New Zealand Itinerary

new zealand tours for young adults

Welcome to New Zealand!

We recommend booking pre-trip accommodations if you'd like to fully immerse yourself in the quirky city of Christchurch.

Morning/afternoon

  • Meet at Christchurch International Airport (CHC) at 1:00 p.m local time where your adventure will begin!
  • Take included transportation to your accommodation in the heart of Christchurch.
  • Get settled in as you get to know your new friends.
  • Go on a guided food tour through Christchurch with a local Māori to discover Māori cuisine.
  • Hang out with your new friends and get to know one another before settling into your Christchurch accommodations.

TranzAlpine Train Journey

  • Enjoy an early morning breakfast together as a group.
  • Depart on a cross-country TranzAlpine Journey, which has been dubbed one of the world’s greatest train journeys.
  • Experience stunning sights of the South Island that can only be seen by train.
  • Cross through miles of untouched New Zealand beauty as you pass ice-fed rivers, the Southern Alps, and forest as far as the eye can see.
  • The trip will take just under 5 hours covering 139 miles. You’ll be on a modern train with all the amenities you need. It is truly the journey of a lifetime.
  • From the Wild West Coast of the country, travel south along the coast where you’ll take a scenic hike through New Zealand’s rainforest and explore this rugged and beautiful part of the country. ( ~2 hours drive )
  • Continue traveling south toward your final destination--Franz Josef.
  • Arrive in Franz Josef, in the heart of glacier country, where you’ll call home for the next two nights.
  • Have an included dinner at a local restaurant in town hand-picked by people who know this area best.

Experience Glacier Country

  • Wake-up early and explore Franz Josef, where there are tons of amazing optional activities to choose from.
  • Your Trip Leader can help you organize an optional “Heli-Hike” where you helicopter to the glacier and get to spend a few hours up there. ( weather dependent )
  • If that doesn’t sound fun, you’re free to jump out of a plane, go quad biking, or kayak through Franz Josef’s glacier country. It’s your day!
  • Reconvene with your group for a late lunch together.
  • After lunch, take a hike through the awe-inspiring Franz Josef Glacier Valley. Please note that this walk takes to you to the end of a track where you will be able to see the glacier from a few hundred meters away. Due to safety you cannot reach the ice unless you do so by helicopter so make sure to let your Trip Leader know if you would like to do the Heli-Hike.
  • After a full day of adventuring, have time to relax at your accommodation before dinner.
  • You are free to have dinner tonight at our rainforest accommodations or in town (not included).

Glamping in Wanaka

  • Breakfast has been delivered to your room the night before as you’ll leave early for a scenic drive toward the lakeside town of Wanaka.
  • Prepare for one of the most scenic drives of the trip as you make stops to visit stunning lakes, waterfalls, and beaches along New Zealand’s rugged west coast.
  • Stop off at Lake Matheson near Fox Glacier and take a short walk leading you to the lake where you’ll be greeted with views of Mount Cook in the distance, New Zealand's tallest mountain.
  • Today, we’ll take full advantage of our local guide’s knowledge as they pick out the best secret spots to take us to.
  • You’ll arrive in Wanaka in the afternoon where you’ll refuel with a delicious lunch in the town center.
  • After lunch, you’ll explore the picture-perfect town, its namesake lake, and #thatwankatree.
  • Check into your glamping accommodations on a lake located amongst beautiful natural landscapes.
  • Enjoy a peaceful night away from the crowds with views that few have the opportunity to experience.
  • Lastly, have a DIY BBQ under the incredible night sky as you stargaze.

Rob Roy Glacier Track

  • Have an early morning breakfast on the farm before heading to the Rob Roy Glacier Track, one of the best hikes New Zealand has to offer.
  • Arrive in Mount Aspiring National Park (~1 hour drive) and begin the spectacular, yet challenging hike (~5 hours and 10 km) through mountains, river valleys, alpine lakes, and active glaciers.
  • Refuel with a hearty lunch after your active morning.
  • If you still have energy after the hike, ask your Trip Leader for recommendations of optional activities: kayaking, skydiving, etc.
  • Relax in your hotel located on the outskirts of Wanaka.
  • After some well-earned rest, grab an included dinner with your group in the center of town.
  • Cap off an amazing day with a drink next to Lake Wanaka.

Via Ferrata Waterfall Climb

  • Today, participate in a climbing activity you'll be sure to remember for the rest of your life.
  • Prepare to scale a waterfall with a world-class Via Ferrata that will surely get your adrenaline pumping.
  • Climb the heart of the waterfall, discover hidden pools, and cross suspension bridges hundreds of feet above the ground. Soak in some incredible views of the Wanaka region you won't be able to find anywhere else. (No climbing experience necessary)
  • After an adrenaline packed morning, grab lunch in the center of town.
  • Take the rest of the day to discover Wanaka's boutique museums, shops, and art galleries.
  • Dinner is on your own tonight so feel free to check out the several delicious eateries that Wanaka has to offer (not included).

