Indonesia Travel Guide

The verdant mountains and volcanoes in the lush landscapes of Indonesia

With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest island country. Home to over 261 million people, it boasts stunning landscapes, incredible beaches, amazing food, and affordable prices.

While most people just visit Bali, backpacking further afield in the country is an underrated activity. With so much on offer, it can take months to see everything because there is just so much to see and do here: hectic and chaotic cityscapes, cool white sand beaches, and violent volcanoes. Indonesia has it all.

And it’s easy to visit Indonesia on a budget too. It’s extremely inexpensive and your money goes far here.

While most travelers fly to Bali and visit the Gili Islands or head to Lombok, I encourage you to try to get to the less touristy destinations and off the beaten path. Find dragons in Flores, go hiking, see the historic ruins of Java, and go to Sumatra. You’ll find even cheaper prices and far fewer crowds once you escape the digital nomad hub of Bali.

This Indonesia travel guide can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this island paradise!

Top 5 things to see and do in indonesia.

A women swimming with a sea turtle underwater in the Gili Islands, Indonesia

1. Relax in Bali

Bali is probably the most famous of Indonesia’s islands. Although often crowded with travelers, there is no escaping the fact that this place is beautiful. Try some surfing at Bingin Beach or visit the Pura Besakih, the Mother Temple, which is truly stunning to behold. Make sure you see some traditional Balinese dancing in Ubud too. You can also join a yoga retreat pretty much anywhere on the island and cooking classes are also plentiful and make for a great souvenir.

2. Dive in the Gili Islands

For a true sense of an island paradise, head to the Gili Islands . There are excellent (and cheap) scuba and snorkel facilities as well as great nightlife on Gili Trawangan. These islands are super popular with backpackers thanks to their super cheap accommodation and food, party scene, and stunning beaches for lazing around all day.

3. Admire Borobudur

Borobudur is a the world’s biggest Buddhist temple complex, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries. With 2,672 reliefs meant to highlight Buddhist teachings, it’s made from blocks of volcanic rock. Each level is supposed to describe the stages of life. It is said you can’t move on to the top until you discover the meaning of each relief. Admission for foreign adults is around 380,000 IDR.

4. See Komodo dragons

The subject of more nature documentaries than any other lizard, the Komodo dragon is a force to be reckoned with. Komodo National Park, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, is the only place to see the world’s largest lizard in the wild, which grows up to 10 feet long and weighs over 135 kilograms (300 pounds). Admission is 150,000 IDR during the week, with prices rising to 250,000 IDR on Sundays and holidays (just note that there are additional fees for other activities including ranger fees, hiking fees, diving fees, and so on). The only way to really visit Komodo National Park is on a tour since the islands are over an hour away from Labuan Bajo port on Flores Island.

5. Visit Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park covers a total of 800 square kilometers (308 square miles) at the center of East Java and is the largest volcanic region in the province. Get up early to catch one of the most memorable sunrises of your life from the top of Mount Bromo or Mount Semeru. The easiest way to get here is from Probolinggo, through the village of Ngadisari. Although it doesn’t take long to get to the summit (around 45 minutes up a sandy slope) and access to the trail is free, a number of tour operators run guided trips through the park, which includes transport to and from the park.

Other Things to See and Do in Indonesia

1. explore hindi prambanan.

There are 244 temples at this 9th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the central compound being the main attraction. There are eight minor temples and eight major temples here, with the tallest being 45 meters (150 feet) — which is actually taller than Borobudur. Located in Yogyakarta, there’s a lot to see, so schedule a full day here (it’s the second-largest temple complex in Southeast Asia, after Angkor Wat). Admission is around 380,000 IDR.

2. Wander Jakarta

Indonesia’s capital is a large, bustling city with a population of over 10 million. You could easily spend a few days here as there is a lot to see. Admire Istana Merdeka, the presidential palace (visitors are not allowed inside); see the Monas Tower, a symbol of Indonesia’s independence; check out Ancol Beach; visit the National Museum, and go shopping at the Jalan Surabaya Flea Market. For a moment of calm, people-watch from one of the cafes overlooking Fatahillah Square in the Old Batavia, the Dutch Quarter, where you can take in the historic architecture as you take in the local pace of life.

3. Snorkel or dive in Bunaken

The Bunaken National Marine Park is located in the Bay of Manado and it’s where you want to go if diving or snorkeling is your thing. These deep waters offer fantastic visibility and some of the world’s most biodiverse marine life. Keep an eye out for tuna, sharks, rays, turtles, sea snakes, and more. Entry to the marine park is 50,000 IDR per person, though children under 10 enter free.

4. Broaden your taste buds

Indonesia is home to 17,000 islands and over 260 million people. The country is brimming with diverse cultures, traditions, and beliefs. If you want some idea of how diverse this place is, there are over 700 languages spoken here! This diversity is very much reflected in the food. Javanese, Sundanese, Padang, and Balinese food are just some of your options. Hit the markets, participate in cooking classes, or take food tours to get a taste of what the country has to offer. Your tastebuds will thank you!

5. Visit Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is Indonesia’s cultural hub and is a much less industrial city compared to Jakarta. There is an interesting blend of old customs with modern living here (the region still has a sultan/monarchy). It’s a hip place filled with street art, galleries, cafes, great nightlife, and a strong arts community. Yogyakarta is also a good jumping-off point for exploring the popular and picturesque Borobudur and Prambanan sites.

6. See the orangutans in Sumatra

A mysterious and rare primate, the orangutan finds its habitat on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. A visit to see these primates is a moving experience. And, given the rapid deforestation and fires in the area, you probably want to do this sooner rather than later as these animals are gravely endangered. If you go, make sure you’re traveling with an eco-friendly tour company. Reputable companies don’t let you get in close contact with the animals, as the risk of disease is too high. Even a common cold can knock out a baby orangutan. Nevertheless, seeing these majestic animals is an amazing and life-changing experience. Week-long guided treks cost around 20,000,000 IDR per person.

7. Experience village life in Kalibaru

Kalibaru is a small village on the southeastern side of Java. It’s quiet, secluded, and a great place to tour one of the many plantations (cacao, coffee, dragon fruit, rubber, and spices, among others) in the area on your way to or from Bali. It’s not as well-visited as many other places in Indonesia, meaning you can escape the crowds and get a chance to experience what local life is really like. You can stay here after a trip to Mount Bromo, or just visit on a day trip.

8. See the Bogor Botanical Gardens

Located 65 kilometers (40 miles) outside of Jakarta, the Bogor Botanical Gardens have over 200 acres of land and 15,000 species of plants and trees. The gardens are a lovely spot in which to lose yourself for a couple of hours with a book and some snacks. Admission is around 26,000 IDR. There is a commuter train between Bogor and Jakarta with a stop right next to the gardens.

9. See the Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfalls

These are some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali, and yet not many people make the trek here. They’re located about 90 minutes from Ubud, and then you have to hike through a banana plantation to reach the falls. It’s worth it as there are several sets of falls to explore. Just make sure to bring your swimsuit!

10. Explore the megaliths in Bada Valley

Near Lore Lindu National Park are 400 ancient stone megaliths scattered around the hills. No one really knows the origins of these structures, but they’re thought to be over 5,000 years old. No settlement remains or tools were ever found in the area. It’s best to hire a local guide here as the megaliths are not easy to find.

11. Visit the House of Danar Hadi

The House of Danar Hadi in Surakarta (Central Java) is considered one of the world’s best batik museums, with a handpicked selection of favorites from the owner’s collection of 11,000 pieces (batik is a cloth-dyeing method from Java). You have to take a tour to see it all, but it’s worth it. There are lots of antique and royal items on display. They also have batik demonstrations showcasing how these detailed pieces are made. Admission is 35,000 IDR.

12. See the lakes in Kelimutu National Park

Kelimutu National Park, on the island of Flores, is renowned for its tri-colored crater lakes. The crater lakes have continuously changed color over the years, likely due to the mineral makeup in the water. Sometimes they’re green, black, brown, red, blue, etc. The lakes are very sacred among the locals, who believe that they’re the final resting spots of departed souls. Moni is the closest town to the lakes; from there you can take public transportation to the park. Admission to the park is 150,000 IDR.

Indonesia Travel Costs

The lush green rice fields of Bali, Indonesia surrounded by towering jungle

Accommodation – A bed in a dorm hostel dorm can cost as little as 55,000 IDR but most places are closer to 100,000 IDR. For a private double room, prices start around 175,000 IDR. Free Wi-Fi is standard and some hostels offer self-catering facilities and free breakfast.

Most budget hotels begin at 300,000 IDR per night for a double room that usually includes free Wi-Fi and breakfast. For a three-star hotel, prices begin around 400,000 IDR per night.

Airbnb is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from around 300,000 IDR per night. For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 400,000 IDR per night. Book early, however, or prices can double.

If you’re booking through Booking.com, keep in mind that many of the listings are actually homestays and private residences.

Since hostels and homestays are so cheap, camping is not very common unless you’re on a guided trek.

Food – Food in Indonesia is heavily influenced by a number of cultures, most notably Chinese, Indian and Malay cultures. Lots of dishes have a rice (nasi) or noodle (mie) base and, in some cases, that’s the whole dish, such as with nasi ayam (chicken rice). Be sure to try the Balinese take on satay (where the meat is minced and wrapped on skewers) and babi guling , a delicious suckling pig that is roasted for hours. Another popular choice is oxtail soup. Be mindful that the food here can be a little spicy.

