Wonderful houseboat experience. Reasonably priced. The houseboat was neat and clean and well maintained. The food was so yum and indeed the Best Houseboats in Alleppey. Overall the much-awaited houseboat experience was worth the wait and made possible by Waves and Dales. They were gracious enough to let us check in early due to the Nationwide strike for which I would be grateful forever.

It was my family's first ever experience of houseboat and didn't expect it to be so awesome. Alleppey Houseboats cruise started on time and its your little house on water. Boat was neat and clean and so were the rooms. All the facilities were provided as mentioned while booking. As far as crew is concerned, their hospitality won our hearts. They were polite and prompt. Food was delicious.

It was our first visit in Kerala and Alleppey Houseboats made it such a precious and memorable experience, that i would love to visit again soon. Best hospitality with amazing food and cleanliness was great. Suggestion as per me is to have a bit long ride on Alleppey Houseboats as in our 21 hours of stay boat was on running for 4 hours only rest 17 hours it was parked on the bank. Which feels like waste of money.

Had an amazing time on this boat with my family, the staff were very respectful and cooperative, the food served was very delicious and hygienic. The boat was well maintained and clean. Of the many trips on the backwaters I have had, I would rate this one my best trip. Overall awesome experience. I strongly recommend Waves and Dales company. Thanks guys and keep it up. The check in time is 12 pm and check out time is 9 am.

2) How is the food in the houseboat?

All meals including Lunch, Dinner, Tea, Coffee, Snacks, and Breakfast are prepared exclusively for you on board by the houseboat crew. If you have specific preferences, let us know beforehand and our expert cooks will cook your meal the way you like. Mostly the menu includes Non-vegetarian dishes. In case you prefer Vegetarian, we will provide the same.

3) Is pick up and drop from Airport/Railway Station/Bus Stand provided?

Yes, pick up and drop from your destination is provided on request. It is chargeable.

4) Is Wi-Fi provided within the houseboat?

We are sorry but we do not provide Wi-Fi. We recommend you to entertain yourselves with the blissful scenes of the Alleppey countryside. On special request we do provide Wi-Fi facility which is chargeable.

5) Is extra bed provided?

Yes, 1 extra bed in each room is provided on request. It is chargeable and must be informed before you book your houseboat cruise.

6) How many hours does the cruise last?

Generally houseboat cruise starts at 12 pm and by 5:30 pm the boat will be anchored by the side of the backwaters. As per Government rules, night cruise is not allowed at the backwaters considering the fact that the locals spread fishing nets.

7) How many days houseboat cruise are provided?

Usually guest prefer 1 night houseboat cruise, however it can be extended on request.

Although throughout the year, Alappuzha experiences a pleasant weather, it is best to visit during December-February months are the peak season for Alleppey houseboat tourism. We had read that visiting the Kerala backwaters was a must when visiting Alleppey in India. According to The Lonely Planet , an Alleppey houseboat tour may be one of the most expensive things that you do in India, but it is well worth it. 

So naturally, we booked a houseboat tour and splurged on a cruise to the backwater canals and tributaries of Alleppey.

The Backwaters of Alleppey are known as God’s own country and we wholly agree.

Alleppey Houseboat Tour of the Kerala Backwaters

We had booked our backwaters tour while hanging out in Varkala having no idea what to expect.

After 2 1/2 hour on the train, a driver was waiting for us at the station to transfer us the jetty that would be our home for the next 24 hours.  We had heard that booking outside of Alleppey was not a smart idea. You could end up with an old rust bucket and be stuck on a terrible cruise. 

But we had a good feeling about our contact in Varkala and decided to chance it. It is much less hassle than walking to the jetty and haggling over a price. What a lovely surprise to see that we actually had a great boat.  Our houseboat was a spacious riverboat complete with bamboo cover and wicker furniture set up for a 24 hour adventure into the backwaters.

About Alleppey Houseboats

The traditional houseboat (‘Kettuvellam’ in Malayalam) are as elegant as they was historic.

The houseboats are made from old cargo vessels transformed into traditional houseboats. 

They are a beautiful design. Made from twine, wicker and bamboo.

The famous houseboats of Alleppey were made to float down the rivers and backwaters looking timeless.

Our houseboat was exactly what you would want for an exotic Asian Cruise adventure.

