A Day Trip in Seoraksan National Park

Seoraksan National Park - Geumganggul Cave

Situated in northeast Korea in the Gangwon-do Province is the incredible and gorgeous Seoraksan National Park. Seoraksan translates to Seorak Mountain, and it’s the most popular mountain in the Taebaek Mountain range and one of the most popular of South Korea’s national parks.

Not only does this park offer hikes for any level of expertise, but if offers some of the most beautiful sceneries of Korea. After living in South Korea for over two and a half years, Seoraksan National Park is still one of our favorite destinations in the country.

This is a place that you can find your fill of outdoor activities to make it worthwhile for a worthwhile day trip to Seroaksan National Park or an extended stay.

How to Get To Seoraksan National Park

Seoraksan National Park Entrance

Whether you’re coming for a day trip to Seoraksan National Park or a few days trip, getting here could be tricky if you’re not familiar with how Korean transportation works. The most popular entrance to Seoraksan National Park is through Sokcho.

How to Get to Seoraksan National Park  from Seoul

views in Seoraksan National Park

The bus ride is around 2.5 hours which could be longer if you get stuck in Seoul traffic.

From Sokcho’s bus terminal you will go outside and take Bus 7 or 7-1 to Seorak-dong. This will drop you off to the Outer Seorak entrance to the park near the Seoraksan cable car and all the best things to do in Seoraksan National Park.

If you have any trouble, they do have an English-speaking information area to help you. Seoraksan is one of the most popular hikes for Koreans and tourists, so they’re used to many visitors!

Of course, if you book a tour from Seoul, you don’t have to worry about any of this as they’ll take care of transportation and you can just enjoy the trip.

The entrance to the park has gift shops, small restaurants, and places where you can buy some corn makgeolli and dong dong ju for your hike! Be sure to hike like a local and grab a makgeolli to go, makgeolli has tons of health benefits!

See how we recommend visiting during a day trip to Seoraksan National Park or things you have to do in Seoraksan National Park even if you’re staying longer!

Things to See in Seoraksan National Park in a Day

Seoraksan cable car.

Seoraksan National Park Cable Car in Korea

Want to experience the easiest way to enjoy a view from the majestic summits of Seoraksan National Park in South Korea? Be sure to head straight to the Seoraksan cable car for an easy and scenic ride to the summit up nearly 2300 feet where you can enjoy the incredible views from the craggy mountain range.

This is great for the soft adventure types as you don’t have to do too much physical activity to enjoy the Seoraksan cable car.

The Seoraksan cable car is just about a 3 minute walk from the entrance of the park. If you’re planning on enjoying the Seoraksan cable car it is essential that you go buy your tickets for the cable car first.  These tickets sell out quickly or you might only be able to snag tickets in the earliest time slot which might be way later in the day.

The Seoraksan cable car runs from 9 am to 6 pm daily and costs 10,000 won for adults and 6,000 won for children.

If you don’t want to haul all your goodies up to the top you can store your belongings at a locker at the Seoraksan cable car lower platform. These are 500 KRW.

The Seoraksan cable cars leave every 5 minutes and can fit up to 50 people per ride. The ride itself is six minutes long and displays heavenly views of Seoraksan National Park and the nearby mountains. We were visiting in mid-May and loved the lush green foliage against the blue skies.

Once you get to the top of the rocky mountain there is about a 5-10 minute hike up to the peak which is known as Gwongeumseong Fortress, the former site of a castle.

The views are incredible and this hike is very easy. People of all ages were here. Even ladies looking cute wearing high heels.

There are no other hikes up here, just a place to enjoy a view.

If you don’t manage to snag a ticket for the Seoraksan cable car early in the day you can always fill up your day trip to Seoraksan National Park with these other activities until it’s your time. Also, if you don’t get a ticket, all is not lost as there are so many more incredible things to do in Seoraksan National Park.

