Taxable vs Tax Free Pay

Following on from our pay example above, your travel nurse pay is made up of a taxable hourly wage and tax free income.

Notice that more than half of this pay package is tax free pay. Ka-ching!

Your tax free stipends, or "Per Diem" pay, are based on daily maximum rates set by the government.  Check  gsa.gov's Per Diem rates  for your next contract location.

Travel nurses are eligible for Per Diem tax free stipends when working away from your permanent tax home. When receiving tax free pay you MUST duplicate living/housing expenses, required per IRS rules.

This means paying fair market prices for both your accommodation at your travel nursing assignment, AND maintaining your own housing at your permanent tax home.

Many agencies also offer travel reimbursements to help you get money back you spent on travel expenses moving between assignments.

Pro tip: You can still "travel nurse" while living in your own housing at your permanent tax home. The difference is your income will be fully taxed, and you won't be eligible for the the tax free travel nursing pay.

Travel nurses are RNs from various clinical backgrounds who work for independent staffing agencies. They are assigned to different care areas on a temporary basis to fill in short-term employment gaps.

Travel nursing is a specialty that took root when the field of nursing faced a nationwide shortage. Hospitals, clinics, and other care areas had unfilled positions, yet had patients needing care. To try and attract nurses to the open positions, employers offered higher pay, housing, and covered the cost of relocating.

Due to these shortages, health care facilities have vacancies that need to be filled—and travel nurses are often the ones to fill open positions. Not only do travel nurses work in health care in any state in the country, but they also work outside of the United States as international travel nurses. The adventure and excitement of new opportunities, along with higher-than-average pay, are facets of travel nursing that many RNs find attractive.

Why Are Travel Nurses Important?

Travel nurses are an important part of the health care team because they help bridge the gap between supply and demand in the field of nursing. Mandatory nurse-patient ratios have led to increased patient safety and lower patient mortality . While this is a positive finding, and more and more states are passing legislation to implement staffing ratios, there are not enough nurses to fill the openings. Travel nurses assigned those open positions help to increase patient safety and improve patient outcomes.

Additionally, nurses from different educational backgrounds, care areas, and geographic locations bring a great deal to the practice of nursing. Sharing ideas and practices not only benefits patients, but also other nurses.

A travel nurse should have the following characteristics to excel in the role:

• Enjoys experiencing new cities, towns, and organizations
• Enjoys freedom. Travel nurses choose when and where they work, and choose their duration of employment
• Enjoys flexibility. Travel nurses create their schedules, benefits packages, and income based on which agency they choose to work
• Thrives on challenges. Moving to different states or overseas and being “the new nurse” repeatedly is challenging. Learning new organizational systems and workflows is particularly challenging
• Loves learning new things. Each assignment takes travel nurses to new health care facilities, some with higher levels of technology or different standards of practice. Each experience helps nurses build upon their knowledge base

Additionally, travel nurses should have supportive families and friends. It's difficult to either pack up and move an entire family or leave your family and friends behind. The flip side to this is that new relationships are formed in each new location.

What Are the Educational Requirements for Travel Nurses?

Those interested in the specialty of travel nursing should first pursue a nursing degree through a two or four-year university. Obtaining an associate's degree ( ADN ) or bachelor's degree ( BSN ) in nursing is required. A BSN is not required to be a travel nurse, but some health care facilities only hire BSN-prepared nurses. The staffing agency in which the nurse is employed should match the nurse appropriately based on educational requirements.

After completion of an accredited nursing program, successful completion of the NCLEX-RN is required for licensure.

Most travel nurse agencies require a minimum of one year of hands-on experience in the chosen specialty of nursing. Additionally, some agencies will only hire BSN-prepared RNs. International travel nurses should speak the language of the country they are to practice in, as communication is an important part of effective healthcare delivery. Nurses are encouraged to research agencies when considering travel nursing.

Are Any Certifications or Credentials Needed?

