Members of Dead & Company, a spinoff of the Grateful Dead featuring former members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart along with singer and guitarist John Mayer, are performing Sphere residency called Dead Forever. The residency, which runs from May 16 to July 13, will begin a year after their final tour made a stop in Phoenix .

The Eagles will perform at The Sphere in September and October 2024.

What is The Sphere in Las Vegas?

Described on its website as "a next-generation entertainment medium that is redefining the future of live entertainment," Sphere is an immersive venue that uses haptics (seats that can move and vibrate), atmospheric simulations and visual effects to "transport audiences to places real and imagined." It opened September 2023 just off the Las Vegas Strip .

See the 366-foot-tall venue from the outside at night and it captivates people for its ability to project images from its exterior shell (also called the Exosphere) containing 580,000 square feet of LED lights, whether it's the Earth, the surface of Mars, a blinking eye, or an emoji. It developed a reputation for causing traffic gridlock since the projections began in 2023 during the Fourth of July.

What does the Sphere in Las Vegas do?

The Sphere Experience, the main attraction inside the Sphere, is a two-part attraction. The first part, guided by a humanoid robot called Aura, includes a 360-degree avatar capture and a 50-foot-high holographic installation.

The second part is a viewing of an immersive film called "Postcard From Earth" by director Darren Aronofsky on Sphere's largest, highest-definition screen. "Postcard From Earth" is described as part nature documentary, part science fiction movie.

Sphere has also hosted concerts, with U2 inaugurating it with a 40-show residency that launched on Sept. 29, 2023. Sporting events are coming as well: UFC President Dana White said in February that he booked Sphere for UFC 306, scheduled for Sept. 14, 2024.

Where is the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Sphere is at the intersection of Sands Avenue and Koval Lane, just off the Las Vegas Strip and about 1 mile east of The Venetian.

Its address is 255 Sands Ave., Las Vegas.

Who owns the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Sphere is owned by Sphere Entertainment Co., which was spun off from Madison Square Garden Entertainment in April 2023.

Can you go inside the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Yes, but it will cost you. Every guest must have a ticket for a show to enter the Sphere.

How many people does the Sphere hold?

Sphere can seat 17,500 people and has a standing room capacity of 20,000, according to The Venetian .

Do the seats move in the Sphere?

Of the Sphere's 17,500 seats, 10,000 of them are described as "haptic seats," or seats that are capable of moving and vibrating.

Where are the bad seats in the Sphere?

Any seats with an overhang of upper levels will obstruct the view of the stage and/or screen.

USA Today's 10Best suggests avoiding certain seats in the far right and far left sections in the 100 level, where rows 30 and higher are completely obstructed by the overhang.

The 200, 300 and 400 levels offer the best seats.

How long does the Sphere Experience last?

The Sphere Experience lasts just under two hours, with 60 minutes for the interactive experiences and 50 minutes for the "Postcard From Earth" film.

How much does it cost to go to Sphere Vegas?

It depends on the show and what day you plan to visit.

The Sphere Experience starts at $79 per person during the week and $99 per person on weekends.

Tickets for Dead & Company's Dead Forever residency start at $145 per person.

Is the Sphere worth going to?

Sphere has attracted an assortment of highly positive and highly negative reviews from travelers.

It has a user rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on Google. One user, Phillipe Beaumier , called Sphere "a once in a lifetime experience" and described the immersive audio and visual as "so incredible, you feel like you are part of the travel!"

Tripadvisor users gave Sphere more mixed reviews, with an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Most of its bad reviews were critical of the message of the "Postcard From Earth" film in the Sphere Experience.

A one-star review from a Tripadvisor user named Kathryn W. expressed disappointment with the Sphere Experience's humanoid robots and how "a couple of robots that are comparable to (Amazon's virtual assistant) Alexa can't answer a question." Kathryn added that the moving seats "could be mistaken for someone kicking the back of your chair."

Mysterious monolith appears on Colorado farm, 2 weeks after a similar one in Vegas

A second mysterious monolith appearance has people wondering whether to prepare for some interplanetary visitors.