Sinheungsa Temple

Bronze Jwabul Buddha in Seoraksan National Park in Korea

One of the next easiest things to see in Seoraksan National Park is the unmissable giant bronze Buddha known as Tongil Daebul tower at 62 feet high at the Sinheungsa Temple. This is located only about a 10 minutes walk from the entrance of Seoraksan National Park. This is easily one of the most famous sites inside of Seoraksan National Park.

This is a zen temple where Korean Buddhists worship. This temple is said to be the oldest Zen Temple in the world dating back to the year 653. Within the first 50 years of its erection, the temple burnt to the ground and was rebuilt about a decade after where you see the current building today.

There is a bridge that leads to the main buildings of the temple and is totally worth exploring.

Biseondae Rocks

Easily one of our favorite things to do in Seoraksan National Park and a must on any day trip to Seoraksan National Park is hike to the Biseondae Rocks. This is a great hike for beginners and all hiking levels including children.

The hike is flat and starts to the left after Sinheungsa Temple near the entrance and is around a 2km walk and will take around 30-40 minutes depending on your speed.

You’ll pass three different rest places to eat a meal or enjoy a drink. At the third restaurant, you will know you have reached Biseondae Rocks.

You can always continue hiking, you can hike up to 8 km of Biseondae, but if you’re doing just a day trip to Seoraksan National Park you might run into some timing issues if you try to go too much further. We found this to be a great spot to bring our packed lunch and drink our makgeolli or dine at the third restaurant that you just passed to get here which serves up great Korean pancakes.

This Seoraksan hike is really gorgeous and relaxing. Not only do you see the picturesque mountains but there is a rocky stream that lines the entire path.

This is what we liked the most because of the cascading blue pools of water known as the fairy pools. We took full advantage of the larger rocks as a place to rest and sit in the sun.

This has to be the highlight of our day trip to Seoraksan National Park because we took a chance to really relax and enjoy the gorgeous surrounding. Even on a busy day in the park, you can find a quiet alone spot here.

Geumganggul Cave

Seoraksan National Park - Geumganggul Cave

Over 600 Steep Steps!

Geumganggul Cave is about another 45-minute hike past Biseondae Rocks depending on your fitness level and is another one of the most incredible sights to fit in your day trip to Seoraksan National Park. This hike is not long, but if you are walking up a lot of stone steps and steep stairs pretty much the entire time.

We are going to warn you, this is a leg burner! Situated 600 meters (1,969 ft.) from the ground is a tiny cave with a small place to worship Buddha.

This cave could not fit more than 15 people and gets crowded even with six people visiting at once. There is a lady inside who manages the place and may offer you a slice of fruit after your journey up all the steps! If you notice alot of people going up to the cave just be aware that you might have to wait on the steep ladder until they leave to make room for you.

Caution: This is not a good hike if you are scared of heights. Photographed above is the view from Geumganggul Cave you can see how steep it is. You might have to wait on the ladder type steps waiting for your turn to enter. If you don’t feel comfortable with that you might want to skip this thing to do in Seoraksan National Park.

The view is absolutely breathtaking from here. You get a nice view of the Cheonuldong Valley where you can see the stream of rocks against the thick, green mountains. It’s easily one of the best views in Seoraksan National Park.

Allow for around 90 minutes of walking to get back to the Seoraksan cable car area and entrance if you’re planning on still going back for a later cable car ride.

Biryong Falls

Another popular hike for a day trip to Seoraksan National Park is Biryong Falls. We actually didn’t fit this in our visit because we just couldn’t fit everything. If you want to see this waterfall you might have to skip one other thing unless you’re doing more than a day trip to Seoraksan.

The hike takes anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours depending on your fitness level and is 5 km long. You won’t have viewpoint views of mountain peaks, but that’s what the other hikes and cable car are for!

The waterfall is pretty small to be honest and we only really recommend visiting if you do have ample time, otherwise, we think the other things to do in Seoraksan National Park are better.

