Am I mis-remembering? I recall that INXS were due to play but a problem with their tour bus (perhaps a crash?) meant that they couldn’t get to the gig in time, so Quo played a second set. I’ve no recollection of Zeno at all.

Inxs did play at the Wembley gig, and were rumoured for the Newcastle gig. Not sure why they didn’t play. I don’t think Quo played a second set, but could be wrong. To be honest I don’t recall Zeno either; they would have played by the time I arrived. They are billed as having played. Can any one else remind us both ? 🙂 Cheers Peter

Wow – I was searching my childhood memories of attending the Newcastle gig , and definitely INXS were due to play – but their bus did indeed crash.

I was at that gig and inxs never turned up due to helicopter problems if I remember rightly, Status Quo did a double length gig. I cannot remember Zeno but might have been in the working men’s club having a pint.

I was there in Newcastle. I’ve always thought that the second support was supposed to be Big Country, although you’re all right in saying that they didn’t arrive – bus problem we heard – and Quo did indeed do a longer stint. Just a shame that Queen couldn’t do the same. Dunno where all this crap about Zeno?? came from. They certainly weren’t there.

Just to clear it up, Zeno did indeed open up the Queen show at St. James. INXS were due to be playing but from what I remember of the stage announcements on the day, the members of INXS were actually at the venue but their gear was stuck in traffic following a crash on the M1, so Zeno were drafted in at short notice as a replacement.

Just come across this site after finding my original ticket for the gig in a box.

Zeno were indeed there, a german rock band. I was only 14 at the time and was in from the start. INXS were due to play but were involved in some crash on the A1 (or a crash prevented them from attending) so Quo played an extended set to cover. an immense evening.

I was also there. If I remember correctly Harvey Goldsmith made an announcement explaining that all the gear belonging to INXS was stuck on the motorway and they could not play, but please be patient as Status Quo are backstage rehearsing more songs. Zeno opened up and I thought they were terrible; lots of screeching guitars. Quo were fantastic but Queen were MAGIC (see what I did there).

Zeno were most definitely there, although I don’t remember much as I fainted during the Quo set due to an illness, a virus apparently. I had just met my future wife before the gig, but never went on first date until weeks later was because of this virus!

Anyway, as bad as Zeno were in your view, I became a huge fan of their music from the end of 1986 as my brother bought me their first album on a one of those newfangled things then a CD! I have collected all of their music since. Check them out, great band, excellent singer Michael Flexig, and guitar maestro, Zeno Roth, yes, Uli Jon Roth’s brother. As I said great band, but a very German band!

Sadly, and the reason I have come across this blog and am writing in reply to this post is I have just read that Zeno died on 6 February this year 2018 after long illness. Wonderful guitar player and songwriter, will be sadly missed by those in the music world and his many fans.

Just found this. I was there too, at the tender age of 11. My first gig and with my parents too 😀 . I remember all of the same. Bus issue for INXS and I seem to remember it was their gear, not them. Definitely remember the longer Quo set.

I was living in Hebburn and was 13 when this concert took place, I remember it vividly, because I was a huge fan and desperately wanted to go, my brother recalls trying to get tickets but the demand was overwhelming, long and short, we didn’t go. Remember our kid saying, ah we’ll see them next time, little did we know … looking at your previous posts and seeing them at the legendary Newcastle city hall, what can I say, I’m really quite jealous, which is a bit tragic given I’m coming up 50! But hey in rock n roll you never grow up eh.

Yes keep in that mindset Gavin. Rock ‘n’ roll can keep us all young! Happy days Peter

queen magic tour newcastle

In June the mighty Queen machine rolled into action for the very last time with Freddie, and the Magic tour of Europe commenced. Using the biggest stage and lighting rig ever assembled, the band played mostly stadiums and some large arenas across Europe and the UK.

Following an unusually long period of rehearsal at Wembley in London during May and June, Queen travel to Stockholm for the first Magic Tour shows.

The Magic Tour incorporates the UK and nine European countries only. It is never taken to America, Japan or Canada, as were most other tours. It consists of twenty-six performances at twenty separate locations, played over an eight week period. It includes Queen’s first and only show in Budapest, Hungary, and also their only concert at the beautiful Knebworth Park site, in Hertfordshire.

Queen are again Britain’s most popular band and the UK shows break all attendance records like never before. The queue for tickets at Newcastle (the first show in England) was longer than that seen in 1974, when Newcastle United reached the FA Cup Final. All 38,000 tickets were sold within an hour. The proceeds from this show are donated by the band and promoter Harvey Goldsmith to the international Save The Children Fund.

At the two Wembley Stadium shows, the show itself incorporated the largest lighting rig ever assembled for a live show, weighing over nine and a half tons. The stage was the largest ever erected there and measured 160 ft wide and over 52 ft high from ground level to the top of the lights. It was capable of filling one entire end of Wembley and was so heavy that supports had to be bored into the concrete foundations of the stadium.