Arrowtown & Queenstown

  • After breakfast in Wanaka, say goodbye to the wonderful little mountain town as you continue your journey toward Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand.
  • On the way, stop at the famous Cardrona hotel and the quirky Arrowtown. You’ll be enchanted by these historic New Zealand treasures and gold rush icons.
  • Grab lunch in Arrowtown and discover the little gems that this town has to offer.
  • Visit Kawarau Bridge where the bravest in your group can take a leap off the World's First Bungee Jump.
  • Arrive in Queenstown in the evening and check into your accommodations located just steps from the city center.
  • Take in the sights and sounds of Queenstown before having an included group dinner at one of the most delicious restaurants in town.

Mountain Bike Queenstown

  • Enjoy a delicious breakfast steps away from your hotel at a local cafe.
  • Depart for a guided biking adventure taking you from Queenstown city center, through the Queenstown gardens, and around Lake Wakatipu, before ending at beautiful Jack’s Point.
  • This a laid-back bike ride on a mostly flat trail. The bikes also come with an electronic pedal assist option to get up those pesky hills even quicker. It's accessible for anyone who is up to the challenge!
  • Soak in the views from your mountain bike as you stand beneath the jaw-dropping Remarkables Mountain Range and learn about the European and Maori cultural influence of the area from your local guide.
  • Arrive back in Queenstown in the afternoon and take advantage of the rest of the day with selected optional activities.
  • Take a leap of faith off a bridge, go skydiving, or take an exhilarating jet-boat ride through Skippers Canyon.
  • If you prefer less adrenaline in the afternoon, hike Bob’s Peak or play a game at Frisbee Park.
  • After a full day of adventure, enjoy a final included dinner with your group where you can humbly brag about your day's adventure.
  • Reflect about your time in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
  • After dinner, enjoy Queenstown’s famed nightlife for a last night out with your Under30Experiences family.

Goodbye New Zealand

  • Have a final breakfast with your group before you fly back home. Don't forget to grab a few souvenirs to remember this incredible adventure. For those staying later, we recommend taking an iconic day trip to Milford Sound where you’ll have a very early morning departure before making your way into the Fiordland National Park ‍
  • Airport transfers are included for your flight departing at anytime today.

U30X is such an amazing travel community. Once your trip is over, the experience is not. They keep in touch with their alumni & provide platforms for travel questions, personal development, & community connections in your own backyard! If you're a young person looking to travel I highly recommend U30X!

facebook review

There are not enough ways for me to describe how amazing this company is. After my first trip I always told people, it wasn't about the location, but the experience that u30x gave me. I have some of the best experiences of my life with u30x, and now a passion for travel. Also, their alumni community and groups are awesome too!

google review

Traveling with U30X has been life changing for me. I've made lifelong friends with both travelers and staff. I can't come up with enough good things to say about the company, the people, and the experiences I've had!

Just returned from my second trip with Under30Experiences. My first trip was to the Costa Rica rainforest. My most recent trip was to Iceland. Both trips were such an amazing experience. I loved learning about Iceland and its origins. I enjoy the small groups and I made some great new friends! Recommend them for anyone wanting to travel alone or with a couple of friends.

I was so scared to travel abroad alone and then I came across their website and they made international travel so easy! And the people I’ve met on the trips are some amazing individuals! I’ve done 6 of their trips and plan on continuing to do even more!!

My Hike the Inca Trail trip was beyond amazing, and I couldn't have asked for anything more from a trip. Our leaders made us all feel instantly comfortable, and the group was fantastic. The trip was well planned and the hike was unforgettable. Memories to last a lifetime.

Explore New Zealand on a Flying Kiwi tour

I feel really bad as I went on this trip a few years ago however, since the pandemic, I've seen images of NZ and it reminded me of my amazing experience. I really can't praise Flying Kiwi highly enough. Everyone from the staff who helped me with my online booking to everyone throughout the 3 week trip. You really feel like a family, everyone is so nice and welcoming. I have too many highlights to mention. NZ is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever visited. When we are past the Covid-19 pandemic please book a place and go. You won't regret it.

Itineraries

Starting from Christchurch, we will take you on an adrenalin fueled South Island experience that is bursting with optional activities to get your blood pumping. We include two days in Queenstown to maximise the rush. It all starts at 8am at Haka Lodge Christchurch and ends around 5pm in Wellington.

We'll shout you a ride on the Queenstown Gondola, as well as a few surprise stops along the way.

As you build your tour online, you will see many optional activities available to add - but remember, none of these are compulsory. Not sure which activities to choose? No problem. Once you've paid a deposit and secured your seat you can add activities anytime until 30 days prior to departure.