No additional exams are required for travel nursing. Based on the specialty, certification(s) may be required. Examples include:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required
• Stroke care certification
• Telemetry certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Critical care nursing (adults, pediatric, neonatal)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification

Additional specific requirements may be necessary for international travel nurses. These include:

• Acquiring a passport and work visa (usually handled by the agency)
• Additional immunizations
• Learning a new language
• Learning about diseases unique to the area

How Can a Travel Nurse Receive a Tax-Free Housing Stipend?

Housing is one of the most significant concerns for a travel nurse. There are a few options available, and it depends on the travel nurse agency/company regarding how accommodations are set up. Some companies provide housing (i.e., apartment, duplex, etc.). Some companies offer a housing stipend, or a fixed amount of money each month to apply towards housing.

First, nurses need to be aware of where their “tax home” is, as stipends are tax-free if working away from the tax home. Having a tax home is necessary to receive tax-free housing. A "tax home" is defined as the general vicinity of an individual's primary place of work (regardless of where the primary residence is). Generally, the IRS considers someone traveling away from home (i.e., their "tax home") if it exceeds one workday.

Different travel nurse agencies offer different stipends - it’s important to research what the living expenses are in a specific area to ensure housing is adequately covered. The General Services Administration (GSA) lists the maximum daily amount for lodging, meals, and incidentals with regards to travel expenses . The key word is MAXIMUM. It's not required that a company pay employees the listed stipend. In fact, some travel nurse agencies offer higher hourly wages instead of housing stipends. Additionally, the GSA rates are based on short-term travel - usually less than a month. Travel nurse contracts can last three months or more.

Are Nursing Licenses Valid When Traveling and Working in Other States?

Those interested in travel nursing may have questions about licensing; specifically, how are licenses recognized if practicing in another state.

Depending on the state, new licensure is not necessary. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the Nurse Licensure Compact which is an agreement between specific states to recognize nursing licenses without having to apply separately for licensure in another state. In other words, a nurse living in a "compact state" (one which is part of this agreement) can practice in another compact state without having to obtain additional licenses. There are now uniform licensure requirements that must be met when seeking a multistate license under the compact agreement. States that participate in the compact agreement can be found on the NCSBN website .

If not part of the compact agreement, some states allow nurses to obtain temporary licenses by endorsement. These are valid for specific lengths of time, so nurses must visit each state’s Board of Nursing website to determine specific temporary license requirements. If extending the assignment past the temporary license time frame, nurses must apply for a permanent license. Permanent licenses are also required for states that don't grant licensure by endorsement and don't participate in the NLC.

Travel nurses have a broad range of responsibilities and duties, and specific tasks depend on the specialty in which the nurse is trained. General nursing responsibilities and duties include:

• Using the nursing process of assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating to care for patients in a variety of healthcare settings
• Administering medications, and fluids, assisting with activities of daily living and patient mobility
• Reviewing and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and imaging
• Provide monitoring and oversight in all aspects of patient care
• Collaborating with physicians in developing a plan of care
• Assessing the psychosocial needs of patients and families
• Recognizing and intervening in clinically unstable patients
• Providing resources for patients and referring as necessary
• Educating patients and families in all areas of healthcare maintenance and prevention
• Working in assignments anywhere from eight to thirteen weeks (on average) in the U.S., one to two years if outside the U.S.
• Learning various patient care systems/documentation
• Providing immediate medical care and aid for large populations during times of war or disaster

Domestic and international travel nurses also have different characteristics specific to their roles.

