Fatahillah Museum, Historical Landmark to Learn Everything About Jakarta's Past

The Jakarta History Museum (also known as Fatahillah Museum) is housed in the former City Hall located in the old part of the city now known as Jakarta Kota, few hundred meters behind the port and warehouses of Sunda Kelapa. Originally called the Stadhuis, this building was the administrative headquarters of the Dutch East India Company, and later of the Dutch Government.

Built in 1710 by Governor General van Riebeeck, this solid building hides below it notorious dungeons and filthy water prisons. Today, this museum displays the history of Jakarta from prehistoric days to the founding of the town of Jayakarta. The collection includes a replica of the Tugu Inscription that dates back to the 5th century under the reign of the great King Purnawarman, evidence that the center of the Tarumanegara kingdom was located around the present day seaport of Tanjung Priok. his collection reflects the influences of various cultural elements on the City of Batavia, namely from Europe, especially from the Netherlands, from China and India as well as from Indonesia itself.

To bring more life and activities to the Old Batavia square, today the Jakarta Government has organized regular attractions involving local communities and their cultures. On Sundays, shows are performed presenting the Zapin dance, a combination of Betawi and Middle Eastern influences, the Barongsai Chinese lion dance, the Portuguese influenced keroncong music, the typical Betawi Tanjidor music, batik fashion shows, vintage cars parades, food and souvenirs and fireworks.

The address of the Museum is:  Jakarta History Museum  Jalan Taman Fatahillah No 1 West Jakarta Phone: (62 21) 692-9101/690-1483  Fax. (62 21) 690-2387

To get there, you can use the TransJakarta bus going to Kota from Blok-M (Corridor 1). Stop at the last terminal, Kota. It'll be a couple of blocks away to the museum.

A virtual tour of Jakarta, the big melting pot of cultures

A virtual tour takes tourists to Jakarta’s landmarks safely from the comfort of their own homes during the pandemic.

The tour, dubbed Wisata Keliling Jakarta (Jakarta Touring), took place from June 22 to 28 as a part of the capital’s anniversary celebrations and it was organized by tourism tech company Atourin, the Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Tour Guide Association (HPI) and tour operator Wisata Kreatif Jakarta.

On the last day, the tour took visitors to Jakarta landmarks influenced by foreign cultures.

Tour guide Ira Lathief dressed in traditional Betawi clothing and took the participants on tour with Google maps along with slides featuring pictures and videos she had taken herself.

She explained that Jakarta was a melting pot of many cultures, not only from different parts of Indonesia but also ones that came from abroad.

“People may know the popular Chinatown and Dutchtown [Kota Tua] but aside from those two, there are still more areas in Jakarta that are influenced by foreign culture,” Ira said during the virtual tour via Zoom conference call.

“There is the Portuguese village, Little India, Little Arabia, Little Tokyo and Little Korea,” she added.

The tour started in Kota Tua, a popular area in West Jakarta. The influence on the area dates back to 17 th  century Dutch colonial rule, leaving behind numerous historical gems.

Old Town: Fathahillah Square was once used by the Dutch for public events, including public executions. It is now a communal leisure area.

Kota Tua features Fathahillah Square, which was once used for events, including public executions, but is now a public leisure area where families go around and ride bicycles.

The tour of Kota Tua covered historical sites like dungeons that once held historical figures who opposed the Dutch, such as Javanese Prince Diponegoro and war leader Tjut Nyak Dien, and the Wayang Museum (Puppet Museum),  to culinary spots such as Café Batavia that serves Betawi and Dutch cuisine and beverages.

After Kota Tua, Ira took the tour to the Chinese influenced areas located in West Jakarta. She took participants to historical Chinese homes, as well as iconic coffee and tea houses.

Fusion culture: Ira Lathief, tour guide for Wisata Keliling Jakarta, took the tour to Pantjoran Tea House. A Chinese influenced tea house where communal free tea is served.

On Jl. Gajah Mada, Ira showed participants an old Chinese mansion called  Gedung Candra Naya  (Candra Naya Mansion). The mansion was once the home of Chinese mayor Khow Kim Man, who Ira said was the last person to hold the position in colonial Batavia.

Although the mansion is surrounded by tall, modern buildings, the large Chinese doors, curved roof, red lampions and Chinese calligraphy helps retain the mansion’s historical facade.

Ira then took the tour to the Chinatown of Glodok, West Jakarta, where Chinese cuisine and snacks to herbal medicine and cheap electronics goods can be found. She showed the tour a stall that serves freshly baked pia ,  vegetarian dishes and the legendary coffee house Kopi Es Tak Kie (Tak Kie Ice Coffee).

Colorful: The Liong (dragon) dance is performed during the Cap Go Meh Festival at Pancoran Chinatown Point, in Glodok, West Jakarta, on Feb. 8.

Kopi Es Tak Kie , founded in 1927, is run by a descendent of Chinese wanderer Liong Kwie Tjong .

The tour takes people to lesser-known areas of the city, like the Portuguese influenced Kampung Tugu (Tugu Village).

“People usually come here to visit Tugu Church but there is more than the church,” Ira said.

