Frequently Asked Questions About Scotland

If you're thinking of visiting Scotland, you might have a few questions. For your convenience we’ve collected the most asked ones so check our FAQs below. You can also find more detailed information in our Scotland Travel Guide and for booking and payment information, see our general FAQ page.

1. Is it safe to visit Scotland?

Yes, Scotland is a safe place to visit. The Scottish people are famously welcoming and hospitable to travellers. Of course, you should take standard travel precautions when in the bigger cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Should you find yourself in an emergency during your stay, you can contact your travel consultant on our 24 hour helpline. If it’s the local emergency services that you need, call 999 from any phone to get in touch with ambulances, fire and rescue, coastguard and the police. For more information about safety in Scotland, check out our travel guide .

2. Do I need a visa to visit Scotland?

Whether or not you need a visa to visit Scotland depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian or European citizen, you do not require a visa. You will only need a valid passport.

If you’re from another country, you may need a visa to visit Scotland, unless you have dual UK citizenship status. These nationalities include:

You can answer a couple of quick questions on the UK government website to check if you need a visa .

3. How many days do you need to visit Scotland?

The amount of time you will need in Scotland depends on the attractions and areas you want to visit.

If you want a comprehensive tour, travelling across the country and including many of the Scottish islands, we’d recommend you take two weeks. This ensures you’re not rushing through destinations. Longer tours like this also showcase the best of the coasts, lochs, national parks, and places like the famed Orkney archipelago.

If you’re looking for a shorter stay, but still want plenty of sightseeing, we also have shorter, action-packed tours. These take one week or less and show you the most popular Scottish sights, such as the stunning Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and more.

4. Can I tour Scotland on my own?

Touring Scotland by yourself is a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and solo travel is an option many of our customers choose. If you’re looking for a flexible road trip where you set the pace and pick out all of the attractions that you want to see, then we’d recommend our top-rated self drive packages .

However, if you want a guide to accompany and teach you about each destination then a private tour would mean the convenience of a personal tour guide at a speed that suits you as well as a local knowledge of hidden gems.

Our solo travellers also come back from our guided small group tours with smiles on their faces and plenty of good memories. With a local guide to lead you and a maximum of 15 fellow explorers, you’ll always have company.

5. What is the best way to travel around Scotland?

This really depends on the type of travel experience you want for your trip. On a guided group tour , you’ll get to experience the sights in the company of like-minded travellers. We have carefully vetted and tested our local suppliers and promise that your tour group will always be small (a maximum of 15) so you receive the best and most personal service.

On the other hand, if you would like to see Scotland privately and at your own speed, then a self drive tour is best. With a rented car you’ll have more opportunities to stop for photos and go to viewpoints that aren’t always noted on the map. You also wouldn’t be bound to time limits and would have the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

A privately guided tour is the best combination of the two and would see you or your chosen travelling party accompanied by an expert local travel guide where you set the pace as you see fit. You get to enjoy the personal one-to-one travel experience of a small group, but also keep the autonomy of self-drive tours.

6. What side of the road do drivers use in Scotland?

Motorists drive on the left side of the road in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Remember to occasionally check your position in traffic, especially in the countryside where roads are often narrow and winding. For travellers used to driving on the right, we advise booking an automatic transmission car, not a manual, for an easier drive.

7. When is the best time to visit Scotland?

Deciding when to visit Scotland depends on the sights you want to see and the seasons you prefer.

If you want a festive experience or want to celebrate the new year (or in Scotland, Hogmanay) then visit in the winter or autumn seasons for crisp chilly days and possible snowfall, perfect for getting a hot chocolate and going exploring.

If you’re keen to have longer days and see lush green landscapes in a milder climate, then a spring or summer visit is for you. Keep in mind, Scottish weather could often be described as “four seasons in a day”. You can’t always depend on a forecast and should bring along waterproofs just in case.

Read our blog article for detailed info on the best time to visit Scotland .

8. What are the must visit places in Scotland?

Scotland has a wealth of history, architecture and natural beauty so there’s always a great day out to be had and a new area to visit – despite this, we have collected the most visited and highly rated destinations by our travel agents and customers.

The must-visit places in Scotland include:

9. Where is the best scenery in Scotland?

We may be biased but we think there is beautiful scenery across Scotland. Even the drive to your next destination will mean you pass by mountains, lochs and rolling hills. However, the most visited sights are found in the Highlands and islands, and along the coasts. Why not check our recommended Scottish attractions to see what Scotland has to offer?

