The Valley of Flowers trek is one of India’s most popular treks in the Himalayas. People who haven’t even stepped into the Himalayas, have heard about the Valley of Flowers trek.

But there is a solid reason behind Valley Of Flower’s legendary popularity – it is one of India’s oldest known treks.

Flowers at a Glance

kesari tours valley of flowers

The Valley of Flowers trek is well-known in the world for its flowers. Sandhya UC, Co-founder and CTO, Indiahikes also loves the trek for its flowers. She says, "A narrow path in between the flowers beckons you to go deeper. You now start seeing a variety of flowers. Not only in colours but in shapes, sizes, textures and smells. A few tens of steps bring you to a new variety of flowers. You wonder who got them here. What made the variety change? It was also interesting to see  the big   fauna change along with the changing flora .

I stood by the flowers, sat down beside them, and lay down on the small exposed trail trying to immerse myself and feel a part of the multitude of flowers in the valley. The cool mountain breeze coming from the glacial end of the valley brought with it scents that I had never known before."

This video takes you through some of the flowers from the valley.

Valley Of Flowers was my first Himalayan trek. Not did I love the trek but I also fell in love with trekking in the Himalayas because of it. After Valley Of Flowers, I went on to do a lot more Himalayan treks, but the Valley of Flowers stays very close to my heart! A lot of people tend to discredit the trek thinking there is not much to it. That would be a mistake. A lot is going on the trek.

What I Like and Don’t Like About Valley of Flowers Trek

What I Like About Valley of Flowers Trek

1 . The Valley of Flowers

The biggest reason for me to love and remember the trek is the beautiful valley itself. When you stand at the entry of the valley you see ahead of you a colourful carpet laid out.  The valley is at least a couple of kilometres wide and more than 10 kilometres long. In front of me was the carpet with waves of pinks, blues and yellow flowing along with the breadth and width.

A narrow path in between the flowers beckons you to go deeper. You now start seeing a variety of flowers. Not only in colours but in shapes, sizes, textures and smells. A few tens of steps bring you to a new variety of flowers. You wonder who got them here. What made the variety change? 2 . The climb and Hemkund Sahib

Valley Of Flowers is a moderate trek but the climb to Hemkund challenges you to the next level.  In 6 km you gain almost 4,000 ft . This not only introduces a new challenge but also takes you to a scenic zone that you did not expect.

I loved the entry into the alpine zone while climbing up to Hemkund. You almost get a drone or helicopter view of Ghangaria and the Valley of flowers while on the way up. You can see where you came from and where you went the previous day. A  bird’s-eye view  puts so much perspective even on landscape scenery.

As you climb up steeply you go through varied experiences. Leaving the tree line, entering alpine meadows, feeling the thin air and looking up to the pure alpine cliffs.

Once at Hemkund Sahib, the quietness of the lake and the surrounding mountains stun you. The majestic lake reflecting its surroundings – the mountains and the Gurudwara makes you reflect in gratitude about your entire journey. For many, it is a moment of quiet reflection on their entire lives.

3 . The cultural experience

Valley Of Flowers is not just a trek. Along with a trek to the beautiful valley, it shows you an  incredible journey of faith  undertaken by humans. You see youngsters, middle-aged, elderly, children, and toddlers on this incredible climb to the lake at 14,000 ft. Many take the support of ponies or even porters but quite a few of them climb on their might.

It was heartwarming to see volunteers sweeping every section of the trail to keep it clean and working at Hemkund Sahib Gurdwara in freezing temperatures. It was a wonderful feeling to wake up in Ghangaria at dawn to the parade calls of the Sikh Gurudwara. The trek shows you a world you would hardly see otherwise.

What I Don't Like About Valley of FLowers Trek

1 . The fact that I cannot camp

Camping is an intrinsic part of a great trekking experience for me. Unfortunately, the Vally Of Flowers trek does not offer that experience. Ghangaria being on the pilgrim trail to Hemkund needs to house hundreds of people and thereby modern infrastructure of lodging is indispensable.  Camping is not allowed by the authorities.

The Valley of Flowers is a very  ecologically sensitive  area. Nobody is allowed to stay in the valley at night. No animals are allowed to enter the valley either. Given these restrictions, it is  not practical to camp  anywhere on the trek.

2 . The innumerable shops selling packaged goods

All along the trail to Hemkund Sahib we see innumerable  dhabas  and shops selling food and packaged goods. While we may say that the huge footfall necessitates the supply, I wish the shops were more regulated. I also wish there was better regulation on what could be sold in an eco-sensitive zone like this.

Packaged goods freely available everywhere only means  prolific litter everywhere . Perhaps time to question how we solve our needs for food and drink on a high traffic trail like this. Would you have any suggestions?

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

kesari tours valley of flowers

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

kesari tours valley of flowers

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

kesari tours valley of flowers

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

kesari tours valley of flowers

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

kesari tours valley of flowers

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

One of the best things that the British gave us is this chanced discovery on a lost path called the Valley of Flowers. This was discovered by the British traveller Frank Smith in the early 1930s. I read his book titled Valley of Flowers. It quite created something inside me. I being a nature lover, this made me feel so nice, and I ended up taking this trek. The Valley Of Flowers Trekking is one of the most sought after and the best treks to take ever.

