Bengaluru or Bangalore , also known as the Garden City, boasts numerous gardens and parks, but none rival the historic significance and popularity of Lalbagh Botanical Garden and Cubbon Park . These two iconic green spaces are the crown jewels of Bengaluru.

As part of our Bengaluru Prayana (Prayana meaning journey in Kannada), my friend and I embarked on a journey to explore different facets of the city. One of our chosen walking trails led us to the enchanting Lalbagh, where we delved into its rich history and breathtaking beauty.

About Lalbagh Botanical Garden

Expanding over 240 acres, Lalbagh Botanical Garden boasts a remarkable collection of over 1000 plant and tree species. Initially commissioned by Hyder Ali and later enriched by his son Tipu Sultan , Lalbagh boasts a history spanning over two centuries.

Legends suggest that Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan harboured a profound affection for botanical wonders, engaging in trade with merchants from distant lands to procure exotic plants in exchange for spices. This legacy has bestowed Lalbagh with a diverse array of flora from across the globe.

Following Tipu Sultan’s era, Lalbagh fell under British rule, evolving into a cherished social and recreational hub for the community. The name “Lalbagh” is derived from the combination of “Bagh,” meaning garden, and “Lal,” possibly signifying red, owing to its original floral palette. Alternatively, some contend that “Lal” may symbolize beloved, adding another intrigue to the garden’s name.

How to Get to Lalbagh?

Lalbagh offers access through four distinct entrances:

• The main or North gate
• The East gate
• The West gate
• The South (small) gate

Parking facilities are conveniently located near the East gate for visitors arriving by car. The parking fees typically range from INR 30 to INR 50.

Alternatively, the metro provides a hassle-free and cost-effective transportation option to Lalbagh. The nearest metro station is a mere 100 to 200 meters from the West gate, offering easy access to the garden’s entrance.

Entrance Ticket and Timings

• Visitors must acquire an entry ticket priced at INR 30 per person to gain admission to Lalbagh. These tickets are available for purchase at designated counters located at each entrance.
• Operating hours for Lalbagh are from 6 AM to 7 PM. However, it’s important to note that the gardens and walking tracks experience significant crowding during the morning and evening hours.

Things to Know Before Visiting Lalbagh

Please note the following guidelines for visiting Lalbagh:

• Digital cameras are prohibited within the park, but mobile phones for photography are permitted.
• Outside food is prohibited; however, numerous food and fruit vendors can purchase snacks and fruits.
• Sports equipment is not allowed within the premises.
• Due to the presence of snakes, exercise caution and stay on designated walking paths.
• Please refrain from littering; the park provides ample dustbins for proper disposal of garbage.
• Pay-and-use toilet facilities are available within the park.
• Wear comfortable footwear as Lalbagh spans a vast area and requires extensive walking.
• For those seeking a more leisurely experience, eco-friendly (electric) carts are available at the ticket counter for a supplementary fee of INR 100 per person.
• Drinking water tanks are conveniently located throughout the park for refilling water bottles.

Things to See in Lalbagh

Situated adjacent to the west gate of Lalbagh stands the guardroom, a structure erected in 1940. Resembling a lantern, this room features glass windows and is crafted from granite. Originally intended for the watchman, the room provided a vantage point for overseeing activities within the vicinity.

The West gate of Lalbagh, one of its charming entrances, welcomes visitors with its picturesque allure. Adjacent to this gate, on the right-hand side upon entry, stands a captivating stone entrance that offers a glimpse into the park’s rich architectural heritage.

Lalbagh Lake

Covering an expanse of 40 acres and boasting a maximum depth of 3.5 meters, Lalbagh Lake is a captivating natural gem celebrated for its rich biodiversity. This picturesque lake is adorned with two charming islands and serves as a sanctuary for a plethora of native and migratory bird species. Among the most frequently spotted avian inhabitants are cormorants, herons, kingfishers, egrets, pelicans, and Brahmini kites.

The Bandstand at Lalbagh, conceived by William New, a former British superintendent, was built over the period between 1858 and 1864. Historically, this structure served as a venue for entertainment, hosting military bands for performances and gatherings.

Hero Stones

Referred to as Veeragallu or Masti Kallu in Kannada, Hero Stones are ancient memorial markers dating back at least 500 years. These stones typically recount tales of valour, commemorating the sacrifices and heroic deeds of individuals who perished in battle or made significant sacrifices.

Constructed in the 1890s, the Dovecote is a sanctuary for pigeons and doves. This circular structure stands at a height of 15 feet and features holes encircling the upper walls. Its primary function is providing shelter and freedom to these avian residents.

