World-class Cycling Destination
France is ideal for cycling tours. The country flaunts a temperate climate, with mild winters and warm summers. Throughout the cycling season, from late spring to early autumn, anticipate agreeable temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The peak summer months can be warmer, especially in southern regions, with temperatures occasionally reaching between 25°C and 35°C (77°F to 95°F).
This inviting weather ensures delightful rides, enabling you to immerse in the splendid beauty of the French countryside. This makes bicycle tours in France a delight. And of course, a tour in France is incomplete without savoring its world-class cuisine . From sumptuous croissants to delicate escargots, French gastronomy is a rich tapestry of flavors and traditions.
On your travels, you’ll be enticed to try iconic dishes like coq au vin, bouillabaisse, tarte tatin, and an array of regional specialties . Don’t miss the exquisite French wines and cheeses, as they effortlessly enhance the culinary delights and offer the perfect relaxation after a fulfilling cycling day.
Hassle-Free
Completely customizable, book with confidence, unbeatable support, things to know.
Self-led bike adventures provide a tailor-made and flexible approach to cycling holidays, allowing you to discover at your leisure and modify your schedule or route whenever necessary. Our crew takes care of every detail, from accommodations and detailed plans to GPS guidance and ongoing assistance, ensuring a serene and immersive trip that offers independence, individuality, and authentic cultural encounters.
Our tours are grouped into three difficulty tiers: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging . The categorization is based on the typical day of the tour, even though there might be fluctuations in difficulty over the course of the trip.
Leisurely tours cater to those seeking a laid-back journey through breathtaking scenery, without the demand of traversing great distances or navigating tough terrains. These excursions usually span 30-50 km daily, with an altitude climb of up to 500m. This ensures ample opportunities to pause and soak in panoramas, savor regional dishes, and wander through picturesque towns and hamlets en route.
Moderate bike tours suit those seeking a harmonious blend of picturesque routes and a touch of challenge. Usually spanning 50-80 km daily with an altitude ascent of up to 1000m, these tours take you across captivating landscapes and delightful hamlets, offering a combination of level and undulating terrains. While providing ample opportunities to halt and delve deeper, they also ensure a rewarding cycling exercise.
Challenging bike tours cater to seasoned cyclists keen on testing their boundaries. Ranging from 80-120 km daily with an altitude rise of up to 2000m, these journeys involve navigating rigorous inclines and demanding terrains. However, the breathtaking vistas make the effort worthwhile. While these tours demand top-notch fitness and stamina, the euphoria of achievement felt at day’s end is unparalleled.
We’re committed to finding the perfect fit for you. We partner with several accommodation providers that align with our standards, though their availability can vary, particularly in high-demand periods. Additionally, we can tailor your holiday according to your tastes and financial plan, ensuring we pinpoint the most suitable option for your requirements.
We recommend securing your tour at the earliest convenience, particularly for sought-after tourist spots with limited accommodation availability. Top options frequently get reserved for the summer before the onset of spring.
Catering to dietary needs can fluctuate based on their complexity. In France, vegetarian choices are generally accessible, but sourcing vegan meals might be a challenge in countryside locales or smaller towns. Notably, lunch halts are often at conventional eateries that might not accommodate special dietary preferences beyond their regular offerings. Bear this in mind as you map out your journey.
The prime cycling season spans from mid-April to mid-October. In higher regions like the Alps, it’s best from mid-May to September to avoid snow.
Tours can proceed in light rain with suitable attire. Summer often brings afternoon thunderstorms, so starting tours early is advisable. If adverse weather is anticipated, we’ll aim to modify the tour in advance.

