Remember that first time you heard Skid Row?

"Youth Gone Wild" was on MTV. "18 and Life" was a summertime hit single and the band was on the covers of Hit Parader, Circus, and Metal Edge magazines. That exhilarating sound of being young was everywhere. We saw and heard ourselves in the band and rallied around their oversized choruses of camaraderie and rebellion.

Rob Hammersmith saw himself in that gang mentality. "I was looking for that," he remembers. "Everybody goes through that phase of me against the world, where you just have to stand up and assert yourself. Every kid goes through that, and Skid Row made you realize that you're not alone."

Snake Sabo realized he wasn't alone after striking up a songwriting partnership with Rachel Bolan. "I saw all this talent he had -- and has -- and he brought something out of me. It made me go, man, this is the start of something. I'm like, yeah, this is where we're supposed to be at this moment in our lives. It was the birth of what would be Skid Row."

That something -- and that name -- represented the unrelenting impulse of rambunctious kids, channeling their love of punk and metal into something understood by a worldwide audience of other kids just like them.

"Right when we came up with the name -- Skid Row -- that's when I realized we were going to build something really special that really drew on our influences," Rachel remembers.

Their attitude and swagger was palpable in those songs. It was obvious. A demo of songs Rachel and Snake wrote together was the first time Scotti Hill heard Skid Row, and he wanted in. "It had three songs on it -- including 'Clock Strikes Midnight' -- and I loved all three of those songs. Right from the beginning, I loved where the music was going. I was like, I gotta be in this fucking band!"

That fucking band built something powerful and so timeless that years later, halfway around the world, it roused a young Swedish singer. "You're young, a bit crazy -- fist in the air and fuck yeah -- that kind of feeling," recalls Erik Grönwall. "Skid Row are the youth gone wild, and I wanted the same thing. I wanted that lifestyle."

It's cliché to say that a band has all their lives to write a first album. The truth is that they spend the rest of their lives trying to understand how they did it. The Gang's All Here is the octane of an attitude that's been festering since the band formed in 1986. Producer Nick Raskulinecz lit a creative wildfire by challenging them to deconstruct good ideas and rebuild them into something even better. Something timeless. He became the arbiter of their legacy, daring them to revert to instinct and be the same rambunctious kids who made their first two albums.

"On 'World On Fire,' I had written this very cool riff. Nick said, play the chord up here, an octave up from the original notes. It created a difficult move, and I didn't know how to physically do that, but he challenged me. The one time I got it right, he goes, now that's Skid Row. That was a heavy moment for me, this guy having to bring something that is Skid Row out of me, yet I'm a founding member of the band!"

"We were kids," Rachel says about writing songs that debuted Slave To The Grind at #1 on Billboard and made the self-titled album a #6 multi-platinum hit. "We wrote from a vastly different perspective. Nick got us back to that train of thought: what approach did we take on those first two records? What were we doing?"

"I wound up feeling the same as when we wrote "18 and Life" and "Youth Gone Wild," he says. "I felt like, whoa! We're doing something really cool here!"

Making the new album did feel just like the beginning, when the gang meticulously crafted songs together in a garage in New Jersey. "It's so much fun doing it like that, in a room banging it out," Scotti says. "This felt like we were back in that garage again, like the old days. The only difference is now we've got air conditioning and we're not breathing kerosene heater exhaust."

Rob knows the feeling. "The way we spent eight to ten hours a day, just trying ideas and playing things, that took us back to the feeling of being a kid in the garage with your friends," he says. "This album truly is a group effort, and I really enjoyed how much of a close knit group of guys this whole experience has been."

That creative closeness led to the spontaneity of actually writing new songs during rehearsal. Someone demonstrating new riffs quickly turned into "World On Fire" and "Not Dead Yet" being written on the spot. "We've never done that," Rachel says. "The other guys giving their input from square one, that really makes you work off instinct."

Still, Scotti says Rachel and Snake writing together is most characteristic of Skid Row. "The best stuff is what they do together, just the two of them. Let them do what they do. That's how it was in the beginning, and I think that's the best result now, that combination of the guy who writes the giant guitar riffs with the guy who has the punk influence and poetic type of street poetry."

"I wish I wrote these songs," Erik laughs. "There are a lot of great songs here. It's a nice problem to have when you have too many potential singles. There's a lot of old school Skid Row in these songs on this album, like 'Tear It Down,' which I like, as a fan."

That old school style makes The Gang's All Here immediately familiar. It's the sound of having a good time. "A lot of the songs are fun," Rachel says. "They're songs you can sing and move to, which is what our first two records did. You can fight to these songs. Drink to them. Strip to them. All the bases are covered."

Raskulinecz encouraged them to not be afraid to incorporate the signature accents that define their classic songs. He strove to make the band sound like the band, keeping the same philosophy producer Michael Wagener used to record them years ago.

"Nick is completely cognizant and respectful of the past," Snake says. "But it's more about the essence and soul of why we started this thing in the first place. He said, everything from the beginning of 1985, when I met Rachel, to 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee, is all Skid Row, and he was there to remind us of it."

Another déjà vu is Erik Grönwall and his snarling sound of a curled lip sneer that can turn on edge to soaring sweetness. "We wanted him to show his range," Rachel says. "We wanted him to really draw on his influences -- Skid Row just happens to be one of them -- but mainly just let go and do what he does best."

"That was my approach," says Erik. " A good balance between the old school stuff and the way I sing. I just had so much fun recording this album because I really enjoy singing this kind of music."

