Distilleries in Calgary

Mixologist pouring alcohol at Bridgeland Distillery

Alberta is rich with fresh glacier water and vast fields of grain, giving Calgary-based distilleries a delicious advantage when it comes to making farm-to-glass craft spirits. Calgary’s local craft distilleries range from upstarts like Confluence Distilling and Burwood Distillery that push boundaries when it comes to flavour and experimentation to award-winners like Eau Claire Distillery, constantly striving to create that perfect dram of whisky. Stop by these tasting rooms for a drink or to stock up your liquor cabinet — with so much to taste and explore, whether you’re a serious enthusiast or new to the world of craft beverages, you’re bound to find a spirit or cocktail that will suit your taste.

Burwood Distillery

Located in a historic building that was once part of Currie Barracks, Burwood Distillery  is co-owned and operated by two brothers looking to share the craft spirit traditions that they grew up with in Eastern Europe and an experienced master distiller with a background in microbiology. As a result, Burwood pushes the boundaries with its limited-edition whisky releases, seasonal flavoured gins, ready-to-drink cocktails and unique offerings like medica and honey eau de vie, made with honey from the distillery's own hives. Burwood also shares the cool casual Veranda restaurant with its co-tenant Vaycay Brewing Brew Co., which utilizes products from both businesses.

Location: 2566 Flanders Ave SW

Bridgeland Distillery

Named after a historic neighbourhood on the north banks of the Bow River, Bridgeland Distillery is a bold business that specializes in brandy and grappa-like wine-based spirits and whiskies, including a “berbon” made with Alberta Taber corn blended with barley and wheat grown in nearby Penhold. As their whiskies mature, Bridgeland is also offering some fun tipples to tide fans over, including its surprisingly refreshing limoncello and an Amaro originally commissioned by the legendary Spolumbo’s deli. See it all firsthand with a tour of the inner-city distillery, which also serves as an events space.

Location: 77 Edmonton Trail

Confluence Distilling

Confluenc Distilling  came together as a passion project for some friends who love the combination of cocktails and community. Visit the distillery’s hip little tasting room to get a taste for the label’s laidback artisanal vibe, as well as its much beloved vodkas and gins. The signature Manchester gin (named after the neighbourhood the distillery lives in) and Headwater vodka make for the perfect base for a cocktail. Confluence also has some fun with products like its herbal Vinland aquavit and a selection of canned cocktails, including, in the true spirit of inclusivity, a non-alcoholic gin and tonic.

Location: 507 36 Ave SE

Last Best Brewing and Distilling

Calgarians most likely know Last Best Brewing and Distilling  as one of the city’s best brew pubs, but in addition to its very solid line of beers, the company quietly makes some fantastic spirits. After some experimentation with different gin formulas, Last Best now offers up three different gins with very distinctive tasting notes. Pop into the bustling Beltline pub for some drinks and tasty food and grab a few cans of ready-to-drink cocktails to go — each one is designed to make the most of the gins’ intrinsic flavours.

Location: 607 11 Ave SW

YYC Tours - Craft Distillery Tour

Book a 2.5 hour guided tour to some of Calgary's best craft distilleries.

Eau Claire Distillery

Launching in 2014 after Alberta tweaked its liquor regulations to allow for small-batch spirits, this award-winning business bills itself as the province’s first craft distillery. Located in the town of Diamond Valley just a half hour from Calgary, Eau Claire Distillery pioneered the local grain-to-glass movement with a strong lineup of spirits that reflect the taste of Alberta’s terroir. Master Distiller Caitlin Quinn uses locally grown barley to create premium gins, vodkas, and whiskies (including a much-coveted single malt) as well as quirky blends like the prickly pear “EquinOx” vodka and a series of thirst-quenching canned cocktails. After a picturesque country drive out to the Western-themed distillery site, indulge the Prohibition Experience spirit tasting or enjoy some cocktails and bites in the Speakeasy bar next to the distillery.

Location: 113 Sunset Blvd SW, Turner Valley

Romero Distilling Co.

It’s rare to find rum distilleries in these parts since sugar cane isn’t grown in Alberta (or anywhere in Canada), but Romero Distilling Co.  keeps its local flair by tying its luxury rum to the story of Alberta’s Prohibition-era rum runners. Hear the story of bootlegger Emilio Picariello on a tour of the distillery, complete with archival photos and dramatic flourishes. The rum here, made with Canadian molasses, is rich and perfect for sipping neat, but you’d be missing out of you skipped out on one of the tasting room’s expertly prepared cocktails, made with local ingredients and designed to pay homage to Emilio and his crew.