The food here is extremely cheap by Western standards, with street food costing under 10,000 IDR. It’s also delicious in part because much of it is based on fresh spices and herbs. Expect rice and noodle-based dishes such as nasi goreng (stir-fried rice with chicken, egg, and vegetables) and mie goreng (a spicy fried noodle dish with garlic, onion, meat, egg, and vegetables) as well as gado gado (comprising of steamed vegetables, tofu, tempeh, sometimes egg, and peanut sauce), and lots of satay.

For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, expect to pay around 25,000 IDR. For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with table service, prices start at 125,000 IDR per person. Western food is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at under 100,000 IDR for a meal. For the cheapest food and a fun experience, head to the night markets.

Fast food like Mcdonald’s costs around 50,000 IDR for a combo meal. A beer at the bar costs around 30,000 IDR.

If you plan on cooking your own meals, a week’s worth of groceries costs between 450,000-500,000 IDR. However, food in the country is very cheap and I would encourage you to eat out as often as possible as kitchens are hard to come by!

Backpacking Indonesia Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 425,000 IDR per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, eat some street food, cook some meals, rent a bicycle to get around, and do mostly free activities like hiking and enjoying the beach. If you plan on drinking, add another 30,000-60,000 IDR to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 1,100,000 IDR per day, you can eat out at more restaurants, stay in a budget hotel or a private hostel room, rent a scooter to get around, drink more, enjoy some massages, and go diving.

On a “luxury” budget of 2,350,000 IDR or more per day, you can stay at a nicer hotel or villa, take taxis or private minivans to get around, eat Western food, drink more, and do any adventure activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury, however. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in IDR.

Indonesia Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

While Indonesia is super affordable, it’s also easy to splash out here (especially in Bali). To help you save money, here are some specific ways you can keep your spending down while you’re here:

  • Eat on the street – You can pick up tasty local fare for under 10,000 IDR. Street-side snacks, soups, and noodles are super affordable and super tasty.
  • Bargain hard – Nothing is ever at face value in Indonesia. Bargain with sellers as most of the time the prices they quote aren’t the prices you end up paying if you bargain!
  • Drink cheap – Save money on alcohol by heading to the local happy hours (or just buying your drinks at a local store instead of the bar). This is the cheapest way to drink!
  • Book online in advance – If you’re planning on hitting up some of Indonesia’s most popular destinations, such as Bali, it’s actually cheaper to book your accommodations (and sometimes tours) online in advance rather than showing up and trying to strike a deal.
  • Pay bus attendants directly – When you’re taking an intercity bus, don’t purchase a ticket from a ticket window. It’s cheaper to pay directly on the bus.
  • Rent a bike – In many places, such as Bali and Gili, you can easily get around on two wheels. Rent a bike for as little as 40,000 IDR per day. It’s a great way to get around on the cheap.
  • Take taxis – Taxis are essential for getting around in some parts of Indonesia, and they can be cheap. Just make sure the driver puts the meter on before you depart (or agree on a price before you get in).
  • Bring a filtered water bottle – Indonesia has a ton of plastic waste. It has so much that a lot of it just gets burned. You’ll see — and smell — it during your visit. Bring a reusable water bottle with a filter to save both money and the environment. I personally like Lifestraw .

Where to Stay in Indonesia

Looking for a place to stay during your trip? Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Indonesia:

  • PADI Backpackers House (Ubud)
  • Kememai Hostel (Ubud)
  • Warung Coco Hostel (Kuta)
  • Tribal Bali (Canggu)
  • Gili Beach Bum (Gili Trawangan)
  • My Mate’s Place (Gili Trawangan)
  • Wonderloft Hostel (Jakarta)

How to Get Around Indonesia

The ancient and iconic temple of Borobudur in beautiful Indonesia

Public transportation – Public buses aren’t really used for city transport except on Java. There’s an extensive network in Jakarta, known as the Transjakarta Busway. Fares cost 3,500-9,000 IDR for any destination in the network. You have to pay with a card that costs 40,000 IDR (it comes with a 20,000 IDR credit) from station ticketing offices.

Otherwise, most people get around by becak , a three-wheeled pedal or motor-powered cart. You should negotiate your fare before you get in; ask your hotel/hostel staff for up-to-date price estimates.

Taxis are also affordable, and they’re metered in major cities. Bluebird Taxis is available in most places, and they’re the most dependable company for metered taxis and English-speaking drivers. There’s a smartphone app that makes it really easy to order taxis. The starting rate is around 7,500 IDR and then 5,300 IDR per kilometer.

Grab (an Uber offspring) is a household name in Southeast Asia. It is convenient but sometimes costs even more than a taxi. Gojek is a similar option. Be forewarned: if you order a Grab or Gojek, you might wind up on the back of a motorbike.

Ferry – For traveling between islands, ferries start around 15,000 IDR for a ticket from East Java to West Bali, and the rates go up from there for other routes. Bali to the Gili Islands is 175,000 IDR (one way) on a speedboat.

While it’s not necessary to book in advance it’s a good idea to do so during peak season or on more popular routes. You can buy tickets on the ferry company’s website or via a ticket agent like 12go.asia.

Bus – Buses are the main way for locals and tourists to get around Indonesia. It’s a good idea to book your long-distance tickets in advance, especially if you want an air-conditioned ride. You can buy a ticket from a travel agent, or visit the bus terminal. Your accommodation may also be able to arrange your transportation.

A 12-hour journey on a bus costs around 170,000 IDR. A short journey, like the one from Kuta Beach to Ubud, is less than 80,000 IDR and takes one hour.

If your ride is a shorter one, you might end up on a bemos (mini-bus). In this case, negotiate your fare beforehand.

Train – In Indonesia, the cities of Java are well linked by train, including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo), and Banyuwangi (the ferry terminal for Bali). Economy class from Jakarta to Surabaya takes 10.5 hours and costs about 190,000 IDR, while an 8-hour executive class trip can cost from 620,000 IDR. Surabaya to Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo) takes 2-3 hours and costs 27,000 IDR for economy or 240,000 IDR for executive class. Surabaya to Banyuwangi (for Bali) takes 6-7 hours and costs as little as 56,000 IDR for economy or 235,000 IDR for executive class. You can reserve your tickets at tiket.com.

Flying – Garuda Indonesia is the country’s main airline offering international service as well as domestic flights. Lion Air and AirAsia also offer plenty of domestic routes, although Lion Air’s safety record is spotty and I wouldn’t advise traveling with them.

Flights between Jakarta and Bali start around 900,000 IDR each way, while Jakarta to Lombok starts around 1,200,000 IDR. Lombok to Bali is around 1,100,000 IDR. However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel and is only recommended if you have limited time.

When to Go to Indonesia

Indonesia has just two seasons: the wet season and the dry season. Dry season lasts from May to September while the rainy season occurs from October to April. The average daily temperature year-round is 28°C (80°F).

Overall, the best time of year to visit is between May and September when it’s dry and sunny. It’s still pleasant to visit during the rainy season, however, as rainfall usually comes as fast and intense downpours that only last a few hours.

The Nusa Tenggara region is more affected by the wet season which may sometimes result in flooding. The wet season may also be a problem if you’re looking to get off the beaten track in Indonesia, as muddy roads can sometimes keep you from getting around.

In Bali and Kalimantan, the extremes between seasons aren’t drastic. The dry season is the best time to climb the volcanoes, and the best time to dive is from April to September. (If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!)

How to Stay Safe in Indonesia

Indonesia is a safe place to backpack and travel. Violent crime is rare. Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime in Indonesia. It’s most common on public transit as it’s easy for thieves to grab your wallet or purse when you’re distracted by all the chaos around you. Staying alert and securing your valuables is the best way to prevent petty theft.

Credit card fraud is also common in Indonesia. To avoid this, it’s always best to pay with cash when possible. To avoid getting your information stolen at an ATM, enter a reputable bank to withdraw money from there.

There are a lot of small scams around the island and you can read about how to avoid these common travel scams here .

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here but the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.). The country is big and, while generally safe, there are certain spots you’ll want to stay more vigilant in. There are countless solo female travel blogs out there that can give you specific information on how to stay safe.

Earthquakes are common in Indonesia, owing to its location on the Ring of Fire (it experiences more earthquakes than any other country). Make sure you know where your exits are during an emergency. Also, download an offline map and languages translation pack in case you need it during an emergency situation where you don’t have mobile data/Wi-Fi.

If you experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

When in doubt, always trust your instincts. If a taxi driver seems shady, get out. If your hotel or accommodation is seedier than you thought, go somewhere else. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, in case of an emergency.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

In Indonesia poliovirus has been identified in the past year.

Travelers to Indonesia are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

Vaccine recommendations : Adults traveling to Indonesia who received a complete polio vaccination series as children may receive a single lifetime booster dose of inactivated polio vaccine; travelers who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated should receive a complete polio vaccination series before travel. Polio: For Travelers

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Indonesia.

If rabies exposures occur while in Indonesia, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination considerations include whether travelers 1) will be performing occupational or recreational activities that increase risk for exposure to potentially rabid animals and 2) might have difficulty getting prompt access to safe post-exposure prophylaxis.

Please consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether you should receive pre-exposure vaccination before travel.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Indonesia, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Indonesia. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Indonesia include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Indonesia. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Indonesia’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Indonesia. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Indonesia may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Indonesia, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Traffic flows on the left side of the road in Indonesia.

  • Always pay close attention to the flow of traffic, especially when crossing the street.
  • LOOK RIGHT for approaching traffic.

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Indonesia for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Important: Get Data When You Arrive in Indonesia

Sim or esim options.

Accessing data on your phone or tablet is important for your Indonesian travels.

When you land at an international airport in Indonesia, we recommend that you buy a SIM card with 3G or 4G immediately.

