part of the Visit Japan website as well.

After filling it out, you will also receive a QR code underneath it.

Like the disembarkation form, you can also fill out a paper customs form while on the airplane or at the destination airport if you do not use the Visit Japan website.

Overall, you should have a blue screen at the top of each section. This means you are all set.

If it is red, you will have to do again or do at the airport in person.

At the airport you are leaving for Japan, when you check in for your flight, you will be asked to show your passport and your vaccination papers and/or negative COVID-19 test results .

If you do not have them, you will not be allowed to board the airplane.

If you are not asked at the check-in counter, your name will be called at the gate for any vaccine/COVID-19 test documents.

The Visit Japan program is not asked or required at check-in. It is used only for arrival in Japan. A good idea is to screenshot all your QR codes and the sections related to them. This is if you cannot connect to Wifi or the Internet upon arrival in Japan.

If you have the Visit Japan website open, you should open the QR code pages when getting off the plane. If you have screenshots, you should open them as well.

Right when you get off the jetway, there will be staff with pink vests. They will ask you to get your health check QR codes ready.  They will then ask you to show the one for Quarantine Procedures Fast Track. Simply show the QR code to the staff you talk to.

They will then give you a pink slip.  As you walk to quarantine, there will be gates with staff.  You can hold up the pink slip and walk on through to immigration.

If you do not have the pink slip, there will be an area to present your health documents.  There might be a long line, so filling out Visit Japan before your trip is a great idea. You can skip the long lines.

To stop the spread of avian flu, there are yellow mats before immigration. You should make sure you walk across the mats.

At immigration, the staff  will direct you to the appropriate line.

After clearing immigration, you will enter baggage claim.

In baggage claim, there may be dog sniffers and uniformed staff who will ask to have your carry on inspected. This is for foods and other things not allowed in Japan.

After you receive your luggage, you can activate your customs declaration QR code of Visit Japan.

With this code, you can go to a kiosk (machine) They are clearly labeled, and staff can direct you to them. You have to scan your passport and the QR code at the same time. The screen should turn blue – this means you can proceed to the exit.

There are blue light-marked exits with gates. The uniformed customs staff will direct you. You can walk to the gate, wait for the staff on the other side of the gate to direct you, and you can then walk through.

Now you can exit into the airport and start your trip in Japan.

If you have any trouble with anything, there are staff members around to guide you.

If you do not have the QR code or you encounter trouble with the kiosk machine, there are the traditional customs gates as well where you present your passport and customs declaration form.

The Visit Japan website makes entering Japan easier. If you submit all the documents to the website, you will get QR codes that can be shown to staff and scanned at different kiosks.

Checking your visa requirements and preparing all documentation before arriving in Japan is the best way to make sure your trip to Japan runs smoothly.

Among fellow G7 countries, Japan has had some of the strictest travel rules for Covid-19. It was finally announced that from April 29, 2023, anyone who travels to Japan will not be subject to any testing, and the start of May saw it declassified.

Let’s have a proper look at what has changed for those planning to travel to Japan in 2023 and what to expect when you finally do get here.

Can I Enter Japan?

On May 8, 2023, Covid-19 i s on the same level as the common flu in Japan. On April 29, 2023, all border restrictions were removed and from that date, anyone entering Japan does not have to provide any extra documentation.

That said, the country is still recovering from Covid. While many things are back to normal, tourists may notice a few changes. Read on to find out about the current atmosphere in the country.

What is Japan Like Currently?

Japan, like much of the world, has changed due to the pandemic. Let’s have a look at the measures that are still in place.

Wearing Masks in Japan

Since mid-March, wearing masks indoors lost its governmental advisory rating. The majority of employees still wear masks on the job, so if you head into a convenience store, don’t be surprised to see the staff masked up.

The general public still wears masks widely, more so than pre-pandemic levels, especially on public transport.

Using Hand Sanitizer in Japan

In Japan, customers can still sanitize their hands when entering shops and restaurants. If you like to sanitize, we recommend carrying a tube of hand cream, as some formulas can be quite drying.

Dining Out in Japan

The staff at many restaurants still wear masks and divider screens can still be seen in many establishments.

Single-use cutlery is rife, including disposable chopsticks and plastic forks. Some places expect more self-service than before, such as helping yourself to water and returning trays, though this can change from one establishment to another. In many places, customers should browse the menu via a QR code.

Guidelines for tourist attractions are straightforward. Most attractions don’t require visitors to wear a mask, but temperature checks may be in place. 

Many pre-booking systems were introduced during Covid, and many places have retained this. Facilities such as museums, aquariums, and theme parks still require prior booking or a ticket purchase. We recommend checking with the facilities you want to visit before heading out.

Having been crowned the best tourist destination in the world in the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 , Japan is potentially one of the most popular post-Covid travel destinations. To better understand these global dynamics, LIVE JAPAN conducted an online survey regarding our readers’ future travel plans and what questions they currently have about traveling in Japan post-pandemic. Based on the answers from our respondents, while there are 26% who are planning a visit after May 2023 or have not decided on a date yet, around 74% are planning to visit Japan before May 2023. With a huge influx of international tourists expected to visit Japan by May 2023, here is the latest information on Japan travel with your questions answered, essential to plan your dream trip amidst the new era of travel. A. Each season in Japan has different charms and attracts many tourists all year round. However, based on past data figures reported by JNTO for international visitors arriving in Japan, April and July are some of the most popular months. Meanwhile, September is the least busy period for international visitors. If you want to avoid crowds, this time of the year may be a good option for you to consider. Below is a simple breakdown of what crowds are like in each season and what factors contribute to it. Spring : The number of tourists reaches its peak, predominantly due to the world-famous cherry blossoms in bloom . Many popular tourist sites tend to be packed with people, especially when the sakura is Mankai—in full bloom. Japan’s major holiday, known as Golden Week , starts from late April to early May. This is the most popular time for locals to travel, so almost everything gets crowded this time of the year nationwide. Summer : The rainy period in early summer keeps tourists away in many areas; after this period, it tends to become very hot and humid. However, once you reach the latter half of summer , people flock to the beach and enjoy the numerous summer festivals, like the Gion Matsuri (July) , Tanabata (August) , and Nebuta Matsuri (August) . Also, a few national holidays and others, such as Obon and school summer holidays, occur in summer , contributing to large crowds across the country. Autumn : In autumn , weather conditions are volatile, occasionally developing typhoons or hefty rain, making it somewhat less favorable for travel. From the cherry blossoms in spring to Matsuri festivals in summer , fiery red foliage in autumn to powder snow in winter , each and every season in Japan resembles a whole new different facet, potentially attracting many travelers to visit all year round. Spring In spring , the vast area of Japan is greeted by landscapes bedazzled with beautiful colors of spring blooms, the most famous of all certainly being the cherry blossoms. While the flowering period of cherry blossoms is very short, many people gather at sakura festivals every year to admire the ethereal beauties.

Summer In summer , you’ll find many traditional festivals known as Matsuri take over the local neighborhood. Matsuri has been considered an important part of Japanese culture, many of them associated with rituals of Obon.

Spring (March-May): Weather is relatively warm and calm throughout the day with a pleasant high temperature of 19℃ (66℉) and low of 10℃ (51℉). However, as the cold of winter still lingers at night, it’s safe to pack some warm clothes. Summer (June-August): June and July are rainy periods in most of Japan (excluding Hokkaido), and thus experience lots of rain and humidity. As the rain passes around August, you’ll find many days with blue skies and sizzling sun. Whether it’s rainy or sunny, the summer in Japan gets really hot, either with the humidity or sun. You will perspire a lot, so pack many light and breezy clothes to get changed in. Autumn (September-November): Weather in autumn is volatile, mixed with hot and cold days. As the heat of summer lingers, especially in the early half of autumn , you should have both light and warm clothes handy. Sometimes typhoons develop during autumn , so some precautions are required. A. While there are various ways of getting around in Japan, with the country having a globally renowned railway system, it is fair to say that trains offer the most efficient way of transit. With special passes and tickets that offer unlimited rides for tourists, trains provide both convenience and value for users. Here are some passes and tickets you should take note of for efficient transit around Japan. For getting around all over Japan: Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) Offered exclusively to overseas tourists, this pass grants unlimited travel on Japan Rail (JR) trains across a vast area of Japan (with few exceptions) for around one, two, or three weeks. The pass also provides unlimited access to the Tokyo Monorail, local JR buses, and the Miyajima ferry. If you plan on traveling long distances, this pass is a dream deal you don’t want to miss out on. Q. What are the required airport procedures to enter the country and what can I do to make it go smoothly?

