Overall, the tour experience was amazing! However, some of the hotels were not convenient and/or were not in the safest neighborhoods! Also, on most of the included excursions, the restaurants were not what I expected! I expected better food, and restaurants that locals would go!
This was my husband's and my first bus tour. Luke was immediately warm and welcoming to all of us participating on the tour. He made every stop come alive with his comprehensive knowledge of the history associated with the area. We were astonished several times at how much he knew about several of the stops. Additionally, he was funny and made everyone laugh. I don't believe we would have enjoyed the tour near as much with a different guide. He was organized and kept us up to date on what was in store each day.

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,619 reviews for Europe tours
This trip was truly a trip of a lifetime. When venturing to 7 countries in 9 days time was very limited; however, our tour guide (Emily McGuire) excelled in choosing activities that best represented each countries culture, as well as activities that made the trip more magical and memorable for everyone. Contiki not only allowed me to obtain a real taste and love of every country in Europe, but it also allowed me to make new friends from all over the world, which I believe may have been the best part! I highly recommend this trip to anyone seeking to travel to new places and make life lasting memories!
Rianna was an excellent trip manager, sharing her knowledge and secret gems with us as we travelled around Scandinavia. She went above and beyond to make sure everyone in the group was having fun, hosting games/ activities to bring the group together, always taking photos and videos for us so we can remember the trip forever. She managed to do this whilst keeping everyone well informed about our schedule, meeting times and locations. Thanks again Rianna for the lifelong memories, as our trip wouldn’t have been the same without you. Cheers Jordan

Tour was very enjoyable and went according to time and the sights visited were intriguing.
Overall it was a good tour. Hotels were very good - excellent for some. No complaints at all for the hotels. Tour guides were also very good. One guide in particular, Rosio, was exceptional, and did a great job not only giving us useful information about the places we visited, but also was very good at managing a large group. No tour is perfect, as we wish we could have spent more time in some places, less in others, but again - no tour is perfect. We had a decent balance of free time and tour time.

such a fantastic trip, great communication and very helpful with transportation. they even helped with transportation for us arriving early and leaving late from a different city. great great company. good job!!!!
Tour radar was excellent to work with! We had a large group of 12 adults, they did their very best to keep us all together. They arranged all the ferries to each island, transportation to and from the airport. Our hotels were all very nice, especially the location of Athens and Santorini. We would have like to have been more in town when in Mykonos. Highly recommend! We can’t wait to book our next adventure

Perfect getaway for anyone in need of a good rest and quality time with their partner. We loved every moment. Amazing tuk-tuk ride, easy bag transfers. Exquisite wine tasting with two course meal. The hotel in Tuscany with the room walking out onto one of the pools- amazing. Fantastic restaurant on site! Our SPA session was relaxing with a beautiful dinner (spectacular view) afterwards. Walking distance from medieval town. The tour guides were great, high energy, friendly and welcoming. I’m so glad I booked this as our Tuscany experience.
My sister and I did the Mama Mia Tour throughout Italy May 27-June 8. Each one of our tour guides was amazing, we had Carlo and Max in Rome, Giovanni in Sorrento, and Nedas in Florence and Venice. All of them were so fun to tour with, always happy to take our picture and since the groups were smaller we could be a bit more customizable with our experience and what we wanted to see during walking tours of the city! The guides were probably one of my favorite parts of the trip because after spending so much time with them they began to feel like more of a friend than a tour guide which was awesome! I really enjoyed the welcome dinners as well to help break the ice with fellow travelers and get to know the guides better. They all were very funny and knowledgeable of the location we were at and happy to provide food/activity recommendations for our free time. The only critique I would give the company is we were often not meeting our guides at the accommodation, we were asked to meet them somewhere in the city whether that was a train station or a specific street in the city. Being in a city I had never been to before this was a little difficult at first, especially when the meeting point was far away. I wish they would put us in direct contact with who we are meeting so we can message them if we are lost or running late, and who we should be looking for. With that being said, we had a couple times where we arrived at the meeting point and nobody came or came much later once I called the company a few times, which I think could have been resolved if we were just given the contact of who we were meeting from the beginning or making a WhatsApp group chat of some sort for the group to send updates and communicate better. But after one incident of a meeting point mix up the company was very accommodating in helping us the rest of the trip and adding a gondola ride in Venice for us to make up for a hiccup in Rome. Overall I would recommend this trip to other fellow travelers! You see such amazing things with amazing tour guides and I would do it again and again!