The second show is filmed by Tyne Tees Television, and later broadcast as their first ever radio / television simulcast, transmitted to all 48 stations in the Independent Radio Network. It is also released in edited form on home video and later a complete version is issued on DVD.

The Manchester show on July 16th sold out so quickly that it was reported that more than double the amount of tickets could have been sold for the 35,000 seat football venue, thus making Queen’s concert the fastest selling show in the history of the city.

They made history on July 27th when they played at the Nepstadion in Hungary. It was the first time that a major rock band had played a stadium date in the Eastern Bloc, and was filmed by the Hungarian Film State company Mafilm Dialog. The filming necessitates using nearly every available 35mm television camera in the country, seventeen in all. This show too would be released on home video and titled Live In Budapest.

Queen's final show of the tour took place at Knebworth Park on August 9th, with the 15th century mansion house being a fitting location for what would sadly prove to be Queen’s very last concert with Freddie. Before an audience variously estimated at between 160,000 and 200,000, Queen certainly went out in style.

Thirty years ago, Queen were champions of the world and the biggest band on the planet.

And, on this day in 1986, Freddie Mercury and the boys rocked St James’ Park to its foundations, sending the 38,000 crowd into meltdown.

Of all the giant rock shows that graced the home of Newcastle United during the 1980s - the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan - this one really was “a kind of magic”.

Queen had made their North East debut at Newcastle Mayfair in August 1973, after which they headed North regularly, playing on one occasion at Sunderland Locarno, but more often than not at Newcastle City Hall .

Queen’s last two shows at that iconic Toon venue were in late 1979, before bigger audiences and pay cheques in the USA, South Africa, South America and Europe lured them away.

In the summer of ‘86 - one year after they stole the show at Wembley Stadium in Live Aid - the classic line-up of Mercury, May, Taylor and Deacon rocked out in the North East one last time.

The Chronicle saw fit to publish a special souvenir edition that day, priced 20p, for the sell-out show. Indeed, the ever-discerning Mercury was spotted, feet-up before the performance, reading the Chronicle.

Drummer Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May, meanwhile, happily signed autographs and jackets for fans hanging around the back-stage area.

With the St James’ Park gates opening at 3pm on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon, £13 tickets were being briskly re-sold by touts for £25.

It was Status Quo who warmed up the crowd nicely, with the other support act - Aussie rockers INXS - getting caught up in traffic on the A1 and failing to make the show.

But that was all forgotten when Queen took to the stage, hitting the audience with a stunning opening triple salvo of One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down, and In The Lap Of The Gods

The Chronicle’s long-time rock and pop writer Peter Kinghorn declared: “Freddie used the full, massive width and all levels of the huge stage (it was only half the size of the Wembley stage awaiting them the following weekend) as he pouted, cavorted, twirled and paraded peacock-fashion as he sang.

“His magnetism seemed to fill the arena, matched only by the musical talents of his cohorts – flailing drummer Roger Taylor, nimble-fingered guitarist Brian May and quiet but steady bassist John Deacon.

“Queen’s secret is marrying their visual art and music skills with instantly appealing anthem-like tunes which linger in the mind, whether it is the very early Seven Seas Of Rhye to set off everyone pogoing in rhythm, or the latest Friends Will Be Friends to spark a sea of waving arms and bodies.”

Queen fans at St James' Park, Newcastle, July 9, 1986

Mercury, meanwhile, categorically denied rumours of a group split. “We’re not bad for four tired, old queens,” he quipped to a delirious crowd.

Our reviewer continued: “Along the way there was romance and drama aplenty, from the opening number, through to the likes of Under Pressure, I Want To Break Free, Love Of My Life, Radio Ga Ga and We Will Rock You, to the inevitable We Are The Champions.

“They even took time out for a series of renditions of old rock’n’roll favourites – like Ricky Nelson’s Hello Mary Lou and Little Richard’s Tutti Frutti – before taking up the almost operatic strains of Bohemian Rhapsody.”

And with that, 30 years ago, Queen and Freddie Mercury disappeared into the Tyneside night for the last time.

The tour featured some of the largest venues, biggest crowds, and enthusiastic performances from the band. In 1987, Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS and the band together made the decision to stop touring, making the concert at Knebworth on 9 August 1986 the last time that the four original members of Queen performed on stage together. The Knebworth concert is regarded as the pinnacle of the tour, and is often represented in photography by a frantic swarm of helicopters branded under the 'magic' emblem.

From this tour, Queen have since released Live at Wembley on VHS, Laserdisc, CD and DVD, Live Magic on CD and Live in Budapest on VHS and Laserdisc (later re-released and retitled as Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest on DVD, Blu-ray and Deluxe editions).