Check out these options below:

  • Buy a SIM card and pick up at Bali Airport here.
  • Buy a SIM Card and pick up at Jakarta Soekarno Hatta Airport here.

You’ll need to provide your passport as identification to purchase the SIM card.

Another option is to set up an eSIM ahead of time. Check out this eSIM option here.

International Phone Plan

If you have an international phone plan, feel free to use it when you’re in Indonesia.

For U.S. travelers looking for a new international phone plan, consider getting Google Fi, formerly Google Project Fi.

This phone plan has data access in over 200 countries and there is no additional charge. You can also get free calls and text over wifi.

We’ve used this phone plan since 2016, and have successfully used it in Indonesia many times.

Even though we live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for the past 5+ years, we still keep the U.S. phone number and phone plan.

Recommended Indonesia Travel Apps for General Travel

Google translate.

Indonesia’s official language is Indonesian, a slight variation of Malay. Due to the influences of Dutch colonization, Indonesia’s written language is Romanized. Therefore, you’ll recognize letters when reading signs and menus.

If there are Indonesian words that are unrecognizable, it’s recommended to use Google Translate .

The app is easy to use to translate Indonesian words into your native language.

The best function is to use the “live translation.” You can take either a photo or hold your camera against printed text with Indonesian words and the app will translate words immediately. Unfortunately, the app will not pick up handwritten words.

Sometimes the camera angle is wonky and the app translates the text into something weird. So, you’ll need to try a few times.

We use this function often if we eat at a local warung and the ordering system is done on a piece of paper.

Download Google Translate App: iOS / Android

Google Maps

Need to know where to go? Google Maps is the best app to use in Indonesia for directions.

If you need to find the nearest attraction, landmark, coffee shop, restaurant, etc. to your location, you can use Google Maps and search “X (ie: “coffee) near me.” You’ll need to have your location turned on your phone so Google Maps can find your exact location.

Besides maps, Google Maps has functionalities such as saving restaurants, attractions, and places that you want to visit. You can also take those pinned places to create private lists and organize them by themes.

While the internet connection is decent in Indonesia, there may be times when the connection is poor. Therefore, it’s recommended to save an “offline version” of the map.

Best Indonesia Apps for Transportation

Gojek is Indonesia’s ride-hailing app. The company name is based on the Indonesian word, ojek, which is a motorbike taxi.

The app is the same as Uber, U.S. ride-hailing app. Unfortunately, Uber is not available in Southeast Asia.

In the Gojek app, you request either a motorbike or car, input your starting and ending location, and the cost of the fare is listed in the app. Payment is done through the app via credit card or in person by cash with exact change.

It’s very convenient to take Gojek since you don’t need to worry about haggling and can follow the app to see where the driver is going.

Besides Indonesia, Gojek has expanded to other Southeast countries – Vietnam, Singapore , Thailand, Philippines. We live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and have seen Gojek motorbike drivers around the city.

Download Gojek App: iOS / Android

Grab is another ride-hailing app to use. The company is based in Singapore, yet the Grab app is used in the majority of Southeast Asia countries.

The app works exactly like Gojek and Uber. Everything is done within the app from requesting where to go and payment via credit card. You can pay in cash but you’ll need exact change. Motorbikes and cars are available for hire.

In Indonesia, we used a Grab car for shorter distances in major areas such as going from our hotel in Yogyakarta to local attractions and restaurants, and around Bali’s Seminyak area .

Download Grab App: iOS / Android

Other Tips for Gojek and Grab

Gojek and Grab have a similar green color for the company logo. Before riding any vehicle, check the license plate with your app so you have the correct driver.

If you’re hungry during your travels, you can use Gojek or Grab to order food delivery . The food will be delivered to your location of choice, such as hotel accommodation. All you need to do is pick it up from the driver when it arrives. It’s convenient if you don’t want to travel anywhere for food.

If you’re traveling in Bali , there are certain areas that do not allow ride-hailing cars for pick-up and drop-off. There will be signs that restrict ride-hailing cars.

Even though ride-hailing is allowed on the island, the local area prefers to support local taxi drivers and private drivers.

If you plan to take trains or flights within Indonesia, you may have difficulties using your international credit cards to process payment for the train or airline platform (ie: Lion Air or Air Asia).

Tiket.com is your answer to resolving these issues. You can book flights and train tickets on the platform and use your international credit cards.

We used them to buy train tickets from Surayaba to Yogyakarta and a flight on Lion Air from Yogyakarta International Airport to Bali Denpasar Airport. The process was easy. We received confirmation of our purchases via email and WhatsApp.

Here is the train that we took to go to Yogyakarta from Surabaya

If there are any issues with buying tickets with your credit card, you can contact Customer Service on WhatsApp and someone will assist. The Tiket.com team may need to whitelist your credit card number before payment.

Note: There is a small processing fee for using the site or app, but at least the process is hassle-free.

Helpful Indonesia Travel Apps for Accommodations

Booking.com.

Need to find a place to stay in Indonesia? Booking.com is an option to find your perfect accommodation.

The app is convenient to use. You input your city, travel dates, and filter the type of accommodations, amenities, pricing per night, refundable or nonrefundable room, and more.

Guests provide their rating for accommodations and share what went well and opportunities for improvement.

The pricing in the app is the final cost of the accommodation . Depending on the terms of the accommodation, you’ll pay ahead of time via credit card or at the property in local currency.

Your booking confirmation is saved in the app and can be accessed at any time.

Tip: If you use Booking.com often, you’ll be added as a “Genius Member” and earn loyalty levels. Depending on the property, you can earn a Genius Member discount. So, you’ll save money! It’s a win-win situation.

We use Booking.com to book accommodations for most of our trips.

Download Booking.com App: iOS / Android

Agoda is another app to find accommodations. It’s owned by the same parent company as Booking.com. Many visitors from Asia tend to use Agoda to book places to stay.

The app is the same as Booking.com. You can find accommodations based on date, location, and filter amenities based on your preferences. Reviews are also shared on the platform.

We noticed Agoda has the FOMO (fear of missing out) and act now call of action. They want you to book a place NOW.

The prices are not consistent. They change if you use a different browser (on the computer), or check on another day.

Plus, the final price is shared once you go through the booking process . Sometimes, the pricing looks cheaper on Agoda compared to Booking.com. But there aren’t any taxes and fees included yet. (Booking.com pricing already has these fees included.)

Download Agoda App: iOS / Android

Best Indonesia Travel Apps for Attractions and Tours

Klook is one of the best places to buy tickets to local attractions, arrange transportation, buy SIM cards, and go on tours. Klook is available in over 100 countries, and it’s very popular in Southeast Asia.

We like to use Klook as it saves us time when buying tickets . Sometimes the lines to the attractions are long, so this saves time.

The pricing on Klook is also reasonable . It’s usually the same price as the attraction or even cheaper. Saving money is always a positive!

When you buy something through the app, you’ll receive a confirmation. You’ll need to check the terms on how to redeem your ticket. Most of the time, you show the QR code through the app or PDF in the email to the main ticket office, and then can proceed.

If you write a review, you earn credits. These credits can be used for future purchases so you get a small discount.

Download Klook App: iOS / Android

Get Your Guide

Similarly to Klook, Get Your Guide is another platform to buy tickets to local attractions, tours, SIM cards, etc for 150+ countries.

The app is easy to use as you can find things to do based on location. Reading reviews from other guests is also helpful.

Once you purchase something through the app, a confirmation is saved. You can access the information at any time.

Download Get Your Guide App: iOS / Android

Tips for Klook and Get Your Guide

Sometimes the same tour operator is on both platforms for the same tour. You’ll need to compare both platforms on the pricing and what is offered. Klook tends to be slightly cheaper than Get Your Guide.

TripAdvisor

Looking for reviews on restaurants and attractions? TripAdvisor has tons of information to help with your Indonesia travel research.

Many things listed on TripAdvisor are “touristy” as the platform relies on reviews from other visitors. Sometimes the reviews are not authentic and are “shill reviews” so you’ll need to read through them and make your own judgment.

Besides reviews, they’ve expanded their offerings where you can book hotels, flights, and tours. (We still prefer to use Booking.com or Agoda for our hotel reservations.)

TripAdvisor also has a forum in a message board format. You can ask questions based on the country or city of interest, and other Tripadvisor members can answer them. The response rate varies depending on who is on the forum and whether the question has been answered before.

Important Indonesia Travel Apps for Communication

Many Indonesians use WhatsApp as a form of communication to stay in touch with others. It’s a helpful app to use daily.

To use the app, you can send messages, call, or do video calls to an individual or a group. The contact must have WhatsApp and a phone number.

In Indonesia, we used WhatsApp to communicate with our tour guides and private drivers in Bali and Yogyakarta and tour guides.

If you’re looking for private drivers for Bali or Yogyakarta, please contact us and ask. Happy to share the contact information of our drivers.

Download WhatsApp App: iOS / Android

Messenger, created by Facebook, is another way to communicate with others.

While Messenger is used to talk with friends, it can also be used to contact local businesses . If a restaurant, cafe, massage place, etc, use Facebook, then you can send a message through Messenger.

The response time will vary depending on how active the business is on Facebook. If there isn’t an answer within a reasonable time, you can give the business a call.

Travel smart with 3 Money Saving Tips for your next Bali Trip

While planning for my Bali trip, I have challenged myself to travel smart. Travel smart by spending wisely however  it’s not a budget Bali Trip. Therefore, I have summarised a total of 3 Bali saving tips for you!

The Indonesia government has came up with a new campaign #ItstimeforBali, if you are planning to visit Bali during this Covid period it’s important to get the latest updates on Bali reopening before considering to book a Bali trip.