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,930 reviews for Europe tours
Greg is passionate and professional. There's great energy and positive vibes throughout the tour. He is always appreciative about his co-partners such as coach captain, local specialist. He always surprises us with daily treats on our seats and lively music. Thank you Trafalgar for giving us good memories.
Greg is amazing! He has such good energy about him and is funny too. He is knowledgeable and patient, which are 2 very important things for a tour guide. I recommend him as a top notch tour guide!

Costsaver

  • Excellent - 913 reviews for Europe tours
I was really looking forward to our family trip to Scotland. Unfortunately, Majestic Scotland tour by Costsaver was a total disappointment, it was basically a bus ride and hotels accommodations. There was very little comments about the places we passed on the way from tour director (who was also a guide everywhere except Edinburgh). Unfortunately, there was not even audio guide (that is listed in advertisement). I have a strong feeling that stops on the way were planed not by how interesting the place are but rather by availability of free bathrooms. Trip to Isle of Skye that I was really looking forward to was a joke - first we were on the road for several hours just to have lunch at the visitor center, 30 min bus ride on the isle at the places that have not looked spectacular in any way and returned to mainland by ferry. Totally not worse the hassle to be on the bus for 4-5 hours with barely any comments on the way. List of optional experiences was very poor, mainly very overpriced dinners in Glasgow and Edinburg. There was no schedule of when we will arrive at the particular place and how long we will have there, so that we could not plan our experiences ahead of time ourselves. It is a pity we could not enjoy such a beautiful place as Scotland to its full potential. Hotel in Edinburgh was far away from the center with literally only one restaurant in the walking distance.
We’ll planned and we’ll informed once on the trip

Good service and reasonable price
The itinerary was falsely advertised, we did not go to every island that was advertised, we had very minimal time in each destination to explore, and the age gap was falsely advertised having people about 40 when it should’ve been ages 18-35. Would not recommend this sail

All my expectations were met.

Dimensione Sicilia - Dimsi Incoming Operator Srl

Dimensione Sicilia - Dimsi …

  • Excellent - 155 reviews for Europe tours
Better than expected. Mostly because of our tour guide Angelo who was so informative and knowledgeable. Very accommodating.
It was very well organized, Placido was a great guide and I enjoyed it. The pace was just right, and the itinerary was good. The only thing I found misleading was the extra charges for some activities, entrance fees and city taxes. It would be better if they were all listed as additional fees, apx 150 EUR extra per person.

G Adventures

G Adventures

  • Excellent - 19,205 reviews for Europe tours
Our guide, Francesco, was amazing!!!!
This was one of the most amazing trips I have ever been on, it is an active sailing trip, you will learn all about how to sail all while see some of the most hidden coves and islands of Greece that are only accessible by boat. Our Skipper Mack was amazing. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for an adventure!

Globus

  • Excellent - 74,904 reviews for Europe tours
Excellent trip it delivered what we were expecting, and more.
This was the worst tour I have ever been on. The tour director was misogynistic, ill informed and extremely rude. He made the tour pure agony. There were a lot of public holidays in the tour and everything was closed. Globus did not want to know about any of our concerns.

Choose Balkans

Great tour guide , good accommodation , careful driver , enough free time , informed guide , nice small group
What an amazing experience we had on this adventure! It was a perfect mix of guided experiences and free time to explore each place at your own pace. We saw a lot in 4 days, the drives never felt too long, we were very comfortable and the views were beautiful. The hotels were located very centrally and all within walking distance from the must-see areas. The communication before, during and after the tour was perfect. We learned so much about the area and would want to go back! Thank you to Choose Balkans and our guide Ilir!

Greg Colgin was our travel director and made the trip memorable. He is knowledgeable, caring, extremely organized, and concerned about our wellbeing. He made the trip fun with his little extras. The itinerary was good. We saw a lot in the amount of time we had.
Greg was positive, knowledgeable, fun, and very organized. He provided creativity, kept our time as very fun and informative. Wanted to make sure he was available to answer questions and to meet everybody’s needs.

