Inside MillerCoors: The mind-blowing size of D-FW's oldest and largest brewer

When people talk about North Texas' craft beer scene, they're talking about something of a new phenomenon . In 2010, the area was home to just eight microbreweries; now there are more than 50.

Looking at craft operations alone, however, doesn't tell the whole story of beer in Dallas-Fort Worth. In fact, a local brewery made one of the most important contributions ever to the American beer industry.

Opened in 1969, MillerCoors in Fort Worth remains the region's oldest active brewery. At a projected 7.4 million barrels of beer produced in 2016, it's also by far the largest. The facility was originally built in the early 1960s for Carling brewery, but it faced production issues and was ultimately bought out by Miller Brewing Co.

The next decade, in a battle to be America's No. 1 brewer, the company launched Miller Lite. It was first brewed in Fort Worth in 1975, jump-starting the low-calorie or "light" beer revolution.

The plant remained a Miller manufacturer until 2008, when its parent company, SABMiller, and Molson Coors Brewing Co. joined forces to create MillerCoors. This expanded the facility's production portfolio to include 18 brands, including Miller High Life, Coors Light, Milwaukee's Best, Steel Reserve and a variety of imports. It also contract-brews beverages for Pabst Brewing Co.

If you've had a Foster's beer in the United States in the past eight years, it was brewed in Fort Worth, according to Michael Wilken, communications specialist for the brewery.

MillerCoors' Fort Worth brewery is without a doubt astonishing, with 155 acres of land, 51 of which are "under roof." Trains pull up on the tracks that flank the east side of the complex to deliver hundreds of millions of pounds of malt, hops and corn to brewers, who run the two brewhouses 24 hours a day, every day of the year. There's also a bar on-site where MillerCoors' 540 employees can each drink a free beer at the end of their shifts once a week.

Which beers they brew at any given time is dictated by what Gil Alberding, MillerCoors brewing process leader, calls a "yeast cadence." The quality control department helps determine the order in which different brands are produced to keep their respective yeast strains healthy. MillerCoors has two brewhouses -- one that's 1,000 barrels and another that's 600 barrels -- and once it's time for fermentation, beers are kept in vessels ranging from 1,400 to 5,000 barrels.

But the size of one's boat doesn't necessarily indicate its ability to float. Earlier this year, MillerCoors shut down one of its facilities in North Carolina after a 10 million-barrel decrease in production. On Oct. 11, Molson Coors acquired full ownership of MillerCoors after SABMiller and Anheuser-Busch InBev closed the biggest beer deal in industry history, a $108 billion merger known as the "mega-brew." Though how that will affect the Fort Worth plant remains to be seen, it will likely continue to produce the brands in its current portfolio, says Wilken.

Craig Poupore, vice president and plant manager of the Fort Worth brewery, points to ways MillerCoors plans to compete in an industry that's seeing more palates turn to wine and spirits. One strategy is acquiring craft brands with loyal followings through its Tenth and Blake subsidiary, including Granbury's own Revolver Brewing in August.

The beer giant is also doubling down on flavored beverages, which have recently skyrocketed in popularity. Next year, the Fort Worth brewery is investing $25 million in what Poupore calls "the most dynamic and capable flavor system in our brewing network."

"The company is investing a lot of money in capabilities to meet the demands of the consumer," says Poupore. "It sets us up for the future, with capability to be more flexible and to make different types of products that consumers are asking for."

MillerCoors’ Fort Worth brewery to celebrate milestone 50th anniversary

Richard M. Nixon became the 37th president of the United States. Man landed on the moon. Woodstock just celebrated three days of peace and music. San Francisco Giants star Willie Mays hit his 600th homerun.

And the brewery that made the first batches of Miller Lite began brewing beer. 1969 was one for the books.

The MillerCoors Forth Worth brewery, which spans 155 acres with 51 of those under roof, opened its doors in fall 1969. And it has since become the largest – and longest-operating – brewery in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area and one of the largest in the United States.

The brewery is gearing up to mark its 50th anniversary, naturally, with a Texas-sized celebration. Up to 1,200 employees, retirees, executives and community leaders will gather Oct. 19 at the nearby Texas Live! complex in Arlington, Texas, for a bash featuring MillerCoors brands and two mechanical bulls.

“This is a great opportunity to celebrate the people who make this all happen—our employees and our community. We respect our 50-year legacy here as we brew, package and ship our high-quality beers,” says Jim Crawford, MillerCoors vice president and plant manager of the Fort Worth brewery. “And we want to celebrate the salespeople and distributors who get it in front of our loyal consumers.”

