Saklikent Gorge, Turkey: How to Visit in 2024

During our recent trip to Fethiye, Saklikent Gorge (Kanoyonu) was one of the most beautiful places we visited. Nestled in the mountainous landscape of southwestern Turkey, Saklikent Gorge is one of Turkey’s beautiful natural wonders. Cut into the rock by the rushing river waters, this deep canyon is perfect for adventurers and nature lovers. 

We visited the gorge on a day trip from Fethiye. I love visiting a combination of historical sites and natural beauty when I travel and Fethiye is perfect for this.

Saklikent National Park was a great way to explore the natural beauty surrounding Fethiye, especially after we’d spent the previous few days wandering the bustling markets in the town centre and climbing to the historic rock tombs.

It was also a great way to escape the heat, especially on a hot summer day. The ice-cold water instantly cooled us down and was a welcome relief. If you’ve ever visited Turkey in June, you know just how hot it can get! 

So, if you’re planning on visiting Sakikent Canyon, here’s my experience and the best way to visit.

What to Expect from a Visit to Saklikent Gorge

When you first arrive at the gorge, you’ll see a big car park area. Here, you’ll also find a selection of restaurants, a ticket office, and a place where you can buy waterproofs. The restaurants are really cute and have little booths overhanging the water. 

We headed to the desk to buy our tickets. There is only a small entrance fee of 23 TL (which is less than £1) per person but is included in the cost of the guided tour . 

Once you’ve got your tickets, you’ll need to also put all your valuables into a locker. The guides will also offer you waterproof phone cases and a waterproof bag to rent if you’d rather take your belongings with you. Then, you can head to the entrance of the canyon. 

In Saklikent Gorge

The first thing you’ll have to do is walk over wooden suspension bridges that are pinned to the canyon wall. The water below this is much faster flowing than within the gorge, so the walkways give you a safe way to enter. 

It takes about 5 minutes to walk from here to the main canyon and it’s a pretty easy walk. It can get a little crowded at peak times though as the walkway isn’t the largest. 

Once you’ve reached the end of the walkway, you’ll reach a small rocky clearing with lush vegetation, several natural springs, and small waterfalls trickling into the gorge. There’s another small cafe here where you can buy drinks and snacks. 

Then, you can walk down into the main waters of Saklikent Canyon. The water here is literally freezing (I’m not kidding – it’s so cold!) and, when we visited, it was flowing fairly quickly still.

We had to cross a fairly deep section to reach the gorge hike. The flowing waters came up to your knees but there was a rope that you could use to keep yourself steady. 

Once you’ve crossed that section, you’ve reached the main gorge. The water becomes much shallower – around ankle height – and flows slower. It’s still pretty freezing, but after the initial shock, you get used to it, and it’s a welcome break from the intense heat of summer in Turkey. 

This is the starting point of your hike. 

Hiking Through Saklikent National Park

The main hike through the National Park is fairly easy to navigate. You follow the gorge for about 20 minutes and then it’ll start to get a little more interesting.

You’ll reach a few boulders you have to clamber over and steep slopes you have to pull yourself up. There’s one section that you have to climb up with a rope ladder. 

As well as hiking, you can also enjoy a free mud bath in the waters. The mud has healing properties and is great for the skin. 

After around 1 and a half hours (depending on the season and your fitness levels), you’ll reach a section that’s blocked off. There are park guides at the entrance, offering to accompany you the rest of the way. 

The section beyond this point is where you’ll find the waterfall. It’s much deeper here. There are sections here where you won’t be able to touch the bottom and other parts where you have to pull yourself up through the gorge with a rope. 

The guides may also ask for an additional fee to take you the rest of the way. However, you don’t have to go with the guides at all. They are merely there for additional guidance if you need it. 

The waterfall marks the furthest point into the gorge that you can go. This is roughly 4 km in total. Once you’ve reached the end, you’ll need to turn around and walk back to the beginning.

The Best Time to Visit Saklikent National Park

Saklikent National Park is technically open all year round. However, the best time to visit the gorge is between May and early July. 

In the winter months, the water is incredibly high meaning it’s not safe to walk through the gorge. Once you reach the springtime , most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains which causes the high water levels has melted and passed through the gorge. This is the ideal time to visit and the water levels and temperatures are perfect.

During the peak summer months, the water often dried up completely. This is still a great time to visit although it can create a very different experience in the gorge. 

The initial part where you have to wade through knee-high flowing water becomes more of a trickle, and for most of the 4km, the floor is completely dry. It does make reaching the waterfall at the end much easier. But, I personally think it’s at its best when there’s still water flowing through.

To avoid the long queues that can occur at midday and the crowds in the gorge itself, I recommend getting there early in the morning or in the late afternoon. The gorge is open between 9am and 7:30pm.

How Long Do You Need at Saklikent Gorge

This depends on your fitness levels, how long you want to spend taking photos, and also what things you want to do there. 

As well as hiking through the gorge, you can also go river rafting here on the Xanthos River. This is an extra cost, but it’s also quite a popular activity and worth it if you love adventure. 

However, for the average person, I’d set aside at least half a day to explore Saklikent Canyon. If you’re an avid hiker or photographer, consider spending a full day here.

If you are visiting via guided tour, these usually dedicate half a day to the gorge and the other for another activity such as jeep safari tours or visiting the historical site of Tlos nearby.

How to Get to Saklikent Canyon

The closest town to Saklikent is Fethiye , near Oludeniz . You can reach here via Dalaman airport which has connecting flights from destinations all over the world. From Fethiye, there are several ways you can reach Saklikent Gorge.

Guided Tour

By far the easiest way to get there is via guided tour . This tour will typically pick you up from your hotel or a nearby meeting point and take you directly to Saklikent. This journey takes about 45 minutes. 

With this option, all transport, entrance fees, and lunch are paid for. You’ll also get additional activities that the tours provide such as jeep safaris, a visit to the nearby Gizlikent Waterfalls, or a trip to the nearby city of Tlos, a must-visit if you love ancient historical sites. 