The best scenery in Scotland includes:

10. Can I customise my tour package?

Our local experts have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to you, ensuring every sight or attraction you visit is one that you won’t forget. When creating packages, we plan routes extensively with this in mind so that our guests see the best of Scotland.

Should there be anything in particular you’re keen to see or areas you want to visit, though, get in touch with us. We can also add extra nights to your itinerary, so you can see more of Scotland. Alternatively, you can request a custom tour and your travel consultant will work with you to create your ideal trip across Scotland.

11. When should I organise my flight tickets?

We’d advise that you look over flights for timings and dates, but hold off purchasing until you’ve booked your preferred tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Why? Once you’ve been introduced to your travel consultant, you’ll have all the information you need to make informed choices on timings. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

12. What should I pack to visit Scotland?

In Scotland, it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in one day. So, no matter the season, you should have a range of essential items in your luggage:

An umbrella could be handy, and bird watchers may wish to bring binoculars. You may also need a UK travel adapter, which you can buy at the airport or in Edinburgh shops after you arrive. For more information, read our useful electricity information and packing guide .

Private Tours of Scotland FAQs

What are the rules when tipping in scotland .

Tipping in Scotland is not compulsory. However in Restaurants it is generally polite to leave at least 10% tip. If you feel you have been provided with exemplary service you may wish to leave more. This is entirely up to you, and you are not obliged to do so.

Bartenders serving drinks in bars and pubs in Scotland don’t expect to be tipped by customers. That being said, tips are always appreciated.

Scotland doesn’t have fixed rules for tipping as our county adopts a much more laid back approach when it comes to tipping. With regards to tipping your walking tour guides or driver tour guides, the answer would be simply whatever you are comfortable with. Again, you are not obliged to tip. But if you feel the level of service has been very good then you may tip as you are feel appropriate.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major Credit and Debit Cards (including AMEX, VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, MAESTRO). This can be done over the phone or online. We also accept payment via Wire Transfer or via Paypal .

Are Flights Included?

Booking flights is not part of our service.  However we are happy to advise on the best routes available to you.  Once you have touched down in Scotland every aspect of your tour will have been organised and awaiting your arrival, along with your driver to greet you at the airport.

What is included within the price?

Generally we look to included the following in our initial offerings: Accommodation, Private Driver, Executive Vehicle Hire, All Excursions, Tour Guides and 24 hour Private Concierge Service. This is dependant on each specific tour request.

Are Meals Included?

Our travel itineraries always include lunch and dinner recommendations. With our team on hand to book all restaurants for both lunch and dinner. When booking accommodation we will always include Bed & Breakfast, unless otherwise instructed. Lunch and dinner meals are generally not included within our package costs, unless of course specifically requested. We can accommodate special requests for travellers looking to have set menu and wines selected and pre-paid.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Scotland?

The peak times for visitors in Scotland are between April and September. These are the spring and summer months and the weather tends to be warmer and drier. The winter and autumn months in Scotland also offer their own degree of charm, with festivities aplenty. It is to be noted that Scotland has varying weather patterns. However that is all part of the fun when visiting Scotland and why our lands are so beautiful and green.

What Clothes Should I Bring?

Due to the changeable weather here in Scotland, we recommend you bring a variety of clothing. Scotland is known for quick showers, so it is a good idea to bring a water proof jacket. Equally the weather can be warm in summer (reaching 30 degrees) so make sure you bring shorts and T-shirt too. Luxury hotels and restaurants in Scotland are fairly relaxed in terms of dress code but at a minimum we suggest having at the very least a few smart causal outfits.

A terrific 6 days. The success of any tour can never be just the places you visit. The weather, accommodation assuming multiple days, size and make up of the group, comfort of the bus all play a part. But you need a fantastic, talented, knowledgeable, quick witted and engaging tour guide and we did. ‘Sophie’ was all of these and more. She kept us entertained with lots of information, updates times and places coming up, histories, stories of the myths and mysteries of the highland clans. Sophie had created a playlist to keep us entertained and welcomed additions from us. She is competent driver we never felt unnerved at any time. If you do this tour make sure you ask when she is leading.

Martin (our tour guide) was incredible. I really could list a million things but to name a few: kind soul, great story teller, safe driver, positive attitude, super knowledgeable. The tour was incredible, but made even better with Martin as our tour guide! It will be sad to say goodbye to everyone that I got to know on this tour. It was an amazing time. Highly recommend it!

