Live reviews

While many people remember the band Semisonic, due to their somewhat short career and hit production, not many had the chance to see this great band live.

Luckily, back in 2001, I had the chance to see them do a short set in an outdoor festival called PinkPop. It was a fairly hot day, and I had come to see several bands on the bill that day. We were sitting and waiting for the next band to take the stage, not knowing that we were about to see Semisonic put on an amazing energetic show.

As they took the stage people slowly stood up, making there way closer to the stage and sort of bobbing their heads. The band took the energy they were getting from the crowd and ran with it, playing a killer set. After two or three songs, I had made my way close to the stage because I knew that at any moment they were going to play “Closing time”.

When Dan Wilson announced it was their final song, I couldn’t contain myself. They started playing and everyone remembered every word. As the song hit its melodic end, I looked around. The crowd had all become like one for a moment some people holding each other and some just holding back tears. It was a very powerful concert.

Semisonic offers 'some kind of consolation' on Minnesota trio's first new LP in 22 years

"Little Bit of Sun" arrives Friday with guests including Jason Isbell and a newfound appreciation for the old band.

By Chris Riemenschneider

You know your band is solid when one member can tell another that their guitar part in a new song isn't so hot.

That's how one of Minnesota's all-time greatest rock bands wound up having a special guest deliver a wicked solo on its first album in 22 years. That's also indicative of the brotherly closeness that has kept Semisonic together as a band over the past two decades — despite its members now living thousands of miles apart with lots of other things to do besides playing with their old group.

"Getting the three of us in one place was the great challenge of this record," singer/guitarist Dan Wilson said as bassist John Munson and drummer Jacob Slichter looked on.

"John says, 'I'm available anytime,' but in truth he always has gigs because he loves to play. Jake is a professor, so obviously he can't just up and leave. And I got a lot of stuff going on, too."

Wilson's other "stuff" includes co-writing songs behind the scenes with such top-tier hitmakers as Adele, Taylor Swift, the Chicks and — just among 2023 releases — Chris Stapleton, Celine Dion and Jon Batiste.

When he and his bandmates of 1998's "Closing Time" platinum-selling fame finally got around to recording "Little Bit of Sun," their LP due out Friday, Wilson and Munson wound up with different opinions on one of the standout tracks, "Out of the Dirt."

"I don't want to put words in John's mouth," Wilson said with a smiling bite, "but basically he made it known that the guitar parts I had laid down were annoying."

Munson kindly interjected, "It just needed something different. "

That something different proved to be Jason Isbell, the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter who is also known as an ace guitarist. One of a handful of outsiders enlisted to help the close-knit band complete its new record, Isbell reinvented the guitar solo in the one song as Semisonic hit restart with all 12 songs on "Little Bit of Sun."

The album comes relatively close on the heels of the 2020 EP "You're Not Alone," which ended Semisonic's two-decade recording hiatus by delivering a compact five-song batch of classic Semisonic songs: upbeat, tightly spun, richly melodic power-pop fueled by the joy of the band members finally recording again for the first time since their 2001 album "All About Chemistry."

"Little Bit of Sun" is a bit different, though. There's still plenty of the punchy, melodic Semisonic pop of old (best example: "The Rope" ). But it's much more sonically varied than the EP or any other of the band's releases, with traces of classic Los Angeles pop (the Munson-sung "If You Say So"), Iron & Wine-like indie-folky balladry ("Don't Fade Away," "Only Empathy") and a potent spike of Tom Petty-style Americana rock ("Out of the Dirt" and "Grow Your Own").

The wider array of sounds came with the confidence boost the old bandmates got off the warm reception for the "You're Not Alone" EP.

"That EP proved to me I could still do it, and we could still do it," Munson said. "It gave us more intention to this second round of recording, and more openness to the wealth of material that Dan brought in."

"We were more open to playing around," Wilson said. "Instead of having a set idea in our mind of what a certain song should sound like and trying to make it fit that box, we went more with the flow of what it sounded like as we were playing it."

Much of the recording was done over four different sessions in Minneapolis at Creation Audio, the Nicollet Avenue facility that hosted the Trashmen as Kay Bank Studios in the '60s.

The earliest sessions were supposed to be tied to Semisonic's return to the stage at First Avenue in September 2021, but those shows got canceled by COVID-19's Delta wave.

