Hampton court palace garden festival, location: richmond upon thames, date: sunday 7th july 2024, price: £62 per person (price includes coach travel & admission).

The Hampton Court Garden Festival (formerly The Hampton Court Flower Show ) is an annual British flower show, held in early July.

The show is run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) at Hampton Court Palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames .

The show features show gardens, floral marquees and pavilions, talks and demonstrations.

Erected on the north and south sides of the Long Water in Hampton Court Park, it is the second major national show after the Chelsea Flower Show but has a different character, focusing more on environmental issues, growing your own food and vegetables and cookery, as well as selling gardening accessories, plants and flowers.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink at the Garden Festival.

With an open theme, the beautiful Show Gardens category allows talented designers to turn unique artistic plans into a feast for the eyes.   The Get Started Gardens aim to inspire all who are new to gardening.   These gardens showcase simple, low cost and achievable ideas using reliable plants that are affordable and easy to look after.

The floral fiesta continues in the Floral Marquee, which is filled with beautiful plants and flowers grown by over 90 nurseries.   There’s also Plant Heritage, Plant Village and the Potting Bench – with demos from the growers.

The Romney Marsh is a mysterious region of Kent, rich in history and legend.

We will meet our Blue Badge Tour Guide just off the M20 at Ashford at 10.30am for morning refreshments (Not included) before driving out onto the remote Romney Marshes.

Marshmen established a wild reputation with smuggling and felonious deeds rife in a world where men drank beer a full century before the rest of the country and evacuated their sheep before their women during the war!   The bleak, timeless character of the marsh made it popular with artists and writers including Noël Coward and Ian Fleming who found inspiration from marsh place names like Moneypenny  Farm. We will stop and visit one of the mediaeval churches that pepper the marsh.

Dotted across the peculiar landscape of Dungeness – the UK’s only desert there are old railway carriages first dragged across the shingle nearly one hundred years ago.   Today they change hands for an awful lot of money.

We will stop here for fresh fish & chips and a cuppa at the legendary Pilot Inn.

After lunch we take a pleasant drive via Camber Sands to Rye.   There will be time to pick a spot for afternoon tea (Not included) before heading home at 4.45pm.

Buckingham Palace State Rooms and The Royal Mews

Since the 19th century, the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace has been home to the royal collection of coaches and carriages.

It has played an important role in many memorable State and ceremonial occasions, such as His Majesty’s Coronation, Royal Weddings and the Trooping of the Colour.

Today the Royal Mews provides a unique opportunity for visitors to see the work of the Royal Household department that provides road transport for The King and members of the Royal Family by both horse-drawn carriage and car.

The Mews is also home to the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, these are the horses that pull the royal carriages, each named personally by His Majesty.

Undoubtedly the most dazzling vehicle at the Royal Mews is the Gold State Coach, which was built for George III in 1762.   As its name suggests, the surface of the coach is covered almost entirely in real gold leaf.   It weighs almost four tonnes, requires eight horses to pull it, and has carried every monarch to their coronation since 1821.

The State Rooms at the heart of Buckingham Palace provide the setting for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining and is where The King welcomes guests from all walks of life.

The rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Vermeer and Canaletto, sculpture by Canova, exquisite Sèvres porcelain and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.   Highlights include the Throne Room, Ballroom, White Drawing Room, Picture Gallery and others.

We have a 10.30 entry time into the Royal Mews  and a 1pm entry into Buckingham Palace.

Great Yarmouth

You may decide to take a trip out to the Scroby Sands to  view the Seals in their natural habitat.

Watch how  rock is made  or  try some Yarmouth Bloaters.

Thursford Collection – Behind The Scenes Tour

Today we go behind the scenes of one of the UK’s leading Christmas shows and undercover the secrets behind its success.

The Thursford Christmas Spectacular has been entertaining theatre lovers for over 45 years with its seasonal show becoming an annual fixture for many during November and December.   Each year, thousands flock to this must-see event, with many travelling across the country. Last year’s show was the biggest showcase and most immersive yet.

But now, the Thursford Collection is welcoming guests on a exclusive backstage tour, offering the chance to uncover what goes on behind the scenes, including a look inside performers dressing rooms and getting up close in the costume store, which houses over 2000 costumes.    Guests are also encouraged to bring their own questions to find out everything about the show and more.