Fossil Tree

Believed to be approximately 20 million years old, the fossil tree showcased at Lalbagh originates from the National Fossil Park in Tamil Nadu. The display consists solely of the trunk of this ancient tree, offering visitors a glimpse into its remarkable geological history.

Art Installations

Scattered throughout Lalbagh are numerous art installations crafted from deceased trees, some of which have stood for 200 to 250 years. Mango trees are frequently utilized in these artworks. While appreciative of the creativity showcased, I believe it would enhance the experience if each installation featured details such as the artist’s name, the artwork’s title, and the conceptual inspiration behind it.

Constructed in 1889, the Glasshouse stands adjacent to the Bandstand and was erected in honour of the visit by Albert Victor, the grandson of Queen Victoria and former Prince of Wales. Its primary function is to provide a conducive environment for plants to acclimate to new surroundings and weather conditions. Additionally, the Glass House serves as the primary venue for the annual Lalbagh flower show.

White Cotton Silk Tree

The White Cotton Silk Tree is a towering testament to time, estimated to be over 200 years old. This majestic deciduous giant reaches impressive heights of 25 to 30 meters. Its fruits yield white cotton sticks, which find utility in crafting pillows or bedding materials. Moreover, owing to its lightweight wood, the tree’s timber is commonly employed in constructing packing cases.

Floral Clock

Established in 1983, the Floral Clock is a prominent feature within a flower bed, centrally positioned and guarded by the iconic seven dwarfs from the beloved fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Generously donated by Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), this grand clock adds a touch of whimsy and charm to its surroundings.

Chamarajendra Wodeyar Statue

Lalbagh proudly houses a striking statue commemorating the 23rd King of Mysore , Chamarajendra Wodeyar X , who reigned from 1868 to 1894. This majestic sculpture stands as a testament to his legacy within the picturesque surroundings of the garden.

African Boabab Tree

Originating from the African continent, the African Baobab tree is renowned for its longevity, with some specimens believed to have lived for over 2000 years. Its distinctive trunk is characterized by a swollen, bottle-shaped appearance, capable of storing an impressive amount of rainwater, up to 1250 litres.

Peninsula Gneiss

Commonly referred to as Lalbagh Rock or Lalbagh Hill, the Peninsula Gneiss holds a geological heritage dating back 2.5 to 3.4 billion years. Recognizing its significance, the Geological Survey of India designated the hill as a National Geological Monument in 1975, cementing its importance in India’s geological history.

Kempegowda Watch Tower

Constructed in the 18th century by Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore, the Kempegowda Watch Tower is a testament to the city’s rich history. Designed to demarcate the boundaries of Bangalore, this tower is one of four strategically positioned around the city.

Is Lalbagh Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Lalbagh offers a safe environment for solo female travellers , with continuous monitoring and guards stationed throughout the park. However, exercise caution and watch your step, as the park is known to harbour snakes. Additionally, be vigilant, particularly after sunset when the park can become dimly lit.

• Lalbagh Botanical Garden

Lalbagh is one of Bengaluru’s major attractions. A sprawling garden situated in a 240 acres piece of land in the heart of the city, Lalbagh houses India’s largest collection of tropical plants and sub-tropical plants, including trees that are several centuries old. Exhibits like the Snow White and the seven dwarfs, and a topiary park, an expansive lake, a beautiful glasshouse modelled around the Crystal Palace in London adorn the park giving it a surrealistic atmosphere. A watchtower perched on top of a 3000 million years old rocky outcrop (which is a National Geological Monument), built by Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru also adorns the picturesque garden.

Why visit Lalbagh:

Lalbagh Glass House: Lalbagh Glass House is a giant palace like glass and iron structure, inspired by Crystal Palace in London’s Hyde Park. Lalbagh glass house was built in 1989 and renovated in 2004 and remains the primary attraction for visitors of Lalbagh.

Lalbagh Lake : Lalbagh has a large lake in its southern part, complete with walking trails, a bridge and a mini waterfall.

Seasonal attractions at Lalbagh : Lalbagh hosts several events throughout the year- Lalbagh flower show during Republic Day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August), Mango/Jackfruit festivals during summer, cultural shows at Band stand are some of the popular events held in Lalbagh.

Other attractions at Lalbagh :

Bonsai Garden, large rock and Kempegowda watchtower, flower clock, Hibiscus garden are some of the other interesting spots to explore inside Lalbagh botanical gardens.

Lalbagh Visiting Hours:

Lalbagh botanical gardens are open daily from 6 AM to 7 PM. Entry is free during early morning and late evening (6 to 9 AM and 6 to 7 PM). A nominal fee applies during the day time.

