nile cruise recommendations

A Felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat that gives you a truly authentic experience of the Nile. Feluccas are generally very basic will minimal amenities. Meals are typically very basic and in most instances, passengers sleep out on deck under the stars at night.

As you cruise along the Nile, you will be able to admire the picturesque views of the banks and the villages that line the river. The best way to experience the Nile and its many ancient wonders is by way of a Nile River cruise, and a private cruise takes this to a whole new level.

Feluccas may not have much in the way of amenities, but they offer a truly authentic Egyptian experience. They are also the most affordable experience for people who want to enjoy private Nile River cruises.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable and very affordable way to experience the charm of Egypt, a cruise on a felucca is the perfect option for you.

Private Dahabiya Yachts

river cruises nile

For a lot of travelers, a Felucca cruise is just too “bare bones”, and for them, a private Nile River cruise on a Dahabiya yacht would be ideal. A Dahabiya (or Dahabeah) is a traditional Egyptian river yacht. They are far smaller than the large passenger boats and typically only have from 8 to 12 cabins.

Most tourist Dahabiyas have a full-time crew and a resident chef, making them the perfect option for those looking for a more luxurious experience with a healthy dose of privacy. Exploring the ancient wonders of Upper Egypt by way of a Dahabiya yacht  really is a magical experience.

Because of their relatively small size, you can book the entire boat for yourself, or for you, your family or friends. Most Dahabiya cruise operators are willing to set sail as long as a minimum of four berths have been booked.

Tourist Dahabiyas are typically equipped with several modern amenities, but not the same amenities you would find on the large Nile cruise ships. For example, don’t expect a large swimming pool, a gym, health and spa facilities, and etc.

A private Nile River cruise on a Dahabiya is the perfect way to experience the rich heritage of Upper Egypt in style. While cruising along the Nile with only the sound of the wind in the sails, you can take in the spectacular sights of ancient temples, lush agricultural terraces and small villages, all from the sanctuary of your own private boat.

Dahabiyas vessels provide a perfect mix of luxury, adventure, and cultural exploration for a truly special holiday experience. They are not your cheapest option, but you can be sure that lifelong memories will be guaranteed.

FAQ: Private Nile River Cruises

What types of private river cruises are available.

When it comes to private Nile cruises, there are so many options to choose from! Whether you’re looking for a traditional, luxury cruise, or something with a more modern twist, there are plenty of options. Traditional Felucca and Dahabiya cruises usually include a captain and crew who will take you along a set route. Some private cruises will also allow you to customize your itinerary, so you can really make it your own. No matter what kind of experience you’re looking for, there’s sure to be a perfect private cruise option for you.

What amenities do private cruises offer?

On a tourist Dahabiya, you will find a range of amenities designed to make your journey as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. These include things like a Jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor bar, Wi-Fi, comfortably air-conditioned cabins, and more. However, felucca boats generally have almost no amenities at all due to their small size.

How long are the private Nile River cruises?

Private Nile River cruises typically last for around 4 to 7 nights, depending on the itinerary you choose. That said, there are some cruises that offer options for longer or shorter durations. Generally, the cruises begin in Luxor and end in Aswan or begin in Aswan and end in Luxor. It’s best to do some research before selecting a cruise to ensure you get the right duration and itinerary for your needs.

What is the best time of year to take a private Nile River cruise?

The best time to take a private cruise on the Nile is during the spring and fall months, typically from March to May and September to November. These months boast pleasant temperatures, beautiful sun-filled days, and clear skies. During these months, the river is also at its most beautiful with lush foliage, and the weather is ideal for a relaxing cruise. Cruising the Nile during the summer months can be quite hot and humid, while winter can be cold and sometimes wet as well.

Is it safe to swim in the river during a cruise?

Swimming in the Nile River is generally discouraged due to the presence of crocodiles and the risk of exposure to bacteria and other infections. However, there are some organized swimming excursions available for those who wish to take a dip in the river. These swimming excursions are usually offered by qualified tour operators and include an element of safety.