5 Top Tour Operators to Book on Your Next Trip to Europe

Keep the trip-planning process hassle-free with top-rated tour operators across the pond.

A reputable tour operator can help minimize headaches and maximize value.

Europe offers a treasure trove of museums, archeological sites and historic monuments. But, unless you're an art historian or medieval scholar, in order to fully appreciate these cherished attractions – and make the most of your limited vacation time – you'll want to book day tours with local tour operators. Reserving tours with a reputable tour company can ensure a richer (and more stress-free) experience, especially when traveling with kids in tow. Plus, booking reservations with a trusted guide far in advance can not only ensure availability but can also help you secure discounts and maximize savings. Here's who to go with on your next trip across the pond.

Fat Tire Tours

This English-speaking, British-headquartered tour operator has branches in Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and London, and offers 'skip the line' tours for major tourist attractions as well as unique city tours by bike. Opting for the latter and exploring iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower  and the Tuileries Gardens from behind handlebars holds more appeal for kids than walking and makes for a more memorable and pleasant experience. Apart from benefitting from a knowledgeable guide as you navigate the city by bike, you'll also have the added element of keeping teens and preteens enthralled. Book a Fat Tire Tour online in advance of your trip, as the operator is very popular, but also look for deals offered by the company after your tour. There are often discounts available for booking second tours, and given the variety of offerings in each city, families could easily spend another day exploring with the Fat Tire crew.

Overome

Focused solely on the Eternal City , Overome is a highly specialized tour company that offers small group and private tours at major Roman sites, such as the Vatican and Colosseum. While Overome primarily covers the can't-miss points of interest across Rome, their greatest strength lies in their tour guides. Their reputable guides are known for their enthusiasm and friendly demeanors, which help make it easy for families to unwind and enjoy in-depth tours of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, without hordes of tourists at their side during prime visiting seasons. In a city known for crushing crowds at tourist attractions, having a guided tour with a small group can easily transform your trip from stressful and hassle-prone to headache-free.

Viator tours are offered in multiple countries across Europe and beyond, making this tour company the most expansive on this list. Travelers booking a tour through Viator can look forward to a range of offerings from daytrips from Paris to Normandy or Mont Saint-Michel to tours of Belgian Christmas markets to walks through Turkish bazaars . How does Viator offer such an extensive list of tours? They act as a middleman, pairing travelers in need of tours with local tour operations in European cities. First, travelers book the tour of their choice through Viator. Then, a subsequent email confirmation lists the local meeting point for the tour and includes information on the local tour company used. While Viator users do have to deal with two companies rather than one, they can count on the process to be streamlined and user-friendly. Best of all, Viator rigorously vets their local operators, so travelers don't have to worry about whether they're in good hands.

Walks of Italy

With tours offered in Venice, Rome, Florence, Pompeii, Tuscany, Milan and the Almalfi Coast, Walks of Italy is a standout pick for specialty tours across Italy. The company is known to tap visitors into the local culture with treks to off-the-beaten-path sites and hidden gems across the country. In other words, after you've seen the major landmarks, or think you know all there is to know about an Italian destination, take a Walks of Italy tour to discover lesser-known places. Their Rome as a Local Tour takes visitors across the city and into the suburbs to hit all the attractions guidebooks tend to gloss over, from chariot tracks on the Appian Way to aqueducts to the secret keyhole to St. Peter's Basilica. As your Walks of Italy tour guide takes you to less-trodden local points of interest, you're bound to feel more like an insider than a tourist.

Brit Movie Tours

Offering a fun way to explore London and the United Kingdom, Brit Movie Tours specializes – as you may have guessed – in movie locations for fans of series shown on both the big and small screen. Families will be most interested in their Harry Potter tour, which takes fans across the capital for three hours via motor coach to locations such as Kings Cross station and 12 Grimmauld Place, but there are also tours for fans of Doctor Who, the Beatles, Sherlock and more. Tours range in size, so look closely at tour descriptions. Also, consider private tours if a top priority is exploring top locations without heavy crowds.

Before You Book

All the tour operators on this list specialize in half-day and full-day tours in major European cities and all companies offer both small and large group tour sizes, ranging in price from approximately 30-200 euros per person. When possible, book your reservations in advance and opt for a small group size of 10 or fewer participants for the most value.

