The power button is a bit tricky to use.

We found the dryer — which has four heat settings (up to 302 degrees Fahrenheit), three speed settings, and a cold shot — able to fully dry our hair relatively quickly when compared with other dryers we tested. The LCD display is a nice touch so you can see the exact temperature you’re dispersing onto your hair. An added bonus: it comes with a travel case for extra convenient toting.

This is by far the most affordable option on this list if you want something budget-friendly to travel with.

It works best on thin and fine hair types.

If you don’t use a travel dryer often and prefer a model with a budget-friendly price point, this Revlon model is a good bet. It has a narrowly concentrated airflow, which increases airflow speed and targets wider sections of hair than a regular concentrator, making it convenient for blowouts and styling. The nozzle can be rotated and locked into place either vertically or horizontally so you can focus air on your strands from any angle. It also includes a diffuser for use on curly hair. We found that it helped reduce frizz and boost shine thanks to its ceramic tourmaline technology. Mane Addicts This Totally Blows! Compact Hair Dryer : Though we loved that this lightweight model comes with multiple attachments including a concentrated nozzle, a diffuser, and a comb, it was a bit expensive considering the limited heat options.

T3 Fit Hair Dryer : We love the cord length of this small and sturdy hair dryer, but the speed and heat settings are on the outside of the handle, which makes it a bit difficult to change the settings as the dryer is in use.

First, we tested 34 of the top hair dryers in our labs, sorting through the overall results to pick out the most travel-friendly options, specifically looking for ones that were compact, portable, and lightweight. In addition to editors testing the products, we also had expert hair stylists use the products on others in our laboratory tests to get some professional insight. After the initial test, we tried the products out at home at least twice a week over the course of four weeks to make sure the hair dryers were user-friendly for everyday travelers without the help of hair professionals.

Tips for Buying a Travel Hair Dryer

Pay attention to size and weight.

If your luggage space is limited, you’ll be better off with one of the smaller items on our list. Foldable hair dryers are particularly convenient for packing because they can collapse into a more compact shape. If you’re working against suitcase weight limits, pay special attention to the weight of the hair dryer — there are great options even at under one pound. 

Make sure it works for your hair type

You don’t want a dryer that’s too weak or too hot for your hair type, which can defeat the purpose of the product or leave your hair damp or frizzy. To prevent this, buy a travel dryer with similar wattage and power settings to your at-home hair dryer, and be sure to give it a test run before you travel. Many typical dryers are about 1800 watts.

If your hair dryer comes with a carrying case or pouch, place the dryer inside the pouch before adding it to your suitcase. A packing cube or any cloth bag can also help keep your dryer safe. Put the dryer in a padded part of your suitcase (for example, in a compartment where it’ll be surrounded by soft clothing). If your travels take you abroad, dual-voltage is arguably the most important thing to look out for, since these can safely be used for international travel. The box or product listing should explicitly state either “dual-voltage” or “120/240V,” the latter of which indicates it works with outlets up to 240 volts. Since American outlets operate on 120 volts and European outlets operate on 220 volts, this is key. The Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) comes in one color: white. As someone who has owned bright red and shocking pink hair dryers in the past, I was disappointed at the lack of options. Nevertheless, if you’re someone who welcomes simple, sleek-looking appliances, then this hair dryer is for you. An interesting design feature that makes up for the relatively basic look is the honeycomb air inlet at the rear of the device.

In terms of storage, the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) folds inward, parallel to the body of the hair dryer. While the folding feature does offer space-saving capabilities, the ability to prevent the cord from unravelling – via a velcro strap, perhaps – would have maximized its storage potential. Nevertheless, folded, the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) is easy to store in a drawer, plus the hair dryer comes with a ring for hanging, too. The hair dryer measures 7.5 x 9.5 inches (19 x 25cm), or 7.5 x 5.5 inches ( 19 x 14cm) when folded, and the body of the hair dryer weighs around 1lb (450g).

Setting up the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) for use is super-easy. Simply unfold the hair dryer, attach the oscillating quick-dry nozzle, plug it in and you’re good to go. The Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) is easy to use, but I’d recommend glancing over the user manual to get the best use out of the oscillating quick-dry nozzle attachment. Having used many hair dryers in the past, this was the first time I'd experienced a nozzle that moves on its own, side to side, to dry hair faster. Once you have attached the quick-dry nozzle to the hair dryer, you pull at it gently till you hear a click. The attachment will still be on, but the automatic swing mode will be engaged.

Panasonic claims that this attachment speeds up drying time, the first claim we decided to test. Using a standard-sized hair dryer, in this case Conair's 1875 Hair Dryer, I timed how long it took for my hair to dry. For context, I was working with fine, mid-length hair with layers. With 1875W of power at its disposal, the Conair 1875 hair dryer was able to dry my damp hair in five and a half minutes. Using the Panasonic hair dryer for the first time, with its 1440W of power, I didn’t believe it would be able to dry my hair faster than the Conair 1875. However, turning on the hair dryer, the nozzle began to move side to side on its own, and at the dryer’s highest speed setting, it also took just five and a half minutes to dry my hair completely.