Activities can also be purchased on the road - just let your tour guide know; he'll be happy to help. However, we can't always guarantee availability when booking on the road, so we suggest if there are any activities you definitely want to do, pre-book them.

As the tour starts early in the morning, you can opt to stay at Haka Lodge Christchurch the night before the tour - only having to walk downstairs on the day the tour starts makes for a stress free morning. Likewise, you can book an extra night at the Wellington YHA so you are not in a rush once we go our separate ways. We also offer the option of one-day bus transportation to Auckland, leaving the morning after the tour ends.

Upgrading your accommodation to a two person private room costs $829. The cost is per room, so if you share the room with someone else you can split the cost between you.

Day by Day Itinerary

Fly north to the beautiful bay of islands.

The sub-tropical region of the Bay of Islands is a stunning Maritime Park with 144 islands, secluded bays, and an abundance of marine life including marlin, whales, penguins, dolphins, gannets and many other species. Being somewhat sheltered, the area is ideal for yachting, fishing, kayaking and diving. Rolling countryside, tidal estuaries, mangroves, sparkling and long silvery beaches abound. It is an area of considerable historical significance, and is the place where Maori and European signed the Treaty of Waitangi that joined them as one nation. Long considered the cradle of Polynesian and European settlement in New Zealand, the area is rich in history and natural beauty.

After arriving at Kerikeri Airport we will transfer you to your hotel and the rest of the day is free to explore.

Accommodation Paihia - 1 Night

Raglan (Little Hawaii) For Some Bohemian Tranquility

The ruggedly beautiful West Coast is where the mighty surf of the Tasman Sea tumbles and crashes onto vast black sandy beaches. The untamed natural beauty you’ll find here nourishes the soul; isolated and wild, you’ll feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Famous for surfing, music, artisans, cafés and bohemian lifestyle’s, the Raglan community is set on the beautiful west coast. This is a relaxing isolated place where you can spend time at one of the many beaches swimming, surfing, kayaking and body-boarding.  Raglan is home to one of the best left-hand breaks in the world and is the perfect place to sit on the beach, eat fresh fish & watch the sun go down. Approximate Distance:   381 kms | 237 miles   Total Driving Time: 5 hours 20 mins Accommodation Raglan - 2 nights

Sunset in Raglan.

Surf, Learn to Surf or Relax on the Beach

Whether you want to learn surf or you have already master the sport, Raglan is definitely the place for you to come and enjoy surfing. Learn all techniques thanks to an innovative system of dry land surf board model that allow you to experience surfboard dynamics prior to entering the water. Whether in a group or individual lessons, the emphasis is put on fun and safety for a pleasurable and safe ocean experience. In just a few lessons, you can be taken from riding the whitewater to gliding along open faced ground swells!

If you're not a surfing fan then Ocean Beach is a fine place for a swim or a body boarding session. Lifeguards patrol the western end of the beach during the summer months - it's safest to swim between the flags.

Après-beach... And after beach time, the area offers plenty of possibilities, like a zipper line “Flying Fox”, hiking trails on Mt Karioi, mountain biking or glowworm caves or sip a great espresso. This lively surf town has an interesting creative culture and a wonderful choice of cafés and arts and craft boutiques.

Lost World Epic Caving Adventure - Waitomo

We consider this to be Waitomo’s best caving adventure and it’s dramatic! You start with a 100 meter abseil (330ft) into the depths of the ‘Lost World’ – this is considered the world’s longest commercial caving abseil (rappel) and it takes some fifteen minutes to get you down – and that is just the beginning! In the company of a very experienced guide, you start your journey.

Once down, you embark on a journey back to the surface through one of the worlds most incredible cave systems. Climbing upstream you follow a challenging underground river by whatever means, so its: swimming, climbing ropes, wading, exploring vaults the size of cathedrals, up waterfalls and monolithic stalactites, squeezing through tight cracks and jumping into deep black pools!

This is a full on caving experience and you need to be fit and you are going to get very very wet, but fear not you’ll be in the safe muddy hands of some of New Zealand’s most experienced guides. (minimum age is 15 for the Lost World)

Not quite your cup of tea: We have   a great selection of alternative caving adventure's from sedate glowworm viewing, black water rafting (floating on an inner tube through a cave) Just ask about our selection of beginner to moderate underground adventures. Approximate Distance: 102 kms | 63 miles    Total Driving Time: 1 hour 20 mins Accommodation Waitomo - 1 night

Waitomo Lost World

These Wilderness Cottages were built to capture the unique beauty of its surroundings. This farm is a fantastic example of what Waitomo is renowned for: subterranean caves with glowworms, rough limestone out-crops, lush green fields and friendly people. There are a number of walking tracks through our native bush. There are also a number of rock climbing areas which are mapped out for those interested.

