The tour guide was very knowledgeable! Most of the hotels were good! I didn’t care for the movie in the bus because the volume was too low and then it was too high.

Thanks to CIE, my wife and i had the vacation of a lifetime. The scenery was spectacular and breathtaking as we journeyed the backroads to discover Ireland's cultural and natural treasures. The hotels provided first class hospitality and service. The gourmet meals were a elegant culinary experience. Frank Hamill, our entertaining and engaging bus driver and guide, was an encyclopedia of Irish history and geography who was always eager to share his knowledge. And the Guinness was better than advertised!

The outer half of the shelf and the Canyons support a vast array of marine life. In addition to regular species like Black-footed Albatross and Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel, our trips feature seasonal species such as Laysan Albatross, Flesh-footed, Short-tailed, and Buller’s Shearwaters, and South Polar Skua among many other offshore species. We are also looking for whales, dolphins, porpoises, fur seals and other marine life that populate this nutrient rich environment.

What people love about Westport Tours
I had an incredible week on the Overland Great Atlantic Adventure tour! I went as a solo traveller in my 20s and, despite being nervous at first as the rest of the group were all travelling in pairs, had the best experience I could’ve asked for. We all had a great time together - I found the tour perfect for couples, family, friends and solo travellers alike. Our tour guide David was amazing, very kind, friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure the tour worked for everyone. If you join an Overland tour, you’ll be lucky to have David as your guide, he’s the best! All of the B&Bs/hotels were of great quality with breakfast included every day. The van is very comfortable and has plenty of space for a small group, much better than a huge coach full of 60 people (in my opinion). There was a fair bit of driving but it is inevitable with how much ground is covered. The places we visited and activities were all incredible. The only slight negative I have is that sometimes there were activities on the itinerary that we simply didn’t have time for - e.g. a 2.5 hour hike at the cliffs of moher, and with so much packed in you really don’t get much time to see some places. For example, we arrived in Westport around 7:30pm and left before 9am the next morning, but again that is inevitable with so much packed into such a short space of time. My highlights of the trip were kayaking in Dingle (I absolutely loved Dingle in general and am very glad we had 2 nights there) as well as climbing Croagh Patrick on our last day! The climb was tough but I would definitely recommend it if you’re able - an amazing experience. All in all I’m so glad I booked this trip and truly had the time of my life, I would definitely recommend Overland!
This was my first time in Ireland. I absolutely loved everything about this trip. Tour guide and bus driver were amazing. Totally worth every penny. Would go back in a heartbeat
I highly recommend the Irish Experience Tours to anyone, especially people who don’t like tours! This company took care of all the details leaving us to just enjoy the ride. The itinerary and the accommodations were excellent. The smaller bus allowed us to go places less traveled and enjoy the major attractions with fewer crowds because our driver/guide, Lee, always got us there well ahead of the other tour groups. The accommodations were all situated in the midst of town or a short easy walk away. The itinerary was robust! We packed a lot of sightseeing into 8 days and yet the pace was just right, not too much driving time, just enough leisure time. Our guide, Lee couldn’t have been better. He shared his vast knowledge of Irish history and culture all along the way, as well as providing laughs and stories to entertain us as we drove. He was always helpful with recommendations for dining and traditional music venues. Overall, this trip was a ten+.