A. Although some steps may vary depending on the airport , the general procedure you’ll take after you get off the plane is as follows: ・Medical inspection at the quarantine station ・Immigration ・Claiming your bag ・Inspection at the plant and animal quarantine station ・Customs ・Head to the arrival lobby For your entry procedure to go smoothly, make sure to pre-register for Visit Japan Web ; a digital service that enables you to complete your immigration procedure and customs declarations online. The new Fast Track feature also allows users to complete certain quarantine procedures in advance (e.g. registering required documents, including a valid vaccination certificate, Covid-19 Negative Test Result Certificate issued 72 hours prior to departure, and questionnaires). While there are new services to help you achieve some shortcuts, the most important thing of all is for you to be aware of the latest travel requirements for your country and regularly check for updates from official information.

Q. Do I need to be vaccinated?

A.Vaccination is not a prerequisite for all entrants to Japan. Those who do not hold a valid vaccination certificate must submit to the quarantine center a negative Covid-19 test result certificate issued 72 hours before departure from a medical institution. On the other hand, those with a valid vaccination certificate showing they’ve received three doses of a vaccine listed on the Emergency Use List released by the WHO can enter Japan without a pre-departure inspection certificate, inspection upon arrival, or waiting after entry.

Q. What if you are vaccinated but the person traveling with me is not?

A.As stated above, vaccination is not a prerequisite for entrants to Japan. However, as with any other travelers who do not hold a valid vaccination certificate, they must respectively follow the set quarantine procedures upon entry.

Q. Do kids / babies need to be vaccinated?

A. People under the age of 18 do not necessarily need to hold a valid vaccination certificate, as long as their parents or their accompanying parental guardian submit their valid vaccination certificate on their behalf. If in case the parents or guardians do not hold a valid vaccination certificate and are planning on entering Japan with a valid Negative Test Result Certificate, children under the age of 6 will be exempted from quarantine (although it is recommended that all children hold a valid Negative Certificate). Those over the age of 6 are required to undergo the same quarantine procedure as adults and thus are requested to present their own valid Negative Test Result Certificate respectively at the quarantine center. A child’s exemption on submitting a valid vaccination certificate or Negative Test Result Certificate is only applied to those traveling with their parents or a guardian in charge. Thus, if the child is traveling solo, they’ll need to follow the quarantine requirements regardless of their age. Q. What countries need a visa to enter Japan?

A.As of October 11, 2022, the Visa (Short-Term Stay) exemption is arranged for 68 countries and regions. (*Conditions apply for some countries, refer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website for more details). For entrants who are entering from countries (or people who do not meet the required conditions) outside the list, they will need to apply for a visa prior to entry. Major countries that require a visa: The Philippines, Vietnam, countries within the CIS, and more.

Q. Are there many flights to Japan right now?

A.While it depends on the country, since Japan reopened to international tourists in October, many airline companies are increasing their flights to accommodate an increasing number of tourists. Since the reopening in October, the number of inbound tourists has increased by 2154.8% since October 2021. This figure is expected to continue to grow steadily. To see if there’s a flight from your city, we recommend checking Skyscanner . When you have confirmed a flight from your city, you can start searching for the best deal on flights to Japan. Using a search engine like Skyscanner, you can compare every online flight deal and find the cheapest airfares. Q. What should I do if I get COVID during my stay?

A. If you think you’ve contracted COVID-19 while traveling in Japan, the first thing to do is contact the health center or the COVID-19 Consultation Center, which will advise on the treatment method and period. If you test positive at a medical institution, they will contact the health center for you. Depending on your condition, they will either advise you to stay at your current accommodation and recuperate or transfer to another location. On the other hand, if you test positive utilizing a store-bought kit, you’ll need to contact the local government health center or COVID-19 Consultation Center yourself and wait for their updates on the treatment method and period. Q. Do I have to wear a mask in Japan?

A. There are no strict mask mandates imposed in Japan. However, the government still recommends that people wear masks when indoors (unless there is enough social distance, limited or no conversation) or where they cannot keep a sufficient social distance (such as in a crowd or on public transit). Also, in many restaurants, shopping centers, and other indoor facilities, you’ll find that they request a mask to be worn. The facilities mask policy is usually posted at the entrance, typically indicated with a picture of a mask. For children under two years old, mask-wearing is not required in any circumstance. Those aged between two to six do not need to wear a mask regardless of social distance, but is recommended in some cases. On a side note, it is worth noting that Japanese have worn masks naturally before the COVID-19 outbreak; thus, you may be surprised to see so many people continuing to wear masks in their daily lives, even if it’s not required.

Q. What is new or has changed since 2020?

Until recent years, Japan’s tourism industry experienced a long quiet moment without international travelers. Despite things, the industry sustained its momentum and continued to evolve, introducing many new attractions for us to look forward to in 2023 and beyond. Below are some recent openings for you to have on your radar: ・NAKED FLOWERS FOR YOU (Yurakucho, Tokyo): An experimental art exhibition comprising a series of digital floral gardens , opened in March 2022. ・Ghibli Park ( Aichi Prefecture): A theme park based on the world of Japan’s famous animation studio Ghibli, opened in November 2022. For upcoming attractions to open in 2023 and beyond: ・Tokyo Midtown Yaesu (Yaesu, Tokyo): A new shopping complex facing Tokyo station , set for its grand opening in March 2023. In September 2022, the 1st basement floor shops and bus terminal have opened ahead of the complex’s grand opening. ・Senkayaku Banrai (Toyosu, Tokyo): A new off-site facility in Toyosu with a reproduction of an Edo cityscape, aimed at promoting Japanese food culture. Set to open in September 2023. ・Tokyu Kabukicho Tower ( Shinjuku , Tokyo): A new grand entertainment facility in Tokyo’s downtown , Kabukicho, set to open in April 2023. Ms. Miharu was great and also our bus driver (bus #81) for driving us to our destinations safe everyday. Miharu is very knowledgeable and comical, we really enjoyed her company and knowledge.

I cannot rave enough about this tour. Miharu and Joyce (subbed for 2 days) were our top notch hard working guides. I appreciate the history and interesting side stories were communicated on the bus, so at most locations we were able to explore on our own. The hotels, meals and coach were very comfortable & enjoyable. Everything was ready and prepared when the group arrived. The itinerary is well paced and full so you get your money's worth. The sushi making, Ninja throwing and Maiko tea ceremony & performance were so much fun and a compliment to just sight seeing. This was a very memorable trip with a great group of fellow travelers. All in all, a very well organized tour and I would not hesitate to book another with AJT.

One of our many highlights from this trip was our amazing tour guide, Ito. He went above and beyond immersing us into his amazing culture and making our experience unforgettable. Any time of the year is the best time to visit Japan! In March and April, you can see beautiful cherry blossoms, in May there are seasonal flowers, such as Wisteria, Baby blue eyes, and shibazakura (phlox moss). The summer months from June to August is the best time for festivals like Awa Odori, and there are amazing fireworks festivals, too. In Hokkaido, fields of lavenders are in bloom at this time, as well as many other summer flowers. You can see the cherry blossoms at different times in spring, depending on where you travel - earlier in the south, and later as you move north. Southern to Central Japan sees cherry blossoms from late March to mid April. This is the perfect time to see the pretty pink flowers anywhere from Nagasaki and Fukuoka to Kyoto's Maruyama Park, all the way over to popular Ueno Park in Tokyo. The Tohoku region's cherry blossoms bloom around late April, if you travel up to Sendai or Morioka. Up in Hokkaido, late April to early May is the perfect time for a stroll in a park in Hakodate or Sapporo to see the famous cherry blossoms.