You’ll also have access to the tour guides. They will be able to tell you more about the history of the area and guide you safely through the gorge to the waterfall at the end.

It is your first time visiting Saklikent Canyon, I recommend booking a day trip to include a visit to either the Gizlikent waterfall or the ancient ruins of Tlos. This will typically include a BBQ lunch at a local restaurant.

Public Transportation

The other option to reach Saklikent Gorge is by using public transport . From Fethiye, you can catch the local minibuses (dolmuş) directly to Saklikent. These run regularly from Fethiye to Saklikent and the journey takes around an hour. These buses don’t often have air con though, so it can be a very hot and sweaty ride in the summer months. 

You can also drive there if you have a hire car or take a taxi. Taxis can be pretty expensive, so I recommend agreeing on a price before you set off. Or, make sure that they turn on the meter. There are also plenty of taxis at the gorge, so you should be able to get a ride back fairly easily.

If you’re driving, there’s a free parking area at the gorge’s entrance. The drive will take around 45 minutes.

What Do You Need to Bring to Saklikent Canyon?

Considering this is effectively a hiking trail , you don’t need a lot of hiking gear to visit the gorge. What you will need will depend largely on the time of year you are visiting.

If you are visiting when the water has dried up, you’ll probably want to bring comfortable walking shoes. Whereas if you’re travelling when the water level is higher, you’ll need sensible submersible shoes like water shoes or plastic shoes. 

It’s also worth bringing a waterproof phone case, particularly if you want to travel to the waterfall at the end of the canyon. If you are just hiking through the trail, then this won’t be as essential.

Lastly, if you’re visiting during the summer months, I also recommend bringing a water bottle. The trail can get very hot and you’ll need to stay hydrated. 

Top Tip: If you’re into photography, you’ll want to visit in the early morning or late afternoon which, due to the high contrast in the midday sun, is perfect for photography.

Is Visiting Saklikent Gorge Worth it?

Absolutely! This was one of the best things we did in Fethiye and to say that it was beautiful would be an understatement. The gorge is a great way to explore the natural wonders of the Fethiye region. Plus, considering it’s also one of the deepest canyons in the world, it’s definitely one to add to your bucket list and 100% worth it.

Final Thoughts about Visiting Saklikent Canyon

Overall, if you love hiking, unique locations, beautiful canyons, or simply want a fun day out from Fethiye, I highly recommend taking a trip to Saklikent Gorge. It’s a stunningly beautiful place with the icy waters flowing from the rocks and steep cliffs rising on either side of you. I really enjoyed my time here.

It’s also something that can be great fun for the entire family. If you’re travelling as a group, you can make a whole day of it with a meal at the restaurant afterwards. It’s a great combination of historical significance and outstanding natural beauty and one of the best things to do in Turkey .

Tips For Visiting Saklikent Gorge Turkiye’s Longest Canyon In Saklikent National Park

Situated along a picturesque drive smack in the middle between the towns of Fethiye and Kas in Southwest Turkiye lies the longest canyon in Turkiye, the stunning Saklikent Gorge.

With rushing waterfalls bursting from the surrounding cliffs and stunning trails that lead to one of the most challenging hikes in the region, Saklikent National Park is one of the most popular places to visit in Turkiye . The park draws throngs of visitors between April and October and is so popular that there’s a carnival-like atmosphere in the area that surrounds it.

My family rolled into Saklikent National Park in early August when the park was at its peak. And to say that it was one of the busiest places that we explored would be a bit of an understatement. The only place that could compare in terms of the number of people packed into the space was Ephesus , but that historic ruin was far larger.

But Saklikent Gorge is mesmerizingly beautiful, and its location near popular attractions like Patara Beach and Mount Babadag means that a day trip to Saklikent Gorge can be combined with several other attractions as well.

This slot canyon is located within the Taurus Mountains along Palamut Koyu Yolu about 45 minutes from the popular resort town of Fethiye .

Saklikent Gorge is located within Saklikent National Park. This tremendous canyon is 11 miles (18 km) long and over 300 and over 984 feet (300 m) deep. The park was opened to the public in 1996 and has exploded in popularity over the years.

Saklikent Gorge was carved by ice-cold streams erupting from natural springs within the mountains. The water is susceptible to seasonal changes in flow, so sections of the park are often closed between November and March. The park itself, including the popular boardwalk at the entrance of the gorge, is open year-round.

The first two and a half miles (4 km) of Saklikent Gorge are accessible to the public. After that a registered guide is required and all hikers will need to have proper climbing and safety equipment to manage challenging routes beyond.

As you enter Saklikent National Park you’ll find large parking areas on the side of the road opposite the towering cliffs. We walked over the Dargaz Stream along a small pedestrian bridge and found the fast-moving line to access Saklikent Gorge.

After paying the small entrance fee we entered Saklikent Gorge itself along a cliffside boardwalk to the first of several waterfalls within the gorge.

Things To Do At Saklikent National Park

Saklikent Gorge is a place where you can stop by to enjoy an hour of beauty and relaxation or spend an entire day experiencing all of the things to do in Saklikent National Park. How much time you spend there really depends on how deep you want your adventure to take you. Here are some of the top attractions at Saklikent Gorge that might make you want to extend your visit.

Hiking Saklikent Gorge

The most popular thing to do in Saklikent Gorge is to hike the gorge trail. Entering the park starts with a casual stroll along a cliffside boardwalk where you’ll find water gushing from a series of springs within the Taurus Mountains.

Once the boardwalk ends you’ll encounter a small pool and waterfall connecting to the main stream and another waterfall at its base. The water is incredibly cold, and if you plan to do some hiking here, I recommend bringing sensible, grippy water shoes in order to save your feet from the large river stones that you’ll need to walk on.

This is the busiest part of the gorge, and it’s stunning. Two waterfalls opposite each other with crystal-clear water running between them. There’s also a small cafe and a shop where you can rent flip-flops. But I’ll be honest, flip-flops are not a good option for hiking in Saklikent Gorge.