The first song he heard was "The Gang's All Here," and it made him feel like a kid all over again. "It was old school Skid Row for me -- the Skid Row I fell in love with. I thought, wow, they're really going back to the old school sound, and I think I can add some value here. I knew what I was going to do with it the first time I heard it."

From songwriting to performances, the whole band agrees that the ten tracks on The Gang's All Here are some of their best songs -- ever. There's also a noticeable connectedness in the songs that often gets lost in the technology of making music. "There's a thing Snake and I did together -- October's Song -- that we played a double lead at the end. It's real cool, and it was really fun to do. He stood on the left side of the room, I stood on the right, and we played together. That's how it needs to be done, and not a lot of people are doing that these days."

There will always be uncompromising expectations about how Skid Row needs to be done. Erik expects rigorous comparison to other singers throughout the history of the band, but people caring so much is a good thing, he says. "People actually giving a fuck speaks to the greatness of the band. If they care so much, that means the band is relevant."

"A lot of people have taken this ride with us," Snake says. "But even though we've all grown older -- and somewhat wiser -- the essence of who we all are still exists."

You won't be disappointed. The Gang's All Here is a revival of everything you ever loved about Skid Row. Snake calls it a rebirth. "There's a newfound energy and passion -- and excitement -- because we were challenged. When we're challenged, we rise to that challenge. We still have a lot left inside that we need to say. Making this album has shown me that we still have a lot left in the tank."

The gang's all here -- you, the band, and the attitude of being forever wild and young at heart. The Gang's All Here will rekindle everything you felt that first time hearing this band. It's like the first time you heard Skid Row, all over again.

Better work up the money, because someone is getting busted.

The bands were fantastic.

loved the bands, but when we stood up, the security guard kept telling us to sit down, but when we did we couldn't see over the people who could stand.. awful.. its a rock concert and only the people in the front could stand, couldn't see so left after 1 song of Skis row. terrible I think.

Skid Row/Buckcherry concert

The concert was great! I wish there was more audience participation tho. The only issue I had was with the venue. Getting drinks at intermission was a nightmare. There was 3 floors but only 2 floors were serving drinks and they only had 2 bartenders each. If they had more servers it would have been more efficient. Because of the slowness we missed parts of the concert. Other then that the bands were great!

Great time!

Longer concert then expected but with no complaints!

It was an awesome time

What a great show!! Well worth the admission. The venue was great. I would definitely recommend going. I had a blast!!!!

Was an amazing concert and experience.

Band was awesome and buckberry player awesome as well. Would have liked the concert to have been in a bigger venue.

Super fun - we had a blast

I met up with my cousin's super last minute so happy I managed to get a floor seat we had so much fun only downside not much for food, so not much to soak up all the beverages that's not the bands fault though they all rocked 😁

BEST CONCERT EVER!! Buckcherry and Skid Row were amazing!! What a concert! Best one I've been to and the energy was amazing! Sierra Pilot was good too!! Buckcherry brought such amazing energy and so did Skid Row, what a rock concert!

Skid Row killed it!!!

Buckcherry was good but I was disappointed that they played so many new songs when they have such a big catalog of great ones everyone knows. I understand promoting your new album, but fans pay to hear the bangers. SKID ROW on the other hand were freakin’ awesome!! Can’t say enough good things about it. We were right in the front row. What a killer rock show! The Skids really brought it. I even caught 2 guitar picks. One from Rachel Bolan and one that Scotti Hill through right too me. And anyone saying it’s no good because Sabatian Bach isn’t on lead vocals is wrong. New vocalist Erik killed it on every song and had great stage presence. He’s exactly what this band needs in 2024 and the band themselves seems pretty happy with him rather than ego maniac Baz. Go check this show out. It’s worth every penny!

Chairs at a rock show!

The show was good, except for the chairs, the rows were too close together so it made standing to see or rock out hard. Next time maybe get rid of the chairs. Who goes to a rock show to sit down

Awesome night.

All the bands brought it even though there were empty seats due to the rescheduling conflict. To be honest Skid Row is better now than they were the last time I seen them in the 90’s!!!!

Skid Row is one of the most popular and endearing Heavy Metal bands to come out of America. The apex of the group’s career took place in the late 80s and early 90s; however they are still actively performing and recording.

The band formed in 1986, but did not have a stable line up until the following year. The group was started by New Jersey natives Rachel Bolan who played the bass and Dave “The Snake” Sabo the group’s guitarist. In addition to those founding members, the band congealed into a core lineup consisting of vocalist Sebastian Bach, guitarist Scotti Hill, and drummer Rob Affuso.

The band had gathered somewhat of a following touring small clubs throughout the east coast of the United States. The group was in a way taken under the care of Sabo’s long-time friend Jon Bon Jovi and was signed by Bon Jovi’s manager Doc McGhee. Things started to fall into place for the band after that. They entered in a record contract with Atlantic Records in 1988 and subsequently recorded their debut self-titled album with renowned producer Michael Wagener who was responsible for producing works for Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and White Lion. Soon after recording their debut the band landed a stint opening for Bon Jovi on their “New Jersey tour”.

The album came out on 24 January 1989 and was an instant success. It peaked to No. 6 on The Billboard 200 and was loaded with the following 3 top 10 hits: “18 and Life”, “I Remember You” and “Youth Gone Wild”. Since the album’s release it has sold over 5 million copies and despite critics previous tendencies to pan heavy metal albums it managed to score positive reviews.

