Nehru Planetarium Delhi Address : Teen Murti Bhavan, Teen Murti Marg Area , New Delhi , Delhi , 110011 , India
If reaching out to stars appears difficult for you, we have a way out… literally! Just reach out to Nehru Planetarium Delhi and you will get a close glimpse of the sun, moon, stars and the planets.
Nehru Planetarium Delhi is one of the five planetariums named after India’s first Prime Minister JawaharLal Nehru. The five Nehru Planetariums are located in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune Bangalore and Allahabad. The one in Allahabad, though, is named the Jawahar Planetarium.
Officially known as Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, the Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi is built in the Teen Murti Bhavan. It was earlier the official residence of Prime Minister JawaharLal Nehru, which is now converted into a museum in his fond memories.
The museum was built as an initiative from the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, that was set up in 1964. With the aim of promoting Astronomy education in India, the Jawaharlal Nehru fund took the task of setting up the Nehru Planetarium. The planetarium was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi on 6th February 1984. This place is not only an attraction for the astronomers but also kids who throng to get up close and personal with the planets and stars in the sky.

Inside the Nehru Planetarium Delhi
You will be impressed by the overall aura of the place. Located in the lush green surroundings, the Nehru Planetarium is a place for people who want to spend some time away from the hustle-bustle of the city. However, one must know that the place is located in the heart of the city.
One of the most popular attractions of Nehru Planetarium is the Sky Theatre. Over 200,000 people turn up to the planetarium to visit the theatre each year. This dome-shaped theatre displays information on planets, constellations, and stars. The information is beautifully presented with the help of paintings, computer animations, cartoons, video clippings and special effects. Various programmes are created with these objects to display information in the Sky Theatre.
One of the major attractions in the planetarium is Soyuz T-10. It was used by Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian cosmonaut, to travel to space. The Nehru Planetarium gives a glimpse of his journey with his mission journal and his space suit as well.
Nehru Planetarium Delhi was closed for renovations, which costed around Rs 11 crore. It was reopened for the general public in 2010, and some new interesting additions were made to the planetarium post that. Something that future astronauts look forward to in the Nehru Planetarium Delhi is the ’Definiti optical star projector “Megastar”. With this device, one can see as many as 2 million stars at the same time.
The Nehru Planetarium Delhi becomes a major attraction during eclipses. When a major solar eclipse occurs, the planetarium arranges for solar filters, telescopes, projections boxes, etc. for the public to get a close glimpse of these eclipses. Visiting this kind of a place once in a while is great as they not only take us to another world with scientific understanding but also educate us about the world above us.
How to reach Nehru Planetarium Delhi
Bus: There are DTC buses playing to and from the Nehru Planetarium at frequent intervals. You can look out for buses number 680, 720, 615 and 604 to travel to and from the planetarium.

India to send tourists to space: Why space tourism matters
Updated Jul 22, 2022, 15:31 IST
As space came within reach, space tourism became the next logical step for humans to focus their engineering endeavours on. Years of efforts, beginning in the late 1990s, are beginning to bear results now.

Virgin Galactic to Launch Space Tourism Flight as Waiting Lists Grow
Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift
June 7th, 2024 at 1:51 PM EDT
Virgin Galactic joins Blue Origin and Space Perspective in aspiring to make the final frontier open to all who can afford it. That's good news for travel agencies like RocketBreaks.
Jesse Chase-Lubitz
Virgin Galactic plans to send a handful of paying passengers to the edge of space on June 8 as the space industry continues to grow and diversify.
“So far, there are about 3,000 to 4,000 people on the waiting lists for these trips,” said David Doughty, co-founder of the space travel agency RocketBreaks . His agency has secured contracts with seven tourists looking to launch into orbit and has set a date for one.
Virgin Galactic’s flight will take off from New Mexico on Saturday and carry three private passengers from California, New York, and Italy. Tuva Cihangir Atasever , a researcher-astronaut from infrastructure company Axiom Space, and two commanders will accompany them.
Virgin Galactic has not released the identities of the private passengers.
In an email to Skift, the company said, “We don’t consider our mission to take people to space, “tourism.” Those who fly with us become astronauts in what is a very thoughtful, purposeful journey that begins when they purchase a ticket.”
The passengers, whose identities were not disclosed, will enjoy a roughly 90-minute journey to the edge of space that includes a few minutes of zero gravity.
The company’s website states that spaceflight tickets cost $450,000, though it doesn’t disclose what passengers truly paid. On a recent earnings call, executives said the average price per seat on this flight is over $800,000 hope to charge a ticket price of $600,000 . Blue Origin doesn’t publicize its prices, but they have been said to range between $200,000 and over $1 million .
The space tourism industry
Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic are known for their shorter suborbital flights, while SpaceX focuses on bringing tourists into orbit and to the International Space Station.
In August 2023, Virgin Galactic brought a health and wellness coach and her 18-year-old daughter who had won a fundraising competition by Space for Humanity, a non-profit that seeks to democratize space travel to space.
BlueOrigin , which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, has sent more than two dozen passengers into space. SpaceX , founded by Elon Musk, brought an all-tourist crew back from space in 2021.
The industry is growing and diversifying. One company, called Space Perspective , is offering an even more luxurious experience, with VIP seating, a toilet, Michelin-star catering, and WiFi. Rather than a 90-minute round trip, this experience would last closer to six hours.
A space travel agency
“This is our number one product,” said Doughty. “People don’t necessarily want this fast 15-minute adrenaline field journey. They want a full experience. There are people that are planning to get married and have the first weddings in space.”
The waiting list for Space Perspective is already about 800 names long, according to Doughty. The first flight is scheduled to launch in 2027.
Virgin Galactic plans to retire its current spacecraft after this flight and start developing a new generation of Delta spaceships, which the company hopes will have the capacity to launch up to eight times per month and carry more passengers. Private astronaut flights are expected to resume in 2026. But the company will have to find a way to stay financially viable in the meantime .
The future of space tourism
RocketBreaks sees the industry widening to different types of experiences. “You can really personalize the experience and we help people find the journey they want,” said Doughty. “We could plan anything from a child meeting an astronaut for his birthday, a bucket list trip in your 70s and you don’t like G-Force, something for a premier league footballer who wants to feel the adrenaline.”
The technology is developing rapidly and confidence is slowly building, said Barry Shanks, director at RocketBreaks. “There’s going to be a great deal of marketing going on, so then I think we will see a rise,” he said.
“In the long term, like 10 years time, we’re looking at doing a trip around the moon that will be no different than flying from London to Australia,” said Shanks of RocketBreaks.
CORRECTION : This article originally said Virgin Galactic’s latest flight on June 8 would be its second with paying passengers. It will be its seventh. We’ve also added this statement: “On its latest earnings call, the company said the average price per seat on this flight was over $800,000.”