Facilities available at Lalbagh:

Lalbagh has several shops run by the horticulture department of the Karnataka Government as well as a few private vendors. These shops sell fruits, vegetables, fruit juices and various snack items. 

Public toilets are available near the Glass House. Lalbagh has 4 different entrances one in each direction making it easy for visitors to enter and exit as per their convenience. The west gate is very close to Lalbagh Metro train station while parking is available at the double road entrance.

How to reach Lalbagh :

Lalbagh is located 7 km south of the city center (Majestic area) and 38 km from the Bengaluru airport. Lalbagh can be accessed using the Bengaluru metro rail network from different parts of Bengaluru city. Buses, autos or taxis are readily available to reach Lalbagh.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden is located in Bangalore and is nationally and internationally renowned centre for botanical artwork, scientific study of plants and also conservation of plants. A haven for all nature lovers, Lal Bagh covers an area 240 acres in the heart of the city and has nearly 1,854 species of plants. It was commissioned by Hyder Ali in 1760 and completed by his son Tipu Sultan. The garden features rare plants of French, Persian and Afghani origin and has attained the status of a Government Botanical Garden. The Lal Bagh Rock which is over 3000 million years old is found here and is a major tourist attraction. 

This botanical garden, a delight for photographers, also consists of the famous glass house where an annual flower show is held every year and is also a home to an aquarium and a lake. Tipu Sultan brought in imported trees and plants from countries all over the world and planted them here and today, Lalbagh Botanical Garden has one of the world's largest collection of rare plants. In addition to being rich in foliage, this garden also houses a number of birds such as Myna, Parakeets, Crows, Brahminy Kite, Pond Heron, Common Egret and Purple Moor Hen.

At a distance of 6 km from Bangalore City Railway Station, Lalbagh Botanical Garden is a botanical garden situated near the Lalbagh Fort Road in Bangalore. It is one of the largest botanical gardens in India, and among the most attractive places to visit in Bangalore . Located in South Bengaluru, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is the first of its kind, with planned routes, glasshouses, and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property. The ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali commissioned the development of the garden in 1760 and was completed by his son Tipu Sultan, who designed the garden keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. The garden attained the status of a Government Botanical Garden in 1856. It is one of the peaceful places to visit as part of Bangalore Packages . This rock, which is said to be over 3000 years old, is one of the oldest rocks in the world and can be found in the center of the garden.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens is during winter, which lasts from November to March in Bangalore. Even though the gardens remain open throughout the year, it can get pretty stuffy and hot during summer.

2. Bangalore Fort:  Bangalore Fort is located 2.4km from Lalbagh. It was built by Kempe Gowda in the 15th century and was renovated by Hyder Ali in the 17th century. Although there were initially nine massive gates, the Delhi Gate is the only survivor.

3. Bull Temple : The Bull Temple is not only an incredible specimen of Indian art and architecture but is also the oldest temple in Karnataka. It is dedicated to Nandi- the loyal consort of Lord Shiva. It is 3.4 km from the botanical garden and is a place you must visit when you are in Bangalore.

4. Cubbon Park:  Located 4.6 km from the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Cubbon Park is an expanse of clean and organized greenery, right in the heart of the city. Gulmohar and silver oak trees grow in abundance in the park which is frequented by people for its fresh air and peaceful atmosphere.

Lalbagh is not only one of the most well-developed botanical gardens in India with a wealth of exotic flora and fauna, but also a historically significant place. Hyder Ali who was the ruler of Mysore between 1761-1782, commissioned the construction of the garden. In fact, he was known for the many gardens whose foundations he laid and architecture he ordained during his reign as emperor.

The development of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden was then taken over by his son Tipu Sultan who added to the beauty of the garden by importing trees and plants of his own from faraway countries.The layout of the garden was based on the sprawling Mughal gardens that were being constructed throughout the Mughal Empire, especially the one at Sira- an important Mughal outpost in South India and a little distance away from Bangalore city.

After its completion in the 18th century, Lalbagh also received India’s first lawn-clock and was home to the largest collection of exotic plants in the Indian subcontinent. By 1860, Lalbagh also had animals like orangutans, peacocks, rhinos, deer and emus. The foundation for the now-famous glasshouse was laid by Prince Albert Victor in 1889, where the structure was modeled on the Crystal Palace in London. Today, Lalbagh is home to some of the most exotic plant and bird species and is also the resting place of the Lalbagh Rock, one of the oldest rocks on the planet.