Northern Colorado residents reported seeing a tall, reflective monolith in Bellvue, about 7 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

It appears similar to another monolith that mysteriously appeared on a hiking trail north of Las Vegas less than two weeks ago.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The Instagram account for the Howling Cow Cafe , a restaurant on Bellvue's Morning Fresh Dairy Farm near where the monolith stands, shared photos of the mirrored structure towering over the vast northern Colorado hills. People are asking what the structure is and how it got there.

"'What might this be?' is the question of the week here at the cafe as many come in to ask about this mysterious structure. A monolith, sculpture, local artist or aliens… we don’t know?!" the Howling Cow Cafe stated in its post .

Second mystery monolith in 2 weeks

The Colorado monolith sprang up in recent days under similar unknown circumstances to the monolith near Las Vegas.

Similar objects have appeared in locations around the world. Near the end of 2020, sightings were reported in places as wide-ranging as a remote part of Utah , Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas and Romania.

Most of these structures have since been removed. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it helped remove the Vegas monolith on June 20, citing public safety and environmental concerns.

A monolith appeared on hiking trail near Las Vegas. Here's what happened to it

travel republic las vegas

A tall, rectangular mirrored structure emerged in the Nevada desert recently. How it got there and why is a mystery.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spotted the monolith over the weekend of June 15 along a hiking trail at Gass Peak in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, about 48 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.

Police helped with the monolith's removal five days later.

In a social media post, the department shared photos of the monolith and asked, "HOW did it get up there??"

The monolith, which looks similar to others that appeared nationwide in 2020 , prompted police to share tips for safely navigating hiking trails "while the internet gets to work on this mystery."

Here's what we know about the Las Vegas monolith.

Another one: Mysterious monolith appears on Colorado farm

Is the monolith still in Las Vegas?

No. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote on Facebook that it assisted in the monolith's removal on June 20, citing public safety and environmental concerns.

Police said the monolith was being stored "in an undisclosed location" while authorities determined how it should be disposed of.

The monolith is 77 inches tall, with each face measuring 13 inches wide, and made from reflective sheet metal folded into a triangle, secured to the ground using rebar and concrete, police said.

Mystery monolith in Las Vegas

The monolith was first spotted over the weekend, puzzling authorities who had no idea how the tall, metallic, mirrored structure got to a trail along a wildlife refuge an hour north of Las Vegas.

Its emergence led the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to advise hikers to use caution when exploring the outdoors, and to follow these safety tips:

  • Tell someone where you intend to hike and when you expect to return home.
  • Research the weather forecast for the area before you go.
  • Bring a first aid kit, food and plenty of water; police suggest bringing double what you think you'll need.
  • Pack inclement weather gear and minimal overnight provisions (hot or cold).
  • Bring a light source, a completely charged cellphone and consider a personal locator beacon (PLB).

What is a monolith?

Monoliths are large obelisk or column-like formations, usually made of stone or rock.

The Gass Peak monolith, which appears to be made from metal, looks similar to other monoliths that mysteriously sprang up around the world in 2020, starting with one installed in a remote area in Utah that was later removed. Another appeared on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.

Others appeared in the United Kingdom, Romania and Australia, to name a few.

The mysterious origins of the monoliths led some to think they were brought by UFOs.

Some linked the monoliths to a New Mexico-based art collective called The Most Famous Artist , which did not take credit for the monoliths — despite offering an " Authentic Alien Monolith " for sale on its website for $45,000.

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

FILE - Motorists head southbound in the local and express lanes on Interstates 90-94 in slow...

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration  expects to screen  over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day,  which reached just under 3 million  last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers,  even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration  issued final rules  that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the  commitments each airline has made  for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.

In the second, Page kept it standing and pieced up the unbeaten Irishman, landing efficient, damaging blows. The third featured a little bit of both, with Machado Garry eventually getting on the back and finishing the fight in the dominant position.

When the tens and nines were totalled, it was Machado Garry that emerged victorious, pushing his record to 15-0 in the process. This was a dangerous and challenging fight for the promising welterweight, and he managed to navigate it successfully and maintain his unblemished record. | Official Scorecards

Macy Chiasson connected with a thudding elbow that immediately opened up Mayra Bueno Silva in the second round, which ultimately ended the fight.

After a competitive first round between the ranked bantamweights, Chiasson was able to get Bueno Silva’s shoulders to the canvas, where she smashed home a big elbow that split the recent title challenger wide open. When the two eventually made it back to their feet, the fight was paused, the doctor was called in, and ultimately the contest was halted as a result of the severity of the gash.