Travelers enthusiastically returned to its countryside and waterfront properties. In fact, six of the places on this list are hotels around Lake Como and on the Amalfi Coast.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

What do the Italian properties on the list bring to the table? "A beautiful escape from reality," a voter wrote of No. 10 Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como. "I truly felt transported and the most relaxed in my life." Another fan called it "my favorite hotel on the planet." Also on Lake Como, No. 13 Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni has incredible "views both from and of the property," according to one T+L reader.

Santorini, the volcanic gem in the southern Aegean Sea, nabbed three of Greece's four spots this year, while France snagged two spots with Coquillade Provence Resort & Spa (No. 4) and Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa (No. 5). The former is a magical hilltop resort inside Luberon Regional Nature Park, with stunning views of the region of Provence, while the latter is the only luxury hotel in the beloved Champagne wine region.

Below, find out which other resorts readers chose as the best resorts in Europe.

1. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, Montalcino, Italy

While nearly all of the other Italian properties on the list are on Lake Como or the Amalfi Coast, this centuries-old Tuscan estate snagged the top prize, with a near-perfect score to boot. Its guests have maximum privacy — the 5,000-acre property has just 42 suites and 11 villas — and find it hard to get bored: They can visit the Brunello di Montalcino winery or play the rolling 18-hole golf course or have a treatment at the lush spa in the estate's former wine cellars or relax by a heated infinity pool with striking views of the countryside. Culinary offerings include two excellent restaurants, a cooking school, and a charming kitchen garden — plus a truffle-hunting excursion. Rooms are lavish, and service is impeccable, ensuring that any countryside-vacation dreams will come true.

Top Eurostar Destinations from London

Top Cities and a Suggested Itinerary for Northern Europe

star travel europe

Eurostar is the high-speed rail link connecting London to Paris, Brussels and beyond. The convenient city center train stations mean that travel time is far shorter than by plane, when you consider check-in times, getting your luggage and transferring from the airports). In fact, Eurostar carries more passengers than all of the airlines combined on both routes out of London.

Why Take the Eurostar?

London is usually the shortest path from the U.S. to a major airport in Europe, and often the most inexpensive choice for non-stop flights. It's natural to start your vacation in London, and when you're through visiting, Eurostar is right there at St Pancras station—and Paris just over two hours away. If you only have a short time to see Europe and want to see some of  Europe's Best Cities , Eurostar is a fast, convenient way to tour London, Paris, and cities in bordering countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The fastest London to Paris trains take just over two hours, while the London to Brussels journey is exactly two hours long. Other travel times are listed with the relevant city, below.

And if you're tempted by Business Premier Class, you'll also get fast-lane check-in, four-course lunch or dinner service with wine and a free taxi service from your arrival point to any city destination

Suggested Itinerary

Starts in London (for as many days as you can afford), for either Lille (one day) or Paris (again, as long as you can afford) on the Eurostar. Alternatively, skip both and head straight to Brussels (two days). From there a loop takes you to Amsterdam (three days) through Antwerp (one day), then on to Cologne (one day). From Cologne, you can return to Brussels or Lille in anticipation of the return trip on the Eurostar.

Paris, France

The classic Eurostar route. It takes just over two hours to get between two of Europe's greatest cities, meaning it's possible to visit Paris as a Day Trip from London !

Europe 3-Star Traveler Index for 2024: 54 cities from cheap to expensive

Back a little later than usual this year, the 2024 Europe 3-star traveler index has been fully updated to reflect the busy summer season ahead. Our Backpacker Index is a similar list that sorts Europe’s top destinations by price for those staying in hostels, and the list below ranks the same cities for travelers on more of a 3-star budget.

In the years since the last update there has been notable inflation in most Europe and prices for tourists are up nearly everywhere as well. We dropped St. Petersburg and Moscow from the list partly because almost no one would visit them in 2024, and also because the travel companies aren’t listing hotels there anymore.

Budget travelers will still find a lot of good news on the list below since so many of Europe’s most interesting cities including Krakow, Budapest, and Prague, are all MUCH cheaper than any city in the US or Canada. Hotel prices for 2024 have been quite volatile and some cities have gone way up or down the list just because hotel prices have changed dramatically, even if most other things are similar to the previous year.

Are you a hostel person rather than a hotel person?

