late 14c., "tread or step lightly and nimbly, skip, dance, caper," from Old French triper "jump around, dance around, strike with the feet" (12c.), from a Germanic source (compare Middle Dutch trippen "to skip, trip, hop; to stamp, trample," Low German trippeln , Frisian tripje , Dutch trappen , Old English treppan "to tread, trample"). The group is from the source of trap (n.).  Related: Tripped ; tripping .

The senses of "to stumble" (intransitive), "strike with the foot and cause to stumble" (transitive) are from mid-15c. in English. The meaning "to release" (a catch, lever, etc.) is recorded from 1897; trip-wire is attested from 1868.

The old sense of "dance, caper, move nimbly" was common in the Elizabethan dramatists ("Trip it, gipsies, trip it fine") and is preserved in the archaism trip the light fantastic (toe) for "to dance," based on a couplet from Milton:

Come and trip it, as you go,

On the light fantastic toe ; 

["L'Allegro"]

The short version, omitting toe , is attested by 1847. He has a similar phrasing in the invitation to the dance in "Comus":

Come, knit hands, and beat the ground

In a light fantastic round.

"act or action of tripping" (transitive), early 14c., from trip (v.); the sense of "a short journey or voyage" is from mid-15c.; the exact connection to the earlier sense is uncertain. The meaning "psychedelic drug experience" is attested from 1959 as a noun; the verb in this sense is from 1966, from the noun.

The sense of "deceitful practice, device or contrivance to betray one" is recorded from c. 1400. The meaning "U-shaped section of a drain pipe" is from 1833. Slang meaning "mouth" is from 1776. Speed trap is by 1908. Trap-door "door in a floor or ceiling" (often hidden and leading to a passageway or secret place) is attested from late 14c. ( trappe-dore ).

Akin to Middle Low German trippen ( > Danish trippe ( “ to trip ” ) , Swedish trippa ( “ to mince, trip ” ) ), West Frisian tripje ( “ to toddle, trip ” ) , German trippeln ( “ to scurry ” ) , Old English treppan ( “ to trample, tread ” ) . Blue Origin Hasn't Announced Ticket Prices, but Most Can't Afford It

Blue Origin tickets are going at a “really good price,” even as much as $28 million.

Blue origin could charge customers upward of $200,000 for the first spaceflights., how much did michael strahan pay for his blue origin flight ticket.

How much does it cost to fly on Blue Origin ? The company isn’t saying, nor is Michael Strahan , the Good Morning America anchor who blasted off on a Blue Origin rocket on Dec. 11, 2021.

In July 2021, after his own spaceflight, Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos said he and his colleagues “didn’t know quite yet” when the company would publicly divulge its price for a ticket to space. “Right now we’re doing really well with private sales,” he added, reports The New York Times . But intel from 2018 may hint at Blue Origin’s current pricing strategy. Read on, future astronauts.

Presumably, not all Blue Origin tickets cost $28 million, which was the winning bid at a charity auction in June 2021. The winning bidder had to reschedule their flight, so their ticket went to Dutch teenager Oliver Daemen, whose father, a private equity executive, placed the next-highest bid .

“We think we had 7,500 people in the auction from over 150 countries,” Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith said in July 2021, reports GeekWire . “Generally, there’s really high interest. So the question really gets down to what’s the price point. Our early flights are going for a very good price. You saw the interest during the auction was quite high. We had people well into the twenties [$20 million], all very interested. Some of that was skewed, obviously, by the auction.”

Two Blue Origin employees spoke anonymously to Reuters in July 2018. One of those workers, an employee “with first-hand knowledge of the pricing plan,” said Blue Origin planned to charge customers about $200,000 to $300,000. The second employee corroborated those figures, saying the tickets would cost $200,000 at minimum.

If so, Blue Origin would be offering “spacefares,” so to speak, close to those of rival company Virgin Galactic . As Slate reports, the Richard Branson company was offering ticket reservations for $250,000 before a test crash grounded the spaceflight program in 2014. Now that the program is up and running—with Branson and others making a suborbital flight in July 2021 — analysts project that Virgin Galactic tickets will cost between $300,000 and $400,000.