Kelsey 29/04/2024

Absolutely stellar experience on the 3-day tour from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye! Our guide, Laurie, was an absolute gem, making the weekend an unforgettable adventure filled with laughter and fun. The breathtaking views and perfect weather only added to the magic of the trip. Laurie went above and beyond, not only providing excellent commentary but also assisting with travel arrangements, ensuring a seamless journey throughout. And don’t miss out on asking her about ‘the key game’ for Dunvegan Castle – it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. Five stars all around for an incredible tour!

Gaurav 03/05/2024

T he One O’Clock Gun booms out over the city every day from the iconic Edinburgh Castle, sentinel of the city’s festivals, castles, palaces, and universities.  One of the most beautiful cities in the world, Edinburgh is steeped in history, culture and learning. An Edinburgh tourist guide would surely take visitors to the World Heritage Site of the Old and New Towns.  With 4,500 listed buildings, beautiful parks, gardens and nature trails, the snapshots of time through the ages is almost surreal. Be it the Royal Mile, Grassmarket or even the port area of Leith,  there is plenty to interest any visitor, whether they are interested in geology, nature, history, festivals, nightlife, dining, shopping or culture.  Almost four and a half million tourists a year enjoy this wonderful city. Edinburgh is the world's first UNESCO City of Literature, which isn’t surprising with four universities, one college and excellent schools. During the summer months, this cultural city hosts the biggest annual International Festival and Festival Fringe, Military Tattoo and International Book Festival. If you miss action-packed August, there are other festivals throughout the year.

Where can we take you?

The Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is renowned for its stunning scenery, picturesque fishing villages and breathtaking landscapes. At the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains lie the magical fairy pools, azure blue crystal-clear pools, and waterfalls.

Romantic Loch Lomond

This beautiful loch is the beating heart of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. 720 square miles of stunning scenery from lush rolling countryside and thick forest to vast glens and craggy mountains.

The Jacobite Steam Train

Enjoy one of the world’s greatest train journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. The railway line curves over the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct as seen in Harry Potter.

Outlander Filming Locations

Combine your favourite Outlander filming locations with some beautiful Highland scenery. Take in the historic gems of the Royal Burgh of Culross (Cranesmuir), Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) and the foreboding Blackness Castle.

The Isle of Mull

With its quaint villages, miles of coastline and cliffs, majestic mountains and empty beaches, the Isle of Mull is one of the best locations in Scotland to spot rare white-tailed sea eagles, whales, basking sharks, and dolphins.

The Isle of Iona

The tiny sacred Isle of Iona has been a place of Christian worship and pilgrimage ever since St Columba arrived here from Ireland in 563 AD. Iona is also the final resting place for many kings of Scotland, including Macbeth.

Perched on top of a vast volcanic rock, and visible from miles around, Stirling Castle was the key to the kingdom of Scotland. It has witnessed sieges, wars, and battles and looks over the famous battle site of Stirling Bridge.

Stunning Glencoe

Driving deep into Glencoe, Scotland’s most famous glen, you can’t fail to be moved by its haunting atmosphere and the legend surrounding the massacre of the Clan MacDonald by government forces in 1692.

Beautiful Oban

Originally a fishing village, Oban on the rugged west coast has grown into a vibrant town. Known as ‘seafood capital of Scotland’ you can savour some of Scotland’s tastiest oysters and mussels around the picturesque harbour.

Mysterious Loch Ness

Loch Ness harbours many mysteries and is the most famous stretch of water in the world. From its famous monster ‘Nessie’, the loch forms part of the 60-mile Caledonian Canal which cuts through the Highlands.

Historic Glenfinnan

In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an ill-fated attempt to reinstate the exiled Stuarts to the throne of Great Britain. Harry Potter fans will know the viaduct as the bridge to Hogwarts.

Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is a place where majestic mountains reach up into massive skies. Where sparkling lochs stretch as far as the eye can see, while rugged glens and moorland hide legends of long ago.

Exciting Adventures

Experience Scotland’s breath-taking scenery with the buzz of some high adrenaline thrills. How about a 40-metre-high Highland bungee jump over a dramatic river gorge or a thrilling RIB ride across Loch Ness.

Majestic Castles

There are around 3000 castles in Scotland, many are picturesque ruins, others being medieval towers and craggy fortresses to gilded palaces. Eilean Donan Castle is probably the most photographed castle in Scotland.

Scotch Whisky

Scotland has over 130 distilleries across five whisky-making regions. We’ve been enjoying Scotch for at least 500 years. The oldest distillery, Glenturret was founded in 1775, followed by Bowmore in 1779.

A Discover Scotland Tours Gift Certificate makes a thoughtful present for someone you know who is longing to explore Scotland. They could enjoy a small group tour between 1 & 6 days of the Highlands.