"I thought: Are we just going to wait like two years to play our new songs for people?" Wilson recalled. "That didn't seem very exciting to me to have to wait. So I started writing even more songs to have ready to go whenever we could play again."

But it's not really a "pandemic record" thematically, he said. A lot of the songs look back nostalgically on their younger days, including "If You Say So" and "Grow Your Own" — the latter inspired by Wilson's first forays into music with Trip Shakespeare (featuring Munson and Dan's brother Matt Wilson).

"It's about that time when you turn 20 or so and are complaining about everybody else's band, and realize you just have to start your own," Wilson explained.

As nostalgic as they are, the songs on "Little Bit of Sun" also sound right in the moment in 2023, capturing what sounds like post-pandemic optimism and deeper appreciation for the good things.

Slichter actually countered Wilson's claim that it's not a record inspired by the pandemic, citing the warm title track that opens the album.

"It's impossible for me to hear 'Little Bit of Sun' without the context of being stuck inside," said the drummer, who co-wrote another new track ("Keep Me in Motion") with Wilson.

"I used to say Dan's songwriting was like 10 years ahead of the curve culturally," Slichter continued, "and now it's like 18 months ahead. So by the time we go through our slow Semisonic process, it's like he knows exactly where we'll be when the songs come out."

"Little Bit of Sun" is one of three tracks Wilson wrote with a frequent songwriting collaborator, Amy Allen. He co-wrote other songs with Munson, Boston folkie Lori McKenna and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James.

"I think with all the songs, I wanted some kind of consolation," Wilson said, "something that made me feel the music had a deeper purpose. 'Don't Fade Away' is a good example. It's about being utterly in the present moment and drinking up that experience."

You can imagine how much consolation was felt, then, when Semisonic finally got to perform again in 2023.

The trio started with a trio of Minneapolis shows at Icehouse and First Avenue this past January. Those prefaced a '90s-nostalgia package tour this summer with Barenaked Ladies and Del Amitri — Semisonic's first real tour in more than 20 years, though the band did play sporadic gigs in the interim and never truly went on hiatus.

"It was so incredibly fun and rewarding," Munson said of the trek. The bassist has remained a mainstay in the Twin Cities live music scene, playing with the New Standards, Munson-Hicks Party Supplies, Lucy Michelle and many more.

"It wasn't just that we were doing it again, but doing it knowing we had this new record in our back pocket, and having some of those songs to play. That made it all the more exciting."

Wilson, who now lives in Los Angeles , was supposed to return to Minneapolis this weekend for a pair of hometown solo shows at the Woman's Club, but those had to be postponed until February for personal reasons. However, he remains firmly committed to returning to the road with Semisonic next year.

For proof, Wilson recounted an exchange he had with his bandmates when they played the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver in June with BNL.

"We had played Red Rocks 22 years before, but somehow I didn't notice how cool it was, how beautiful," he said. "I was so intent on moving our band forward, wondering if our new song was getting played on the radio in Omaha and whatnot.

"This time around, I got up on stage and was just stunned — stunned by how I could've missed it the first time, but also stunned by the fact that I was lucky enough to have the chance to do it again and fully appreciate it."

Sounds like there's going to be a lot of that going around this time around for Semisonic.

Semisonic News

New semisonic music out now.

Album cover for Semisonic's two songs: "Little Bit of Sun" and "Grow Your Own"

We’re overjoyed to announce our two new songs, “Little Bit Of Sun” and “Grown Your Own”!!

“Little Bit of Sun” came out really fast. We’ve all been so beaten down by darkness for the last few years, it’s like we can hardly ask for a full sky of sunshine. We can get by on a little bit, but at some point we want it all!

Dan wrote “Grow Your Own” about the joy and blue sky of starting a band. If you’re a musician and you hear some music you love, you’re gonna want to make some yourself. Grow your own. And if you don’t hear the music you want to hear in the world, well then, all the more reason to grow your own.

Looking forward to performing these this month while on tour with the Barenaked Ladies.

Barenaked Ladies Announce “Last Summer On Earth” 2023 Tour With Semisonic, Five for Fighting and Del Amitri

Those beloved, fun-loving rockers  Barenaked Ladies  are at it again as they announce their 7th almost-annual, expansive Last Summer on Earth 2023 American Tour .