Despite the speculation, it appears Blue Origin flight tickets may be based on who you are and who you know. While some have had their tickets comped by the one and only Bezos, others have paid well into the millions for a chance to experience space aboard a Blue Origin rocket. Needless to say, you better start saving!

On Good Morning America on Nov. 23, 2021, co-host Michael Strahan — a former NFL star who played for the New York Giants — announced that he would join a December 2021 Blue Origin spaceflight. He’s the latest celebrity to venture into the great beyond, following the October spaceflight of William Shatner. CNN reported that Strahan and Laura Shepard Churchley — daughter of NASA pioneer Alan Shepard and another passenger of the flight — were “honorary guests” and didn't pay for their tickets.

“I believe that this is the way of being innovative, creative, pioneers in aviation, now space travel,” Strahan said on Nov. 23, 2021. “And it’s going to take a while, but I do believe that it will bring a lot of technological breakthroughs and also innovations to us here on Earth, and I just want to be a part of it.”

Road tripping: from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park

Senior Director of Content Laura Motta loves the American West for its intense beauty, endless layers of human and natural history, and its full-on sense of weirdness. She took a road trip from Las Vegas to Great Basin National Park. Here's what she encountered on the way.

• When to arrive: Arrive at Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport as early in the day as you can. This road trip requires a lot of driving in remote areas, and you'll want to reach your lodging in the town of Ely while it's daylight.
• Getting there: Great Basin National Park is about 300 miles from either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City , making it one of the most remote national parks in the US. To reach it, you will have to drive. And drive. Book a rental car that can handle inclines and dirt or rocky roads. If you attempt this road trip in the winter –  not recommended for those who don't have experience driving in tough weather conditions –   you will also need snow chains for your tires. I did this trip solo, but would recommend doing it with a partner so you can switch-off being in the driver's seat.
• Getting around: You'll spend much of this trip on Nevada Rte 93. Pay attention to roadside signs for gas. Stretches of this road run hundreds of miles without a single gas station, and you don't want to get stuck. It's also a good idea to pack water and snacks. Parts of Great Basin are 13,000ft above sea level and it's not uncommon to see light snow cover and overnight frosts from spring to fall. In winter, expect feet of snow and road closures.
• What to pack: A trip from Vegas to Great Basin means packing for two climates —  the burning Mojave and the arid high desert. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must for the trails in Great Basin National Park. Pack layers, as you can expect cool or even cold weather at night. For Vegas? Shorts for daytime, a cocktail getup for evening and a swimsuit should do it. One thing you'll need and use in both places: sunblock and sunglasses.

Day 1: Route 93 to Ely

Take a look around.

As you drive north out of Las Vegas along US Rte 93, the Great Basin Highway, the flat desert falls away and the mountains rise up on either side. They are green, then craggy brown, then blue-gray in the distance. This is America at its most expansive and mind-bogglingly beautiful, and the view out your car windows is as much your "destination" as anything else you'll see on this trip.

See if the truth is out there

Two hours north of Las Vegas, Rte 93 intersects with Rte 375 —  a desolate stretch of road known as the Extraterrestrial Highway. This is as close as you'll get to Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base that spawned persistent conspiracy theories and rumors of alien research. Knowing visitors are forbidden, I made a quick stop in the town of Hiko instead to visit some quirky and definitely unclassified sites that capture the area's kitsch factor. E.T. Fresh Jerky is a gift shop that specializes in "alien" (actually beef) jerky. It makes a good snack for the drive. Plus, there are some fun, photo-ready items in the parking lot (a giant "crashed" space ship, a mural of otherworldly creatures). Just up the road, another gift shop called the Alien Research Center is where you'll find shot glasses, t-shirts and stickers adorned with little green men.

Stretch your legs and grab lunch or a snack in the town of Caliente. I had a quesadilla at Knotty Pine , where you can enjoy the vintage vibes and play slot machines in the bar. You should also get gas in town, so take the opportunity to fuel up even if your tank isn't empty.