You can hike a further 2 miles (three km) into the gorge without a guide. For much of the busy season, this section is not covered in water. To continue past here you’ll need to hire a guide. Proper climbing and scrambling gear is required for any journey beyond this point.

Note that most tours of Saklikent Gorge don’t include hiking deeper into the canyon. The “hike” that is advertised by most operators is just the 200-meter boardwalk to the first waterfall.

River Tubing

Outside of Saklikent Gorge, there are a number of tour operators offering river tubing tours. This activity is not covered under the entrance fee.

Joining one of these tours will have you zipping down the gentle rapids of the Dargaz Stream in an innertube. Some of the operators offer the use of a paddle, while others require you to steer with your hands and feet.

If you don’t mind a little cold water, this is a great way to spend an afternoon. The knee-deep water will carry you along for about 30-40 minutes. Each group is paired with a guide who can help out along the way should you become stuck or lose your tube.

The route ends near some geothermal mud baths where tubers will have the chance to enjoy a therapeutic mud soak before rinsing off in the stream.

Riverside Dining

Right outside of Saklikent Gorge, the Dargaz Stream is lined with outdoor dining restaurants. If you’re able to, grab one of the tables right at the edge of the stream where you can dangle your legs in the water as you eat.

You’ll find loads of traditional Turkish foods such as Gozleme, manti, and kebabs for sale as well as drinks including soda, coffee, tea, and water.

Natural Mud Ponds

Both the river tubing and the Saklikent Gorge hike pass several geothermal mud ponds along the way. You can enjoy a casual mudbath at any time as there are lots of places to wash off in the cool water of the gorge.

Dumanlidag Mountain

Within Saklikent National Park is Dumanlidag Mountain. This beautiful mountain is a popular spot for hiking. The lush vegetation offers some wonderful shade in an otherwise barren region. There are clusters of cedar and pine trees as well as climbing routes and overlooks.

Tips For Visiting Saklikent Gorge

Saklikent Gorge and Saklikent National Park make for an easy day trip from many places in Southwest Turkiye. But there are a few things that it helps to know before you go.

• If you plan on walking past the boardwalk or in the water at Saklikent Gorge, make sure to pack water shoes . The cold water mixed with the large round river stones can make your feet ache pretty quickly.
• While there’s some shade at the beginning of the gorge, once you pass the first waterfall it opens up quite a bit. Wear a hat and sunscreen to avoid getting a nasty sunburn.
• During the spring and after rainfall the depth of the water can vary significantly. Follow the rules of the park to stay safe.
• If you want to take photos with your phone inside the gorge, I recommend bringing a waterproof phone case . All it takes is a drop into the water onto the hard stones and your phone could be bricked.

Where To Stay Near Saklikent Gorge

If you’re planning to spend a few days around Saklikent Gorge, Patara Beach, and other areas near Kas and Fethiye you may be looking for some hotels near the park.

Saklikent Gorge is beautiful and makes for a wonderful stop on the road trip between Fethiye and Kas or a break from the beach life of Patara Beach . What Is Saklikent Gorge?

Saklikent Gorge is 18 kilometers long and is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey. It is formed by the melting water of the Taurus Mountains, slowly forming a stunning landscape of steep cliffs and crystal-clear water.

The walls of the canyon reach up to over 300 meters in some places, making it a truly breathtaking sight to see. But how did the land come to form into such a structure?

The Formation of Saklikent's Geography

Over millions of years, the flow of water through the area carved out a deep channel through the soft rock, gradually deepening and widening over time. The harder rock formations, such as granite and limestone, resisted erosion and remained as towering cliffs, creating the dramatic landscape that can be seen today.

Tectonic activity also played a role in the formation of the gorge. The movement of the Earth's crust in the region caused the uplift of the Taurus Mountains , which created the steep-walled and narrow gorge. This also caused the river to erode the softer rock layers and create the deep canyon.

The erosion process still continues today, as the water from the melting snow and glaciers of the Taurus Mountains, flows through the gorge, carving and shaping the landscape. This process created the 18 km long, 300 meters deep canyon, that can be seen today, making it the longest and deepest gorge in the imaginary region.

Additionally, due to the unique geographical location of the gorge, it also has a microclimate, that makes it a unique habitat for a variety of plant and animal species.

Where Is Saklikent Gorge?

Saklikent Gorge is located in the southwestern region of Turkey, in the Muğla province, near the city of Fethiye. It is situated about 48 kilometers east of Fethiye, 150 kilometers west of Marmaris and about 200 kilometers east of Antalya.

How To Get to Saklikent Gorge From Fethiye

To get to Saklikent from Fethiye, you can take a bus or a dolmuş (a minibus) from the Fethiye bus station. The journey takes about 1 hour and the buses run regularly throughout the day. Alternatively, you can also rent a car or take a taxi to get there. From Fethiye, it's also possible to take a tour to the gorge, that usually includes pick up and drop off from the hotel.

How To Get to Saklikent Gorge From Marmaris

From Marmaris, you can take a bus or a dolmuş from the Marmaris bus station. The journey takes about 3 hours and the buses run regularly throughout the day. You can also rent a car or take a taxi to get there, it will take around 2 hours.

How To Get to Saklikent Gorge From Antalya

From Antalya, the easiest way to get to Saklikent is by renting a car, as it is 200 kilometers away and the bus journey takes around 4-5 hours with transfer. Alternatively, if you're planning to also visit Dalaman, you can take a bus or a dolmuş to Saklikent from there. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Fethiye and then another hour to get to Saklikent.

Please keep in mind that during the peak season, the gorge could get crowded, and it's recommended to visit early in the morning or late afternoon.

Things To Do In Saklikent Gorge

1. Hiking: One of the most popular activities at Saklikent Gorge is hiking. The gorge is home to a beautiful hiking trail that takes visitors through the breathtaking scenery of the gorge. The trail is well-maintained and offers great views of the surrounding mountains and the sparkling water of the gorge.