The trip starts from Haridwar and we depart to Govindghat via Joshimath and the Devaprayag. we were 4 friends together who were very excited about this trip. and it all started with a beautiful 250 kms drive. From there we rested over at the Govindghat for the night. The next day, we trekked for 14 kilometers. It was awesome. We reached Ghangaria and had a relaxed evening. The next day was tedious we trekked to Valley of Flowers and got back. While this day was awesome and amazing, it was definitely very tedious for us. That night we had a nice camp stay. It was good. The 4th day started with a trek from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib trekking. This was a holy spot of the Sikhs. The visit to the seven snow-capped mountains was the highlight. It was the best ever day of the trek. Fifth day was trek back to Govindghat and drive to Joshimath from there. The next day we went back to Haridwar where our trek travel ended. it was avery memorable trip for all of us. we would definately recommened this place

With some amazing species all around, this trek is so worthy. There are a millions of species of wild flowers. Some of the worthy flowers were saxifrags, lilies, sediams, poppy, daisies, calendular, geranium, zinnia and petunia. The trip leader was very friendly and nice enough to explain all these to us. This valley also holds many gurgling streams that adds on to the exciting natural beauty. Another noteworthy thing about this is the rich bio diversity of this place. This place also serves as a home for several species of butterflies and insects too. It was all amazing sight to see. I had a great time.

1461678746_valley_of_flowers-uttarakhand_001.jpg

The trekking was an amazing experience. The trek was very well organized and nicely executed. I liked it totally. The visit to Auli in between our tour was a value added plus. This trek is one of its kinds.

Valley of Flowers is in full bloom from mid August to Early September. So when I arrived Ghangharia on 18th August I was told that the valley needs at leaset two visits interspread with a visit to Hemkund. I have been there at a very early age and the vibrant colours still ring a bell in my mind. The old route was washed away by flash floods of 2013 so the army has bought up another route ( quiet steep at times ) and mended the bridges over Pushpavati River. The walk from Ghangharia to the gate of the valley is itself mesmerising. There are hundreds of different types of flowers on way which makes ones jaw drop. Such is the riot of colours in this route that you keep asking yourself what new will confront you in the valley. The walk from the valley gateway to Mary's grave opens up to a huge number of unknown flowers and orchids. My guide Sanjay Sathi religiously noted me the names of each flowers encountered. The towering Rathovan over the valley is also a treat to watch.

The UNESCORTED heritage site, indeed!! It was beautifulall 6 days and the trip was very well planned

It was a graceful and a nice trip. I had a great and a nice time. The beauty of the towering Himalayan peaks is gigantic. I had a really great time. It was so beautiful as if the mountain is protecting the tranquil environment. the trek was also really good and challenging at the same time. one of the most beautiful place in the world

The trekking to valley of flowers is an amazing experience. You will love it no matter what. It was quite amazing and enticing too. It was like walking in dreams. I had a great time with the trip. I wish to do more such treks soon in my life. My friends also enjoyed it, but our unianimous opinion was that there was a lot of drive and very less trek.

The trekking was great. The inclusions in the rate were accommodation, food, trek equipment, and the services of a trek leader and safety staffs. This was pretty much a deal. We had a great time. S the meeting point was Haridwar station, we did not have to roam around a lot too. It was quite a nice experience to say the least. I wish to take more such treks in the future. The trekking trails were such a beauty to our eyes. I am so in love with this trek. Strongly recommending. The stay was also well arranged.

The trek was awesome. My favourite was day 3. This is the day and the very reason that I loved this trek. The entire high altitude Valley Of Flowers was trekked. Starting day to beautiful nature, and then having the day filled with a wholesome breakfast was a bright start. This place is a sight that is a feast to the eyes and treat for one’s soul. what an experience. even camping at beautiful location was also a really great part. loved it completely.

Valley of Flowers Uttarakhand - A Complete Travel Guide

Valley of Flowers Uttarakhand - A Complete Travel Guide

The Valley of Flowers, also known as Phoolon Ki Ghati in Uttarakhand, is one of the most exquisite and mesmerizing spots snuggled calmly in the West Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Covering an expansive area of 87 square kilometres in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, the Valley of Flowers is set against the stunning backdrop of the magnificent Himalayan ranges. Discovered by the great mountaineer Frank S Smith in 1931 while returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet, this spot is nothing less than paradise on earth. This nature’s bouquet offers you lush meadows budded with endemic alpine flowers. So, be sure that you include the Valley of Flowers in your Uttarakhand tour package.

Apart from the valley, the dense lush forests along with the Pushpawati river, snow-clad mountains, high cliffs, pristine glaciers, and cascading waterfalls offer a stunning view. So, if you are someone who likes photography, bird watching, trekking, and village walks, this place will lure you. Other than its rich and diverse flora, the valley is also home to some endangered species like Asiatic black bear, musk deer, snow leopard, red fox, brown bear, and blue sheep. No wonder this chocolate box spot is an Indian National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site which makes it one of the most sought-after places to visit in Uttarakhand .

1. Things to Do

1.1 trekking.

Set amidst the transitional zone of the splendid Zanskar ranges and the eastern and western Himalayas, it is a great spot for trekking and mountaineering. The 17-kilometre trek commences from a hamlet, Govindghat. The trail is enclosed by fascinating views of the gushing waterfalls, dense forest, and the lofty peaks of the Himalayas. 14 kilometres from Govindghat, you will find yourself in Ghangaria. It is a small hamlet and also the last human habitation centre on your way to the Valley of Flowers National Park in Uttarakhand.

