Come out and Play: Live Music Is Back on June 15

Do i need a reservation what about a mask.

As of June 15, 2021, the San Diego Zoo, in accordance with state and local coronavirus health guidelines, has lifted most of its pandemic-era restrictions.

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.

In an email to members, the zoo said date-specific reservations – a system in place for the past few months that helped the zoo adhere to capacity limitations – are no longer needed.

“If you already have a reservation, it will still be honored and there is nothing further you need to do,” the email said.

Entry is now open to out-of-state visitors, too.

Now, as far as face coverings go, the San Diego Zoo said masks “will no longer be required on grounds.”

The zoo said this is especially true for visitors who are fully vaccinated. Those who are not vaccinated may still want to bring their mask.

“Those who are not fully vaccinated are recommended by the CDC to wear facial coverings,” the email read.

Another change: COVID-related health screenings prior to guest entry into the zoo are no longer required, including temperature checks. The San Diego Zoo said this should free up some parking spaces at the landmark (some were roped off to make room for screening stations during the pandemic) and reduce wait times. If you don't feel well, don't visit.

And what about proof of vaccination?

“Proof of vaccination will not be required upon entry,” the San Diego Zoo’s email said.

You can read all of the health protocols on the zoo's website here ahead of your visit.

Which Attractions Are Open at the San Diego Zoo Now?

Some attractions at the San Diego Zoo are open and some remain closed. A daily list of changes or closures (due to refurbishing, capacity, weather or special events)  is usually posted at the entrance of the park, and guests can check that out when they arrive. Here are more updates on attractions .

Some Highlights: What’s Open (Besides the Animal Habitats):

Skyfari Aerial Tram : Hours: 11 a.m. to close, Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to close on weekends. What Is It? A slow, airborne ride from one end of the zoo to the other – over the treetops and with gorgeous views of the zoo and surrounding Balboa Park (don’t miss this). Important: Kids younger than 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult; wheelchairs and strollers don’t fit on the aerial tram, but there’s stroller parking near the attraction, and you can always come back for your stroller. Cost: It’s included with all admission tickets and memberships.

Guided Bus Tour Returns on June 15, 2021 Hours: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily What Is It? A classic San Diego Zoo attraction, this is a narrated, round-trip, 35-minute tour through the zoo on a double-decker bus that boards near the zoo’s entrance. Important: No reservations; the Guided Bus Tour is available on a first come, first serve basis. This tour is accessible for guests using wheelchairs. Kangaroo Bus Returns on June 15, 2021 Hours: 10:30 a.m. to close What Is It? A non-narrated transportation service that lets visitors hop on and off at four stops around the San Diego Zoo (the stops are marked on your zoo map with a yellow kangaroo icon). Important: Folded strollers are allowed aboard the Kangaroo Bus, space permitting. Cost: It’s included with all admission tickets and memberships.

4D Theater Hours: Opens at 10:30 a.m., with showings throughout day; last show is at 5 p.m. What Is It? A theater showcasing short, amazing animal movies in 3D or 4D. Important: Due to COVID-19 precautions, the screenings right now are operated with limited seating and without water or air special effects. Cost: $7 per person (tickets available at the theater).

What’s Closed?

As of June 16, 2021, these attractions are temporarily closed at the San Diego Zoo:

  • Botanical Tours
  • Animal Shows
  • Animal Encounters
  • Playgrounds/Play Areas

For info on the animal habitats at the San Diego Zoo and where to find them, check this out.

What's New at the Zoo?

When San Diegans and tourists visit the San Diego Zoo this summer, they’ll find two new wildlife experiences: Komodo Kingdom and Hummingbird Habitat.

The Kenneth C. Griffin Komodo Kingdom is dedicated to the Earth’s largest lizards – Komodo dragons – and their unique island ecosystem. The William E. Cole Family Hummingbird Habitat is dedicated to the tiny but might hummingbird and its pollinating powers. You can read all about these new habitats here.