Here's What's New in Japan for Travelers Planning a Trip in 2023

An expert deep-dives into how the Land of the Rising Sun has changed over the last three years.

After living in Tokyo as a student and young professional, I’ve made visiting Japan a priority at least once a year since, deep-diving new and interesting themes and destinations as the country continues to evolve both with and against the rising tide of globalization. I’ve written about everything from the secret world of “rotten girl” fan fiction manga to the far-flung village in Shikoku that’s become a cult attraction among Kengo Kuma architecture devotees; I’ve also authored three travel books about the country. This time, I’ve been on a quest to discover everything that’s new and different now that Japan’s officially open for tourism once more. Here’s what I’ve found after a month of on-the-ground research: 

Hotels want to be more than just a place to stay.

They want to be your tour guide. Born from the ashes of the pandemic, hotels are leaning harder into diversifying their offerings. In Japan, hotels are upping the ante to become not just the place you hang your hat, but the lens through which you capture the destination. 

Leading that trend in the luxury section is Aman, which has established a reputation for embedding itself so deep within its locales that it feels endemic. Aman Tokyo was the first Aman to take the recipe for sprawling resorts into the heart of a city ; a sanctuary incorporating natural materials, a floor plan pastiche of the traditional Japanese house, and incredible views of the imperial gardens with — on a clear day — Mount Fuji just behind. During the quiet of the pandemic, the brand dug even deeper, creating a circuit of bespoke tours for guests to the nearby Nihonbashi district, where they connect with artisans who have been perpetuating precise, generations-old traditions like kimono making and chopstick whittling. At the in-house restaurant, Musashi by Aman, the eponymous chef Musashi takes diners on the most comprehensive culinary experience possible. Never mind the flight of sushi shopped from the market earlier in the day; on Sundays and Mondays, Musashi retreats to his mountain hideaway to grow rice, farm wasabi root, and spin his potters wheel into compelling ceramics — all of which then find their place on his dinner table. 

The theme of intentionality continues at Aman Kyoto, which opened just as COVID-19 was ripping across Asia; a sanctuary on the outskirts of the city with a tucked-away garden in Mount Hidari's forest, inspired by the ruins of Machu Picchu, but with distinct local flair. The perfect antidote to the touristic hustle of the country’s favorite temple town, the resort’s modus operandi is to encourage guests to completely slow down, whether that means soothing soaks in the geothermal onsen , riding bikes around the nearby temples (wondrous places of worship but with a fraction of the tourist traffic), or strolling through the property’s forest and sitting down in a quiet nook with a resident artist to paint the vivid sakura buds of spring or the deep red maples of koyo in the autumn. 

Across the midrange and budget categories, it’s Hoshino Resorts, the legendary Japanese hospitality company, that’s making a concerted effort to be the custodian of local culture. Their KAI properties put playful twists on Japanese wellness, granting visitors entry into an arcane realm of traditions that extend far beyond soaking one’s body in hot water. Each KAI ryokan , or traditional Japanese inn, is grounded within its native destination, where dinners and breakfasts prioritize seafood, meat, vegetables, and even dishware from the local prefecture; and activities go as in depth as creating one’s own line of beauty products using geothermal water and local essential oils. 

Hoshino’s OMO hotel brand focuses on urban destinations. At their property in the Sanjo district of Kyoto, for example, there’s a map of the neighborhood painted as a massive mural in the lobby, with restaurants and shops hand-picked by the staff painted in (each one has a QR code, too, so you can save them to explore). Their hour-long “Ranger Tours” match guests to employees for brief walkabouts around the hotel; mine highlighted unique souvenirs from shops dating back 300 to 400 years.

The Olympics spawned new accommodations across the entirety of Japan, not just in Tokyo.

Tokyo’s 2020 Olympics ambitions extended far beyond supercharging the city’s infrastructure; the strategy was nationwide. Of course, the Games ended up being a pale shadow of its intended self due to COVID-19, but plans to build new hotels all across the country had long been in motion already. 

While the capital certainly had its fair share of openings — most notably the dazzling new Four Season Tokyo at Otemachi, and the party-prone Tokyo Edition, Toranomon (with its sister property, the Tokyo Edition, Ginza, opening up the street next year), Kyoto saw a huge number of hospitality heavy-hitters plant roots, too. Beyond the Aman Kyoto, the heart of the city now has a dozen new and notable addresses including the Ace Hotel, Hotel Ethnography, Marufukuro in the former Nintendo headquarters, and the standout Park Hyatt Kyoto, just steps away from Kiyomizu-dera. Do yourself a favor: even if you’re not calling the Park Hyatt home, it’s imperative that you stop by at sunset for cocktails at the small bar on the fourth floor — the views of Yasaka pagoda are as iconic as any Fuji photo. 

Of all the hospitality stalwarts, it’s IHG — with over 50 years' presence in Japan — that’s making the biggest bet on the country's reopening tourism boom. First out the gate in 2020 was the Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora, a hybrid retreat that blends European comfort with Japanese wellness. Then the Kimpton Tokyo Shinjuku opened next to the Park Hyatt Tokyo with more approachable nightly rates; and without an initial influx of international travelers, the pet-friendly property became a haven for well-heeled Tokyoites and their pooches during the border closures. Two more Hotel Indigos opened in 2022 — one in the forested Karuizawa area, and one on the outskirts of Nagoya, and seven more properties are slated to open in the portfolio over the next couple of years, including another Hotel Indigo in Tokyo’s vital Shibuya neighborhood.   

“Now, more than ever before, there’s a lot of support to get tourism out into the rural areas of Japan,” explains Rob O'Leary, Black Tomato’s Japan travel expert. “The Kura project north of Tokyo is worth noting as a big sustainability effort to bring young Japanese back to the countryside and help renovate traditional properties for accommodation and internationally inclined tourism services.” Despite the downturn of the pandemic, the Japanese government continued a pipeline of fiscal aid to areas experiencing population drain. “We recently signed a pledge with the town of Ine on the Tango Peninsula (near Kyoto),” adds Tyler Palma, the head of operations for Inside Japan Tours. “The agreement ensures that the travelers [we bring to the region] will stay for a minimum of two nights, which will allow them to not only experience the culture and atmosphere, but give back to the local economy, thereby preserving a unique way of life.”

Kyushu is becoming the must-visit destination outside Tokyo and Kyoto. 

With a spate of international travelers poised to plan their second (or third, or fourth) trip to Japan, Kyushu is eagerly positioning itself as the go-to destination for those wanting to venture a little deeper, beyond the well-trodden Tokyo-to-Kyoto circuit. The country’s third-largest island is the heartland of many of Japan’s most coveted touchstones: tonkotsu ramen (Ippudo et al.) was born in Hakata; some of the finest beef is raised on the ranches of Miyazaki; shochu is distilled from barley and potato here; and it’s where Buddhism first arrived in the Japanese archipelago. Further, Yakushima Island is said to have inspired Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke, and there are more hot springs per capita here than anywhere else in the country, coaxed up from the below the Earth by some of the most active volcanoes on the planet.   

A long-time favorite for Korean travelers, Kyushu is closer to Seoul than Tokyo as the crow flies, and it’s now catching the eye of major hospitality players. The InterContinental ANA Beppu Resort and Spa in Beppu is the island’s first legitimate international endeavor; Hoshino has recently opened an outpost of their KAI brand here as well; and there’s a Kengo Kuma-designed KAI up the mountain in the onsen town of Yufuin nearby. Both destinations are a part of Oita Prefecture, the perfect place in Kyushu to dip one’s toe, so to speak, if you only have three extra days to venture beyond Japan 101. 