1.2 Pilgrimage

Coiffed at an altitude of 4,329 meters, Sri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara literally translates to ‘lake of snow’. Pilgrims also hire porters, mules, or helicopters to reach the Sikh temple at Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand. It is one of the most sacred temples in the Himalayas and revered greatly by the Sikh community. The crystal-clear Hemkund Lake is surrounded by seven ice cap peaks and offers a spectacular reflection of the magnificent mountain ranges and the captivating glaciers, thus making the trek to the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand a lot more gratifying. It is a calm, tranquil and picturesque spot that attracts various pilgrims and tourists from all across the globe. No wonder it was once visited by Indian yogis and also the tenth Guru – Guru Gobind Sahib for meditation. Other than this, this place also holds special significance for Hindu followers. It is believed the Valley of Flowers is where Hanuman brought the magical herb to resuscitate Lakshman as described in the epic Ramayana. Many people continue to believe that ‘Sanjeevani’, the magical herb still grows in the Valley of Flowers.

1.3 Village Strolls

Ghangaria is the last human habitation centre in your trek before you reach the Valley of Flowers. It is also the confluence of Hemganga and Pushpawati River, earlier known as Lakshman Ganga. While it is covered in snow most of the year, it is advised that you plan your trip between the months of May and September. However, your strenuous trekking will be worth it when you have a look at this quaint and tranquil village. It is a great place for hiking, village walks, or to witness nature and its wilderness in its true sense.

1.4 Witness Exotic Flowers

The Valley of Flowers is a hidden jewel of Uttarakhand and its mere sight is bound to make you fall in love with nature and its beauty. With more than 650 species of flowers like orchids, saxifrages, blue poppy, sediams, lilies, calendula, Geranium, marigold, Himalayan rose daisies, river anemone, primulas, zinnia, and petunia, you will find yourself in a natural baroque of flowers. Maybe this is the reason that the site has earned the title of ‘Centre of Plant Diversity’. Apart from this, you will also stumble upon a variety of vivid butterflies fluttering around the colourful flowers.

1.5 Bird Watching

For those interested in bird watching, the Valley of Flowers will be a delight! Home to exotic birds and Indian Himalayan birds, this place is bound to introduce you to a bunch of new birdies like the Himalayan golden eagle, Himalayan snowcock, snow partridge, snow pigeon, Himalayan monal, and sparrow.

2. Best Time to Visit

The valley is accessible only between the months of June and October and the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand is between July and mid-August when it is in full bloom. Here is what you can expect during these months:

While the snow begins to melt and the seeds of the previous year’s plants start to germinate, you can witness tiny buds and sprouts that will soon turn into colourful and vibrant flowers. You can also catch a glimpse of some beautiful flowers like Reinwardtia Indica, Oxalis Corniculata, Viola Pilosa, Fragaria Nubicola, Thymus Linearis, Wild rose, Berberis Aristata, Gagea Lutea, and Marsh Marigold in the Valley of Flowers in June.

During this time, you can witness one of the most magical sights in Uttarakhand. You will be able to walk through a blanket of umpteen varieties of flowers, including huge collections of Epilobium. So, July would be the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand.

The Valley of Flowers blooms brilliantly until mid-August and you can come across various flowers and butterflies during this time as well, not to forget the spectacular landscape and the breath-taking views it has to offer. However, if you are planning on a trek, the best time would be from July to September. This is the time when the first monsoon rains have ended. As a result, you do not have to worry about the weather while planning your adventure activities. That being said, one should avoid visiting the Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand during the winter season since all the lush and verdant meadows are completely covered in snow which will defeat the purpose of your visit.

The Valley of Flowers is more than a delight to your eyes, a world heritage site, and also the conversion point of Himalayan ranges of Western and Eastern Himalayas. It is truly a fragment of paradise right on earth that we get to witness. With the sparkling white glaciers, the snow-laden peaks, the cascading falls, and the tranquil lakes, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that Full Ki Ghati in Uttarakhand is the very essence of heaven!

It’s an easy to moderate trek that offers rare access to the Uttarakhand Himalayas which has an expanse of the valley covered with flowers. It is also considered an ideal trek for first-timers even including family and kids. One also gets a chance to visit the highest pilgrimage location of Hemkund Sahib.

  • The valley itself is about 2km wide and 8 km long and the best time to visit is between July to mid of September. The temperature on this trek usually stays somewhere between 5 to 20 degrees celsius. And you can expect moderate rainfall even while trekking and the valley usually has a thick cloud cover. The most difficult part of the trek is the climb to Hemkund Sahib on the last day where we cover an altitude of about 4,300 ft in a day and that can be a bit strenuous.
  • The valley was first discovered accidentally by a group of mountaineers in 1931 who were returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet. Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, and RL Holdsworth were a part of this team. In 1980, Valley of Flowers was declared a national park and in 2000, Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve added it as the second core zone. It now comes under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program. There are about 500 varieties of flowers that are found here and some of them even have medicinal properties. Since a number of plant species are considered threatened, any kind of animal grazing is not allowed in this region. When on the trek, you’ll even get to visit the memorial grave of Joan Margaret.
  • The visit to Hemkund Sahib i.e. the highest religious place covered in the itinerary is difficult but rewarding and if you happen to have an extra day, you can even visit Badrinath or explore Rishikesh on your last day.
  • There are well-marked trails and a series of steps laid out at some of the sections of the trek. Mules are available from Govindghat to Ghangaria and Hemkund Sahib but are not allowed to go inside the main valley. You must not expect a luxurious stay while on the trek, there is no camping on this trek and basic lodges are provided where you can expect a bit of seepage smell. There are very high chances of rainfall during the trek days. Also, keep a buffer day in your itinerary as there can be roadblocks due to the rain.
  • It's a must to carry a good quality rain jacket or a poncho at all times when on the trails. Weather-resistant backpack covers should be used to keep the insides of the bag dry. Waterproof trekking shoes are recommended and you should always carry several pairs of socks when on monsoon treks.