And, as always, visitors to the San Diego Zoo will be able to explore the 100-acre attraction known for its lush habitats, which is home to more than 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing about 660 species.

What About San Diego Zoo Safari Park?

The highlights:

  • Reservations are no longer required to visit.
  • Fully vaccinated visitors do not have to wear masks.
  • Unvaccinated visitors age 2 and older are still required to wear a face mask while inside any indoor space at Safari Park.
  • You do not need to show proof of vaccination.

8 Largest Zoos in the World

By Mike Kaplan · Last updated on November 3, 2023

So what is the largest zoo in the world? The answer to this question depends on what criteria is used for the term “large”. Are we measuring the number of species held in captivity or the total land area of the zoo. If we consider only the later the Red McCombs Wildlife in Texas with its 12,000 acres could be considered the biggest zoo in the world. But is has only 20 different animal species and is more of a wildlife preserve than an actual zoo. Just considering the number of species however also doesn’t seem to fit the bill.

This list therefore considers both these features to determine which is the largest zoo in the world .

8. Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is a non-profit zoo located just north of Columbus, Ohio . The Columbus Zoo is home to over 5,000 animals representing over 700 species divided into geographic regions of the world. In 2004 the zoo started work to expand the 82 acres (37 ha) zoo over the next 10 years. The 120 acres expansion is planned to include a polar environment as well as an African savanna.

7. Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo

Open for visitors since 1864, the Moscow Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. Today, the Moscow Zoo has over 6000 animals representing 927 species and covers an area of about 53 acres (21.5 ha) making it Russia’s largest zoo.

6. San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the world with over 4,000 animals of more than 800 species. The 100 acres (40 ha) of parkland is leased from the City of San Diego . The sunny maritime climate of southern California is well suited to many animals and almost all of the major exhibits of the San Diego Zoo are in the open-air. The San Diego Zoo is also extremely active in conservation and preservation efforts and many species are bred in captivity for release into their native habitats where appropriate.

5. Toronto Zoo

Toronto Zoo

Located in Toronto and encompassing 710 acres (287 ha), the Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in Canada. The zoo is currently home to over 16,000 animals representing over 491 species. The animals are divided into seven geographic regions: Indo-Malaya, Africa, Americas, Tundra Trek, Australasia, Eurasia and the Canadian Domain.

4. Bronx Zoo

Bronx Zoo

Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo in New York City is the biggest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres (107 ha) of park lands and naturalistic habitats. The zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals of 650 species, many of which are endangered. Some of the exhibits at the Bronx Zoo, such as World of Birds and World of Reptiles, are arranged by taxonomy, while others, such as African Plains and Wild Asia, are arranged geographically.

3. Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo

Founded in 1906 during the late Qing Dynasty, the Beijing Zoo has one of the largest animal collections in China. The zoo is home to 14,500 animals representing over 450 species of land animals and over 500 species of marine animals. The zoo occupies an area of 219 acres (89 ha). The Beijing Zoo is probably best known for its collection of rare animals endemic to China including the Giant Pandas, which are the park’s most popular attraction.

2. Berlin Zoological Garden

Berlin Zoological Garden

Opened in 1844 the Berlin Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten Berlin) is the oldest and best known zoo in Germany. It covers 84 acres (34 ha) and is located in Berlin’s Tiergarten. With more than 1,500 different species and around 17,000 animals the zoo presents the largest collection of species in the world. Famous inhabitants of the zoo include Bao Bao the Giant Panda and Knut the polar bear (Knut died unexpectedly in March 2011).

1. Henry Doorly Zoo

Henry Doorly Zoo

Nebraska’s number one paid attendance attraction, the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is home to about 17,000 animals of 962 species. It encompasses over 130 acres (53 ha) of land area. Although there are bigger zoos in terms of acreage or species numbers, none rank as high as the Henry Doorly Zoo if both these categories are combined. For this reason it is listed here as the largest zoo in the world. It also features the largest cat complex in North America, the world’s largest indoor swamp, the world’s largest indoor desert, as well as the largest glazed geodesic dome in the world.

