STORM UPDATES: Wyoming County under travel advisory after winter wallop

NYS THRUWAY AUTHORITY 11/19 (7:51 p.m.): The commercial vehicle ban that was in place has been lifted. Please continue to use caution as more snow is expected Saturday night.

WYOMING COUNTY TRAVEL ADVISORY (12 PM): People are asked to stay off the roads due to poor visibility in Wyoming County.

The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office issued a travel advisory around 10:30 a.m. Friday. Blowing and drifting snow are causing poor visibility. The weather also forced Wyoming County courts to close, with the exception of criminal arraignments or emergency criminal matters.

Genesee and Wyoming counties could see an additional foot of snow. Stay up to date with the latest weather developments from News10NBC right  here .

THUNDERSNOW IN BUFFALO (12 PM):

A rooftop cityscape captured the moment when thundersnow roared over the city. People in Buffalo heard those deafening rumbles of thunder and saw lightning strikes as the lake effect snowstorm moved across the area.

 alt=

Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to declare a state of emergency Thursday morning ahead of the winter storm impacting western New York.

Meteorologists say thundersnow is created much the same as in a thunderstorm, except the lake effect snow clouds are lower to the ground and the lighting is more dramatic in the sky.

[anvplayer video=”5148568″ station=”998131″]

LATEST FULL FORECAST (12 PM): Not a lot of winter weather is happening in Rochester, but areas south and west are dealing with a good amount of lake-effect snow.

[anvplayer video=”5148573″ station=”998131″]

There will be generally light to moderate bursts through the morning along the Thruway down into Livingston and Ontario counties. Light accumulations are expected in the 1-3 inches range.

The amounts will increase dramatically across Southern Genesee County into northern Wyoming County and further west towards the Buffalo Southtowns.

This band of snow will not move a lot through Friday but may drift a bit north in the afternoon. That is when we might get a spray of snow in Rochester with minor amounts generally under an inch.

The snow band will move overnight to the north and then to our west on Saturday morning with not a lot happening on Saturday locally, as heavier snow will be out towards Niagara Falls.

On Sunday, the snow bands will swing back through the region with some squalls possible off of Ontario Sunday afternoon in Rochester and along the 104.

Stay tuned to News10NBC for the latest on the heavy lake snows as they move across the region over the next couple of days.

LIVE FROM ATTICA (6 AM): The snow is coming down in Attica, Wyoming County, southwest of Rochester. That’s where First Alert Meteorologist Alex Bielfeld delivered his live report. He reminds people to be careful if they need to travel.

[anvplayer video=”5148526″ station=”998131″]

PRICE GOUGING WARNING (5:30 AM): State Attorney General Letitia James is warning western New York businesses against price gouging amid the snowstorm and state of emergency.

James is asking anyone who believes they are a victim of price gouging to contact her office. You can call 212-416-8090 or file a complaint here.

She’s also reminding businesses that New York State prohibits them from taking unfair advantage of people with excessive pricing of essential goods during times of emergencies including food, water, and gas.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS (5 AM): Some schools in our viewing area have posted closings, including Attica Central, Batavia City, and LeRoy Central. You can get updates on school closings here.

THRUWAY UPDATE (5 AM): The impending snowstorm on Friday has closed parts of the New York State Thruway, including I-90, to commercial traffic.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced a state of emergency for 11 counties, including Monroe, closing the thruway to all commercial traffic from Exit 46 in Henrietta to the Pennsylvania State Line. Erie County also issued a driving ban.

Officials will re-evaluate the Thruway closure later this morning based on weather conditions. In the meantime, the governor has asked people to stay home and stay off the roads wherever possible.

“That level of snow coming down with that intensity is what creates the dangerousness, the lack of ability to see on the roads which is why we’re saying motorists please stay off the roads,” Hochul said. “work remotely if you can. Schools are being shut down in anticipation so we can continue the work of clearing the roads as soon as possible.” The state has more than 350 plow trucks, hundreds of emergency and rescue workers and 42-thousand tons of salt working to clear the roads.

The lake band will drop south and become much more unorganized on Sunday with another wind shift. This will spread the snow out much more but lessen the intensity of the snow. This also means we may see some passing snow showers and bursts of snow for the Bills game, but the heaviest snow will be done by then. Outside of any snow showers, Sunday will be a cold and windy day!

Looking ahead to next week – we’ll see quiet weather leading up to Thanksgiving, which is great for travel! Thanksgiving Day itself is trending drier, but a little cooler. Post-Thanksgiving travel may be an issue next weekend, as we may be eyeing a potential system. A lot of details still have to be ironed out, so we’ll keep you posted if anything develops.

[anvplayer video=”5148515″ station=”998131″]

BUFFALO STORM REACTION: (4 AM): A state of emergency is underway right now for most of western New York. Forecasters say a snowstorm could bring as much as four feet of snow to the city of Buffalo.

Erie County has issued a driving ban and only people authorized for emergency travel are permitted to drive. some residents say the storm is worse than they first thought.