The second feature of the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) we decided to test was the patented nanoe technology. Moisturizing one's hair is key to keeping it healthy and shiny; the nanoe technology atomises airborne water particles to easily penetrate hair to do so. Moisture also helps tame flyaways and reduce static. Again, we decided to compare results using the Conair 1875. The Conair 1875 gives my hair a lot of volume but leaves it looking frizzy and dry. The first thing I noticed after drying my hair with the Panasonic model was how much healthier it looked. There were fewer flyaways, less frizz – but also less volume. As someone who values volume, I was slightly disappointed by the flat look of my hair. Even so, this isn’t a deal breaker for the Panasonic hair dryer since it’s possible to achieve volume with a lower power hair dryer; it just takes more time and tools.

Since this is a travel-sized version of the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W), the model arrives with more simplified setting options compared to the original. There’s no cool shot, which means users will have to switch between temperatures for setting their hair. If you’re someone who enjoys spending time on your hair, and doesn't mind a less powerful hair dryer, then the moisturizing benefits of the nanoe technology make the Panasonic nanoe worth considering.  

On its highest speed setting, the hair dryer averages 79db for noise, and an average of 70db at medium speed. While it couldn’t be described as a quiet hair dryer, the sound level doesn't stand out as being over the top. In terms of maintenance, the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) is easy to clean. Simply use a damp soft cloth to wipe off any smudges or fingerprints on the outside, and clean out the nanoe outlet and air inlet once a month. To clean the nanoe outlet, insert a dampened cotton swab until it stops and turn it two to three times. To maintain the air inlet, simply use a tissue or toothbrush to wipe away any lint or hair.

Personal hair-style preferences aside, the Panasonic nanoe Travel Hair Dryer (EH-NA2C-W) performs exactly as promised, drying hair quickly for a travel-sized hair dryer, while delivering the benefits of the patented nanoe technology in the form of healthier and less frizzy hair.

As if Kmart didn’t already have everything, the budget department store now sells whitegoods under the Anko brand online − including clothes dryers! But, are they worth it or a waste of money? Here’s our expert review of Kmart’s clothes dryers below and how they compare to other budget buys from Kogan and ALDI.

Kmart clothes dryers review

Kmart only sells vented clothes dryers under the Anko brand. The range has easy-to-use features and basic functionalities but may be more suited to smaller jobs and households of two or three people, rather than large families and big laundry loads. Kmart currently only sells two clothes dryer models:

• Kmart 4.5kg Vented Dryer: $249 RRP*
• Kmart 7kg Vented Dryer: $349 RRP*

Kmart 4.5kg Vented Dryer − $249 RRP*

This compact 4.5kg vented dryer comes with only three drying options (air dry, heat dry & cooldown), and a variable heating selector. It also features adjustable legs for easier placement on your benchtop and a reversible control panel. It can also be wall-mounted to maximise your floor space. This model is designed with an exterior white finish and stainless-steel inner drum. It has a two-star energy efficiency rating and retails for just $249.

Kmart 7kg Vented Dryer − $349 RRP*

Compact in size and easy-to-use features, this Anko dryer is perfect for smaller laundry rooms with little space or apartments. It features four drying programs including cotton extra dry, cotton standard dry, synthetics extra dry and synthetics standard dry. There’s also an anti-crease mode, delay function, auto power-off, a safety thermostat heater and ‘error’ alarm. This model is designed with an exterior white finish, stainless-steel inner drum and removable lint filter. It retails for $349 and has a two-star energy efficiency rating.

Our verdict: “Kmart clothes dryers aren’t built for big jobs and may be more suitable for smaller households with limited laundry space,” said Canstar Blue’s Home & Lifestyle Editor Megan Birot.

“If you’re looking for a dryer that will tackle big loads with ease, including blankets and sheets, then it may be worth shopping elsewhere.”

Kmart clothes dryers vs Kogan clothes dryers

Kogan clothes dryers beat Kmart’s range on all fronts, including features, drying programs (including functions to dry winter blankets on high heat), heat settings, and energy efficiency. However, Kmart’s models are slightly cheaper, although remember the old adage: cheap appliances are rarely good and good appliances are rarely cheap. Kogan dryers also come with a 12-month warranty.

ALDI has previously sold a comparable 5kg Stirling vented dryer in Special Buys for $199, and while it may offer more drying programs and functions, than Kmart’s 4.5kg vented model – it’s not necessarily a good buy (if online reviews are anything to go by), so it’s best to err on the side of caution and compare other budget brands.

Are Kmart’s clothes dryers any good?

If you’re looking for easy-to-use controls and basic functionality, then a Kmart dryer might be worth it, although keep in mind the department store’s models have limited capacity and probably can’t handle big laundry jobs well. Kmart is often rated highly for value for money and ease of use in most consumer ratings of small appliances, but the jury (consumers) is still out on whether it does whitegoods well. Most Kmart appliances are sold under the official brand name Anko, although there are also some generic branded products with no brand name.