The scenic beauty and charm of westport.
Westport is a charming town in County Mayo on Ireland's west coast . Located about 1hr 30 mins from Galway, this remote area of Ireland retains its rugged beauty. There's plenty to see and do around Westport including the Great Western Greenway, Achill Island, Clare Island, Clew Bay with its 365 Islands, Westport House and Croagh Patrick.
We decided to do a weekend in Westport this April and thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful few days absorbing the landscape. Westport is a lovely small town, but there are plenty of lovely towns and villages in Ireland. What makes this area unique is the landscape, and I'd recommend spending some time absorbing the fresh air - just kick back and relax.
Our Westport Highlights...
1. Achill Island & "Achill Henge"
On the first day, we headed out to Achill Island, and the first point of call was " Achill Henge ". Built in 2011 by developer Joe McNamara, it was supposed to symbolise the Celtic Tiger (the large boom in the Irish Economy that preceded the recent recession). It was built without planning permission on a hilltop above Keel on Achill Island. Some people like its symbolism, some think it's just hideous. I'll leave you to make your own judgements...
Visitor Details
Achill Henge does, however, seem to do its job in representing the Celtic Tiger. It sprung up without any planning by a developer who is now bankrupt, left half-built on a remote site and now with no one quite knowing what to do with it. Just like so many of the "Ghost Estates" in Ireland's countryside.
There have been legal movements by the local council to have it removed, though as yet no action has been taken. It does seem though now the years are starting to pass that it may become a permanent feature of Achill Island's Landscape.
Achill Island has many other boasts including Europe's highest sea cliffs. It is a rugged island of hills & bogs, giant views & small villages. A perfect place for those wanting to experience the big scenery & ruggedness of the islands of Ireland's Atlantic coast.
- Find on Google Maps
2. The Great Western Greenway
An old disused train line from Westport to Achill Island has been converted into the Great Western Greenway - a 42km cycle path leading through some of Ireland's most ruggedly beautiful countryside. Coastline, mountains, bogs, rivers & villages all pass you by on this very well planned cycle path. I was impressed with how well this trail has been done. There are a few small stretches on road, otherwise, the vast majority is off-road and in some parts you really feel away from everything. Being an old railway line its gentle gradients make it a very enjoyable leisurely cycle, and with villages, cafés & pubs on route there's no shortage of refueling spots along the way.
Great Western Greenway Details
We hired bikes from Clew Bay Bike Hire , but there's also the option of booking a cycle tour and have a guide show you the best spots (€30-40 pp for 4-7 hrs | www.westportcycletours.com | +353 (0)87 9199152).
If you don't have a guide, be sure to check the wind forecast. The cycle path runs East (Westport) to West (Achill Island). Ireland's prevailing winds are westerly, so in that case, the bike hire people can give you & your bike a lift to Achill Island & you cycle one way with a tailwind the whole time!
The first village you'll pass on leaving Achill Island is Mulranny . A small village with stunning views across clew bay, there's a good café there too for a quick refuel. Look out for the Mulranny Goats too, wild goats that inhabit this area and are often seen on this stretch of the greenway.
We stopped about 5 km after Mulranny at the famous Nevin's Inn for lunch and can definitely recommend their meals - delicious!
Visitor Information
- www.greenway.ie
Along the route, you'll pass Newport , a small riverside town. There are several pubs to choose from here & if you fancy a bite to eat Grainne Uaile is a good choice for food.
Newport Details
There are many bike rental places along the route, so if you fancy just a short stretch then my favourite was the Mullanny to Newport part. 18kms with stunning and changing views and great lunch stops too.
4. Croagh Patrick
Ireland Holiest Mountain sits on the south side of clew bay, and after a few hours exploring Westport Town on the Sunday we headed here to climb the mountain. A distinctive cone shape, the 765m high Croagh Patrick is where St Patrick himself is said to have spent 40 days of fasting and penance.
Croagh Patrick Details
Pilgrimage of croagh patrick.
It's a very popular destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. You will find many religious pilgrims here climbing to the top and including some climbing in bare feet.
Do not be fooled by the large number of people climbing Croagh Patrick; it is a challenging hike to the summit. I was surprised on my first visit how hard parts of it are. It takes 1:30 to 2 hours on the way up, and maybe 1:30 hours on the way down. The upper section is made of a large scree slope of loose rocks that move and slide as you walk. Be prepared with spare layers for the cooler temperatures at the top, good footwear, water and some snacks.
The views though are worth all the effort in climbing, it's just spectacular. Check the forecast closely though for a clear day, and then you'll be able to see from Clare Island out in the Atlantic to Achill Island to the north, all the drumlins of Clewbay and into Westport too. The full 360 panorama of South Mayo is one of Ireland's best vistas. If you fancy travelling on to Clare Island itself, it is well worth the trip. Clare Island Adventures offer plenty of exciting activities that will make for an entertaining group day out, and there is a nice hostel on Clare Island which is also worth a visit. Get there with Clare Island Ferries
5. Clew Bay
Clew Bay itself is one of the most beautiful bays on the whole west coast of Ireland . Dominant mountains surround the bay on both sides, which is full of small islands called Drumlins. These were created as Glaciers from the last ice age 10,000 years ago melted and retreated, leaving small sand and shale islands. They say there's 365 of them, on for every day of the year, though many are no more than a part submerged sandbank. That said though if you've ever wanted to own your own Island then this could be a good place to look, John Lennon even owned one in the 1970s.
Clew Bay Details
There are plenty of charter boat companies offering tours of clew bay, and for the more enthusiastic then sea kayaking is another option too.
For me though just the views from the coastline across the bay are spectacular. Ideally, if you can get a bit of height, then you'll truly get to enjoy the big scenery Clew Bay has to offer.
6. Westport House
Westport itself is a busy town that's popular with tourists and is a favourite among tourists. Wandering the small town & surrounding area is a pleasure, with plenty of interesting places to discover. Between the town centre and waterfront is Westport House , a grand country estate set in large gardens. They have an activity centre & café, and the lakes make a grand setting for the house itself. Please note there is an entrance fee to get up to the house though you can see some of the gardens and lakes for free.
7. The Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley
This area is home to Grace O'Malley, also known as Granuaile, the Pirate Queen . In the 16th century, she was chieftain of the O'Malley clan and has become a very significant figure in Irish Culture and history. Her clan ruled this area of Ireland and were feared seafarers. She was powerful enough to meet and negotiate with Queen Elizabeth directly, using Latin as their only common language. Nowadays there's both truth and folklore attached to Granuile, and for those interested in the history of Ireland then this area has lots of fascinating places to see.