“I wasn’t expecting this, this is big. I wasn’t expecting this. I heard there was a storm, but I didn’t think nothing of it,” said Buffalo resident Brendan Robinson.

The National Weather Service says the heaviest snow for the buffalo area is expected to fall at a rate of more than three inches an hour.

[anvplayer video=”5148528″ station=”998131″]

BUFFALO FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS: (4 AM): Flights coming in and out of Buffalo had to be canceled starting Thursday night because of the storm. Flights across the board in Buffalo are still canceled on Friday morning.

This applies to American Airlines, Jetblue, United, Delta, Southwest, and Frontier. These cancellations began just after 7 p.m. and are expected to last until at least 7:25 a.m. More cancellations are expected throughout the day.

STATE OF EMERGENCY (11 PM Thursday): Erie County officials gave an update on the conditions of the storm. Several cities in the county, including Hamburg and Amherst, are under a state of emergency.

A driving ban is also in place in Erie County. Officials say they are prepared and in constant contact with utilities.

“We’ll anticipate having full crews, rotating everyone out about every 12 hours and we’ll be on staff until the duration of this event and probably up until Monday,” said William Geary Jr., commissioner of the Erie County Department of Public Works.

“We’ve got our fire safety office that’s here, we’ve got a safety preparedness office, we’ve got state representatives from the Office of Emergency Management here,” said Daniel J. Neaverth of the Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services. “We also have ems from not only the county but also from the state on hand so that allows us to keep monitoring things.”

The state has deployed a total of 112 staff from other regions of New York to support lake effect snow removal in critical areas. You’re asked to stay clear of snow plow and salt trucks, giving operators the space to do their jobs.

BILLS GAME RELOCATED: (4 PM Thursday): The NFL is relocating the Bills home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit on Sunday because of a lake-effect snowstorm set to hit the Buffalo region.

The move to relocate the game comes before the storm even began. The forecast is for between one to three feet of snow on the region through the weekend. The switch in sites means the Bills will play back-to-back games in Detroit. They’re scheduled to play the Lions on Thanksgiving. You can read more here.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (12 PM Thursday) — Western New York is preparing for a massive snowstorm that could dump as much as four feet in some areas, most of which are west of Rochester.

Gov. Kathy Hochul held a news conference in Buffalo to warn drivers to avoid any unnecessary travel between Thursday night and Sunday. She says ATVs and snowmobiles are being brought in to help in any rescue efforts.

“That level of snow coming down with that intensity is what creates the dangerousness,” Gov. Hochul said. “The lack of ability to see on the roads which is why we’re saying motorists please stay off the roads. Work remotely if you can. Schools are being shut down in anticipation so we can continue the work of clearing the roads as soon as possible.”

Hochul declared a state of emergency starting Thursday in parts of western New York, including Buffalo, because of the potentially dangerous lake-effect snow.

The travel ban in North Tonawanda was lifted at 8 p.m. Wednesday and the ban in the City of Tonawanda was lifted around 9:15 p.m.

Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Brian Nowak said that he hopes that Cheektowaga and Lancaster will be able to lift bans at 6 a.m. Thursday, weather permitting.

“There is somewhere between 100 to 200 private contractor pieces of equipment here in the district and they really have been doing a good job,” Buffalo Common Council president Chris Scanlon said. “Just a matter of being patient and we’ll have everyone dug out as soon as we possibly can.”

A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming counties until 7 p.m. Thursday. A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Niagara County. Snowfall rates are predicted to fall at up to 3 inches in some parts of WNY.

NY weather: Pea-sized hail expected with thunderstorms in Wyoming and Livingston counties Monday

  • Published: Jun. 17, 2024, 3:29 p.m.
  • Advance Local Weather Alerts

A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Monday at 3:18 p.m. for strong thunderstorms until 3:45 p.m. for Wyoming and Livingston counties.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) are expected.

"At 3:18 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm near Perry, or 9 miles north of Letchworth State Park, moving east at 25 mph," says the weather service. "Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible."

Locations impacted by the alert include Geneseo, Letchworth State Park, Perry, Avon, Mount Morris, Conesus, York, Livonia, Covington, Leicester, Wyoming, Lakeville, Perry Center, Silver Lake and South Lima. This includes Interstate 390 between exits 7 and 10.

The weather service adds, "If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways."

Preparing for approaching lightning: Expert safety advice

Each year, lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times, with the majority of these electrifying events occurring during the summer months. Unfortunately, lightning is responsible for claiming the lives of approximately 20 people annually, as reported by the weather service. The threat of lightning becomes more pronounced as thunderstorms draw nearer, peaking when the storm is directly overhead and gradually waning as it moves away.

To ensure your safety during a thunderstorm, consider the following recommendations:

1. Lightning safety plan:

  • When venturing outdoors, it's crucial to have a lightning safety plan in place.
  • Monitor the sky for threatening signs and listen for the sound of thunder. If thunder is audible, it's an indication that lightning is nearby.
  • Seek a safe place to shelter, preferably indoors.