Travel Beyond Earth: Exploring the Future of Space Tourism
Posted: March 22, 2024 | Last updated: March 22, 2024
Space tourism, once a mere figment of science fiction, rapidly evolves into a tangible reality, offering the most intrepid travelers an unprecedented opportunity to venture beyond Earth’s confines. This burgeoning industry promises to redefine the boundaries of exploration, providing experiences ranging from suborbital flights to extended stays in space stations. As private companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic spearhead this new era, the dream of gazing upon Earth from the vastness of space is closer than ever. This guide explores the forefront of space tourism, presenting ideas that mark the future of extraterrestrial travel.
1. Suborbital Spaceflights
Image Credit: Shutterstock / Dima Zel
Suborbital spaceflights represent the threshold of human space exploration, offering a brief yet profound journey beyond the confines of Earth’s atmosphere. This experience allows you to witness the curvature of the Earth against the backdrop of the infinite cosmos, a sight that has transformed the perspective of many astronauts.
During the flight, you’ll experience a few minutes of weightlessness, floating freely within the cabin, an exhilarating and serene sensation. Companies leading this venture, such as Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic, utilize cutting-edge spacecraft designed for safety, comfort, and the optimal viewing experience. The flights are meticulously planned, with each phase — from the rocket’s ascent to the silent glide back to Earth — maximizing the passenger’s experience of space.
Insider’s Tip: Opt for a comprehensive training program offered by these companies to prepare physically and mentally for the rigors and euphoria of space travel.
2. Orbital Spaceflights
Orbital spaceflights are the next frontier for private space tourism, offering an extended stay in low Earth orbit. This experience goes beyond the brief moments of weightlessness, allowing you to live and move in space, witnessing multiple sunrises and sunsets in a single day from the vantage point of a spacecraft. Currently, this level of space travel is offered by companies like SpaceX, which plans to use its Crew Dragon spacecraft to transport private citizens to orbit.
While aboard, you’ll experience life as modern astronauts, from sleeping in zero gravity to observing the Earth from a unique orbital perspective. The journey is about experiencing the day-to-day life of an astronaut, making it a profoundly transformative experience.
Insider’s Tip: Engage in a rigorous pre-flight conditioning regimen to ensure you can fully enjoy and participate in the activities and demands of living in space.
3. Space Hotels