Rotorua Rafting & Natural Hot Pools

The great thing about the Kaituna River is that it is not only one of the most popular whitewater runs in the country, with the distinction of being the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall, but it is also very scenic and takes you through the depths of a magnificent bush-lined gorge steeped in Maori history. The exhilarating seven metre drop of whitewater is the ultimate rafting experience in New Zealand! The Kaituna is classified as a grade five river because of its seven metre waterfall, however it is suitable for all people who are reasonably comfortable in water.

Too scary?  We have various rafting options available from Grade 2 to 5

Spend your afternoon soaking in Rotorua's  Polynesian Spa . Very relaxing thermal hot pools with onsite massage therapies.

Approximate Distance: 137 kms | 85 miles   Total Driving Time: 1 hour 50 mins

Accommodation Rotorua - 1 night

Rafting in Rotorua.

Geothermal Rotorua / Queenstown

Wai-O-tapu Thermal Wonderland Just south of Rotorua lies Wai-O-tapu, a wonderland of stunning geothermal activity and a really exciting place to visit. Wai-O-Tapu means 'Sacred Water' and it is easy to see why as the hot pools range in colour from turquoise blue, rich green and gold to an almost olive/yellow, make the water a dazzling kaleidoscope of natural colour.

The steaming vents with New Zealand’s largest bubbling mud pool while being surrounded by huge volcanic craters make the experience very other worldly - but wait, there is more... the Highlight is the Lady Knox Geyser that spectacularly erupts daily at around 10.15am (ish)

Alternate excursions in and around Rotorua:

Geysers at Rotorua.

Free Day in the Adventure Capital

It is well known  Queenstown is New Zealand’s ‘four season’ resort town and arguably the adventure capital of the world. There are certainly enough crazy activities here to challenge the teens – Sure jump off a bridge, try skydiving or roar down a river in a jet boat, but Queenstown offers much more as you can just as easily go fishing, golfing, gold panning, wine tasting, or boating. One thing is certain your family won't run out of things to do.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise

When the last day-boat ties up in early evening and the visitor’s leave a silence descends... An overnight cruise amidst the spectacular Milford Sound is a "once in a lifetime" experience and certainly one the most beautiful places in New Zealand. It's no wonder it was described by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world'.

Cruise the full length of Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea before anchoring for the night in the sheltered Harrison Cove. Then it’s of exploring with the nature guide in the ships tender crafts and kayaks spotting the resident seals, dolphins and penguins, before enjoying a delicious evening buffet meal in the spacious dining saloon, before retiring to your cabin.

Approximate Distance:   289 kms | 180 miles   Total Driving Time:   4 hours  Accommodation Milford Sound Cruise - 1 night

Milford Sound Cruise

Penquins, Seals & Dolphins

Dolphins such as Dusky, Bottlenose and Hectors are regularly seen swimming in Milford Sound , while lay about on the rocky shoreline enjoying the sun are the inquisitive New Zealand Fur Seals. Penguins are numerous throughout the fiords. Two species predominate, especially the rare yellow-eyebrowed Fiord-land crested penguin and the Little Blue Penguin.

Once back on land its time to return to Queenstown. Approximate Distance:  289 kms | 180 miles   Total Driving Time:   4 hours  Accommodation Queenstown - 3 nights

Shotover Jet

The Shotover Jet is another adrenaline thrill you'll never forget. From the moment the accelerator hits the floor, your adrenaline hits the roof as you power through the Shotover River and deep into the Shotover River canyons! It's an amazing ride, as the Shotover Canyon walls tower over you, and your driver skilfully whips the boat past rocky outcrops, and skims around crags and boulders.

Shotover Jet

The Iconic Bungy Jump

Celebrate the end of your tour with a Bungy jump from the Kawarau Bridge.

Take the leap of a lifetime off the100 year old Kawarau suspension bridge. Kawarau Bridge was the first full-time bungy jump site in the world and is the place where adventure tourism began in New Zealand. The bridge platform is 43 metres above the Kawarau River and the jumper has the option of a head and shoulders splashdown in the river if you feel like cooling off.

Reviews of new zealand family tours.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.
Isobel was an outstanding tour guide, full of amazing and interesting information, funny, down to earth, a wonderful story teller, competent, organised, nice to everyone. We've done two other Trafalgar bus tours and she has been our favourite tour guide. Darrell was a superb bus driver, always calm, navigating different terrains and weather with ease. We felt 100% safe in his competent hands. I liked that so much of the good stuff was included in the tour, e.g. the cruise on Milford Sound, and the wonderful ferry ride and dinner on the farm in Queenstown. It was fast paced, but we did cover an incredible amount in 8 days.
Everything was great with the except of the hotel accommodations in Wellington and Christchurch. The mattresses were absolutely awful. The beds were very springy and offered zero support. Woke up very sore each morning in those cities. Other than that, very very satisfied with Tour Radar.