2. Indoors safety measures:

  • Once you're indoors, avoid using corded phones, electrical devices, plumbing fixtures, and stay away from windows and doors.
  • These precautions help reduce the risk of electrical surges, as lightning can follow conductive pathways.

3. Wait for the all-clear:

  • After the last lightning strike or thunderclap, wait at least 30 minutes before resuming outdoor activities.
  • It's important to remember that lightning can strike even when a storm seems to have passed, so exercise caution.

When indoor shelter isn't available:

If you find yourself outdoors with no access to indoor shelter during a thunderstorm, take these steps to maximize your safety:

  • Avoid open fields, hilltops, or ridge crests, which expose you to greater lightning risk.
  • Steer clear of tall, isolated trees and other prominent objects. In forested areas, stay close to lower stands of trees.
  • If you're with a group, ensure individuals are spread out to prevent lightning current from transferring between people.
  • Camping in an open setting during a thunderstorm is strongly discouraged. If no alternative exists, set up camp in a valley, ravine, or other low-lying areas. Remember that a tent offers no protection against lightning.
  • Do not approach water bodies, wet objects, or metal items. Although water and metal do not attract lightning, they conduct electricity effectively and can pose significant risks.

In summary, when facing the threat of lightning, preparedness and vigilance are your best allies. By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of lightning-related incidents and prioritize your safety.

Rainy roadways ahead: Essential safety tips for heavy rain

When heavy rain strikes, safety is paramount. Equip yourself with these guidelines from the weather service to navigate wet roads and avoid hazards:

Beware of swollen waterways:

  • In heavy rain, refrain from parking or walking near culverts or drainage ditches, where swift-moving water can pose a grave danger.

Maintain safe driving distances:

  • Adhere to the two-second rule for maintaining a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front of you. In heavy rain, allow an additional two seconds of distance to compensate for reduced traction and braking effectiveness.

Slow down and stay cautious:

  • On wet roads, slowing down is paramount. Gradually ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt braking to prevent skidding.

Choose your lane wisely:

  • Stay toward the middle lanes - water tends to pool in the outside lanes.

Visibility matters:

  • Enhance your visibility in heavy rain by turning on your headlights. Watch out for vehicles in blind spots, as rain-smeared windows can obscure them.

Watch out for slippery roads:

  • The first half-hour of rain is when roads are slickest due to a mix of rain, grime, and oil. Exercise heightened caution during this period.

Keep a safe distance from large vehicles:

  • Don't follow large trucks or buses too closely. The spray created by their large tires reduces your vision. Take care when passing them as well; if you must pass, do so quickly and safely.

Mind your windshield wipers:

  • Heavy rain can overload the wiper blades. When visibility is so limited that the edges of the road or other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe distance, it is time to pull over and wait for the rain to ease up. It is best to stop at rest areas or other protected areas.
  • If the roadside is your only option, pull off as far as possible, preferably past the end of a guard rail, and wait until the storm passes. Keep your headlights on and turn on emergency flashers to alert other drivers of your position.

By following these safety measures, you can significantly reduce risks and ensure your well-being when heavy rain pours down. Stay informed about weather conditions and heed advice from local authorities to make your journey safe and sound.

Western New York to receive millions in funding to combat youth vaping

Western New York will receive more than $8.8 million in funding to help combat youth vaping, New York state Attorney General Letitia James announced Friday.

The funds, obtained from the $462 million multistate settlement from JUUL Labs Inc. (JUUL), will be split between the Buffalo City School District, and counties and BOCES in Western New York.

The settlement funds will be used for evidence-based measures to combat underage vaping and e-cigarette addiction.

“JUUL knowingly ignited a nationwide public health crisis, luring young people in with flashy colors and flavors,” James said in a statement. “E-cigarettes are deeply addictive and have severe health impacts on our youth. My office’s historic settlement holds JUUL accountable for the harm they’ve caused our kids and the $8.8 million that Western New York leaders will receive will help fight the youth vaping epidemic. I thank the local leaders who will use these funds for education, prevention, enforcement, and research to ensure our kids are safe and healthy.”

Allegany County will receive $322,931.56, Cattaraugus County will receive $467,578.61, Chautauqua County will receive $804,688.01, Erie County will receive $3,311,394.60 and Niagara County will receive $1,062,901.15, while the Buffalo City School District will receive $504,879.27, Cattaraugus-Allegany-Erie-Wyoming BOCES will receive $269,781.45, Erie 1 BOCES will receive $1,068,780.83, Erie 2-Cattaraugus-Chautauqua BOCES will receive $563,121.77 and Orleans-Niagara BOCES will receive $507,353.46.

“The dramatic increased use of e-cigarettes amongst teenagers is alarming because it has been well-documented how addictive they are, especially when used by children,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said in a statement. “This funding will help support education efforts on the dangers of these addictive products. Make no mistake about it, they are a threat to public health. Youth vaping is an epidemic and a growing concern throughout our state, including here in Erie County. I thank Attorney General James for her work in securing this funding, which will be used locally to further protect our youth from these health-harming products.”