Location: 688 Heritage Dr SE Unit 300

Skunkworks Distillery

While whisky is the gold standard for many craft distilleries, Skunkworks Distillery  takes a different approach, focusing on what it calls “the smoothest moonshine on any known planet.” Take a sip and you won’t believe that this premium moonshine is made from sugar beets, grown in Taber, Alberta. The Manchester tasting room is also a cool place to hang out in, with an eclectic vibe and an onsite music studio. More importantly, you’ll have a chance to truly appreciate an often-misunderstood spirit by sampling Skunkworks’ flagship moonshine, either straight-up or in flavours like orange, hibiscus, or lime.

Location: 4009 4 St SE

Starr Distilling

Starr Distilling  rebranded itself as a new distillery the spring of 2022, but its signature Love Summer vodkas have been on the market since 2016. Available in flavours like peach and raspberry, the eye-catching bottles have long been local favourites and are perfect in a fresh and fruity cocktail or as a flavour enhancer for sparkling wine. Try them out for yourself at Starr’s luxe tasting room, alongside the distillery’s menu of upscale comfort food.

Location: 4127 6 St NE #15

Two Rivers Distillery

Inspired by the pristine waters of the Bow and Elbow rivers, Two Rivers Distillery  is all about clean and clear vodkas and gins, with some whimsical flavours thrown in to keep things interesting. Step into the tasting room and you’ll find European-themed décor, but the spirits are pure Alberta, taking advantage of the province’s bounty of barley. The signature 1875 Vodka named after the year Calgary was founded is a must, but you’ll also want to try the hibiscus flavoured Cockscomb gin and Spirit of the Gardener hybrid spirit made in collaboration with Calgary’s Village Brewery. Oddball flavours like jalapeno dill pickle vodka are best enjoyed in a cocktail and the tasting room has a long list of concoctions to deliver the full Two Rivers experience.

Location: 453 42 Ave SE

Eau Claire Distillery's tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Eau Claire Distillery’s tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Many people flock to the West Coast to appreciate the newest brewpubs and distillers but in recent years, southern Alberta’s craft scene has become infinitely more interesting. For people wanting the craft experience closer to home, here are a few worthy destinations complete with tours and tastings for some added education.

Big Rock Brewery

This Calgary-based brewery is best known for its staple beers like Grasshopper and Traditional Ale but don’t overlook the rest of the Signature Series – including the Dunkelweizen and the Rhine Stone Cowboy Klsch Style Ale.  After all, Big Rock was one of the first breweries to make craft beer a “thing” in Alberta.

Tours: Tours typically last for 60 minutes every weekend and cost $25 per person.

Location: The brewery is in southeast Calgary just off 52 St. at 5555 76 Ave. S.E.

bigrockbeer.com

Eau Claire Distillery

Eau Claire Distillery has set up shop in the historic Turner Valley Theatre and the tours here are well worth the drive. The distillery has embraced what they call a “farm-to-glass” philosophy using Alberta grains and ingredients from the nearby Sheep River.

Tastings:  The tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Private tours can be arranged.

Location:  60 kilometres southwest of Calgary in Turner Valley’s old movie theatre.

The Grizzly Paw

After a long day of hiking and adventuring, nothing tastes better than a beer at this Canmore establishment. Made with glacier-fed water, The Grizzly Paw brews mountain fresh beers that always guarantee to quench one’s thirst. First timers should definitely sample the Powder Hound Pilsner and Grumpy Beer Honey Wheat. This fall, the brewery is launching a distillery program.

Tours: 45 to 60 minute tours run every weekend. Admission is $15. Call ahead for private tours.

Location: The 20,000 square foot facility is at 310 Old Canmore Rd. in Canmore.

Park Distillery

Welcome to Park Distillery and Restaurant: Banff’s newest place to eat, drink and play. Tour the restaurant, take in the distilling process alongside master distiller Matt Hendricks and stay for a spirits tasting afterwards. Did we mention the spirits pair perfectly with the campfire-inspired menu? And,  P ark’s retail shop will soon have an assortment of in-house vodka, gin and whisky for purchase.

Tours:  Daily tours at 3:30 p.m. start in July. Tastings are $20.

Location: Right in the heart of Banff at 219 Banff Avenue.