The concept of space hotels is set to revolutionize space tourism, offering a luxurious stay in orbit. These hotels, planned by companies like Axiom Space, aim to attach habitable modules to the International Space Station or even construct free-flying space stations designed for commercial use.
Guests can expect accommodations that combine the thrill of space with the comforts of Earth, including rooms with views of the planet below, space-grown food, and recreational activities adapted for microgravity. Space elevators could get us to Mars in record time — and Japan is planning one for 2050
- A space elevator could make it much cheaper and faster to get goods to other planets, like Mars.
- The Obayashi Corporation based in Japan announced in 2012 plans to begin building one by next year.
- Not only would it cost $100 billion, there are huge technological and organizational challenges.
Imagine a long tether linking Earth to space that could launch us to orbit at a fraction of the cost and slingshot us to other worlds at record speed.
That's the basic idea behind a space elevator .
Instead of taking six to eight months to reach Mars, scientists have estimated a space elevator could get us there in three to four months or even as quickly as 40 days .
The concept of space elevators isn't new, but engineering such a structure would be no easy feat , and many other issues besides technology stand in the way.
That's why the ambition to seriously build one is fairly recent.
The Japan-based company Obayashi Corporation thinks it has the expertise.
Japan aims to build a space elevator by 2050
Known for constructing the world's tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree , Obayashi Corporation announced in 2012 that it would reach even loftier heights with its own space elevator.
In a report that same year, the company said it would begin construction on the $100-billion project by 2025 and could start operations as early as 2050.
We checked in with Yoji Ishikawa, who wrote the report and is part of the company's future technology creation department, to see how the project is progressing ahead of 2025.
While Ishikawa said the company likely won't start construction next year, it is currently "engaged in research and development, rough design, partnership building, and promotion," he told Business Insider.
Some have doubted such a structure is even possible.
"It's been sort of a kooky idea," said Christian Johnson, who published a report on space elevators last year in the peer-reviewed Journal of Science Policy & Governance.
"That said, there are some people who are real scientists who are really on board with this and really want to make it happen," Johnson said.
A cheaper route to space
Launching humans and objects into space on rockets is extremely expensive. For example, NASA has estimated its four Artemis moon missions will cost $4.1 billion per launch .
The reason is something called the rocket equation . It takes a lot of fuel to get to space, but the fuel is heavy, which increases the amount of fuel you need. "And so you see the kind of vicious cycle there," Johnson said.
With a space elevator, you don't need rockets or fuel.
According to some designs, space elevators would shuttle cargo to orbit on electromagnetic vehicles called climbers. These climbers could be remotely powered — like through solar power or microwaves — eliminating the need for on-board fuel.
In his report for the Obayashi Corporation, Ishikawa wrote that this type of space elevator could help drop the cost of moving goods to space to $57 per pound. Other estimates for space elevators in general have put the price at $227 per pound.
Related stories
Even SpaceX's Falcon 9, which, at around $1,227 per pound, is one of the cheaper rockets to launch, is still about five times as expensive as the higher cost estimates for space elevators.
There are other benefits besides cost, too.
There's no danger of a rocket exploding , and the climbers could be zero-emission vehicles, Johnson said. At a relatively leisurely pace of 124 miles per hour, the Obayashi Corporation's climbers would travel slower than rockets with fewer vibrations, which is good for sensitive equipment.
Ishikawa said the Obayashi Corporation sees a space elevator as a new kind of public works project that would benefit all of humankind.
There's not enough steel on Earth to make a space elevator
Right now, one of the biggest obstacles to building a space elevator is what to make the tether or tube from.
To withstand the tremendous tension it would be under, the tube would have to be very thick if it were made out of typical materials, like steel. However, "if you try to build it out of steel, you would need more steel than exists on Earth," Johnson said.
Ishikawa's report suggested Obayashi Corporation might use carbon nanotubes . A nanotube is a rolled-up layer of graphite, the material that's used in pencils.
It's much lighter and is less likely to break under tension compared to steel, so the space elevator could be much smaller, Johnson said. But there's a catch.
While nanotubes are very strong, they're also tiny, a billionth of a meter in diameter. And researchers haven't made them very lengthy. The longest is only about 2 feet.
To be properly balanced while still reaching geosynchronous orbit — where objects stay in sync with Earth's rotation — the tether would need to be at least 22,000 miles long, per Ishikawa's report.
"So we're not there," Johnson said of the nanotube length. "But that doesn't mean it's impossible."
Instead, researchers might need to develop an entirely new material, Ishikawa said.
Other obstacles
Whatever the material turns out to be, there are still other problems.
For instance, a space elevator's tether would be under such incredible tension that it would be prone to snapping, Johnson said. A lightning strike could vaporize it. There's also other weather to consider like tornadoes, monsoons, and hurricanes.
Locating the tether base at the equator would lessen the likelihood of hurricanes , but it would still need to be in the open ocean to make it more difficult for terrorists to target, Johnson said.
It would also take a lot of trips to make up for that giant price tag for construction.
That's only scratching the surface of the challenges. And they can't all be solved by one company, Ishikawa said. "We need partnerships," he said. "We need different industries."
"Of course," Ishikawa said, "raising funds is very essential."
That's a lot of obstacles to overcome to start construction in time for operation by 2050, especially since Ishikawa estimated it would take 25 years to build. He noted that the 2050 estimate always came with caveats about the technology progressing. "It's not our goal or promise," he said, but the company is still aiming for that date.
"I think that those time estimates are optimistic," Johnson said, "even assuming there was a breakthrough tomorrow."