As a Smart Budget-conscious travellers , it’s important to spend wisely. With the extra savings, you can spend it on other travel expenses. The ultimate secret to spend wisely is to be smart & do enough research to pay the best price!

3 Money saving tips for travelling to Bali

As Bali was just started to reopen, the price of the Bali tour packages might be in a mess. Therefore, these are the 3 essential money saving tips to consider when you are preparing to travel to Bali.

Travel smart with 3 Saving Tips for your next Bali Trip

# Bali Saving Tips 1: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)  or USD?

As a newbie travelling to Bali, I was confused do I have to pay in IDR or USD in Bali. After my trip to Bali, IDR is widely used in Bali and there isn’t once I was asked to pay in USD. The saving tip is to change IDR currency for your trip.

While preparing for my Bali trip, I had enquired several private drivers and travel agents to book a private tour package. I have encountered some of private drivers or travel agents quoting their price in IDR & USD.

Do inform them that you will make payment in IDR instead. Generally, transactions in IDR are more advantage for tourists to Bali.

Bali Saving Tips

#Bali Saving Tips 2: Research & Compare the price

The 2nd Bali saving tips applies widely to any of your travel trips. By researching and comparing prices, we can clinch the best price and make every of our Indonesian rupiah worth .

I was planning for a day trip to Nusa Lembongan Island from Bali. With a total of 6 pax, w e are looking for two-way hotel transfer & ferry ride and water activities tour packages.  With the crystal clear water at Lembongan island, there are plenty of things to do at Lembongan island such as snorkeling & surfing!

These are some real experiences that I have encountered with 4 different travel agents while I’m doing researching and inquiring before making a decision.

From the 4 agents, the prices quoted varies differently even for the similar tour packages. There seems to be no standard market price for Lembongan island tour packages.

Bali Saving Tips

After researching, I have realised that the fast boat tickets to Lembongan Island are usually inclusive of two-way hotel transfer and much cheaper if you book the fast boat tickets yourself.

The total price of package A was IDR 950,000 per pax & package B was just only IDR 650,000 per pax. A total savings of IDR 300,000 per pax (Approx USD$22)!!

I almost paid so much more for the similar services! Another saving tip is it’s definitely advisable to do some homework before any booking because they might take advantage of your lack of pricing knowledge & jack the prices up.

As the borders are slowly opening up, it’s time for Bali! As we are learning to live with Covid,  there is a need to stay cautious when it comes to our health and well-being. If you are concerned about the safety distancing on the flight & the possible exposure to Covid, taking a private jet is another good alternative to have more private space during the flight. You could search how much does it cost to fly in a private jet to see if this could be an option for you and eliminate some of the worry when it comes to the travel part of your vacation!

Bali Saving Tips

#Bali Saving Tips 3: Bargain!

Since there is no standard market price so the price is not justifiable. Therefore,  trying to bargain or negotiate with the drivers for a better price wouldn’t harm much.

Another essential Bali saving tips is after researching & comparing prices with different travel agents, I’m in a better position to bargain so there is a higher chance of me closing the deal with a better price.

Bali Saving Tips

From these  4 types of packages above and I had enquired them from different agents. These are the prices they have quoted me.

With these information, I’m able to compare and contrast and negotiate with the agent to lower down the price to my advantage.

As I have partially agree to book package C’s agent therefore I tried to discuss with him that there are other agents who are able to provide me with a better price & negotiate if he is able to decrease his price for me.

Surprisingly, after his discussion with other agents for water activities, he is able to decrease the price for us.

Bali Saving Tips

Package A is his original quotation with the total price of IDR 1,700,000 per pax to package B a total price of IDR 1,250,000 per pax. A total savings of IDR 450,000 per pax (Approx USD$34)!!

They might have quoted the prices randomly that is not within the market rate so to get the best price please be sure to do some research about your Bali Trip or any trip before booking any tour packages.

Even though it takes loads of time and extra effort to research & compare prices between each tour packages. It would eventually benefit us as we get to travel smart by spending wisely. With the extra savings, we could spend it on other travel expenses.

While Indonesia may be most famous for its tourist hub, Bali , the archipelago, as a whole, has grown in popularity in recent months. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported Indonesia replacing New Zealand as the top destination for short-term trips overseas by Australians last year—the first time since the Bureau started collecting travel records nearly 50 years ago.

Roughly 1.37 million Australians visited Indonesia in 2023. While some 86% took a holiday there, 7% visited friends or relatives. Whatever your reason for visiting the country, you’ll want to make sure you’re safeguarded against common mishaps that can arise while away, and even in the lead up to your holiday. Travel insurance for Indonesia can provide this protection, paying out should you fall ill or get injured and need treatment during your stay, if you lose your baggage or belongings or need to cancel your trip. Find out exactly how travel insurance for Indonesia works, what it covers and does not cover below.

If you’re sticking solely to Bali and its associated islands, then you can read more in our guide to travel insurance for the island of the gods.

If you’re planning to visit Indonesia, you’ll need travel insurance specifically for the destination. There are three main types to choose from:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Indonesia
  • Annual multi-trip: for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Indonesia or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker: for an extended stay in Indonesia, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

Depending on the insurer, and the type of policy you choose, you may have the option to take out cover for Indonesia alone, Asia or worldwide destinations. Note that insurers usually offer worldwide policies that include the US and destinations such as Canada, Greenland Mexico and the Caribbean, and worldwide policies that exclude them, depending on where you’re going, as medical costs are extremely high in this part of the world.

A good travel insurance policy will cover emergency medical costs should you fall ill or injure yourself while away. This may also extend to medical rescue, and repatriation costs, for severe cases where you need transporting to a hospital or back to Australia.

Cover for personal liability should you injure someone or damage another person’s property, and trip cancellation for reasons such as falling ill before the trip or suffering a bereavement should also be included as standard. You should also be able to claim for loss or theft of your luggage and belongings. Note that there’s typically a total limit on the amount you can claim for your possessions, as well as an individual limit for each type of item.

A policy may additionally include a number of other forms of cover, such as:

  • Personal money: the amount that can be claimed if your money is lost or stolen
  • Missed departure: covers the cost of additional accommodation and travel should an emergency cause the policyholder to miss their journey
  • Travel delay: pays out if your scheduled transport is late by typically a least 12 hours
  • Company insolvency: compensates you if your airline or hotel goes bust
  • Personal accident: pays out if an injury causes permanent disability or death

Insurers usually offer basic policies with few benefits and low cover levels and comprehensive policies that provide their widest range of cover and higher cover levels. They may also have one or more mid-level policies for anything in between.

Shopping around will allow you to find the best policy to suit your needs and budget. For help with finding a comprehensive policy, we’ve conducted in-depth research to find what we believe are the top 10 available .

It may be impossible for travel insurance for Indonesia to cover everything that can go wrong with a holiday, but it can cover a wide range of common scenarios, particularly if you opt for comprehensive cover. A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) sets out the specifics of what it does and does not cover. You should be able to access this on the insurer’s website, and read it before making a decision on whether it’s right for you.

Bear in mind that most insurers won’t cover a holiday where you’ve travelled to parts of Indonesia that the government’s Smartraveller website has on its “do not travel” list. To avoid this type of problem, it’s best to check the website for updates on Indonesia before purchasing a policy, and before departure. Smarttraveller will also advise if you should travel with caution, warning of risks, such as acts of terrorism, civil and political unrest and natural disasters.

Insurers will also likely reject claims resulting from intoxication from alcohol or drugs, and disorderly behaviour. If you’ve partaken in any sports and activities while away, it’s likely an insurer will only accept related injury claims if you wore the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, or harness.

Having a medical condition won’t necessarily hinder your chances of finding suitable cover for Indonesia, but you may find you’ll have to shop around a little more.

Only some insurers provide cover for what they term “pre-existing medical conditions”. These are conditions that you had before taking out the policy. Those that do provide this type of cover usually raise their premiums to do so, owing to the heightened risk that you’ll make a medical-related claim while away. The policy premium—the price of the policy—will often rise with the severity of a condition. This means cover for a heart condition will be more expensive than for diabetes, for example.

When running quotes on the sites of insurers that provide pre-existing medical cover, you’ll be taken to a medical screening section of the application. Make sure to state what conditions you have and answer the questions about them. This ranges from whether, and how often you take medication, to when you last saw a practitioner concerning your condition. If you later make a claim relating to a condition that you did not declare or detailed inaccurately, an insurer could refuse it.

Insurers refer to a number of factors when calculating how much you must pay for cover. This includes the number of people travelling, and the holiday destination and duration.

More mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions will likely be charged more than younger travellers and those without conditions, as insurers deem them as high-risk travellers that will likely need to claim while away.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in Indonesia, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $241, while comprehensive cover started at around $226, with the most expensive policy costing just under $324.

Running quotes on travel insurer websites will allow you to make side-by-side comparisons of their policies based on the types of cover they offer, the various cover levels and prices. Looking through the offerings of a number of insurers can help with finding a deal on the cover you need.

When running a quote you will need to enter details about yourself, anyone else travelling with you and your trip. This includes your name, the age of all travellers, your holiday destination and duration. If pre-existing cover is available, you will also be taken through a medical screening, so the insurer can build a medical profile on each traveller.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Indonesia?

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for travelling to Indonesia. However, it is recommended by Smartraveller, which advises taking out a comprehensive policy that covers all emergency medical costs, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation. Without it, you could be faced with bills for thousands of dollars, which the Australian government will not pay.

What is required to enter Indonesia from Australia?

Australians visiting or transiting through Indonesia should apply for an e-Visa on arrival , at least 48 hours before travelling. You can alternatively get a Visa on Arrival at some international airports, seaports or land crossings.