Valley of Flowers Trek: Best Time To Visit, Suggested Itinerary & More

“Unfortunately, you are not doing the Valley of Flowers trek at the right time of the season. The best time to visit Valley of Flowers is between 15th July to 15th August,” provided the tour guide Shobhit, making me feel sorry for myself before the trip even begun.

On September 5 th , the flowers had already started shedding, and with them, some of the leaves too. The monsoon was far from over too. In about one month from now, winter would hit the Himalayas turning the Valley of Flowers trek into yet another ordinary hike in the Himalayas.

Disheartened, I realized how I had been planning to visit this place for the previous three years. And when I finally made it there, I made it at the wrong time of the year — the abscission. It was certainly not the best time to visit Valley of Flowers. It reminded me of my failed attempt at the Deo Tibba trek .

valley of flowers trek

It was clear that September was certainly not the best time to visit the Valley of flowers treks. Though it was still looking gorgeous, with frequent waterfalls and water-crossings, the main reason to come here was somewhere lost.

If I had made it in July or August, I would have seen many more colours. The entire experience would have been far more rewarding. The valley would have offered more than a constant green.

Also, before or after your Valley of Flowers trek, I suggest you visit Badrinath temple located only 25 km from Govindghat. Badrinath is one of the four sacred sites of the Hindu people. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit Badrinath on Char Dham Yatra making it a must-not-miss when you are so close. The months of July and August, which make for the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers, are also a great time to visit Badrinath because of the low tourist crowd.

Valley of Flowers National Park

Located in North Chamoli, in Uttarakhand, Valley of Flowers National Park is known for its variety of flora. It is home to rare and endangered species like the Asiatic black bear and snow leopard. With Nanda Devi National Park to its east, the Valley of Flowers trek is located over 3000m above sea level.

It has gained such importance that in 1982 it was declared as a World Heritage Site and a national park. The place was discovered in 1931 by British Mountaineers who lost their way and ended up finding a place full of flowers.

In 1980, it was declared a National Park.

Valley of Flowers Trek

Now that we have discussed a bit about the National Park in Wikipedia-style detail, let’s talk about what is the best time to visit the Valley of flowers treks.

If you are not interested in knowing this bit, scroll down to the next heading that says Itinerary. From there on I discussed the trek.

Best Time To Visit Valley of Flowers

As you might have guessed in the introduction, the best time to visit Valley of Flowers is when the flowers are in full bloom.

Between July and August, the Monsoon hit India. And it is during that time the flowers start blooming. The Valley of Flowers trek is, moreover, only possible to do during the Monsoon months. But there’s a catch.

If you visit at the beginning of the Monsoon, most flowers are still not in their full-bloom stage. Similarly, coming during the end of Monsoon, as I happened to travel, will give you dead flowers.

Typically, 15th July to 15th August makes for the best time to visit the Valley of Flowers. But sometimes, the monsoon hits a little early or late. So make sure you do a little mathematics and come in the middle of the season.

On average, it takes about 2-3 weeks for flowers to come to a full-bloom stage. If you will visit after two weeks since the monsoon first hit the area, you should be able to make it at the best time to visit Valley of Flowers.

If you are looking for other trekking options in the Himalayas between March and June or between September and November, I suggest you go for Sach Pass (that you can also do on a motorcycle if you are not into hiking) or Panchachuli Base Camp Trek, that is located in Uttarakhand only in Dharma Valley .

If you are looking for more suggestions on treks and usual holiday destinations in Uttarakhand, I suggest you read my Uttarakhand travel guide .

3 Day Valley of Flowers Itinerary

Day 1: rishikesh to valley of flowers.

Joshimath is the nearest big town and the base of all transportation. There are frequent buses and shared cabs from Rishikesh to Joshimath. From Joshimath, take a shared taxi to Govindghat. It is also possible to find a direct shared taxi or bus from Rishikesh to Govindghat but availability can be an issue. So break the journey if needed.

The drive from Rishikesh to Govindhat will take an entire day. So spend the night in Govindghat (Also, check this Rishikesh travel guide if you are planning to stay or quickly explore Rishikesh on the way).

Govindghat, moreover, has a security checkpoint that only allows tourists to cross if they check in before 2 pm, making it almost impossible for anyone. So yea, the same day you travel from Rishikesh is not the best time to visit Valley of Flowers.

Since I was riding a motorbike, it took me nearly 10 hours to cover the 270km distance between Rishikesh and Govindghat. I arrived in Govindhat after 4 in the evening and decided to stay in Govindghat Gurudwara. The Gurudwara has a free dormitory or a private room for 1100 Rupees per night. Food, as it is in any Gurudwara around the world, was free.

delhi to govindghat

Day 2: Govindghat to Ghangaria

From Govindghat, the starting point of the Valley of Flowers trek (a town called Pulna) is a short drive away. Cross the bridge Alaknanda River take another shared cab and reach the starting point of the trek. The starting point is around 3 km from Govindghat Gurudwara.

The Govindghat to Ghangaria trek is about 8 km.

I won’t actually call this trek a trek but a hike. Except for the last 4kms of it, the entire stretch is a well-drawn path, dotted with frequent tea shops to rest and eat.