What people love about Nile Cruises from Cairo

This tour was amazing. The boat and the food were top notch. During transfers and train boarding there is always somebody to help you. Also our guide Osama was so entertaining and knowledgeable, as je would say he’s really the best guide in Egypt.
Holiday in Egypt is quite a good agency, taking care of all the tourist requests and it felt the whole time completely comfortable and honest with the agency and our tour guide Hasan, who also did an awesome job. We had the situation that our taxi driver didn't come to the pick up time in cairo for the airport transfers, informing the agency via a whatsapp call at 5am in the morning was enough and they quickly organized a new driver - later it turned out the first driver had an emergency. Compared to other tours this might be a little bit more expensive, but in general you choose quality and don't have to think about anything. I completely recommend the tour and the experience and also recommend Hasan our guide who was funny, took time to explain everything in an understandable and memorizable way and contributed the this enjoyable stay.

His extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject matter transformed each excursion into a journey through time, bringing ancient Egypt to life before our eyes. Anas´ meticulous attention to detail ensured that every aspect of our trip was seamless and enjoyable. Whether we were exploring the awe-inspiring temples of Luxor and Karnak, or marvelling at the grandeur of the Valley of the Kings, Anas provided invaluable insights that enriched our understanding of Egypt's rich heritage. Beyond his expertise in Egyptology, Anas´ professionalism and responsiveness truly set him apart. From coordinating logistics to offering personalised recommendations, he went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was exceptional. In conclusion, I cannot recommend Anas highly enough as a tour guide for anyone planning a Nile cruise in Egypt. His passion, expertise, and genuine hospitality transformed our trip into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you, Anas, for an unforgettable journey through the timeless wonders of Egypt.

ENJOY EGYPT’S AMAZING SCENERY ABOARD NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO TO LUXOR AND ASWAN

Nile Cruises from Cairo

For many years, Nile cruises from Cairo south towards Luxor were non-existent, but in 2015, they began again and are among the most popular trips booked by travelers from all over the world. Known as the “long cruise”, it is one of the few ways to take in some of the most notable sites from the Ancient Egyptian past in style and comfort. Actually, every day of a Nile cruise includes a major site, or two (or three!).

In fact, one travel expert in the region said this of the Nile cruises from Cairo, “The sites of the reopened section are smaller, quieter and more personalized and would be otherwise almost impossible to reach.

They include Tuna el-Gebel (the necropolis of the city of Hermopolis, sacred to Hermes), the former capital Tel el Amarna (built by pharaoh Akhenaten), Beni Hassan, Abydos and Denderah…As well as being chock-full of factual detail [cruise] tours thankfully allowed for time to absorb the sites and scenes.”

And because most Nile cruises from Cairo include at least one onboard expert (whether an Egyptologist, archaeologist, historian, and so on) offering lectures and guided tours, your experience is much richer. Additionally, even larger vessels contain relatively small groups, ensuring flexibility and far more attention from the crew and the staff.

THE SENSORY APPEAL OF NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

nile cruises from cairo to luxor

Yet, there is also much to be said about the experience of sailing up the famed river and experiencing the landscape in such a direct way. It is really only Nile cruises from Cairo that allow you to hear the sounds of farmers singing to their cattle, kids splashing around at the shore, and the magical tunes of songbirds all along the journey. Wake before sunrise to see the whole world change or dazzle at the twinkling stars overhead as you dine or lounge on the upper deck of your ship.

Naturally, it is the sites you visit that make the cruise such a must for those who want to get the very most out of a visit to Egypt. Most of the cruises are meant to take you from or to Cairo and will be at least ten days or more. Some head downriver from Aswan and all of the way to Cairo, while some take a reverse route and head upriver from Cairo and to Luxor and Aswan. For those who wish to see Abu Simbel and the many Nubian sites preserved along the shores of Lake Nasser, a cruise can be added to the journey before or after the Nile cruise ends.