Worship at nature's cathedral 

Just past Caliente on Rte 93, you'll reach Cathedral Gorge State Park . This dramatic canyon, formed by eroded rock and clay, looks like a giant melting layer cake. It has some easy trails near the park entrance that can be completed in less than hour. Note that the park requires advance reservations for entry at peak times.

Hit the hay

By the time you reach the town of Ely, you will have earned a rest. I stayed at the Motel 6 (spotless, with especially welcoming staff) and the historic Hotel Nevada (Old West vibes, lots of taxidermy in the lobby).   

Day 2: Great Basin National Park

Get to know the park.

Drive about an hour west of Ely to reach Great Basin National Park, which is known for snow-capped peaks and an intricate cave system. There are also groves of rare, twisty limbed bristlecone pines, some of which are thought to be more than 5000 years old.

Go spelunking

Start your morning by descending into Lehman Caves , the park's central attraction and a must-see on any visit. The caves are classified as their own national monument and have their own parking lot and visitors center within the wider national park. Book a tour with a park ranger (30, 60 or 90 minutes, prices vary) to see enormous stalagmites and stalactites, underground lakes and the few living organisms that call the cave home.

Take a hike (or two)

After you see the caves, hop back in your car and drive the winding uphill road –   an experience unto itself –   toward Wheeler Peak. I parked in the lot well before the summit and set out from there on foot. There are trailheads here that lead to a few different, equally awe-inspiring sights,   including the bristlecone pine groves and Nevada's last glacier. I chose the Alpine Lakes Loop , a relatively flat trail that leads to the sparkling lakes Teresa and Stella. On the way, I crunched my way through light snow cover, snapped too many photos of soaring Wheeler Peak and enjoyed the crisp air. A good option is to try one trail earlier in the day, drive back to Lehman Caves for a quick lunch in the visitors center, and then pick another one to do in the afternoon. A word of caution, however: Some of these trails are labeled "easy," but the park's elevation adds a level of difficulty. Bring enough water, wear layers and pace yourself. 

Day 3: In and around Ely

Soak up some nevada nostalgia .

Copper mining and a prime location along Nevada's Pony Express route —  these are the things that built the town of Ely. The town is a good base for exploring Great Basin National Park, but it also allows easy access to a few other whimsical, slightly strange sights that make a fun add-on to a national park trip.

Make it malted

Pull up a vintage red-and-chrome seat at the soda fountain at Economy Drug , which opened for business in 1946. Excellent sandwiches and vintage-style sodas are menu standouts, but you can also order malts, milkshakes and ice cream. And of course, if you run out of toothpaste or sunblock, you can get it here, too. True to its name, Economy Drug remains a working pharmacy.

Ride the rails

It's hard to find a more charming spot in Ely than its impeccably preserved train station, which is part of the Nevada Northern Railway . Not only does this organization maintain the station and all of its adjacent buildings, it also preserves and runs a collection of vintage locomotives and train cars. Book a trip on one of them to go stargazing in the desert, view a fireworks display, learn about geology or sip champagne. Programming rotates and is oriented to the season. You can also tour the station itself. 

Search for treasure

Garnet Hill is a designated "rockhounding" area, or a place that's open to the public for geological treasure hunting. Drive up the steep dirt road as far as you can go, park, and then walk up the hill about 20 minutes to reach the best hunting spots. The hill is named for the dark red gems that are common in the area, but you're more likely to find other kinds of wonders close to the surface — namely, bits of petrified wood and fossils. I found a fragment of a trilobite —  a prehistoric marine animal that would have lived on this spot more than 250 million years ago —  and burst into tears at the wonder of it.

See what's left of a mining boom

Just off of Rte 50, about 30 minutes from Ely, you'll find one of the oddest, and most oddly enchanting, sites in the area. The Ward Charcoal Ovens , each one standing more than 30ft tall in a vast tract of open desert, were where charcoal was made for the smelting of silver in the 1800s. The nearby mining town would be wrecked by flood and fire by the close of the 19th century, but the stone ovens remain. You can even dart inside them to get a closer look at their open, beehive like design. 

Day 4: Las Vegas

Get back to sin city.