There are pony operators and porters constantly luring trekkers for lifts. One can even pre-book a pony online and have it waiting at the starting point of the Valley of Flowers trek, putting the entire charm of the trek in vain. But for some reason, India has a fashion of hiring ponies for treks. From spiritual treks like Gangotri to Gomukh trek to something more touristy, you can find people riding ponies everywhere.

valley of flowers trek

One thing that’s worth noticing about the Valley of Flowers trek though is the effort it takes. In about 14 km of a trail (8 km for Pulna to Ghangaria and 6 km for Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers National Park), you climb from an altitude of 1800m above sea level to a whopping 3500m above sea level. And that’s what makes it challenging.

But fret not, the entire trail is covered with a conduit of tree canopies and benches to rest. The river Lakshman-Ganga flowing on the right also keeps you entertained.

It’s moreover a pleasure to stop by and gaze at the river Lakshman-Ganga when you get exhausted.

Useful Tips For Govindghat to Ghangaria Trek

  • The trek to Ghangaria can take up to 5 hours because of the steepness so keep the time checked. You don’t want to trek in the Himalayas after dark.
  • Though some people attempt to do the second portion of the trek the same day, I don’t advise it, as the walk is long and it takes a good portion of the day to explore it – I could not see it all even in one day! So start early from Ghangaria to have an entire day exploring the valley.
  • No matter what time of the monsoon you’re doing the trek, carry good rain gear with you.
  • People who do this trek also go to the holy lake ‘Hemkund Sahib’ – an important pilgrimage for Sikhs. So trekkers and religious devotees share the path up to Ghangaria. Ghangaria is the base for both the Valley Of Flowers trek and Hemkund Sahib. I would strongly recommend that if you have gone that far, you do both.
  • Again, the best time to visit Valley of Flowers is between the 15th of July and to 15th of August.

Read more about it here: Hemkund Sahib Trek

Day 3: Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers

The walk from Ghangaria to the end is the most amusing part of the journey with River Chandravati staying on your right for most of the time. Joining you on Day 3 are the many waterfalls too that will come and go. Some of the waterfalls will moreover come your way as river crossings.

kesari tours valley of flowers

Since there is no place to stay inside Valley of Flowers National Park, it’s a day trip from Ghangaria and back. People usually start from Ghangaria early in the morning, spend more time in the valley and come back late evening.

It is advised to carry packed lunch inside the park as there is absolutely no place to get food anywhere. Also, remember to carry a water bottle and keep refilling it on the way.

For most people, the 6km trek can feel quite steep. But don’t be discouraged as it’s very much doable. It took me about 4 hours (with enough photo-breaks on the way) to walk the 6 km trail before I decided to delve deep into the valley towards the Tipra Glacier. Just be patient and keep walking.

I crossed the security checkpoint at 8 in the morning and spent almost 5 hours reaching Tipra Glacier before walking back.

Useful Tips For Ghangaria To Valley of Flowers Trek

kesari tours valley of flowers

  • The entry fee to the national park is 150 Rupees for Indians and 600 Rupees for foreigners per person per day. For the additional day, it’s 50 Rupees for Indians and 250 Rupees for foreigners.
  • DSLR and video cameras for any non-commercial use are free to use.
  • Total time required to do the valley of Flowers treks 4 days (at least). Day1: Rishikesh to Govindghat: Day 3: Govindghat to Ghangaria. Day3: Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers and back to Ghangaria/Govindghat. Day4: Ghangaria/Govindghat to Rishikesh. An additional day (or a bit of extra effort in walking fast and thus saving time) if you’re visiting Hemkund Sahib too.
  • It’s possible to save a lot of travel-budget here by eating most of your meals at the Gurudwaras in Govindhat, Ghangaria, and Hemkund Sahib (if you’re visiting at all) but please don’t abuse the idea and donate some money if you can. It’s ideal to carry some ration and donate it instead of offering money donation(s) as transportation food to Ghangaria and Hemkund Sahib is a challenge.
  • In the end, I once again repeat, the best time to visit Valley of Flowers is between the 15th of July and to 15th of August.

Tour details.

To reach the Garhwal Himalayas, we drive north from Delhi to the town of Rishikesh, famous as the hangout of the Beatles back in the 1960s and these days a laid-back centre for yoga as well as being a major Hindu pilgrimage destination thanks to its location on the sacred river Ganges.

The road north ascends through attractive foothills to reach Joshimath, known as the gateway to the Valley of Flowers. Our trek starts from the nearby trail-head at Govindghat: we’ll hike down to the remote village of Ghangaria, the base camp for all excursions into the valley. The following day we climb up to the fabled Valley itself, to spend a wonderful afternoon amid the wildflower-filled meadows and fabulous mountain views.

The next highlight of our trek is Hemkund lake, at 4,329 metres. It’s a steep 6km ascent, but worth all the effort: the lake is absolutely stunning, its blue-green waters reflecting the seven encircling snow-clad peaks and adjoining glaciers. Hemkund Sahib is a famous pilgrimage site for Sikhs and truly a spectacular natural setting.

After a gentle descent back to Govindghat, we’ll retrace our steps back to Delhi for a final day’s sightseeing.

Valley of Flowers is an easy to moderate trek that offers rare access to the part of Uttarakhand Himalayas which has an expanse of a valley covered with flowers. It is also considered an ideal trek for first-timers, including family and kids. During the Valley of Flowers trek , one also gets a chance to visit the highest Gurudwara in the world – the Hemkund Sahib.

The valley of flowers is about 2 km wide and 8 km long and the best time to visit is between July to mid of September . The temperature on this trek usually stays somewhere between 5 to 20 degrees Celsius and you can expect moderate rainfall even while trekking with a  thick cloud cover hovering over most of the time. The most difficult part of the Valley of Flowers trek is the climb to Hemkund Sahib on the last day, where we climb an altitude of about 4,300 ft in a day and that can be a bit strenuous.

The Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand is extremely rich in biodiversity making it a paradise for naturalists. The Valley Flowers is home to many rare species of flora and fauna that add to the magnificence of the trek. The Valley of Flowers boasts an impressive record of 13 species of mammals, each contributing to the region's rich wildlife. The biodiverse haven of Valley of Flowers features as many as 520 varieties of plants . This trek is a testament to the extraordinary biodiversity that graces the Himalayan region.

Valley of Flowers Trek Informative Video

The Valley of Flowers was first discovered accidentally by a group of mountaineers in 1931 who were returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet. There are about 500 varieties of flowers that are found in Valley of Flowers and some of them even have medicinal properties. Since several plant species are considered threatened, any kind of animal grazing is not allowed in this region. When on the trek, you’ll even get to visit the memorial grave of Joan Margaret.

There are well-marked trails and a series of steps laid out at some of the sections of the Valley of Flowers . Mules are available from Govindghat to Ghangaria and Hemkund Sahib but are not allowed to go inside the main valley of flowers . You must not expect a luxurious stay while on the trek, there is no camping on this trek and basic lodges are provided where you can expect a bit of seepage smell. There are very high chances of rainfall during the trek days. Also, keep a buffer day in your itinerary as roadblocks can occur due to the rain.

Its a must to carry a good-quality rain jacket or a poncho at all times when on the  Valley of Flowers trek. Weather-resistant backpack covers should be used to keep the insides of the bag dry. Waterproof shoes are recommended and you should always carry several pairs of socks when on monsoon treks .

How-Valley-Of-Flower-Looks-On-Day-2

Ghangaria to Valley of Flower and back to Ghangaria

The journey to Valley of Flowers is a distance of 4 km. The valley is 6-7 km long; the distance travelled in the valley depends on how the trekkers want to explore the valley. Another, factor to be considered is the stamina of the trekkers.

Right, when you start from Ghangaria in 30 minutes forest check post arrives. The check post might not be an attraction but right before the check post, there is a gushing waterfall called Laxman Waterfall. Another 20 minutes into the greenery and the next furious attraction comes. At this point, the Pushpavati River flows furiously below a wooden bridge. It is quite a common yet unique and mesmerizing capture. The trail is steep and stone paved like the previous day. You can find many bridges and landslide areas when you enter the valley.

The valley is thousand times more stupendous than you might have imagined. It truly makes the Himalayan peaks lively and cherishing. Blue Poppy, Snake Foil, White Leaf Hog Foot, Himalayan Rose, Meadow Geranium, Dog Flower, and Hooked Stick Seed are the native flowers. These astounding colourful blossoms end after a 5 km stretch at a glacier. If the weather is clear the mighty Himalayan peaks of Nilgiri Parvat, Bhyundar Khal, Rattaban, Gauri Parvat, etc. in the background. Today’s journey will conclude with your coming back to Ghangaria before nightfall.

One of the most revered of all Sikh shrines and the world’s highest Gurudwara, Hemkund Sahib, is situated at an altitude of 4,329 meters. There will be porters and mules if you wish to offload your load. The trail today will be similar to previous days, stone-paved and continuous ascend. There will be shops on the way where you can energize yourself. Watch out for the rare flower Brahmakamal that will be spotted beside pathways.

The Gurudwara is placed magically beside the mirror-like glacial lake Hemkund. During clear skies, one can witness the flawless reflections of the adjoining Saptrishi peaks. The lake is fed by the melting glaciers of Hathi Parvat and Saptrishi peaks. Religious Laxman temple is also found near the lake. In the afternoon trek down to reach Ghangariya for an overnight stay. Once you have reached Rishikesh, TTH will manage the rest of your travel arrangements, if you have opted for TTH's pick-up service, you can select this option during the booking process by adding it as an add-on.

Options to reach Rishikesh

  • Take overnight train/bus to Rishikesh.

Arrive in Rishikesh by 6:00 pm.

The designated drop-off point is Trek The Himalayas Office (Tapovan | Laxmanjhula).

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

How to choose the right trek?

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level:  Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail:  A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek:  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain:  Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather:  Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail:  Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert:  If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

Editor’s note: 201 Beautiful Mountain Quotes to Inspire Your Treks!

What is the best time to visit Valley of Flowers?

The Valley of Flowers best time is during the rainy season because it is a monsoon trek. On a serious note, the Valley of Flowers National Park opens between late June and Mid September every year. The exact dates are announced a few months before. The flower valley remains closed for the rest of the year.

The wild Himalayan flowers start blooming in July and sometimes it might get late and begin in August as well. By the end of August, some flowers begin to shred and continue to decrease by September.

I went during the end of July, and I saw about 75 to 80% of flower blooms.

valley of the flowers

So, what is the best time to visit Valley of Flowers?

The locals suggest that the best time to visit Valley of flowers is between last week of July to mid-August  when the full bloom happens. Again the later, the better, so August would be a good pick to witness the rare flowers of Himalaya!

But there is a catch. It will surely rain since it is the monsoon season, and the downpours are heavy during these weeks usually.

If it’s heavy then it becomes impossible to trek as they might even close the park or you may need a few more days to reach to the base village due to landslides and road blockades which are common at this time.

So if possible, allow yourself up to 7 to 8 days so that you can keep a day or two as a buffer in case rain interrupts.

Valley of Flowers Trek Difficulty

Valley of flowers India

The valley of Flowers altitude is between 3,352 – 3,658 meters or between 11,000 to 12,000 feet, which is in the beginning scale of the high altitude range. This altitude can cause acute mountain sickness to most of us.