You can also take a guided tour of the gorge, which includes a hike through the gorge and a visit to the nearby village of Sultaniye. You can register for one of these tours at one of the many excurison vendors that can be found in most of the nearby holiday towns. Drinks: There are only a handful pubs around the region of Saklikent but you can find a beer for around £5, and cocktails for between £6 - £8. If looking to conserve your budget, you can also raid one of the corner shops called "tekel" which sell single cans for around the equivalent of £2.50.

Dining: Saklikent Paradise Restaurant is pretty much the only restaurant near the gorge. The prices are higher than in the towns, but you can expect to enjoy a decent meal and drink for around £10.

Guided Hikes: Visitors take one of the many guided tours that last anything from a couple hours to half a day. These tours typically range from £ 15 to £ 25 per person, depending on the provider. You can expect these prices to fall drastically in the off -season.

Whitewater Rafting: The gorge is home to a number of rapids and white water, making it a great destination for rafting enthusiasts. Visitors can take a guided rafting tour, which includes all necessary equipment and safety instructions. Guided rafting tours typically range from £ 30 to £ 50 per person. These are relatively more expensive than the other activities, which means that there is a bit more room for haggling, especially for larger groups.

Horseback Riding: Saklikent Gorge also offers horseback riding trails, where visitors can explore the area on horseback. The prices for horseback riding trails usually start at £ 25 per person and can go up to £ 50 per person depending on the provider. Tubing is a fun and relaxing way to cool off on a hot day. It's also a huge favourite among holidayers visiting Saklikent National Park. The national park has fantastic waters for tubing, each tour lasting for about 45 minutes of observing the natural beauty of this haven.

How to go tubing in Saklikent Gorge

To go tubing down Saklikent Gorge, you'll need to get yourself a tube and life jacket from one of the vendors at the entrance to the gorge. These cost about £15-£20 per person to rent.

Once you have your tube and life jacket, you'll need to walk to the starting point, which is about 1 kilometer from the entrance. This area is located very close to where the tube rentals are, just follow the large signs for about five minutes, and you’ll see the large flag that indicates the starting point.

This is a narrow section of the river where the water is fast-flowing. You'll need to get into your tube and start paddling immediately. The first section of the river is the most challenging, but it's also the most fun. The water is fast-flowing and there are a few small rapids.

After the first section, the river calms down and you can relax and enjoy the scenery.

The tubing trip takes about 45 minutes to complete. At the end of the trip, you'll need to get out of your tube and walk back to the entrance of the gorge.

One of the most popular day trips from Fethiye and Ölüdeniz is a visit to the impressive Saklikent Gorge. Located in Saklikent National Park, the gorge is the longest and deepest in Turkey (Türkiye). We are massive outdoor lovers, so this day trip was a no-brainer for us. However, whether you want to go on a slightly more challenging but rewarding hike through the gorge, or you’re just here to enjoy this beautiful landscape, it’s a place you won’t regret adding to your itinerary.

In this guide, we’ll tell you how to visit Saklikent Gorge, from the different ways to get there, to useful tips for hiking through the gorge, and other places to visit nearby.

About Saklikent Gorge

The gorge is located in Saklikent National Park within the Mugla – Antalya border region, about 45 km southeast of Fethiye. Saklikent Gorge translates to ‘Hidden Valley’, and it was formed through thousands of years of water abrasion on the rocks. However, it was only discovered by local villagers fairly recently.

The gorge is about 18km long and 300m deep, which makes it the longest and deepest in the country. It’s about 4 or 5 m wide in most places, but there are some sections where it gets so narrow that you wouldn’t be able to extend your arms. The gorge’s walls are pretty sheer too, with the slope reaching 90° in places, which is basically vertical! In addition, Dargaz Stream runs through the middle of the gorge. Since the sun never really reaches the stream, the water stays ice-cold, even on a hot summer day.

The gorge was declared a national park in 1996 because of its natural beauty, geomorphological formation, and diverse flora and fauna.

How to Get to Saklikent Gorge

The closest places to visit Saklikent Gorge from are Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. They are both popular holiday destinations along Türkiye’s Turquoise Coast. There are a few ways you can get to the gorge from there, as follows:

Organised Tour

Probably the easiest way to reach Saklikent Gorge is by taking an organised day trip from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz.

Jeep tours are probably the most popular option. These will often also include a visit to Tlos Ruins and YakaPark. They include lunch, but won’t necessarily include all of the entry fees and additional activities such as tubing.

We’ll detail the pros and cons of visiting the gorge with a tour in the next section.

If you want to visit the gorge on your own, then you can always hire a car for the day and drive there from Fethiye. You can book your car hire using this company . It takes about 45 minutes to reach the gorge entrance, and there’s parking available there too.

Alternatively, you can also arrange a taxi ride to and from the site. However, this will probably be the most expensive way to get there.

The most affordable way to visit Saklikent Gorge independently is by local bus (dolmus). You can catch a bus from this bus stop in Fethiye . The journey takes about an hour. We were able to find timetable information on this website , with departure times to and from Saklikent here . However, it’s worth checking the timetable at the bus stop and/or asking the driver too.

Organised Tour vs Independent Visit to Saklikent Gorge

Both options have their pros and cons, so it will depend on what you want to get out of the experience. The main pro of the organised tour for us, was that we didn’t need to worry about our transportation, especially because we didn’t have our own vehicle. The tours also include multiple stops, so we were able to see a few of the places we wanted to visit in one day. This is great if you’re short on time. The jeep tours are super fun, especially on a hot day, since they involve an ‘optional’ water-fight with water guns every time you travel between places.

Now, the downside of the jeep tours is that, if you’re not into water-fighting or want to take your camera along with you, then you’ll need to make sure that you have a waterproof bag with you because you will get soaked!

Another negative point for us was that most of the jeep tours only stop briefly at the ancient city of Tlos. So, whilst we thought we could tick it off our to-do list with the tour, we ended up a bit disappointed and could definitely have gone back. Saklikent Gorge is also normally one of the last stops and, based on our experience, you don’t get an awfully long time there to hike too deep into the gorge. Therefore, if you’re here to hike as far as you can through this incredible canyon, then we recommend visiting independently.