If you prefer hostel dorm beds to private hotel rooms then check the  Europe Backpackers Index , which is aimed at budget travelers. The rankings are also quite different in some cases, as cheap dorms are available in some cities where hotel rooms aren’t quite so cheap.

Price of travel

How the 3-Star Traveler Index works

We take a fixed set of typical expenses that every traveler will encounter, and apply them to each of the 54 major European tourist cities.

Note :  The 3-star Traveler Index is based on two people sharing hotel rooms and taxis.

Costs for each city

  • One night in the cheapest 3-star hotel available with a desirable central location and mostly positive reviews. Hotel prices are per person based on double occupancy, so the full nightly rate is double what is listed for each city here.
  • Two 3-kilometer taxi rides per day (one ride paid per person)
  • One cultural attraction, such as a popular museum, per day
  • Three meals per day using the top end of the range of our “budget meals” for each city
  • Three beers (or wine) each day as an “entertainment fund.” Non-drinkers might have dessert and coffee or attend a local music performance instead, so this is a general benchmark that should be proportional for each city.

Notes on the above data

The hotel prices listed above are for stays in mid September, which is shoulder season in most of Europe. During July and August, most cities will be more expensive as well as more crowded.

For the food and drink prices we took the top-end of our estimates for “budget breakfasts” and so forth. This should allow for plenty of flexibility in choosing dining options in each city, but it does not account for Michelin-star restaurants, as this is a 3-star index rather than a  luxury index . The prices for high-end restaurants vary far too much to be meaningful here, so we chose a reasonable and lower standard, that should allow for meals and drinks in hotel restaurants and bars, rather than at the cheapest places in town.

How to use the 3-Star Traveler Index information

The purpose of this index is to get a general sense of typical traveler costs in each city in Europe. As you can see, the cheapest city is over four times cheaper than the most expensive, so this information can help travelers choose destinations on based partly on how far their budget will go in each city.

The hotels chosen for this comparison are all of reasonably high 3-star standards and with good central locations. In many cities you can save a fair amount of money by staying in a 2-star hotel or staying farther from the city center.

Shopping, whether for souvenirs or clothing, is not included in these totals. Generally, souvenir prices will be proportional to the overall index price, but name-brand clothing tends to vary far less from one city to another.

You could use the main index price as a good indicator of a daily budget, per person, for each city, though obviously there are many ways to save or spend more wherever you go.

Hi Roger, what a find your site is, thank you!

I thought I posted thiis inquiry already on your site but I can’t find it now.

I’m planning a 12 week trip from Australia to Europe in 2020 , July- Oct.

I want to start in Dublin Ireland to see family & sight see the south, Approx 10 days. Then UK , including Scotland & Wales similar Approx 13 days.

I was looking at getting a Interail Global Pass ( UK citizen- if that’s still relevant!?), possibly over 2 months??

Next , across to France to see the Burgers of Calais, ( a lot of my trip will be around Art, particularly Post Impressionist).

I was thinking from here to go to Amsterdam for 4 days, then Interlaken for 3. Then back to France, Champagne for a friend’s 44th ish! ( Compulsory, last week of August.)

From here I thought on to Berlin 3 days, Prague 2 days, Vienna 2 days, Budapest 3 days, Athens 3 days & Greek Islands 3 days? Next Italy, Rome 3 days, Florence 4 days, Veinice 1 day.

Then back to France to do the Riveira where my favourite artists painted, 5 days.

Lastly fly or train ? back to London, possibly hop back to Dublin, 6 days. Fly home to Australia.

I have a friend that will join me for 2 weeks, probably in the east of Europe. Any advice at all is greatly appreciated,

Many thanks, Anne-Marie

Anne Marie,

You put this same question under an article about Key West, so this is a better place for it and I’ll try to help.

Your plan sounds fantastic. The only thing that stands out to me is that it’s going to be more efficient to go from the UK to Amsterdam and then down to Paris or Interlaken and then the other. Amsterdam is easy to reach from London on the Eurostar train or by a short flight if from other than London. It will save you a lot of time going the length of Germany, which isn’t as scenic as it could be.

I also usually recommend staying 3 nights in almost any European city you visit, even if you are in a hurry. It’s hard to do much sightseeing on arrival or departure day, so a 2-night stay is really one day of sightseeing sandwiched between two travel days.