To apply for an e-Visa on arrival or the Visa on arrival, you need to have an ordinary (non-emergency) passport that will remain valid at least six months after your arrival in Indonesia. Smarttraveller also advises ensuring your passport has a minimum six months validity from your departure from Indonesia, to avoid any issues with leaving the country or with an onward or return flight. You’ll also need to complete an e-customs declaration within three days of departure to Indonesia.

The Bali Provincial Government has introduced a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 ($14.56 AUD) per person for foreign tourists visiting Bali. The levy is separate from the e-Visa on Arrival or the Visa on Arrival. You can pay the levy online before you travel or on arrival at a designated payment counter at Bali’s airport and seaport. Further detail can be found on the Bali Provincial Government’s website .

What is ‘excess’ in travel insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 – $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you ensure you can afford it. Some insurers may also offer an excess waiver if you pay an extra premium.

Ready to learn more about Indonesia travel insurance ? Just keep reading !

Having travel insurance for Indonesia is not currently a requirement to enter the country. However, just because Indonesian travel insurance isn’t mandatory doesn’t mean purchasing some isn’t a good idea.

Sunset swin at Gili Trawangan, best indonesia travel insurance

In fact, buying Indonesia travel insurance ensures that you’ll have coverage if you fall ill, miss a flight, lose your luggage, and more. Having travel health insurance coverage is especially important, since receiving medical treatment in Indonesia without insurance can leave you with a hefty bill to pay out of pocket (I learned this from personal experience, as you’ll find out). That’s why, ultimately, travel insurance is worth having .

Your age, nationality, and the length and cost of your trip will all affect the price of your Indonesian travel insurance . As such, if you’re interested in getting cheap travel insurance , taking a shorter trip and spending less on trip costs will save you some money.

To give you an idea of how much Indonesia travel insurance costs, I’ve used the example of a 30-year-old American from Pennsylvania who is traveling to Indonesia for a week and whose trip costs $2,500 to generate quotes from four companies.

*price used for example

As you can see from the chart above, Heymondo is the best overall option for travel insurance to Indonesia . On the other hand, if you want to save money or just need travel health insurance, SafetyWing is another fantastic choice. Of course, all four of these Indonesian travel insurance plans have their merits, so you can’t go wrong with any of them .

1. Heymondo , the best Indonesia travel insurance

Heymondo has emerged as one of the best travel insurance companies for good reason. Their travel insurance for Indonesia boasts the best travel- and medical-related coverage of all the plans I compared. Moreover, even with this high amount of coverage across all categories, the Top plan is still extremely affordable.

Heymondo, best travel insurance for indonesia

Best of all, you’ll never have to file a claim to get reimbursed for medical expenses. Instead, the Heymondo team will arrange payments directly with the medical center, so you won’t have to pay anything out of pocket. On top of that, the Top plan’s $0 deductible means 100% of your medical costs will be covered by Heymondo.

If you’d prefer to save a little money or just want travel health insurance for Indonesia , SafetyWing is your best bet. Otherwise, Heymondo is by far the best overall option for Indonesia travel insurance .

We have used Heymondo for years and they always provide the best customer service. You can get a discount for one of their policies just for being our reader.

2. SafetyWing , a great travel health insurance for Indonesia

If you’re looking for travel medical insurance for Indonesia , there’s no better option than SafetyWing . Not only will you benefit from an extremely affordable plan with top medical coverage, but you’ll also enjoy worldwide coverage.

SafetyWing, best travel insurance to indonesia

Even better, if you decide to keep traveling, you can easily extend your plan and choose to have it automatically renew every month while you’re abroad. You’ll also have some limited travel-related coverage, including trip interruption and travel delay coverage, but the coverage won’t be as comprehensive as it is with an Indonesian travel insurance plan like Heymondo ’s.

Additionally, SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance plan has a $250 deductible for medical expenses. This means you’ll have to pay $250 toward any medical bills you incur before SafetyWing covers the remaining balance. As such, it may be worth paying a little more upfront for Indonesian travel insurance so you can have a $0 deductible.

3. World Nomads , a top Indonesian travel insurance for adventurers

While World Nomads ’ Standard plan offers solid Indonesian travel insurance coverage, its main appeal is its adventure activities and sports coverage. If you’re planning on having an active trip filled with diving, surfing, and more, this travel insurance to Indonesia is a must-buy.

WorldNomads insurance, best indonesian travel insurance

The Standard plan also provides good coverage in all medical- and travel-related coverage categories. It even offers a $0 deductible for medical expenses. However, you can get higher amounts of coverage in all categories for a lower price with Heymondo .

Because of this, I only recommend purchasing World Nomads’ travel insurance for Indonesia if you know you’ll be doing lots of sports and activities.

4. IMG , a reliable travel insurance to enter Indonesia

IMG is a travel insurance company that many travelers trust for everything from Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance and travel insurance for pre-existing conditions to trip cancellation insurance . As you might expect, their travel insurance for Indonesia is just as reliable as their other plans and provides a more-than-sufficient amount of coverage in all categories.

IMG, best indonesia travel insurance

The $0 deductible for medical expenses is also a plus. Still, the IMG iTravelInsured SE plan is the most expensive of all the plans I compared, so it’s not the best choice for travelers who are trying to save money. However, the good news is that you can get even a higher amount of coverage for a lower price with Heymondo .

Indonesia travel insurance requirements

If you’re planning to purchase travel insurance for Indonesia , there are a few types of coverage your plan should include.

Emergency medical expense coverage is the most important type of coverage for any insurance plan. Of course, no one wants to get injured or fall ill while they’re traveling, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Similarly, having COVID-19 coverage is key since quarantine meal and accommodation costs can add up quickly.

Tegalalang rice paddies, travel health insurance for indonesia

You should also ensure that you have evacuation and repatriation coverage. That way, your transportation fees will be covered if you need to be sent back to your home country for medical treatment or for political reasons.

Trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, and baggage coverage are less crucial insurance features overall. Still, if they’re important to you, look for Indonesian travel insurance with a high amount of travel-related coverage .

As I’ve already mentioned, there’s no entry requirement to have travel insurance for Indonesia . Even so, it’s always a good idea to have travel insurance – I know from firsthand experience!

I was on a 7-day trip to Bali and visited the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud. There, I let one of the monkeys climb on me, and unfortunately, it bit me! Luckily, I had travel insurance for Bali , so all of my medical bills were covered. Otherwise, my medical treatment would have cost me a pretty penny.

Now, I’m not saying that you’ll also get bitten by a monkey when you visit Indonesia (I really hope not!), but my story is a great reminder that unexpected things can happen anytime while you’re traveling. That’s why it’s safest (and smartest for your wallet!) to purchase Indonesia travel insurance .

Heymondo is the best choice for most travelers since it’s affordable and offers fantastic travel- and medical-related coverage.

Another excellent option, particularly if you just need medical coverage, is SafetyWing . Either way, as long as medical expenses, COVID-19, and repatriation are covered by your Indonesian travel insurance , you’ll be all set for an amazing trip.

What's The Best eSIM For Indonesia? We've Ranked the Top Providers in 2024

Jan Watermann, writer at Monito.com

Known for its tropical islands like Bali and Lombok, ancient temples, and pristine nature, Indonesia isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Indonesia at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Indonesia and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Indonesia by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Telkomsel.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Indonesia and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Indonesia . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Indonesia, for example, Airalo works directly with Telkomsel to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Indonesia range from $5.50 to $40 and include between 1 GB and 20 GB of data. Ordinary travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone, and it's very quick. In our test, we just took two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). Moreover, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app if you start running low on data during your trip. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To learn more about this excellent eSIM provider, look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Indonesia, Holafly's data packages cost between $21 and $139 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Indonesia, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Indonesia like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Best For a Free 100 MB Test: GigSky

travel smart indonesia

GigSky is a popular US-based eSIM provider that offers a unique opportunity: it lets you download and install a free eSIM with 100 MB of allowance so you can test how eSIMs work without being obligated to pay more once you've used up your data.

Like Airalo, GigSky offers fixed data plans (normally just 1 GB, 3 GB, or 5 GB) in around 200 destinations worldwide, including Indonesia. And like Holafly, it also offers unlimited plans. In addition, GigSky offers regional and global plans, with all of its data allowances competitively priced and its rates neck-in-neck with those of the other providers on this list.

Most interestingly (unlike Airalo and Holafly), Gigsky offers special data plans for flights and cruises . Although they're pricier than the normal plans, they could be useful for you if you'd like to connect in the air or at sea.

Regardless of what kind of data plan you're looking for, GigSky probably has you covered—and at great rates to boot. Sign up now for a no-obligation free 500 MB and top up your data later if you need more.

Considering GigSky? Use code MONITO10 at checkout to get 10% off your purchase. Go to GigSky now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

travel smart indonesia

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's,

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Indonesia or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Indonesia?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Indonesia, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Indonesia. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Indonesia without unexpected roaming charges.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Indonesian trip? You'll probably pay more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Indonesia are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Indonesia is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Indonesian SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Indonesia. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Indonesia,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Indonesia (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Indonesian networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Indonesian vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Indonesia from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Indonesia With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Indonesia with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Indonesia.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Indonesia to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Indonesia (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Indonesian phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Indonesia

Are you planning a trip in Indonesia, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Indonesia, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Indonesia, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Indonesia overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo,
  • GigSky : Best free eSIM to test,
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

FAQ About The Best eSIM For Indonesia

Yes, eSIMs are safe to use in Indonesia. That's because commercial eSIM technology adheres to international security and encryption standards to store and securely access your mobile network information.