From Carling Black Label to Miller Lite

Built by Carling Brewing, the maker of the economy brand Carling Black Label, the brewery first opened in 1964 with a production capacity of 300,000 barrels per year. But after just two years, the scuffling Carling sold the complex to Miller Brewing for $5.5 million.

After extensive renovations that included more than tripling its capacity, Miller resumed production in September 1969 with a capacity of 1 million barrels. And business boomed.

Miller in 1975 upended the beer industry with the nationwide launch of the Original Light Beer, Miller Lite. Fort Worth was the first brewery to brew the light lager, which kicked off the light-beer revolution.

Miller was looking to solve two issues with Miller Lite: “Namely, beer tends to give you a ‘filled up’ feeling when you’re drinking it and, secondly its calorie/carbohydrate content contributes to weight control problems,” claimed the February 1975 issue of the High-Lites internal newsletter.

Clearly, Miller Lite resonated with Americans. And by 1979, the Fort Worth brewery was out of space. That year, Miller added 100,000 square feet of warehouse space, 30,000 square feet of office space and more parking for its roughly 1,300 employees.

From light beers to FMBs

Today, Miller Lite is the No. 3-selling beer in the U.S., and it continues to pick up share in its segment, per Nielsen data. It’s also an important beer for Fort Worth, which continues to brew more than 2 million barrels of Miller Lite each year.

But that’s not all. In total, Fort Worth produces 7.4 million barrels a year on its nine can, bottle, and keg lines.

The state-of-the-art brewery is capable of filling 1,200 bottles per minute and 1,700 cans per minute, while running the network’s most complex mix of brands.

The brewery juggles high-volume brands such as Miller Lite and Coors Light with smaller brands like Foster’s, Hamm’s and Milwaukee’s Best. It also is equipped to brew and package brands such as Henry’s Hard Sparkling Water, Redd’s and other flavored malt beverages. A new slim-can line is in the works.

Today’s standard

Today, the highly automated Fort Worth Brewery boasts a loyal workforce of nearly 550 people, 15% of whom are veterans and almost 20% who have logged more than 20 years of service.

They’ve helped lead a series of initiatives to ensure the brewery takes care of its Texas home.

Through water stewardship projects, MillerCoors has helped save 560 million gallons of water in the state. Over the last five years, Fort Worth has achieved an 18% reduction in water usage and a 21% reduction in energy usage. The brewery has been landfill free since 2016, and it participates in community cleanup projects each year.

Celebrations also have been a hallmark of the Fort Worth brewery, which has hosted dozens of parties, celebration meals and community events over the years.

For its grand opening on Sept. 26, 1969, the brewery hosted 600 guests at a Texas-style barbecue .

In 1979, when Miller celebrated its 125th anniversary, the brewery honored its 10 years in business with state and local community members at the Fort Worth Club.

Ten years later, 850 employees braved an ice storm to celebrate the brewery’s 20th anniversary at Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk bar. Then-Miller President Leonard Goldstein arrived on a longhorn named Bufford T. Lite, the sidekick of rodeo champion and Miller Lite All-Star Jim Shoulders .

For its 50th anniversary next month, Molson Coors CEO Gavin Hattersley isn’t likely to arrive on a longhorn. But he plans to be there to toast the brewery and its employees on 50 years of making quality beer.

“MillerCoors has a long, storied history and the Fort Worth brewery is a tremendous part of that,” Hattersley says. “It’s an honor to celebrate this milestone with the folks who brew our great products and the community that’s supported us over the past five decades."

Opened in 2020 in the Foundry District, this new brewery comes from husband and wife Stuart and Alyssa Maples. The 14,000-square-foot space includes the brewery, taproom, and outdoor beer garden. It’s a charming spot to sip some beers.

Head up to the bar to order brews like the 1776 American lager, Czech Ya Later pilsner, or Monkey Business Hefeweizen, as well as wood-fired pepperoni, meat lovers, and pickle pizzas. Then, chill in the A/C at wooden communal tables or outside.

Founded by John Pritchett in 2016, this massive Fort Worth brewery will be seeing some changes in 2022 —Dallas’ Bishop Cider recently acquired the brewery that sits on 21 acres of property in the city’s near east side area.

The brand will be getting a refresh, but you can still currently visit the taproom to sip on their popular brews like Billy Jenkins bock, TX Blonde, and Wild Acre IPA.

Sour Pickle Beer was such a huge success, it has been distributed state-wide.