As for an Interrail Pass (same as a Eurail Pass except for European citizens), you can see my longer advice on getting Eurail Passes . Typically I recommend against getting those rail passes these days, but an exception would be a really long trip like this one where you are unsure of your full itinerary. In other words, a rail pass for 2 weeks is kind of expensive and hard to get great value out of, but the 2-month passes are quite cheap on a per-day basis and as long as you’ll be using it 2 or 3 times per week, even for day trips, it’s usually a great deal.

I’m glad you are planning on seeing Ireland outside of Dublin because I feel that the magic of Ireland is in the countryside and smaller towns.

In general it’s FAR more enjoyable to take trains compared to flying, mostly because the trains leave and arrive in the city centers and you can literally arrive at the train station 5 or 10 minutes before departure and you’ll make it. Flying around Europe usually means taking a one-hour bus or train ride out to the airport to arrive 2 hours before departure and all of that same unpleasantness. That said, due to the train routes, it’s probably best to fly into Athens and then fly or take ferries to the islands. The rest of your route should be ideal by train, and that Interrail Pass will be an amazing way to do it.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions. I’m sure it’ll be the trip of a lifetime. -Roger

hey Roger, my partner and I are returning to Ireland from Australia for a month in August. we will be traveling to Budapest for a weekend to party for a friends bday and are thinking of making a trip of it i.e. flying out a week earlier ton see more of Europe. Could you recommend some maybe 2 or 3 places that would be good for maybe 2 days each before heading on to Budapest.?? We also have 3 days after the bday weekend before we fly back to Aus from Budapest. should we stay in Budapest for those days to actually explore or would that be too much time there?? Thanks Ivan

One slightly challenging thing about stringing together other places from Budapest is that the trains in that part of Europe still run fairly slow, so it takes 6 or more hours to get to reach Prague and closer to 9 hours to reach Krakow, which would be two great choices if it was faster to reach them. Prague still might be a good choice, but my top recommendation would be Vienna, which is only about 2.5 hours away by train.

From Vienna you can reach Salzburg in a bit over two hours, or you could reach Prague or Cesky Krumlov in about 4 hours. Vienna and Salzburg would make a nice combination because they are both very different from Budapest and different from each other, since Vienna is a capital and Salzburg is a historic town at the base of the Alps.

As for how long to stay in Budapest, I think 3 days or so is enough to see the main sights, but it’s a large city with plenty to see and it’s also pretty easy on the budget so staying longer could be fun. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

We are almost done planning our trip and booking rooms. When we get to Slovenia, we are planning to spend two nights in Ljubljana and trying to figure out where to spend the other two nights. We want to visit the following locations (Piran, Skocjan Caves, wine country in Vipava and Vrhpolje, (unless you have other recommendations for wine), Predjama Castle, Postojna Cave, and So?a River if we have time). If we visit these places, is it better to stay in Piran or Trieste, Italy? Do you have other ideas or suggestions.

Thank you again for all your help! E-Beth

This looks like an incredible trip and I wish I was joining you. Unfortunately I don’t think I can be of much help with this question because I based myself in Ljubljana and visited a few places from that base. But I do like the idea of only 2 nights in the capital and then 2 nights in the country. My hunch would be that English would be more widely spoken in Piran than Trieste, and Piran would probably also be a bit cheaper, but I’m not even sure of that. Based on what you’ve come up with so far, I can tell that you are something of an expert travel planner, and I’m confident that you can make the right choice by checking out wikitravel articles or lonely planet or even TripAdvisor reviews. Have a great trip. -Roger

hi roger-my husband and i are planning a trip to europe ( first ) for him. we have a month and will probably fly to london first and from there to spain. we like smaller coastal towns and want to see 3or4 destinations.we would like to sidestep the crowds and looking for reasonable prices. we are in our early sixtys looking for a relaxing holiday with some siteseeing. i know this is wide open but planning this trip is somewhat overwhelming…….so many places to see. london , athens, travel by train to coastal towns in spain……then jump on a plane……and not sure where. any advise would appreciated. thank you

I think I understand, but it would help to know the time of year you are going. The thing is, there are hundreds of small coastal towns that are swamped with visitors all July and August, and then very pleasant in September and October, and then pretty dead starting in November. Most of the Greek islands are this way, and many of the smaller ones are virtually shut down from November through April. I’m happy to help you more once I know the time frame we are dealing with.