A Groundbreaking Scientific Discovery Just Gave Humanity the Keys to Interstellar Travel
In a first, this warp drive actually obeys the laws of physics.
If a superluminal—meaning faster than the speed of light—warp drive like Alcubierre’s worked, it would revolutionize humanity’s endeavors across the universe , allowing us, perhaps, to reach Alpha Centauri, our closest star system, in days or weeks even though it’s four light years away.
However, the Alcubierre drive has a glaring problem: the force behind its operation, called “negative energy,” involves exotic particles—hypothetical matter that, as far as we know, doesn’t exist in our universe. Described only in mathematical terms, exotic particles act in unexpected ways, like having negative mass and working in opposition to gravity (in fact, it has “anti-gravity”). For the past 30 years, scientists have been publishing research that chips away at the inherent hurdles to light speed revealed in Alcubierre’s foundational 1994 article published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity .
Now, researchers at the New York City-based think tank Applied Physics believe they’ve found a creative new approach to solving the warp drive’s fundamental roadblock. Along with colleagues from other institutions, the team envisioned a “positive energy” system that doesn’t violate the known laws of physics . It’s a game-changer, say two of the study’s authors: Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics, and Jared Fuchs, Ph.D., a senior scientist there. Their work, also published in Classical and Quantum Gravity in late April, could be the first chapter in the manual for interstellar spaceflight.
POSITIVE ENERGY MAKES all the difference. Imagine you are an astronaut in space, pushing a tennis ball away from you. Instead of moving away, the ball pushes back, to the point that it would “take your hand off” if you applied enough pushing force, Martire tells Popular Mechanics . That’s a sign of negative energy, and, though the Alcubierre drive design requires it, there’s no way to harness it.
Instead, regular old positive energy is more feasible for constructing the “ warp bubble .” As its name suggests, it’s a spherical structure that surrounds and encloses space for a passenger ship using a shell of regular—but incredibly dense—matter. The bubble propels the spaceship using the powerful gravity of the shell, but without causing the passengers to feel any acceleration. “An elevator ride would be more eventful,” Martire says.
That’s because the density of the shell, as well as the pressure it exerts on the interior, is controlled carefully, Fuchs tells Popular Mechanics . Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, according to the gravity-bound principles of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity . So the bubble is designed such that observers within their local spacetime environment—inside the bubble—experience normal movement in time. Simultaneously, the bubble itself compresses the spacetime in front of the ship and expands it behind the ship, ferrying itself and the contained craft incredibly fast. The walls of the bubble generate the necessary momentum, akin to the momentum of balls rolling, Fuchs explains. “It’s the movement of the matter in the walls that actually creates the effect for passengers on the inside.”
Building on its 2021 paper published in Classical and Quantum Gravity —which details the same researchers’ earlier work on physical warp drives—the team was able to model the complexity of the system using its own computational program, Warp Factory. This toolkit for modeling warp drive spacetimes allows researchers to evaluate Einstein’s field equations and compute the energy conditions required for various warp drive geometries. Anyone can download and use it for free . These experiments led to what Fuchs calls a mini model, the first general model of a positive-energy warp drive. Their past work also demonstrated that the amount of energy a warp bubble requires depends on the shape of the bubble; for example, the flatter the bubble in the direction of travel, the less energy it needs.
THIS LATEST ADVANCEMENT suggests fresh possibilities for studying warp travel design, Erik Lentz, Ph.D., tells Popular Mechanics . In his current position as a staff physicist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, Lentz contributes to research on dark matter detection and quantum information science research. His independent research in warp drive theory also aims to be grounded in conventional physics while reimagining the shape of warped space. The topic needs to overcome many practical hurdles, he says.
Controlling warp bubbles requires a great deal of coordination because they involve enormous amounts of matter and energy to keep the passengers safe and with a similar passage of time as the destination. “We could just as well engineer spacetime where time passes much differently inside [the passenger compartment] than outside. We could miss our appointment at Proxima Centauri if we aren’t careful,” Lentz says. “That is still a risk if we are traveling less than the speed of light.” Communication between people inside the bubble and outside could also become distorted as it passes through the curvature of warped space, he adds.
While Applied Physics’ current solution requires a warp drive that travels below the speed of light, the model still needs to plug in a mass equivalent to about two Jupiters. Otherwise, it will never achieve the gravitational force and momentum high enough to cause a meaningful warp effect. But no one knows what the source of this mass could be—not yet, at least. Some research suggests that if we could somehow harness dark matter , we could use it for light-speed travel, but Fuchs and Martire are doubtful, since it’s currently a big mystery (and an exotic particle).
Despite the many problems scientists still need to solve to build a working warp drive, the Applied Physics team claims its model should eventually get closer to light speed. And even if a feasible model remains below the speed of light, it’s a vast improvement over today’s technology. For example, traveling at even half the speed of light to Alpha Centauri would take nine years. In stark contrast, our fastest spacecraft, Voyager 1—currently traveling at 38,000 miles per hour—would take 75,000 years to reach our closest neighboring star system.
Of course, as you approach the actual speed of light, things get truly weird, according to the principles of Einstein’s special relativity . The mass of an object moving faster and faster would increase infinitely, eventually requiring an infinite amount of energy to maintain its speed.
“That’s the chief limitation and key challenge we have to overcome—how can we have all this matter in our [bubble], but not at such a scale that we can never even put it together?” Martire says. It’s possible the answer lies in condensed matter physics, he adds. This branch of physics deals particularly with the forces between atoms and electrons in matter. It has already proven fundamental to several of our current technologies, such as transistors, solid-state lasers, and magnetic storage media.
The other big issue is that current models allow a stable warp bubble, but only for a constant velocity. Scientists still need to figure out how to design an initial acceleration. On the other end of the journey, how will the ship slow down and stop? “It’s like trying to grasp the automobile for the first time,” Martire says. “We don’t have an engine just yet, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Warp drive technology is at the stage of 1882 car technology, he says: when automobile travel was possible, but it still looked like a hard, hard problem.
The Applied Physics team believes future innovations in warp travel are inevitable. The general positive energy model is a first step. Besides, you don’t need to zoom at light speed to achieve distances that today are just a dream, Martire says. “Humanity is officially, mathematically, on an interstellar track.”
Before joining Popular Mechanics , Manasee Wagh worked as a newspaper reporter, a science journalist, a tech writer, and a computer engineer. She’s always looking for ways to combine the three greatest joys in her life: science, travel, and food.