I’m from Omaha and go to the zoo multiple times every year. Every single time I’ve gone to the zoo I have found something new. I nanny four little girls and this is the best place to take them, there are multiple splash pads, tons of exhibits, lots of playgrounds, and tons of interactive activities.

I am from Lincoln and have been to many amazing museums in Nebraska, but I do think having an amazing zoo is the only way we can get people to come here in the first place. But its nice to stop by the zoo every year or two to see what has changed and to also visit my favorite places such as the Lied Jungle.

Thank you for this list. I love zoos and have visited many all over the world. But the largest collection of animals in the world actually belongs to a company that controls 11 parks and is based right here in the United States. Sea World Entertainment companies care for 86,000 animals. There is no other zoo organization that even comes close.

I am taking 3 children of various ages to the Henry Doorly Zoo tomorrow. I know I shall leave tired and broke, but I have always loved zoo’s. My plan this summer is to see the full zoo…all the animals, and each species and sub-species. I think I can get it done in about 4 trips. I am from Kenya, East Africa, so I have some of these animals in the wild!!

Henry Doorly Zoo is an amazing place. It really takes a couple days to explore. I would highly recommend it whether you are young or old. San Diego Zoo will receive two new giant pandas from China after nearly all pandas in U.S. were returned

By Caitlin O'Kane

April 29, 2024 / 9:41 AM EDT / CBS News

After nearly all of the giant pandas on loan at U.S. zoos were returned to China, the San Diego Zoo has announced they will get two new pandas from the country. They are expected to arrive this summer.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced Sunday that its care team leaders visited China and met two giant pandas – Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, who will be cared for at the California zoo.

Yun Chuan is almost 5 years old and is the grandson of Bai Yun, who lived at the San Diego Zoo for 23 years, the zoo said in a news release. His name is a combination of his grandmother's and the province where he came from, Chuan.

Xin Bao is almost four years old and, like Yun Chuan, was born at China's Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base. The name Xin Bao means "new treasure of prosperity and abundance," and the zoo describes her as "a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears."

"Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special," said Dr. Megan Owen, vice president of conservation science at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. "It's inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can't wait to welcome them to San Diego."

Pandas

The China Wildlife and Conservation Association has lent pandas to the U.S. since 1972  – an agreement dubbed "panda diplomacy." Under the agreement, the Smithsonian National Zoo, Atlanta Zoo, Memphis Zoo and San Diego Zoo all received pandas and worked with China on research and conservation projects.

The agreement with the zoos was extended several times. In 1987,  San Diego  received two pandas for a 100-day visit, but eventually signed a 12-year agreement and received two pandas, named Bai Yun and Shi Shi, in 1996. The agreement kept getting extended and a total of six pandas were born at the zoo. All of them returned to China by 2019.

The Memphis Zoo had a 20-year loan agreement with China, which ended in April 2023,  the Associated Press  reported.

And the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. started receiving pandas in 1972. In 2023, their agreement ended and the zoo returned two pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, who had been at the zoo since 2000, and their baby Xiao Qi Ji, who was born in 2020.

The Atlanta Zoo is the only zoo in the U.S. to still have pandas on loan from China, but their agreement, which was put in place in the mid-1990s, expires in 2024 and they are expected to return their pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang and their offspring, Ya Lun and Xi Lun by the end of the year.

The San Diego Zoo said it met with conservation partners from the China Wildlife Conservation Association to discuss research and conservation programs. Over the past 30 years, the zoo has partnered with conservation institutions in China to study the reproductive behavior, physiology, nutritional requirements, habitat needs and genetics of pandas.

The zoo even developed a panda milk formula, which, along with other research, has helped increase survival rates of baby pandas from 5% to 95%. They also completed the first successful artificial insemination of a giant panda outside of China.

"Our partnership over the decades has served as a powerful example of how, when we work together, we can achieve what was once thought to be impossible," said Owen. "We have a shared goal of creating a sustainable future for giant pandas."