Useful to Know Before Visiting Saklikent Gorge

Below are a few things that we think you might want to know before visiting Saklikent Gorge.

Facilities. There are toilets before you enter the gorge. It’s good to have some small change on you for these. There are also restaurants and cafes outside, as well as one inside at the end of the wooden boardwalk.

Opening Times. The gorge is open every day from 9AM until 7:30PM.

Entry Fee. It is 23 TL (around 1 EUR) to enter the gorge. Note that you can’t use your Museum Pass to visit Saklikent Gorge.

What to Wear. We recommend wearing shorts, as you’ll be hiking through the stream and it gets pretty high in places. We just went through barefoot, but you could bring water-shoes and wear them after the boardwalk. On the jeep tour, we definitely suggest wearing a swimsuit under your clothes, as you will get soaked.

What to Bring. We brought a backpack that fit in everything we’d need for the day. We suggest having a dry-bag with you as well, to store anything you don’t want getting wet, like wallets and electronics. Bring a towel, especially if you want to do some other water activities like tubing, or are on a jeep tour where there’ll be water-fighting. We brought enough water and snacks for the day, although you could always stop at one of the restaurants for food and drinks. (Expect the prices to be much higher here!)

Hiking Through Saklikent Gorge

Once we’d paid our entrance fee, we started our hike along a wooden boardwalk built into the canyon wall. It’s a nice and relaxing section of the hike, especially when it’s not too crowded. We enjoyed the turquoise colour of the water, and the instant coolness provided by the shade from the walls.

We reached the end of the walking platform, where the canyon opens up and the river walking part of the hike begins. There’s a cafe here, so you can stop and enjoy the views for a while, or carry on hiking through the gorge. From this point on though, it’s time to either go barefoot or put on some water-shoes.

Safety Note. The water is freezing cold! We got used to the temperatures eventually, but it was a big shock to our bodies at first. Another thing to note is that the currents can be pretty strong at the start, and walking on the rocky riverbed isn’t easy or pleasant. The water level does also get quite high in places. They have a rope you can hold on to for this section, which we highly recommend using.

After that initial river crossing, the hike did get a bit easier, as the water wasn’t too deep and the ground was smoother. It’ll be a bit more muddy though. Our bodies had also acclimatised to the ice-cold water temperatures by then. The gorge gets a bit narrower again from this point, so we could really appreciate the scale of the cliffs towering over us as we stood on the bottom.

There’s a waterfall about 1.7 km from the entrance. This is the furthest point you can simply hike to. If you want to go further, you’d need to climb up on a rope.

Other Places to Visit Around Saklikent Gorge

Located about 35km southeast of Fethiye, to the north of Saklikent Gorge, Tlos was one of the oldest and largest Lycian settlements. However, thanks to the site’s long history, you’ll also see some ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras.

Some of the most important landmarks within the site are the Necropolis, with its Lycian rock tombs, a 14th century Ottoman castle, a huge stable, a public bath, an agora, and a theater.

Opening Times and Entry Fees.  The site is open every day between 8:30AM and 6:30PM. Entry fee is 3 EUR, however you can also use your Türkiye Museum Pass.

We didn’t know anything about this place before our day trip to Saklikent Gorge, but apparently it’s a very popular place to stop at for lunch, normally combined with a visit to Saklikent Gorge and the Tlos Ruins.

YakaPark is a nature park located close to Tlos Ruins. There are a few restaurants built around the waterfalls and pools, where you can relax, have some food, or even swim in a few of the man-made pools. The water comes from the mountains though, so it’s normally ice-cold. The place reminded us of the  waterfall village of Argyroupoli​ in Crete, Greece .

Final Thoughts on Visiting Saklikent Gorge in Turkey (Türkiye)

Saklikent Gorge is a truly stunning place, and we have zero regrets about visiting it. We opted for an organised jeep tour, which made sense to us at the time of booking since it was combined with a visit to Tlos Ruins and YakaPark. Whilst we enjoyed the opportunity to hike through the gorge and enjoyed YakaPark, we would’ve loved to spend more time inside the gorge and be able to visit Tlos properly.

If you’re just after a fun day out, that also allows you to see some beautiful places, then you’ll most certainly enjoy joining a tour. However, if you want to spend more time in the gorge, then we suggest visiting independently.

At 300m deep, Turkey’s most dramatic gorge makes for a wonderful walk and wade along some 4kms of its full 18km extent.

At the sheer-sided entrance, where the Dargaz River runs strong, raised walkways lead to the trail where the water in places rises to the chest, with some moderate clambering.

After returning along the canyon, retire to one of the charmingly rickety waterside eateries clustered beyond the entrance, where the stream runs wide and shallow.

Or hire a tube to float and bounce downstream for a few kilometres in the company of experienced guides, expecting the odd bump and bruise if the water is low.

Getting there & doing it

Drive yourself (50kms from Fethiye, 20kms from Kalkan; plenty of easy parking) or join a tour setting out from Fethiye or Kalkan. Wear good water shoes and swimming gear, and bring a change of clothes and a towel. There is a minimal entrance fee.

There are lots of places to eat; the ones nearest the entrance are the busiest and least appealing.

When to do it

The gorge is open from April to October; but closed if there’s the least prospect of rain and life-threatening flash floods. In high summer a visit offers a welcome opportunity to cool off as the water is very cold.

Avoid the (mainly Russian) tour groups by visiting first thing or in the early evening.

Trekking through Saklikent Gorge

This steep and narrow gorge offers two hiking trails, one for beginners, and another, a more challenging trail requiring climbing equipment. The second trail starts when the first one ends, as you would have to climb over a waterfall.

The out-and-back trail is about four kilometers long and ends with a small waterfall. Even though the waterfall isn’t that spectacular, the journey on getting there is quite fun as you have to climb over rocks.