Flower show at Lalbagh Botanical Garden

The bi-annual flower show at the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is a spectacle to behold. People travel from far and wide from India and even from abroad to witness millions of flowers, thousands of plants and the incredible artistry that goes into making the figurines and flower structures.

The show takes place twice a year- once during January in the same week as the Indian Republic Day, and another time in August, during Independence Day. Each year, a different theme is chosen and flower arrangements are made according to the theme.

About Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens

Spread across 40 acres of land, Lal Bagh is one among Bangalore famous gardens . Located in South Bangalore, on the Lalbagh road, this botanical garden is an ideal place to spend a few relaxing moments amid the refreshing greenery. Stalls - Lal Park in Bangalore has a wide array of stalls within its compound. These stalls sell horticulture products ranging from seeds, plants, flowers, gardening equipment as well as Vetiver handicrafts. This garden also has stalls for natural fruit juices and sweets and savouries, making the garden a perfect place to hang out where you are offered with not only lush greenery but also shopping and eating choices. These stalls are used for horticulture exhibition during the yearly flower shows.

Glass House - Rightly called as the ‘Jewel of the Garden City’, Glass house is the most attractive part of Lal Bagh Bangalore. Its architectural style is similar to that of Crystal Palace of London. London’s Crystal Palace, however, caught fire in an unfortunate situation in 1936 and hence was remodelled.

Glass house at Lal Bagh was proposed by John Cameron, Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens. It was built in the year 1889 and was again renovated in 2004. This glass house was built to mark grandson of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert Victor’s visit to India.

Flower Clock - Inside the Botanical Garden, the first thing that capture visitors’ attention is flower clock that was set up in 1983 by HMT watch factory. This flower clock functions on the mechanism of electronic quartz. It has a dial which has a diameter of around 7 meter. There are statues of dwarves in front of the clock, which along with the beautifully decorated dial with colourful flowers, create a sight worth remembering.

Lalbagh Lake : Lalbagh Botanical Garden also has a natural lake named Lalbagh Lake which is located on its southern end. Spread over 40 acres of land and a depth of 3.5 meters, Lalbagh Lake has two islands, which add further to its enchanting beauty. Around the lake, there is path that is lined with trees. It is a popular path for morning and evening walks. There is bridge over this lake that goes to the eastern end. A walk on this bridge with calm waters and greenery around promises a magical experience. Lalbagh Lake connects the two ponds in the garden, namely Lotus Pond and the Sunken Pond.

Lalbagh lake is natural lake but its development was commissioned by James Cameron, the then Superintendent of Lalbagh in the year 1890. During his time, steps were built to the lake, a water weir to the lake was also built. The lake was developed primarily to serve the water requirement of the garden. Lalbagh Lake also boasts of being the first lake in Karnataka where the Khus Grass, Vetiveria Zizanioides, has been used to clean the water.

Lalbagh Lake serves as a home to many migratory and aquatic birds as well. The islands inside the lake are ideal for breeding and nesting for these birds. Some of the commonly spotted birds around the lake are Black Pelican, Egret, Great Cormorant, Night Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Oriental Darter, White-breasted Kingfisher, Parakeet, cranes, swans, Little Cormorant, Spot billed Pelican , Grey Heron, White Pelican, etc.

Topiary Garden - It is an attractive section of the botanical garden, especially for children, where plants such as Junipers and Cypress are projected in different animal shapes such as lion, tiger, elephants, etc. These plants are shaped and maintained on steel structure of animals.

Tree fossil - Brought from Tamil Nadu state, the tree fossil is a carbonized trunk of coniferous tree that is around 20 million year old. It is placed between the Topiary Garden and Band Stand.

Pigeon House -This is a small structure in cylindrical shape. It was constructed in 19th century to serve as a home for pigeons. It has the capacity of housing more than 100 pairs of pigeons.

Bonsai Garden - Spread over 2 and half acres of land, Bonsai Garden comprises of more than 700 bonsai plants of varying species. These plants are 5 to 35 years old and exhibited specially during the annual flower shows.

Pigeon Colony - Near to the West Gate, which is one of the Lalbagh Main Gate , pigeon colony is located. It was created in 2007. It is a triangle shaped platform set amidst the beautifully laid our garden. It was built with the purpose of attracting pigeon population.

Lecture Hall - Originally built for conducting horticulture classes the lecture hall is located near the shade garden. With a royal Mysore emblem engraved on it, it presents impressive architecture.

Guard Room -Located at the West gate of the garden, Guard room has a captivating structure. It has the structural shape of a lantern which is made up of granite. Its glass windows make the structure even more attractive.