As of 2023, only 1,864 pandas remain in the wild, mostly in China's Sichuan Province. Breeding programs have been successful and the once-endangered species was upgraded to "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2017,  according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Beyond Measure

United by purpose and fueled by passion, volunteers are helping us achieve our mission.

Four SDZWA volunteers

Celebrating the Invaluable Impact of Our Volunteers

People are the heartbeat of everything we do. All across San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance , nearly 2,000 community volunteers breathe enthusiasm, commitment, and passion into our mission. They’re diverse in skills and backgrounds, putting their unique expertise into action for wildlife, people, and the ecosystems we all share.  We’re honored to celebrate their remarkable impact with a recently achieved milestone: three million recorded volunteer hours for our organization. That’s the equivalent of over 342 years! As they generously give their time, these dedicated volunteers make an essential difference for our work in San Diego and across the globe, and we are so grateful for all they make possible.

For over 5.5 million guests who join us at the San Diego Zoo  and San Diego Zoo Safari Park each year, volunteers are among the first friendly faces they see. They can easily be spotted throughout our conservation parks in their signature red shirts, and they are never far away. Each volunteer is quick to share a smile and a helping hand, answer questions, and provide insights on the wildlife we care for as well as our conservation efforts worldwide. With every connection they make, they’re transforming visitors of all ages into allies for wildlife.

safari san diego zoo hours

If you were to look behind the scenes, volunteers are everywhere there, too, supporting conservation science, wildlife health and care, special events, human resources, and so much more. They work closely with our teams to create engaging experiences for the wildlife we care for, assist with field research, and tell our stories—all of which helps us achieve our mission.

safari san diego zoo hours

The impact made by our volunteers is beyond measure, and we’re deeply grateful to have them as members of our family. In honor of National Volunteer Week, we connected with a few of these superheroes to discover their inspiration for joining, what they love about volunteering, and their top insider tips to make your visits to the Zoo and Safari Park even more fun and memorable.

What’s Your “Why”?

No two roads to volunteering are the same, yet each journey converges here with a shared sense of purpose. Our volunteers are inspired to join us for a variety of reasons, including encouragement from family and friends, interactions with other volunteers, and their profound love of wildlife. Many have visited the Zoo and Safari Park throughout their lives, and volunteering helps them further connect with the parks and mission they hold dear. All are seeking a meaningful and tangible way to make a difference.

For Yoli Banda, who’s been volunteering with the San Diego Zoo since 2009, joining as a volunteer was the gratifying next step for a long-standing routine. “I used to walk the Zoo after work for many years,” she shared. “I would see volunteers out and about since I was there two or three times a week. I thought it would be fun to become a volunteer when I retired.”

safari san diego zoo hours

Others are inspired to join as a way to get involved in conservation. “I am an engineer by profession, but I have always been interested in wildlife conservation,” noted Shankar Shivappa, a second-year volunteer with the Conservation Science team. “Volunteering for conservation organizations is a great way for me to contribute my time and energy.”

Throughout our organization, volunteers leave their mark, securing the future for wildlife through their dedication and expertise.

Perks of the Job

Each day as a volunteer brings new discoveries and memorable moments, and there are lots of reasons volunteers come back week after week and year after year. Of all the fulfilling parts of volunteering, some standout favorites are our vibrant community, the endless learning opportunities, and the chance to give back.

For Zoo volunteer Craig Sanders, there’s so much to love. “The staff and the volunteers are always bright, cheerful, happy-go-lucky,” he commented. “And each encounter with a guest is fun, exciting, and cool. It’s a great time engaging our guests.”

safari san diego zoo hours

The learning opportunities that come with sharing our conservation message are another favorite for him. To Craig, “the insight that has been shared by the volunteer leadership team, wildlife care specialists, and peer volunteers has been extremely informative, valuable, and overwhelming in a positive way because of the wealth of knowledge and the caring generosity.”