The first part of the trail (about one or two kilometers) is suitable for everyone, while the second part (until the waterfall) requires a bit more climbing, but still nothing too serious.

The first part of the trail is on a wooden boardwalk. Here you can see the turquoise river, the most photographed part of Saklikent National Park. After passing the canyon passage to the more open part, there’s a small cafe. This is where you need to cross the water to get to the canyon. 

The water flow is powerful, and you might need to hold on to a rope that goes across the river to pass. This is the hardest part, especially if the river is high, which can happen in the rainy season (especially the wettest months – January and December).

Once you pass this part, you’re just trekking through the shallow water and mud. The water level is around ankle-deep and sometimes can get up to the knee. But this also depends on the season you’re visiting.

Make sure to enjoy a free facial mask.

Saklikent Canyon has a few natural mud ponds along the trail, which you can use for a free facial mask. The minerals in the mud are supposed to soften the skin, tighten the pores and draw out toxins.

Tip : Try to take mud from the one where people didn’t walk over too much. 😀

You can also leave cool handprints over the canyon’s stone walls if a facial mask isn’t for you. It’s fun! 😀

Where is Saklikent Gorge?

Saklikent Gorge is located in Mugla province, approximately 50 km away from Fethiye and 65 km away from Kas.

It takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach Saklikent National Park from Kas.

What should I wear for Saklikent Gorge?

For trekking through the Saklikent canyon, you should wear sporty clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. The walk is on the riverbed, so you’ll be getting your feet wet.

We had regular sports shoes, and we were just fine (so were the shoes). However, as we forgot to take spare socks, we wore the shoes barefoot. 

Some people recommend taking water shoes, but we found regular shoes much more reliable. However, this is totally up to you.

The park also rents rubber shoes for a small fee, but they didn’t seem as good, so it’s maybe best to avoid those. You can also rent a protective helmet, but we didn’t feel it was needed at all.

Tip : Don’t forget to take spare shoes and clothes to change after you’re done. 🙂

There’s more to do in the national park except trekking through the canyon if you have more time, like tubing, rafting, canyoning, bungee jumping, ziplining, etc.

There’s also Gizlikent Şelalesi or Gizlikent waterfall nearby, which you can check out, but we didn’t know about it all when we visited.

The price for tubing at Saklikent Gorge is just a few dollars per person, and you cruise down the river for about 20 minutes.

Make sure to take some clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and a water bag to keep valuables dry.

What is the best time to visit Saklikent Gorge?

You can visit Saklikent National Park all year round, but April, May, October, and November are the best months. The temperatures are pleasant, and the canyon isn’t so crowded.

We visited at the end of October, and even though the water was a bit cold at first, it didn’t bother us at all. 

During the summer months, it’s very hot and humid, and many tourists come to Saklikent to refresh themselves. June, July, August, and September are the hottest months in Saklikent and the driest.

Tip : Apparently, sometimes the canyon can be closed due to the floods, so try to check that beforehand. This can happen in the rainy season, during the winter months.

How long should I spend in Saklikent Gorge?

Count on spending at least 2 hours in the Saklikent Gorge. The trail itself isn’t that long, but there are many cafes and restaurants at the entrance, so you might want to chill there after you’re done. 

If you want to try some other activities in the national park, count on half a day or even a full day at Saklikent.

Can I bring food and drinks into Saklikent Gorge?

Food or drinks aren’t allowed within Saklikent Gorge. However, there’s no need to worry – they have a cafe area where you can buy water bottles and snacks.

There are also numerous restaurants and cafes just outside Saklikent Gorge to give you an option for lunch/snacks. We would recommend enjoying one of them after you’re done with activities.

Initially, we didn’t expect much, but we ended up loving it. There were few people when we visited (end of October), the temperature was perfect, and we just enjoyed a bit of trekking through the water.

I am planning to visit the canyon next week. Do you think it will be safe because of the risk of flooding in winter?

You should be able to enter the canyon area just fine, but you can not walk the whole way up as the water level will likely be too high.

I’d say if you’re in the area, it’s still very much worth a visit though.

Hi i am visiting Fethiye for a week in mid april this year will the Park and the Rafting bit be open ( small rubber ring). Also what is the dress code for Rafting snd how much does it cost?

Mid-April is already the time when the gorge should be walkable. For the tubing, we can’t confirm it, but it’s also very likely that it will be operational already.

Hello, do you end up back where you started from? Or is it a big walk back? How far into the gorge is the rafting ?? And how far into the gorge is the cafe with all the bright coloured cushions and ducks? Thank you

You end up back where you started, and it’s really not such a long walk to the end or back. It’s easily doable for everyone, including kids.

The rafting is actually done outside the gorge, where the water picks up speed. It begins at the area near the entrance.

The cafe with colored cushions is also right at the entrance to the gorge, so before you enter it.

In 1996, the site was designated a national park, thereby ensuring its preservation. Spanning 12,390 hectares, Saklikent encompasses three villages within both the Kaş and Seydikemer districts.

The gorge itself is a distinctive marvel of nature, extending 18 kilometers in length and soaring to heights of 200 meters.

Its most constricted segment narrows to a mere 2 meters, further adding to its extraordinary allure.

Saklikent Gorge is located in the Mugla Province of southwestern Turkey, nestled between the towns of Fethiye and Kas.

The gorge is situated approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Fethiye and 95 kilometers from Kas.

• Sun protection: Even though you’ll be surrounded by steep mountains and black pines, don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Entrance, Tickets, and Opening Hours

Operating hours for Saklikent National Park are from 08:00 to 22:00, seven days a week. Be aware that access to the park may occasionally be limited due to unexpected fluctuations in water levels.

If you’re traveling from Kas , the drive to Saklikent Gorge takes around 2 hours. Public transportation options are also available, or you can join a guided tour from Kas to explore the gorge.

4 Tips for Enjoying Saklikent Gorge in Fethiye, Turkey

In being one of southern Turkey's top attractions, Saklikent Gorge attracts visitors from all over the region.  

