Star Trek: Coda – Book III: ‘Oblivion’s gate’ Review: The Star Trek Literary Universe Ends With A Bang, Not a Whimper

star trek coda book 3

Review: Star Trek: Coda – Book III “Oblivion’s Gate”

So… we’ve reached the end.

Taking the baton from James Swallow and Dayton Ward , David Mack , now a 29-time Star Trek novelist, has the enormous task of bringing home the end of the Star Trek literary universe.

If you’re reading this review, you probably know that the Star Trek: Coda trilogy is a way to do just that: bring the post-2005 Star Trek novel universe to a close, an effort that the trilogy’s authors thought necessary considering the ongoing on-screen Star Trek projects like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard along with the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series.

What we appreciated about Oblivion’s Gate is that it’s clear the stakes are deeply personal, despite the universe-spanning story. The multi-universe threat our heroes face thanks to The Next Generation ‘s one-time enemy, the Devidians, is the overarching plot sure, but Mack certainly doesn’t shy away from digging deeply into intense loss and personal suffering. Taken at face value, we know our heroes need to make the ultimate sacrifice to stop the threat facing them – that is, erasing themselves and their entire universe from existence – and that the road to that solution isn’t an easy one. But having interpersonal risk associated with the threat certainly helps bring the stakes closer to home as the Temporal Apocalypse gets underway.

“Good or bad – it no longer matters, Beverly. This is our last stand. We must hold this ground until our task is done, or else we lose everything. Not just all we’ve had, but all that anyone, anywhere, anywhen , has ever had, or ever will have.” Jean-Luc Picard to Beverly Crusher

Those who have finished the second book in this trilogy know that our heroes had to take shelter in the Mirror Universe to escape Admiral William Riker, who is being influenced by some kind of temporal personality disorder. Oblivion ‘s Gate hits the ground running, and soon enough we are introduced to even more familiar characters, such as the captain of the CSS Enterprise , Jean-Luc Picard, and Director Savvik of Memory Omega, a scientific facility that houses all kinds of advanced technology. While in the Mirror Universe, our heroes learn a fascinating truth about their existence: they are actually not part of the most stable – and therefore most important – timeline, the Prime Timeline, but rather merely a branch of it.

“Prime Timeline” should be a familiar term to fans, who know that it refers to canonical Star Trek — the stuff we’ve seen on the large and small screen. This is a jarring discovery for the book’s heroes, who realize that they must sacrifice their own timeline – what they call the First Splinter timeline – to ensure the Prime Timeline survives the Devidians’ attack. Indeed, the Prime Timeline is the only timeline that can survive the Temporal Apocalypse. Without giving anything away, we were quite pleased with how Mack introduces the First Splinter and Prime Timelines to the lit-verse characters, and as you learn about how the First Splinter timeline was created, you’ll never look at a particular event from a certain Star Trek movie the same way again.

In our experience, this book was incredibly emotionally draining; we imagine that feeling would multiply the more you’ve been invested in the Star Trek lit-verse. This emotional turmoil was mainly due to the enormous existential threat our characters face, and how each person deals with their impending and inevitable erasure from existence. To his credit, Mack manifests existential conversations between a myriad of relationships, such as father and daughter (Data and Lal), husband and wife (Jean-Luc Picard/Beverly Crusher or William Riker/Deanna Troi), star-crossed lovers (Worf and K’Ehleyr), and even extra-natural entities (Wesley and… other versions of Wesley). One can’t help but reflect on humans’ “normal” existential fears while reading this book, and we credit Mack for really digging into this aspect of the human condition to help tell his story.

“Forgive me, Rene. In all of history, there have been few good deaths, but a great many bad ones. I fear are all about to share in the latter.” Picard to his son.

We can only imagine the kind of pressure David Mack was under in writing this entry of the Coda trilogy. How does one end an entire library of Star Trek lore? While this book may not satisfy everybody’s expectations (we’re sure that no book could have), for our money Mack accomplishes his mission with grace. We can’t help but imagine him writing this book as if he were a choreographer for a dance, where the dancers gracefully complete their complex moves around the stage as they head upbeat toward their grand finale.