Cushions were set up all around the boat for us to sit and view the Kerala backwaters from any direction. 

A table was set up in the middle of the dark wooden frame and we were welcomed with fresh fruit and coconut juice.

All of this was shaded with a bamboo cover and we sat in luxury as we watched life go by on the river.

About the Kerala Backwaters

They Kerala Backwaters consist of lagoons, rivers, canals and lakes running parallel to the Arabian Sea from Varkala to Kerala in Southern India.

There are 900 km of waterways in Kerala with the vast Vembanad Lake in its centre.

The Kerala backwaters are known as the Venice of the East or the Land of Canals and this title certainly rings true in Kerala. 

The canals and rivers are the lifeblood of Kerala.

People live and work on the backwaters the way other places use roads and highways to commute to work.

Alleppey Backwaters – The Symbol of Kerala

The backwaters have always been the symbol of Kerala and we were mesmerized the moment we started our journey.

Lined with swaying palm trees dotted on both sides, it feels as if you have entered a time warp.

Houses line the riverbanks, there are schools on either side of the lake and we could even see small children studying in their classrooms.

Water taxis make regular runs like public buses would in a city, villages are built on canals, and shops and markets sit on the river banks.

There didn’t seem to be a reason for anyone to ever leave the backwaters of Kerala.

Private Houseboat

We started our backwaters houseboat tour from Alleppey (or Allappuzha) and that is where boarded our houseboat.

Another popular place to board houseboats in Kerala is Kumarakom. These are the two main hubs, but there are 900 km of waterways, so you can find houseboats at many cities along the route. Try looking in Kochi, Kottayam or Kollam as well.

Our tour began at 12:00 noon. We had a full day ahead of us to see life on the backwaters.

Life on the Houseboat

“Saji”, our chef got straight to work preparing our lunch as our trusty captain “Captain Kudappe” skillfully steered us through the narrow canals and vast lakes.

We had our one bedroom boat to ourselves. We splurged on our budget for this tour and explored the backwaters in style.

As we watched life go by around us, we ate grapes and bananas and lounged in the sun. When it got too hot, we turned on the fan.

And we hid under the bamboo canopy feeling the breeze of the fresh air.

We entered many small canals while cruising the lake.

The islands and paddy fields on either side were separated by lagoons, coconut groves, brooks and small gushing streams.

Feasts and Relaxation

The scenery is quite beautiful in the Kerala Backwaters and the chef-prepared food on our houseboat was excellent. 

We were fed 3 meals in total during our overnight trip.

Lunch when we boarded the boat at noon, dinner that evening, and breakfast the following morning. 

There was more food than we could possibly eat and it was an excellent assortment of Indian sauces with rice, chipatti and pappadam. 

Most of it was vegetarian, but we were also served lake fish with each meal.

You can let them know if you want vegetarian or meat ahead of time.

Fishermen and Vendors

Vendors will approach the boat and offer to sell prawns, but we declined. 

We had blown the budget enough on the trip and 900 rupees was a little steep for us.

I believe that it is well worth the money though.  These fishermen work hard for the prawns. 

They dive down to depths of 20 feet looking for shellfish. 

That water is dark and murky.  I wouldn’t want to even swim in it, let alone pull myself to great depths looking for fish.

I do wish that we brought some wine or beer on board with us. I would have loved to sip a cold beverage while enjoying the scenery.

Alas, we sipped tea as our thoughts were occasionally broken by chirpings by the cormorant cuckoos and egrets.

It’s A Long Time on a Houseboat

There are many options for houseboat tours from Alleppey. You can do a couple of hours, an overnight and even several days.

Boats range from small daytrippers to huge houseboats with several bedrooms. Our had one bedroom which was perfect for Dave and myself.

Be prepared, after you’ve watched life on the river for a few hours, the houseboat tour becomes a bit monotonous. 

It is a good time to read a book, meditate, or play a game of travel scrabble.

We found that a few hours is more than enough on a houseboat and really you can see all that you want to see in one afternoon.

But it is a romantic notion to sleep in the Kerala backwaters.

Nightime on the Houseboat

We tied up for the night at about 5:00 pm, as the sun was setting and ate our dinner at 7:00.

It is serene to be out there alone and to experience an overnight tour, takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the daytrippers and lets you see local life in a more intimate setting.