Band Stand -Constructed in 1870, during the British era, Band stand was the place where army personals used to relax and play. It was used for organising flower shows in 19th century.

Bombax tree - This massive tree is something that you cannot miss when at lalbagh. It is located near the West Gate. This old tree is adjacent to the Topiary garden.

Kempegowda Tower - Kempegowda tower, is one of the four famous towers which were built by Kempegowda in 1597. This tower was built to serve as territorial mark and a watch tower. An artistically built tower, it stands on a huge rock. It is well maintained.

LalBagh Rock - One of the oldest Peninsular Gneiss rocks in the world, Lalbagh rock is said to be more than 3000 million years old. On this hillock, the Kempegowda tower has been built.

Lalbagh Gates - Lalbagh Botanical Garden Bangalore has four entrances. The garden is surrounded by stone walls from all the sides with four gates. Lalbagh main gates are North Gate, South Gate, West Gate and East Gate. North Gate is towards the Subbaiah circle. This also serves as primary exit gate. The other one is West Gate, which is near Siddapur Circle; it is towards the Basavangudi. East Gate is towards the Double Road. One can reach this gate if coming via Jayanagar area. South Gate, which is also referred as the main gate is close to the Lalbagh Road.

A major attraction of Lalbagh Bangalore is the flower shows that are conducted every year on the eve of Independence Day and Republic Day. Lalbagh flower show with its unique display of flowers allure hordes of tourists. It is the most famous flower show in Bangalore .

A must visit for both tourists and residents, Lalbagh Independence Day flower show is a 10 day long festival which is conducted conjointly by Department of Horticulture and Mysore Horticulture Society. At the flower show, flowers are displayed in interesting shapes varying from dinosaurs, woman, houses, etc.

Lalbagh flower show timings are from 9 AM to 6 PM. The tickets for flower show can be booked online as well. Lalbagh flower show ticket price is Rs.50 per person for adults on holidays and Rs.40 per person on weekdays. The entry fee for children is Rs.10 per person.

History of Lalbagh Bangalore

Lalbagh Bangalore was built as a private garden by Mysore ruler Hyder Ali in 16th century. It was then spread over 40 acres of land. This garden was designed in the style similar to that of Mughal gardens. As per Archaeological Survey of India and various other researches, Lalbagh is similar to a Mughal Garden that was located in Sira at Tumkur, around 120 km away from Bangalore.

Lalbagh Bangalore was developed further by Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali. It was Tipu Sultan who developed Lalbagh horticulture . Plants and trees from various parts of the world such as Cape Town, Persia, Kabul, Turkey, Mauritius, etc., were brought and nurtured in the garden.

Later, this garden was developed during the British reign and further after independence. Some of the notable personalities who were also superintendents of the garden contributed significantly in the development of Lalbagh are Dr. Wallich, William Munroe, Major Waugh, Sir Mark Cubbon, William New, Krumbiegel, John Cameron, Dr. M.H. Marigowda, Dr. Cleghorn, Rao Bahadur H.C. Javaraya, K. Nanjappa and many others.

In the year 1856, this garden was offered the status of Government Botanical Garden. Currently, Lalbagh botanical garden is spread over 240 acres of land and is maintained by the Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka.

Timings of Lalbagh Bangalore

Lalbagh Bangalore Timings are from 6 AM to 7 PM. It is open on all days of the week. The entry fee of Lalbagh is Rs.20 per person for visitors above 12 years of age. Visitors are allowed to take camera inside with an extra charge of Rs.50.

There is no entry fee for morning walkers at the park. The morning walk timings at Lal Bagh are 6 AM to 9 AM in morning and 6 PM to 7 PM for evening walks.

Lal Bagh Bangalore is well connected to the rest of the city. There are regular buses that stop at one of the gates of LalBagh. The main bus stand, Kempegowda Bus Station is only 7 km away from the garden. Visitors can also hire an auto rickshaw or private taxi and reach the park without any trouble.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden History

The Lalbagh Botanical Garden was built by Hyder Ali in 1760 and was known as the Rose or Cypress Garden until 1856. Hyder Ali was a big fan of Mughal Gardens and hence wanted to establish it in his city also. He was influenced by his father, who worked for Dilawar Khan, a viceroy of the Mughals, and was particularly passionate about establishing gardens.

Many species of rare plants, trees and shrubs were added after the construction of Lalbagh Botanical Garden and most of these were added by Tipu Sultan. The foundation of the famous Glass House inside Lalbagh was laid in the year 1898 which was further built by John Cameron in the image of the Crystal Palace of London.

The eastern gate is located near Jaynagar and the western gate is located near Sidhpura Circle.