Autumn in Seoraksan National Park in Korea

Another one of the most popular hikes and things to do in Seoraksan National Park is hike Ulsanbawi. You will have to plan your timing right if you’re doing a day trip to Seoraksan National Park as this hike takes 3-4 hours to complete and is 8 km in distance.

This is a popular hike among day trippers because you get amazing views without having to do an overnight hike in the park. From the peak you can see views as far as Sokcho as well as more gorgeous mountains and the coastline.

This hike is pretty easy and flat until the very last bit which involves going up almost 900 stairs to reach the peak.

Hajodae Beach in Korea

Even if you don’t want to do something quite that challenging, there are a lot of things to do in Sokcho itself that don’t involve exercise. That’s also where we recommend staying overnight since it’s closeby.

If you want to do more East Coast Korea exploring we also recommend checking out Naksan Beach where you can swim, hike, and enjoy our favorite Korean beach.

Just further south along the coast is also Hajodae Beach , another gorgeous beach with turquoise water and a lesser-known gem to travelers in Korea!

Don’t want to try and figure out your day trip to Seoraksan National Park all on your own? We don’t blame you. Figuring out travel in a new country can be confusing unless you’re familiar or maybe you are going solo and want to make some new friends on a group tour.

We highly recommend all three tours below, keep in mind some of these only run in the autumn.

Seoraksan in Autumn Tours

A gorgeous seasonal tour for a day tour to Seoraksan National Park from Seoul in autumn is this great tour. This tour runs every day of the week except for Saturdays and is around 12 hours total from start to finish in Seoul. The group tour will be sure to take you to the most scenic spots for fall foliage and the best spots in the park.

Seoraksan Tours (All Season)

This last 12 hour day tour to Seoraksan National Park operates all seasons. This tour is a bit more unique and offers a visit to the Baeksam Valley where you will visit a Buddhist temple and explore the park. After you will also visit one of our favorite Buddhist temples right outside Seoraksan National Park in Naksan Beach. Naksansa Temple is over 1,300 years old and overlooks the sea in one direction and in the other you see the Seoraksan mountain range. Like the other tours, this one starts and ends in Seoul.

Seoraksan & Naksansa – The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul?

Naksansa Pavilion

If you are spending more than a few days in Korea, make sure that you don’t just explore Seoul. Seoul is a wonderful city, and I love it. However, there is so much more to Korea that is also worth exploring!

The best upside of Korea being such a small country is that you can easily travel. The longest trip you can take in Korea is Seoul to Busan, which takes 5-6 hours by bus. Even compared to a small country like New Zealand, that’s quite short!

From Seoul, you can find stunning beaches just a few hours away . You can also find breathtaking mountains that show the fall beauty of Korea !

There are a lot of fantastic day trips from Seoul and I highly recommend checking them out. If you are looking to escape from Seoul for a day or two, check out Ktourstory , Klook and Trazy . They all offer some fantastic day trips.

The tour that I am discussing today is the day trip to Seoraksan & Naksansa by Ktourstory. My trip was sponsored by them, however, all opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Day Trip to Seoraksan & Naksansa

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 1

The tail-end of fall on Seoraksan.

The tour starts the same as most tours from Seoul – from your choice of Hongdae, Myeongdong, or Dongdaemun History and Culture Park. Pickups usually start at Hongdae at around 7:20 am and then proceed to Myeongdong at 8 and Dongdaemun at 8:10.

These three stops mean that the trip is convenient for most tourists to Korea as they cover the most popular accommodation areas.

At around 11 am the bus will reach Seoraksan. There are a few restaurants located around the stop which will allow you to refuel if needed! The tour will stay at Seoraksan for a few hours until 2 pm. This gives you some time to explore the mountain and to visit some of the vistas on the mountain.

At 2 pm, the bus will depart for Naksansa. Naksansa is a Buddhist temple located on the coast very near Seoraksan. It’s a mere 15-minute drive from the mountain. The bus will arrive around 2:50 and will stay at Naksansa until 4:20 when it will depart for Seoul.