Come and discover our bike trips in France. Cycling holidays in France are the opportunity to be closer to the surrounding nature of this beautiful country. Stroll in the middle of vineyards and vine growers; cycling along canals and rivers; but also lakeside circuit or Atlantic coast ride. So many landscapes that will satisfy everyone’s appetite.
Why opt for a bike tour in France?
Cycling is definitely the ideal way of getting around the area of your choice. Choosing this type of cycling holiday, active without being “too” sportive, is to ensure you to travel freely and tranquility in a preserved and authentic territories, with great satisfaction on arrival. Cycling holidays will also offer you an unbeatable proximity to local people in the region. You will have the opportunity to discover the work of the vine in Bordeaux, or in Burgundy, market gardening in the lot and Garonne, the breeding of ewes and horses in the Basque Country, the duck breeding in Périgord and even the production of caviar in Gironde. Not to mention the culture of oysters.
Why opt for one of our cycling holidays in France?
We create and test for you multi-day cycling trips in France with daily rides on small country roads, bike routes or even bike paths. The routes and itineraries are selected according to the tourist attraction, the length and the difficulty of the cycling stage.
We carry your luggage to the next stage and are at your disposal for any questions or emergencies that may arise during your cycling trip. No more stress of organization or planning. Forgotten, the hustle and bustle of everyday life!
Accommodations at each stage are also carefully selected. The criteria include comfort, hospitality and service, charm and location. When all these criteria are met, it’s perfect! Every night you are expected for a well deserved rest in hotel or guest house. Relax by the pool, in the garden or on your balcony before savoring the local gastronomy at the hotel’s restaurant, table d’hôte or in the charming neighboring village.
Cycling steps
The stages are usually 40 to 60 km per day. That means 150 to 300 km on your entire trip. This is quite enough to appreciate the diversity of the region visited. Each day of cycling will take you to visit remarkable sites. Prestigious wine estate, most beautiful village of France, bastide and medieval city, feudal or royal castle. Not to mention many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. .. Must have!
You can bring your own bikes. If not, our revised and equipped touring bicycles are delivered to the first accommodation. Depending on the difficulty of the bike tour and your fitness or simply your choice, you can opt for an electric bike … really bluffing.
We take care of your luggage, pick them up at the hotel reception and take them to the next stop.
Finally, we realize a road book with multiple information and tourist tips … you can follow or not during your cycling holiday day by day. A GPS App is also available to facilitate your navigation.

You want to know more about our Cycling holidays ? Here is the FAQ !
To plan a bike tour to embrace at its fullest the local sights and cultures.
Choosing winding country roads, small trails added to the leisurely pace of a bike allows an unparalleled proximity to nature and a deep immersion in our landscapes. This in turn enables you to make striking new discoveries, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful settings that would have normally gone unnoticed.
To embark on a cycling trip is also to rekindle one’s appreciation for the small things. To bask in the soothing breaks the roads offer, enjoying a well deserved rest after a day of rewarding effort. Finally the silence of this mode of transportation offers the possibility to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife!
Need we remind that cycling is a mean of travel which naturally preserve the environment in which we work with.
Because we are local and work with locals.
We do our best to share with you our meetings with our partners, true representatives of local charm. We are thus surrounded by local actors and producers, small businesses, warm family structures, all in love with their region, its heritage and its culture and all eager to share their passion.
Because we are locals and work with locals. We do our best to insure you meet with our partners, true ambassadors of the local traditions. Thusly we have surrounded ourselves with local personalities (actors?), small structures, family businesses, whom bear a great love for their region, heritage, culture and are all eager to share their passion.
For more than 18 years, we have thus built a reliable and stable network of partners. With accommodation providers, restaurateurs, bike rental companies, facillitators, guides, carriers and other loyal collaborators. Allbrought together in a common concern for quality of service, of which you will be the first to benefit.
The following testimony from one of our clients was overwhelming.
« … It became obvious at a glance that you planned the route as a cyclist would, the route was leisurely and scenic. Our choice of accommodations could not have been better- you obviously have a great rapport (they all talked a lot of you) with these hotels and guesthouses because we were treated like royalty wherever you’d made arrangements. We met other cyclists along the way who had used other travel agencies, and our impression was that Evazio clearly had a more personal experience of the tour that we did… ”
Joel Smith & Kathy Keehan
Because we personally study, scout and test our cycling tours. Criteria include the difficulty of the route, the length of the stages, the historical, cultural and natural sightseeing, all while taking pleasant small roads with little traffic or cycle paths, forest trails or footpaths.
Finally, the itinerary by bike must include accommodation with all the customary services and comforts, in addition to charming locations!
The cycling industry has boomed in recent years, the use of green and secure bike lanes and roads has spread. Some of these are interesting and might peek your interest, others less so.
We advise you on these bike tours by providing you with alternatives that are more focused on cultural aspects and natural landmarks.
“… The five days we spent on the cycling holiday were the absolute highlight of our trip. What made it particularly agreeable was the effort you put in to make the whole course run on such quiet roads. It was a pleasure and far exceeded our expectations in this regard…. “
For more distant cycling trips, we work with local experts and operators that are in the same mindset as us. No one can be an expert in every field and so we cultivate close collaborations to guarantee quality of services provided, of which you will naturally be the first to benefit.
Our cycling trips come included with, among other things: the number of nights, a daily travel distance, the level of comfort desired.Naturally and within reason, these sojourns can be personalized.
On request, we can adapt our formulas by adding extra nights, rest days, changing the range of accommodations etc.
For our bicycle trips, we provide quality bikes suitable for riking, that are comfortable and have a good weight / robustness ratio.
Electric bikes are available on the majority of our tours, fit for both men and women, and with a fully autonomous daily battery capacity. Bikes are serviced before each use and are equipped with at least one rear bag, a handlebar bag, an anti-theft device (for 1 or 2 bikes) a repair kit (for 1 or 2 bikes) and a helmet.
For cycling trips with significant relief, you can also opt for a road bike delivered with a saddle bag.