Next year, The Ritz-Carlton will open in Fukuoka, Kyushu’s largest city, and the Shinkansen bullet train will continue to expand here as well, proffering speedier service to locales that have been traditionally more burdensome to reach. Tokyo is finally getting more green space and pedestrian-friendly routes.

Perhaps another function of the outdoors-oriented pandemic narrative, Tokyo finally seems to have more walking arteries away from busy roads. With tiny, packed-together apartments, Tokyoites have always used shopping areas as proxy hangout spaces due to the dearth of parks relative to the sprawling size of their city. Recently, however, a handful of greener pastures (literally!) have cropped up, lined with cafes, shops, and public seating. Check out the buried metro track line in Shimokitazawa, stretching from Higashi Kitazawa station through the heart of the hip neighborhood and down to Setagaya Daita station. In Shibuya, Miyashita Park is breathing new life into a rather forlorn section of the neon-clad area. And now it’s incredibly easy to link Sensō-ji temple to the Tokyo Skytree along the newly redeveloped Mizumachi canal. 

An interesting aberration of Tokyo’s shop-to-socialize culture is the creation of luxury brand cafes. Take home a piece of Fendi or Louis Vuitton at their branded eateries; a latte at the new glass snake of a building in Ginza will set you back 1,500 yen (around $12), a bargain for the brag and the Vuitton logo-ed paper napkin holder you can take home. (The coffee itself was so-so, but the geometric design on the foam was definitely worthy of the ‘gram.) 

The crowds are already back.

If you’re rushing to make Japan travel plans (Japlans?) before the crowds descend on the country anew, I’m sorry to say: that ship has sailed. Kyoto’s temples are jam-packed, and reservations at must-try restaurants are already backlogged. Although mainland Chinese visitors — who made almost half of Japan’s tourism intake before the pandemic — have not yet returned, travelers from neighborhood nations like Korea and Taiwan are arriving in droves. Americans are back in full force, too, and domestic guests are moving around their country like never before thanks to a generous travel subsidy by the government putting up to 11,000 yen (around $80) a day in the pockets of roving Japanese nationals.

There’s a currency Catch-22. 

In the 20 years that I’ve been visiting — or living —in Japan, I’ve never seen such a strong U.S. dollar relative to the Japanese yen. It’s made mealtime an absolute pleasure; dining in Japan has always been lower-priced and higher-quality than in Western countries, but now I find myself planning all-day eating excursions to hit up establishments that are no longer aspirationally priced, plus gorging on all of the incredible cheap eats in between. The catch, however, is that accommodation prices are soaring as hotels falsely inflate their rates for the inbound international travelers booking up their rooms. A luxury hotel room in Tokyo this month (Dec. 2022) might set you back $1,200 a night, or more, and staff at these hotels are still getting used to the onslaught of diverse demands again. Breakfast’s been a sore spot at many of the properties, with unmitigated lines, and long wait times for a cup of coffee. Kudos are owed to the Grand Hyatt Tokyo for crushing their buffet service — it's speedy, tasty, and has the best croissants in town.

Masking is still prevalent.

Endemic to Japanese society since SARS in the early 2000s, wearing a mask in public has long been a courtesy performed by those who are feeling unwell to protect people around them. Officially, mask-wearing mandates have completely relaxed, yet everyone is still wearing them all the time — even outside, even dozens of feet from the nearest person. Recently, I had to eat a meal wearing plastic gloves provided to me by the restaurant. The influx of foreign tourists will likely help normalize a more relaxed approach to masking (traveler-laden Kyoto already had noticeably less masks than some of the rural destinations I’ve visited).

Destination Japan: here’s what to look forward to in 2023

Travel to Japan is open again for Australians – resuming just in time for the autumn and winter seasons. Japan remains a firm favourite amongst Australian travellers with the country one of the fastest-growing overseas destinations for Australians before the pandemic.

If you haven’t got your Japan adventure planned just yet, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2023. Even if you’ve been a frequent visitor in the past, there are still plenty of new things to do and see. Here’s an overview of some of the must-do experiences and events on offer across the country in 2023.

World-class arts and events in 2023

Sapporo Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) is one of the most popular winter festivals in Japan and 2023 will see the return of the in-person Snow Festival for the first time in three years. With ice sculptures illuminated at night, delicious hot drinks served in ice bars, and adrenaline-boosting snowmobile rides, this festival is a winter must-do and takes place from February 4-11.

New places to stay and things to see since you’ve been gone

The JR Tadami Line has come back into full operation for the first time since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The Tadami Line stretches between Aizu-Wakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture and Koide Station in Niigata Prefecture. A two-carriage train, the route is often referred to as one of Japan’s most beautiful rural railways.

Trending travel experiences and destinations

Shimokitazawa has a well-earned reputation as Tokyo’s coolest neighbourhood with its independent coffee shops and one-of-a-kind vintage clothing stores. Time Out even named it one of the top 10 coolest neighbourhoods in the world. The area has welcomed three new shopping and dining complexes over the past two years: Bonus Track, Reload, and Mikan Shimokita. All three boast multiple restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops, helping cement the district’s place as a youth culture hub.

More tourists are open to getting off the tourist path. The initial return of tourists to Japan has seen mostly FIT (free independent tourists) searching for authentic experiences including adventure, luxury, and sustainable travel. By slowing down and engaging with nature and local culture, travellers to Japan are showing interest in small, locally owned businesses including accommodation, restaurants, and guides, and local experiences.

Japan Travel 101: Your first trip in 2023

As with any trip abroad, your first time visiting Japan will be filled with adventure, new experiences, and interesting challenges. But from your first time  sleeping on a futon  to your first time getting on a night bus to Osaka, there are a few things you need to prepare yourself for.

We’ve already taken a look at how to prepare for  post-pandemic travel , but here we will look at some of the basics to keep in mind when planning your first Japan trip.

1. Don’t just stay in Tokyo

On your first trip to Japan, it can be tempting to set your sights on Tokyo and not aim to explore much further. But if you want to get a real sense of what Japan is like, you’ve got to cast a wider net!

One way to explore without venturing too far out of your comfort zone is to choose a city as a base and find some interesting day trips in the area to experience a bit more culture. For example, while staying in Tokyo, you could travel to areas like Nikko, Chichibu, Kamakura or Kawagoe in a day. These areas give you a taste of life outside the big cities.

You should also consider what kind of holidays you like in general. Many first-time visitors only think of Japan as Tokyo or Kyoto, but there are all kinds of regions to explore. Here is an overview of what activities you can do in other areas:

• Skiing and snow activities: Hokkaido, Nagano, Niigata
• Beaches: Okinawa, Kyushu, Chiba
• Nature trails: Most of Japan!
• Tradition: Kyoto, Tochigi, Ishikawa
• City life: Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo

This goes for the seasons too! Japan isn’t just beautiful in  cherry blossom season  but all year round. There are some particularly gorgeous sights  in autumn .

2. Figure out transportation in advance

Once you’ve figured out where you’re going, you should think about how you’ll get there. Don’t make assumptions about how easy it will be to get from A to B!

Deciding your method of transport will depend on where you’re staying and your travel priorities. While you may think that taxis are the easiest option, they can be expensive and are not always easy to find outside big cities.

• The  shinkansen  (bullet train) is the most expensive and convenient transportation option. Purchasing a JR Rail Pass is the best way to cut costs if you’re visiting on a temporary tourist visa.
• Buses and local trains are best for budget travelers but these tend to have the longest travel time so plan accordingly.
• Car rentals are perfect for those heading into less touristy areas, but costs increase quickly with toll and gas being key factors.
• Taxis are expensive but come in handy if you’ve missed the last train and aren’t traveling outside city limits.

How to Get to and Around Japan?