You can expect to be home around 7-8 pm depending on which stop you decided to go from. Drop-offs will begin at Dongdaemun before proceeding towards Myeongdong, and finally, Hongdae.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 2

The stream on the way to Biseondae.

Seoraksan is the first stop on the journey and probably the reason that most people are on this tour!

Seoraksan is South Korea’s third tallest mountain and is the tallest mountain in the north of the country (the north of South Korea that is!). The peak is just over 1,700 metres tall and as such, it is considered one of South Korea’s most famous mountains.

The mountain is a national park and takes up a large area in South Korea’s north-east. There are a lot of different peaks and walks that can be done, and there are also many different difficulties of hikes on the mountain.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 3

The Kakao Friends icons represent the most popular areas reachable within the time limit.

Since the tour stops there for around 3 hours, you will have a few different choices of path. I chose to visit Biseondae rocks , a famous rock formation on the mountain that is about 45 minutes to one hour each way.

If you would prefer not to hike, then you are in luck. There is also a cable car station that provides rides to another of Seoraksan’s peaks. This cable car goes from the parking lot (where the bus will stop). However, the cable car price is not included in the tour cost, so remember to keep that in mind.

The walk to Biseondae is very beautiful and one of the nicest paths I have had the pleasure of walking in Korea. After the first 15 minutes of the walk, the path follows a river up towards the Biseondae rocks.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 4

The stream-side path is quite stunning.

The river provides some pretty views as well as providing the calming sound of water while you walk. I visited on a Saturday and the paths were not crowded at all – it was a very pleasant walk.

The Biseondae rocks themselves are quite a sight to behold! A bridge crosses the stream and there are rocky peaks on either side of the path. It is a very unique view and something that can only be found on Seoraksan.

Not only the view at the top is beautiful, however. The path also has a lot of scenic points where you can view the river flowing next to the track. The whole path to the top is a very scenic walk and I was quite happy with my choice of path.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to explore other paths while I was there. However, from the images that I have seen, they all have their own splendour and beauty.

Overall, Seoraksan is a stunning place. I wish I had got to visit a few weeks earlier when the fall foliage was in full swing, however, it was still a trip that I am very happy to have been a part of.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 5

The coastal temple makes for quite the view!

Just a short drive from Seoraksan lies one of Korea’s most beautiful temples. Naksansa is located on the east coast of Korea and looks out over the East Sea. This temple is truly a stunning place!

Naksansa is over 1300 years old and it has a lot of history to explore . The temple is most famous for its coastal location. However, it is also famous for its Guan Yin statue with stands at 15 metres tall. This statue is the tallest of its kind in the Orient.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 6

Map of Naksansa. It’s all easily explorable in the time provided!

With about an hour and a half provided to explore the temple, it’s easy to explore the whole area and to be able to spend some time taking in the views. The temple can be fully explored in 30 minutes or so, and this allows for some time to revisit your favourite places or to relax.

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 7

The coast below the temple.

The temple has a few pavilions located along the cliff face, and this makes it a truly unique temple in Korea.

A lot of Koreans come to the temple to pray to the Guan Yin statue which sits on the top of the cliffs. This statue stands looking southeast and it is definitely a sight to behold, no matter what your beliefs.

Another fantastic way to experience Naksansa is to do a temple stay. Check out the Naksansa Temple Stay here.

My Experiences

When I was initially offered the tour I was most excited for Naksansa. Simply Googling the temple showed some stunning images – I was really amazed at how beautiful this temple was.

I went into the trip with expectations that Naksansa would be the biggest attraction for me. After all, the photos of it had been stunning and they were what tempted me to go on the trip.

However, Seoraksan wasn’t to be outclassed and it pleasantly surprised me with its natural beauty. Coming from a country like New Zealand, I am rather accustomed to nature and I often think that I don’t need to see it again.

