9 questions and answers on the Rory McIlroy, PGA Tour board drama

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods walk together at the 2023 Masters.

Go ahead and slap a zero on the “It’s been X days since golf had unnecessary drama” board. Rory McIlroy’s intention to rejoin the PGA Tour Policy Board has been thwarted, as McIlroy remarked Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Championship that a “subset” of players blocked his return. You have questions and we have … well, we don’t have answers, because the incontrovertible takeaway from the past two years in professional golf is that no one knows anything, at least for certain. But we do have some idea of the behind-the-scenes intrigue regarding power control and the trajectory of the tour’s future, so we’ll do our best to explain what the heck is going on.

OK, what is going on? In late April, the Guardian reported McIlory was returning to the PGA Tour Policy Board, taking the place of Webb Simpson, who wanted to surrender his position and give it to McIlroy. McIlroy was previously on the board but resigned his post last November. McIlroy confirmed the report the following day at the Zurich Classic. “I don’t think there’s been much progress made in the last eight months, and I was hopeful that there would be,” McIlroy said. “I think I could be helpful to the process. But only if people want me involved.” Only if people want me involved proved to be operative words. For the past two weeks there have been rumblings that the planned move had an icy reception from other board members, which McIlroy confirmed Wednesday morning at Quail Hollow.

“There's been a lot of conversations. Sort of reminded me partly why I didn't [originally want to stay on the board]," McIlroy said, referencing his departure. "I think it got pretty complicated and pretty messy, and I think with the way it happened, I think it opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before … there was a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason. … I think Webb just stays on and sees out his term, and I think he's gotten to a place where he's comfortable with doing that and I just sort of keep doing what I'm doing."

So, for the moment, McIlroy remains out and Simpson is still in.

Why did Rory McIlroy resign in the first place?

McIlroy served as the de facto face of the PGA Tour in its battle with LIV Golf, standing up for his tour in the absence of leadership and doing so because he believed it was the right thing to do. Along with Tiger Woods, he spearheaded a player-led initiative in the summer of 2022 that restructured the tour schedule and seemed to prevent further player exodus. McIlroy admitted that putting himself out there in the game’s civil war took an emotional and physical toll, which McIroy said he was still reckoning with.

So when the tour announced last June a surprising partnership with the LIV Golf’s backer, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund—a negotiation that McIlroy was not a part of—McIlroy conceded a sense of betrayal. “It's hard for me to not sit up here and feel somewhat like a sacrificial lamb and feeling like I've put myself out there and this is what happens,” McIlroy said at the RBC Canadian Open a day after the framework agreement announcement. Nevertheless, McIlroy continued in his position on the tour’s policy board throughout the summer. When he ultimately resigned in late November 2023, he cited personal and professional commitments, but also nodded to the direction a potentially unified professional game could be going, that a deal private-equity deal was on the horizon (which came to fruition two months later, with the tour choosing the Fenway-led Strategic Sports Group) and felt his job was done. The remaining board directors elected Jordan Spieth to take McIlroy’s place. What spurred McIlroy’s reversal?

According to NBC Sports analyst Brad Faxon (who also serves as McIlroy’s putting coach from time to time), McIlroy regretted his decision “almost immediately.” Also, as McIlroy alluded to in his Zurich comments, talks between the PGA Tour and PIF had stalled. While McIlroy has not moved from his anti-LIV Golf stance, the Ulsterman has conceded that golf’s schism is unsustainable and PIF’s participation in professional golf is inevitable. For McIlroy, the most palliative of avenues forward is one where PIF’s investment is diverted to the tour, which would likely welcome reunification of a fractured sport. McIlroy presumably believed his return to the board helps bridge the current gap.

Why does Webb Simpson want off?

Depends on whom you ask. Simpson, for his part, wants to spend more time focusing on golf and his family. It should also be noted that he is considered one of the more respected and well-liked players on tour, but has come under criticism for his use of four sponsor's exemptions into limited-field signature events. There is also a belief among players, fair or not, that PGA Tour and SSG leadership wants McIlroy on the board to help advocate for unification. Given his credentials, McIlroy is seen as a stronger proponent than Simpson for this task.

Is Simpson allowed to just hand off an elected spot?

Technically, no; it’s an elected position. But when McIlroy resigned it was just the five other player directors who elected Spieth, not the entire tour membership. It’s also worth remembering the players created a new position for Woods on the board out of thin air. You’re not wrong for thinking everyone is just making this up as they go.