Domestic Travel Nurses

• Work within the U.S.
• Typically work assignments that range from eight to thirteen weeks
• Can respond to areas of the U.S that experience natural disasters or disease outbreaks

International Travel Nurses

International travel nurses should have excellent communication skills, should be open to new experiences and challenges, and should have a strong desire to learn. These nurses are responsible for performing a wide array of duties. As stated previously, the tasks an international nurse will have to perform depend entirely upon their medical specialty. Some of the more general or everyday tasks that international travel nurses will perform include administering medication, wound care, and providing emergency medical services and care. Since there are often nursing shortages in many of the regions that international nurses travel to, another general role of these nurses is to educate family members and caretakers about the appropriate patient and medical care. In summary, international travel nurses:

• Work outside the U.S.
• Typically work assignments that range from one to two years
• Respond to areas that experience natural disasters or disease outbreaks, such as the Ebola outbreak in West Africa
• Provide medical care and aid to underserved, rural , and remote populations
• Usually, must wait for document processing before traveling

Travel Nurse Working Conditions

As with any career, there are positive and negative aspects to working as a travel nurse. Nurses can suffer from stress as they may carry a heavy patient load and have many critical decisions to make. Additionally, travel nurses may suffer from feelings of isolation since they tend to relocate often. Having a strong sense of independence and a support system available, even remotely, can help.

Additionally, nurses may work in high-risk areas that may expose them to workplace violence, blood-borne pathogens, and chemicals. Travel nurses must always familiarize themselves with and adhere to safety standards set by the organization.

International travel nurses can face different challenges. Travel nurses must be familiar with the country's laws, and geographic-specific diseases, and always keep their overall safety as a priority.

Despite these considerations, travel nursing can be immensely rewarding. Many organizations and staff nurses appreciate the help travel nurses offer. Travel nurses help relieve staff nurses from burnout, as can happen when working short-staffed.

International travel nurses are also highly appreciated. They provide medical care and assistance to many patients in remote settings who otherwise would have no access to healthcare. They help with relief efforts in war zones or after disaster events, which can be both rewarding and enriching.

According to the American Nurses Association, as of 2015 fourteen states had mandatory nurse-patient ratios . Nurses are pushing for federal legislation supporting safe staffing and because of this, if more states pass safe-staffing laws, nurses will be in even more demand. Travel nurses will help mend the current and projected nursing shortage. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 16% overall growth for nurses until 2024, which is much faster-than-average growth for all occupations.

Travel nursing has many incentives for nurses regarding pay and benefits including:

WHAT IS A TRAVEL NURSE’s SALARY?

As with staff registered nurse salaries, a travel nurse’s salary can vary quite a bit depending on where you are in the country and what type of nursing you are going to do (medical-surgical vs. critical care, for example). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the median pay in 2021 for nurses was $37.31 an hour, or an annual salary of $77,600 per year; according to Indeed.com, the hourly rate for a travel nurse is $46.80 an hour. However, as a travel nurse, the best approach when comparing compensation packages is to focus on weekly net pay. This is the estimated net amount that will be deposited into your account for working the contracted weekly hours essentially, your actual take-home pay. HOW IS WEEKLY NET PAY CALCULATED?

To calculate net pay , subtract the estimated weekly taxes from the weekly taxable wage and add the remainder to the total weekly tax-free stipends to calculate the weekly net pay for a contract. Back to our conversation with Home Secretary James Cleverly, who was asked about Nigel Farage's U-turn over running to become an MP in Essex.

Mr Farage is now the leader of Reform UK, and a candidate for the party.

But Mr Cleverly tells Sky News that Reform is simply a "vehicle" for Mr Farage's "self-promotion".

"I think Richard Tice is now discovering that rather painfully."

Mr Tice was, until yesterday, the leader of the party.

"Keir Starmer would love people to vote Reform because he knows that a vote for Reform basically opens the door to a Labour government," Mr Cleverly says.

Turning to immigration, the home secretary claims that shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper's "big reveal" over migration "already exists".

Labour has pledged to launch a new Border Security Command, but Mr Cleverly says this is the same as the "Small Boats Operational Command".

He adds this is "really embarrassing for the shadow home secretary". 

Never shy of a photo opportunity, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has provided us with a rather literal interpretation of his party's bid to bring down the so-called Blue Wall at this election.

Just as the Tories took chunks out of the Red Wall (Labour's traditional strongholds) back in 2019, the Lib Dems are hoping to do the same to the Conservatives this time.