If you have prior high-altitude trek experience, then this wouldn’t be a difficult one assuming you have a decent fitness level. However, every person’s body reacts differently to the mountains, so you are the best judge of your body.

You will trek for about 6 to 7 hours each day and the total trek distance is around 40km.

But follow the general trek guidelines for the Valley of Flowers trek as well. If you have never trekked before, it is better that you indulge in some kind of moderate physical activity every day for 2 to 3 hours at least 15 days before the trek. This would be the best case, but not a very hard rule. If you are fit enough, you can easily pull this off.

Valley of Flowers Trek Cost

Valley of flowers trek

If you opt for a Valley of Flowers tour with any travel companies, the trek cost from either Rishikesh or Joshimath and back ranges approximately between 8000 INR to 13000 INR. Most do a trek for 5 to 6 days.

I traveled from Bangalore to Valley of Flowers and also did Hemkunk Sahib trek and including everything, it cost me around 2500 INR. Check my detailed break-up of expenses at the end of this post.

The Valley of Flowers Detailed Itinerary

Now let me share you the itinerary that you can follow your own Valley of Flowers Uttarakhand trek!

Day 1| Rishikesh to Joshimath, Joshimath to Govind Ghat

The actual trip starts from Joshimath (the itinerary that you find in Valley of Flowers tour packages) although it’s still a long day of travel. It takes 8 to 10 hours to reach from Rishikesh to Joshimath depending on the mode of transport.

Rishikesh to Valley of flowers distance is about 275km. The distance from Rishikesh to Joshimath is about 250 km.

And finally, the distance from Joshimath to Valley of Flowers is about 20 km, most of which should be hiked.

Valley of flowers trek guide

Part 1 – How to get from Rishikesh to Joshimath ?

You can get from Rishikesh to Joshimath by bus. The buses begin at 4 AM and there are 2 or 3 direct buses per day. Public buses are limited and the last bus leaves around 5:15 AM. The cost is under 200 INR (sometimes even lesser)

Make sure to reach early, maybe by 4 AM itself. I reached the bus stand at 5:30 AM and missed the last bus. So I had to spend some extra money on the shared jeep.

Shared Taxis from Rishikesh to Joshimath: The TATA sumo or taxis/jeeps are another option to reach Joshimath from Rishikesh. I paid 200 INR post bargaining. The driver initially quoted 600 INR, and that’s what he charged the foreigners. Of course, the locals paid lesser than me.

Where to board the bus/jeep : The bus station at Rishikesh is away from the centre of the town and since it would too early in the morning to reach the bus stand (you can still board from the station, but you’ll end up paying more for the taxi to reach there!), you can wait near Tapovan, just after Lakshman Jhula.

The views are a treat throughout the journey from Rishikesh! There is a small police chowk after Lakshman Jhula. Both the buses and jeeps pick up from there. There is no signboard, but you can check with the locals for the bus stop – everyone knows the place.

Part 2 – Getting from Joshimath to Govind Ghat

Govind Ghat is a small village located ahead of Joshimath, which is also the place to start the trek for those heading to Hemkund Sahib. Once you reach Joshimath, take a shared taxi from Joshimath to Govind Ghat. It should not take you more than 100 INR. It takes about half an hour to 40 minutes to reach Govind Ghat.

Ideally, you should be reaching Govind Ghat latest by say 8 PM. If you take a jeep to Joshimath, they usually drop to Govind Ghat as well, so discuss it along. They might quote an extra sum, but haggle to include it under 200 INR.

Tip: Ensure that you start your day early, preferably by 4 AM to make it to Govind Ghat by evening. The weather is totally unpredictable in the mountains, and roadblocks are common. I started my day at 5:30 AM and made to Govind Ghat at 7 PM with two roadblocks in the villages that took away about 1.5 hours.

Where to Stay: Govind Ghat has many budget and small hotels, and the price varies from 300 INR to 500 INR for a night. There are many places for food, and finding a restaurant isn’t a problem.

I stayed in the Gurudwara at Govind Ghat as I wanted to get a glimpse of the culture, which was a great experience. Plus, I had enforced a strict treks-on-a-tight-budget rule for this trip!

Staying at Joshimath: In case you can’t make it to Govind Ghat, don’t sweat. It is an hour away and it means you have to cover that one hour by starting early the next day.

There are many budget stays and modern hotels in Joshimath , which is a relatively bigger town.

Check out  The Sleeping Beauty Hotel , which is an excellent budget hotel in a great location. Other budget hotels in Joshimath are  Mountain Studio  and  The Snow City .

If you feel like pampering yourself for a day or two before or after this trek, then check out these awesome resorts Tattva Resorts ,  Mountain Rover  and  Shivalik Camps & Resort with splendid views.

But if you want to keep the cost to a minimum, then go to government-run GMNV guest houses that are pretty cheap, with dorm beds at 100 to 150 INR. They are hygienic and well-maintained. There are 2 GMNV houses – one at the centre, and the other in upper Joshimath. You can call them on the same day or a day before and block your stay.

Day 2 | Govind Ghat to Ghangaria

The actual trek starts here. Start your day at 6 AM to Ghangaria village , which is the base camp for the two treks. The total distance from Govind Ghat to Ghangaria is about 12 km. There are shared cabs that go to 4 km.

There is a bridge in Govind Ghat, which also has a check post. Here you are mandatorily required to submit your details to register first. Shared cabs are parked right to next to it. It takes about 20 minutes to cover 4 km.