The bugs came out in full force and you couldn’t stay out and enjoy the evening for long after dinner. 

By 8:00 pm we were in bed under the safety of our mosquito blanket.

I would have liked to have anchored in the lake rather than mooring up to a dock. It took away from the authenticity of the experience.

Every time we ate, we moored the boat. 

It would have been so nice to anchor in the harbour or to keep driving.  We never seemed to dock at scenic areas either. 

All of the boats seemed to dock in groups as well.

Impression of Kerala Backwaters Tours

The Kerala Backwaters are a must see destination in India.

It was fascinating to see a glimpse of how every day life goes on in the area and the scenery was beautiful. 

Was the Alleppey houseboat tour worth the money? 

Yes. We had a private boat, chef and captain.

We toured all day through the backwaters and we were fed 3 delicious meals. (included)

Was the Alleppey Houseboat Tour an unforgettable experience?

Not really. We didn’t love it.  But we are glad we did it.

We would have liked to have been able to get off the boat to explore the villages of the backwaters and see the sites.

We took a similar trip in Vietnam to the Mekong Delta , and at the time, we mocked all our stops to get off the boat to see rice paper making factories and touring distilleries. On this in Kerala, we wished that we had something to do other than watching life from the sidelines.

Once we docked for the night we tried to relax to watch the sunset, but after it went down, there wasn’t a lot to do as we waited for dinner.

After dinner we went straight to bed because of the mosquitoes. Once the sun went down, the mosquitoes were brutal and we could have used a mosquito net on the boat.

Get an Air conditioned Houseboat

We recommend getting an air conditioned houseboat. 

It is hot at night and there isn’t much of a breeze. Plus the bugs are a plenty.  An air conditioned room would take care of all of the discomforts. 

We ended up having to sleep with our door and windows open and the fan on full force.

When to do a Backwaters Tour in Alleppey

It was November when we toured Alleppey and it was the perfect time to do a Kerala Backwaters Tour.

The busy season was still a couple of weeks away and the system wasn’t over crowded with house boats yet. 

I hear that it can become almost gridlock in the high season and I can believe it. We saw many houseboats parked waiting for the chaos to begin.

Peak season is said to be between September and February, but it doesn’t really pick up until December.

We were in Alleppey in November and it felt quite peaceful.

Other Times to Tour the Kerala Backwaters

If you want to go to the backwaters when there are few crowds, the monsoon season between June and August can be quiet and the rains can keep temperatures comfortable.

From March to May it is hot and humid so you will want to splurge on a houseboat with air conditioning. Although we felt that we could have used air conditioning in November.

How to Get to Alleppey

• The closest airport to Alleppey is the Cochin airport.
• It is a good idea to book transport in advance to your hotel or houseboat.
• Most tours leave from Alleppey and Kumarakom.
• Other popular ports are Kochi, Kottayam and Kollam.
• Kumarakom is approximately 70 kms from Cohin airport.
• We took a two hour India rail from Varkala to Alleppey.

Cost of Our Alleppey Houseboat Tour

We booked our tour in Advance while in Varkala with Om Shanthi Tours – Beside Cafe Italiano at North Cliff Beach for $135.00. Because we booked in India is was very reasonable. IOur tour included:

• Transfers from Train to Kingfisher Tours

The entire experience was very humbling. To see local people enjoying their lives in simple activities gave us a perspective and much-needed break from our hectic travel schedule.

Thanks for the detailed post. I have heard people say that they get bored on the overnight houseboat trip, but just to give an alternative experience- we loved it! One night wasn’t enough for us and we would have liked another night on the boat.

We just felt so chilled out and relaxed, and really enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. I think it depends if you are a person who can occupy themself, or who likes to be on the move all the time. We had plenty of books to read, journal writing to catch up on and a guitar to play, so along with watching the fascinating world go by we never got bored.