What is the future of travel?
All aboard! After the pandemic upended life and leisure as we know it, travel is roaring back. The industry is set to make a full recovery by the end of 2024, after losing 75 percent of its value in 2020. Much of this has been so-called “revenge travel,” or people embarking on international or bucket list trips that were delayed by the pandemic. But domestic travel is recovering quickly too and is set to represent 70 percent of travel spending by 2030.

We’ve done a deep dive into the latest travel trends and how industry players can adjust accordingly in The state of travel and hospitality 2024 report. Check out the highlights below, as well as McKinsey’s insights on AI in travel, mass tourism, and much more.

Who are today’s travelers, and what do they want?
In February and March 2024, McKinsey surveyed 5,000 people in China, Germany, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom, and the United States who had taken at least one leisure trip in the past two years. Here are six highlights from the results of that survey:
- Travel is a top priority, especially for younger generations. Sixty-six percent of travelers we surveyed said they are more interested in travel now than before the COVID-19 pandemic. And millennials and Gen Zers are traveling more and spending a higher share of their income on travel than their older counterparts.
- Younger travelers are keen to travel abroad. Gen Zers and millennials who responded to our survey are planning nearly an equal number of international and domestic trips in 2024. Older generations are planning to take twice as many domestic trips.
- Baby boomers are willing to spend if they see value. Baby boomers still account for 20 percent of overall travel spending. They are willing to spend on comforts such as nonstop flights. On the other hand, they are more willing to forego experiences to save money while traveling, unlike Gen Zers who will cut all other expense categories before they trim experiences.
- Travel is a collective story, with destinations as the backdrop. Travelers both want to hear other travelers’ stories and share their own. Ninety-two percent of younger travelers were inspired by social media in some shape or form for their last trip.
- What travelers want depends on where they’re from. Sixty-nine percent of Chinese respondents said they plan to visit a famous sight on their next trip, versus the 20 percent of European and North American travelers who said the same. Respondents living in the UAE also favor iconic destinations, as well as shopping and outdoor activities.