This castle is considered one of the most beautiful historic homes in Ireland with over 30 rooms and 6 permanent exhibitions.
Outside these homes is the beautiful scenery comprised of a lake, a beautiful garden, and a breathtaking view of the Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Clare Island, Achill , and Croagh Patrick.
The Westport House and Ground is open for guests from March to October and weekends from November to December .
If you want a chill morning to spend in Westport, you can drive to Clew Bay where you can find unspoiled beaches. It only takes a 10-minute drive from Westport to reach Clew Bay and you can stay all you want for your satisfaction.
The beach gives a relaxing therapy to everyone who visits it. There are also exciting activities that you can do on the beach if you want to stay longer.
Located in the beautiful Clew Bay, you can find a network of water trails called the “Blueway”. One of the trails is in the Old Head where you can experience a lot of water activities like kayaking, snorkeling, coasteering, and stand-up paddling.
Coasteering is one of the most popular water activities here where you can try adventure swimming, rock scrambling, and cliff diving. It is perfect for adrenaline junkies.
You can also visit Collanmore Island and Clare Island for more water sports activities. Collamore Island is a private island that hosts a fantastic water park equipped with water trampolines and slides.
Water skiing is also one of the top activities you can do here. On the other hand, Clare Island has land and water-based activities. Coasteering, snorkeling, and raft-building are the most popular things to do here.
If you’re visiting the Westport House, you might as well take time to go to the Pirate Adventure Park. The park is named in honor of the Pirate Queen of Connaught. In 2015, the park earned the title as the Best Family Holiday Destination.
With or without kids, this is one of the top-rated attractions in Westport because of its wide range of rides.
This is the only park in Ireland where you can find the Log Flume Ride. The Swinging Pirate Ship is also one of the best rides in the park along with the Cannonball Run slide, Swan Pedalo Boats on the lake, and Go Kart.
Take a break from the bustling city life by biking through the Great Western Greenway. It is hailed as the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland . You will surely enjoy biking in this 42-kilometer and traffic-free trail as you pass through its beautiful landscape.
Families with kids usually enjoy this place as it is safe and kid-friendly. Don’t worry about which bike to use because you can find a lot of bike rental companies in the area.
Looking for adrenaline-pumping activities in Westport? Try the Westport House Adventure Activity Center. Whether you’re going with an “all adult” gang or with your little ones, you will surely have the time of your life here. Just remember that visitors aged 8 and up are only allowed to try these breath-taking activities.
The activity center offers laser combat games, archery tag, zip wire, tree climbing, zorbing, archery, and the sky challenge high rope course.
The availability of these activities also depends on the time of the year and some of them require to be booked in advance.
If you want to see all of Westport in a unique way, you should try booking the Westport Train Tour. This all-weather sight-seeing tour tells the story of Westport in a fascinating way.