Continuing the trend that they began a little more than a decade ago, the Toronto-based eight-time JUNO winners and two-time Grammy nominees are eager to hit the road this summer, playing three dozen shows in major venues all over the United States beginning June 2.

This summer, headliners Barenaked Ladies shake things up a bit by having not one, but two direct support acts, with American bands Semisonic (June 2–June 26) and Five for Fighting (June 28–July 22) splitting the shows. Scottish rockers Del Amitri will open all the shows.

Barenaked Ladies launched their Last Summer on Earth tours in 2012, the year the ancient Mayan calendar had predicted Earth would cease to be. Naturally, BNL seized the opportunity to have a little fun with the idea, and they wound up having so much fun that they’ve repeated the tour seven of the last 12 summers.

Barenaked Ladies Last Summer on Earth Tour 2023

On their previous Last Summer on Earth tours — a phrase so fraught with irony that it fully befits this band of clever, scholarly rockers — Barenaked Ladies have enjoyed inviting friends along for the ride. Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket warmed up the crowds last summer, and Cracker, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler, Guster, Ben Folds Five, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay, OMD, Howard Jones, Better Than Ezra, and KT Tunstall have all gone out with BNL on previous Last Summer on Earth tours.

And now, in the summer of 2023, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees, the band who taught us the value of a million dollars, who explained The Big Bang in under two minutes, and who made us say “underwear”, will bring their show full of hits and fan favorites to American audiences.

Premium seats, merch packages, pre-show soundcheck parties, meet-and-greets, and more will highlight a variety of VIP packages for Barenaked Ladies’ Last Summer on Earth 2023 American Tour.

Barenaked Bytes is the free, official Barenaked Ladies app, and it is where you’ll find BNL news, information, and merch, and, with the purchase of a Barenaked Bytes bundle, first access to tickets and VIP packages starting January 31st at 10am local time. The Bytes bundle will also contain an exclusive BNL t-shirt, which will  only  be available via the app. Barenaked Bytes is available at the  App Store and Google Play . It’s free to download and use:   https://www.barenakedbytes.app/   In-app purchases available.

For Last Summer on Earth 2023, Barenaked Ladies are once again happy to tour in the most sustainable way possible with the help of their partner,  REVERB . Since 2004, Barenaked Ladies have proudly partnered with REVERB to reduce the environmental impact of touring, giving back to local communities across the US and Canada in the process.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, February 3 rd  at 10am local.

November 03, 2023

On Friday, Nov. 3, Semisonic are set to release Little Bit of Sun , the band’s first full-length release in more than 20 years. To mark the occasion, singer and songwriter Dan Wilson joined The Current’s Jill Riley to talk about the new album, its many collaborators, and about the band’s deep connections to Minnesota. “I definitely have always thought of Semisonic as a Minneapolis band,” he says.

Listen to the interview above and read a transcript below.

Interview Transcript

Jill Riley: You're listening to The Current, and I've got a special guest on the line this morning: singer, songwriter and Semisonic member Dan Wilson is with me this morning to talk about the new full-length Semisonic album, Little Bit of Sun . Good morning, Dan, how are you doing?

Dan Wilson: Hey, Jill, I'm great. Thank you.

Jill Riley: The last time we talked, Dan, I remember we'd spent quite a bit of time talking about the 25th anniversary of Feeling Strangely Fine . And then, you know, kicking off a new year with a couple nights with you guys at The Current's 18th anniversary weekend at First Avenue. Over the summer, I checked in with John when you guys were touring with Barenaked Ladies. And now we're bringing it up to the present. That's why I like this. So Dan, if you could talk about the, again, first full-length album in over 20 years, Little Bit of Sun ?

Dan Wilson: Well, I mean, I can barely believe that we've done it. And it's been just a very sort of mind-blowing experience to make the record. And I'm just so happy that people are gonna hear it.

Multi-ringed circle, yellow near the center, blue & red toward the outside

Jill Riley: Yeah. So, you know, it was just a couple years ago that we talked about a new EP, and I remember talking at the time about, you know, kind of the timing of it, and when you felt inspired, because you write songs with a lot of different artists. And when you felt inspired, like, "Oh, these are Semisonic songs." So I guess my question is, what was your approach to writing the songs for this new Semisonic full-length record? You know, did it feel nostalgic? Did it take you back? Or did it feel totally present?