We were recommended the hike in the gorge from friends we met a few days prior and were very excited to go out and put our hiking skills to the test. 

But as soon as we got to the gorge we realized one very important thing: Saklikent Gorge is not for everyone .

Unless you are in relatively good shape and not adverse to difficult terrain, this gorge is not for you. If you are looking for an excitement like this, read on! Saklikent Gorge may be exactly what you are looking for!

But be careful to heed these 4 tips to make the most out of your experience.  Many visitors to the gorge do not and have a very difficult time because of it.

1) Wear Good Shoes

Saklikent Gorge is the largest gorge in Turkey.  It got this way by water erosion over hundreds of thousands of years from waterfalls that are still pouring to this very day.

Considering the 4km hike along the gorge is to one of these waterfalls, it should be no surprise to you when we tell you that the trail is wet.

In fact, every tip we are bringing you in this post has to do with the fact that this is a wet, slippery, and tricky hike .

The water in the gorge ranges from stagnant puddles to a fairly strong current as is the case of the very beginning of the hike. 

In many instances, the water is also clouded from the silt that is kicked up and you cannot see the bottom, leading to moments of unsure footing.  Not so much from loose rocks, but rather due to not seeing how deep your foot will go.

It is because of these reasons that good footwear is a must.

We saw many people wearing flip flops who lost one in the strong current.  Or others stubbing their toes because their feet in open-toed shoes hit a submerged rock.

These are simple mistakes that could have easily been avoided, but most visitors do not do the proper research on the gorge before visiting to know what they may need.

The main store outside of the park has plastic shoes available and even has dozens of warning signs for visitors who have poor footwear.  So if you do not have a good pair of sandals as we did (our KEENs were a lifesaver here ), you can get some pretty cheap.

2) Go Early

Saklikent Gorge is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions, and almost every day trip offered in the nearby cities during the summer months includes a stop here.

What this means for you is that the gorge becomes a mad house after 12pm.

Imagine the tricky parts we mentioned above with 30 people behind you pushing forward and 30 people ahead of you trying to pass through on the return hike.

Now add in the fact that most of these people have bad footwear, young kids, or just shouldn't be hiking here and you'll wish you got in and out before they arrived.

If you're staying in Fethiye, a bus will leave about every 20 minutes from the station near the main mosque (not the otogar bus station, but the smaller one near the marina). It takes about an hour and is around 17 Lira each way (as of August 2013).

By skipping out on the organized tour and going early you'll have an immensely rewarding experience.

To give one more detail, we must point out that when we arrived at 11am there was absolutely no one in line at the entrance.  By 12:30pm (just 90 minutes later), the line wrapped around further than we could see with at least 100 people waiting to get in.

These would be your hiking partners if you get a late start.

3) Prepare to Get Wet

There are a few moments in the gorge that are worth noting here, because a trip to this spot means you are going to get wet. And when we say you're going to get wet, we really mean you're going swimming.

The very first crossing to enter the gorge is perhaps the worst of the entire hike, even if it isn't the deepest spot you'll encounter.  There is a strong river that you must traverse with the aid of a rope. 

This crossing is actually quite easy upon retrospect, but one feature makes it unbearable: it is ice cold .

Perhaps the coldest river water we've ever felt anywhere in the world.

Don't worry though, when you get to the later parts that are chest deep, they are much warmer (yay stagnation warming!).  In fact, by the end of the hike you may even forget about the cold crossing; until you have to do it again to get out.

Getting wet is not an issue for most people; but when coupled with our next point, the chest deep water takes on a new concept.

4) Do Not Take Anything With You

It should be pretty obvious from this point that you should NOT take any items with you other than some money and a zip lock bag for your wallet and valuables.

We took our Canon D20 on this hike because it is water proof and shock proof while leaving our higher powered cameras back in the room.

Unfortunately we had a backpack with us to carry Angie's allergy medicine (stupid nut allergy), so I spent a good part of the hike trying to ensure that the bag stayed somewhat dry.  We even stopped just short of the waterfall because the last climb was a bit too rough for what we were carrying, and the crowd was becoming quite packed with unfit hikers as well.

But where we were sensible in what we brought, our bag excluded, most others were not.

Among the hike we spotted several hilarious and borderline depressing sights including:

• About a dozen SLR cameras and iPads (post ice cold river traverse)
• Two to three dozen children between the ages of 4 to 7, many of whom used Angie as a railing while digging their nails into her arm.
• Several designer hand bags held fashionista style
• A woman carrying a < 12 month old baby in a sling on her back in waist deep water (You can't make this up.  She fell back a moment after we turned around and we heard the baby crying).
• Women wearing nice dresses, and not just the religious burqa types, full dresses with short skirts.

Please don't be one of those people .  It is a wet hike in a gorge.  Only bring what you absolutely need, and a camera you won't be upset getting damaged (unlikely, but something to consider).

In The End, Saklikent Gorge is Amazing

While the above tips may make you think that Saklikent Gorge is not the best place to visit, this couldn't be further from the truth.

We think that the gorge is possibly one of the most amazing things you can see while in Fethiye, and was the highlight of our stay.

Unfortunately we are young, somewhat fit, and willing to risk a little danger for the experience (while being logical on what is “too much”).

That being said, Saklikent Gorge is not for everyone.  If you don't want to jump in cold water, wade up to your chest, or get on all fours to climb up slippery rocks, this attraction is not for you. 

If you are in a group who wants to visit this particular region you may want to check out the river tubing option at the entrance as a suitable alternative to pass the time (it looked very fun to us).

But if the above description does sound like your idea of a good time, go early, take a good pair of sandals, a waterproof camera, and have fun!

“Please don’t be one of those people” – it is funniest part of the blog post You are right Saklikent is great. have you been there on your own or on tour? If on tour then you should visit Yakapark restaurant where all is in bloom, right?

We went on our own, which was one of the reasons we could get there before the crowd.

So you went there by public transportation? The same way back? How much did it cost?