Today Sir Ed is in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, which was won by the Tories with a 46% share of the vote last time out.

His party came second with 41.8%, so it's a big target.

Sir Ed was there this morning with local candidate Tom Morrison, where they enjoyed a spot of appropriately-themed Jenga…

The other candidates in Cheadle are:

• Alexander Frank Richard Drury, Greens;
• Kelly Fowler, Labour;
• Tanya Manzoor, Workers Party;
• Mary Robinson, Conservatives.

Labour is reiterating its pitch to voters today - stability.

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, has been outlining the party's economic policy in Edinburgh. 

It boils down to: "This is a change election, and stability is change after the 14 years that we have had."

She adds: "It's only with stability that we can grow our economy and improve living standards for ordinary working people."

This stability, she says, would come through a "tough set of economic rules" - including paying for "day-to-day spending through tax receipts".

However, she says, stability on its own is not enough - the UK "needs investment" and she also mentions reform.

Ms Reeves is in Edinburgh as the party continues to try to win back Scottish voters to help it get back to power, with Labour having been decimated by the SNP since the 2015 general election.

Who's got time to come up with policies when you've got absolutely critical decisions to make over what to wear on the campaign trail?

Jokes aside, some attention has been paid to the fashion choices of both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer in recent days.

The prime minister, whose fondness for Adidas Samba shoes had already made headlines before the election kicked off, raised eyebrows with his pricey rucksack when he got the sleeper train to Cornwall.

It was reported to be a £750 luxury backpack from Tumi, monogrammed with his initials.

'Legal attire won't cut the mustard'

And then there was Sir Keir's £500 jacket from French fashion brand Sandro, which he wore while visiting Blackpool.

Sarah Gray, a personal stylist and image consultant, told Kay Burley 's Breakfast programme the two leaders do need to look the part.

Their dress sense can help them "appeal to a wide audience", and make them appear "more approachable" and "recognisable".

Sir Keir, she says, is "most definitely realising his legal attire's not going to cut the mustard" in his role as Labour leader.

But she says both Mr Sunak and Sir Keir would want to be careful about wearing pricey attire in "less affluent" areas.

Farage has 'sharpened up' his suits

She also noticed a slight change in the cut of Nigel Farage's suit when he announced he was taking over Reform and running for parliament on Monday afternoon.

"We could see he's sharpened up," she said.

And long gone is the purple UKIP-coloured tie of election campaigns from years gone by - this time it was decorated with butterflies, which symbolises "transformation", Gray said.

Today, Labour's ruling committee will approve the final list of candidates going forward for election - including Diane Abbott.

As Sir Keir Starmer reiterated this morning, she's free to stand for the party once again - though the leader admitted he hasn't spoken to her for several months ( see 10.13 post ).

After a week of accusations that Sir Keir's tried to purge the party's left, Labour's 650 prospective MPs should be rubber-stamped in a short online meeting at midday. 

Sir Keir will hope this process by the National Executive Committee draws a line under the controversy over treatment of Ms Abbott, after briefings - apparently incorrect - the leadership wanted to bar her. 

The Labour leader has a majority on the NEC and his will goes.

Recriminations have surrounded the process, not least because various Sir Keir loyalists on the 40-member NEC have themselves been selected.

Faiza Shaheen, a Jeremy Corbyn-supporting economist who was dropped as a candidate in Chingford and Woodford Green over social media posts, has claimed the Labour Party is "institutionally racist". 

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, the left-wing MP for Brighton Kemptown since 2017, claimed he was suspended over a complaint from eight years ago.

He told my colleague Serena Barker-Singh today: "The system is wrong. There's a danger it looks like cronyism or 'Jobs for the boys'."

As one Labour insider put it: "The Labour Party love to get bogged down in process, but hopefully this soap opera can now come to an end."

Meanwhile, the Tories still have dozens of seats to select. 

 Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer was asked whether the Labour Party would guarantee to reduce net migration year-on-year, as has been pledged by the Conservatives.

He didn't give a straight answer, but did reiterate that migration is "far too high".

Sir Keir says: "The Conservatives have let immigration get out of control, we've got record numbers of people coming to this country. 

"And they've now said they're going to have a visa cap, they've not said what the number is.

"We did have a visa cap before, Rishi Sunak argued to get rid of it - which they did in 2020 - and now they're going back to it but without a number."

Asked again whether Labour could guarantee this drop, Sir Keir would only say he wants immigration to "come down".

 Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is in Greater Manchester, where he has been discussing the row around Diane Abbott.

He is asked about a social media post which claims he was lying about "having respect for her" as a Labour candidate in Hackney North and Stoke Newington.

Has he spoken to Ms Abbott since then?

"We have dealt with the Diane Abbott issue," Sir Keir says.

"The choice is continue with the chaos of division or turn the page with Labour." 

The Labour leader says Ms Abbott "will be part of that".

Asked again, he says: "I spoke to Diane two or three months ago."

Our political correspondent Mhari Aurora   is hearing Rishi Sunak could soon suffer yet more defections.

Rather than to Labour, where three Tories have moved to recently - Mark Logan, Natalie Elphicke, and Dan Poulter - Mhari's hearing some may be heading for Reform UK.

It comes after a double dose of bad news for the Tories on an "absolutely fascinating" night for the election campaign, which saw Nigel Farage announce he was taking over as Reform leader and standing for parliament himself for an eighth time.

He'll be going for the seat of Clacton.

Less than an hour later, a "bombshell poll" projected a huge majority for Labour, even bigger than Tony Blair's 1997 landslide.

Mhari says Farage's return and the poll "has really shaken some Tories", adding: "I've been speaking to some Tories this morning who have been telling me they're expecting some potential defections to Reform after that.

"It will be interesting how this starts to play out - how much the Tory party can keep things together, or if things start to fall apart."

The Welsh government has put plans to cut the summer holidays on hold.

Under the proposals, the summer holiday would be reduced by one week, with an extra week added for October half term.

But Wales's education secretary Lynne Neagle has announced no decision will be made before the next Senedd election in 2026.

That means that any future changes to the school year are unlikely to be introduced before 2028.

It is the second time in a month that Welsh government policy has been shelved, after plans for a new farm subsidy scheme were put on hold following protests among farmers.

Until voters go to the polls on 4 July, the Politics Hub will be looking back at some memorable moments from previous general election campaigns.

Ahead of tonight's debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, a reminder of the potential pitfalls for politicians on TV.

Labour had been tipped to return to power at the 2015 election, but some bruising TV appearances for then leader Ed Miliband likely didn't help the party's chances by the end of the campaign.

One such memorable telly stint saw him grilled on Sky News by famed political interrogator Jeremy Paxman about whether he was "tough enough" for the job of prime minister.

Leaning forward, Mr Miliband shared an anecdote about the UK government's desire to intervene in Syria that year, in line with the US under then president Barack Obama.

He told Paxman how he was "called into a room" to speak to the prime minister, David Cameron, and his deputy, Nick Clegg, fresh off the phone with Mr Obama, and ultimately decided to vote against taking action.

"Standing up to the leader of the free world shows a certain toughness," said Mr Miliband.

Defending his record on foreign policy, he concluded his point with the immortal words: "Am I tough enuss... tough enough? 

"Hell yes, I'm tough enough."

Sir Keir Starmer could be heading to Downing Street with a majority of 194 seats, bigger than what Tony Blair achieved in 1997, according to the first polling projection by YouGov of the campaign.

The projection shows a historic Labour landslide, with the party getting the highest number of seats of any party at an election in history.

At the same time, the Tories are trying to boost ratings by talking about culture wars while Labour is talking about real wars in terms of what they would do for defence. And Nigel Farage has announced he's standing for Reform UK.