Dan Wilson: Let's see, well, I had a couple interesting, maybe, stages along the way of writing this new album and doing it with the guys. First of all, the EP, You're Not Alone , it turned out really, really well, and I really felt like I had remembered how to write for the band. And one thing I realized is, you know, it might have been a bit of an impediment for me to be such a co-writer for other people's records. I learned how to kind of imagine someone else's voice on a song that I was working on. And I love that, and it can be really fun to do it with somebody else.

But with Semisonic, it was harder to do that for my voice somehow. And I had kind of a great breakthrough when I realized that really what I was writing for, as though I was writing for someone's voice was Semisonic, and I'm writing for John and Jake's bass and drum sound. Like when they play, that's the test of whether it's a Semisonic song. And so when I was writing these songs, I had two things in mind: I just wanted to be as emotionally real and honest as I possibly could when I was writing about stuff that was important to me; and I wanted to always kind of almost keep in my mind's ear the sound of John and Jake playing the songs, and would it be cool or not? And it worked.

Three musicians performing onstage

Jill Riley: Yeah. I'm talking about Dan Wilson here on The Current about the new Semisonic full-length record, Little Bit of Sun . So Dan, could you talk about recording the record? Did you record it in Minneapolis?

Dan Wilson: Yes, we, all three of us, really wanted to make it sound like the band playing live as much as we could. So there was really no choice; we had to get together, and Minneapolis is halfway between Jake's home in New York in my home in Los Angeles. So we met four or five times in Minneapolis at Creation Audio over the past two years. And it was really nice to be back home. So like a way to get straight to the heart of things by just playing the songs together.

Jill Riley: Yeah, Creation Audio. I love the history of that building. And you drive by on Nicollet not even really realize it's there, and some don't realize the history that's been made in that space, you know, going back to K Bank Studios to then, you know, Twin Tone and, you know, is that a space that you really were looking forward to being in? I mean, you know, I hear of so many different recording studios in the Twin Cities, you know, what kind of drew you guys to, again, I don't know if there's a story behind wanting to record there, but I certainly understand why you'd want to be in Minneapolis, like you said, kind of logistical reasons but at the same time, you know, Semisonic is a Minneapolis band.

Dan Wilson: I can't say that I felt any kind of ghosts of past music when I was at Creation with the guys, but I definitely have always thought of Semisonic as a Minneapolis band, and it might have been strange to do the record anywhere else. And I think partly because I was, in the writing, I was trying to like get at a kind of, almost like a broad but really specific view of life as I'm experiencing it right now, I guess. I wanted to be OK with thinking about my history and the band's past and my sense of connection to my home. So it was really helpful, just almost in keeping myself and keeping us honest to do it in the place that we made all that music.

Jill Riley: When you think of Minneapolis, you know, thinking of it as home, what are some of the feelings that come up for you?

Dan Wilson: Oh, well, let's see, I've been thinking about Minnesota a lot lately for various family-related reasons. We used to go up to Grand Rapids every summer, my family did, when I was a kid. And that was when my brother Matt and I learned how to play guitar, and that was where my uncles taught me how to clean a fish. And other than school in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park, really, I kind of feel like I grew up in northern Minnesota. So I've been thinking about home a lot lately. And, you know, some of the songs on the new album are very connected to that; I feel like "Don't Fade Away" is all about a sense of connection to that landscape, to those lakes, to nature, in northern Minnesota, and, you know, to my past. So I feel like there's a real Minnesota presence on the record.

Dan Wilson

Jill Riley: I'm talking with Dan Wilson of Semisonic about the brand new full-length record, Little Bit of Sun , Semisonic's first full-length album, in over two decades, in over 20 years.  I know! But the lineup, I mean, you know, since the band formed, you know, it's been you and John Munson and Jake Slichter. And this incredible bond that you have as friends, and you know, in bands, I suppose there's a comparison of family and as people who make music together. Now, I noticed with this new record that there are a couple of guest appearances and some pretty great names: Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Jason Isbell playing guitar on one of the songs. Do you want to just talk about, you know, kind of bringing in some other sounds, some other guests on the record?