Bridge in Govind Ghat

The trek to Ghangaria is strenuous, even tougher than the trek to the valley of flowers itself. The trek distance one way is 8 km, but 90% of the distance is uphill, some parts of it being steep as well. You can hire porters to carry your luggage or alternatively, rent a ride on the mule if you find it tough.

Day 3 | Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers

Below is the Valley of Flowers Trek Map. You will find it at the entrance, just as you start the trek. It is better to a picture on your phone for reference, especially helpful if you are doing a solo trek to Valley of flowers.

valley of flowers trek

Ghangaria to Valley of flowers distance is 6km. This Ghangaria to Valley of flowers trek takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on how much you intend to spend in the national park and your trekking pace. Luckily, there are just about 200 meters gain in altitude and the trail is a mix, but most easily. All you nature lovers will totally enjoy the trek.

Once you get out of Ghangaria, there is a signboard for the valley of flowers, following which you’ll reach the checkpoint. You have to make your entry there and get the tickets. The entry ticket for Indians is 150 INR.

Check this picture below for full details.

entry fee details

This is your day to finally make into the flowers of Valley consisting of gorgeous wildflowers including the rare and precious blue poppy , hundreds of kinds of tiny flowering plants all surround ed by surreal landscapes.

valley of the flowers

Tip: Start the trek as early as possible, within 6 AM. The weather usually gets worse as the day progresses and noon is when heavy downpours occur. Also, starting early ensures that you get to spend more time strolling in the valley. It takes some time to soak in the beauty and treat yourself to the views, after all this hiking!

Where to stay after your trek: Come back to Ghangaria to rest your body after an exhausting but truly rewarding day. You deserve a treat because you did it!

Day 4 | Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib

Now, you have two options after your Valley of flowers trek. Or you can skip this. If you don’t want to take this up, skip this part and go to Day 5 below.

Hemkund Sahib, is home to a gorgeous glacial lake, next to a Gurudwara(Sikh temple), which is also a pilgrimage site.

Hemkund Valley of flowers is even unique as you will get to see some exquisite high-altitude Himalayan flowers that’s not found anywhere in the world.

Hemkund Sahib

The trek distance from Ghangaria to Hemkund is 5 km, but the terrain is tougher compared to the valley of flowers. Also, there is an altitude gain of about 1100 to 1200 meters. It’s a difficult trek, but definitely do-able! You should be back to Ghangaria by 5 PM.

Begin the trek before 6 AM. Just make sure to carry the essentials – water bottle, glucose (if needed), light food, poncho, trekking pole and camera gears.

Where to stay: You have to get back to Ghangaria for a nice rest after this fulfilling Hemkund Sahib trek.

Check this post below to find all about Hemkund Sahib.

Day 5 | Ghangaria to Govind Ghat/ Joshimath

The trek back to Govind Ghat from Ghangaria would feel easier, but it still needs 4 to 5 hours to make your way back. It’s better to stay in Joshimath as that’s where you’ll have to head to board bus/jeep to Rishikesh.

Some people start really early and even walk back within 3 hours so that they reach Rishikesh the same day by jeeps.

Where to stay: Joshimath/Govind Ghat

Check out Joshimath hotels and their prices here to book .

Day 6 | Joshimath to Rishikesh

Board an early morning bus or shared jeeps from Joshimath and reach Rishikesh in the evening. Rishikesh is a beautiful town with lots of attraction. So you can spend a few days exploring this charismatic town if you have time. I’d highly recommend this town to all!

Where to stay: Rishikesh

There are plenty of hotels in Rishikesh in all budget ranges, including homestay and guesthouses.

Check out these for budget options: Rajendra Yoga & Wellness Centre , Anjali Home Stay , Ambika Resorts , Shalom Backpackers Rishikesh , Blue Jay Hostel Rishikesh , Nature Care Village- Ayurveda Yoga Retreat

I’d suggest these mid-range hotels and guesthouses: Hotel Tip Top Rishikesh , Raj Cottage Ganga Vatika , Hotel Ganga Forest View , Hotel Indira Nikunj

What to carry for Valley of Flowers Trek? – Packing List

Tips: Carry as minimum luggage as possible – just the essentials should be perfect. It must include a poncho, 3 to 4 layers for cold, a wind jacket, waterproof trekking shoes, water bottles and a trekking pole. Also, don’t forget to carry some basic first aid kit.

I repeat, the trail is tough – carry as less as you can! I had put on some extra clothes and it was very stressful to trek with a heavy bag.

Drink enough water to stay hydrated. There is a change in the altitude as you trek, and you trek from an elevation of 1800 meters to 3100 meters in a few hours.

Take it slow, and you should be ideally reaching Ghangaria between 4 to 5 PM in the evening. Ensure you make it before it gets dark anyway.

Where to stay during your Valley of Flowers trek?

As you saw in the detailed itinerary, Ghangaria is where you will spend more days. From tents to modern hotels, there are many options to stay. You can get a room from 200 INR onwards. There is a Gurudwara in Ghangaria as well, and you can stay there too for free.

Hemkund Sahib or Valley of Flowers – Which one to do first?

Now if you have decided to both Valley of flowers and Hemkund Sahib treks, the order to follow is as you wish. But technically, there are two approaches to this. If you feel that you need to acclimatise and warm up first – then go for the valley of flowers, also because this trek is more beautiful.

On the other hand, if you feel the urge to be done with the toughest first (like me), then Hemkund should be your first choice.

Valley of Flowers Solo Trek – Total Cost

Below are my expenses from Delhi to Valley of Flowers and back.

So you got it! I think that’s a great budget for a week’s trip, what do you say?