Cody Martin co-founded this favorite Fort Worth brewery in 2012. Since then the brewery has become established in the community as one of the best spots for a beer. Named after the purple martin bird, Martin House Brewing makes some interesting concoctions. Brews range from True Love Raspberry Sour Ale to The Imperial Texan (a Double India Red Ale).

In 2020, the brewery launched its Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer and continues to push the flavor envelope with an upcoming hot dog water flavored seltzer . The taproom also hosts a food truck every Thursday and Friday evenings, and all day on weekends.

Located in Fort Worth’s Near Southside, this brewery was founded by Macy Moore and Matt Hill in 2016. Known for their innovative brews, the spot features six core beers including Feisty Blonde, Tejano Lager, Fur Slipper milk stout, and more creative concoctions.

You’ll also find rotating and limited edition beers, karaoke, live music, trivia, and more at the taproom each week. Happy hour takes place Monday through Thursday from 4 pm to 7 pm and includes full pours of beer for only $4.

Rahr & Sons Brewing

Since 2004, this Near Southside brewery has been serving up beloved brews out of its warehouse taproom. Owned by Fritz Rahr and Erin Rahr, the popular spot is known for its core Dadgum IPA, Rahr’s Original, Texas Red, and Blonde beers, as well as seasonal rotators.

The brewery hosts tours and tastings from Wednesday to Sunday if you’re interested in learning more about their brews.

Panther Island Brewing

North of downtown Fort Worth, this brewery was opened by Ryan McWhorter in 2014. Core beers include the Tailgater blonde ale, Road Trip Snacks brown ale, Cannonball scotch ale, and more. They also serve local ciders on tap such as Dallas’ Trinity Cider and Fairweather Cider Co. from Austin.

The taproom hosts food trucks to pair bites with your beers like Smokin’ Cactus’ Southwestern cuisine and Kelly’s Onion Burger.

Cowtown Brewing

Situated at the north edge of downtown, this Fort Worth brewery debuted in 2018. Cowtown Brewing has since expanded to a second location — and Southlake’s first-ever taproom — at Southlake Town Square.

The spot is known for its craft beer and barbecue — a winning combination. The taproom features an indoor space and an outdoor deck to enjoy drinks and bites on. Favorite brews include German-style lagers like the G’night Vienna, High Brau, and several IPAs. The barbecue menu includes sandwiches, brisket tacos, and rib plates.

Funky Picnic Brewery & Café

Like many breweries, this South Main Village brewery began in a garage with friends. After several years of experimenting and competing in homebrew competitions, Funky Picnic debuted as a microbrewery in 2019. Co-founded by Samantha Glenn, Collin Zreet, Jenni Hanley, and John Koch, the brewery also serves an entire menu of food to pair with your beers.

Craft beers on tap include the La Raza Mexican lager, It’s Called Lovebus hefeweizen, and Funny Accent English ale. They also make cocktails and mocktails, and the food menu features chicken wings, loaded fries, salads, burgers, and so much more.

Second Rodeo Brewing

Pull up a lawn chair and stay a while at Second Rodeo Brewing.

Just opened in 2021 , this new brewery and beer garden in the revitalized Mule Alley comes from Jason Boso (Truck Yard in Dallas). The new spot features 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space for live music and brews.

Created by Brew Boss Dennis Wehrmann, the beer menu includes eight Second Rodeo brews including an oatmeal stout, Mex Tex lager, Big Buckle IPA, and more. They also serve other local breweries beers, cocktails, and wine. The food menu features wings, Truck Yard nachos, and Truck Yard’s Famous Philly Cheesesteak.

Bankhead Brewing

Founded in Rowlett, this new brewery opened in the former Deep Ellum Brewing Co. space in West 7th in 2021. Named after the historic Bankhead highway — one of the first transcontinental highways built in 1916 — the brewery includes a lineup of 16 craft beers on tap, a full bar, and food.

Names of beers are Bankhead related including the Aoogah! pilsner, Milemaker 10 IPA, and Hoofer’s Hef. A chef-driven menu features short rib poutine, lobster mac and cheese, pizzas, chicken fried ribeye, and more elevated bites.

Fort Brewery and Pizza

Owners Will Churchill and Corrie Watson opened Fort in The Foundry District in 2018, overhauling a warehouse space into a cool new brewery that also happens to serve great pizza. The brewery features an outdoor patio with an AstroTurf cornhole court, music stage, murals, and a retractable roof.

As for the beers, you’ll find favorites such as Sir Canz A Lot pale ale, Baby Got Bock, and Fort Stout on tap. The food menu includes 15 kinds of pizzas, salads, and burgers.