Thank you to the fantastic Breakaway Team for organising the perfect family celebration for Simon’s birthday. The itinerary worked perfectly and your attention to detail was second to none, so we were all able to focus on enjoying ourselves and making the most of all the cycling and other fun activities you organised for us. The cycling trips were varied and interesting with just the right amount of healthy competition! The wine tastings were excellent - each one different and we learned so much about the different wines of the region. Every meal was carefully selected and delicious. Janice and Murray are the perfect combination for a tour like this, and we were lucky enough to have the lovely Annabelle with us too. All in all completely brilliant. Thankyou.

Amazing scenery, luxury accommodation and all planned to perfection. Not only were Janice, Murray and Annabelle excellent guides and passionate cyclists, but they were also great company and we really enjoyed getting to know them.

Thanks to Janice and Murray for a great experience. Louise and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Louise is a cyclist and I’m an ‘off the couch’ cyclist and not afraid to say the thought of this trip had me worried about letting myself and the team down. Janice and Murray tailor made the trip so I could enjoy it too. They sourced an hybrid eBike for me (I called it the ‘Marriage Saver’) so that I didn’t lose the will to live while chasing Louise, Murray and Janice up some of those climbs. If you had told me before the trip that I would ride over 700 kms with 8000+ metres of elevation in 7 days and still have a smile on my face I would have laughed at you. J&M had clearly done their research to ensure that every switch back brought another breathtaking view. I would highly recommend Breakaway Cycle tours to anyone thinking of doing a cycling holiday.

Taking my family on a Breakaway Cycle Tour gave us one of our most memorable holidays . Seeing my sons and daughter taking on and conquering some of the worlds most iconic climbs was particularly gratifying. Janice and her team gave us such a great experience in France that we came back in 2018 to ride the Italian Alps. We are already planning our next trip.

I’m not exaggerating to say that the French Alps tour with Breakaway Cycle Tours was the highlight of my life on two wheels so far! We were blessed with perfect weather, and the alpine scenery was postcard-perfect everywhere you looked. It was a thrill to test ourselves against some of the cols used in the TdF, and live what felt like the “pro lifestyle” for a few days being looked after off the bike by Janice and Murray. The only downside is that the regular loops and climbs back home will now feel pretty mundane in comparison ... which just means we will have to arrange another Breakaway in the future!
Louise | Australia
"Great experience- Our children voted it the best family holiday ever! and we have shared alot of great family holidays in the past. Would definitely recommend non cyclists give it a go, my electric bike was excellent and enabled me to keep up with the game! Altogether an amazing trip, great scenery and routes plus wonderful accommodation, really spacious and authentically french! "