The band hit the road again with rock giants Aerosmith and entered in the studio to record their follow up album “Slave to the Grind” with Wagener. Their sophomore release came out in 1991 and marked a stylistic change for the band. Their sound was more stark and raw and incorporated experimental styles such as speed metal. Despite the band’s deviation from the mainstream rock sound they went on to repeat the commercial success that they experienced with their first album. “Slave to the Grind” put the band at No. 1 on the American charts and saw them opening for Guns N’ Roses.

The band released their third album “Subhuman Race” in 1995. Though it would not match the success of their first two albums, it managed to chart in the top 40s. The band promoted this release by opening for Van Halen.

The lineup of Skid Row dramatically changed with the departure of lead singer Sebastian Bach. Although the band did not release an album until 8 years later, they did continue to tour. Some of their dates were with KISS. The band would go on to release one other full length album “Revolutions per Minute” and also played their biggest show ever, playing the Polish Woodstock to over 500,000 attendees.

Live reviews

When I read that Skid Row were returning to my city I immediately became excited. I had seen them perform nearly 20 years ago. Upon arriving at the venue, a rush of excitement ran through me. This concert was going to be amazing.

I found my seat and waited for the show to begin. Behind the stage, a large screen showed clips from prior performances. The crowd was excited before the band even took the stage. The lights went on and the band started to perform "Monkey Business." The singer looked different. It wasn't Sebastian Bach. I asked someone who it was. They said it is Johnny Solinger. I soon forgot the absence of Sebastian Bach. This singer was amazing. When he sang "18 and Life" and "I Remember You" he sounded as as good as Sebastian.

I felt like I was seeing the real Skid Row. The band sounded better than ever.Towards the end of the set, they played a few new songs. The crowd seemed to love these songs as much as the old songs. This made me very hopeful for the future of the band. Even with the loss of members, they have managed to continue and get better. Overall, the show was great. The singer was amazing. His vocals were so clear, I couldn't believe he was actually singing live. I look forward to seeing Skid Row again.

This concert was awesome! All of the bands that played were great. I hadn't been to a concert recently so I went to see Skid Row with a friend of mine. At the Starland Ballroom. Skid Row was the best it was my first time seeing the new lead singer with the band. You did a great show! I checked their tour dates and they've heading overseas for a while. Hope to see Skid Row again sometime in the future. David

Fantastic! Energetic, great vocals, acoustics well balanced. Animated. My only complaint is I was front center, rocking out like a tornado in a trailer park, but the lead singer rarely lingered in middle. He was at one side or the other, as were the others. Felt invisible. No connection. I can have that at a large venue. Aside from that, it was a great show.

Skid Row is an awesome band to see live! The jam during Monkey Business with Dave Sabo and Scotti Hill was mad cool, and all five members have endless energy. These guys are clearly doing what they love, and I love seeing them live! Skid Row will forever be the Youth Gone Wild!

The show was awesome. Great set list, basically the whole first 2 albums plus a Ramones song.

New singer is good but not great. It was a little too loud and too much high end so it was a little hard to hear all the solos clearly.Overall, they kicked was and would go again

Venue sucks (Turning Stone Casino). Had a good view from the "Kings Tables" -but, tables, @ a effing Rock & Roll show.. bad enough there's chairs at the stage..

Doors opened @ 8pm.. Got there at 20 min past & SR was already on stage and it was over by 925. Lame.

Skid row did a GREAT job. I was pleasantly surprised because their original lead singer left some BIG shoes to fill. But the new guy has a great voice and is a really great front man. (of course no one will ever be Sebastian). But he totally brought it.

The show was great. The supporting bands were equally as good as Skid Row.

Quireboys rocked the place and the drinking contest on stage was a lovely touch.

Could do with more sellers though located in a better place as very crowded

Awesome show! Hollowstar, Crash Diet, and The Quireboys were on point as well. Engine Rooms is a quality little venue!

This is only a short review cos that’s all that needs to be said!

Dave Sabo’s ‘Euphoric’ Moment on Skid Row Tour Kickoff: Interview

Skid Row launched the fall leg of  The Gang's All Here  tour with Buckcherry  on Thursday at the House of Blues in Dallas. You can see the set list and videos below.

The latest North American dates come on the heels of an overseas summer run, which included shows opening for Kiss , adding a unique career milestone. “We’re the band that holds the distinction, at least at this point, to play both their first and last farewell tour,” guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo tells UCR with a hearty chuckle.

Snake Sabo's Highlights

Skid Row's 13-song set opened with a pair of cuts from their chart-topping 1991 album  Slave to the Grind , with the thrashy title track followed by the anthemic riff-fest "The Threat." From there, it never let up, but Sabo still has a clear highlight from the night. “It’s the culmination of everything at the end,” he says. “We end every show with ‘Youth Gone Wild.’ That’s just the way it’s always gonna be.”

In that moment, the band witnesses the payoff of each night’s set. “People are embracing what they just experienced, with their hands in the air and smiles on their faces and yelling,” Sabo adds. “That walk off of the stage when you’ve got your arms around your brothers, and you’re like, ‘Man, check that out. We just did that.’ That goes for any scale, the experience. Whether we’re playing a 500-seat club or a 70,000-seat stadium, it’s that moment when you realize you’re all in this together, band and audience. It’s pretty euphoric.”

Touring With Buckcherry

Skid Row is co-headlining this jaunt with Buckcherry, whose raucous hard rock and throwback Sunset Strip sleaze makes for a perfect pairing, Sabo says. “We've known those guys forever,” he says. “As a matter of fact, our old manager, Scott [McGhee], used to manage them for a while going back to the ‘90s. We always thought very, very highly of them. Great energy [and they] always were great guys. Whenever we’d hang out, they were good people — and they’ve got such cool songs.”