However, this is only available from March to October though. If you’re visiting Westport during these months, you better check out this tour for a unique experience.
There’s no wonder why this is considered one of the best things to do in Westport.
The 260-acres of parkland located just five minutes away from the town of Westport is one of Ireland’s finest parkland courses. Visitors can not only enjoy the vast golf field but also the magnificent view of Clew Bay shores and Croagh Patrick.
This is a tourist destination package that you should tick-off from your list.
You should not miss this in your itinerary if you’re visiting Westport. This Georgian town deserves a lot of tourist attention because of its fine-stoned bridges, tree-lined promenades, and historical value. Just in the heart of the town, you can find Rockfleet Castle and Burrishoole Abbey.
There’s a lot of ties in the town which is related to the Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley. This small town can be toured by foot and you can find a lot of shops, bakeries, pubs, and restaurants along the way.
There is no known English equivalent for the traditional Irish Craic but basically, it should be one thing that you should be doing during your tour in Westport. Craic, for the lack of better words, is synonymous to “having fun”. It could mean a lot of things but many people think it means “to gather and play music”.
This is why you should visit pubs in Westport, most specifically Matt Malloy’s. This old-school pub is known to be a reflection of County Mayo’s musical heritage.
Enjoy a pint of beer in Matt Malloy’s while listening to some traditional Irish music.
Hungry for some Irish foods ? Port Mor is one of the most recommended food hubs in Westport. This award-winning restaurant serves foods inspired by local produce. The rustic and quirky vibes of the place make it also more special.
Port Mor is also known for the gutsy flavors which usually leave a good impression on its customers. The seafood meals are the most popular ones here because it is known to be the chef’s specialty.
If you want to try this place, it is located just across Matt Molloy’s pub on Bridge Street.
Croagh Patrick is known as Ireland’s holiest mountain. It is also popular for its Patrician Pilgrimage in honor of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick .
Once you reach the peak of the mountain, you will be granted with a breathtaking panoramic view of County Mayo ’s landscape. It only takes 2 hours to climb Croagh Patrick. The descent takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Learn about the life of the coastguard in Ireland in the Old Coastguard Station. This tourist destination is located 8 kilometers west of the town. You can find exhibitions related to the history of coastguards in Ireland most especially to the 12 families who used to live in this station.
You can also find a display of 12 Currachs, a traditional Irish canvas, and tar-covered boats.
You can find seven studios, a gallery space, and a printmaking workshop if you visit the Custom House Studios and Gallery in The Quay. The view from the studio is also overlooking the harbor.
From time to time, international artists visit the studio to work and gain inspiration from their experience in Westport and its surrounding views.
If you’re looking for an activity to complete your itinerary in Westport, you can take the tour in Mescan Brewery where you can learn about the story of the brewery’s developments.
The tour specifically talks about the Belgian-style brewing which is a unique process brought to Westport.

Westport is fast becoming a food lover's destination. Artisan produce, boutique cafés and top-class restaurants of all kinds combine to make a tempting menu of must-dos for foodies.
Acclaimed local artisan produce, from award-winning Kelly’s black pudding to our ever-popular Mescan ales, appear on menus, while our local chefs win national industry titles each year. You can even do brewery and distillery tours, sample Connacht’s best boxty, or enjoy Ireland’s Best 99!