Most flights from international starting points such as Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand, land at Narita International Airport in Tokyo or Kansai International Airport in Osaka . Getting Around Japan

The famous Japanese bullet train, or Shinkansen , provides an easy and quick way to travel across the whole country, without the risk of delays or the hassle of getting to an airport. Most cities are conveniently connected by Shinkansen bullet trains , such as the two and a half-hour journey from Tokyo to Kyoto. Each shinkansen line has different types of train, which customers can choose from.

The one downside of traveling by train is that there is often little space for luggage larger than a carry-on suitcase. Many hotels do, however, provide the service of sending your luggage on to your next hotel.

•  Do you provide Tokyo private family tour? We provide private tours in Tokyo. Because English tours guide in Japan are costly, you can consider a private transfer service with driver, as alternative to joining an all-inclusive group tour (with tour guide + transportation). You can also consider joining a guide foot tour, in which you will use public transportation between attractions. If the attractions are close by, walking tour is a great option as well.
•  For the 6 days Best of Japan join in tour, is airport transfer included on the first day upon arriva The first night of our join in group tour will be at Narita Hilton Hotel, and the hotel provides free shuttle service. Our tour guide will assist you to take the shuttle to the hotel upon arrival.
•  What do you recommend for night tour in Tokyo? There are many different night tours in Tokyo, covering a large range of attractions such as city night view, shopping districts, Kabukicho in Shinjuku, shows, and bars.
•  Do you offer join in bus tour in Tokyo? We currently don't have seat in coach tour. If we have available seat on the tour, we welcome tourists to join our day tour in Tokyo. Tourists will meet the group at the first attraction and arrange transportation back to hotel at the end of the day.
•  How much does it cost to book a private transfer for a day in Tokyo? We offer different cars to meet your need. The cost depends on the type of car requested. We currently have luxury sedan, 7-seat Alphard Van, 10- and 14- seat Hiace Van, and 20 –seat coaster mini- bus.
•  Is one day enough for a trip to Kamakura from Tokyo? If you depart early, schedule only a few attractions, and staying for a short period at each stop, you will make a tour to Kamakura in a day. However, we recommend following any suggestion by the tour guide.
•  How much does it cost to have a French speaking tour guide in Tokyo for a day? French-speaking tour guides are very limited in Tokyo, especially during cherry blossom season. The price differs depending on the season. Please contact our representative in Tokyo in advance for your Tokyo vacation.
•  Is there any dressing etiquette in the Tokyo tourist attractions? There is no specific dressing requirement in Tokyo. You may refer to the trip tips on our website for how to behave in Tokyo. We hope the information is helpful for your Tokyo trip.
•  Can I submit a payment in person at your Tokyo office? We welcome visitors at the office. When you book a tour, please submit the deposit, and balance will be due later. The address and contact number of our Tokyo tour operator can be found online by Google.
•  Can you help to create a 5-day Itinerary in Tokyo? Yes, please inform your agent regarding any thoughts and requirements. We will create a tailor-made itinerary at lowest possible price.
• Lalisa  Travel Date：May. 27th 2024 Travel Route: Hokkaido 5-Day Tour by Private Van Was recommended this company by a family member for their previous trip in Hokkaido. Super easy to communicate with via email, and arrangements were good. The driver cum tour guide was Robin who recommended us a lot of food and places to go while we were in Hokkaido. Great experience. Day trip to Biei. Driver was very safe and polite. She was professional and able to guide/explain about sapporo. It was snowy and Safety is the upmost important. The staff members were quite helpful especially Melinda who kept communicating with me. They work really quickly to finalize our vacation. Additionally, the driver communicates effectively. We had to stop in several places, but he made it all happen. Highly recommend booking from them.  
• Rosalind Wong  Travel Date：April. 15th 2024 Travel Route: 7 days to travel out of Tokyo to the north of Honshu I booked Japan Holiday for a car and driver for 7 days to travel out of Tokyo to the north of Honshu. Our group of 8 fitted into the 9- seater comfortably with luggage in April 2024. I planned the itinerary with their rep Lydia, who was always prompt and helpful with her replies and suggestions. She was quick to respond to queries which made the overall planning and booking process easier. The guide and driver Snake-San was wonderful, on time and accommodating. Everything was done professionally and we had a wonderful time. The price of the private tour was very reasonable as well. We were very happy with the service. I would recommend this company.
• Anthony Lobo  Travel Date：Feb. 19th 2024 Travel Route: Narita Airport Private Transfer Service We used the driving service for our first trip to Japan, and it could not have gone smoother. It was easy to find and meet our driver when we arrived at the airport and when we were picked up to head back to the airport. I would definitely recommend this service for any first timers. Honestly, it took the stress out of traveling to and from the airport and easily accommodated my family of 5. Communication was easy and everyone was extremely helpful/friendly. The Ultimate Japan Itinerary for First-Timers: From 1 to 3 Weeks

I’ve yet to meet a traveler who didn’t love their time in Japan . It’s just one of those countries that everyone loves. How can you not? The food is carefully crafted and delicious; the history and culture are both rich and long; the landscape breathtaking; and the people super friendly and polite.

Japan remains one of my favorite countries. No matter how long I visit, it’s never enough. I always leave wanting more.

But the country always seems forbidding to many travelers. It definitely still has that “exotic” stereotype that makes people think it’s hard to travel around.

Where should you go? What should you include in your Japan itinerary? Should you buy a JR Pass to help you get around?

To help you out, here are a few suggested itineraries based on my years of visiting that will ensure you see the best sites on your Japan trip — as well as get off the beaten path and get a real sense of Japanese culture!

Japan Itinerary: Know Before You Go

Just be sure to get one BEFORE you go as you cannot purchase them on arrival. For more information on the pass, including how much they cost and how you can get one, read this blog post . It has everything you need to know!

Mobile Data in Japan In Japan, English isn’t widely spoken (especially outside of the major cities) so having access to the internet is vital for checking addresses, using translation apps, and looking up things to see and do. The easiest way to get data is through an international eSIM for Japan .

An eSIM allows you to access mobile data via a QR code so you can have internet wherever you are, without worrying about physical SIM cards or roaming charges. This will save you a lot of time and hassle when using apps like Google Maps, Google Translate, Instagram, and YouTube. It will also come in handy for checking menus at restaurants (since they are rarely in english).  

Day 1 & 2: Tokyo Chances are you’ll be starting your trip in Tokyo , since it’s home to the country’s biggest international airport. If your trip is seven days long, activate your JR Pass right away, so that you can take advantage of the free JR trains that run through the city.

While you could easily spend your entire week in Tokyo and not get bored, here are some of the highlights:

Visit the fish market – In 2018, Tokyo’s main fish market moved to Toyosu, which is twice the size of the old one, Tsukiji, making it the largest in the world. While a lot of good restaurants moved too (Sushi Dai being the most famous), I find the place itself very stale, since you can no longer wander the floor (you look down via a walkway above; you also need a visitor’s pass to enter).

The old outer market in Tsukiji is still great though, and you can still find food and stores there too. You can wander alone and just eat and shop until you can’t anymore! Most businesses open at 6am, so it’s a perfect place to go in the morning when you wake up early because of jet lag. Food and drink tours of the Tsukiji Outer Market are available for around 13,500 JPY.

See Sensoji Temple – Sensoji is beautifully painted and sits in a scenic spot near a five-story pagoda and the famous Kaminari Gate. There’s a huge statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, inside the main hall. It’s always busy but is worth seeing with your own eyes. The temple is free to visit.

Drink in Golden Gai – This alleyway of back-street bars is a lively place to drink at night and has a bit of a red-light-district feel to it. It is not to be missed. Even if you don’t drink, be sure to wander about. Arigato Tours offers tours of the area where you’ll learn about the neighborhood while stopping to sample Japanese classics like sushi, yakitori, and ramen. Tours are 23,900 JPY and include a drink and dishes at four food stops.