“We usually set up tours here, especially during celebrations, as the village has its own unique culture and celebrations.”

According to Ira, the village was built by former Portuguese prisoners who were taken by the Dutch to Batavia from Malacca. They were given freedom in exchange for converting to Christianity.

Built 359 years ago, the people of Tugu identify themselves as ethnic Betawi.

“Kampung Tugu is also where the  kroncong  style music originated from. It was born from the Portuguese’s love for music and celebrations,” Ira said.

After visiting Tugu, Ira took the tour to Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, where a community of ethnic Indians and immigrants influenced the area, building what Ira called Little India.

While Pasar Baru is influenced by both the Indians and Chinese, the majority of the stalls there sell Indian textiles owned by ethnic Indians.

There also stands a Sikh temple for people worship. Sikhism originated from the Punjab region of India in the 15 th century.

Ira then took the tour to Cikini, Central Jakarta where Little Arabia is located. The area was influenced by Arab travelers and tourists that would stay in Jakarta for long periods of time.

“Arab tourists and travelers would stay in Jakarta for at least one month,” Ira said. “Instead of hotels, they would rent apartments, that is why Little Arabia is located in the apartment-filled areas like Rasuna Said and Cikini.”

One of the notable landmarks of the area is the mansion of Raden Saleh. After living in Europe for 20 years, the painter returned to Jakarta and built a mansion in the area in 1852.

In South Jakarta, Ira introduced the tour to Little Korea and Little Tokyo.

Little Korea is located in Senopati, where there are several authentic Korean restaurants along with Korean grocery stores owned by expatriates.

Little Tokyo is located in Melawai. Not only is the area filled with authentic Japanese restaurants, the aesthetics of the buildings also resemble that found in Tokyo.

“The influence on the area started with Japanese grocery stores that were owned by expatriates,” she said.

“Every May, except for this year, they hold a Japanese-style festival in the area.”

The total duration of the tour was two hours, ending in Little Tokyo. Participants get to have a short discussion session after the tour.

Ira specifically told participants from Jakarta and its surrounding areas to never forget where they are from, even when they move or travel far away.

Nadya, a Jakarta native currently in Bali, participated in the event throughout the whole week.

“I’m very happy to have participated. I live in Jakarta but I am stuck in Bali and through this virtual tour I was able to relieve my longing for Jakarta,” she said at the end of tour.

The writer is an intern at The Jakarta Post.

National Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta

History of tourism.

The National Museum of Indonesia, commonly known as the Elephant Building after the bronze elephant statue in its forecourt, has played a pivotal role in the development of tourism in Jakarta and Indonesia at large. Since its establishment in 1778 during the Dutch colonial period, it has become a cultural centerpiece, showcasing Indonesia's rich heritage through an extensive collection of artifacts, relics, and historical pieces.

Indonesia's tourism history began to flourish in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Dutch East Indies government starting to promote the archipelago's exotic attractions. The museum's growing collection became a focal point for those keen on learning about the archipelago's diverse cultures and history. After Indonesia's independence in 1945, the museum continued to attract visitors from across the globe, reinforcing the nation's identity and its allure as a tourist destination.

Experience at the National Museum

Exploring the National Museum offers an enlightening immersion into the essence of Indonesia. The museum's galleries are spread across several floors, each dedicated to different aspects of Indonesian culture, such as prehistoric, archaeological, ceramic, ethnographic, and colonial periods. Highlights include the intricate gold and jewel-encrusted artifacts of the Javanese courts, ancient statues from the Hindu-Buddhist period, and the comprehensive textile collection representing various regions.

Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in tourism trends, with a growing emphasis on experiential and educational travel. Tourists are increasingly seeking destinations that offer a deeper understanding and connection with local culture and heritage. The National Museum of Indonesia has responded to this trend by offering engaging programs, guided tours in multiple languages, and interactive exhibits.

Virtual experiences have also become a part of the museum's offerings, aligning with global digital shifts in tourism. Visitors can now take virtual tours of the museum, allowing them to explore its vast collections from anywhere in the world. This innovation not only caters to international tourists who cannot visit the museum in person but also serves as an educational platform for schools and research institutions.

Visiting the National Museum

Located in the heart of Jakarta, the museum is easily accessible and remains a must-visit for anyone traveling to Indonesia's capital city. It is open to visitors every day except Mondays, with a small entrance fee that contributes to the preservation and conservation of the collections.

The National Museum of Indonesia stands as a testament to the country's dedication to preserving and celebrating its cultural identity. It continues to adapt to the evolving demands of modern tourism while maintaining the integrity of its mission to educate and inspire. As Indonesia's premier historical museum, it is a cornerstone of cultural tourism in Jakarta and an institution that proudly represents the richness of Indonesia's heritage to the world.

Jakarta Museum Guide

This is the ultimate Jakarta Museum Guide perfect for travelers who wish to explore the interesting museums in the capital of  Indonesia.

Many locals, expats and domestic and international tourists in Jakarta often do not realize how many fascinating museums there are to see in this city. This Jakarta Museum Guide is designed to make your trip planning faster.