Is your trip all about family fun ? Check out Westport House Estate with its Pirate Adventure Park, restaurant and campsite, as well as fantastic gardens and forest walks. (There’s also historic Westport House itself to explore – including the spooky dungeons!)
Or gaze out to Clare Island as you go pony trekking on the beach at the foothills of Croagh Patrick. Or dodge some paint ‘bullets’ at Kids’ Splatball. Or try FootGolf (yes, you read that right). Children love the water and the seaside, so why not spend a morning learning how to do stand-up paddle boarding, or how to surf or to sail? For families whose grown-ups like some time out, check out the myriad of brilliant kids’ clubs offered by most of the local hotels.
Culture and history
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Terrie Gray (@terriegraymusic)
Culture vultures flock to Westport knowing it is the artistic hub of Mayo, boasting a host of galleries and a thriving local art scene, as well as its own annual arts festival, Westival .
Other festivals to watch out for include the Westport Food Festival, the Westport Festival of Chamber Music, Mac Luí – Westport Children’s Arts Festival, the Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival and the Gráinne Ale beer festival. Venues range from the state-of-the-art Westport Town Hall Theatre to Westport’s amazing pubs, parks and streets.
Westport is steeped in cultural heritage. One of Ireland’s few architect-planned towns, it was commissioned in the late 18th century by the first Earl of Altamont, of Westport House, as a place for his workers and tenants to live. Elegant Georgian buildings frame the charming banks of the Carrowbeg River, and the generous streets are treelined.
Eco tourism

Westport recently made headlines for becoming the first town in Ireland to ditch plastic straws in favour of biodegradable ones – but the town’s sustainability credentials don’t stop there. The town’s Edible Landscape Project has seen fruit trees and edible plants spring up along the Greenway, while Westport’s Biodiversity Plan focuses on ecologically sound vegetation management, habitat creation, ecological corridors and connectivity, and increasing biodiversity.
Schools, businesses and families all throughout the town take pride in keeping the town and its beaches litter-free, and regular clean-ups are embraced by all. Members of the town’s religious communities have even banded together to form Westport Eco-Congregation , which promotes awareness of the need to protect our natural environment.
The great outdoors
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Destination Westport (@destination_westport)
Kissed by the Atlantic and hugged by a stunning landscape, Westport has so much to offer for anyone who loves to be in nature and the great outdoors.
Conquer Croagh Patrick , stroll along our sandy beaches, surf our waves, forage in our forests, fish our seas, ramble along our boreens and over our hills, be amazed by our wildlife and enchanted by our wildflowers. Discover the road less travelled and delve into ‘hidden Westport’, from scenic drives through jaw-dropping landscapes to out-of-the-way picnic spots and lesser-known beaches .

We don’t have the major high-street stores here in Westport. Nope, we’re all about cherishing the small, the local, the boutique and unique. Behind our colourful shopfronts, you’ll find local shopkeepers, bakers, artists, producers and craftspeople offering everything from stunning fabrics, stylish clothes and beautiful jewellery to hand-picked antiques, traditional crafts and contemporary art.
If you’re here on a Thursday morning, be sure to get a real slice of local community life and pick up a few treats at the Westport Country Market in the old Railway Hotel. Here, locals sell a variety of wares, including handmade soaps, local cheeses, hand-cut flowers, home-baked cakes, organic veg, fresh bread, tempting sauces and lots more!
Hotels and spas
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Westport Coast Hotel & Apts (@westport_coast_hotel)
Westport is renowned the world over for its amazing hotels , each one offering its own unique atmosphere and welcoming accommodation. Of course, hotels mean spas, and we are blessed with a fabulous choice of pampering palaces – sure no wonder we all look so relaxed and happy! If a trip to a hotel always means a massage, you’re in luck. Many of the spas also have thermal suites with steam rooms, saunas and more where you can spend a serene morning or afternoon after enjoying a spa treatment.
Check out the treatment packages at the Westport Woods Hotel’s Beech Spa ; Westport Plaza’s Spa Sula ; Knockranny House Hotel’s Spa Salveo ; Hotel Westport’s Senses Spa ; or Spa Veda at the Westport Coast Hotel.
Those who like to stretch and chill should check out the new dedicated yoga studio, Yoga Root , located in in a beautifully restored 18th-century mill at on Westport's waterfront.
Pubs and nightlife
Whether your ideal night out is a quiet pint by a crackling fire, a hot whiskey and a trad session, a nice merlot in a wine bar, or a multicoloured cocktail and a spirited dance-floor, we have it all. Everywhere is within walking distance, so it’s easy to stroll around the town at your leisure, drifting from one place to the next or just soaking up the friendly atmosphere.
If you’d like to catch a show, don’t forget to check out what’s on in Westport Town Hall Theatre, while pubs like Matt Molloy’s , McGing’s and Cobbler's often have live acts.
Guided tours