Who is the “subset” that doesn’t want McIlroy to return?

(Sigh) OK, let’s get into it. McIlroy didn’t name names, but sources tell Golf Digest that Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods were not particularly eager to welcome McIlroy back. The icy relationship between Cantlay and McIlroy is well-documented; McIlroy himself conceded last fall in an interview with the Irish Independent. “My relationship with Cantlay is average at best. We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently.”

Later in the interview, when speaking to the infamous spat between McIlroy and Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, at the Ryder Cup, McIlroy said, “LaCava used to be a nice guy when he was caddieing for Tiger, and now he’s caddieing for that d--k he’s turned into a … I still wasn’t in a great headspace.” The McIlroy-Woods relationship, sources tell Golf Digest, has also soured over the past six months. It remains cordial, yet their different views on the future of professional golf has led to a falling out of sorts. As for Spieth and McIlroy, McIlroy removed himself from a player text chain following Spieth’s comments at Pebble Beach (where Spieth said the tour doesn’t need PIF after the deal with SSG), leading to an hour-long chat between the two. “My thing was if I’m the original [potential] investor that thought that they were going to get this deal done back in July, and I’m hearing a board member say that we don’t really need them now, how are they going to think about that, what are they gonna feel about that?” McIlroy said. “They are still sitting out there with hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, that they’re gonna pour it into sport. And I know what Jordan was saying. … But if I were PIF and I was hearing that coming from here, the day after doing this SSG deal, it wouldn’t have made me too happy, I guess?”

The tension remained at the Players Championship, where Spieth and McIlroy played together in the first two rounds and featured combative moments in the first round regarding two of McIlroy’s drops.

What are the Woods/Cantlay/Spieth arguments against McIlroy?

As a preface, let us again state that if anyone deserves grace, it’s McIlroy. What he did over two years for the tour and the game brought an invisible pain and weight that can't be measured, and he was sold out by the very thing he was trying to defend. However, there is the idea that McIlroy did resign an elected spot, and players—and not just on the board—don’t think he just gets to simply walk on back.

“He was very clear that it was too much for him. He had business dealings, he has a kid, he wants to focus on his game. Trust me, I get it. But once you quit, you’re not getting back,” Kevin Streelman, a former member of the policy board who ran against McIlroy for Player Advisory Council chairman, told Golfweek. “I wouldn’t quit on something that you were elected to by your peers. To want back in is peculiar.”

There is also the perception of a financial entanglement. McIlroy is part of the Fenway-backed TGL Boston team and Fenway is a major player in the Strategic Sports Group. That McIlroy’s team and tour leadership have attempted to sell the board on McIlroy’s return, sources tell Golf Digest, has further raised suspicions.

Additionally, while players are fine with McIlroy changing his stance on PIF involvement, sources tell Golf Digest, a set of them don't like that McIlroy is frustrated others haven't changed their opinions with him.

And let's be honest, there's also some ego involved, to say nothing of a power play. It's like "Succession," only if everyone was Kendall Roy.

How ridiculous is all of this?

Well, as a history minor in college, we were warmed to see McIlroy invoke the Good Friday Agreement when asked his thoughts about how all of this is resolved. For context: “I sort of liken it to like when Northern Ireland went through the peace process in the '90s and the Good Friday Agreement, neither side was happy,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “Catholics weren't happy, Protestants weren't happy, but it brought peace and then you just sort of learn to live with whatever has been negotiated, right? That was in 1998 or whatever it was and 20, 25, 30 years ahead, my generation doesn't know any different. It's just this is what it's always been like and we've never known anything but peace.” McIlroy has a valid point, but also … we’re invoking a peace treaty that ended a three-decades long actual war in the context about, essentially, two battling golf businesses.

So, what does all of this mean? Well, unity between the PGA Tour and PIF doesn’t solely hinge on McIlroy’s participation. But Wednesday’s development doesn’t help, to say nothing of the optics of the internal politics at play with the tour. And until those fissures are fixed, it’s unlikely that golf’s civil war will thaw anytime soon.

Rory McIlroy wins Wells Fargo Championship. Is he a favorite for PGA?