A New Era of Skid Row

It’s now been more than a year since Skid Row introduced  new vocalist Erik Gronwall before a run of Las Vegas dates opening for Scorpions . Fan reception has been positive, and Sabo says it’s been a “pretty amazing” experience as Gronwall infuses important energy into the group’s performances. Sabo says Gronwall brings a key component with his approach to their classic catalog as well as material from their newest album, The Gang’s All Here .

“It's about playing the songs and connecting with an audience,” Sabo adds. “In order for that to happen, not only do the songs have to be cool enough where the people can relate to them and react to them, but the people performing them have to be doing it in such a way that it's believable.

“I think from day one, since Erik joined the band, when he came in [and] we had our first rehearsal, which was three days before the first Scorpions show, it's very evident that he was not just singing those lyrics,” Sabo says. "He was embodying those lyrics – and that hasn't changed.”

The Gang’s All Here tour will continue on Friday as Skid Row performs at the annual Rocklahoma festival.

Everything I was expecting!

Concerts are my jam. Days leading up to the show I listened to each bands body of work. All around atmosphere was a better experience for anyone enjoying the show near me! Sierra pilots killed it! Buck Cherry I have waited a long time to see… Check! SKID ROW I mean… Great show! Even got pictures after the show with Erik G outside the tour bus door!

Excellent Soundcheck VIP

Loved their soundcheck VIP. The band made you feel like we were all friends. Chatted with us and played 3 songs for a small group of 30. Felt like our own small concert. They are so welcoming. After this meet we left and returned in the evening for the concert itself. A great concert! Sound was excellent. Will be going to see them again.

Fantastic show

Skid Row was a fabulously, energetic show! I would go again.

It was good

The bands were great. Seats were good. Some people were just a little drunk and out of control beside us. Spilling drinks and food all over the next couple beside us. They should have been removed.

Could have been longer sets

I kind of wished that Sierra Pilot was skipped so that both Buckcherry and Skid Row played longer sets

Great concert

Sierra Pilot was a great starter loosing all the rafters for Buckcherry to stretch the roof out! So much energy from these two alone. When Skid Row came on and did 18 and life the new lead singer Erik Gronwall did not disappoint! Great show with lots if energy! I would definitely see them again.

New singer pretty good

Songs sound very close to original, singer sounds close and they made a good choice picking him

Did not disappoint

Was awesome all around. Even the opener for the opener, buck cherry was awesome. Was a great show…the only regret I had was that I should have bought the floor seats!!! Fantastic show guys. Still rockin it after all these years. Amazing!!

Buckcherry never disappoints and Skid row was amazing!

I really enjoyed it including my mom the first band Sierra pilot was okay but didn't really care for them but buckcherry and skid row were really awesome but otherwise concert was good

Sebastian Bach on ‘Skid Row’ at 30, Why He’s Still Hoping for a Reunion

By Sarah Grant

In the summer of ’89, Bon Jovi were riding high on so much Garden State gratitude after the success of Slippery When Wet that they named their follow-up LP after their home state. The New Jersey tour would, appropriately, give a leg up to their local friends in the warm-up slot — a hard-rock band from Tom’s River called Skid Row .

“I don’t think anyone thought we would be successful,” says the band’s former frontman Sebastian Bach . But that year, dramatic ballads like “I Remember You” and “18 and Life” would help that little opening band go five times platinum.

This fall, a pair of dueling tours will honor the 30th anniversary of Skid Row’s self-titled debut, recently reissued in a deluxe, digital-only version. There’s the Skid Row tour, featuring original members Dave “Snake” Sabo, Rachel Bolan, and Scotti Hill, playing the songs they wrote. Then, on a different run, kicking off August 29th and running through November, fans will get to hear those songs sung by the voice that made them famous.

This past June, in a last-ditch ploy for a reunion, the singer addressed his old band directly on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation : “I have an open invitation out to any of those guys, if they would like to get onstage and jam.” Aside from original drummer Rob Affuso , who’s no longer in the band, Skid Row have yet to respond.

“Don’t hold your breath,” Bach tells Rolling Stone. Bach isn’t even mentioned on the band’s official bio page and Bach says they haven’t spoken in 23 years, when he was fired — a claim that Sabo disputes. “ I saw him about nine years ago when I was managing Duff McKagan,” the guitarist tells Rolling Stone via email. “Duff and his band had a show at the Viper Room and Sebastian showed up with his girlfriend. It was brief and cordial at best. Definitely not momentous.”

The idea of a reunion has been on the table before. “We were close to reuniting maybe two years ago, or a year ago or something like that, but then it didn’t happen,” Bach says. “The fact that it didn’t happen obviously makes me somewhat bitter, because life is only getting shorter, as the song says.”

“I wouldn’t say ‘came close,'” Bolan tells Rolling Stone in an email in response to Bach’s account of the reunion talks. “We entertained the idea. Snake and I went as far as talking with agents and promoters about money. But we quickly learned after a few text conversations, why we fired him in the first place. Nothing is worth your happiness and peace of mind.”

“It was already a miserable experience and we didn’t even get on the phone,” Sabo adds via email.

Since his exit from the band in 1996, Bach has bounced among VH1 reality shows, Gilmore Girls , and Broadway. He spent four years writing his tome of a memoir . These days, the singer known as Baz remains as jovial and talkative as he was in the band’s heyday — a native Canadian who still speaks like a surf bro. Even talk of the ongoing Skid Row cold war doesn’t get him down.