Love a good tour? So do we! Westport Walking Tours are great craic as well as a mine of information, with lots of stories, facts and anecdotes. Or take a tour around the town on a horse-drawn carriage with the Paddy Joe Foy (AKA the Clew Bay Jarvey) and his trusty cob, Podge.
Westport House and Estate offer a whole range of fun and insightful tours, both inside the house and through its gardens. It also runs a fun and informative miniature-train tour through the town.
Or take a tour of Westport’s very own microbrewery, Mescan , named after St Patrick's right-hand man. Find out how their hugely popular range of delicious Belgian-style bottle-conditioned beers are made using spring water from Mescan’s own well.
What better way to jump in the slow lane than swapping four wheels for two?
Hop on a bike (bring your own or hire one locally) and take a spin on the famous Great Western Greenway, which runs from Westport to Achill – 42k of farmland, rolling hills, picturesque villages, dramatic mountains and wonderful views of the bay.
If you fancy a quick walk, the Westport Greenway is just perfect. Also known as The Old Railway Line Walk, the beautiful tree-lined Westport Greenway is 2.5km long, running between Westport’s two urban areas, the town centre and The Quay.

Island Tours
Inishturk Island Passenger ferry and Clare Island ferry Co.(O’Gradys blue boats)
Encapsulated in the Saw Doctor’s song ‘The Green and Red of Mayo’, Clare Island is located 3.5 miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland. The ferry crossing from Roonagh Pier takes 25 minutes and there is every chance that you will be accompanied on your journey by a school of dolphins and or a herd of seals. Clare Island is the largest (5 miles long and 3 miles wide) of the 365 islands in Clew Bay. Famous as the ancestral home of the legendary Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley (Granuaile), she has a population of about 160 people; economic activities include farming, fishing and tourism with numerous other small businesses also supporting a vibrant community.
Clare Island’s silhouette is dominated by the giant hump of Knockmore at 461metres on her western edge and the more gently sloping Knocknaveen to her centre. Her western cliffs are among the most dramatic in Europe and are home to large numbers of nesting sea birds.
Once on Clare Island, there is so much to see and do – the island’s rich history, geological and biological landscape (studied in depth in the Clare Island survey) can be explored on foot, bike or by mini bus. Be sure to take time out to view the Blue Flag Beach, Granuaile’s Castle, the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the Lighthouse, the Napoleonic Tower and the various Bronze-Age sites.
YOUR Journey To Inishturk ISLAND
The ferry journey to inishturk island is not merely a means of transportation; it is a gateway to tranquility, natural beauty, and a genuine connection with a close-knit community. as the ferry sails back to the mainland, you leave with a heart full of cherished experiences and a longing to return to the island’s embrace. inishturk beckons adventurers seeking solace, peace, and a chance to reconnect with nature’s wonders. .