However, I would recommend combining a houseboat trip with other trips in the backwaters to get a fuller, more interactive experience. We did a village canoe trip from Kollam, and stayed at a wonderful homestay near Alleppey for 5 days. I’ve written more about our trip on my Kerala blog. Regards, Erin

Hi Shannon, Yes they do offer 1/2 day tours. You can go by canoe or covered boat and pay hourly. The houseboat was nice because you could go deep into the backwaters, but I think that you can get a good idea of life on the canals with a half day tour. So far, we have only experienced calm in India. It is going to be a big change once we get to the north. For now we are relishing our laid back time in the country.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE ALLEPPEY HOUSEBOATS

My friends and I opted to do an overnight Alappuzha boat house cruise and we boarded our boat at around 12 pm and set off down the enchanting Kerala backwaters .

After checking into our private rooms, a three-course lunch was served at the dining table towards the front of the houseboat.

A variety of Indian cuisine, such as curries, chicken, fish, dahl, and papadums went down a treat.

SLEEPING ON THE HOUSEBOAT

Shortly after sunset, our captain docked the houseboat to the edge of a canal for the night and the crew prepared another three-course dinner for the three of us.

Yet again, the food and hospitality were incredible!

Each bedroom has a large double bed, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a sitting area, a wardrobe, and an ensuite.

I slept like a baby on the Alleppey Boat House this night and woke up to the sun rising over the best backwaters in Kerala!

We enjoyed one last meal on board the Alleppey House Boats which included pancakes, fruits, tea, and coffee as we voyaged toward our final destination.

From here, a car transfer was waiting to take us to our next hotel.

• To explore Alleppey’s local areas at night or to traverse into small canals during the day, you’ll have to ditch your houseboat and charter a small boat.

Much like the famed shikaras of Dal Lake in the Indian state of Kashmir, shikaras in Kerala are long boats with a roof and comfortable seating that can accommodate up to 4-5 persons at a time and is a good option for anyone to enjoy a backwater cruise if you find houseboat expensive.

They are perfect for exploring the backwaters during the day when the sun is out and the weather’s hot and dry.

Advantages of shikaras in Alleppey :

• Fewer people opt for shikaras as compared to houseboats and ferries, so you won’t be left waiting in long queues before you board one of these.
• It has a roof that provides shade against the blazing sun.
• These are way cheaper than houseboats.
• A shikara has cushioned seats and sunbeds which makes it ideal for a long boat ride in Alleppey lasting 2-3 hours.
• Unlike houseboats and ferries, shikaras can venture into small canals and waterways, letting you explore offbeat and hidden places in the backwaters of Kerala.

Disadvantages of shikaras in Alleppey:

• Most shikaras in Kerala operate on a sharing basis and lacks privacy, so you may end up in the boat with other tourists unless you’re willing to pay extra for a private one.
• Shikaras may be cheaper than houseboats, but they are still more expensive than ferries and canoes, especially if you opt for a private shikara.
• Despite the roof, it’s an open boat that can be quite difficult to sit in during really hot days or peak afternoon hours.

A canoe is a slender wooden rowboat. It is a simple and small boat that fits not more than 1-2 or 3-4 people at once, where each is required to paddle either side of the boat using long oars.

You can either row these traditional country boats yourself or hire a boatman to take you around while you focus solely on enjoying your breezy canoe boat ride in Alleppey. You can journey through narrow canals and remote villages in these canoes, as they are lean enough to worm their way through tight spaces.

It is usually too hot in Alleppey to cover long distances on a canoe. So, it is recommended that you cover most of the distance by a ferry or houseboat, and then hire a canoe for the rest of the way.

Advantages of canoes in Alleppey:

• They can crawl into tight spaces and narrow canals, allowing you to explore remote local villages and see parts of Alleppey that you can’t otherwise access in a houseboat or ferry.
• Just like shikaras, they are eco-friendly and a noiseless means of travel in Alleppey.
• Canoes are also the cheapest boats available in Alleppey and is an eco friendly option.
• These silent and discreet boats are also highly preferred by birdwatching enthusiasts as their presence doesn’t scare off aviaries.
• A canoe’s boatman is more likely to know all the tranquil and hidden spots in the backwaters compared to others since canoes are most commonly used by locals in Alleppey.
• Sailing on a slow and steady canoe is the most peaceful experience in the backwaters of Kerala during sunset and sunrise.
• They are the most traditional means of traveling around Kerala backwaters. If you wish to explore Kerala like a local, these small boats in Alleppey are your best bet!