Timberbush Tours are 5 Star Visit Scotland Accredited Scottish tour operator, so you can rest assured that our tours are of the highest quality.

TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence

We have been awarded the TripAdvisor certificate of excellence every year since 2011! This is a fantastic achievement we are very proud of, and we would not have received the award without the highly rated feedback from our customers.

The best Driver-Guides

We are lucky to have some of the best Driver-Guides in the industry working for us, and who have been a part of the Timberbush Tours family for many years!

They can’t wait to share the history, culture and show you ‘their’ Scotland. They’re fantastic storytellers, who will captivate you with stories of victory and defeat, of William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots, of the Highland Way of life, and possibly even a few jokes too!

Modern, air-conditioned coaches

Travel in comfort throughout the highlands and islands on a modern, air-conditioned coach, you will reach your destination relaxed and ready to explore.

We are committed to offering the highest level of comfort and safety for our passengers, and as such we regularly replace and upgrade our coaches to ensure they are as modern, fuel-efficient, and safe as possible.

We proudly boast a fleet of modern, air-conditioned vehicles, ranging in size from 10 to 53 seats to cater for all group sizes.

Environmentally Friendly Tour Operator

We understand the importance of preserving Scotland’s natural beauty for future generations to enjoy and have adapted our business in order to be as environmentally responsible as possible: our modern coaches are fuel efficient; we promote local businesses and Scottish produce; we encourage our customers to donate to our chosen charity, Trees for Life; we set strict recycling policies at our offices; we promote the use of public transport to staff and customers.

All of these measures help to preserve the environment, and when you take a tour with Timberbush Tours, you can be confident you will be reducing your carbon footprint and in turn helping to keep Scotland beautiful.

For more information on our environmental policies, please visit our  Green Tourism page .

No Credit Card or Booking Fees

The price of the Scottish tour that you see is the price for that tour, excluding meals, accommodation and entrance to attractions.

We don’t deal with transactions fees or booking fees and we do our best to negotiate discounts on the many attractions that we visit in order to allow you to have the fullest experience that you can when visiting the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Simple Booking Experience

Booking a Scottish tour with us couldn’t be easier; you can book your tour on our website by selecting our tours, or you can pay us a visit in person and say hello at our office at 555 Castlehill, 2 minutes from the entrance of Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Royal Mile.

If neither of these options are convenient then our friendly Reservations Team are on hand 07:00 - 21:00 daily, all year round to help you book your tour or answer any queries you may have.

Meet our drivers

Our Driver-Guides are the best in the business, and some of them have been with us right from the very beginning of Timberbush over 20 years ago! Read all about them here.

25 years ago husband and wife team, June and Gary Voy, had a vision – to showcase the best of Scotland to guests from around the world, and become the best Scottish Tour Operator Scotland had ever seen. Thus, Timberbush Tours was born!

It all began back on the 6th April 1998, with two lovely passengers who wanted to explore the Highland town of Oban with us. Fast-forward to present day and we now offer a wide range of 1, 2 and 3 day tours of the Scottish Highlands, Islands and North of England departing daily from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness all year round! Our family of staff has grown to over 50, and that one coach has turned into a fleet of our very own contemporary, air-conditioned coaches.

Timberbush Tours vision revolves around 4 key themes:

The Best Tours – Over the years and after many road-trips, June, Gary and the rest of the team have discovered the best Scotland has to offer.

The Best Guides – Our Driver-Guides are some of the best in the industry, who love sharing their passion and knowledge of Scotland to guests from all over the world.

The Best Coaches – We have a full fleet of modern, air-conditioned coaches (10 - 53 seaters) to accommodate groups of all sizes. We also replace and upgrade our coaches regularly, ensuring they are safe, comfortable and of the highest spec.

The Best Customer Experience - We are with you from the start of your journey all the way through. From the moment you visit our website, call or email us, or enter our shop - we will help you choose the tour that is right for you and be with you every step of the way!

What people love about Fully Guided Tours from Edinburgh

Branka's tour with MacBackpackers was absolutely amazing! Her ability to combine Scottish folklore, history, and personal connections made for an entertaining and enlightening tour. We saw amazing sights, heard great stories, and made memories to last a lifetime -- my only regret is not leaving enough time to take the 5-day tour!
Great tour lots of walking day 2 even in the rain it was fantastic. Tim did his best to maximize what we could see and hike his enthusiasm and love for the park were contagious.
The pace of the Highland fling tour was just right. We visited so many beautiful places. Our driver and guide Tiegan was really good. She gave a lot of interesting information along the way and made sure we had all the details of meeting points and times.