Visit the Imperial Palace – When the emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1869, he took Edo for his new residence and renamed it Tokyo. Though you can’t go inside (or get very close), the building is amazing. It is surrounded by lovely grounds and a park, and there’s a moat around the stone walls. You can also see the changing of the guard, though it’s a relatively low-key and unassuming ceremony.

Watch a sumo match – Kokugikan, Japan’s most famous sumo arena, hosts tournaments three times each year. The wrestling that we see today dates to the 17th century, though its origins go back even further, and it’s still one of the most popular traditions in the country. If you’re in town at the right time, this is a must-do! Tickets sell out quickly, so act fast. You can book a ticket online here (you’ll be accompanied by a guide too, so you can learn more about the tradition as it unfolds before your eyes).

If you have more time, consider taking a day trip to Kamakura to see the giant Buddha statue (Daibutsu). It is over 13 meters (42 feet) tall and dates back to the 13th century. The journey is around 90 minutes each way — and free with the JR Pass !

For delicious food, some of my favorite bars and restaurants include: Uogashi Nihon-Ichi (Standing Sushi Bar), Nemuro Hanamaru KITTE Marunouchi, Motodane, Tokyo Whisky Library, Ichiran Shibuya, and Uohama.

WHERE TO STAY IN TOKYO : Hostel Chapter Two – A small, family-run hostel not far from Skytree Station in Asakusa. I really like the shared kitchen and common room, as there’s a real social feel to them.

With its beauty come lots of crowds though, so try to visit outside of the busy summer months. Even with lots of tourists, though, the city is still magnificent and has a lot to offer. Some things to see and do that you shouldn’t miss are the following:

Visit the Golden Pavilion – This famous (and picturesque) temple dates to the 1950s, when a monk burned down the previous temple (from the 14th century) while trying to commit suicide. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most-visited destinations in the country!

Explore Gion – Gion, the historic geisha district, is renowned as being one of the most iconic and atmospheric areas of town. It’s known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, and preservation of geisha (known locally as geiko) culture. Lining the main street are ochayas (teahouses where geishas entertain), small shops, and many restaurants, ranging from upscale kaiseki restaurants serving traditional Kyoto cuisine to casual eateries.

To really learn more about this amazing party of town and its past, take a walking tour of Gion . You’ll learn a ton and get a lot of context. They cost around 1,800 JPY.

Wander in the Bamboo Forest – For a relaxing break, head to Arashiyama and let the dense and towering stands of bamboo envelop you. Located near the famous Tenryu-ji temple, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. It’s not that big, but there are some hidden areas to explore. Just make sure to arrive early if you want to enjoy it without the crowds (it fills up fast after sunrise).

While there, I would also recommend visiting the Okochi Sanso Garden, which (along with the home) belonged to the famous Japanese actor Denjir? ?k?chi (1898–1962). It’s not free (it’s 1,000 JPY), but it’s really nice and has some wonderful views.

Admire Ryoan-ji temple – This is my favorite temple in Kyoto. Originally established in 1450 as a residence for a high-ranking samurai, it was soon converted into a Zen temple and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a mausoleum that houses the remains of seven emperors. Its traditional rock and sand garden is considered one of the best in the country. There’s also a teahouse where you can experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony ( chanoyu ) as you overlook the Kyoyochi reflecting pool.

Wander the Nishiki Market Nishiki Ichiba is now one of the biggest indoor markets in town. Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen” and spanning over five blocks, it is full of vendors selling traditional dishes from the region, classic Kyoto souvenirs, and really just about anything else. There are over a hundred stalls here, many of which have been in the same family for generations. Opening hours depend on the shop but are typically from 9am to 6pm.

To dive deeper into Japanese food culture, you can take a food tour of the market . It’s the best way to learn about all the food you’ll see, as well as the market’s history.

For a half-day trip, you can also visit Nara. It’s a small city just one hour from Kyoto. Nara was the capital of Japan in the eighth century, so there are lots of buildings and temples here that are upwards of a thousand years old (which is rare in Japan, due to fires, as well as World War II). But the real draw in Nara are the deer.

Since the 17th century, those in and around the city have been considered sacred. You can buy crackers to feed them or just watch them stroll around carefree. A guided half-day walking tour that includes all of Nara’s highlights as well as a traditional lunch is 11,500 JPY.

While you’re here, don’t miss a visit to Todai-ji. It’s the world’s largest wooden building and is home to a 16-meter (52-foot) Buddha statue. It was built in 738 CE and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admission is 600 JPY.

WHERE TO STAY IN KYOTO : Backpacker Hostel K’s House – A fun, social backpacker hostel in a great central location. The rooftop terrace is a cool spot to hangout and meet other travelers after a day of exploring.

Don’t miss Osaka Castle though. While it’s not the original (this version dates to 1931), it’s nevertheless an impressive sight. It’s home to a small but insightful museum and an observation deck that offers some picturesque city views.

And be sure to stroll down Dotonbori (ideally at night), the main street, which is lined with restaurants, stores, and tons of neon lights and signs. A guided walking tour that includes Dotonbori as well adjacent neighborhoods is 6,500 JPY.

Today, Hiroshima is thriving . Don’t miss the Atomic Bomb Museum, which depicts the history of the city before and after that fateful day. It has photos, artifacts, videos, and information about the effect of radiation on the population. It’s a sobering experience but one that should not be missed.

If you feel like getting out of town afterward, head to Miyajima , an island that offers a place to hike and enjoy nature. You can also take a cable car to the peak of the mountain to take in the view. A one-way ferry ride to the island takes 10 minutes and is free to JR Pass holders.

WHERE TO STAY IN HIROSHIMA : Roku Hostel – A cozy, small hostel with a rustic atmosphere and design. It feels like you’re staying with a friend here, and the beds are super comfy too.

If you like history, don’t miss the Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village, home to a collection of traditional thatch-roof houses that you can enter to further immerse yourself in the country’s past.

This city (and region, really) is famous for its Hida beef, a high-fat variety that’s even better than any A5 Wagyu you might have. It just melts in your mouth. Be sure to have some while you are here!

The Japanese Alps are not far from here as well, so if you love hiking and want to extend your time in the region, head to Kamikochi for a day hike or overnight trip. It’s just an hour away and has both easy and moderate trails, which are open from April to November. Hiking trails can also be found in Hakusan National Park (also just one hour away by car).

One of the more unique temples in Japan is here too: Ninja (Myoryuji) Temple. While the temple wasn’t home to actual ninjas, Myoryuji was built as a defensive structure (strict laws forbade local lords from building defenses, so they were hidden in the temple to circumvent the rules). These include hidden rooms, secret tunnels, and a maze of staircases and halls to confuse enemies.

If you need a break from exploring cities, Hakusan National Park, home to Mount Haku, one of the three holy mountains, is just an hour south of town.

If you’re here in April, there are incredible cherry blossom displays that are famous in the region. And, just like Takayama, Matsumoto is close to the Japanese Alps, so you’re just a stone’s throw from some of the best hiking in the country.

There are tons of hotels (both modern and traditional) that have their own hot springs (often both indoors and outdoors). It’s the perfect place to wrap up a trip, relax, and take in the views.

In addition to getting a copious amount of R&R, be sure to ride the cable car up the mountain for even more amazing views. The area is surrounded by craters from an inactive volcano that erupted 80,000 years ago (not to be confused with nearby Mount Fuji, which is an active volcano), and you’ll find lots of vendors at the top selling eggs cooked in the sulfurous waters. It’s said the eggs prolong one’s life by seven years, so feel free to give them a try!

If you prefer to hike up instead, the trail is open between July and September, with the trek taking anywhere from 5 to 12 hours, depending on your level of fitness. Typically, hikers leave at night in order to arrive at the summit by dawn. There are little shops along the way that sell food and even beds you can rent in advance if you want to split your journey up. Just make sure you do your research and prepare in advance as it’s a tough hike!

If you really want to play tourist, you can also ride a mock pirate ship around the lake for more views of the mountains, and Mount Fuji in particular.