I was definitely wrong. Nature in oriental countries is not only very unique and different but, it is in a breathtaking way. Seoraksan surprised me with its views and sights and I am glad that I got the opportunity to explore at least a little part of the mountain.

No matter where you come from, nature in Korea is not only beautiful but also unique. There are a lot of mountains in Korea to explore and there is no mountain that I can recommend over the others. Each one stands out in its own way.

Tour Review

Seoraksan & Naksansa - The Most Beautiful Day-trip from Seoul? 8

Biseondae at Seoraksan

As my second tour with Ktourstory I went in expecting a quality tour that would show me some of the sights of Korea. I wasn’t disappointed.

The tour guide was not only fluent in English, Korean and Chinese, but also very knowledgeable on the areas and friendly. The bus ride was decent and I enjoyed the freedom that the tour provided at the locations.

If you are looking for a good tour operator within Korea than I would recommend Ktourstory . The customer service is efficient and fast and the tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable.

If you are looking for a fantastic way to get out of Seoul (or just to explore the Korean countryside) then make sure to check out this day trip to Seoraksan and Naksansa. You can purchase tour tickets here .

Here, you will feel truly at peace. The national park is quite large. In fact, it’s geography spans across four cities and counties! There are about 30 different peaks in the park which make the views very diverse. Lovers of nature scenes and photography will thoroughly enjoy this area! As we get to Mount Seorak, we will use the Cable Car to make our way up. While named after the Gwongeumseong Fortress, the fortress itself is actually in ruins, so there are only a few rocks that remain.

Once you reach the main viewpoint, you will be able to see Seorak Mountain and the East Sea towards which we will make our way the following day during our visit to Naksan Beach. The cable car experience is both thrilling and very cozy!

Shinheungsa Temple – a Zen marvel settled in idyllic natural scenery

Looking at Sinheungsa temple with its beautiful colors standing out in the middle of Seorak Mountain

Situated on the sloped of Mount Seoraksan, this is one of the most important temples in history, dating all the way back to the Jogye Order. The temple was built by Jajang in 653 and is a true piece of history that has survived through millennia! You will have the chance to see the bronze Buddha statue outside and take photos with it. At 18.9 meters high and weighing 108 tons, this is a truly impressive monument!

The blue roof of the temple really stands out against the mountainous background which is either blooming in spring or covered in snow in winter. The view will give you a real sense of comfort and peace.

If you love splendid natural views and would like to do some hiking as well, check out our Bukhansan tour !

Daepohang Port – taste the best of the sea world

Red crab fried rice dished up and ready to serve at Daepohang market

Do you love great local food? Then you would very much enjoy Daepohang Port! This is something of a foodie hotspot where you can find fresh fish to take home or buy meals prepared on the spot. The cool thing about the fish market is that everything has been caught recently. You can point to the fish you like after which the vendor will kill and pack for you. It doesn’t get fresher than this!

When it comes to meals ready to consume, you will find many stalls offering lobster fried rice, shrimp tempura, makgeolli, soup, kimchi, crab, squid, and more. Navigating the market is very easy. The vendors are very friendly and extremely helpful, ready to answer any of your questions.

Naksansa Temple – discover a spiritual place nestled in a gorgeous cliff

Naksansa temple sitting in front of the sea on a cloudy day

Naksansa Temple is a complex of temples built by the Jogye Order, overlooking the East Sea. The temple has more than 1,300 years worth of history and is beautifully designed in a way that flows with nature perfectly. You will enter through the Hongyaemun Gate that is lined with black bamboo trees. There is a path that leads to Uisangdae Pavilion which is perched on top of a cliff and is an excellent spot for meditation and relaxation.

Right next to it, you will see Hongryeonam which is a smaller temple. Here, you will find a hole which is about ten centimeters wide. You can peep through it and get a glimpse of the sea! Next to the pavilion, you will also find a statue of Buddha called Haesugwaneumsang, so take the opportunity to snap a photo with this relic!