Importantly, this grand finale is given room to breathe. It may not surprise you that at 422 pages, Oblivion’s Gate is Mack’s longest book, and only rarely do we consider some parts of this novel unnecessary or filler. Rest assured that your favorite Star Trek lit-verse characters are treated with respect in their final moments, and we were largely happy with how Mack chose to bring ends to these characters. And speaking of ends, we want to mention that the grace note at the end of the book – a short chapter that helps frame the lit-verse and future canonical Star Trek as equally notable works of art – will make you crack a smile and marvel at Mack’s creativity.

The only major criticism we want to level against Oblivion’s Gate is Mack’s penchant for overwhelming technobabble. This may seem like a strange critique for a Star Trek production, but in this book, Mack really seems to indulge in the highly technical and fantastical sci-fi explanations for what’s happening to our characters. For even those who are veterans of Star Trek ‘s inherent use of sci-fi silliness, this book leans way too much into it. Sometimes, you might read a few sentences about the temporal things that are happening, and then pause and ask yourself, “what did I just read?” Of course, oftentimes a character will swoop in with a convenient analogy or comparison to help reorient lost readers, but we can’t help all this could have been accomplished less verbosely. It does help a little that Mack has some characters equally perplexed by the temporal jargon, but such self-reflexive writing doesn’t erase our complaint.

One minor criticism against this book is that sometimes it seems that Mack has a hat from which he pulls various character names, and then tries to insert them in this story. For example, Mirror Savvik’s inclusion as director of Memory Omega just seems like fan service. Never is a reason given why it’s her who heads that project. We know the Mirror Universe is not supposed to be exactly like the Prime Timeline, but it seems too convenient to include the aging Vulcan there. The same thing can be said of K’Ehleyr (Prime-Worf’s deceased wife) as the CSS Enterprise ‘s first officer. We get that this trilogy is a celebration of Star Trek ‘s literary efforts over the past couple of decades and you would naturally want to include as many people as possible (on that front Mack does include some cameos and references that long-time fans will enjoy), but just know that sometimes it may not make too much narrative sense when certain characters pop up.

Gripes aside, we want to give kudos to the three authors of this trilogy for having the urge to end Star Trek’ s non-canonical presence in as legitimate a way as possible. Like Dayton Ward explained when his book, Moments Asunder , kicked off the trilogy, he and his fellow novelists wanted to spare Star Trek fans the kind of existential agony that Disney produced for Star Wars fans when that company struck all expanded universe canon from the record. In our opinion, Ward, Swallow, and Mack have earned the thanks of many Star Trek fans.

As you finish this excellent trilogy, here are two pieces of advice: one, read the Acknowledgements! And two, and more importantly, block out time in your day to read through the last 40 or so pages uninterrupted. To return to the choreographed dance analogy from before, you wouldn’t want to get up and walk out of the theater as the last dance number is underway, would you? Mack has delivered a literary effort worthy of such undivided attention, and as you turn the last page of this book, it’s okay to feel exhaustion, sadness, and even grief at having the lit-verse as we know it come to end. But don’t forget to feel happy for the gift that is the Star Trek lit-verse – dozens of books filled with new and familiar characters, countless memorable moments, and lessons and themes that continue the Star Trek spirit. No matter what form Star Trek ‘s novel future entails, we’re sure these elements will be ever-present.

Thanks for this review.

Just FYI, with regard to your remarks about the Mirror Universe characters and their roles in the story: I didn’t “pull them out of a hat.”

All of their roles in the story were logical continuations of their long-running story arcs from the Mirror Universe novels and short stories that have been published by Pocket Books since 2009, starting with the anthologies GLASS EMPIRES and OBSIDIAN ALLIANCES; continuing in the short-story anthology SHARDS AND SHADOWS; and further expanded upon in my later novels THE SORROWS OF EMPIRE, RISE LIKE LIONS, and Section 31: DISAVOWED.

Those tales fully account for how and why Saavik heads Memory Omega, why K’Ehleyr is the XO of Luc Picard’s jaunt-ship, and everyone else we see in the Mirror Universe parts of OBLIVION’S GATE.

As for your dislike of my technobabble … to each their own. It’s like spice in a recipe; everyone has a level of flavoring they prefer. Some like it hot, others not so much. YMMV.