Joining the Breakaway Cycle Team's Tour of Italy and Switzerland was an exceptional experience! Over the course of a week, my family scaled many of the iconic Giro d'Italia climbs and revelled in the breathtaking atmosphere of the Italian and Swiss alps. Everything from the hotel selection to the riding was personalised for our family and was pitch perfect! This amazing experience could not have been accomplished were it not for our exceptional tour hosts -- Janice, Murray and Annabelle -- who happily ensured that we did not have to worry about anything other than cycling and focusing on the amazing scenery surrounding us. I cannot wait for the next Breakaway Cycling adventure!

2019 my first TDU with Breakaway! I had a fantastic time ! Janice and Murray and their lovely daughter Annabelle were the perfect hosts with everything planned to perfection! So much attention to detail in our rides and taking care of our bikes and willing to change plans to suit our needs when required! Great accommodation and delicious picnic lunches! And so much fun! I definitely would go cycling with Breakaway again

After 3 of the most amazing weeks in France my journey has come to an end. If you are looking to cycle in France, I cannot recommend these guys highly enough. Above and beyond all expectations. I've also met and made some new friends along the way, who made the journey even more special. I look forward to catching up with all of you soon. Au revoir France, hope to see you again one day.

Bike tours in France
Explore france on the best guided cycling tours.
Few countries stir the imagination like France. You may have already pictured yourself bicycling through small villages composed of beautiful stone buildings, quaint cafés, and Romanesque churches that gaze across the valley at each other under the Provençal sun. Perhaps you’ve imagined yourself strolling through the lovely cobblestone streets, or enjoying the local specialties as you fill your senses with the pervading sights and scents of a traditional market. You may have always wanted to look out from atop an impenetrable medieval castle or a luxurious Renaissance château, the entire place resonating with centuries of history, romance and revenge.
Let us help you bring these images alive. At ExperiencePlus! we’ve been leading bicycle and walking tours all over the world since 1972, and we have a number of bicycle tours in France. Travel with us to visit Roman ruins and historic market towns in Provence, explore the royal castles of the Loire Valley, and discover Europe’s best rural cycling roads in the Dordogne River valley. Sample the world’s finest wines in Burgundy and the Côtes du Rhone, and trace Mediterranean history in Corsica. As you experience all of this on our bicycle tours, you’ll enjoy charming and comfortable lodging as well as the wonderful food that draws so many gourmet lovers to France.

Here’s Why Provence, France is a Must-See Cycling Destination
Christina c.: guided family tour in tuscany.
“Outfitters provided high-touch, personalized service when planning our guided tour to Chianti, Italy. Our guide, Bruno, was a world class rider and knew the region like his own back yard. Road support was always minutes away, whether we needed it or not. An e-bike was magically delivered to my 11-year-old daughter on day 3, when the climbs had become too difficult for her. We had wonderful service and support from Outfitters and I highly recommend them.”

Misty M.: Self-Guided in Provence & Guided in the French Alps
“WOW! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE!!! Jamie and Joy Gilpin – along with their staff members – created one of the most memorable bike adventures we’ve ever experienced. My husband and I have had the very good fortune of biking all over the world, which should underscore how well planned and organized Outfitter Bicycle Tours is! Every detail was considered, from the exceptional accommodations at every turn….to the expert mechanical experience….to the enormous amount of fun and laughs we had with all who joined us. In fact, we are already planning our next bike tour with Jamie and Joy…We can’t wait! HIGHLY recommend Outfitter Bicycle Tours!!”

Dale A.: Self Guided Tour in Provence
“We did a relaxed bike tour around Provence, France. It was fantastic! OBT and Jamie had everything organized for us. Our self-guided tour was well mapped out, and we were able to cycle at our leisure and take in the spectacular landscape. We stopped along the way and soaked in the beautiful French countryside. We were warmly welcomed at the hotels and inns that OBT organized for our tour. We had a ‘concierge’ who was very knowledgeable, spoke English fluently, and was available to us daily. We loved our bicycle tour….I wish it could have gone on longer. I highly recommend OBT for any bicycle tour. OBT is very accommodating, responsive and attentive; it was very easy to plan a trip with Jamie. Thanks for a memorable vacation OBT!”