Village Brewery

With aspirations to make community-minded ale, Village not only uses Alberta grains and barley, it also uses hops sourced from the neighbourhood of Bridgeland. These beers are ubiquitous within Calgary and are always a welcome addition to any outdoor city event.

Tours: One-hour tours run every Saturday and cost $15 per person.

Location:  The Brewery is in Manchester at 5000 12A St. S.E.

Wild Rose Brewery

Stopping for a meal or a drink at the Currie Barack’s brewpub is a popular thing to do in Calgary. However, to get the full experience, try the Beer 101 where your host will cover the brewery’s history, handy tasting tips and let you sample the classics like the Velvet Fog and WRaspberry Ale.

Tastings: Beer 101 tastings are $29 per person and start at 1 p.m. on Sundays. Reservations are required.

Location:  The tap room is still in an airport hangar in Currie Barracks at 4580 Quesnay Wood Dr. S.W.

Where Quality and Efficiency is the Tradition

Jamaican rum continues to be recognized throughout the world as distinctively flavourful and a top quality rum. This does not happen by accident!

Deep in the heart of Lluidas Vale sits The Worthy Park Estate. Protected by the surrounding mountain ranges and encompassed by lush and fertile terrain. In the acres and acres of sugar cane fields is where it all begins.

The cane fields were designed with careful consideration to not only the varieties of sugar cane growing in the fields, but to the planting and drainage, soil type and the method of harvesting the field.

Following the tradition of sugar cane cultivation that has continued unabated at Worthy Park since 1720, the first ever record of rum production was in 1741, years before any other existing distillery in Jamaica.

The molasses used in our rum production is extracted in our on-property sugar factory; a sugar factory that has maintained its rank as the most efficient in Jamaica every year since 1968.

With the completion of a state-of-the-art distillery in 2005, Worthy Park was back in the rum business. Being the newest distillery, it was built with efficiency in mind and designed to maintain the highest level of quality.

From the water used in blending, to the propriety native yeast cultivated from our own sugar cane crop, each step in the distillation process is measured and evaluated to ensure consistency and quality.

We distill our rums in the traditional Jamaican Pot- Still method to give you a heavy bodied rum full of esters and congeners. The 100% copper Pot-Still was made by Forsyths, the industry leader in Pot-Still manufacturing from Scotland.

RUM SAFARI IS A KAUAI MUST-DO!

★★★★★ Add the Rum Safari NOW to your Kauai to-do list — especially if you love cocktails! Our hosts Tiny & Rex were hands-down two of the best tour guides of any adventure we have ever had. They were hilarious, welcoming, and so knowledgeable. Our family participated in the Rum Safari. We loved cruising through the plantation in a jeep-like truck with multiple rows (it was covered to shade from the sun), meeting the farm animals, learning about the history of hawaii & the plants, and of course, tasting Koloa rum and sipping hand-crafted farm-to-glass cocktails they whipped up in front of us using fruits from the plantation itself. We were taken to a beautiful jungle setting and also a gazebo on the plantation to sample, sip, and enjoy ourselves. We went with our adult family of 7. Buy tickets in advance in order to reserve the day & time you want. A MUST-DO!!! - Avery J. | Tripadvisor

KAUAI RUM TOUR!!

★★★★★ This tour was a great way not only to experience the plantation, but taste some incredible rum and have two cocktails to boot! This was a fun thing to do with our adult kids. The guides were funny and great at putting together great drinks. The two stops were beautiful places to sample rum and look around at the gorgeous area.. We loved seeing the pigs running towards us when they saw the tortillas coming at them, and the goats were so cute too. I think we will end up doing this tour again. It was a ton of fun! - Marla J. | Tripadvisor

RUM SAFARI - A HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP

★★★★★ This was incredibly fun! It was really cool to get to see all the plants and animals (especially the pigs) at Kilohana Plantation, and I was impressed by how knowledgeable our guides, Tiny and Courtney, were (and also how friendly and hilarious). The farm-to-table cocktails were the best we had on the island, thanks to the super fresh ingredients and the Koloa Rum, which was really good. This ended up being the sleeper hit of activities we did on Kauai and definitely one of our favorite experiences for our whole HI trip. I highly recommend it! - Rebecca | Tripadvisor

AMAZING TIME AT KAUAI SAFARIS RUM TOUR

★★★★★ Had an amazing time on the Kauai Safaris Rum tour! Our tour was led by Fletchre and Tiny - they were super engaging, informative, and just made the tour an overall blast. We experienced a tour through a beautiful plantation and learned all about the crops being grown and interacted with farm animals as well. The best part of course was trying different rums, and our guides concocted what could have been the best cocktail I've ever had! This was one of our favorite tours throughout our entire stay in Hawaii and I highly recommend it as a must-do. Thank you Fletcher and Tiny!!! - Glen K. | Tripadvisor

KAUAI ISLAND'S ONLY

Rum safari tour.