Generally, yes, but it depends on your individual needs. While eSIMs offer the advantage of remotely purchasing a SIM before you travel, making them convenient for frequent travellers, physical SIMs might still be preferable for you if you have an older smartphone model, for example.

No, eSIMs generally aren't free, with the cost in Indonesia varying based on mobile service providers and their pricing plans. However, GigSky offers you a free 500 MB test on all of its eSIMs, including to Indonesia, with no obligation to pay further once you've used the data up. This is a good deal if you'd like to access some free data or understand how eSIMs work.

To purchase an eSIM, you can generally expect to pay rates that range from $5.50 to $40 to purchase an eSIM with a minimal data package for Indonesia with a provider like Airalo.

Yes, you can use an eSIM on a locked phone, provided your phone is compatible with eSIM technology.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Indonesia, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. If you'd like to call or SMS, consider finding an eSIM deal that includes airtime or minutes or use a service like Rebtel , which, for a tiny fee, provides you with a local number in place of your overseas contact's foreign number, making calling abroad significantly cheaper.

So, why are eSIMs a big deal for Bali-goers? Imagine landing in Bali, and instead of searching for a local SIM card shop, you’re already set up with internet on your phone . That’s the magic of eSIMs! They let you arrange your mobile data plan before you even pack your bags, giving you one less thing to worry about on your travels. You can also do it at the airport

In this guide, we’ll dive into the world of eSIMs in Bali. We’ll explore what they are, how they work, and why they might just be your best travel buddy for your next Bali adventure. Whether you’re a tech whiz or new to the eSIM game, we’ve got you covered with all the info you need to make your Bali trip smooth and connected. Let’s get started!

eSim Explained

What is an esim.

An eSIM, or electronic SIM, is like a regular SIM card, but with a twist. It’s built right into your phone. You don’t need a tiny physical card to put in your phone anymore. Instead, an eSIM is a small chip that’s already inside your phone. It does everything a regular SIM card does, but it’s all digital.

eSIM vs. Physical SIM Cards

So, what’s the difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM card? Here are the key points:

  • Physical SIM Cards : These are the tiny cards you insert into your phone. You might have swapped them when traveling to use a local network.
  • eSIMs : They are built into your phone. You can activate them with a simple QR code from your eSIM provider. No more swapping tiny cards!

Advantages of Using an eSIM for Travelers

Travelers love eSIMs for many reasons:

  • Convenience : You can set up your eSIM before you even leave for your trip. No more hunting for a SIM card shop after you land.
  • Multiple Plans : You can have more than one plan on an eSIM. This means you can keep your home number and add a travel data plan.
  • Easy Switching : Switching between plans is easy. You can do it right from your phone’s settings.

In Bali, where staying connected is key to a smooth trip, an eSIM can be a real game-changer. You can start using your phone right after you land, without the hassle of finding and setting up a local SIM card. Plus, with an eSIM, you’re ready to explore Bali’s beautiful beaches, temples, and markets, all while staying connected!

Why Consider an eSIM for Your Bali Trip?

travel smart indonesia

Pre-Purchase and Easy Setup

One of the biggest perks of an eSIM is how easy it makes your travel prep. You can buy and set up your eSIM before you even pack your suitcase. This means, as soon as your plane touches down in Bali, you’re all set with internet on your phone. No more waiting in lines at the airport or searching for a local SIM card shop. It’s all about starting your Bali adventure the moment you arrive, hassle-free.

Real Experiences from Users

People who’ve traveled to Bali and used eSIMs have shared their stories online, and they’re pretty happy with their experiences. Many say that eSIMs are super convenient, especially for staying connected from the get-go. A traveler told how they loved being set up with internet right after landing, making their transit to the hotel a breeze. Another user mentioned the ease of using apps like WhatsApp for calls and messages, thanks to their eSIM’s reliable data connection.

Keep Your Original Number

travel smart indonesia

Another great thing about eSIMs? You can keep your usual number active. This is perfect for those who want to stay reachable on their regular number while using data from the eSIM in Bali. It’s like having the best of both worlds – your familiar number for calls and a local data plan for all your internet needs. No more juggling two phones or worrying about missing important calls from back home.

In summary, an eSIM offers a blend of convenience, connectivity, and flexibility that’s hard to beat for travelers. It lets you dive into your Bali experience with one less thing to worry about, keeping you connected and ready to explore this beautiful island.

Popular eSIM Options for Bali

Buying an eSIM for Bali: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting an eSIM for your Bali trip is straightforward. Here’s a simple guide on how to purchase and set up your eSIM, along with some handy tips to make sure everything goes smoothly.

How to Purchase an eSIM Online

  • Choose Your Provider : Start by picking an eSIM provider. Airalo and Bikago are popular choices among travelers to Bali. Check out their websites to compare plans and prices.
  • Select a Plan : Once you’ve chosen a provider, select a data plan that suits your needs. Consider how long you’ll be in Bali and how much data you think you’ll use.
  • Make the Purchase : Buy the eSIM plan on the provider’s website. You’ll typically need to create an account and provide some basic information.
  • Receive Your QR Code : After purchasing, you’ll get a QR code. This code is key to setting up your eSIM, so keep it handy.

Setting Up the eSIM Upon Arrival in Bali

  • Connect to Wi-Fi : When you land in Bali, connect to a Wi-Fi network. This is important for the initial setup of your eSIM.
  • Scan the QR Code : Go to your phone’s settings and look for the option to add a cellular plan. Scan the QR code provided by your eSIM provider.
  • Follow On-Screen Instructions : Your phone will guide you through the rest of the setup. It’s usually just a few simple steps.
  • Choose Your eSIM as the Primary Data Line : Make sure to set your eSIM as the primary data line if you’re also keeping your home SIM for calls.

Tips for Ensuring Compatibility and Avoiding Common Issues

  • Check Phone Compatibility : Before purchasing an eSIM, make sure your phone is unlocked and compatible with eSIM technology.
  • Understand Data Limits : Be clear about how much data your plan includes and what happens if you exceed it.
  • Keep Your QR Code Safe : Don’t lose the QR code. You’ll need it for the setup, and it can only be used once.
  • Test Before You Travel : If possible, try setting up and using your eSIM before you leave for Bali. This way, you can sort out any issues while still at home.

By following these steps, you can enjoy a smooth start to your Bali adventure with your eSIM keeping you connected. Remember, a little preparation goes a long way, especially when it comes to tech and travel!

Physical SIM vs. eSIM in Bali: Making the Right Choice

Scale with questionmarks

When you’re heading to Bali, deciding between a physical SIM and an eSIM can be a bit of a puzzle. Let’s break down the situations where you might prefer a physical SIM, how to get one, and what customers have to say about their experiences.

When to Choose a Physical SIM

  • Need for a Local Number : If you need a local phone number in Bali for calls and texts, a physical SIM is the way to go. eSIMs usually offer data only.
  • Phone Compatibility : Not all phones support eSIMs. If your phone doesn’t, a physical SIM is your alternative.
  • Longer Stays : For extended stays, a physical SIM might offer more flexible and cost-effective plans.

Buying and Setting Up a Physical SIM in Bali

  • Where to Buy : You can buy a physical SIM card at the airport, local shops, or official telecom stores in Bali.
  • Choose a Provider : Popular providers include Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Indosat. Each has different plans and coverage.
  • Registration Process : You’ll need to register the SIM with your passport. Some shops will do this for you.
  • Activation : Once the SIM is inserted and registered, it’s usually activated immediately. You can top up with credit as needed.

User Experiences

  • Coverage and Cost : Many travelers have found that physical SIMs offer good coverage and are quite affordable. Telkomsel, in particular, gets mentioned often for its extensive network.
  • Ease of Purchase : Travelers frequently note that buying a SIM at the airport is straightforward, though slightly more expensive than in town.
  • Flexibility : Users appreciate the flexibility of topping up credit for calls, texts, and data, especially for longer trips.

In summary, while eSIMs offer convenience and keep you connected from the moment you land, physical SIMs have their own advantages, especially for those needing a local number or staying in Bali for a longer period. Your choice will depend on your specific needs, phone compatibility, and the length of your stay. Both options have their merits, and many travelers have had positive experiences with each.

Tips for Using eSIMs in Bali

bali Gates

When it comes to data usage and coverage, it’s crucial to keep an eye on how much data you’re consuming. Tools like MyData Manager can be really helpful for this. Coverage in Bali is generally good, especially in popular areas like Ubud and Canggu, but it’s always a good idea to check the coverage map provided by your eSIM provider. To conserve your data, make use of Wi-Fi in hotels, cafes, and restaurants whenever you can.

If your phone supports dual SIMs, you can have both an eSIM and a physical SIM active at the same time. This setup is perfect for keeping your home number active while using the eSIM for data in Bali. You can easily manage which SIM you use for calls, texts, and data in your phone’s settings. This flexibility allows you to switch between your home and local numbers as needed.

It is suggested purchasing and setting up your eSIM before you arrive in Bali. This ensures that you’re connected right from the moment you land. It’s also important to choose an eSIM plan that suits your length of stay and anticipated data usage. Consider how often you’ll use data-intensive applications like maps and social media.

In case you run into issues with your eSIM, such as activation problems or connectivity issues, there are a few things you can try. Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi and that the QR code for your eSIM has been scanned correctly. If you’re facing connectivity problems, toggling airplane mode or restarting your phone can often resolve these issues. If your data seems to be running out faster than expected, check for any background apps that might be using data and adjust your settings accordingly.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can enjoy a smooth and connected experience in Bali with your eSIM. A bit of preparation and understanding of how to manage your eSIM can make a big difference in ensuring a trouble-free trip.