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - MAY 12: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland reacts after holing-out for eagle from a greenside bunker on the 15th hole during the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club on May 12, 2024 in Clifton, North Carolina. Rory McIlroy’s peers may be getting better and better at denying him what he wants, but none of them had an answer for McIlroy on Sunday at the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy turned a match-play situation with Xander Schauffele in the final round at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., into an absolute rout, winning by 5 strokes after shooting a final-round 65.

McIlroy, who was 17-under for the week, has now won two straight starts, following up a team win with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic with the fourth Wells Fargo Championship win of his career. He now heads to next week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, the site of his 2014 PGA win, as the closest thing to a co-favorite Scottie Scheffler has had this season.

“It feels like the stars are aligning a little bit, but I’ve got a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat next week,” McIlroy told CBS.

McIlroy began the day one shot behind Schauffele at the signature event. He started with a birdie on No. 1 to tie Schauffele, then withstood the latter’s eagle on the par-5 7th for a two-shot lead. That’s when McIlroy got to work: birdie on 8, birdie on 9 and an eagle on 10. Suddenly he was at 15-under and ahead of Schauffele again.

Schauffele could not withstand the pressure, bogeying Nos. 12 and 14 to slip five shots behind McIlroy with four holes to go.

The week began as most weeks on the PGA Tour do nowadays, with discussion about policies and committees and “Succession”-esque tactics carried out by men in golf shirts. McIlroy made it clear last month that he was prepared to rejoin the PGA Tour policy board and help get a deal with the PIF over the finish line, only for it to come out Wednesday that his efforts had been denied (reportedly by the trio of Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay). Instead, McIlroy will serve in another way, on the PGA Tour Enterprises transactions sub-committee — negotiating with the PIF as part of a group of businessmen and three golfers — Woods and Adam Scott are the others.

But enough about that and let’s focus on the golf — where McIlroy has again reminded all of us that he’s one of the best players in the world and a top-tier threat to finally, mercifully end his decade-long major drought, perhaps as soon as next week.

HOLE-OUT EAGLE FOR RORY!!! He now leads by SIX! pic.twitter.com/UE49lwfwNC — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 12, 2024

His hole-out eagle from the greenside bunker on No. 15 essentially turned the final hour of coverage into a lead-in to the PGA Championship — even airmailing the 18th green into the creek drew little more than a chuckle from the winner. McIlroy was second in the 68-man field in strokes gained off the tee, fourth in strokes gained approach, fifth in strokes gained around the green and eighth in putting.

Quail Hollow set up exceptionally difficult this week — McIlroy finished eight shots ahead of third-place Ben An and a remarkable 35 shots ahead of last-place Eric Cole. Only 20 players were below par for the week. McIlroy also won this event in 2010 (the first of his PGA Tour career), 2015 and 2021.

“These people have sort of watched me grow up, from winning here as a 20-year-old to being the ripe old age of 35 now, they’ve seen my progression throughout my career. … The support I get here is absolutely amazing,” McIlroy said.

Every part of his game is working right now, a fairly drastic departure from the man who admitted at the Players Championship in March that he was working through one swing thought with his driver and another with his irons. He’s smoothed out that particular issue since.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland hits a tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina

Rory McIlroy set to make a surprise return to PGA Tour board

  • Webb Simpson requested world No 2 to take his place
  • Four-time major winner resigned from policy board in November

Rory McIlroy’s commitment to a stronger future for elite golf could be confirmed by a dramatic return to board positions on the PGA Tour as early as this week. Sources close to the situation have told the Guardian that roles for McIlroy as a director both on the PGA Tour’s policy board and on PGA Tour Enterprises are subject to a vote on Wednesday, after Webb Simpson tendered resignation along with the explicit request that the Northern Irishman takes his place.

McIlroy reappearing on the frontline will represent a major boost to the PGA Tour and its sponsors as the sport attempts to end the disruption caused by the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV’s arrival on the scene.

McIlroy surprisingly resigned from the PGA Tour’s policy board last November. The assumption then was that the four-time major winner wanted to place more focus on matters inside the ropes . Yet men’s professional golf remains in a state of flux, with traditional tours and LIV operating on different paths. McIlroy has always felt damage being done to golf’s reputation and exposure as a result of the LIV schism is hugely harmful. “The game is way better with all of us together,” McIlroy said in recent days.

The 34-year-old is now of a mind to step back into the scenario in an attempt to make headway. McIlroy stated his desire to play on the PGA Tour for the remainder of his career last week, after spurious rumours suggested he may be subject to a LIV offer. That the world No 2 still wants to be at the forefront of the PGA Tour’s decision making should sit well with the rank and file membership.