For now I’d say that both Spain and Portugal have many small coastal towns that might work for you, depending on the month of your visit. Some areas of both country’s coasts are very touristed, but other areas that are less so. As long as you are going after August, you should find what you described in the Costa del Sol area of Spain as well as Portugal’s Algarve region. Those are both comprised of smaller towns rather than new beach cities with high-rise buildings. And they are both fairly cheap as well, especially after August.

France has plenty of small towns along its Mediterranean coast, but the ones with hotels and people who understand English are typically quite expensive. The same goes with Italy. Croatia has some nice options and that is cheaper. Greece of course does as well, including all of the islands. Again, I’m happy to give you detailed advice if I know more about when you plan to go and what else you are interested in. -Roger

Insider Today

Qatar Airways has reclaimed the title of best airline in the world after losing out in 2023, according to travel industry rating company Skytrax.

Once again, airlines from Asia and the Middle East dominated the awards, sweeping the top six spots and taking 12 of the top 20.

European carriers accounted for seven of the top 20 spots, with Turkish Airlines ranked highest in seventh.

No airlines from the US made the top 20 after Delta Air Lines fell one spot in this year's rankings to 21st. Delta was one of only two US airlines to crack the top 50, with United in 42nd.

Here's a closer look at the 20 best airlines in the world for 2024 according to Skytrax:

Irish city with complex history is becoming one of Europe's ‘coolest’ spots

A city steeped in complex history has become one of Europe’s hot spots , according to a popular travel magazine. Belfast has the best of what Ireland has to offer.

While it was once associated with shipbuilding and sectarian conflict, the city of Belfast is now booming with artists, chefs, and tech specialists that would rival any other city in mainland Europe. With plenty to offer, Conde Nast Traveller named Belfast ‘one of the coolest spots in Europe.’

Tourist traffic in Belfast has certainly been on the rise in recent years, both from international visitors and people crossing the border from the Republic of Ireland. That’s because Belfast has earned itself a reputation as a bustling and contemporary city with plenty to offer. Traveller credits the “abundance of music, the sumptuousness and originality of the hotels, the cross-community meetings of minds.”

The city, which they write is “reclaiming itself from dereliction,” has old-school charm with contemporary attractions, like some of the best up and coming restaurants and cocktail bars in Ireland. Entrepreneurship is blooming amongst the younger generation in Northern Ireland , who are feeding energy back into the community.

The scars of the complex and sometimes painful history can still be felt all over the city, which elevates the experience of sightseeing. Each landmark has a story, from the Titanic m useum , to the murals in the Shankill and Falls roads. The reclamation of the Irish language in some areas of the city also adds a level of authenticity to the tourist experience.

Best for swimming: Croatia has the cleanest natural bathing waters in all of Europe

Croatia boasts some of the most stunning natural coves in the world. The country is also home to some of the cleanest bathing waters in Europe, according to the European Commission (EC) and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

From the island of Korcula to Hvar or Mljet, visitors to Croatia often look beyond Dubrovnik to enjoy the sublime waters of the Adriatic Sea. In fact, the country’s many natural coves offer the prospect of a relaxing vacation far from the crowds that flock to the country’s tourist hotspots.

In Croatia, the beauty of the sea is not its only asset. The coastal bathing waters are clean, too, according to European Union officials.

Every year, the EEA in association with the EC takes an in-depth look at the quality of bathing water within the EU, to assess whether there are risks of bathers developing illnesses due to the presence of viruses or bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Their work is therefore not focused solely on general water quality.

The report covers 22,081 sites in the EU, Switzerland and Albania. This includes, for example, Lake Geneva and Finland’s lakes, as well as the waters of Copenhagen (Denmark) harbour and the Marseille Calanques (France). The results are somewhat reassuring, since only 1.5% of bathing waters in Europe were judged to be poor.

However, there is a disparity between inland and coastal waters, with bathing quality of coastal water generally proving better. In 2023, 89% of the coastal bathing sites monitored were of excellent quality, compared to just under 79% of inland bathing waters.