Naksan Beach – enjoy a slice of paradise

The last stop of our Mount Seorak tour is the stunning Naksan Beach. Located on the north-east coast of Gangwon-do Province in South Korea, Naksan Beach is a gorgeous area for those who enjoy sea views and white sands! At four kilometers long, the beach is perfect for strolling with your loved ones and getting your feet wet on a hot summer day. One of the best aspects of Naksan Beach is that it is never crowded so you will have plenty of space!

The sunrises and sunsets here are quite beautiful, in a pink shade, so you will have the chance to end your day with a stunning view of the sun setting on the horizon. Those who enjoy photography will be able to snap incredible photos to later share with their friends!

Kickstart your travels with our Mount Seorak tour which offers a wonderful balance of nature, history, relaxation, and food! Spend time disconnecting from the busy city life and don’t miss the opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones in a beautiful setting!

Traveler Reviews

This was an excellent tour. I guide picked us up at our hotel promptly. The drive to the mountain was 3 hrs, but we stopped at a rest stop and our guide bought us snacks. The mountain tour was beautiful and our guide shared his personal reasons for loving mountains. We visited a templa and an incredibly windy mountain pass as well. Our lunch was a very yummy hot pot at a restaurant on the way home. My sister and I were the only people on our group tour, so it was like a private tour.

Our day trip go Seoraksan Mountain was amazing.

Our guide, Mr. Insang Yoon, was friendly, kind, and very informative. He spoke pretty good english. Pick-up service was right on time. He sent a msg via Whatsapp to inform us that he had arrived and waiting at the lobby. Funny thing was, all of us saw him come in as we got out of the elevator, we just didn’t know it was our guide. Mr. Insang Yoon would randomly share historical facts about the country along the 3-hr drive to the mountain and stopped half-way at a gas station so we could use the restrooms and buy snacks. I like taking photos so, I was clicking away on my camera as we pass one beautiful scenery after another which Mr. Insang Yoon noticed and offered to stop for a 10 min break so I can take photos. He gave us options for our lunch as well; traditional meal of Sokcho province or Shabu Shabu. He was very patient with us all day. As a group of 4 females which included a 60-yr old (My mom), we would stop and take photos as we hiked/walked. My mom injured her back on a skiing trip 2 days earlier so she had trouble getting up and getting out of the car and Mr. InsangYoon always rushed to help her. When we returned, he dropped us off right in front of our hotel. He could have stopped on the other side and we could have easily crossed the road but he made a u-turn and stopped in front of our hotel.

One day before our trip, I received an email and sms informing about our pick-up time and place.

If you love the mountain side then this place is a must-go. I was told it’s beautiful all year round regardless of the weather. We loved every bit of this trip; the mountain, the views, the weather and the car ride. It took us about 3 hours to reach Seoraksan National Park from Seoul. During the car ride, there were many beautiful sceneries to admire. We went through so many tunnels as well and the little kid inside of me was excited whenever we went in one. The weather that day was very cold. We were told it was the coldest its been this month but we enjoyed it. We took the cable car up and then walked 7 mins or so to reach the top. Worth every shiver and step to see the beautiful scenery with our eyes and take photos. Our guide, Mr. Insang Yoon, explained about every place we went. Whenever there was a map, he would point out where we were and how long til we reach our destination. He shared that in the old days, this was a popular spot for honeymooners and I think I can see why. The park is huge and there are several different paths, some of which can take up to 7 hrs just for one-way. I think people can camp over night too in some areas because if I remembered correctly, our guide mentioned he spent a few nights there with a big group. During lunch Mr. Yoon explained more about Korean culture and shared a little about his days in the military service and a little about his family as well. Never an awkward moment with him. After lunch, we stopped by Yongso Waterfall and there with the help of Mr. Insang we stood on part of the frozen stream and took photos. It was an experience I’ll never forget. On our way back to Seoul, he stopped by Gapyeong Service Center so we could take a break and maybe do some shopping but we were tired so we didn’t. We were grateful for this thoughtfulness though.