In conclusion, using an eSIM in Bali offers numerous benefits that can significantly enhance your travel experience. With the convenience of pre-purchasing and setting up your eSIM before arrival, you can enjoy immediate connectivity as soon as you land. This modern technology allows you to maintain your original phone number while accessing data services in Bali, making it easier to stay in touch with friends and family back home.

It’s important to consider both eSIMs and physical SIM cards based on your individual needs. While eSIMs provide a high level of convenience and efficiency, physical SIM cards might be a better choice in certain situations, especially if your device doesn’t support eSIM technology or if you prefer having a local phone number for calls and texts.

Ultimately, the choice between an eSIM and a physical SIM card should be based on your specific requirements, the compatibility of your device, and your communication needs while in Bali. By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision that ensures a connected and enjoyable trip to this beautiful Indonesian island.

travel smart indonesia

Are you planning to travel to Indonesia and thinking about staying connected with an e-sim card? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know about using an e-sim card when traveling to Indonesia including a comparison of the best Indonesia e-sim cards for 2024.

Don’t waste money on high roaming charges, read my recommendations below and order an e-sim card for Indonesia on the internet and get connected in just a couple minutes. Below you will find up to date prices as per June 2024, including all specifications per e-sim card.

This guide will show you where and when to order an e-sim card for Indonesia, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards for Indonesia, an answer to all FAQ and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for traveling to Indonesia online.

Since 2012 I am traveling the world full time and eventually I turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . In 2022 I visited 62 different countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used throughout the last two years.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. Providing essential travel tips is what made me start writing sim card guides from every country I visited and now on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world.

Of course Traveltomtom also wrote a complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for Indonesia in 2024  as well as a guide for buying a tourist sim card in Bali .

Let me start with giving you my e-sim card recommendation for Indonesia. These are my favorite e-sim cards for traveling to Indonesia in 2024.

Some links in this article about the best e-sim cards for Indonesia are affiliate links. If you buy any product after clicking on an affiliate link I will earn a small commission. Don’t worry this is at absolutely no extra cost to you!

My recommendation

Traveltomtom rates the following two e-sims as the best e-sim cards for traveling to Indonesia in 2024:

1. Nomad e-sim card for $39 USD

  • 20 GB data-only e-sim
  • Valid in Indonesia only
  • Operates on the Telkomsel 4G/LTE network
  • Valid for 45 days
  • Only $1.95 USD per Gigabyte

2. Indotel e-sim card from Airalo for $24.75 USD

  • 10 GB data-only e-sim
  • Valid for 30 days
  • $2.48 USD per Gigabyte

The best value e-sim card for Indonesia are the Indonesia e-sim cards from Nomad . Nomad has more Indonesia e-sim plans but $1.95 USD per Gigabyte on their 20 GB data plan is the best one.

A good second best is an Airalo e-sim card for Indonesia. They are slightly more expensive but Traveltomtom has in general always very good experiences with Airalo.

Both e-sim cards are data-only e-sim cards and incoming and outgoing calls or sms are not supported. Data is only valid in Indonesia.

Is Indonesia one of your stops on a trip to Asia then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for traveling in Asia . There are e-sim cards that cover all countries in South East Asia and some even pretty much all of of Asia and Middle East.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Indonesia or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Indonesia.

However, you can still order a sim card for Indonesia on the internet before your trip. Check out Traveltomtom’s complete guide for buying a sim card for Indonesia in 2024  or find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Indonesia

Buying an e-sim card on arrival in Indonesia is very limited. As per June 2024 Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat/Ooredoo do still NOT provide e-sim cards for tourists. They only offer physical prepaid sim cards at the international airports of Bali and Jakarta as well as in their official phone stores across Indonesia.

The only mobile internet operator that offers e-sim cards for tourists on arrival in Indonesia is Smartfren. Am I a fan? No! Why? More about that later.

Luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell e-sim cards for Indonesia. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Indonesia from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

These are the 3 big e-sim card providers tested and reviewed multiple times by Traveltomtom that sell great e-sim card plans for Indonesia:

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country around the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions is the only sim card provider that also offers international prepaid sim cards for Indonesia . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to Indonesia and it is plug and play when you arrive in the Indonesia.

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for Indonesia.

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering an e-sim card.

Normally SimOptions is always one of my top recommendations but the SimOptions e-sim card plans for Indonesia are much more expensive compared to Airalo and Nomad.

simoptions esim card plans for indonesia 2024

Here are the SimOptions data-only e-sim card plans for Indonesia for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $4.90 USD
  • 3 GB data for 15 days = $12.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 15 days = $16.90 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $34.90 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $49.90 USD

Click here to order a SimOptions e-sim card for Indonesia .

These data-only e-sim cards are provided by SimOptions and are only valid in Indonesia. Unfortunately SimOptions doesn’t specify which mobile network operator in Indonesia they use, neither is there information if these e-sim cards are 5G ready. Trust me, when they would be 5G ready SimOptions would mention it, so the max data speed on these Indonesia e-sim cards from SimOptions is 4G/LTE.

The SimOptions e-sim cards for Indonesia do NOT come with a phone number and they do not offer incoming/outgoing calls or sms services. The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in Indonesia. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Airalo is another very reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your e-sim card for Indonesia through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Why using Airalo? When it comes to Indonesia e-sim cards Airalo has much better e-sim card plans than SimOptions and is therefore also recommended as one of the best e-sim cards for Indonesia.

airalo esim card plans for indonesia 2024

Here are Indonesia e-sim card plans from Airalo for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $5.5 USD
  • 2 GB data for 15 days = $8 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $11 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $16.5 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $24.75 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $40 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for Indonesia from Airalo .

The Airalo e-sim cards for Indonesia are from Indotel and operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telkomsel, the best mobile data network in Indonesia. Unfortunately the Airalo Indotel e-sim cards for Indonesia are not 5G ready. Side note, there isn’t much 5G yet in Indonesia as of 2024.

In pretty much all the amazing places to visit in Indonesia you will find a 4G/LTE signal tho and the data speed is reasonably good these days.

For more info about the best 4G/5G network in Indonesia check my complete guide for the best prepaid sim card for tourists in Indonesia in 2024 , including network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

All the Airalo e-sim cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check out the Airalo website .

Last but not least there is Nomad and actually Nomad has the cheapest Indonesia e-sim card plans as well as Indonesia e-sim cards with unlimited data, but be careful, it is unlimited with a lot of annoying restrictions.

Traveltomtom does not recommend the Nomad e-sim cards for Indonesia with unlimited data, but recommends the normal Nomad e-sim cards for Indonesia. They worked totally fine.

nomad esim card plans for indonesia 2024

Here are the Nomad e-sim card plans for Indonesia:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $6 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $12 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $16 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $23 USD
  • 15 GB data for 30 days = $35 USD
  • 20 GB data for 45 days = $39 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for Indonesia from Nomad .

As I mentioned, Nomad has the cheapest e-sim cards for Indonesia and they go as low as $1.95 USD per Gigabyte, which makes a Nomad e-sim card for Indonesia the best-buy e-sim.

Nomad e-sim cards 'unlimited' data

nomad esim card plans for indonesia unlimited data 2024

Nomad also sells e-sim card plans for Indonesia with unlimited data. However, unlimited does NOT mean unlimited on max speed!

After 2 GB data usage per day the data speed is reduced to 512 Kbps, that is something like an E-signal, barely good enough for WhatsApp. You will NOT be able to use social media anymore for 24 hours, until max data speed is restored.

Therefore Traveltomtom does NOT recommend the Nomad e-sim cards for Indonesia with unlimited* data!

Because of this reason they are left out of the comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling in Indonesia. More info about e-sim cards with unlimited data in the FAQ about e-sim cards below.

The Nomad e-sim cards for Indonesia are from Singtel. These data-only e-sim cards for Indonesia from Singtel are also not 5G ready, only 4G/LTE network is supported and they operate on the network of Telkomsel and Smartfren. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported.

nomad indonesia esim specification

The Nomad Indonesia e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in Indonesia. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Holafly is another well-known e-sim provider but unlike other providers they work with e-sims with unlimited data. However, there is a catch and that is a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy). More about it later, but it could mean that you suddenly have a very slow data connection for a whole day until it resets.

Here are the Holafly e-sim plans for Indonesia with unlimited data per day:

  • 1 day 'unlimited' data = $6 USD
  • 2 days 'unlimited' data = $10 USD
  • 3 days 'unlimited' data = $13 USD
  • 4 days 'unlimited' data = $16 USD
  • 5 days 'unlimited' data = $21 USD
  • 6 days 'unlimited' data = $25 USD
  • 7 days 'unlimited' data = $29 USD
  • 8 days 'unlimited' data = $31 USD
  • 9 days 'unlimited' data = $35 USD
  • 10 days 'unlimited' data = $37 USD
  • 11 days 'unlimited' data = $40 USD
  • 14 days 'unlimited' data = $48 USD
  • 20 days 'unlimited' data = $64 USD
  • 30 days 'unlimited' data = $75 USD

As you can see the Holafly e-sim cards for traveling to Indonesia are much more expensive than other e-sims.

The Holafly e-sim cards for Indonesia are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These e-sims do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly e-sims operate on the 4G/LTE network of Telkomsel.

You can use a hotspot on the Holafly e-sim cards for the UAE, but it is capped at 500 MB per day.

Why not truly unlimited, but 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data. More info later.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data and therefore it is not my first recommendation when looking for an e-sim for Indonesia.

Also, Traveltomtom tested Holafly in another country and was very disappointed with the overall performance. Holafly was using the weakest mobile data network in that country and people all around me constantly had connection but I was pretty much offline for a whole week. Even though we were in big cities, I constantly had to ask for the public WiFi of my hotels, restaurants and bars because my Holafly e-sim was super slow.