“If I haven’t seen somebody in 23 years, my inclination is to think of the good things, not bad things,” he says. “We’re going to die, you know? You only got one life.”

Bach spoke to RS about what he’s learned from the Skid Row saga, his initial brush with stardom, what inspired his dramatic vocal style, his newfound obsession with Steely Dan, and more.

Any luck in your open call to reunite Skid Row this year? No [ laughs ]. How much fun was it for me to say, “Yeah, it’s going to be great! Sony Theater, New York!” And … nothing.

Not even a text? Not even an angry text? No, we don’t do that. We don’t communicate. We’re like the Creedence Clearwater [Revival] of glam metal.

Do you think they’re offended that you put it out there publicly? Like, putting the fate of a Skid Row reunion in their court? No. I think it’s an ego thing. They don’t like when I get attention, and they don’t get attention. It’s always been like that. I can already see them getting mad, because I’m selling out shows, and they’re not part of the show, and blah, blah, blah.

So, congratulations on the 30th-anniversary deluxe edition of Skid Row that just came out on Spotify. Well, I have no idea how it came about. I was not involved in it. Nobody’s bothered to send it to me. But I know it includes a live show from 1989. I cringe when I try to imagine what I’m saying, because I used to get quite long-winded in between songs back then.

I believe one of the first words you say is “motherfuckers.” Really? Maybe one day I’ll have the guts to check it out.

Billie Eilish Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

A private school promised to help troubled kids. instead, some say, it was a nightmare.

The live part ends with you doing “Cold Gin.” I wondered if that came from you, since I know you’re a big Ace Frehley fan. I had nothing at all, whatsoever, to do with the digital file that was released. I learned about it by reading the press release. If I had anything to do with the 30th-anniversary release of the Skid Row record, it would have been a record — 180 gram remastered from the original source tapes. Then complete with versions of the home videos. I have all the videos that they made Oh Say Can You Scream from, which was a platinum-selling home video release. I have all the singles, audio tapes. Live concerts that we used to record on Bon Jovi tours and the Aerosmith tours. They’re all sitting in a box in my house, collecting dust.

Do you have plans to release any of it? Well, that would require communication with the other band members. I don’t know why I’m holding onto it all.

I’m surprised putting together the digital reissue didn’t spur some sort of conversation along those lines. Especially since so many Seventies and Eighties bands are starting to put out deluxe physical reissues. It’s a shame. Like, I’m a huge Rush fan. When I get one of their reissues, it’s complete with Neil Peart’s itinerary of interviews that day. It comes with the left spoke of the tire from the tour bus. I hope someday we can do that for our fans.

Our tapes, by the way, for the first Skid Row record, are missing. I don’t know if it was the fire that they went missing in, but back when they did the Best of Skid Row record, they tried to remaster some songs, remix some songs, and Michael Wagener, the producer, told me nobody could locate the master tapes of the first Skid Row record. Everybody looked. Nobody seems to know where they are. So there’s a mystery out there.

So, looking at the bigger picture, what would it take for a Skid Row reunion? What do you need to hear from them? It would take those guys to realize that I have a lifetime manager. His name is Rick Sales. I’ve been with him since 2006. They don’t want to deal with a guy like that. They want to give some singer who doesn’t have a manager $700 to $800 bucks a week. I’ve got a team that’s worked with me and don’t allow me to get fucked around. I didn’t have that team when I was 19 years old.

[ Editor’s Note: In response to Bach’s statements about the earnings of Skid Row’s singer, Sabo writes: “I guess fact-checking isn’t in his skill set. … The five of us go on that stage as a band and we all get paid equally. We’re in this together. There’s no egos.”]

You feel you didn’t know how to protect yourself back then, legally. After it ended, I was all on my own. I had to start over again. I’m never going through that again. I’m too old for that.

There’s only one song on the first Skid Row album that you have an actual co-write on: “Makin’ a Mess.” You have to understand, I was maybe 18, 19 years old. There were a million bands. Very few of them actually made it. I had no clue when I was, say, rewriting the melody line of “18 and Life” — I had no concept of what that meant down the line. I mean, I learned later on in life. But I didn’t know, man … I was just a kid. The rest of the band members were four years older, at least, and I just didn’t understand what I was getting myself into. Which was also evident by my behavior at the time.

The irony is we always got into fights about business. So I made a decision that I’m never talking business with any guys in any of my bands ever again. But [the members of Skid Row] won’t even deal with [my manager]. And I’m not leaving Rick. So if anybody wants to talk to me, they got to talk to him. If everybody wants to come to the table and talk business, we’re ready to do it. But they don’t like me.

Why do you say that? Hasn’t enough time passed? It’s not like you trashed them in your memoir or cut them out financially. I think they have a real control thing. If you notice, they’ve had a new singer for what, two or three years now? He’s done zero interviews. Well, no wonder they don’t like me. When I’m around, I do the interviews. I’m just saying, they’ve always resented lead singers that get all the attention. That goes back to your magazine, putting me on the cover without them. They didn’t like that very much.

[ Editor’s Note: In response to Bach’s statements above, Bolan writes, of current Skid Row singer ZP Theart, “Hmm, ZP does do interviews and ZP gets plenty of attention. ZP came into this band with his own celebrity and had his own fan base. Any attention Baz gets, is definitely not from Skid Row. I personally couldn’t care less about his career.”]

Do you keep tabs on Skid Row? Have you ever seen them play without you? Only one time on YouTube, a couple singers back. It said “I Remember You,” and I thought it was my band, so I clicked on it, and then I watched it, and I said, “What the fuck? … Oh, my God.”