What are the top three travel industry trends today?
Travel is back, but traveler flows are shifting. McKinsey has isolated three major themes for industry stakeholders to consider as they look ahead.
- The bulk of travel spending is close to home. Seventy-five percent of travel spend is domestic. The United States is currently the world’s largest domestic travel market, but China is set to overtake it in the coming years. Stakeholders should make sure they capture the full potential of domestic travelers before turning their attention abroad.
- New markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe are growing sources of outbound tourism. Indians’ travel spending is expected to grow 9 percent per year between now and 2030; annual growth projections for Southeast Asians and Eastern Europeans are both around 7 percent.
- Unexpected destinations are finding new ways to lure travelers and establish themselves alongside enduring favorites. Rwanda, for example, has capitalized on sustainable tourism by limiting gorilla trekking permits and directing revenue toward conservation.
Introducing McKinsey Explainers : Direct answers to complex questions
For a more in-depth look at these trends, check out McKinsey’s State of travel and hospitality 2024 report .
How will AI change how people travel?
In the 1950s, the introduction of the jet engine dramatically reduced travel times, changing the way people traveled forever. Now AI is upending the industry in a similarly fundamental way. Industry players down to individual travelers are using advances in generative AI (gen AI) , machine learning , and deep learning to reimagine what it means to plan, book, and experience travel. “It’s quite clear,” says McKinsey partner Vik Krishnan , “that gen AI significantly eases the process of travel discovery.”
For travel companies, the task now is to rethink how they interact with customers, develop products and services, and manage operations in the age of AI. According to estimates by McKinsey Digital, companies that holistically address digital and analytics opportunities have the potential to see an earnings improvement of up to 25 percent .
McKinsey and Skift Research interviewed executives from 17 companies across five types of travel business. Here are three key findings on how travel companies can reckon with emerging technologies, drawn from the resulting report The promise of travel in the age of AI :
- Segmentation. Companies can use AI to create hyperspecific customer segments to guide how they interact with and serve customers. Segmentation can be based on a single macro characteristic (such as business versus leisure), or it can be so specific as to relate to just one customer.
- Surprise and delight. In the travel context, gen AI could take the form of digital assistants that interact with customers throughout their journeys, providing personalized trip itineraries and tailored recommendations and helping to resolve unexpected disruptions.
- Equipping workers better. AI tools can free up frontline workers’ time, allowing them to focus more on personal customer interactions. These tools can also shorten the training time for new hires and quickly upskill the existing workforce.
AI is important, yes. But, according to Ella Alkalay Schreiber, general manager (GM) of fintech at Hopper, “The actual challenge is to understand the data, ask the right questions, read prediction versus actual, and do this in a timely manner. The actual challenge is the human thinking, the common sense .”
How is mass tourism changing travel?
More people are traveling than ever before. The most visited destinations are experiencing more concentrated flows of tourists ; 80 percent of travelers visit just 10 percent of the world’s tourist destinations. Mass tourism can encumber infrastructure, frustrate locals, and even harm the attractions that visitors came to see in the first place.
Tourism stakeholders can collectively look for better ways to handle visitor flows before they become overwhelming. Destinations should remain alert to early warning signs about high tourism concentration and work to maximize the benefits of tourism, while minimizing its negative impacts.
For one thing, destinations should understand their carrying capacity of tourists—that means the specific number of visitors a destination can accommodate before harm is caused to its physical, economic, or sociocultural environment. Shutting down tourism once the carrying capacity is reached isn’t always possible—or advisable. Rather, destinations should focus on increasing carrying capacity to enable more growth.
Next, destinations should assess their readiness to handle mass tourism and choose funding sources and mechanisms that can address its impacts. Implementing permitting systems for individual attractions can help manage capacity and mitigate harm. Proceeds from tourism can be reinvested into local communities to ensure that residents are not solely responsible for repairing the wear and tear caused by visitors.
After risks and funding sources have been identified, destinations can prepare for growing tourist volumes in the following ways:
- Build and equip a tourism-ready workforce to deliver positive tourism experiences.
- Use data (gathered from governments, businesses, social media platforms, and other sources) to manage visitor flows.
- Be deliberate about which tourist segments to attract (business travelers, sports fans, party groups, et cetera), and tailor offerings and communications accordingly.
- Distribute visitor footfall across different areas, nudging tourists to visit less-trafficked locations, and during different times, promoting off-season travel.
- Be prepared for sudden, unexpected fluctuations triggered by viral social media and cultural trends.
- Preserve cultural and natural heritage. Engage locals, especially indigenous people, to find the balance between preservation and tourism.
How can the travel sector accelerate the net-zero transition?
Global warming is getting worse, and the travel sector contributes up to 11 percent of total carbon emissions. Many consumers are aware that travel is part of the problem, but they’re reticent to give up their trips: travel activity is expected to soar by 85 percent from 2016 to 2030. Instead, they’re increasing pressure on companies in the travel sector to achieve net zero . It’s a tall order: the range of decarbonization technologies in the market is limited, and what’s available is expensive.
But decarbonization doesn’t have to be a loss-leading proposition. Here are four steps travel companies can take toward decarbonization that can potentially create value:
- Identify and sequence decarbonization initiatives. Awareness of decarbonization levers is one thing; implementation is quite another. One useful tool to help develop an implementation plan is the marginal abatement cost curve pathway framework, which provides a cost-benefit analysis of individual decarbonization levers and phasing plans.
- Partner to accelerate decarbonization of business travel. Many organizations will reduce their business travel, which accounts for 30 percent of all travel spend. This represents an opportunity for travel companies to partner with corporate clients on decarbonization. Travel companies can support their partners in achieving their decarbonization goals by nudging corporate users to make more sustainable choices, while making reservations and providing data to help partners track their emissions.