New LGBTQ+ nightclub coming to Westport; owner seeking community input
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - This week, Lance Pierce gave KCTV5 a tour of the space that will soon be Q Kansas City, an LGBTQ+ nightclub. Located at 504 Westport Rd., he’s excited to join the neighborhood.
“The other day I took Pride flags to all the other bar owners to say hi, introduce myself,” said Pierce. “They all have just been absolutely amazing and so welcoming. They’ve already put the flags up and are super excited for the Pride Parade this weekend. We are super excited to welcome the community to this space.”
Pierce is known in the community for hosting Queer Bar Takeover KC for the last eight years. He says he’s ready for a permanent location.
“We’ve partnered with all kinds of straight bars across the community to turn them into one big gay dance party for the night,” said Pierce. “It’s been a really great opportunity for queer people to reclaim the city and make it their own again and we are just taking the next step in that chapter.”
Q Kansas City is set to open later this year. Right now, Pierce is asking the community for their input to make it an inclusive and inviting space.
“Community members can come in, hear the vision for the space, give us feedback, give us advice on what things they want to see and how they want to see it,” said Pierce. “That process will continue even after we open to make sure that as new generations come in to the queer community, we are continuing to listen, be current, and create space.”
He’s had several walkthroughs already, with many leaving encouraging notes on the windows.
“Someone mentioned keeping earplugs at the front desk,” said Pierce. “So, if they may be neurodivergent or may get overstimulated in the space they can still participate with earplugs. That’s super easy. It’s about operating with a sense of care for your guests.”
Pierce is inviting people to check out the space ahead of the KC Pride Parade Saturday morning from 9-11.
Over the next few months, the space will be transformed. It will have a dance floor, two outdoor spaces, and a speakeasy.
“It’s important that we hold space for our community to lay down the worries of the world, lay down the violence of the world and come in here and dance their little hearts out,” said Pierce. “It’s all about queer joy and that’s what this space will be about. Connections, community, and queer joy.”
After Q Kansas City opens, Pierce says they’ll continue hosting Queer Bar Takeover once a month.

Private Luxury Guided Tour of Connemara from Westport or Ballina provided by Neal Doherty - AlchemyTours.ie
Michigan Central Station: What you'll see on the tour
Today is the day when Detroiters get to go inside and see restored marble, limestone and carvings for the first time.
The ground floor of Michigan Central Station opens at noon for public tours that will include 60,000 people over 10 days, based on free tickets given away by Ford Motor Co. and the Michigan Central teams to residents throughout the community and those who went online from all over the country.
Visitors will experience film, art and storytelling about the history of the building and the future that Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford, envisions for the 30-acre campus in Corktown and southwest Detroit.
Here is what people will see, according to materials provided by Ford in advance:
- The Cube, A Dynamic Film Experience: Inside the historic women’s waiting room, an LED installation "tells the journey of Michigan Central Station: history, restoration and the next chapter."
- The Story of The Station: A 1,000-foot sculptural timeline of "shared moments of triumph, adversity, innovation and resilience that flows down the center of Grand Hall."
- Faces of Michigan Central, A Portrait Gallery: Listen to memories recounted by people in their own voice.
- What’s Your Station Story? In the historic reading room, visitors will be invited to recount their memories and hopes for Michigan Central. "These messages will be memorialized in a time capsule so that future generations can connect with our voices and experience what the station’s reopening means to Detroit residents during this once-in-a-generation moment."
- Open Archive, Resurrecting a Landmark: Photographs and artifacts that offer a glimpse into what it took to restore the deteriorated site.
- Poster Vault, A Visual Trip Through Culture: Walls covered with original train posters, vintage postcards, concert announcements, local sports team memorabilia and flyers for past raves.
- Windows into the Future: A vibrant light installation within the Historic Arcade to learn about the innovative opportunities and programming at Michigan Central, and how it will evolve.
- Interactive light sculpture: Speak a single-word vision of the future and watch as technology translates it into a pattern of light and color that shimmers across the structure, like a mandala, unique to each visitor.
- The Kids’ Zone: Includes “color-your-own” posters for people of all ages, a scavenger hunt and Lego blocks modeled into the station.
- Michigan Central in Motion: Learn about the innovation district where "leaders, thinkers, communities and creators come together to accelerate bold ideas and technologies" and the upcoming park south of the station.
The Faces of Michigan Central exhibit include a range of stories, past and present. Below is just a sample.
Real stories: Kohler
Tomasita "Tammy" Alfaro Kohler and her husband, Ken Koehler, are third-generation owners of Honey Bee Market on Bagley just south of Michigan Central.
"The original owners, my grandparents, were from Mexico. They were immigrants. My husband and I became a team almost 30 years ago," Tammy said. "Michigan Central Station coming here and it being right at the tip of a Mexicantown, we're neighbors. As we call it: Primos."
Ken said, "Ford, he had a vision. We all know what the building looked like. Look where it's at today. When we were building the store, they said, you're going to fix that building up? Are you crazy? I heard that from so many people. My wife and I, our hearts were in it. We want this for the community."
Real stories: Younk
Tiffany Younk is a journeyman ironworker who worked for Midwest Steel at the train station. Her father, Robert Younk, is an ironworker who served as foreman on the project.
"My first day at the station I looked at it and I was, like, 'Well, crap, this is a lot of work. I don't know what I got myself into.' And throughout the three years that we worked here, going through and learning the trade, from being so new and also watching the train station transform into what it is now, it's just awesome to see that."
Robert said, "The station to me, back in the day when I was driving down through Detroit and I was working all around the Detroit area: It was just a lonely, dark old building. It sat all by itself. And you think, there's no way that building's ever going to be salvaged again."
Real stories: Heinzman
Kitty Heinzman arrived in Detroit at age 16 from Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, on March 31, 1958. She waited an hour before her uncle picked her up at the train station, and the majesty of the ceilings captured her imagination that she remembers all these years later, she said.
"You never get over that feeling. I knew this was my destination. And you never get over it. You get emotional, you know, because it's beautiful. Don’t start me again … It's like yesterday," Heinzman said. "... You’re next door to Mexicantown, which is lovely. You've got the Irish, you've got the Mexicans, you've got the Maltese. So look at all the mixtures of people you got here. Everything."