Well, no one thought Guns N’ Roses would reunite, much less for this long. You’re friends with them. Any lessons from them in how to cope with a situation like this? Yes. Well, lessons would be: Don’t disparage each other in the press, which is so hard to do when websites just look for any sentence and then make that sentence a headline. We all get in trouble all the time, without even trying. It seems to be a confrontation-based culture as far as rock bands go. I never read when I was a kid, oh, “David Lee Roth whooped this guy’s ass.” It’s just like, what the fuck does any of this have to do with music? Nothing. As the years go on, I look at it like stealth is wealth. Stay off the internet as much as possible, because actually I’m too cool for that … [ pauses ] … It’s a big business if they’re talking about reuniting a band like that, whether it’s Poison or Guns N’ Roses.

Those first two Skid Row records mean a lot to people. And the songs have lasted. “I Remember You,” “Youth Gone Wild,” “18 and Life” — 30 years later, they’re still on the radio. How does that sit with you?  That always freaked me out. I remember Rolling Stone did an article called something like “The Top Five Songs of My Life,” or whatever, and it was Norah Jones. Somebody sent me the article, and she picked “I Remember You,” by Skid Row . When she was 11 years old, she told the whole story. You can look it up. It’s your magazine. “Every time I hear this, I get this unbelievable wave of nostalgia. …”

Zoe Kravitz’s first-ever cover song was “I Remember You.” There was a big article in Rolling Stone about it — how her dad helped her pick the song. And I remember hanging out with Lenny years and years ago, him always telling me how he loved that album. There are so many instances of that song having a life of its own.

Carrie Underwood. Anybody who wants to should go to YouTube for her version of the song, which is mindblowing. Then there’s Adam Levine, a great buddy of mine, who chose “I Remember You” for The Voice — which, that would be my voice, thank you [ laughs ]. He chose the song for his team in the finale to sing. I could go on. The single has a life of its own that transcends. There are other songs that sound similar, but for some reason that one just resonates decades and decades later.

I wanted to talk about another big anniversary in 1989. Your first arena show, which was on tour with Bon Jovi, and it was in Dallas. That’s right.

You’re clearly not someone that suffers from a lot of stage fright. But did you really close your eyes that whole performance, as you write in your memoir? I really did, because I couldn’t concentrate on singing and look at the fact that I was in an arena at the same time. I wasn’t mentally prepared for the fact that maybe my dream as a little kid would come true of being a rock star. I couldn’t. I was paralyzed, like Cindy Brady with television-itis . That was me, like, “Oh, my God.” I don’t know what to tell you. There’s a reason why people like being taped onstage. There’s a lot of variables that come into play if you’re trying to sing for an hour or 45 minutes or two hours. Things that come into your head. Distractions and stuff. Audio variables. I don’t know what to tell you. It was all a bit overwhelming for a 19-year-old person to do that for the first time. It was a bit much.

And still, during the span of that tour, you go from that kid who can’t open his eyes, to standing up to an entire stadium, shouting at the Johnstown, New Jersey, police for tasing you before the show. How did that shy kid go into power-tripping rock star mode so fast? You’re full of testosterone. You’re full of piss and vinegar. You’re fucking wild. You feel indestructible. And then you put a kid like that on the stage, with the power of 20,000 people. What can I tell you? Oh, my God. I just got kind of power mad. I got caught up in the energy of the audience.

For some reason, I haven’t been allowed to play all of these rock festivals. There are a million of them. Operation Rock. Heavy Montreal. Rock on the Range. All this stuff. I have played one or two of them, and when I do, look out other bands. That’s the way it’s always been. Because when I get on the stage, and I get caught up in the crowd, I have a vibe and an energy that is different than other frontmen. And I can get a crowd very, very excited. When the day comes that they do allow me on these festival stages, I’ll fucking show you what the fuck I’m talking about.

Let’s go back to making the first Skid Row record. You had been living in Toronto with your girlfriend Maria at the time and she was pregnant with your son. Dave “Snake” Sabo sent you a demo tape. You liked the songs, so you flew out to Tom’s River, New Jersey, where Rachel Bolan lived with his parents. I can remember vividly what you’re talking about. It was in Rachel’s garage.

The only two songs that made it onto the album from that demo were “Youth Gone Wild” and “18 and Life.” So then the other songs, did they give you any creative license? I think “Rattlesnake Shake” might’ve been on that demo … I’m not sure. But no, we all just basically hashed it out in Rachel’s garage. That’s where I heard “I Remember You” for the first time. Then I heard “Piece of Me.” We wrote the song “Makin’ a Mess” together in the TV room in his house. We just rehearsed them so many times, and we recorded them as well in demo studios. In New Jersey — there was a place called House of Music where we recorded 30 songs.

You were the only one who liked “I Remember You,” right?  [Motley Crue’s manager] Doc McGhee came to one rehearsal, which was in the garage. We were going through the set. It was near the end, and I said, “Doc, Doc, you got to hear this song! You got to hear this song, man. They don’t want this on the record, man. You got to fucking hear this song! It’s so fucking great! You got to hear it!” And everybody’s like, “Whatever.” It was an acoustic guitar song. The only song with an acoustic, and he just played it. And I started singing. By the end of the song, I looked over at Doc, and he was laughing. I didn’t know if he thought it was cheesy or too wimpy, but Doc goes, “So you guys don’t want that on the record?” And somebody said, “No, I don’t think it really fits.” And he goes, “That’s funny. It’s on the fucking record.”