- Close the ‘say–do’ gap among leisure travelers. One McKinsey survey indicates that 40 percent of travelers globally say they are willing to pay at least 2 percent more for carbon-neutral flights. But Skift’s latest consumer survey reveals that only 14 percent of travelers said they actually paid more for sustainable travel options. Travel companies can help close this gap by making sustainable options more visible during booking and using behavioral science to encourage travelers to make sustainable purchases.
- Build new sustainable travel options for the future. The travel sector can proactively pioneer sustainable new products and services. Green business building will require companies to create special initiatives, led by teams empowered to experiment without the pressure of being immediately profitable.
What’s the future of air travel?
Air travel is becoming more seasonal, as leisure travel’s increasing share of the market creates more pronounced summer peaks. Airlines have responded by shifting their schedules to operate more routes at greater frequency during peak periods. But airlines have run into turbulence when adjusting to the new reality. Meeting summer demand means buying more aircraft and hiring more crew; come winter, these resources go unutilized, which lowers productivity . But when airlines don’t run more flights in the summer, they leave a lot of money on the table.
How can airlines respond to seasonality? Here are three approaches :
- Mitigate winter weakness by employing conventional pricing and revenue management techniques, as well as creative pricing approaches (including, for example, monitoring and quickly seizing on sudden travel demand spikes, such as those created by a period of unexpectedly sunny weather).
- Adapt to seasonality by moving crew training sessions to off-peak periods, encouraging employee holiday taking during trough months, and offering workers seasonal contracts. Airlines can also explore outsourcing of crew, aircraft, maintenance, and even insurance.
- Leverage summer strengths, ensuring that commercial contracts reflect summer’s higher margins.
How is the luxury travel space evolving?
Quickly. Luxury travelers are not who you might expect: many are under the age of 60 and not necessarily from Europe or the United States. Perhaps even more surprisingly, they are not all millionaires: 35 percent of luxury-travel spending is by travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million. Members of this group are known as aspirational luxury travelers, and they have their own set of preferences. They might be willing to spend big on one aspect of their trip—a special meal or a single flight upgrade—but not on every travel component. They prefer visibly branded luxury and pay close attention to loyalty program points and benefits .
The luxury-hospitality space is projected to grow faster than any other segment, at 6 percent per year through 2025. And competition for luxury hotels is intensifying too: customers now have the option of renting luxurious villas with staff, or booking nonluxury hotels with luxury accoutrements such as rainfall showerheads and mattress toppers.
Another critical evolution is that the modern consumer, in the luxury space and elsewhere, values experiences over tangible things (exhibit).
Luxury properties may see more return from investing in a culture of excellence—powered by staff who anticipate customer needs, exceed expectations, create cherished memories, and make it all feel seamless—than in marble floors and gold-plated bath fixtures. Here are a few ways luxury properties can foster a culture of excellence :
- Leaders should assume the role of chief culture officer. GMs of luxury properties should lead by example, to help nurture a healthy and happy staff culture, and listen and respond to staff concerns.
- Hire for personalities, not resumes. “You can teach someone how to set a table,” said one GM we interviewed, “but you can’t teach a positive disposition.”
- Celebrate and reward employees. Best-in-class service is about treating customers with generosity and care. Leaders in the service sector can model this behavior by treating employees similarly.
- Create a truly distinctive customer experience . McKinsey research has shown that the top factor influencing customer loyalty in the lodging sector is “an experience worth paying more for”—not the product. Train staff to focus on tiny details as well as major needs to deliver true personalization.
What’s the latest in travel loyalty programs?
Loyalty programs are big business . They’ve evolved past being simply ways to boost sales or strengthen customer relationships; now, for many travel companies, they are profit centers in their own right. One major development was that travel companies realized they could sell loyalty points in bulk to corporate partners, who in turn offered the points to their customers as rewards. In 2019, United’s MileagePlus loyalty program sold $3.8 billion worth of miles to third parties, which accounted for 12 percent of the airline’s total revenue for that year. In 2022, American Airlines’ loyalty program brought in $3.1 billion in revenue, and Marriott’s brought in $2.7 billion.
But as this transition has happened, travel players have shifted focus away from the original purpose of these programs. Travel companies are seeing these loyalty programs primarily as revenue generators, rather than ways to improve customer experiences . As a result, loyalty program members have become increasingly disloyal. Recent loyalty surveys conducted by McKinsey revealed a steep decline in the likelihood that a customer would recommend airline, hotel, and cruise line loyalty programs to a friend. The same surveys also found that airline loyalty programs are driving fewer customer behavior changes than they used to.
So how can travel brands win customers’ loyalty back? Here are three steps to consider:
- Put experience at the core of loyalty programs. According to our 2023 McKinsey Travel Loyalty Survey , American respondents said they feel more loyal to Amazon than to the top six travel players combined, despite the absence of any traditional loyalty program. One of the reasons for Amazon’s success may be the frictionless experience it provides customers. Companies should strive to design loyalty programs around experiential benefits that make travelers feel special and seamlessly integrate customer experiences between desktop, mobile, and physical locations.
- Use data to offer personalization to members. Travel brands have had access to customer data for a long time. But many have yet to deploy it for maximum value. Companies can use personalization to tailor both experiences and offers for loyalty members; our research has shown that 78 percent of consumers are more likely to make a repeat purchase when offered a personalized experience.
- Rethink partnerships. Traditionally, travel companies have partnered with banks to offer cobranded credit cards. But many credit card brands now offer their own, self-branded travel rewards ecosystems. These types of partnerships may have diminishing returns in the future. When rethinking partnerships, travel brands should seek to build richer connections with customers, while boosting engagement. Uber’s partnership with Marriott, for example, gives users the option to link the brands’ loyalty programs, tapping into two large customer bases and providing more convenient travel experiences.
In a changing travel ecosystem, travel brands will need to ask themselves some hard questions if they want to earn back their customers’ loyalty.