The long cruise to or from Cairo does include those lesser-known but essential sites that are such significant areas from the Ancient Egyptian past. If you begin at Cairo, your journey is likely to include a day or two of guided touring around the city. This will mean a visit to the Giza Plateau and such appealing spots in Cairo as the Egyptian Museum, the Khan el Khalili marketplace, and more. Once on board and sailing, a visit is likely to feature stops at:

  • Beni Suef  – The base from which you can pay a visit to the stunning pyramids at Maydoum and Dahshur. This includes the Red and Black pyramids, the oldest structures using the pyramid form.
  • Minya  – Close to Tuna el-Gebel, the boundary of Akhenaten’s famed city and the border area between Upper and Lower Egypt at Ashmunein. The tombs of the pharaoh and other royals are in this area, as well.
  • Tell el Amarna  – The actual capital during Akhenaten’s rule. He removed it from Luxor and established his unique period of worshipping a single god – the Aten – from here. Upon his death, it was abandoned and even partially destroyed. Yet tombs and some outlining structures of the great city remain.
  • Abydos  – The oldest city of Ancient Egypt is here and some of the art is still stunning to behold. Sites such as Sohag and El Balyana are also nearby and often featured in a day trip to the area.
  • Quena  – This is a not-to-be missed stop on Nile cruises from Cairo as it is home to the amazing Dendara Temple. Completed late in the Pharaonic era, it is thought to be one of the finest and most well-preserved temples remaining. It is also home to the much-debated relief known as the Dendara Light.

After that, you reach Luxor and spend days exploring sites such as the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and Deir el Bahri. There are also the East and West Banks of the river with its own array of famous temples (including the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes) and so much more. This area is also home to sites like the temples at Edfu and the dual temple of Kom Ombo. If heading to Aswan, sites such as Philae, the High Dam and so much more await.

Ranging in length from ten days to two weeks (or more), Nile cruises from Cairo encapsulate the magic that most envision the moment the words “Nile cruise” are spoken.

THE OPTIONS FOR NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

Unlike cruises from Luxor and southward towards Aswan, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are on the more modern, luxury cruisers. Felucca and dahabiyah journeys don’t usually appear among the options, yet this does not mean a five-star journey is unavailable. In fact, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are like premium hotels with fine food, beautiful accommodations, attentive service, and even options for spa or salon services, evening parties and events, entertainment and more.

Additionally, many Nile cruises from Cairo are all-inclusive, meaning that ground transport, entrance fees, and all but your pre-arrival and post-departure costs are included in your booking.

Setting sail to or from Cairo is a treat as it is one of the few ways to reach, enjoy and explore some of the most astonishing sites in Egyptian history. The first pyramids, the oldest cities and the most dazzling sights await you, making it an ideal time to book your Nile cruise from Cairo right away.

A Private Nile Cruise - Giza

Day 1 - 2 - London - Cairo

Upon arrival you will be met by a representative and driven to the hotel overlooking the Nile in the Giza Quarter of Cairo. A private guide will accompany you for the day and show you the many sites of the ancient city of Cairo.  Begin with a visit to Sakkara, one of the earliest burial grounds for the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built for the King of the Third Dynasty, is found. In the afternoon explore the ancient Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Afterwards, you have the option of visiting the funerary boat of Kufu, considered one of the world’s great archaeological artefacts.

Day 3 - 6 - Cairo - Luxor

You will have the morning to further explore Cairo, accompanied again by your guide.  Perhaps visit the astonishing Egyptian Museum or the bustling Khalil Bazaar where you can find delicious eateries and a whole host of wares from skilled local craftsmen.  In the afternoon, you will take the short flight to Luxor. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.  The next morning you will set out with your private guide to the famous Valley of Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and explore these ancient relics. Walk amongst these awe-inspiring edifices and marvel at how they were constructed by human hands all those centuries ago. Continue onto the Tombs of the Nobles and Hatshepsut’s Temple, where you will learn all about these historically significant sites.