In Croatia, 99.1% of coastal waters were rated as excellent, covering 886 out of 894 sites. Vacationers who haven’t chosen Croatia can rest assured that bathing will also be enjoyable in Greece, Cyprus and Austria, where water quality was also rated as excellent.

“Although most of Europe’s bathing waters are in excellent condition from a bacteriological perspective, pollution of surface and groundwaters remains significant and may be exacerbated by the changing climate. Improving water resilience for people and for the environment in coming years will be key,” say the EC and the EEA.

The quality of bathing water is a major public health issue, and is the subject of a number of similar rankings at local level. – AFP Relaxnews

Election latest: Party leaders vote as the UK goes to the polls; dogs spotted at polling stations

Polling stations are open until 10pm. Scroll down to read how to follow Sky's election night coverage.

  • Key election day timings
  • In pictures: Dogs, dogs, more dogs... and a horse at polling stations
  • Why is there no political news today?
  • What is the exit poll?
  • How to watch election night coverage on Sky News

Dogs (and some other animals) across the country have been having a great time at polling stations today.

Here's a round-up of some of the best.

Byron the Bernedoodle was very happy to be at the polling station in Allerton Library, Liverpool.

His owner told Sky News: "He loves going in anywhere he's not normally allowed.

"They said he was the dog of the day!"

Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party, posed for a photo outside a polling station in Bristol after casting her vote.

Chelsea Pensioners have been pictured voting at a polling station set up in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, central London.

The impressive retirement home for about 300 army veterans was opened in 1692.

Chelsea Pensioners are well known in the area near Sloane Square as they wear their distinctive scarlet coats when out and about.

While in the grounds of the hospital, they wear a blue uniform, fondly known as "blues" - which is what they are seen in here.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey was all smiles as he and his wife, Emily Gasson, arrived at a polling station in Surbiton, southwest London, to cast their votes.

This is the first general election in which all voters will need to provide ID in order to cast a ballot.

There are 22 different types of ID you can use. For people without photo ID, Voter Authority Certificates are available - but you must have applied by 26 June.

Here's everything you need to know.

What ID can eligible voters use to vote in elections?

  • Most forms of existing photo ID will be accepted, including:
  • UK or Northern Ireland photocard driving licence (full or provisional)
  • driving licence issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Isle of Man or any of the Channel Islands
  • UK passport
  • passport issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or a Commonwealth country
  • PASS card (National Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
  • biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • Defence Identity Card (MOD form 90)
  • national identity card issued by the EU, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein
  • Northern Ireland Electoral Identity Card
  • Voter Authority Certificate
  • Anonymous Elector's Document

The following travel passes will also be accepted:

  • older person's bus pass
  • disabled person's bus pass
  • Oyster 60+ card
  • Freedom Pass
  • Scottish National Entitlement Card (NEC)
  • 60 and Over Welsh Concessionary Travel Card
  • Disabled Person's Welsh Concessionary Travel Card
  • Northern Ireland concessionary travel pass

Voters can still use photo ID that is out of date, as long as it still looks like them and the name is the same one used to register to vote.

What ID do you need if you're voting as someone's proxy?

You'll need to take your own ID if you're voting on someone else's behalf. You do not need to take theirs.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross was joined by his whole family to the polling station he and his wife, Krystle, voted at in Elgin.

Alastair, five, and James, three, were pictured being held by their parents outside Fogwatt Hall in Longmorn.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar was joined by his wife, Furheen, as they voted in Glasgow this morning.

One of their three children, son Aliyan, also joined them.

We've had photos of your dogs, cats and horses at polling stations - and we would like even more for today's general election coverage.

Any type of animal is welcome.

Include where the polling station is, the name of your pet and your name, if you wish.

Here is how to send them to us:

If you want to send us pictures and video from your mobile phone use ' Your Report ' on the Sky News app.

Or send us a message on WhatsApp .

By sending us your video footage/photographs/audio you agree we can broadcast, publish and edit the material and pass it onto others for similar use in any media worldwide, without any payment being due to you. Please do not submit your contribution unless you accept this.

No matter how big or small, dogs are welcome at polling stations.

Some may not be allowed to go in (check at your polling station), but this Bernese mountain dog was granted entry in Oval, south London, this morning.

Elsewhere, Nala the Chihuahua chose to stand guard outside a polling station in Walthamstow while her owner, Simon, voted inside.