Full-day tours around Hakone that include all the main sights cost 14,800 JPY.

WHERE TO STAY IN HAKONE : Hotel Green Plaza – With gorgeous views of Mount Fuji, a huge buffet dinner (with both Western and Japanese options), and a private onsen where you can relax and enjoy the view, this is one of the best places to stay in Hakone if you want value but don’t want to break the bank.  

Using the suggestions above, here’s how I would organize your itinerary:

• Days 1-3 : Tokyo
• Day 4 : Mount Fuji or Hakone
• Day 5 : Takayama
• Days 6 & 7 : Kanazawa
• Days 8 & 9 : Matsumoto
• Days 10-12 : Kyoto
• Days 13 & 14 : Osaka
• Days 15 & 16 : Hiroshima

If you do want to spend a few hours in Hakodate, don’t miss the Morning Market, where you can find lots of fresh seafood. You can also visit Fort Goryokaku, the first “Western”-style fort in the country.

Be sure to stop in at the local Beer Museum too, owned by Sapporo Breweries (the oldest beer company in the country). It showcases the history of beer in Japan and how the business got its start. If you’re a whiskey fan, stop by The Bow Bar, home to some rare (and expensive) whiskeys and considered one of the best such bars in the world.

What I love about the city is its location. This region has some of the best hiking in the country. There are plenty of hills and mountains, offering options for both day hikes as well as overnight trips. Some highlights include Mount Me-akan, Mount Asahim, Mount Mashu, and Nishibetsu-dake. For the best views of the city, head to Mount Moiwayama. It’s just a 30-60-minute hike to the top, though there is a cable car you can take as well.

And if you’re visiting in the winter, hit the slopes! There are over a hundred ski resorts in Hokkaido. You can rent skis (or a snowboard) for around 10,000-18,000 JPY. Lift prices are usually 4,000-6,000 JPY per day. In the winter, don’t miss the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. It’s held every February and draws over two million visitors. There are ice sculptures, igloos, live music, and delicious local foods on offer.

Additionally, be sure to take a day trip to Otaru, where you’ll find some of the freshest uni in the whole country (this is the main area where the famed Hokkaido uni is caught). Go hungry and visit the markets, stalls, and shops around there.

WHERE TO STAY IN SAPPORO : Waya Hostel – This is a laid-back, colorful hostel with a social atmosphere that makes meeting people a breeze. It has a homey, DIY feel and is perfect for budget travelers looking for a no-frills place to crash.

There is a ton to see and do in Japan , and you could easily spend another month here and still just scratch the surface (we didn’t even get to Okinawa and the islands!). And while these itineraries are a bit fast-paced, Japan isn’t cheap, so budget travelers need to move around the country quickly to avoid breaking the bank.

But no matter how long you visit, you won’t be disappointed. Japan is an amazing, beautiful, and unique destination that I never get tired of visiting. While it’s not as affordable as its neighbors, there are still plenty of ways to save money , and it’s definitely worth spending the time (and money) visiting. You won’t be disappointed!

Japan has such an incredible array of offerings for travelers that it can be overwhelming trying to see everything in one trip.

Some careful planning is your best chance at successfully making your way through some of the major sites to see in the country for your first trip. 

With how much there is to see and do in Japan, it’s a country that people will often come back to more than once.

Not only does it allow them to see and do more, but even experiencing Japan in different seasons is worth coming back for.  This guide will help you plan your own trip of a lifetime.

What Makes Japan So Enticing?

One of the many fantastic traits of Japan compared to other countries is the way it’s been able to retain a lot of tradition and remnants of culture from centuries ago while also embracing modern technology and Western influences.

You can move from a big city to a small town in a short train ride, almost as if you’re being transported from one time period in Japan to another. 

Japan is also a very safe country comparatively, both for locals and tourists. Tourists who are respectful of Japanese culture are embraced and treated with kindness and hospitality wherever they go. Many people in Japan love to share their traditions, food, and their ways of life with those willing to learn. 

Getting Around Japan 

It’s completely unnecessary to rent a car when traveling through Japan, though it is something you can do should you need one.

The public transportation system in Japan is one of the best systems in the world and is clearly the best way to venture from city to city or within a city itself. 

While it takes some time, planning out the specific routes for where you want to go in Japan is crucial, so you know how to budget for your transportation costs. It also helps you understand what your options are in terms of getting from one place to another. 

It can be overwhelming traveling through a foreign country when you don’t speak the language fluently .

It’s highly recommended that you purchase a pocket wifi device so you can pull up translation apps and maps with ease, as well as communicate with your loved ones back home. 

It’s relatively inexpensive and easy to find these devices; you can book one in advance and pick it up at the airport you fly into.

To have access to pocket wifi for a two-week trip, you’re looking at around $50 USD or so. It’s worth adding that to your budget to stay connected and look up directions when needed. 

The Japan Rail Pass 

One of the most economical ways to utilize public transportation when making your way through Japan is to purchase a Japan Rail pass . A JR Pass gives you the ability to ride many of the local trains and even some bullet trains, or shinkansen, simply by presenting your pass at any train station. 

You’ll save a lot of money using a pass, even if some of the routes you plan on taking don’t accept the pass. The 14-day pass is an excellent bargain if you want to see as much of Japan as possible. If you’re mainly spending your trip in Tokyo , it’s not worth buying a pass. 

The cost of the Japan Rail Pass will likely vary depending on which pass you choose, as well as whether or not you want to buy an upgraded pass to get luxury seating on select trains .

While it’s quite a cool experience to have a green pass, especially if you plan on riding a bullet train, it’s not a necessary expense. 

The Limits Of The JR Pass 

It’s important to note that while the JR Pass is extremely convenient and cost-effective for traveling through Japan, there are some limitations to where you can use the pass.

You’re only going to be able to use it when traveling on a Japan Rail-owned public transportation medium.  Take note that there is some extra cost when using limited express or shinkansen routes.

If you find that you’ll have to ride some subways or public transportation owned by other transportation companies in Japan, it’s worth looking into an IC Card . IC Cards are available for major transportation companies such as Pasmo and Suica.

These cards let you board these trains and subway cars, as the Japan Rail pass doesn’t work on them. 

The IC Card doesn’t get you any special deals when you use them, but they help you limit the number of yen you have to carry on you.

Furthermore, you can use these cards at some vending machines and convenience stores around Japan , so it’s worth setting it up and having some extra yen on it just in case. 

Since there are numerous companies that offer IC Cards, your research is going to have to be thorough once you decide where you’re going, so you choose the right card.

You can purchase and load an IC Card at a train or subway station; Tokyo Station will likely be your best bet since you’ll likely make your way there on your trip. 

Tips For Using Public Transportation In Japan 

When you’re planning out your routes for getting around Japan, planning around where the JR Pass and IC Cards can get you is the most effective way to get around.

It’s not only convenient but helps you keep your travel costs down as much as you can. 

What most seasoned travelers and locals do is use their JR Pass to get as close to their intended destination as possible, as JR routes tend to go pretty far through Japan.

Then, they will use their IC Cards for the more direct route to get to their intended destination. 

You can take your luggage on public transportation with you, but you’ll want to be cognizant of how much you pack when you know you’ll be using public transportation.

Some trains will have limits on what you can bring on board with you in an effort to make sure you don’t take up too much space. 

Preparing For Your Trip To Japan 

You’ll want to prepare yourself with a good portion of yen based on what you decide to do on your trip. A lot of places in Japan either only accept cash or prefer cash.

Be sure you have a small and secure spot for storing your cash when you have it on you. Japan is safe, but you can never be too careful. 

Japan has centuries of history that may be overwhelming to some, but taking the time to learn basic manners and important aspects of the culture can help you navigate the country much more seamlessly. Some light online reading about manners and a translation app on your phone will do wonders for you. 

So long as you’re sure to be polite, say please and thank you, and avoid being too loud or rowdy, you’re likely going to fit in very well in the country. 