Dan Wilson: Oh my god! Well, let's see, I mean, in the writing, I've been such a collaborative songwriter. Even during Semisonic days, I was writing songs with other people, but not for the band. Since then, it's only been more and more of what I do as a musician is make music for other people's records and with them. And if I feel like it's good enough for my collaborators, then maybe it's good enough for me, and maybe it's good enough for my band. And there were a couple of songs that were just, it was obvious that even though I had written them with other people, we had to try them.

Like "Beautiful Sky" that I wrote with Jim James. Jim and I really wrote the song just for the joy of writing a song, and both Jim and I thought it turned out really great. Then when Semisonic started recording, I asked him, "Would it be cool if I had the band try to cut it?" And he was, yeah, he was totally down. And I think that version, that song turned out great. And then Jim came in and played some crazy guitar on it, which was really also fun to get somebody else's guitar voice on our stuff.

Similarly, I had written some songs with Amy Allen, "The Rope," with Amy and Yves Rothman. And a "Little Bit of Sun," Amy helped me on that song.

And I had written a couple of songs with Lori McKenna, who's an amazing artist that everybody probably knows about that they ought to check out if you haven't heard her, and she and I wrote "Only Empathy," which I really love, and "Out of the Dirt." And those turned out to sound perfectly awesome when Semisonic played them.

And then the last collaboration that we did on the recording process was with Jason Isbell. We had gotten "Out of the Dirt" and a couple other songs to a point where I had sort of done everything I could on the guitar, and so I asked him would he play guitar on three of the songs and, and he seemed actually excited to do it, and the session was great. And so he played this kind of wild lead guitar on "Out of the Dirt," and some beautiful front porch acoustic on "Don't Fade Away," which I really love. And Jason also added all those kind of 80s British goth rock guitars on "Keep Me in Motion" right from the get go in the song. And that was a surprise, because I'd never heard Jason play like that. So yeah, we kind of opened the doors to maybe more guests on the record. And I really enjoyed that a lot.

Jill Riley: We're talking about the new Semisonic record, the full-length, Little Bit of Sun . You know, over the summer, Dan, I checked in with John Munson when you guys were on tour, when you were doing dates in Minnesota, you were doing dates with Barenaked Ladies. And then John had talked about the song, "Little Bit of Sun," and I remember asking him — kind of putting him on the spot, which I like to do — I said, "Hey, what does this mean? I mean, is this another standalone single? Does this mean a new record?" He goes, "I don't think I'm supposed to say anything yet." It was great! But it wasn't long after before there was the announcement that there was a full-length record coming. So that's very exciting.

And just great that you guys are back together, you know, bringing in some guests and collaborators. But really, you know, at your core, Dan Wilson, John Munson, Jake Slichter with a new Semisonic record. So Dan, congratulations on it. And thank you so much for telling us about making the record and kind of taking us a little behind the scenes. So congratulations on the record and everything that's going on with you and yes, of course, Minnesota will always be your home. You're always welcome back.

Dan Wilson: Thank you, Jill.

Jill Riley: You could always move back, just in time for winter, Dan. Just in time for winter.

Dan Wilson: There are times in the fall that I just feel this sort of desperate urge to move back, actually.

Jill Riley: Yeah, and we had a really pretty one this year. Well, Dan, you take care, and I'm sure we'll talk to you sometime down the road, OK?

Jill Riley: You are listening to The Current. The new Semisonic record is due out this Friday.