If you drove up to Ely via Rte 93, you can take an alternate road, Rte 318, back to Vegas. It affords different views of the mountains and saves about 30 minutes of driving. On my last night in Nevada, I opted for a few simple Las Vegas pleasures —  a terrifying museum and a perfect martini. I started at the Atomic Museum , which unflinchingly charts the history of atomic energy and weaponry. For more than 40 years starting in the 1950s, the area north of Las Vegas was America's official nuclear testing site. (In the 1950s, postcards showed an illustration of a Vegas showgirl wearing a mushroom cloud as a costume.)

Exhibits go deep on technology and history, but also examine the ethics of nuclear war, and even of the testing site itself. That evening, I headed to Delilah for a drink — and I definitely needed one. This supper club-slash-nightclub has live big-band-style music, simple food that hits the spot (the chicken fingers are a favorite) and impeccable cocktails, all in an atmosphere that feels like a throwback to gilded Rat Pack-era Las Vegas. This is the one spot on your trip where you'll be asked to put away your cell phone and just enjoy —  and it's so good that you won't mind.

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, black twitter: a people's history.

Black people are the architects of American culture. The hip verbiage many young people speak, the music they consume, and even the most influential art among what could be called hipsters are derived from Black people. Our distinctive perception of the world has become a pavement for creativity, and social media is no exception. During the exodus of Twitter—or X if you're lame or a bot—the influential grip they had became so significant that it's warranted a 3-part Hulu docu-series on the subject. For an influential sub-culture, Prentice Penny's "Black Twitter: A People's History" is a trip down memory lane, highlighting the pivotal moments in Black culture, politically and artistically, and how our diverse voices made the app better and voices heard, but it stumbles by excluding so many people who made this corner of the internet so influential.

Based on Jason Parham's 2021 Wired piece "A People's History of Black Twitter," the three-part doc chronicles different avenues in which Black people were the creators that gave Twitter its wings. In the early 2010s, Black people preferred the site over its main competitor, Facebook. Once a few hashtags such as '#twitterafterdark' and '#youknowyoureblackwhen' started flying, it became a communal beacon for Black users, inviting them to show up and add their voices to the conversation. This was the birth of what we now know as 'Black Twitter, a unique community within the larger Twitter platform where Black users share their experiences, perspectives, and humor, specific hashtags connecting and amplifying their voices. It's a space where everyone's voice matters, and it's had a significant impact on shaping cultural and political discourse on social media.

The three episodes revolve around Black Twitter's digital origin, the social changes it influenced by its impact, and the circling down the drain during the Trump era through the pandemic and up to Elon Musk's current reign. Of its three near-hour chapters, the first plays like a joyous celebration as an ensemble of journalists, hashtag originators, comedians, and scholars discuss many joke exchanges originating from the latest dramatic moments in “ Scandal ” or “Game of Thrones.” Panelists recount iconic incidents that went viral via the bird app from the Rihanna/Ciara beef of 2011 that had everyone gagged to the infamous Zola Twitter thread , the first instance a Twitter tale became a full-fledged movie (" Zola "), showcasing Black Twitter's cultural impact.

As it progresses, the series doubles down on the discussion of the advancement of technology and how the platform became a tool for Black voices to be heard nationwide, such as April Reign's #oscarsowhite campaign in 2014, which commented on the constant omission of Black people in Oscar acting categories, lending to the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences diversifying their membership pool. Or with Alicia Garza's #BlackLivesMatter campaign that started in response to the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin.

With "Black Twitter: A People's History," Penny assembles numerous journalists, scholars, comedians, and internet personalities, including W. Kamau Bell , Amanda Seales, Jemele Hill, Roxane Gay, Sam Jay , Brad Jenkins, Alicia Garza , and April Reign. Given the celebration of inclusivity, its aura is disappointingly exclusive as most of the subjects' opinions are high-profile people with blue checks. Each panelist's profile appears to bear that verification symbol at the end of their name; while today it carries little weight, it'd be preferable to consult other influential users with less problematic backgrounds than, say, the always controversial Amanda Seales . 