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

Jakarta has plenty of museums to explore over a 3 to 4 day period and many of them are located in districts which makes it possible to walk between them without even experiencing a second of Jakarta’s notorious traffic.

Another thing that many visitors to the city are uninformed about is how affordable it actually is to visit Jakarta’s museums . Jakarta has some of the most affordable museum admission fees anywhere.  This makes it possible for the whole family to visit multiple museums over a 3 to 4-day stay in Jakarta.

Many of the exhibits in Jakarta will feature Bahasa Indonesia text. This can make it challenging for visitors who do not know the local language. In this case, try to get the most out of the images and displays, or hire a local guide to show you around.

What are the best areas for visiting Jakarta’s Museums?

Although Jakarta has museums sprinkled in different areas of the city, there are few key districts that have more museums than the others.

A few of these districts include Kota Tua (Jakarta’s Old Town), Gambir (the area around the Monas ) and Menteng (the area east of the Monas ).

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

Museums in Kota Tua

If you haven’t visited Jakarta before, then you might not be familiar with Kota Tua . This is Jakarta’s Old Town. In other words, it consists of many Dutch colonial buildings which offer tourists a sample of Jakarta’s historic past.

At the center, Kota Tua is Taman Fatahillah (also called Fatahillah Square ). This is the center or heart of Kota Tua. When you arrive at Fatahillah Square you will notice that it is surrounded by colonial buildings that have been converted into museums.  Actually, there are at least three museums directly overlooking the square:

  • The Puppet Museum/Museum Wayang
  • Jakarta History Museum/Museum Sejarah Jakarta
  • Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics/ Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik)

You can easily walk between any of these within 1 or 2 minutes.

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

About 300 meters south of Fatahillah Square there are two additional museums that you can also check out while you’re in Kota Tua . They include:

Bank of Indonesia Museum

  • Bank Mandiri Museum

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

Museums in Gambir

Gambir is an area situated directly in central Jakarta. This is the region that directly surrounds the National Monument , locally known as the Monas .

If you are visiting the Monas like most tourists do while they’re in the city, then you can head directly below it   to find a museum that highlights Indonesia’s movement towards independence. They have done an excellent job of showcasing the different time periods leading up to independence.

Fortunately, the museum below the Mons is not the only museum that you can explore in this area of Jakarta.  East of the Monas you will be able to visit the National Gallery of Indonesia . This is a very impressive exhibit of Indonesian and international artwork.  You can literally walk from the Monas to the National Gallery in about 5 minutes.

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

To the west of the Monas , you will arguably find what is considered to be the best museum in Jakarta – the National Museum . You can walk to the National Museum from the northwestern corner of the Monas in less than 5 minutes.  If you’re in this area and you are still not tired of checking out museums, you can also walk to Taman Prasasti Museum from the National Museum. This museum is quite unique in that it showcases the cemetery stones of elite Dutch colonialists.

Museums in Menteng/Senen

For the sake of simplicity, it is easier to describe Menteng and Senen as one area when it comes to exploring museums in central Jakarta.  Both of these areas are located to the east of the Monas. Menteng and Senen are both known to be affluent areas of Jakarta with many large Dutch colonial buildings, large mansions, and tree-lined roads.

Although the museums in Menteng and Senen are not quite as concentrated as Gambir or Kota Tua there are still some museums located within 1 to 2 km radius of each other. Some of the museums in Menteng/Senen include:

  • Joang ‘45 Museum

Museum Sumpah Pemuda

  • National Museum of Awakening/Museum Kebangkitan Nasional

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

Most tourists typically drive between these, but walking is also possible if you are okay walking in Jakarta’s heat.

How much does it cost to visit Museums in Jakarta?

Some of the museums in Jakarta definitely do not have the newest exhibits or the best technology to support their displays.  But when you consider the entrance fees to get into the museum, Jakarta has to be considered as one of the best “museum deal cities” anywhere!!

Adults visiting museums in Jakarta typically get charged only 5,000 Indonesian Rupiah.  This converts to well under $0.50 cents in US dollars. Not a bad deal right?

museum kota jakarta virtual tour

You can expect children to either be charged 3000 IDR or free entrance.

As mentioned before, this makes it quite practical for both local and international families to explore multiple museums in Jakarta without breaking the bank. Actually, for history lovers, it is possible to create a museum focused itinerary for their trip to Jakarta. This would consist of seeing the museums in Kota Tua and then working south to Gambir and Menteng/Senen .  There are also museums sprinkled throughout other areas of central Jakarta and southern Jakarta.

Additional Tips about Visiting Museums in Jakarta

It is important to note that if you’re visiting some museums in Jakarta they will ask you to check your bag upon entrance. Do not be alarmed by this. This is business as usual in Jakarta and you will receive your bag when you exit the museum.

The museums in Jakarta typically have public washrooms that guests can use during their visit.

Jakartans are typically very open-minded about visitors taking photos in museums and in public spaces. Therefore, bring your camera along when you visit museums in Jakarta. If for some reason a particular museum does not permit for you to bring in a camera, you can simply keep it stowed with security and pick it up on the way out of the museum.