Disadvantages of canoes in Alleppey:

• Paddling a canoe can be a tiring and back-breaking affair. It is recommended only for people with good physical strength and stamina.
• Canoes are not shaded, so you can’t expect to cover long distances in these under the sun.
• Canoes are slow. If you wish to cover several places at once, these boats are not recommended.
• These can get too hot to paddle in the day, and sailing them after dark isn’t a good idea. They’re mostly ideal for an early morning trip.
• The seats aren’t comfortable enough for a journey lasting more than an hour.

4. Government ferry

Government ferries, or public ferries, are used by locals and tourists to commute from one end of the town to another. These are the most economical means of public transport in Alleppey operating as per the schedule and rates set down by the Kerala State Water Transport Department .

These are large boats that run at regular intervals between various points in Alleppey, the schedule of which is available on KSWTD’s official website.

While some of these are intended for local commute and take people from one point to another, others are merely tourist boats that travel around key attractions of Alleppey’s backwaters and then bring the passengers back to the same jetty. Make sure you pick the right ferry as per your itinerary for a convenient boat ride in Alleppey.

You can sit either on the lower deck and stay away from the warm weather and the sun, or you can sit on the upper deck and enjoy panoramic views of Alleppey’s gorgeous backwaters. Tourists and photographers generally prefer to sit on the upper deck.

Most of these ferries ply from the Alleppey Central Boat Station and SWTD Boat Jetty, both of which are located within walking distance from the Alappuzha bus station.

Advantages of public ferries in Alleppey:

• You get to experience Kerala’s scenic backwaters at a very nominal rate on this government-operated boat ride in Alleppey.
• You can choose to sit in the shaded lower deck to get away from the city’s heat.
• You can gaze at panoramic views of Alleppey backwaters stretching into the horizon from the spacious upper deck.
• Since ticket prices of government ferries in Alleppey are incredibly low, you can plan well and cover a lot more places of interest in Alleppey than through other boats.
• There are several stops along the main Alappuzha canal marked in black and white stripes where passengers can get down and explore spots like shops, temples, churches, and toddy shacks before catching the next boat from there.
• Many inter-city ferries also operate from Alappuzha taking people to towns like Kottayam, Kollam, Kumarakom, Thottapally, and more.

Disadvantages of public ferries in Alleppey:

• Public ferries are really noisy.
• Like any other public transport unit, most of these ferries are really old and unclean.
• Public ferries in Alleppey cause a lot of air and water pollution.
• There is a set schedule for each ferry and if you miss the boat, you’ll have to wait for the next one, while other boats in Alleppey are readily available.
• Since these boats operate on a strict schedule to cover a specific set of places in Alleppey, you’ll have to tweak your travel plans accordingly and you may end up missing out on local experiences and offbeat places here.
• Seats are available on a first come first serve basis, so if you have a dock preference (upper or lower), book your ticket well in advance.

Note: To cover a maximum number of places in Alleppey via a public ferry, make sure you start early in the day. The last ferry usually leaves at 3-4 PM, so plan your day accordingly.

Alleppey government ferry price: Between INR 10/- and INR 100/- depending on the final destination. Inter-city ferry rates may differ.

5. Motorboats

Travelers who visit the calm and tranquil backwaters of Kerala from far-off places seeking peace and relaxation give the least preference to noisy motor boats in Alleppey.

However, they aren’t entirely unpopular since they can cover twice the amount of places in Alleppey than slow rowboats, shikaras, canoes, and houseboats.

Many small-sized motorboats can also venture into narrow canals where houseboats, ferries, and sometimes even shikaras can’t go. They can usually accommodate 2-10 people and cost around INR 250/- to INR 300/- per hour .

You can also hire these on a “day package” basis which allows you to cover lots of tourist spots in Alleppey at nominal rates. A motorboat day package in Alleppey usually costs about INR 700/- and includes snacks and beverages. Don’t forget to inquire about the inclusions before opting for the day package.

Kayaks are very small and lightweight boats made with a water-tight frame and a small opening in the top for not more than 1-2 people to sit in. One can propel it using long, double-bladed paddles.

Advantages of kayaks in Alleppey:

• These lightweight boats are easy to paddle, allowing one to cover long distances with ease and without getting tired.
• Kayaks allow close interaction with Alleppey’s serene backwaters and its thriving flora and fauna, enabling one to quietly observe animals and birds without disturbing them.