Smartfren is one of the mobile internet operators in Indonesia. After Telkomsel, Indosat/Ooredoo and XL Axiata it is in fact the smallest mobile internet provider in Indonesia.

However, Smartfren is the only provider that offers e-sim cards for tourists. All the other providers only offer physical prepaid sim cards for tourists. Updated as per June 2024.

Keep in mind that a Smartfren e-sim card for traveling in Indonesia can only be bought on arrival in Indonesia in an official Smartfren store and at Bali Airport . At Jakarta Airport you can NOT buy an e-sim card at all.

You can NOT by a Smartfren e-sim card on the internet!

Smartfren offers the following e-sim card plans for Indonesia:

  • 25 GB data for 30 days = 250,000 IDR - $15.9 USD
  • 30 GB data for 30 days = 300,000 IDR - $19.1 USD
  • 45 GB data for 30 days = 350,000 IDR - $22.3 USD
  • 60 GB data for 30 days = 450,000 IDR - $28.6 USD

As you can see the prices for Smartfren e-sim cards are much cheaper than the e-sim cards for Indonesia that you buy on the internet. Basically a Smartfren e-sim card is a local prepaid sim card in the form of an e-sim card.

A Smartfren e-sim card comes with an Indonesia phone number that starts with +62. Incoming calls are supported and outgoing calls can be made after adding extra calling credit to your e-sim card.

Keep in mind that Smartfren is the smallest mobile internet provider in Indonesia and it has the weakest 4G/LTE network. For more info check out my guide about the best Indonesia prepaid sim cards for tourists in 2024 .

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I told you before that I travel full time and I am on the road constantly. Pretty much every week I need another sim card to stay connected. In fact my last trip to Indonesia was in November 2023. Did I use an e-sim card? Yes, the Nomad e-sim card for Indonesia with 20 GB data.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for Indonesia?

cheapest esim card for indonesia 2024

The cheapest e-sim for Indonesia is a SimOptions e-sim card  with 1 GB data for 7 days for just $4.90 USD.

indotel cheap esim card plan for indonesia 2024

The  Airalo e-sim card for $5.5 USD  is a similar offer.

These e-sims are only valid in Indonesia and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Indonesia

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Indonesia without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Indonesia with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Indonesia so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

Overseas Data Roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you at pretty  much every amazing tourist destinations in Indonesia there is 4G/LTE available.

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends have asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Indonesia. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for Indonesia?

You can only buy an e-sim card for Indonesia on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Indonesia. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones ( SimOptions , Holafly,  Airalo and Nomad ) are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to Indonesia in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for Indonesia through one of the above recommended e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in Indonesia

There are 4 main mobile internet provider in Indonesia: Telkomsel, XL Axiata, Indosat/Ooredoo and Smartfren. Unfortunately the 3 biggest operators do NOT offer e-sim cards for tourists in Indonesia. The only internet provider that offers e-sim cards for tourists in Indonesia is Smartfren.

When you arrive in Indonesia and you want to buy a local sim card for tourists then only physical prepaid sim cards are available from Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat/Ooredoo.

Only at Bali Airport as well as official Smartfren stores across Indonesia tourists are able to register an e-sim card.

For more info about buying a prepaid sim card for tourists in Indonesia in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in Indonesia, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network.

Flying into Indonesia and landing in Jakarta or Bali then you can buy a tourist sim card for Indonesia on arrival at the airport. However, there are very limited e-sim cards sold at airports in Indonesia, pretty much only physical prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Also expect to pay tourist prices when buying a sim card at the airport. Check out my guides for buying a sim card in Bali and my guide for buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport .

When to order/activate an e-sim card for Indonesia?

You can order an e-sim card for Indonesia pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Indonesia or before. When in Indonesia you will need an internet connection to instal your e-sim card. Pretty much every international airport in Indonesia has free WiFi so you could use that to install your e-sim card. Just make sure it is a stable internet connection and therefore Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your e-sim card in your home country.

So my personal advice is to instal your e-sim card for Indonesia before you get into the plane and as soon as the plane lands you will be connected without any problems.

How do I know all this? Traveltomtom has visited Indonesia almost 10 times and traveled to Jakarta, Bali, Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Lombok, West - Papua and many more islands in Indonesia before.

For more info about my experiences buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport check out my blog about it or check out my vlog on YouTube from Jakarta Airport .

I also wrote a blog about buying a prepaid sim card for Bali , the best e-sim cards for Bali and there is also a vlog on my YouTube channel about my arrival at Bali Airport and buying a prepaid sim card for traveling in Bali .

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for Indonesia you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Indonesia e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your Indonesia e-sim card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Indonesia

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Indonesia e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Indonesia. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Indonesia or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Indonesia and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Indonesia recommended above ( SimOptions , Holafly,  Airalo and Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Indonesia.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Indonesia e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to Indonesia.

Can I keep my phone number from home with an Indonesia e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Indonesia e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with an Indonesia e-sim card?

No, unfortunately none of the by Traveltomtom recommended e-sim cards for Indonesia include calling and texting. All the e-sim cards from  SimOptions , Airalo , Holafly and Nomad are data-only e-sim cards and any incoming/outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

Does an Indonesia e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, none of the Indonesia e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet come with a phone number which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

In the above Indonesia e-sim card comparison you can find all the specifications per e-sim card.

Can I use 5G on an Indonesia e-sim card?

First of all don't get too excited about having 5G when traveling in Indonesia in 2024. There is still not much 5G around, the 5G network is very limited as of June 2024.

There are some e-sim cards that are 5G ready, but there the choice is very limited. All the  SimOptions  and  Airalo  e-sim cards are not 5G ready. The only 5G ready e-sim cards are the 'unlimited' data e-sim cards from Nomad. Recommended? NO! Read below why...

Are there e-sim cards for Indonesia with unlimited data?

Yes, there are Indonesia e-sim cards with unlimited data. As I mentioned before, Nomad also offers e-sim cards for Indonesia with unlimited data .

However, unlimited is NOT truly unlimited when you ask me. Their FUP (Fair Use Policy) is only 2 Gigabytes per day, which one can easily reach in a couple hours watching reels on Instagram. After you reach your FUP limit, your data speed will be reduced to 512 Kbps for 24 hours.

nomad indonesia esim specification unlimited data

That means for the next 24 hours you can only use WhatsApp and may be send an email. This of course is highly inconvenient and therefore Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards with unlimited* data for traveling in Indonesia.

Traveltomtom had a similar experience with Holafly e-sim cards with unlimited data.

Holafly is another e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data for Indonesia, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Therefore in general Traveltomtom would never recommend e-sim cards with unlimited data. Because unlimited is pretty much never unlimited! There are always restrictions and limitations. Traveltomtom prefers what you see is what you get...

The Nomad Indonesia e-sim cards  with 20 GB and the  Indotel e-sim card from Airalo  with 20 GB offer a lot of data and there is no real need for an e-sim card with unlimited data unless you want to upload your whole camera roll to a Google Drive or iCloud via 4G instead of WiFi.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Indonesia in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Indonesia, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards for Indonesia are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Indonesia prepaid sim cards mostly offer bigger data plans than e-sim cards and on top of that local prepaid sim cards come often with unlimited local calls and sms.

The big difference is that a local Indonesia prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Indonesia in a phone store or at the airport and NOT on the internet.

More info about the  best Indonesia prepaid sim cards for tourists can be found in my complete guide for buying a sim card for Indonesia in 2024.

international prepaid sim cards for indonesia 2024

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Indonesia. Some of them are great for Indonesia as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

If after visiting Indonesia you are traveling onwards in Asia then check Traveltomtom’s list of the best sim cards for traveling internationally in 2024 or the best Asia tourist sim cards in 2024 .

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

Click here to order an international prepaid sim card for Indonesia directly online .

As explained throughout the article there are two different e-sim cards:

  • E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards that you buy in Indonesia in a mobile internet provider store

However, as of June 2024 e-sim cards are very limited available for prepaid tourist sim cards in Indonesia.

Traveltomtom personally shopped around in Jakarta and Bali to find out if e-sim cards were available for tourists in Indonesia and the answer is: only with Smartfren, the smallest internet provider in Indonesia.

On arrival at the international airports in Indonesia they only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists. Read all about it in my detailed guide about buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport . If you are buying a sim card at Bali Airport you can actually buy an e-sim card from Smartfren.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Indonesia, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Indonesia. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Indonesia. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare Indonesia e-sim card prices with local prepaid sim cards for Indonesia, it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much more affordable and you get many more Gigabytes. But local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Indonesia in a sim card shop.

That said, e-sim cards that you buy on the internet are in fact cheaper as they start from already $4 USD and local prepaid Indonesia tourists sim cards start from 250,000 IDR which is around $16 USD.

Indonesia has so called tourist sim cards specially designed for non-resident foreigners. And prices to register a new prepaid sim card start from $16 USD. After that the top-ups are really cheap and for $6 USD you can get 50 GB data.

For more info check out my articles about the best prepaid sim cards for Bali , buying a sim card at Jakarta Airport or the best prepaid sim cards for Indonesia .

After a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With e-sim cards you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands. For this convenience Traveltomtom definitely recommends to order one of the listed best e-sim cards for Indonesia in the comparison above.

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Indonesia. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid Indonesia sim card.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Indonesia were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison, tips and tricks it was easier to make a decision and order your e-sim card for Indonesia right away.

If you still have any questions about e-sim cards then please leave me a comment below and I am more than happy to help you out.