Pam Wells, a volunteer at the Safari Park and Beckman Center for Conservation Research, feels similarly. “My favorite part about volunteering is the opportunity to interact with a wide variety of people, learn about our conservation efforts, and share stories with our guests.” Using their expertise, volunteers act as key conduits of knowledge and inspire countless allies to protect wildlife.

safari san diego zoo hours

It’s not just the guests volunteers love interacting with, it’s each other. Zoo volunteer Mary Falwell says the best part is “the chance to meet and work with wonderful people while supporting a great organization.” This was echoed over and over by other volunteers. “Exceptional,” “amazing,” and “extremely nice” are a few of the adjectives they used to describe those they work alongside. Our team members feel the same way about the incredible volunteers who help them out!

Words of Wisdom

With thorough knowledge of the ins and outs at the Zoo and Safari Park, volunteers are on-grounds experts. They know our parks better than just about anyone and are ready to point you in the right direction. Their recommendations can help you get the most out of your experience, and they’ve got some tips to get you started.

safari san diego zoo hours

Headed to the Zoo? Volunteers suggest taking advantage of the resources offered. “For first-time guests, I always tell them they can take the bus tour to get a good layout of the Zoo,” Yvette Lopez suggests. Plus it’s a great way to learn about our mission and the wildlife we care for. “I also recommend downloading the app,” Laurie Fuller adds. “Especially to families with kids who're going to get hungry. Having access to the menus from each dining establishment can aid guests in planning their day.”

safari san diego zoo hours

At the Safari Park, Conservation Science volunteer Denise Davis advises guests to slow down and take a few minutes to soak it all in. “Make sure you spend time sitting, watching the wildlife, and enjoying your surroundings,” she shared. There’s magic in those quieter moments, and you’ll be in awe of how much you can observe.

Another sincere piece of wisdom came from Kathy Wollman, who’d been visiting the Zoo and Safari Park for decades before becoming a volunteer six years ago. She encourages visitors to purchase memberships. “This is the best place in the world to be with your family,” she commented, speaking from experience after many years of bringing her own family here.

safari san diego zoo hours

As unparalleled sources for insider intel, the latest on new babies, and routes tailored just for you, our volunteers can help make your adventure unforgettable. Be sure to say hello and tap into their expertise on your next visits to the Zoo and Safari Park!

A Heartfelt Thank You

Our volunteers bring us closer to our vision of a world where all life thrives. “Conservation starts with people, and volunteers help us connect with people from all over the world to inspire a passion for wildlife,” said Shawn Dixon, chief operating officer for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “We’re so honored to be supported by so many members of our community. They help make up the heart and soul of our organization, and we are grateful to have such incredible allies as a part of our Alliance.”

To our extraordinary volunteers, thank you for all that you give, and for over three million hours served. As a vital bridge between people and wildlife, your impact reaches far beyond our conservation parks. You inspire us, and allies worldwide, every single day with your commitment. It’s our honor to walk alongside you on this conservation journey.

If you’re passionate about wildlife and are eager to make a difference, consider joining us as a volunteer today. Rewarding and fulfilling experiences await!

But the real draw is dinnertime when you can kick back, relax, and enjoy some of the most authentic and delicious Mexican food on the west coast. Café Coyote is a favorite with its festive décor, strolling mariachis, and open-air atmosphere. There is also a wide variety of shops in the area like those at Bazaar Del Mundo which sell everything from traditional Mexican clothing and jewelry to pottery and other trinkets.

Grunion Runs

If you’re dying to take your kids to the beach in the dead of night to stare at mysterious fish, we’ve got you covered. Grunions are a species of silver-colored fish that leave the water at night to spawn on beaches during spring and summer in SoCal. Spawning occurs on nights with full moons and new moons after high tides and continues for many hours. The best runs usually occur on the second and third nights of the four-evening period. Be sure to bring a flashlight for easier spotting and a jacket in case it's chilly. It’s also important to let the fish spawn without disturbing them, so remind littles to keep their eyes peeled and hands to themselves. A schedule of expected runs can be found here .