We’ll continue the adventure by visiting new sites of the 105 acre plantation. Kilohana is home to over 70 wild pigs who you’ll be able to feed and interact with on the way to the next tasting. At the reflective pond, we’ll head into our Loi Lanai with a luscious backdrop to enjoy the next cocktail. For this tasting, we use local fruits and herbs directly from the plantation to mix a delicious farm to glass cocktail. Before we head back to the starting point, enjoy time with new friends over some of the freshest cocktails on the island with a rum safari in Kauai!

You’ve made it to Alberta’s biggest city as a part of your road trip – now park your car and let someone else drive you around to explore the best breweries in Calgary!

Calgary Craft Breweries Feature Image

Alberta has seen a massive boom in craft breweries , going from 27 in 2015 to over 120 in 2020. And in recent years, the Calgary craft brewery scene has especially seen exceptional growth. The city also has its share of fun cocktail joints, but the craft beer scene is now worth a special mention as the number of small-batch brewers and self-proclaimed “beer aficionados” has soared. In turn, people are trading in their tired old six-packs for something more interesting in flavour profile, name, and even the expressive artwork adorns the cans.

A wealth of excellent breweries have cropped up throughout the city, offering a variety of tasty hops and suds, each unique in its process, ingredients, and naming conventions. So while you’re here, you owe it to yourself to check out these top breweries in Calgary.

Citizen Brewing Company

Almost hidden off of Edmonton Trail, Citizen Brewing Company has built a solid reputation amongst Calgarians (and Albertans). Their mission “to make beers that they themselves want to drink and that they are intensely proud of” is a proven success. Don’t forget to try the Hijacked IPA, the name commemorating the time their food truck was literally stolen, or the Belma and Louise, a NEPA packed with many Belma hops.

Tall cans of Hijacked IPA from Citizen Brewing Company

Stop by their patio and have a pint or grab a few cans, but if you have the time, be sure to grab a bite because their food is damn good too. Citizen is open seven days a week, and the patio is dog friendly.

Cold Garden Beverage Company

Cold Garden is a somewhat niche microbrewery located in the Inglewood neighbourhood of Calgary. Founders Blake Belding, Kris Fiorentino, and Dan Allard set up shop there with the intention of revitalizing the area, as it was once Calgary’s center for all things beer. As a result, this is one brewery in Calgary that it pays to visit, especially if you want a creative beer that you won’t find anywhere else.

A beer flight from Cold Garden Brewing

Some of Cold Garden’s brews include Cakeface , a Marzen lager made with vanilla beans that actually tastes like a birthday cake. Also, don’t miss the Red Smashed , an Irish Red Ale made with malted and roasted barley, caramel, and some English hops. The taproom is open for tours seven days a week.

Common Crown Brewing Co.

If you’re looking for a spot to converse over drinks after work one day or take the visiting family, one of the breweries in Calgary that you absolutely cannot afford to miss is the Common Crown Brewing Co. Common Crown bills itself as devoted to “Crafting Beer for Good Times and Great Conversations,” making it a great place to chill, drink and socialize.

Core beers include its crisp and light Blonde Ale , its bold and malty Brown Ale and its citrusy and mango-flavoured Journeyman IPA .

Village Brewery

“It takes a village to raise a beer, and beer to raise a village,” says this tagline for one of Calgary’s most popular breweries. Village Brewery boasts Calgary’s only interior rooftop bar complete with sweeping vistas of Alberta’s foothills, and inside, you can peek into the Farmer’s Market directly below. There is a strong sense of community here, so enjoy your time and grab a growler or two on the way out. Don’t forget to try our favourite: Village Squeeze .

Tool Shed Brewing Company

The Tool Shed Brewing Company was literally born in a backyard tool shed. The brainchild of self-described “high-level geek” Graham Sherman and his partner – are two guys with a penchant for obsessing over their hobbies and an intense love of good beer. Their obsessive qualities drove the two men to turn Tool Shed into a phenomenon.