We had a wonderful experience and enjoyed the services provided. Thank you Happimize Travel and Mr. Insang Yoon. This day trip was worth every penny we paid.

transportation is great and luxurious. We had great time with our tour guide as he has told us a lot of information during our tour, not only about Mt. seoraksan but also other parts of korea as well. Since my mum was unable to hike up hill, he suggested us an alternative way walk down hill instead of up hill to ensure all of us can enjoy the natural beautiful scenery of Mt seoraksan. our tour guide is very experienced and has in-depth knowledge on seoraksan/history. The shabu-shabu lunch is good. the trip is good in overall.

Very friendly guide

Tour was great. Mr Yoon was very accommodating and informative.

Was nice but there a considerable delay due to holiday congested road traffic. The driver and the Guide,Mr Alex Lee was very helpful and patient ,he was an excellent in all aspects. I suggest to block this tour during such holiday. Mohammed Abulaban

Amazing views of the Korean mountains and countryside. Thoroughly enjoyable

Eventhough you can do this tour from Seoul on your own, which of course gives you more flexibility, I guess, the flexibility is limited due to short available time there. Costwise I did not compare. The day was great, as the thick clouds lifted in the afternoon and we had much better views after.

Our tour had 12 people total. While hotel pick up and drop off is a draw, it really takes a long time during rush hour in Seoul. We were first on and last off and spent a good 2 hours waiting for participants to get on/off the bus. I appreciate the convenience of pickup, but a central meeting point is reasonable in a city with such great public transit.

It was raining for the morning of our tour and an accident on the highway forced the driver to detour, so we ended up arriving at the park much later than anticipated. The guide got our group ticket and we got on the cable car and walked the path to the overlook together. At the top, we were told we had 15-20 minutes to spend, then to meet back at the cable car so we could get lunch. Lunch was about 30-45 minutes, then we had the option of taking pictures on our own on the ground level - no longer in the cable car area or go with the guide to the temple about an hour or so of free time.

The view from the top was not so great, thanks to the rain that morning. Obviously, that's no fault to the operator, but it would have been awesome had the guide given us the option of a going back up, whether at our own cost or not, or b decided to board the cable cars after lunch, when the weather would have been clearer. On the plus side, the included lunch was tasty and filling, and the afternoon did clear up nicely so I ended up with a lot of nice photos, just looking up instead of down. We went at peak time for fall foliage.

All in all, this was a good tour but not great. It seems like a lot of the previous reviewers had small groups and fair weather - perhaps if those were the conditions I experienced, I would recommend it more wholeheartedly. It is a beautiful area and I am glad I got to see it, but the costs seem pretty steep in hindsight.

We had anticipated this to be a great tour, but did not turn out to be so. Our guide was Alex Lee and looking at other reviews by fellow travelers, we feel that we must have had Alex on his 'off' day. He did not see to be warm and friendly and he also was not too forthcoming about any information. Having a longer travel time, we expected some useful information about the history, geography or in general any sort of tidbits about the country especially since there was another driver who was driving the bus. Unfortunately, he did not offer any, and in addition, there was hardly any information given about the actual tour, the parts of the Seoraksan that we would visit, etc.

The place itself was decent, but we felt that we did not get any information about the Shinhungsa temple, nor did the guide felt the need to accompany us to the temple to give us a slightest history. The Buddha statue along the path is imposing and offers a great meditative experiences. Unfortunately, we were given only a general direction from far near the cable car station to choose either a shorter or the longer walk! At an appointed time, we gathered at the cable car base station to go the top with the cable car. We were hustled for a 10 minute hike up a well maintained path and were given a small amount of time at the top where the views were good but no information about the terrain, history of how/why the Buddhist monks chose this place, etc.

Based on our extensive travel, we consider this to be the worst guided tour experience for us and hence the trip became underwhelming instead of what could have been a memorable one.