Will W.: Custom Self Guided Tour
We had one of the trips of a lifetime organized by Outfitter. We had originally planned to organize the trip ourselves, but we were SO glad we chose Outfitter. They planned great days of riding, put us up in charming hotels with great food, and took care of all the hassles of pickups and baggage transport, etc. We could not have been happier with our trip and will definitely use them for our next one!

“Fantastic tour. The routes were all exceptionally well planned…. If you want to have a great, well planned, supported bike adventure, look no further. We changed to this company at the last minute. Great decision.”
Geoff Harris: Guided TdF Tour
I always had an idea that I wanted to go see the Tour de France once in my life. Well, I have now gone on three TdF trips with Outfitter Bicycle Tours as the experience was that good. Jamie and Joy’s low key, friendly and flexible approach made riding in the Alps an amazing experience. They did a great job of helping me determine what would maximize my experience. If I wanted an easier day, they had a suggestion to make that happen. If I wanted to try a different climb than the “recommended” route, they were able to help me make that happen. Support was great and they were there when we really needed help when we got caught in bad weather. Accommodations can be a bit tricky in the Alps during the tour, but we always stayed in lovely places that had good to great food. Overall, one of the best values you gan get for your cycling tour dollars.

Kyle & Gregg Caruso: Self Guided Tour
My dad and I had a great trip to Asheville, NC on a self guided tour where Jamie and his staff were excellent. Not only were they super flexible with where we wanted to ride but also very helpful in recommending best spots to eat/drink around town. They took care of all the logistics and planning and we just had to show up and ride. Already thinking about another trip and would definitely recommend to friends.
Jodi Stolle: Self Guided Tour
It has been months since I rode through Provence with Outfitter Bicycle Tours but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about that journey. It has inspired me to purchase my own bike and ride every week. My journeys are not quite the same but I still love to ride and it keeps me connected to where it all began in Provence.

Charming Tuscany
Goethe, too, loved Tuscany, the home of eminent people like Giacomo Puccini and Leonardo da Vinci; Tuscany impresses all of our senses: mouth, nose, ears, and even the stomach. Perhaps with a portion of spaghetti al pesto and a classic Chianti? As a cyclist, you will get many opportunities to perceive the full scale of impressions, colors, shapes, and sounds in this region: the elegance of magnificent castles, the use of forms in the stylish villas, surrounded by the silvery green of the olive groves and the purple of the lilies. Visit Florence, “la bella” – the beautiful one, Siena, Vinci, and Pisa and enjoy the solitude of the wide hills cycling on quiet roads. For centuries, Tuscany has enchanted people. You will understand once you have been on this trip you will understand why!

Every day there is something new to discover on this trip: either the adventure playground on Mainau Island, the pile dwellings in Uhldingen, the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen or the Ravensburger Spieleland activity park. The stages are kept extra short so that there is always enough time to discover, to relax, to have an ice cream, to swim and to enjoy.
The Southern Black Forest
The Southern Black Forest Tour is surprisingly relaxed. You cycle past the typical Black Forest farms with low-hanging roofs that nestle close to the forested, green mountains. On the circular tour from Freiburg, you overcome most of the altitude metres by train and often enjoy rolling downhill. This way you can not only observe the serenity of the people of Baden, but also experience it for yourself.
South Tyrol for families
South Tyrol from its best side! You will set off by bike from the Meran basin. You will keep cycling through orchards and vineyards and past palaces and castles and by doing so you mill make your way across Bolzano, Trento and Rovereto and then finally to the magnificently blue lake Garda. You can enjoy the tasty Italian meals just as much as the Mediterranean scenery. In almost every district in southern Tyrol you will find a swimming pool to cool down in. Or you can grab yourself a tasty “Gelati” on your way. At the end of your family cycle tour, the beach area by the glistening lake Garda is waiting for you with its many places to play and to do sport. Swimming fun and “Dolce Vita” is guaranteed for the whole family whilst on the cycle tour in southern Tyrol and in Trentino.
Alpe Adria Cycle Path from Salzburg to Grado
From the Alps to the sea! What a good association of Austria‘s impressive Alpine region and Italy‘s southern flair. On your bike you simply experience more: more romantic rivers and roaring waterfalls, more pretty historic town centres and defiant castles, more craggy mountain peaks and of course an increase in scenic, architectural and culinary delights. And last but not least: the Adriatic Sea.