Others likely to be impressed by McIlroy’s potential return include the DP World Tour, who would have a boardroom voice at the PGA Tour, and Fenway Sports Group (FSG). FSG, as part of the Strategic Sports Group (SSG), signed a commercial agreement with the PGA Tour earlier this year. Fenway and McIlroy have existing connections via TGL, a stadium golf league due to launch in 2025. McIlroy also enjoys historically good relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The PIF has a desire to work alongside the PGA Tour and SSG but have been unable to make sufficient headway on that deal; there will be a hope McIlroy can move the process forward.

after newsletter promotion

Fellow board members who will vote on McIlroy’s return include Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth. Cantlay’s thoughts on this matter could be especially interesting. Spieth and McIlroy had words after the Texan suggested an alliance with the PIF “wasn’t needed.” al-Rumayyan subsequently held a meeting with PGA Tour board members and SSG in the Bahamas. McIlroy is in the field for this week’s Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy to receive massive loyalty payouts from PGA Tour after equity investment, per report

The two most popular players on the pga tour will be made whole this week after turning down overtures from liv golf.

The Masters - Round Two

The loyalty shown by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and other star golfers to the PGA Tour will be officially rewarded on Wednesday. Woods is set to receive $100 million in equity as part of the newly created for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises with McIlroy obtaining about half as much equity,  according to the Telegraph ,

The stakes being awarded to Woods, McIlroy and other PGA Tour stars are part of a make-good by the league to thank players for sticking by its side rather than leave for big-money contracts from LIV Golf (as backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund).

Earlier this year, PGA Tour Enterprises received an investment of up to $3 billion from Strategic Sports Group, a high-profile assortment of billionaire sports owners. While it is unclear how that investment will be spent, this equity distribution will be backstopped by those funds.

Payouts are being handed to players based on a variety of factors, including career success and cultural popularity. Several hundred players will receive stakes, though the majority of that equity -- up to $750 million -- will go to the top 36 players as determined by an undisclosed formula that takes into consideration the aforementioned factors, among others.

While the figures are gaudy, this is not simply a cash payout, as explained by the  Telegraph .

After four years, 50 percent of their equity will be vested, with another 25 percent two years later and the remaining amount two years after that. They will also have to fall in line with the rules, which as well as not decamping, involve meeting the minimum requirements for Tour membership and, if not, providing services such as sponsors meets and media appearances.

How this plays out going forward will be interesting. There will reportedly be $100 million in equity handed out annually, which will add up quickly. Even with the $3 billion backing, that's a lot of equity going to current and future players.

Regardless, the intent is clear: The PGA Tour is rewarding players for their loyalty. It is also attempting to align incentives within the organization. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said as much at The Players Championship earlier in this year.

"Historically, our structure has limited our ability to make transformative investments into the sport," he said. "With PGA Tour Enterprises, with our 13-member board of directors now in place and the partnership with Strategic Sports Group, we've changed that dynamic and unleashed our potential for future growth.

"With our player equity program, which is the first in professional sports, our interests and those of our players will be more deeply aligned. Our business thrives when together we're all laser focused on delivering for our fans. If we fail on that front, we fail on every front."

Players will reportedly begin receiving emails with the amount of equity they have been awarded this week. The equity numbers will be based on the $12 billion valuation from earlier this year when the SSG received 25% of PGA Tour Enterprises for its up to $3 billion investment.

What’s going on with Rory McIlroy, Jay Monahan, Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour board?

Jay Monahan weighed in on Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour board drama, adding a new chapter to pro golf's ongoing saga.

On Wednesday morning, shortly after Rory McIlroy’s press conference at the Wells Fargo Championship, GOLF reached out to the PGA Tour curious if they’d have official comment. Wednesday evening we got one, from commissioner Jay Monahan:

“Today’s news is in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence. It’s simply a matter of adherence to our governance process by which a Tour player becomes a Board member,” his statement read.

So what was “today’s news?” How’d it involve Monahan, McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson and Patrick Cantlay? Let’s cruise through what happened.

I. There was a report about Rory

“Today’s news” actually began several weeks ago with a report from the Guardian that Webb Simpson would be stepping aside from the PGA Tour Policy Board and Rory McIlroy would be taking his place. That was intriguing because McIlroy had resigned from the board just a few months before. Now he’d be headed back?