Day 7 - 11 - Nile Cruise

This morning, you will be transferred to your private dahabaya boat where you will spend the rest of the day sailing down the Nile to Awan. The dahabaya is a replica of the boats that the grand tourists of the 19th century sailed on the Nile.  Cruising by the power of wind and using a small tug boat when wind is low, this journey is peaceful and serene.  Spend the days relaxing, hopping on and off at sites or just to go on walks.  At night listen to the sounds of life around you, or perhaps take a dip in the hot-tub watching the Egyptian night sky.  Enjoy the peaceful cruise passing by Luxor’s countryside and daily life along the banks. Spend the next five nights on the dahabaya stopping at ancient sites and small rural villages.

Day 12 - 13 - Aswan - Cairo - London

Have a leisurely morning on the dahabaya or wander into Aswan. Transfer to Aswan Airport in time for your short flight to Cairo where you will have one night before the direct flight to London.

When planning your trip to Egypt, timing is crucial. The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months, from October to April, when temperatures are milder and more comfortable for sightseeing. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
  • Peak season brings more tourists, but if that’s your only option, be prepared for the crowds.
  • Summer months in Egypt can be scorching hot, so consider that if you’re particularly heat sensitive.

When planning your trip to Egypt, consider attending major festivals like Ramadan or national holidays, which can impact opening hours and crowd levels at popular attractions.

Before embarking on your Egyptian adventure, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and travel costs. Check the visa requirements for your nationality well in advance. Many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egyptian airports, but it’s best to confirm and be prepared. The visa fee is generally around $25 USD.

As for the trip to Egypt cost is relatively affordable compared to other popular destinations. You can expect to spend around $50-$100 per day for a mid-range traveler, including accommodation, food, transportation, and entry fees to major attractions. Here’s a rough estimate of some common expenses:

  • Airfare: $500-$1,000 roundtrip from major U.S. cities
  • Mid-range hotel: $50-$100 per night

Eating at local street food stalls and local eateries is incredibly affordable, and you’ll find delicious meals for just a few dollars. When exploring attractions, transportation like local buses and taxis is budget-friendly. Consider a Nile Cruise package for an all-inclusive experience.

Planning a trip to Egypt can raise a lot of questions, so we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your journey.

Egypt is generally safe for tourists, especially when traveling with a reputable tour company or guide. However, it’s always important to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and follow the advice of local authorities.

For long-distance travel, consider taking domestic flights or booking a Nile River cruise. Within cities, taxis and public transportation are affordable and convenient options. Hiring a private driver or tour guide can also make navigating Egypt more comfortable.

While it’s possible to explore some sites independently, booking guided tours in advance can provide invaluable insights and ensure a smoother experience. Guided tours are highly recommended for complex sites like the pyramids, Valley of the Kings, and ancient temples.

It’s important to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or Islamic mosques. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Women may also want to carry a scarf to cover their heads when entering mosques.

No specific vaccinations are required for most travelers, but it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip. Ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider getting vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Bringing insect repellent and staying hydrated are also recommended.

Yes, most nationalities require a visa to visit Egypt. However, the process is relatively straightforward, and there are a couple of ways to obtain one:

Visa on Arrival: Citizens of many countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Egypt’s international airports. The process involves filling out a form, paying a fee (typically around $25 USD, payable in cash), and having a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

E-Visa: For added convenience, many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa in advance through the official Egyptian government portal ([invalid URL removed]). The process is entirely online and typically takes a few days for approval.

Important Notes:

Specific Requirements:  Always double-check the visa requirements for your specific nationality, as there may be variations. Some countries may have additional requirements or longer processing times.

Visa Validity:  The most common tourist visa for Egypt is valid for 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, consider applying for a multiple-entry visa or inquire about visa extensions upon arrival.

Resources:  For official visa information and updates, visit the Egyptian government website or consult your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate.