FOUR NIGHT HALF BOARD SHORT BREAK

For this trip, we will be staying at the Hampton by Hilton Hotel in Bristol.   The hotel is superbly located for both business and leisure travellers in the heart of the city centre.  This trip offers coach travel, four nights half board Hotel and includes excursions to SS Great Britain, the Blue Glass Factory, a City Dock cruise with cream tea and a four hour Blue Badge guided tour which will include the Clifton Suspension Bridge and visitor centre.

Brunel’s SS Great Britain is one of the most important historic ships in the world.   When she was launched in 1843, she was called ‘the greatest experiment since the creation’.   No one had ever designed so vast a ship, nor had the vision to build it of iron.   Brunel fitted her with a 1000 hp steam engine, the most powerful yet used at sea.   Perhaps most daring of all, Brunel rejected using conventional paddle wheels to drive his ship.   Instead, he gave the SS Great Britain a screw propeller.   This was the newest invention in maritime technology.   By seeing how to combine these key innovations, Brunel created a ship that changed history.

On 7 April 1970, a team of expert divers managed to re-float the SS Great Britain, after spending days plugging holes in the ship’s hull and pumping out water.   It took two more weeks, working in terrible weather conditions, for the salvage team to secure the ship on to a huge floating pontoon.   Finally, on the 24th of April, the ship began her 87 day voyage back to Bristol across the Atlantic Ocean.   The 8,000-mile journey to Avonmouth was the longest ever under tow, and the re-floating and return to Bristol beneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge was watched by crowds of spectators and millions on television.

The SS Great Britain Trust is a dedicated education charity with a vision to protect the legacy of Brunel and the SS Great Britain and inspire engineers and entrepreneurs of the future.   Alive with hundreds of sights, sounds and even smells inspired by real passenger accounts, the ship and its two adjacent museums allow you to discover Brunel’s Victorian world and experience life on board.

Sandringham Flower Show

One of the most prestigious horticultural events in the East of England.

Now in its 139th year, it is much more than just a Flower Show.   It is a unique event offering not only the best in horticulture but also an excellent day out, filled with family entertainment.

Set in the magnificent surroundings of Sandringham Park with Sandringham House and Sandringham Church as a backdrop for this one-day.   From the beginning the Show has been privileged to enjoy Royal patronage and traditionally the Royal Patron attends the Show.   Many of the region’s leading nurseries and horticultural specialists exhibit.   In addition to these displays the show features display gardens by leading designers, around 200 trade stands (both horticultural and general), a craft marquee, main arena events, children’s entertainment and a military band.   The Royal marquees contain the competitions in vegetables, fruit, flowers and floral art, with the entries grown by local residents; there are also some open classes which anyone may enter.   In the amateurs’ marquee, local gardening and horticultural clubs enter a judged display competition, whilst the Horticultural Trades marquee features displays by leading nurseries.

Bristol Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

This iconic event has been a steadfast in the UK’s event calendar for more than four decades.    With the city of Bristol playing the best matched host as the birthplace of ballooning in Europe, and now the capital of the sport worldwide.

With mass ascents of over 100 hot air balloons scheduled, visitors have the chance to see the compact central arena awash with a rainbow of colour at dusk (approx. 6pm) to mark the closing of the day before the start of evening celebrations.   During the day, a programme of entertainment, traders, exhibitors, caterers, and activities allow visitors to experience the magic of ballooning and this unique day out even when the weather prevents them from taking flight.

At the heart of the experience of this unique event, is a game of chance – Will these majestic hot air balloons take flight?   With mass ascents of over 100 hot air balloons scheduled twice daily, visitors have the chance to see the compact central arena awash with a rainbow of colour.

Ballooning is weather dependent, specifically in relation to wind so this is built into the experience.   As forecasts can change, and the weather around Ashton Court Estate can be very localised any decision to fly is left until the pilot’s briefings, which take place just before a scheduled flight.

A countdown and smoke cannon then reveals whether it is safe for pilots to fly.   If they don’t fly the Fiesta has refocussed attention to introduce multiple opportunities for visitors to still experience the magic of ballooning.