LLAP, David Mack

I appreciate the in depth review, and indeed the tremendous effort that went into the novels. Yet I can’t see the way ST has gone – starting with Enterprise, through the gun-wielding time-wrecking absurdities of the PineKirk movies, to the radically incoherent plotting of Picard, and always subtly drifting to starboard – as anything but a sad, chaotic cash grab in phases of increasing artistic and philosophical bankruptcy. Prodigy – wtf? The novels were the caretakers of GRs vision. Now we lose that too. Okay, but don’t expect me to buy the things.

A satisfying end to an amazing trilogy.

David Mack never disappoints, and this novel was an amazing conclusion to an epic trilogy. I walked away with much to think about, which is one of the many elements of well-written Star Trek material. This trilogy has realigned the novel-verse into the new continuity in a very entertaining, emotional, and satisfying way. Well done!

Great until the end

Awesome trilogy and fantastic third book….up until the end. What a confusing and utterly disappointing epilogue to a well written series.

Marvelous!!!!

What an undertaking! To try to tie everything together in a timeline that gave meaning to all the books I’ve read and the new characters and development that had become literally a part of my life. Please don’t stop writing come up with another timeline I eat your books like candy plowing through them like a knife through butter. Honor integrity Loyalty service. How much better would life be if the principles of Starfleet permeated Our world. Bravo on this coda to all 3 authors!! I love the beautiful turns of phrase, sometimes I have to look up words. And sometimes I just have to stop and enjoy the lexicon. The way you can conjure beautiful images in my mind just with your words. What a gift

The Star Trek "litverse" concluded last week with the publication of Star Trek: Coda: Oblivion's Gate by David Mack.

Final Thoughts

I felt like  a kid Christmas morning when I got my hands on a copy of Oblivion's Gate . I couldn't wait to find out how everything was going to end, and at the same time, I was sad to see it go. Hands down, Oblivion's Gate is the best in the Coda trilogy. And, it has nothing to do with it being the final installment. It's just better written than the Dayton Ward and James Swallow entries. Don't get me wrong, I liked those books, too, but David Mack's descriptions and dialogues are on a whole different level. Like I already mentioned, I was overhyped about Oblivion's Gate from the get-go, and I read it within 24 hours. The stakes have never been higher for our favorite Trek characters, and they're in a race against time to save the "Prime" timeline. Most of the surviving characters from Moment's Asunder and T he Ashes of Tomorrow  get their time to shine in this story. I don't want to give too many spoilers, but the revelation of the creation of the temporal anomaly wasn't too big of a surprise for me. However, at the same time, part of me was surprised David Mack connected the dots back to First Contact . Listen, if you're a passionate or casual Trek reader, you're going to want to read Star Trek: Coda: Oblivion's Gate . Is this the ending we wanted? Maybe not. At least the Star   Trek litverse has a definite finale, unlike what happened with the Star Wars expanded universe. In this case, there's an ending and beginning with  Oblivion's Gate directly tying into the "Picard" universe - for better or worse.

Screen Rant

Star trek: discovery's mary wiseman on tilly's season 5 arc & burnham friendship.

Screen Rant interviews Mary Wiseman about Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Tilly's friendship with Burnham, and her thoughts on the series ending.

  • Tilly's expertise is crucial for Discovery's mission to find an ancient treasure with life-creating power.
  • Mary Wiseman reflected on filming at Pinewood Studios and in stunning locations like Ontario and Iceland.
  • Tilly and Burnham share a strong friendship on and off screen, mirroring Mary's real-life bond with Sonequa Martin-Green.

Mary Wiseman is wrapping up her five-season journey on Star Trek: Discovery , but her character, Lt. Sylvia Tilly, is as important to the show as ever.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Tilly is called away from her role as an instructor at Starfleet Academy by her best friend, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). Tilly's expertise is needed for Discovery's intergalactic hunt for the ancient treasure of the Progenitors , which has the power to create life, itself.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Screen Rant spoke to Mary Wiseman about the end of Lt. Sylvia Tilly's story in Star Trek: Discovery , her memories of shooting on location in Ontario and Iceland, and Tilly's bond with Michael Burnham echoing Mary's real-life friendship with Sonequa Martin-Green.

Mary Wiseman Is Happy With Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's Coda & Tilly's Ending

Screen Rant: Hi Mary, so nice to speak to you again. Pinewood Studios today just announced that the stage you filmed Discovery in was renamed the Star Trek Stage . What was it like working there?