Travel to India
The marriage of feudalism to freedom is the grandest of India's many paradoxes, and part of its magic and charm. India's people are utterly free, yet the situations of many are fixed in time, at roughly 100 years ago. Contradictions in everyday Indian life may leave you nonplussed on your first trip here. No matter how quickly it charges onto the information super-highway, India remains an enigma, a perplexity, and a puzzle you simply can't solve. And every time you think you know the place, something happens to jolt you out of your complacency.

Intrepid’s local leaders share insider tips
Passionate local leaders are at the heart of every Intrepid trip. They’ve got the experience and all the insider info you could need when you’re exploring somewhere new.
If you’ve been on an Intrepid trip, you’ll know that local leaders have a deep-rooted connection to the countries they share with visitors. After exploring a destination’s ins and outs, they also know a thing or two about travelling. So I asked a few leaders to share their travel wisdom for your next adventure.
Explore with an open mind
If you genuinely want to embrace your travels, Fidelio Montes, a leader in Belize , says being open-minded ‘covers everything.’ Huyen Nguyen , in Vietnam, seconds this, adding that travelling with an open mind gives you ‘the chance to interact with local people and dive into culture more easily.’
Matteo Guisti, a local leader based in Rome, explains that the trick to having an open mind is to embrace differences. ‘Learn from other cultures,’ he says, ‘and be curious and adventurous and always be respectful and polite. This will make a huge and positive difference in the way you will impact a different culture and a different culture will impact you. With this mindset, only good things lie ahead.’
Pack light
Packing light is easier said than done – who’s to say you definitely won’t need everything plus the kitchen sink? But Intrepid leaders suggest going light on luggage because that makes it easier to roam free. Colombia’s Andres Castellanos reckons ‘travelling is more enjoyable when you’re not weighed down by unnecessary belongings.’
Plus, when you’re excited about a trip, dealing with a suitcase stuffed to the max isn’t always stress-free. Wes Michels-Ratliff of California’s biggest trip is always travel with a carry-on. ‘I’ve never lost luggage but had travellers with lost luggage many times.’
Phurba Sherpa , a trekking leader in Nepal who’s braved the Himalayas more than once, thinks that smart packing is the way forward (no matter where you’re going). ‘Consider packing versatile and lightweight clothing to accommodate various weather conditions.’
Meet the locals
With an open mind and a (literal) weight off your shoulders, it’s time to immerse yourself in a new destination. The best place to start is by getting to know the people who call it home. Phurba says engaging with fellow travellers and locals is how you ‘create lasting memories from your journey.’
Soner Gul is a local leader in Turkey , a country where being warm and generous to visitors is deeply ingrained in the culture. ‘My advice for every traveller is this: when you visit a new country, take every opportunity to meet locals. I always encourage travellers in my group to connect with people from small towns and villages. That’s when you’ll truly understand a culture better, and that’s when you’ll have an amazing experience.’
Intrepid trips centre around such experiences – from staying with families to taking part in community activities. Moroccan leader Hassan Errami says, ‘immersing yourself in the local customs by trying traditional cuisine and engaging with the friendly locals will enhance your overall experience.’
And respect the locals
While meeting and interacting with locals is a big part of the Intrepid experience, it shouldn’t be taken for granted. It’s a privilege to be welcomed into someone’s home and given a window into their culture or taught their traditions and crafts.
The least travellers can do is to ‘respect local customs and traditions, fostering positive interactions with the community,’ says Phurba. Croatia’s Davor Karlovic shares a similar sentiment, asking visitors to ‘always respect the local culture and environment.’
Hassan also has advice for anyone looking to support local craftspeople and observing etiquette when taking part in local customs like haggling. ‘Bargaining is a common practice in the markets (souks) of Morocco . However, it’s important to do it respectfully and with a smile. Remember that both parties should feel satisfied with the final price.’
Plan ahead, but leave room for spontaneity
Intrepid’s itineraries balance planned activities and free time to do your own exploring. Local leaders agree that having a blend of both makes for an unforgettable experience. ‘Some of the best travel memories come from unplanned adventures, so leave room for serendipity,’ says Andres.
If you like to know what’s happening day-to-day while travelling, Davor suggests ‘researching and planning your trip, but leaving room for spontaneous adventures.’ One way you can do that is by taking a page from Hassan’s travel playbook. His top tip is to ‘venture into the countryside. Take the time to explore the lesser-known regions for a more authentic experience.’
Always leave room for a meal
Breaking bread with someone is often the simplest way to make a connection and the easiest place to begin. As Phurba says, all you need to do is ‘dive into the local cuisine for an authentic experience and keep a flexible itinerary to allow for discoveries.’
In places where food is at the heart of the country’s culture, this is especially true – it pays to be adventurous and try out stuff you haven’t done before. In Italy , Matteo feels people understand that better than most. ‘A meal is never just about filling your belly. It’s a ritualistic experience. It’s a way of forging connections in a communal vibe surrounded by history and heritage,’ he says.
Reach out to your local leader
Travelling with Intrepid is all about gaining a new perspective on the places and cultures you visit. Vuong Truong, a local leader from Vietnam, feels the best way to do that is to ask. ‘My best travel tip is to never mind having questions for your leader, especially about the country, because the more questions you ask, the better experiences and knowledge you’ll have.’
Follow in the footsteps of a local leader on your next adventure .

Stefan Prince
Despite adventures in making ice cubes for a living, serving bao buns from a converted ambulance, and working in a peanut butter factory, Stefan was searching still searching for his life's calling. Then he read a listicle for the first time. The path was clear and knew what to do. That pursuit has led to becoming a global brand copywriter for Intrepid.

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.
If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.
Traveling in Europe
If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:
- Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
- Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
- Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
- Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
- Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.
On our Country Information pages , you can find passport validity requirements and other important information for your destination country. If your passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, you may be:
- Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
- Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.
An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.
You should also check passport validity requirements if traveling onward from the Schengen area to a country outside the Schengen area. You can find this information in our Country Information pages.
HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?
- With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
- If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.
Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.
How can the U.S. government help me if border officials do not let me enter?
- We can give you the contact information of foreign embassies of the countries you wish to visit.
- We can provide information about hiring an English-speaking foreign attorney overseas if you choose to do so.
- Note: We cannot influence a foreign government’s decision about allowing you to enter. We cannot intervene in another country’s criminal or administrative procedures.

Seamless Baggage Transfers: Delhi Airport's Innovative Approach
Passengers at delhi's indira gandhi international airport may soon experience a hassle-free journey as the airport operator plans to implement airside baggage transfers between terminals 1 and 3. awaiting approval, this innovative solution aims to streamline a significant part of the travel process, enhancing passenger comfort and convenience..
Passengers at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport may soon breathe a sigh of relief. The airport operator is on the verge of implementing a system that will ensure the seamless transfer of checked-in baggage between Terminals 1 and 3 through the airside.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) is currently seeking approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for this pioneering proposal. Officials have indicated that similar measures may also be instituted for transferring baggage from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 for international flights.
The planned system eradicates the cumbersome process of passengers personally transporting their baggage between terminals, thereby significantly enhancing the travel experience.