Some of the brewery’s mainstays include its Flat Cap Stout and Red Rage Ale , touted as “the ONE thing Chuck Norris fears!” The brewery opens its taproom to the public seven days a week so that people might see how the guys do their work. Tours and tasting sessions are held every Saturday at noon and cost as little as $15.

Prairie Dog Brewing

Prairie Dog Brewing is a craft microbrewery doubling as a barbecue restaurant whose tagline neatly sums up what they’re all about: “Beer, Barbecue, Friends.” While their beer is exceptional, with a kitchen run by a Red-Seal certified executive chef, their menu is nothing to scoff at either. Offering Texas-style BBQ with slow-roasted and smoked meats prepared in Clifford , their big red pit/smoker, almost everything on the menu is prepared from scratch using high-quality local ingredients.

Prairie Dog Beer

With regulars like their dark Uncle Eddie’s Oatmeal Stout and their Gunnison’s Red Ale , their beer selection pairs perfectly with the mouthwatering BBQ offerings. The family-owned establishment even solicits Albertan artists to help design their beer labels and cans.

The Dandy Brewing Company

What do you get when you combine a chef, a chemist, a teacher and a liquor business veteran, and an idea to make the best beer in Alberta? The Dandy Brewing Company – one of Calgary’s most innovative craft breweries, creates some of the most thoughtful ales and unique sours we’ve ever tried.

A tall can of The Dandy Sour from The Dandy Brewing Company

Their mission was to create exciting beer styles with quality ingredients, and they’ve certainly achieved this. The Dandy Brewing Company has earned many accolades, including one of Canada’s “ most notable brewery in 2019 ”. What was once touted “the original little brewery” in Calgary has grown into one of the most popular craft breweries in town.

Eighty-Eight Brewing

This company has captured Calgarians by tugging on the heartstrings of nostalgia and the spirit of the 1988 Olympics that took place in Calgary. Eighty-Eight Brewing is a vibrant little hole-in-the-wall in Inglewood. In addition to its many well-crafted and high-quality beers, it conveniently has a pizza parlour located right upstairs, making it one of the breweries in Calgary that should definitely be on your list of stops.

A pint of NEPA from Eighty-Eight Brewing Calgary.

As for the beers themselves, Eighty-Eight can treat you with stouts like Good Morning and the Easy Bake , a cool Tropical IPA called the Wave Pool, and a wonderful rosé Saison called Tiffany .

Annex Ale Project

Founded in 2015 by co-owners Andrew Bullied and Erica O’Gorman is Annex Ale Project . The brewery is located in the Manchester neighbourhood of Calgary and frequently experiments with products and creations. Next to their brewery is their tasting room, and they invite their guests to enjoy a pint or a flight to sample their many different beers, ciders and even craft sodas.

Hold my beer

At the core, the Annex Ale Project is a social humanist committed to making award-winning beer. Annex produces four year-round beers and will have a variety of experimental and seasonal beers ready for their patrons.

Don’t miss trying the Force Majeure, a hoppy NEIPA with notes of mango, passion fruit and pine resin.

Cabin Brewing Company

Relax. Take a deep breath. Drink great beer . This is what Cabin Brewing is all about.

They claim not to have any mind-blowing superhero powers. But after trying their core beers (RETROSPECTRUM, Super Saturation and Sunshine Rain), you could swear they do! They really love making beer, and it shows. They live it, drink it, love it and make it for the world to taste.

The taproom at Cabin Brewing Calgary

Visit their family-friendly taproom (yes, that is a canoe chandelier), have a pint on their sunny patio and if you’re hungry, grab one of their Kiwi-style pies (voted as one of the best things to eat in Calgary).

The Establishment Brewing Company

Awarded 2021 Alberta Brewery of the Year and 2021 Canadian Brewery of the Year, The Establishment Brewing Company is making waves (well, waves of beer) in Calgary. It’s safe to say that Mike Foniok, the founder, who has over 100 Canadian beer awards, is passionate about beer. The brewery and taproom is located in Calgary’s Manchester district, and their goal is simple: “the proliferation of friendship through sharing stories and music over a beer.”

Jam Rock, a blackberry sour with Vanilla from The Establishment Brewing Company

Their technique is inspired by “old world technique and new world style,” which is advantageous for developing sours and one of our favourites, Jam Rock, a Blackberry Sour with Vanilla.