Mary Wiseman: That is so sweet! Oh, my gosh, it was great. That was home for five seasons worth of work. And the people are so nice. It's such a nice studio. I'm going to miss the sweetheart roses and all the great people who work there. I missed Toronto already. Yeah, that's so cool that they named the stage after us. How sweet.

I'm such a big Tilly fan. And one of the things I love about Tilly is her versatility. Because she's at home on the bridge. She's at home in engineering. She can go on away missions, like this week. And she also has a life outside the ship in Starfleet Academy. Tilly is everywhere you want to be.

Mary Wiseman: Right! I love that too. It's been fun getting to jump around the ship and all the different little places. And then, having an engineering background, you really get to get into a lot of different spaces. You can go to med bay, you can end up really anywhere.

I'd love to jump ahead to the finale. You guys filmed a coda to wrap up Discovery . Have you seen it? And is it as emotional as Sonequa and Doug have said it is?

Mary Wiseman: I haven't seen it. I prefer to watch the show in real time. But I've read it. And I don't know. I'm saving that moment for when it's really over. But it's beautiful. I think they did a really nice job wrapping it up. And it feels very congruous with the rest of the season and the rest of the episode that it's a part of. So I'm pleased as punch, and I'm girding myself for when I actually watch it.

And you're happy with how Tilly's Star Trek: Discovery story is wrapped up?

Mary Wiseman: Yeah, for sure. I think there's a beautiful message in the arc that she's had about finding what gives your life value for you. And finding out what you have to offer the world and then doing that.

Mary Wiseman's Memories Of Filming Star Trek: Discovery On Location

Let's talk a little bit about this week's episode, "Whistlespeak." Tilly and Burnham go on an away mission together to a new planet. It's such a classic Star Trek story, meeting new aliens and a new culture. What was that like for you to play, to get off the ship and actually have all these new cast members and extras and everything in costume?

Mary Wiseman: So fun. I love getting the alien treatment. Getting to finally walk into the prosthetics trailer was awesome. And yeah, getting to go shoot on location. Nan, I love a forest, and getting to shoot in that forest was so stunningly beautiful, moody and evocative. And, I mean, I just had an absolute blast. It was an awesome filming experience.

I was wondering if you were in a real forest. Not a soundstage made up like a forest with the AR wall.

Mary Wiseman: No, it's gorgeous, gorgeous forest in Ontario. It's really really lovely.

And you've shot in Iceland, right? Tilly and Saru went on an away mission in season 3, and you got to go to a glacier. What was that like?

Mary Wiseman: Oh my gosh, so cool. Iceland is just stunning. It is so otherworldly, because there's so many different biomes there and it's so influenced by volcanic activity. It's just a place I've never seen before and then getting to shoot there, being on the black sands of Vik and walking beside this beautiful black glacier. Yeah, it was breathtaking. And I spent a lot of time really worried about Doug Jones falling over.

Oh my god. Yeah, that's right. Doug was in prosthetics. He wasn't wearing the boots, though, was he?

Mary Wiseman: Yeah, he was. He's amazing. He's amazing.

Tilly's Friendship With Burnham & Possible Starfleet Academy Future

Tilly and Burnham have one of the all-time great Star Trek friendships. This is a franchise defined by friendship, starting with Kirk and Spock. Tilly and Burnham are such a wonderful pair of female characters who are genuine friends and peers, even with their different ranks. Can you talk a little bit about Tilly and Michael's friendship, and is it the same or different from your friendship with Sonequa?

Mary Wiseman: There are a lot of similarities, I think, because I look up to Sonequa a lot, even though we're like the same age. Tilly admires Burnham a lot and and values her a lot. So there's a lot of correlation there. And I think that they make each other laugh, and Sonequa and I certainly make each other laugh in real life. So all of that stuff about their friendship has been historically incredibly easy to play.

Last question before I let you go: Is there anything you want to say about the possibility of Tilly appearing in the next show, Starfleet Academy ?

Mary Wiseman: I don't know. I don't know.

About Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. ‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Mary Wiseman on Tilly’s Protective Side, Ultimate Goal, and Finale Ending

Mary Wiseman as Tilly in 'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5 Episode 2 'Under the Twin Moons'

Spoiler Alert

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for  Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 6 “Whistlespeak.”]

Just as Tilly’s ( Mary Wiseman ) questioning herself when it comes to teaching, an away mission puts her in a position to showcase just why she made the right career move as  Star Trek: Discovery ‘s final season continues.