What was the argument against it? It was too wimpy and it didn’t fit the image of the tough kid from Jersey. But I don’t want to get this misconstrued into yet another fight somehow, because at the end of the day, it was all five of us that made the song and put it out. It was the number-one prom song of 1990 in USA Today, right up there with “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty.

A lot of millennials were probably conceived to that song. [ Laughs ] I’m glad to be of some assistance.

Why didn’t you guys do any other ballads after that? Well, I don’t know if you would consider “18 and Life” a ballad. But that was released before “Remember You” and was a Top 10 single. It was Number Four. It’s kind of heavy. But [the acoustic guitar] immediately put “I Remember You” into ballad category. Without question.

Skid Row had a knack for pulling off heavy ballads. Charles Mingus said, “There’s only two kinds of music: Good and bad.” I always knew [“I Remember You”] was a good song, man. I just did. I can’t sing a song if I don’t love it. It doesn’t come out right. And I fell in love with it immediately when I heard it and when I started singing it. I just loved it, and I still do, 30 years later.

When you heard that song and you were singing it, you were thinking about Maria? At the time I was, yeah.

Why do you sound so angry at the end? All the emotion that you hear on the vocal there is a father leaving his kid just on a dream, and basically saying, “Well, I’m going to give this everything I’ve got.” And you hear when I’m singing it — there’s a desperation there. It affected me when my dad left me when I was a kid, and I swore to God I’d never do that. And then here I was doing it. So that’s what you hear in the scream at the end. I’ve always been the kind of vocalist where I think of the words and the meaning really comes out in my singing. And that’s how I know when I’m doing it right. Really delivering the words. I learned that on that record, really. That song is where I learned how to do that.

How did you make “18 and Life” your own? I just thought, “Can I do this?” [ Sings lyrics ] “Blew the child away …,” “fingers to the bone … ” — I added all of those different kinds of high-pitched screams, and people really liked when I was doing that. So I just kept doing that.

Today, are you on good or bad terms with the Bon Jovi guys? I’m on good terms with them. I saw Richie in Vegas. We did a song together with Dee Snider onstage for a charity thing. Before, a couple years back in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jon, Richie, and I killed about 10 bottles of wine [ laughs ]. I haven’t seen Jon in a while, but we were definitely having a great time the last time I saw him.

Can you explain to me why Jon Bon Jovi collects royalties from Skid Row’s debut album? Because he helped us out. He took us on the road for the whole New Jersey  tour, and we signed what was called a production deal at the time, which gave him a cut of the proceeds if we were successful. The last thing anybody ever thought would happen. But actually we were quite successful. It wasn’t exactly an overnight success. It took at least two weeks. On the road with him, it was a quick rise.

You don’t seem bothered that he still gets a cut. Some people say [Jon Bon Jovi] got overcompensated. But as years go by, I look at the chance we were given, and most likely, we never would have made it without going on that tour.

That’s a very diplomatic answer. Yeah. But we were also given Bon Jovi’s accountant, a guy by the name of Bruce Colgretter, if you really want to get into the nitty-gritty. That was [ pauses, laughs ] very handy.

Do you get royalties from the first Skid Row album? Yes, I absolutely do. I get performance royalties.

If you were rewriting melodies of hits like “18 and Life,” shouldn’t you also get publishing royalties? I’ve been told many, many times by far smarter businessmen than me, that yes, I should. It’s just that, to be honest, getting bogged down in a legal fight like that would just take so much energy. As I get older, I choose to put that energy into making as much content for fans as I can while I’m still able to do so. That includes doing a tour with no back-end tape, still doing it live, old school, which is a rarity these days. My next thing will be a record. It took all my energy for four years to write that book, 18 and Life on Skid Row .

It’s the same impulse that I have about our current president, who drives me insane to the point of being depressed. I want to express this on Twitter, and I have expressed it, many times. But then who wants to be that voice? There’s enough people talking about miserable stuff all the time, and I just don’t want to be miserable.

How are you managing to achieve that? I’m concentrating, really, on my health and exercising. For the first time in my life I’m trying to eat right, which is crazy.

Really? How are you doing that? How am I doing that specifically? Well, my wife makes me spicy veggie brats. No meat. And I’m starting to fit into the little, itty-bitty T-shirts again, which mocked me in my closet. Thousands of them! I’m like, “I’m going to fit in those fucking cool shirts, again, man.” I’m happy to say it’s going well.

Do you still run seven miles? Well, it’s actually four miles, but Mick Jagger, what the hell is going on with that guy?

Seriously.  Mick Jagger is an inspiration. As far as having that much energy, looking that cool, fronting the band the way he does at his age. It’s astonishing. If you Google his regimen, it says when he’s getting ready to go on tour, the weeks leading up to tour, he actually runs 10 miles a day. I find that hard to believe that it’s true, because that takes a long time to run.

I also am very inspired by my friend Duff McKagan, who introduced me to the hot yoga.

That sounds intense. It’s brutal. I was like, “Dude, how do you look like that?” [Duff] goes, “Meet me at nine in the morning at this address.” I go, “Nine in the morning?!” I got there, and I did it with him, and I’ve been working on it ever since. It’s very … trippy.

So what do you listen to on a long run? You won’t be ready for the answer. I listen to Donald Fagen. Solo career. The Nightfly  blew my mind. I have every record.  Kamakiriad .  Morph the Cat.

You’re right, I did not see that coming. Look, I like my metal fucking loud, dude. But my hearing means even more to me. A couple years ago, my doctor told me, “Sebastian, your ears are fine. But if you don’t start turning it down now, 10 years from now you’ll wish you would have.” So when I turned down the volume, it changed what music I put on. I have a huge vinyl collection. I have different stereos in different rooms of different levels of quality. I immediately started listening to a lot of Steely Dan.