Neutral Ground Brewing Company

New to the Fort Worth brewery scene, Neutral Ground opened in the River East district in 2021. Founded by Stan Hudson and Sean Doublet, the name was inspired by the original “neutral ground”— the disputed border between Louisiana and Texas in 1803. The neutral ground was a place for free trade and fun.

Beers on tap range from brown ales to IPAs and food vendors pop up regularly.

History of brewing in Fort Worth

Let’s talk about beer . Fort Worth has had a rodeo of a time corralling the beer industry + while we might not have a Lone Star-sized brewing history like San Antonio , we’re familiar with fermentation. From pre-Prohibition lagers to a lite beer giant to contemporary craft brewpubs , we’re pouring out a pint of Panther City history.

Way back when

Fort Worth’s first brewery supposedly opened during the Civil War and was owned by Nathaniel Terry, but it didn’t last very long — if it even went into business . Breweries had a rocky start in Cowtown because creating cold lager required ice and the first ice house didn’t open in Fort Worth until 1878 . Until then ice had to be shipped by rail line from St. Louis to Dallas where it was brought to Cowtown on a stagecoach .

By 1900, there was only one brewery in town: the Texas Brewing Company , which opened in 1891 at 1001 Jones St. — where the Fort Worth Central Station is now . It closed in 1918 with the onset of Prohibition . Beer production slowly picked up again around 1950.

Meet Miller

In 1964, Canadian brand Carling Brewing opened a facility in Fort Worth off I-35W + just two years later sold it for $5.5 million . Enter Miller Brewing Company — the Milwaukee-based brewery started operations in September 1969 and is the region’s oldest active brewery. The brewery started producing Miller Lite in 1975 , jump starting the low-calorie beer revolution with those ubiquitous retro white cans .

In 2008, Molson Coors teamed up with SABMiller (then owner of Miller Brewing Co.) to create MillerCoors , which would be fully purchased and revert to the Molson Coors name in 2016 .

With 155 acres of property — 51 of which are covered , the Miller brewery is the largest in Texas . Here are just a few note-worthy stats:

• The facility uses 600-1000 lbs of hops , 250,000 lbs of corn + 500,000 lbs of malt every day .
• There are two brewhouses going at all times, a combined size of 1,600 barrels of beer — that’s almost 50,000 gallons .
• The brewery uses 750 million gallons of water per year — but it also treats 1.3 million gallons of water per day and returns it to the city.
• The facility can fill 1,200 bottles and 1,700 cans every minute plus kegs. That comes to between 120 million and 1440 million ounces of beer per day .

And that’s not all — In 2021, the Miller facility started producing “America’s Oldest Beer” Yuengling & Son + last month broke ground on a $65 million packaging warehouse for hard seltzer.

The craft beer comeback

Despite its size, Miller doesn’t have a monopoly on beer in Fort Worth. In 1993, Texas legalized brewpubs — restaurants that sell beverages that were brewed on the property — and the beer scene went crazy. There are now over a dozen craft breweries in Cowtown + you can visit them all with a self-guided tour of the Fort Worth Ale Trail .

Molson Coors invests $65 million in Fort Worth Brewery to grow its capabilities and increase its in-house hard seltzer production

FORT WORTH, Texas – June 2, 2022 – As part of Molson Coors’ long-term plan to invest in its capabilities to bring more hard seltzer production in-house, the company broke ground today on a new $65 million variety packing warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas. The investment is expected to allow the Fort Worth Brewery to remove third-party vendors for final pack assembly, which the company believes will help alleviate shipping costs and improve time to market.

“This expansion truly represents the next step toward strengthening our in-house hard seltzer capabilities, as its one of many recent investments we made at Fort Worth aimed at growing our above premium portfolio and transforming the company’s offerings to meet consumers’ changing preferences,” said Jim Crawford, vice president and plant manager, Molson Coors.    The roughly 200,000 square foot warehouse is expected to enhance the brewery’s ability to internalize storage, packaging, shipping, and logistics of variety packed can beverages, while bringing additional jobs to the Fort Worth market. It will include a state-of-the-art variety pack system capable of packaging up to six different flavors in 12- or 24-pack configurations and repacking up to 1.5 million barrels annually. 

The new warehouse may also be used for future brands the company develops as part of its ambition to expand its portfolio beyond the beer aisle. 