Tour de France: About
The Birth of the Tour de France
On July 1, 1903, 60 men mounted their bicycles outside the Café au Reveil Matin in the Parisian suburb of Montgeron. The five-dozen riders were mostly French, with just a sprinkle of Belgians, Swiss, Germans and Italians. A third were professionals sponsored by bicycle manufacturers, the others were simply devotees of the sport. All 60 wheelmen, however, were united by the challenge of embarking on an unprecedented test of endurance—not to mention the 20,000 francs in prize money—in the inaugural Tour de France.
At 3:16 p.m., the cyclists turned the pedals of their bicycles and raced into the unknown.
Nothing like the Tour de France had ever been attempted before. Journalist Geo Lefevre had dreamt up the fanciful race as a stunt to boost the circulation of his struggling daily sports newspaper, L’Auto. Henri Desgrange, the director-editor of L’Auto and a former champion cyclist himself, loved the idea of turning France into one giant velodrome. They developed a 1,500-mile clockwise loop of the country running from Paris to Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes before returning to the French capital. There were no Alpine climbs and only six stages—as opposed to the 21 stages in the 2013 Tour— but the distances covered in each of them were monstrous, an average of 250 miles. (No single stage in the 2013 Tour tops 150 miles.) Between one and three rest days were scheduled between stages for recovery.
The first stage of the epic race was particularly dastardly. The route from Paris to Lyon stretched nearly 300 miles. No doubt several of the riders who wheeled away from Paris worried not about winning the race—but surviving it.
Unlike today’s riders, the cyclists in 1903 rode over unpaved roads without helmets. They rode as individuals, not team members. Riders could receive no help. They could not glide in the slipstream of fellow riders or vehicles of any kind. They rode without support cars. Cyclists were responsible for making their own repairs. They even rode with spare tires and tubes wrapped around their torsos in case they developed flats. Continue reading from History

A haunting reminder of the past, Achill's Deserted Village is a string of some 80 to 100 stone cottages on a mile-long stretch of road on the southern slopes of Slievemore mountain. Over time, the village was gradually abandoned due to evictions for non-payment of rent, the Great Famine and emigration.