I’m pretty sure we went by dolmus. They leave pretty regularly from Fethiye (maybe every hour?). I think the cost is about $3-5 per person each way.

Saklikent Gorge : The Hidden City of Turkey

My visit to Saklikent Gorge preys on my mind as a big travel mistake. I had read about it before in guidebooks, that called the 300 meter-high and 18 kilometer-long canyon, one of the deepest in the world; hence its name translates into hidden city.

During winter, it is too dangerous to even contemplate going near the canyon because of floods.

I desperately wanted to see it, so while I was in Olu Deniz, just signed up for a guided tour that also took us to the ruins of Tlos , the village of Uzumlu and the scenic Yakapark.

Arriving at Saklikent Gorge

The tour was expertly arranged, using reliable transport and a guide who was full of useful information.

When we arrived at Saklikent Gorge, he got us through the entrance and led us under a small bridge to the canyon entrance.

A metal walkway built on the side of it, took visitors to a rocky area, where if they wish, they could wade through the freezing water to walk four kilometers further into the canyon.

Now this is where the problem lay. The walk over rocky grounds and through waist-high gushing water has huge potential to knock you off your feet. Any technically equipped travel blogger travelling solo has to make a decision.

1: Put your equipment in a waterproof bag, and have no photos to go with your article.

2: Complete the walk, and suck it up as “one of those things” should your equipment be destroyed.

3: Curse yourself for buying a camera that is not waterproof and dressing in unsuitable clothing. Then turn back.

All I could think about was my newly bought DSLR camera. If the camera got ruined, I would cry like a baby and have to abort my month-long trip of the Mediterranean coast . Traveling solo is great fun but at times, it does have some disadvantages.

Instead, I explored the restaurant area, and browsed through the shops. The souvenir shop-owner handed me a leaflet for a small, rustic hotel with tents, camping and treehouse facilities. During the day, a knowledgeable guide could take me trekking into the canyon, or on an adrenaline rushing rafting expedition. Alternatively, I could follow the hiking trails or go fishing. Located inland, there are no beaches nearby but this place was Mother Nature intimidating and teasing me at the same time. I was sold!

So technically, I could mark Saklikent Gorge off my bucket list but I haven’t. I only touched the surface of this area. This is one downfall of buying group tours with set agendas . One day, I will return, with a Go-Pro waterproof camera and book overnight accommodation. Saklikent Gorge is popular as a daytime trip but I get the feeling, staying overnight would be a much more exciting experience.

What to expect from your day trip to saklikent.

Saklikent, meaning "hidden city" in Turkish, is around 50km from Fethiye in the Mugla province, and just a 20-30 minute drive from Kalkan. It is 18km long and 300m deep; one of the deepest canyons in the world. It was opened to the public as a national park in 1996 and it has since proven very popular with tourists. There is a small entrance fee per person, though this is normally included in the price you pay if you book it as a tour. You can visit all year round, though between November and March, the water can get very high, so you would not be able to gain entry to walk through. From April onwards, when most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through the gorge,  around 4km of the gorge is usually walkable. Sensible submersible shoes with grips are essential as the stones beneath the water can get quite slippery. Sea shoes are ideal but if you don't have any, jelly shoes can be hired at the entrance for a small fee, although may not be as comfortable as your own.

If you decide to visit Saklikent Gorge and it is your first time, we would recommend booking a day trip to include a visit to the ancient ruins of Tlos and BBQ lunch at a nearby fresh trout restaurant. You could also hire a car and drive yourself (free parking at the gorge), or a visit can also be included in a jeep safari tour. Prices are very reasonable and the tour guides very helpful. If you have booked a tour, when you arrive at Saklikent, you will be told about the river rafting option and are able to pay for this at the start. Bear in mind if you do decide on the river rafting, this will leave you less time to walk through the gorge.

When you walk over the bridge to the entrance, the first thing that strikes you is the huge, 10 metre crevice in the rock. Then the vast sculpted walls towering high above and the sound of water rushing through the ravines. There is just one obstacle before you can walk through the gorge, and that is crossing the river. The fresh mountain water is notably cold and is often up to waist height over this 6-8 metre stretch of river, so be sure to wear clothes you don't mind getting wet. You may notice a young man with a camera appearing every so often to capture your movements as you cross the river. When you complete your trip and head back towards the bus, they have a stand displaying the photographs, which can be purchased for a few Lira each. This can provide a nice memorial of the day, especially if you hadn't the chance to take any photos yourself.

The water is very shallow in parts but deeper in others (not normally above the knee), depending on what time of year you visit. The gorge walls create all sorts of shapes as you look ahead of you, and if you have a camera, you will find plenty of photo opportunities on the way through. After you have walked for around 40 minutes, you will come to a waterfall, and if you want to go on further, prepare to get wet again!

When you have finished walking through the gorge, you can take a leisurely wander around the little shops lining the riverside, selling novelty gifts, honey, jewellery etc. Across the other side is a cafe/restaurant and there are platforms above the water where you can relax with a Turkish tea, Efes or an ice cream and dip your feet in the cool water.

There is also a swimming pool which is filled with river water (filtered first), this is a welcome respite from the heat of the summer and great for the children if you have some spare  time.   

River Rafting

For the more adventurous types, you can set off down the river in a ring raft. This is an extra cost per person and is great fun. They equip you with a large inflatable ring with handles and a paddle. Ensure you wear something you don't mind getting wet. With the longer route there is also an option to have a mud bath at the end so bear this in mind!

After a quick lesson by the river, each person gets into their ring, the gentle rapids sweep you away and off you go. The water is usually only about knee height although the current can be quite strong. The gentle rapids carry you down stream for about 30-40 minutes and you are accompanied by experienced guides along the way;- so if you get stuck there is always someone to help and point you in the right direction!

What to take with you;

• Sensible submersible shoes with grip -sea shoes are ideal (though you can hire slip on jelly shoes for a small fee)
• Clothes you don't mind getting wet
• Camera (in a waterproof bag or case you can carry)
• Suncream 
• Bottles of water