That’s two straight stoppage wins for the former Ultimate Fighter winner, who continues to climb the ranks and showcase her development as a competitor. Chiasson is one of the few fresh emerging names in the 135-pound weight class, and it will be interesting to see what comes next for her after collecting a stoppage over the recent title challenger.

Roman Dolidze made the most of his short-notice opportunity up a division midway through the UFC 303 main card, collecting a unanimous decision win over Anthony Smith.

Following a competitive, low-output first, Dolidze dominated the second, capitalizing on a Smith stumble to pepper “Lionheart” for the remainder of the frame. Smith started to claw back in the third round, connecting with his best shots of the fight in the final two minutes of the contest, but it wasn’t enough to rally all the way back.

The judges were called upon to determine the victor and when the scores were totalled, it was Dolidze that came out ahead, garnering a sweep of the scorecards. With the win, the Georgian snaps a two-fight slide and gets his third UFC victory in the light heavyweight division, where he remains undefeated for his career. | Official Scorecards

Diego Lopes collected his fourth straight UFC victory, but it wasn’t easy, as Dan Ige gave him all he could handle on an afternoon’s notice.

Lopes came out fast and aggressive as always, taking the fight to Ige, who agreed to step in for Brian Ortega on Saturday afternoon. The two traded throughout the opening two rounds, with Lopes getting the better of things, before Ige had his best moments in the third as the Brazilian rising star began to slow.

All three judges scored it the same way, awarding Lopes a unanimous decision win with 29-28 scores across the board, moving his record to 4-1 inside the Octagon.

This was a gutsy effort by both men, who deserve the utmost respect. Despite myriad issues, Lopes keeps rolling, and should merit another marquee assignment next time out after everything he’s dealt with here. | Official Scorecards

Alex Pereira is operating on another level than everyone else in the UFC right now.

Saturday night, “Poatan” successfully defended his light heavyweight title with a left high kick seconds into the second round that caught Jiri Prochazka all the way out. The follow-up blows were academic.

Pereira is now 4-0 at light heavyweight, with each of his last three victories coming in devastating fashion. He has eight wins and titles in two weight classes all in the span of 32 months; it’s unprecedented what he’s doing. | Official Scorecards

Wet Republic, Las Vegas Review

Nothing says Vegas more than a wild pool party in the blistering heat. Wet Republic in Las Vegas does not disappoint from the party aspect, but with drinks, that is a different story.

I arrived to MGM Grand via an Uber that dropped us right at the day club entrance. We patiently waited in line for our security check. We were patted down; our bags were searched and a metal detector was used. I personally like all of the security measures as it makes for a safer experience. As one of the first 50 people in, the pool was wide open for us to choose our spot for the day. Alongside the pool, guests try to leave shoes and bags, but an employee suggested I use a locker as things tend to get stolen or ruined when left there. I didn’t have a water-proof phone case, either, so I did not want to risk breaking my phone.

The lockers, to my surprise, were $65. I was expecting $25–30, but not $65. My boyfriend, friend and I shoved our shoes, phones, bags and sunscreen into the tiny locker as it was the only option. We then went over to the bar to get drinks before jumping into the pool.

Just like the lockers, drinks were extremely expensive. At about $100 per drink, our mouths dropped open when we received our check: $300 for our first drinks. Once again, it was the only option if we wanted to have a drink for the party.

We jumped in the pool and waded around, talking to others and snapping photos. The venue became packed quickly, but not too much were it was uncomfortable. Feeling a bit tipsy, we ordered another drink (another $300) before the show began.

The headliner, Steve Aoki, arrived on stage and the crowd went wild. We made our way to the front, where the stage met the edge of the pool. Each song made the crowd crazier and, before we knew it, we were all jumping up and down and splashing water all over. The people who showed up in full-glam hair and makeup did not appreciate it, but what do you expect at a pool party concert?

Around $1,000 later, the concert was done, our drinks were gone and it was time to collect our belongings from our locker to head back to our hotel, Mirage. The experience was amazing, but if you are planning to purchase tickets to Wet Republic, plan on spending a pretty penny for drinks and a locker.