It’s uncomfortable that people like Seales and Kristy Tillman get the spotlight to cover misogynoir when they were publicly slammed for defending terrible men  as recently as last weekend , when Tillman defended journalist DJ Vlad, who called for a Black Princeton professor’s job. Why are these the people who get to have these discussions and not people outside of the casting director’s bizarre definition of Black Twitter royalty? 

If the viewer is a young Black kid who didn’t know of Twitter until its current X-era, the doc functions as a surface-level crash course. But the movement deserves more than a superficial appreciation. For anyone who was there, it feels ultimately thankless due to our shared experiences down paths we don't necessarily want to reminisce on. And it breezes through topics ripe for deeper conversation.

San Antonio to Salado: 5 cool history day trips that won't take you too far from Austin

When you fantasize about summertime day trips in Central Texas, dreams likely transport you to pools, lakes and swimming holes. Places to cool off.

There's another kind of day trip that can tickle the mind while soothing the body, if you know how do it right.

Of the dozens of day trip destinations within fairly easy reach of Austin, we picked these five historic spots to get your motors started.

Monument Hill in La Grange

(Round-trip drive time: 2 hours)

Perhaps you've noticed this high point while driving past La Grange on Texas 71. To the south rises a hill above the Colorado River that stands out like no other. Head there.

A Texas State Historic Site, elegiac Monument Hill is shaded by trees that are, at times, monuments in themselves.

The first order of business, then, might be a refreshing repast taken at one of the many discreetly spaced picnic tables. For my last visit, I picked up an enormous "Back Porch Sandwich" from  Back Porch BBQ , located at the crossroads of Texas 71 and U.S. 77.

One can find plenty of history and nature in this park. Recognized as a meditative spot early on, it was selected in 1848 as a cemetery for the Texans who died in the Dawson Massacre (1842), along with the dead of the Texan Santa Fe (1841) and Mier (1842) expeditions, and those captured during Gen. Adrián Woll's raid on San Antonio (1842).

You see, the 1840s was an unsettled decade for the new republic, as Mexico and Texas asserted their territorial claims without engaging in decisive battles. A soaring art-deco slab, decorated with some low-relief figures, was added to the renovated tomb for the dead of these conflicts in 1936 during the Texas Centennial.

To find out how the disputes were settled during the Mexican American War in the late 1840s, visit the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum for its current exhibit on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo .

The hill hides some other historical treasures: A few dozen yards away, one finds the solidly built Kreische House, furnished and decorated with pieces that reflect how its residents lived during the mid-19th century.

In a low spot below the house sits the extensive remains of the Kreische Brewery, which can be seen from an elevated viewing point or fairly close-up, although with restrictions. (414 Texas 92 Spur, La Grange, thc.texas.gov/historic-sites/monument-hill )

Courthouse Square in Mason

(Round-trip drive time: 4 hours)

Mason is one of those Hill Country towns that has — so far — not been spoiled by overly curious tourists. The round-trip drive time — to and from this county seat — is longer than the other excursions recommended here, but the route through the rugged countryside is a treat in itself.

The chief magnet these days is the Mason County Courthouse , completely rebuilt in 2023 after an arsonist set the structure afire in 2021. For me, one of the reporting thrills of the past few years was to watch as a new dome was hoisted atop the courthouse, while practically the whole town cheered on all four sides of the long square, many of them protected from the elements by the generous shade structures positioned in front of older buildings.

This is not the only courthouse Mason County lost in a fire. The first, which stood on the northeast side of the courthouse grounds, also burned down.

"The first one burned on Jan. 21, 1877, during the Hoodoo War," said local historian Fran Hoerster in 2023. The extended conflict, sometimes called the Mason County War, was really a series of feuds and lynchings related to cattle rustling that sometimes pitted German Americans against Anglo Americans. "People rushed in to grab the land records. Got most of them. But we lost brand records, marriage records, probate records. We had to start all over again," Hoerster said.

"There was a second courthouse somewhere over there (pointing toward the western side of the courthouse grounds), but we don't know exactly where, from 1879 to 1909. It was torn down. This one was finished in 1910."