I love Steely Dan, but I have to say I’m not that familiar with Fagen’s solo music.  Oh, my God. Just get ready for The Nightfly . It will become your favorite album if you like that kind of music. Yacht rock. I have every record. Those albums, for an audiophile, are just so listenable. They’re incredibly good.

So, lastly, it going to be painful for you to spend the next few months fielding Skid Row reunion questions? You clearly want it to happen. I have to compartmentalize. There’s nothing that I like about the current situation with the band. But I can’t change the way other people are or what they do. I just know that for me, I can’t be mad at somebody I haven’t been in a room with in 23 years.

Michael McDowell leaving Front Row to drive for Spire

  • Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Shortly after Michael McDowell said Wednesday he would not return to Front Row Motorsports after this season, Spire Motorsports announced it had signed the former Daytona 500 winner to a multiyear contract.

McDowell will drive the No. 71 Chevrolet for Spire starting next season. He will be teamed with Corey LaJoie and Carson Hocevar at Spire.

"This is a new chapter for my family and me, and we're incredibly thankful for the opportunity that's in front of us," McDowell said. "It's going to take some hard work, but I feel like everything is in place for us to be successful as a race team -- to win races and contend for championships.

"People are the greatest asset to any organization, and with Spire's vision, ambition, knowledge and dedication, we will achieve great things. Failure is not an option, and that's the mindset that it will take to achieve our goals."

McDowell, 39, has been with Front Row Motorsports since 2018. He won the Daytona 500 in 2021 and last year's Cup race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course while driving the No. 34 Ford for Front Row.

McDowell has made 228 of his 477 career Cup starts with the organization. He has scored eight of his nine career top-five finishes and 35 of his 40 career top 10s while at Front Row Motorsports.

"Over half of my NASCAR Cup Series starts have been made under the FRM banner, and I'm thankful for each and every one of them," McDowell said. "With that being said, my family and I have made the bittersweet decision that it's time for us to embark on the next chapter of our motorsports journey, making 2024 my final season as the driver of the No. 34 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Front Row Motorsports."

Team owner Bob Jenkins thanked McDowell for his contributions to the organization and said his wins at Daytona and Indy -- both of which earned McDowell playoff berths -- "set a new standard for our organization.

"He became the leader of his team and the organization. Outside the car, he was the model for a driver we want to represent us and our partners," Jenkins said. "We're sad to see Michael leave, but wish him, Jami and his family nothing but the best as he moves on to another chapter of what is already an incredible racing career."

McDowell won the pole at Atlanta and Talladega this year and started on the front row for the Daytona 500. He crashed while defending his lead coming to the checkered flag at Talladega, one of a series-high four races he failed to finish this year.

He is 26th in the Cup standings entering Sunday's race at Darlington Raceway.

San francisco giants at colorado rockies odds, picks and predictions, share this article.

The San Francisco Giants (16-21) and Colorado Rockies (8-27) play the 2nd game of a 3-game series Wednesday. First pitch from Coors Field is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Giants vs. Rockies odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Giants lead 1-0

The Giants snapped a 4-game skid with a 5-0 victory in the series opener Tuesday. Starting LHP Kyle Harrison  allowed only 4 hits in 7 innings, and a 4-run 4th inning was all San Francisco needed.

The Rockies lost their 3rd game in a row and are 1-8 in their last 9.

Giants at Rockies projected starters

RHP Jordan Hicks vs. RHP Peter Lambert

Hicks (2-1, 1.89 ERA) makes his 8th start. He has a 1.03 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 7.1 K/9 in 38 innings.

  • Last start: Loss, 4 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 4 H, 4 BB, 3 K in 4-3 road loss to Philadelphia Phillies Friday
  • Allowed 2 or fewer runs in 1st 6 starts

Lambert (2-1, 5.66 ERA) makes his 3rd start and 10th appearance. He has a 1.50 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9 and 7.8 K/9 in 20 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 3 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K in 5-4 road loss to Miami Marlins Thursday
  • 10 ER in 6 1/3 IP as an opener this season (2 starts)

  • Moneyline (ML) : Giants -165 (bet $165 to win $100) | Rockies +140 (bet $100 to win $140)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Giants -1.5 (-110) | Rockies +1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 9.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Giants at Rockies picks and predictions

Giants 6, Rockies 3

The Giants (-165) have the pitching advantage in this matchup. Hicks, excluding his last start, has been very difficult to score runs off of, while Lambert has been knocked around a little in his previous 2 appearances as an opener.

The Rockies are 0-2 in Lambert’s 2 starts.

However, the Giants have lost Hicks’ last 4 starts, despite him allowing only 6 earned runs in 20 innings.

The Rockies have been held to a total of 6 runs in their last 4 games.

The Giants have the edge here, but there is a better bet than the -165 on the moneyline.

Run line/Against the spread

Eight of the Giants’ last 9 wins have been by multiple runs.

Two of the Rockies’ last 4 losses and 3 of the last 6 have been by only 1 run, but 19 of their 29 losses overall have been by more than 1 run.

Their last 6 home losses have been by 2 or more runs.

BET GIANTS -1.5 ( -110 ).

Only 2 of the Giants’ last 15 games have had a total of more than 9 runs.

The Rockies’ last 6 games have stayed under 11 total runs.

Eight of the last 14 games between them, including last year, did not reach 10 runs.

BET UNDER 9.5 ( -105 ).