Visiting Japan: Why Two Weeks?

Japan is not a country to visit for only a couple of days, or even a week. Two weeks will give you the opportunity to see a sufficient portion of the country.

One of the best ways you can pack in as much adventure and sightseeing as you can hope for is to organize your trip by the cities you want to stay in. 

If you plan to spend two or three days in each city, you’ll have the opportunity to not only explore the city itself but explore nearby towns. Pretty much all of Japan is accessible by train or bus, so you have the ability to make day trips to nearby cities or towns a part of your trip. 

A Two-Week Itinerary For Visiting Japan In 2023

Japan is a fairly big country, and narrowing down where to go can be tough. If you have two weeks, planning to see a couple of cities at minimum is not only doable but recommended, especially if you have a JR Pass. While Tokyo is a grand city and is worth spending a couple of days in, it’s not the only big city worth seeing. 

You also don’t want to overlook smaller villages and cities where the amount of learning you can do is tremendous. So many of these smaller cities and towns have remnants of traditional Japanese culture and ways of living that you have the opportunity to witness. 

When visiting Japan for the first time, you’re likely going to want to hit some of the popular spots that bring people to the country every year.

You’ll eventually want to come back again to explore some of the hidden gems of the country and the smaller neighborhoods where unique culture abounds. 

To make your two-week trip as comprehensive and adventure-packed as possible – without spending too much time traveling and overwhelming yourself – your best bet is as follows: 

• Start your trip in Tokyo and spend three to four days there, with the option of staying in the Fuji Five Lakes for a day
• Make your way to Kyoto for three to four days
• Next go to Hiroshima for two days, making a jaunt to Miyajima island for the day
• Spend your remaining days in Osaka before heading back to Tokyo to head home

Below are some of the top destinations for each of these cities, as well as some other ways to enjoy your time in between seeing the big sights.

It’s important to note that there are so many other places in Japan that are just as beautiful and full of places to see, but you’d need much more than two weeks to see them all. 

There are lots to see and do in the large city of Tokyo, and you have access to so many other places in Japan through a bus or train ride. For instance, making your way to Mount Fuji from Tokyo to spend a day or two there is very easy. You could easily spend your whole two weeks in Tokyo, but you don’t want to limit yourself.

Tokyo is made up of several different districts and neighborhoods and is divided by Central, North, South, East, and West Tokyo.

No matter which part of Tokyo you decide to stay in, you have the opportunity to visit special districts dedicated to certain aspects of Japanese culture while also being able to shop, see shrines , and enjoy various activities and delicious foods.

Qatar Airways Group Celebrates a Record-breaking Net Profit of QAR6.1 Billion (US$1.7 Billion) for the 2023/24 Financial Year

The Group reports the strongest financial performance in its 27-year history, with a total revenue of QAR81 billion (US$22.2 billion) and annual profits 39 per cent higher than the previous year

Total revenue increased by QAR4.7 billion (US$1.3 billion) – up six per cent, marking a significant improvement in the Group’s EBITDA, which grew by QAR1.2 billion (US$0.3 billion)

Qatar Airways passenger loads also surged to more than 40 million – an increase of 26 per cent over last year, as the airline continues to rebound from the recent challenges facing the global travel industry

Doha, Qatar – Qatar Airways Group has today reported the strongest financial performance in its 27-year history, announcing record profits of QAR6.1 billion (US$1.7 billion) in its Annual Report for the 2023/24 financial year.

The multiple award-winning airline group reported historic net profits of QAR6.1 billion (US$1.7 billion) during the 2023/24 fiscal, with a total revenue of QAR81 billion (US$22.2 billion), representing an increase of QAR4.7 billion (US$1.3 billion) – up six per cent compared to last year.

The Group generated a strong EBITDA margin of 24 per cent at QAR19.1 billion (US$5.2 billion), around QAR1.2 billion (US$0.3 billion) higher than the previous year, reflecting the business’s continued focus on customer experience, innovation, digitalisation and sustainability, resulting in streamlined, agile and fit-for-purpose operations across all areas.

This has created a strong platform for the future of the Group’s airline business which carried more than 40 million passengers during the 2023/24 fiscal, an increase of 26 per cent over the previous year.

As a result, passenger revenue increased by 19 per cent, with a capacity increase of 21 per cent driven by the airline’s highest-ever load factor of 83 per cent, offering a sustainable upsurge in market share.

Minister of State for Energy and Qatar Airways Group Chairman, His Excellency Engr. Saad Bin Sharida Al-Kaabi, said: “This latest remarkable annual performance demonstrates Qatar Airways Group’s flexibility and resilience in successfully navigating a constantly evolving global travel industry, and indicates a strong and sustained rebound from the challenges faced by the sector in recent years.”

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “These very strong financials are a testament to the ambition and clear direction that has informed the Qatar Airways Group’s progress throughout the 2023/24 financial year.

“Our continued focus on profitability, efficiency and customer experience have been underpinned by a strategic programme of network growth and fleet expansion, resulting in the highest revenues and profit margins in the history of the airline. We also cemented our undisputed role as a key industry leader, maintaining our position as the airline of choice for millions of passengers worldwide.

“This incredible achievement is in no small part thanks to the collective endeavour of the entire Qatar Airways Group family who have worked tirelessly to achieve such stellar results. We must now use this as a foundation on which to build our continued success.”

As it celebrates its milestone 20 th year of operation in 2024, Qatar Airways Cargo maintained its position as the world’s leading air cargo carrier, forging ahead with a strategic focus on digitalisation, sustainability and growth contributing towards an increase in Cargo’s market share to 7.1 per cent in 2023/24, up by 0.04 per cent compared to previous financial year.

Qatar Executive (QE) has continued to deliver a solid business performance in a highly competitive market operating as the only business jet brand owned and fully integrated with a commercial airline. With consistent growth over the 2023/24 fiscal year, QE saw an increase in commercial charter revenue of more than 17 per cent, with a rise in flying hours of over 21 per cent illustrating its strong customer growth, particularly in Europe, the US and Asia.

Our investment in Qatar Airways’ loyalty programme Privilege Club yielded significant results during 2023/24, with membership increasing by more than 26 per cent. Member engagement also reached record levels with Avios collection growing at over 50 per cent, while Avios spend has grown by 75 per cent, in a year that witnessed the launch of key partnerships in India, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, in addition to the exciting new products in our home market.

Qatar Airways’ network grew to more than 170 destinations in 2023/24, adding Al Ula, Neom and Tabuk, in Saudi Arabia; Lyon and Toulouse, France; Medan, Indonesia; and Trabzon, Turkey throughout the year.

This is in addition to the resumption of operations to 14 destinations, including Bahrain, Bahrain; Birmingham, UK; Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing, China; Davao, Philippines; Tokyo Haneda and Osaka, Japan; Marrakesh, Morocco; Nice, France; Penang, Malaysia; Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Ras Al Khaimah, UAE; and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

The Group’s Commercial team played an instrumental role in bolstering our competitive position, innovating to exceed customer demand, growing revenue and market share, and ensuring the Qatar Airways Group name is synonymous with excellence – evident through airline being awarded the ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’ at the 2023 World Airline Awards managed by Skytrax.

As part of the Group’s ongoing strategic approach to building deeper, more meaningful relationships with global audiences, the brand also solidified its leadership position in the social media landscape during 2023/24. As a result, the Group is now the world’s number one airline across social channels – with more than 47 million combined followers, and is the number one followed airline in the world on Facebook, YouTube and TikTok.

  Qatar Airways Group also made significant strides in expanding its global sponsorship portfolio during 2023/24. Major highlights include the Group’s inaugural partnership as the Global Airline Partner of Formula 1®; becoming Official Global Airline Partner of top tier Italian football team, FC Internazionale Milano (Inter); renewing its existing partnership with FIFA until 2030; partnering with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Group’s role as Official Strategic Partner for Expo 2023 Doha, which significantly raised the global profile of this landmark event on the global stage.