Mason supports two historical museums, one on the square, which displays one of the county's famous topazes. Another is a magnificent old rock schoolhouse; a pre-Civil War fort; a fine modern library with a permanent exhibit on  "Old Yeller" author Fred Gipson , a local; and a good deal of art.

There's plenty to eat and drink around the courthouse square. If you get a chance, visit the ornate Seaquist House; check for tour times and dates in advance.

Main Street in Bastrop

(Round-trip drive time: 1 hour)

Bastrop is not just an Austin suburb. That's a relatively recent role for this town that is older than Austin and fell a just few votes short of becoming the capital of Texas.

Not long ago, I explored the historic districts alongside Ken Kesselus, a Bastrop native, former mayor, retired Episcopalian pastor and community historian. Among the places we visited were Bastrop County African American Cultural Center, Bastrop Casino (an old German gathering place) and Calvary Episcopal Church.

The Museum and Visitors Center of the Bastrop County Historical Society (904 Main St.) is a good place to start. I wrote this about the excellent small museum: "Each display is clear, properly lighted and historically accurate, as far as I could surmise. Among others, two excellent exhibits cover the local coal industry, which I knew almost nothing about, and the cotton boom, which includes a map of the county's freedom colonies, with background about slavery and emancipation."

Kesselus and I shared a meal on the town's historic Main Street, which comes alive, especially on weekends in fair weather, and many buildings offer awnings or other shade devices. Several  newcomers have opened shops and restaurants  along this main stem. We lunched al fresco at Paw-Paw's Catfish House, which serves a fried, breaded catfish that is light as air and tender as a mother's love.

Stagecoach Inn in Salado

If you grew up in Texas, you remember this old landmark, now situated along Interstate 35 north of Austin, as an inn and eatery suspended in amber. For decades, nothing changed. Recently, it has undergone a series of improvements that make it 1) a luxury resort of sorts, 2) a gateway to the revived Salado arts and crafts district, 3) an even more authentic expression, to me, of its ancient origins.

I wrote this recently about the place: "Part of the existing complex above Salado Creek goes back to the 1860s, when it was a true stagecoach stop known as the Shady Villa Hotel. Its restaurant was founded in the 1940s and was known for its unchanging menu and staff. A nearby modernist motel rose next to the interregional highway during the 1950s; it, too, seemed trapped in amber. The next layer was laid down during the past decade: a  winningly reinvented restaurant  and a luxury hotel complex that tempts one to stay the night."

Note that the restaurant, which is surrounded by cooling greenery, has gone through a series of temporary name changes, but it will always be the Stagecoach Inn.

Pearl District in San Antonio

(Round-trip drive time: 3 hours)

I know, I know, Interstate 35. How do you get around that monster of a freeway that becomes a psychological barrier to visiting the other half of our quickly merging "mega-metro"? If you leave early on a weekend morning, at least the trip to SA is less stressful.

Once there, many of the historical attractions are readily at hand. One cluster of attractions downtown includes the Alamo campus, including the new Ralston Family Collections Center, the main plaza, with the San Fernando Cathedral and the Governor's Palace, along with, of course, the magical Riverwalk and its several historical destinations.

Another San Antonio historical jaunt requires a car in the summer, unless you were recently trained by the French Foreign Legion (see the 1999 movie "Beau Travail"): The Mission Trail south of downtown, which includes the other four 18th-century Spanish church complexes, each with its own discrete history. If you don't do it this time, do it later.

To fully combine history and refreshment, perhaps head north of downtown to the Pearl District .

The centerpiece of the Pearl District these days is the luxury Hotel Emma embedded in the1894 building that once housed the San Antonio Brewers Association, which produced Pearl Beer. Opened in 2015, the hotel includes an elaborate lobby bar filled with elements of the structure's former industrial role, as well as carefully selected local eateries on the ground level. (Try any of them!)

Bundled around the plaza are an indoor food market, a thriving bookstore, new condos, a music venue situated in a round building that once served as a stable, a riverside amphitheater, and several more restaurants, one of them associated with the San Antonio base of the Culinary Institute of America.