The projects represent the latest investment by Molson Coors to grow its capabilities. In 2020, the company invested in capital projects to expand its U.S. hard seltzer production capacity by about 400%. In 2021, it quadrupled Canadian hard seltzer production and invested another $35 million in the U.K. to make a range of upgrades, including adding its first hard seltzer canning line. Construction is slated to be completed later this year.

Cory made our tour legendary. Couldn't wait to get home and drink some ice cold Miller High Life. Will definitely recommend this tour to our friends and family visiting. CORY IS THE MAN One and only complaint was that they did not allow water. I paid full price and did not even drink (4months pregnant) but couldn't have my water.

If you have never been here, go! It is the epitome of hard working Americans. There is rich history that most people never see. The Miller tour demonstrates the pride that makes America the best country in the world.

Very well done! Go on this tour, trust me, just go. There are surprises you won't expect, and a few you will expect (like beer samples included with your ticket). Entertaining, informative and interesting. Highly recommended!

Great tour that takes you through the high speed production line. It was awesome to see the behind the scenes manufacturing tour with one guy at the PLC. One guy to get Miller brand beer to you, high speed machines do the rest. Begining of the tour features a Miller lite sample. The star on the building is the European sign for quality brewing, come get your drink on. Next you go through a retro building with the wort in a copper vat. Then the mani facilities and storage. We saw one guy and his plc, then two guys and their fork lift. Next, beer garden where you will receive a taste of the high life. Then you pick two more samples. If you choose a seltzer you get a full can. Other selections are in a small cup. The fruited sour is better than the blue moon, better taste and more effervescent. Be prepared to walk and take tiny stairs.

Waited an hour and a half for the 2:30 tour. I have a bad knee injury. There is a part of the tour that requires steps. A lot of steps. I went up because I was excited to attend this tour of which I waited 90 mins for. Coming down the stairs took me a few mins longer due to my injury. When I made it out the rest of the tour was crossing the street and entering a building. I got left. No one checked for me. No one at the tour center seemed to care. Didn't offer a refund just "oh they left you". Also things I noticed. The girl (overweight white woman with shaved head) at the counter was dry and rude. Kept giving me interesting looks while booking the tour. I was told no samples before you tour but when other (white) people started showing up they were offered plenty of drink samples up until the time they departed. I'm not sure what you should take from Any of this. I was the only POC... hate to play the racist card but this whole encounter definitely gave that! Shame I was really excited for this tour! I work in this industry. My husband owns bars and nightclubs in NYC and I work consulting all over the country in this industry.I have toured Napa, Sonoma, Willamette, the finger lakes, Eastern Washington, the bourbon trail, Lynchburg, Bordeaux, etc... and I was so excited to indulge into Millers history. What a poor representation. Please do better

The tour through the brewery was fabulous! Our tour guides Jack and Eleni was very customer focused. Jack knew every fact you could possibly imagine and kept the group laughing and interested. Would highly recommend to anyone who appreciates history and BEER!!

Fantastic tour. You can't go wrong with the price... It's free. But everybody's time is valuable and this tour is worth everyone's time. You truly learned the history of brewing in Milwaukee. This is a must do tour when in town or when you are hosting visitors to our city. Great job Miller.

The Miller Tour was the main reason we drove from Chicago to Milwaukee. Living a few miles from the Irwindale plant, we always wanted to tour the brewery but they do not do tours. Large private parking lot. Tours run all day, wait time is usually not to long. Tour costs $10. Takes almost the entire 75 minutes. No strollers allowed! You must use a body carrier if you have babies or toddlers. You get 4 pours throughout the tour. Very informative. Lots of walking. A few stairwells. Very hot if the sun is out and you are carrying a 30 pound baby on your chest. Our tour guide kept us entertained the whole tour. The whole plant is huge. So many buildings. I loved the og buildings where it all started. The beer cave was the coolest part of the tour. The ending you stop back where you start but get 2 beers in their tasting tent. Gift shop has a bunch of swag you can buy. Fun tour, worth the drive!

We are located inside the Miller Visitor Center at 4251 W. State St. in Milwaukee. From t-shirts to glassware, key chains to neon signs, we have the memorabilia to celebrate your favorite beer on your visit to Miller Valley. Check out our  retail storefront on Amazon.com .

Phone Orders : We accept phone orders from guests 21 years of age and older and will ship anywhere within the continental U.S. for a minimal shipping fee. Please call us at 414-931-4280 or 800-944-LITE (option 5, 2, 2) with your order requests and we will be happy to assist you. Sorry, we do not ship beer nor can we ship merchandise to PO boxes or rural routes.