From Munich to Venezia
During this stunning holiday starting from the Bavarian state capital via the Reschen-pass all the way into the cultural city of Merano even not so experienced cyclists gleefully manage to cross the Alps. You are accompanied by marvellous views en route along Lake Starnberger See. The historic so-called Lüftlmalerei-paintings on the front of the houses in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald will fascinate you. You will marvel at the views onto Mount Zugsspitze, the Karwendel mountains and Mount Ortler. And a best-developed cycle path in South Tyrol will magically bring a smile to your face. This Popular Region In France Is One Of Rick Steves' Favorites For Biking
While there are many breathaking trails bikers should visit at least once , the bucolic Loire Valley region in the heart of France combines rich history with your active pursuits. According to travel connoisseur Rick Steves, this is one of the best European countryside locations for biking because of its flat, well-marked paths, connected towns, and picturesque views. The Loire Valley was also deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 due to its importance as an economic and cultural melting pot and the grand Renaissance-era castles built on its fertile riverbanks. Traversing over 600 miles, the Loire River's massive size can seem daunting to those who don't know how to map out their trip. On his website , Steves says, "Amboise, Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau, and Chinon all make good biking bases and have places to rent cycles. For a convenient home base, try the city of Blois."
Blois is an elegant, riverside city that is an easy two-hour drive south of Paris. There is a wide range of accommodations, from beautifully restored countryside retreats to more modern city hotels. For rentals, visit Détours de Loire Bike Shop, which offers standard, mountain, and electric bikes. Prices for a standard option start at 18 EUR (around $20 USD) for one day.
Biking to castles in the Loire Valley
Many of the Loire Valley's grandest and most iconic monuments are easily accessible by bike. Steves especially recommends cycling from Blois to Chambord, as it's "a level, one-hour, one-way ride along a well-marked, 10-mile route, much of it a bike-only lane that follows the river." The castle at Chambord is open year-round, although the hours vary according to the time of year. Tickets to the château and gardens cost 16 euros, and there is a free cycle rack for your bikes.
For those wanting a longer bike ride, the trip from Blois to the Renaissance château at Chenonceau takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes, covering a distance of 28 miles. This castle is a favorite of Steves, who says it "is a worthy destination for any bike trip through France's Loire Valley." After Versailles, Chenonceau is the most visited castle in France. It is celebrated for its beautiful arched bridge over the River Cher and lavish gardens. The fortress is open 365 days a year, and tickets are priced at 17 EUR (about $19 USD) per adult.
When to bike the Loire Valley
Rick Steves' favorite time to visit France is spring and fall because of the "generally good weather and fewer crowds." The warmest months for the Loire Valley are May through September, when the average temperature hovers around 74 degrees Fahrenheit and rain is minimal. However, this is also the busiest time to visit, and you will likely have to share the bike lanes with many other cyclists. Spring is lovely, as the flowers begin to bloom along the relatively empty lanes. The fall is cooler, especially if you want to enjoy the festivals and harvest season. This is an excellent opportunity to bike to the Loire Valley's best vineyards, where you can find out what 'natural wine' means in France , as it is a specialty of the region.
If you prefer to travel with a group, there is a wide variety of bike tours in the region. Backroads offers six-day group tours during the spring and summer months, starting at $5,799 per person, which includes accommodations, meals, bike rental, and more. Continue your French adventure by checking out the best-rated food tours in Paris .