Still sweating? Duck into one of these oases for a long siesta, or stroll down the extended Riverwalk to the old Lone Star brewery that became, in 1981, the stunning — and air-conditioned — San Antonio Museum of Art.

Back to Omaha. Florida baseball beats Clemson in 13-inning marathon to earn 14th CWS trip in school history

Florida baseball was in danger of missing the 2024 NCAA Tournament field less than a month ago.

Now, the Florida Gators are heading to the College World Series.

Florida (34-28) clinched its second straight trip to the College World Series and 14th in school history, outlasting Clemson in an 11-10, 13-inning marathon to sweep the NCAA Clemson Regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C,

After Clemson took a 10-9 lead on a solo home run in the top of the 13th by Alden Mathes, Florida loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning. Then, UF center fielder Michael Robertson delivered the walk-off hit, a two-RBI double off Clemson reliever Ethan Darben to win a game that lasted 5 hours and 5 minutes.

"I was just looking for something up in the zone, a good pitch to hit," Robertson said. "It was there, I was able to put a good swing on it. I thought I got enough barrel for it to find a gap, and it did, but obviously none of that happens without the guys in front of me."

Florida won its fifth straight, matching a season-long win streak that last occurred Feb. 20-25 against North Florida and Columbia. After going 13-17 in SEC play, the Gators are peaking at the right time.

"We had put ourselves in position to get over the .500 mark to get into the tournament," Florida baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. "And honestly the last month of the year we've been pretty much playing playoff baseball. Every game mattered. Every Tuesday game, mid-week, and then we had to finish it off at Georgia, win two out of three there ...

"But I think us going through those struggles and have every game matter, the last two or three weeks of the year, probably helped toughen us up a little bit."

Florida was two outs away from a CWS berth in the top of the ninth, with closer Brandon Neely on the mound. But after giving up back-to-back singles, Neely surrendered a three-run homer to Clemson center fielder Cam Cannarella, tying the score at 9.

Neely regrouped to keep the score tied in the ninth and pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th inning in a 72-pitch, 4-inning outing. Florida had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 10th, but with two runners on, Cannarella made a Willie-Mays style catch to rob Florida right fielder Ashton Wilson of a game-winning, walk-off double.

Freshman righty Luke McNiellie (4-6) earned the win for the Gators, allowing one run over two innings pitched with three strikeouts.

Jac Caglianone powers Florida baseball to early lead

Jac Caglianone got Florida off to an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and allowed 4 runs over 5 2/3 innings as UF's starting pitcher. Shortstop Colby Shelton also went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, including a tiebreaking two-RBI single that gave the Gators a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Clemson cuts Florida's lead to 5-4 on a solo home run by catcher Jimmy Obertop in the top of the sixth, but Florida answered with a big blast of its own. After Dale Thomas led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, catcher Brody Donay hit a towering two run homer to right center field, putting Florida back up 7-4.

After Clemson cut Florida's lead to 7-6 in the top of the eighth, Florida answered again with another timely home run. Clemson chose to intentionally walk Caglianone with two outs and no one on, and Ashton Wilson followed with a two-run homer, giving Florida a 9-6 lead.

The high-stakes game included some tense moments early. In the top of the second, Caglianone tagged out designated hitter Nolan Nawrocki on a slow roller up the first base line. Nawrocki delivered an elbow into Caglianone's body on the play, and Caglianone responded with a shove, causing both dugouts to empty.

After a lengthy 18-minute review, umpires ejected Clemson first baseman Jack Crighton for crossing the diamond to get involved in the scrum. Crighton had doubled in the second inning before Nawrocki's ground out.

Caglianone stayed in the game and surrendered three runs in the top of the third, as Clemson went up 3-2 on a two-run homer by third baseman Blake Wright. But Shelton answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, tying the score at 3.

Clemson coach Erik Bakich was ejected in the top of the 13th inning, after umps conferred whether the eject Mathes from the game for his bat flip following his home run swing. Mathes, though, remained in the game.

"Obviously, you get to this time of the year, there's a lot at stake for both teams," O'Sullivan said. "But we were able to persevere through it."