Semisonic

Launched following the dissolution of influential Twin Cities band Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic first emerged to widespread acclaim with their 1996 debut, Great Divide . While the album was a critical hit (Rolling Stone called it “a record of simple but sparkling modern pop, rattling with power-trio vitality”), the group’s commercial breakthrough didn’t arrive until the 1998 release of their sophomore album, Feeling Strangely Fine , which went platinum on the strength of its chart-topping lead single, “Closing Time.” Nominated for a GRAMMY, the track was a radio juggernaut that would go on to land in countless film and television soundtracks and come to define the sound of an entire decade of rock and roll. Years of gritting it out on the road eventually took its toll on the band, though, and after releasing one more album in 2001, the trio decided to part ways for an amicable but indefinite hiatus. During the group’s time apart, Slichter became a celebrated writer and commentator, contributing to the New York Times and NPR in addition to earning high praise for his 2004 memoir, So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star. He would go on to join the faculty at Sarah Lawrence, where he currently teaches creative nonfiction. Munson continued to make his career in music, performing and recording regularly with a variety of bands including The Twilight Hours, The Fragrants, and The New Standards, whose annual holiday show has been a Minneapolis staple for nearly 20 years. A lifelong lover of radio, he became the Music Director for American Public Media's WITS and a frequent guest host of Minnesota Public Radio's The Current . Wilson, meanwhile, moved to Los Angeles and established himself as one of the most prolific, diverse, and accomplished songwriters of the modern era, taking home an Album of the Year GRAMMY for Adele’s 21 (which featured three of his co-writes, including “Someone Like You”), earning a Song of the Year GRAMMY for “Not Ready To Make Nice” (one of six tracks he co-wrote on The Chicks’ Taking The Long Way ), and collaborating with living legends like Carole King, Celine Dion, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band; pop stars like Taylor Swift, Pink, and Leon Bridges; country artists like Chris Stapleton and Dierks Bentley; and indie rockers like My Morning Jacket, Mitski, Phantogram, and Claud among countless others. At the same time, Wilson also established himself as a celebrated solo artist, releasing a series of albums, EPs, and singles under his own name that found him working in the studio with everyone from Rick Rubin and Sheryl Crow to Sara Bareilles and Nickel Creek’s Sean and Sara Watkins. Though Semisonic would reunite sporadically through the years for one-offs and charity shows, Wilson wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to write for the band again until a creative breakthrough led him to You’re Not Alone . Released in 2020, the five-track EP brought the band back into the studio for the first time in two decades and earned glowing reviews from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Stereogum, and more. On Little Bit Of Sun , Semisonic’s first full-length album in more than 20 years, that hopeful spirit shines through. Recorded in the band’s native Minneapolis and featuring appearances from special guests including Jason Isbell and Jim James, the collection offers a deeply moving reflection on growth, gratitude, and commitment in the face of change and uncertainty. The songs walk a tightrope between raw energy and tender beauty, balancing power pop muscle with acoustic intimacy. Bassist John Munson and drummer Jacob Slichter’s performances are finely tuned to match, infusing Wilson’s bright, buoyant melodies with touches of melancholy and darkness that perpetually haunt the periphery. While it would be easy for a band like Semisonic to revel in nostalgia, Little Bit Of Sun instead looks to the past with appreciation rather than longing, pairing a profound thankfulness for the journey with an infectious excitement for all that’s still to come.

SOLD OUT: Richard Thompson: Ship To Shore Electric Full Band Tour

Revolution hall.

w/ Kacy & Clayton

Richard Thompson’s musical influence cannot be overstated. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the ‘60s, he and his bandmates invented the distinctive strain of British Folk Rock. He left the group by the age of 21 which was followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist. In 2011, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Los Angeles Times called him “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix” and Rolling Stone has named him one of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. He has received lifetime achievement awards for songwriting from the BBC Radio 2 Awards, the Americana Music Association, and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. His song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923.” A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and many more. His massive body of work includes many Grammy nominated albums as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man and 2019’s The Cold Blue. His genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with engaging energy and onstage wit continue to earn him new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos and writers in Folk Rock history. On May 31, 2024 Richard Thompson will release the anticipated Ship To Shore, his first studio album in six years.

Concert review: Promising start for K-pop boy band Zerobaseone at first concert here

semisonic band tour

2024 Zerobaseone The First Tour Timeless World In Singapore

Singapore Indoor Stadium Sept 28

A band commanding a Singapore Indoor Stadium crowd just a year after their debut is no mean feat. Yet, Zerobaseone have accomplished this.

The South Korean boy band managed to fill their 2½-hour-long concert with 25 original songs, a testament to what can be achieved in a short time through hard work.

Billed as the first fifth-generation K-pop group, they are on their Timeless World tour, which kicked off at Seoul’s KSPO Dome on Sept 20. Singapore is their first overseas stop, and the tour is slated to visit other cities such as Macau and Yokohama.

Zerobaseone were formed through the South Korean reality competition show Boys Planet (2023), with their nine members selected from the show’s 98 contestants.

There is leader Sung Han-bin, and members Kim Gyu-vin, Kim Ji-woong, Matthew Seok, Han Yu-jin, Zhang Hao, Kim Tae-rae, Ricky and Park Gun-wook.