If they do fly, visitors are given a spectacle like no other.   The chance occurrence of witnessing a mass ascent is awe-inspiring and truly magical thanks to the incredible balloon teams, a compact arena, and the backdrop of the city of Bristol.

Perched on a clifftop overlooking pristine sandy beaches, Cromer found fame as a tradtional seaside resort in Victorian times.

A legacy of these days is Cromer’s magnificent Pier,  which now hosts the last “End Of The Pier Show” in Europe and was voted 2015 Pier of the Year.

At the bottom of the cobblestoned Gangway is the Henry Blogg Museum, named after the town’s most distinguished lifeboatman, who won the George Cross and the British Empire Medal.   Nearby you’ll see on the shingle the fishing boats that go out every day to catch the famous  Cromer Crab.    The reason these little brown crabs are so tasty, meaty and succulent?   It’s because they feed on the chalk reef just offshore, the longest in the world.

Thursford Collection – Steam Back In Time

This morning we visit Thursford, the world’s largest collection of steam engines and organs, hear Robert Wolfe one of the world’s leading Theatre organists play the mighty Wurlitzer, ride on fairground carousels and the gondola and watch silent movies (Rides are not included in the admission price).

The Mighty Wurlitzer is the centrepiece of the Collection!   There is a half hour show with the resident organist, Robert Wolfe, performing each day during the Summer Season at 12.30pm.   In the days of silent movies, when there was no soundtrack on film, the atmosphere was created “on the spot” by the pianist improvising a mosaic of mood music.   In due course the pianist was replaced by the more chic, up market cinema organist, and the cinema organ par excellence was undoubtedly the Mighty Wurlitzer.

At 1.45pm we rejoin your coach for the drive to the town of Holt and the North Norfolk Railway. The Clacton air-show takes place on the sea front at Clacton On Sea Essex every August.

At 11am our coach will take you to the Casbah Coffee club.   The Casbah and its owner, Mona Best, brought about many pivotal moments in the early days of The Beatles, shaping their beginnings and providing a home for the distinctive Merseybeat sound which would change the face of popular music forever.   The Casbah knew the savage young Beatles before Epstein: their first live performances were here, in the club they made their own, even being involved in decorating the basement in its distinctive style.

Today we visit the Liverpool Beatles Museum , which houses one of the largest Beatles collections in the world, featuring over 1,000 items.  A visit to the museum is a journey through the early days in Liverpool and Hamburg

Our coach will depart from the hotel at 11am to take you on a three hour Beatles Tour with a knowledgable local guide.  You will be taken to the boys home where they grew up, the pub where Ringo’s mum used to work, their schools, the graveyard where a certain song got its name and much more.

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ is waiting for you at the platform. Wait for the train Conductor to invite you and the other passengers to climb aboard, shouting “All aboooooard!”.   Anticipation builds as you step onto the Train to be escorted to your seat by the Chefs from the film.   Before long, scenes from the film come to life as dancing Chefs and Waiters arrive to serve cookies and hot chocolate.   The children are invited to engage these exciting characters who are eager to hear from the youngsters about what makes the Christmas season special to them.   While the hot chocolate lingers in your mouth and warms your tummy, you will listen as the story of The Polar Express is told in its entirety.   Chefs show pages from the beautifully illustrated book for the whole carriage to follow.   A smile grows on your face as you watch your child become absorbed in the wonderment of the story.

An unmissable experience at the heart of Royal Ascot.   This enclosure is synonymous with spectacular racing, high fashion and extraordinary millinery views from the Grandstand and Parade Ring.

The Queen Anne Enclosure is the equivalent of flying business class and is the only public enclosure at Ascot Racecourse that offers views of the renowned Parade Ring.

While it might not be the most exclusive area of the course, it epitomises everything that is Royal Ascot.     The Queen Anne Enclosure badge holders will enjoy unrivalled views of the action, beautiful woodlands and atmospheric terraces to watch the racing and Royal Procession.

Although guests will need to adhere to a dress code, rules for the Queen Anne Enclosure are less strict than the Royal Enclosure, making it the ideal base for entertaining.

Royal Ascot Finale Day 2025 (Windsor Enclosure)

Date: saturday 21st june 2025.

Royal Ascot, a race founded by Queen Anne in 1711, takes place each June at the Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.   Each day, members of the royal family attend, officially opening the event.