“I think I could be helpful to the process,” he said at the time, lamenting the months gone by without significant progress in negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund. “But only if people want me involved, I guess.”

II. Nothing happened

For a couple of weeks. There was talk of a vote, but the vote didn’t happen. So there was a report and then there was nothing. That seemed odd. It begged the question: Did relevant people in fact not want McIlroy involved?

III. Rory didn’t join the board

Sorry for spoiling the ending here, but on Wednesday morning McIlroy spoke to assembled media following his morning pro-am at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., and broke the news: No board return for him. (You can read Sean Zak’s full account here .)

McIlroy described it as “uncomfortable” and “complicated” and “messy.” He added that he thought the process “opened up some old wounds and scar tissue from things that have happened before.” He put his hand up to help, he said, but then things got complicated. No dice. It all sounded rather painful.

“So that’s all fine, no hard feelings and we’ll all move on,” he said, seeking a hopeful conclusion.

IV. Webb told his side of the story

The next man at the microphone after McIlroy was, fittingly, Simpson. He lives near Quail Hollow and is playing on a sponsor’s exemption this week and he said the McIlroy maneuver came from a simple place: he just wants to help.

“So his perspective is tremendous to us,” Simpson said. “He’s a global player, always has been, so I just think his views are important, and the other guys feel the same.”

Simpson added that McIlroy didn’t want to cause “any drama or big stories,” but here we are. As for the idea that other board members weren’t comfortable with McIlroy returning? He didn’t see it that way.

“No. I think what we had to work through was, you know, where could his role best be utilized,” Simpson said. “There’s a lot of different roles right now that different players are playing on different committees or us on the policy board or the enterprises board.”

That raised an interesting possibility, then: Even if McIlroy’s not on the policy board, could he serve on one such committee?

V. The rumor mill ran wild

“Rumor mill” probably isn’t fair. There was likely some truth to it all. But various golf media establishments ran with McIlroy’s comments and connected the dots to make the assumption that the policy board triumvirate of Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods had been working together to block McIlroy’s appointment. If true, that would be salacious; Spieth replaced McIlroy in the fall after all, and Cantlay and McIlroy have Ryder Cup and policy board beef dating back months, and Woods and McIlroy started a golf league together. It’s a small, entangled world.

It’s especially entangled for McIlroy, a fact that’s seen as both a strength and a weakness for his board candidacy; he’s close with the Fenway Sports Group, which is at the core of the PGA Tour’s new investment group SSG (Strategic Sports Group) and has a relationship with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF and the chairman of LIV. Add in the fact that he’s World No. 2 and a global superstar and McIlroy seems like a man who could help find common ground or a man with conflicts of interest, depending who you asked.

6. The commissioner corrected the record

Monahan made it clear that McIlroy’s omission was “simply a matter of adherence to our governance process.” It was telling that he made the statement at all, and perhaps a sign that Monahan knows better than to let McIlroy twist in the wind.

Others familiar with the negotiations confirmed Monahan’s account; there was a procedural flaw in the original plan. Simpson wasn’t permitted to make a conditional resignation naming his successor. That doesn’t mean the other factors didn’t play a role, but McIlroy’s appointment never reached the official voting stage.

“Webb remaining in his position as a member of the Policy Board and PGA Tour Enterprises Board through the end of his term provides the continuity needed at this vital time,” Monahan’s statement continued. “We are making progress in our negotiations with the PIF and are working as a collective — the Player Directors, our Boards and Tour management — to remain open-minded to all avenues that advance the Tour in the best interest of our players, our partners and, most importantly, our fans.”

7. An important committee got named

How’s this for timing? Also on Wednesday, Tiger Woods was the lone player named to the PGA Tour Enterprises’ five-person “transaction subcommittee” that will negotiate with the Saudi PIF; he’ll be joined by Monahan, policy board chairman Joe Gorder, Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry and recent board appointee Joe Ogilvie.

Multiple sources referenced the possibility of McIlroy joining that subcommittee in some capacity despite not being a member of the policy board. That would be a logical compromise, as it would avoid the thorniness of a McIlroy board appointment while still tapping into his perspective and connections. He has made it clear that he feels a deal between golf’s warring factions is the clear best course of action and this would represent a chance to help make that happen.

But which parties want the deal to get done? And within what parameters? As with this entire saga, you should believe the next concrete step when you see it.