Former roommates Michael ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and Tilly head off to collect the next clue to the puzzle that will lead them to the Progenitors’ power—the ultimate goal of the season and something they  really don’t want to fall into the wrong hands—and in doing so, the latter is put in a position to take one of the younger people on the planet they’re on under her wing.

After that, we can’t help but notice that Tilly seems to operate best under pressure as a teacher, like here and the Season 4 episode with the cadets that led her to leave  Discovery . That does tie into her time as part of the crew before she move over to the Starfleet Academy, says Wiseman.

“Being able to problem solve on your feet is definitely an important quality in someone on a starship. I also think that maybe a sort of protective mode brings a certain side of Tilly out that is highly competent,” she tells TV Insider.

Each mission is taking them closer to the ultimate power, with each piece hidden by a scientist in the past. And each mission also includes a lesson, so what did Tilly learn about herself with this one? “I think Tilly learned how to really listen to younger folks and hear what they’re telling you and let them lead and be a supportive hand on the shoulder,” suggests Wiseman.

Though Tilly is questioning if she’s giving her cadets what they need—one is planning to leave the academy for a position on a cargo vessel—that doesn’t mean she’s questioning her plan. “She’s totally cool to be on  Discovery for the moment to help out with this very important mission, but her ultimately goal is to end up back at the academy,” says Wiseman.

This episode gave us something we always love: plenty of Tilly and Michael. “It was so peaceful and fun to be with Sonequa. It was really fun. We had a blast. It’s been a while since we had a big away mission together,” Wiseman says. “There were lots of opportunities for both friend lovey times and friends joking around times and just the shooting of it was really, really freaking fun to get to be in the forest and spend all that time together. … That park is insanely beautiful, and it was so nice to get to work there.”

Looking ahead, there’s “more adventure, more jumping headlong into the unknown, getting to the bottom of this big, beautiful mystery,” she teases. That’s all leading up to the finale, which “already had a pretty good ending,” she shares. “It kind of naturally felt that way. There’s a lot of closure.” But then they returned after learning the show was canceled, “and the coda that they added on is really heartfelt and loving and I think does justice to the five seasons we’ve been doing this.”

The last time we see Tilly, there’s “gratitude and joy and being at home in herself and her own body.” And while we can’t help but note that she’d be the perfect character to move over to the new  Starfleet Academy series, Wiseman says she doesn’t know if she’ll appear in the Trek universe again.

David Ajala Talks Book & Michael's Complicated 'Discovery' Relationship

David Ajala Talks Book & Michael's Complicated 'Discovery' Relationship

Looking back on the season, she enjoyed filming the scene were Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) had everyone cycle through and gave them 20 words as his way of meeting them. “So many people came through, and it was just a really good setup,” Wiseman recalls.

Furthermore, we got some great stuff with Tilly calling Rayner out on his behavior in that episode as a result. “Rayner really pushed a very particular button in Tilly when she witnessed him shutting down everyone she works with and then finally shutting down someone who she saw being particularly vulnerable in that moment in Stamets [ Anthony Rapp ],” says Wiseman. “That kind of brings the little mama bear out of her, and she was just really fed up. Tilly is so attuned to what people are feeling and so sensitive, and I think being around people who seem to her to be disregarding other people’s feelings is just really frustrating for her. So she got a little snippy with her superior officer, which I think he was pretty forgetting and understanding of. Luckily that’s the language he speaks.”

That ties into what she’s enjoying most about her character this season: “She feels settled in herself and she’s not apologizing for existing, isn’t insecure. I got the opportunity to watch some old stuff recently, and yeah, she was so self-conscious in the earlier seasons and a lot of that has evaporated. She’s still quirky and silly, but is a bit more self-possessed. I think the writers have thread the needle with that really well.”

Looking back, Wiseman “will remember Tilly as a life-changing character and a person who I learned so much with and probably the longest character I’ve ever played continuously, and I probably will just look back with a lot of gratitude and fond memories.” And “it’s been okay” for her saying goodbye, “because it’s Star Trek, there’s just this sense that the legacy lives on and new people come to the show and see these stories. We will see all the fans at conventions and yeah, it doesn’t feel like an ending the way other things feel like an ending.”

How are you hoping the series ends for Tilly? Let us know in the comments section, below.