Aged 17 to 25, the Gen Zers showcased many bright and upbeat numbers to the 8,000 fans at their show, accompanying the performance with warm and friendly banter. It was a promising start for the nonet, who have mostly never set foot in the Lion City before.

Here are three interesting facts about the new group.

1. Their debut EP set a record in sales

Released on July 10, 2023, Youth In The Shade became the first K-pop debut album to sell over one million copies in a day. Fans got to groove along to five of the work’s six tracks.

Cheery lead single In Bloom was performed against a flowering field animation with feel-good choreography. With air kisses and heart-shaped gestures, the group gave off a wholesome, boy-next-door vibe with this number, which samples the main riff of Norwegian band A-ha’s classic Take On Me (1984).

The aptly titled New Kidz On The Block was another standout number, opening with the group gathered in a huddle, before dispersing to all corners of the B-stage, hopping energetically to its optimistic and upbeat lyrics.

And in the sweet and breezy Am I, members donned cute accessories such as fuzzy cat ears and a fluffy white hat.

2. Before Zerobaseone, several members were active in the entertainment industry

semisonic band tour

Kim Ji-woong was a member of boy band INX from 2016 to 2017, going by the stage name Jinam. He was also part of K-pop groups Ateen in 2018 and B.I.T from 2019 to 2020, using the stage name King. All three groups have been disbanded.

Kim Tae-rae was a contestant on the singing reality show Top 10 Student in 2020, but did not make the finals.

Park Gun-wook competed in the singing reality show Wild Idol in 2021, in which trainees entered an extreme outdoor boot camp. He was eliminated in the final episode.

3. Two members are Chinese

It is not often that a K-pop group has a Chinese member. But Zerobaseone have two.

Shanghai-born Ricky, 20, was the youngest K-pop idol from China when the group debuted. Having attended school in Los Angeles, he said in fluent English during the show: “I am so happy that I am able to sing, dance and do the job that I love with you around me. You make my first Singapore visit the best one. We want to keep showing our sincere love to Zerose (the band’s fans), and make great music for you guys.”

Zhang Hao, who was the crowned champion in Boys Planet, is the first foreigner to place in the top spot in a South Korean idol reality show. Born in Xiamen, a city on China’s south-eastern coast, he was also the only member to perform a solo number on Sept 28 – the R&B ballad Always.

The Fujian Normal University graduate said in Mandarin during the show: “In the past, it was always you who travelled to South Korea to find us. I have wanted to come to Singapore for so long. And I hope that in these few short hours, you have been very happy.”

Idles

It’s easy to dip into hyperbole after seeing Idles play. If you want energy, rawness and showmanship from a concert, is any other band devoting this much of themselves to the live experience in 2024?

The British post-punk quintet — vocalist Joe Talbot, guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan, bassist Adam Devonshire and drummer Jon Beavis — is a swirling mass of passion and fiery emotion, marked by a heavy rhythm section, screaming guitars and Talbot’s aggressive shouted-sung sloganeering.

Popular on variety.

Amazingly, they remained high octane for their 24-song, two-hour show, sprinkling six “Tangk” songs into the career-spanning set. Highlights included an especially moody performance of the quiet-loud “Car Crash,” a chest-thumping rendition of Talbot’s recovery anthem “The Wheel,” the roaring “War,” and mosh-pit inspiring early single “Never Fight a Man with a Perm.”

The group’s live show is joyful, messy and feels dangerous in a way that few modern acts care to evoke. Talbot’s lyrics lend themselves to be shouted by the heaving masses, and while certain Britishisms get slightly lost in translation (it’s a bit odd to hear a swath of New Yorkers screaming in tandem about “the best way to scare a Tory,” but the message comes across), it’s mainly a righteous lefty fury. “Fuck the King,” “Fuck the Police” and “Viva Palestina” were shouted at the top of his lungs throughout the night, with Talbot introducing songs as being about addiction, the plight of immigrants, love and drugs.

Onstage, Idles felt like a powder keg ready to blow, turning a Queens audience into socially conscious soccer hooligans for the night.

The opening recently-reunited NYC mainstays The Walkmen, who, despite looking a bit grayer, sounded crisp and animated running through aughts-era indie rock anthems like “The Rat,” “Angela Surf City” and “What’s in It for Me.”
